A message from YAL President Cliff Maloney... When I took the helm as President of Young Americans for Liberty in May of 2016, I understood the incredible opportunity at our fingertips. By reaching college students with the positive message of liberty, we have the opportunity to help these students for m their opinions before they become entrenched in a big-gover nment ideology and empower them to for m their identity as engaged citizens early on. By doing so, we know that they will be agents for change for the rest of their lives. I could never have guessed just how much progress we would make in the time that has transpired since then. By all measures, 2017 was our most impactful year to date. We reached more hearts and minds this year than I’d have ever thought possible, and I’m excited to share the stories of impact directly with you in this report. To name just a few highlights, this year we topped 903 active chapters, we overtur ned 28 unconstitutional speech policies, and we trained 2,554 pro-liberty activists with the tools they need to be forces for good in the political process and beyond. Each of these numbers represents an inspired soul that is making waves for change in their community. 2017 presented several challenges as well that brought with them opportunities in disguise. Believe me, it is a good problem to have when we must book venues that ca n fit hundreds more activists than we anticipated would be registering to receive our training. And when college bureaucrats try to shut our activism events down and claim that Free Speech Zones “trump the constitution,” our capable leaders are there with a video recorder in hand ready to work with our Director of Free Speech to fight back so that the ideas of freedom can be heard by every college student. The stories of the brave activists in this report show me that the future of liberty is brighter than ever. As you’ll see in the following pages, Young Americans for Liberty is creating a generational shift towards liberty for today’s youth. Especially as millennials continue to become an ever growing voting block, young people will play a critical role in shaping the direction of our country over the next several years. As the largest and fastest-growing libertarian and conservative student organization in America, your continued support for YAL couldn’t be more important. Thank you for all that you do! For liberty,

Cliff Maloney Jr. PRESIDENT YOUNG AMERICANS FOR LIBERTY

YAL Chapters

903

NATIONWIDE IN 2017

UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA RENO

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON

This is one of the most active chapters on the west coast, and they have grown immensely. They use unique props and signs to recruit, and they hosted six events last semester alone. This chapter brought ten people all the way from Reno to the Los Angeles Spring Summit.

The chapter at the University of Houston was determined to send over 15 members to attend the Denver Spring Summit. For funding, the chapter organized a fundraiser dubbed "Liberty Jam." The chapter secured local bands to volunteer their time and talent and raised nearly $1,000. In the time since, the fifteen members who got scholarships have taken on larger roles in the chapter and the local liberty movement.

THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA LAFAYETTE

UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - MADISON

In the last year alone this chapter earned national media attention for their free speech reform efforts, won Student Organization of the Year on their campus, and executed several flawless events. This chapter has been unstoppable in the pursuit to spread liberty on campus.

Simply put, this chapter just gets it. They brought a dozen students to the Chicago Summit, have over 20 active members, and put on 7 activism events this past spring. Their membership is comprised of current and former YAL State Chairs, Students For Liberty Campus Coordinators, FEE Ambassadors, and Spring Summit Recruitment Directors.

CAPITAL UNIVERSITY

CAYUGA COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

This past year, Capital University advocated for privacy, criminal justice reform, a simplified tax code, and free speech in a BIG way. They passed legislation allowing pepper spray and free speech reform through their Student Government. They even participated in Relay for Life and a Valentine's Day event bringing together College Republicans and College Democrats.

This chapter was relentless in their efforts this past year. They brought over 20 members to the Boston Spring Summit and went head to head with their school attempting to shut down their chapter on campus. They have gone from being non-existent to one of the largest and most active chapters in the Northeast.

LONGWOOD UNIVERSITY

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY

Formed less than a year ago, this chapter has quickly grown into one of the strongest and most active in the state of Virginia. In the last semester alone, this chapter hosted over 5 activism events, regular recruitment drives, and even held study sessions during final exams.

This April, the chapter at Syracuse University recruited over 100 students to their "The Land of the Not So Free" event. The speakers for this event consisted of Julie Borowski, former Ron Paul Chief of Staff, President of the Mises Institute Jeff Deist, and the CEO of Students For Liberty Wolf Von Laer.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY

MANSFIELD UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA

2,000 people and two former governors were brought together by this YAL chapter. At this event, Gary Johnson and former Indiana governor Mitch Daniels discussed why people are better off when the government doesn't get involved. The chapter originally planned to hold the event in an auditorium that sat 1,000 people. Then they sold out. So they moved the event to an arena that seats 2,000 people and sold out again. Over 10,000 people tuned in on Facebook Live.

Mansfield University grew from one man with a dream to an activism workhorse in just one semester. Their team had a three-day-long Ax the Tax event with nearly eight-hour shifts. Mansfield even managed to get the Chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education to #AxTheTax!

STUDENTS ARRESTED DURING CONSTITUTION GIVEAWAY; LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST MICH. COLLEGE

“The lawsuit seeks to have the school’s “speech permit” and “speech zone” policies ruled a violation of First and Fourteenth Amendment rights.”

DEPAUL UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS SCUTTLE ‘FREE SPEECH BALL,’ CITING POSSIBILITY OF HATE SPEECH "Administrators have accused us of ‘providing a platform for hate’ without providing anything to back up their claims,” DePaul YAL chapter president Thomas Barry said. “What we’ve been trying to establish is a platform for free speech. Somehow it seems that those two ideas are seen as one and the same here at DePaul.” An administrator at DePaul University wrote the school’s YAL chapter just four days prior to the date of the event, saying permission was denied for fear it could foster “an environment which invites hate."

YOUNG AMERICANS FOR LIBERTY ON MISSION TO RESTORE FREE SPEECH IN U.S. COLLEGE CAMPUSES

“Young Americans for Liberty is on a mission to protect the values of the First Amendment and restore free speech to college campuses across the United States.”

"With over $20 trillion in national debt, it is unsustainable to continue policing and nation-building abroad. We should instead focus on our own needs here at home. The United States is the strongest military power in the world. But that military power should only be used in order to defend our homeland, maintain our national security, and protect our cherished freedoms".

DEPAUL BANS FREE SPEECH BALL

"Depaul university silences a free speech ball event over fears its students might incite hate speech. The school's Young Americans for Liberty chapter wanted to roll around a 9ft ball around their campus in Chicago letting people write whatever they wanted on it. The group's founder said the administrators shut the event down and threatened to hold students accountable but did not specify exactly how."

Chapter Leaders & Their Stories ANDREW DI GIOVANNA, ACTIVIST OF THE YEAR, CALIFORNIA STATE CHAIR

"When I first heard of YAL and its origins, I was immediately inspired. Within two months of fierce dedication to the success of my own chapter at Citrus College, I was given an opportunity to prove myself on a larger scale as a California State Chair. Since that time, I have met countless individuals, from liberty-celebrity representatives (including Dr. Ron Paul and Judge Napolitano) to liberty-loving students socked away in forgotten classrooms. These experiences have absolutely and forever changed my life, and for that, to YAL, I am grateful."

TAYLOR ANDERSON, WASHINGTON STATE CHAIR

"YAL has given me a place to advance the ideals that I hold dear, but it has done so, so much more. Through YAL, I’ve found a home and a family. I have learned so much about myself, the world around me, and what I truly believe. I can honestly say that YAL was my favorite thing about my college experience. I am so happy to get people more involved every day because I know how much my life has been changed through YAL, and so I can only imagine what will be made possible for them."

CALEB MALONE, LOUISIANA RECRUITMENT DIRECTOR

"The free speech activism events provided by Young Americans for Liberty have, by far, changed my life. Before the free speech events, I was incredibly unaware of the ways that my university was violating my freedoms. These events are giving me the amazing opportunity of sharing this information and creating a coalition of students who want to take back their 1st Amendment rights. I now have a burning passion in me to reform school policy. Every student should have the right to express themselves without the constraint of bureaucratic college administrators."

SHANNON DAILEY, CHAPTER PRESIDENT, CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY - CHICO

"I've identified as libertarian for a couple years now, but YAL’s National Convention was what really changed my path and got me excited about the liberty movement. Coming from someone who lives in a blue state, meeting others who shared my values was a very eye opening experience that made me realize I wasn't alone. The convention made me more confident in my values and in my ability to spread them, and it made me more sure of myself and the direction I want to take in life. The people I met and the valuable skills I honed at YALCON are things I'll never take for granted because they are shaping me into a better person, leader and warrior for liberty."

ZACH TAYLOR, COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY “YAL’s National Convention showed me just how the liberty movement is alive and growing across the country. By being there, I got to be a part of the strongest most principled dialogue in politics that will one day be the standard in Washington. The speakers, discussions, and training gave me the tools to fuel the fire of liberty on my campus!”

18

Chapter Leaders & Their Stories NICOLE COMMISO, SIENA COLLEGE "Being a part of YAL has been the most incredible experience of my life. I had received major backlash from my peers for an article I wrote trying to challenge the status quo. Right after that, I attended the Boston Spring Summit which was incredibly transformative. Once I got there, I went from feeling alone with my beliefs of liberty to feeling like a part of something huge and full of energy."

MARCUS MALDONADO, LOUISIANA RECRUITMENT DIRECTOR "Over the past year and a half, Young Americans for Liberty has not only made me a better activist, it has also made me a better professional and person. I have been introduced to people who will be friends for a lifetime, while also working to advance the ideas of freedom that are the foundation of this great nation. Young Americans for Liberty has given me an outlet to transform the world in a way that I never thought would be possible. The friendships I've gained, the personal development, and the countless opportunities all culminated into a life-changing experience that I know I will look back on as critical to my future successes. Through YAL and its network, I was able to meet some of my best friends and work with them for the ideas we all hold dear.”

LIZ SPAYD, PENNSYLVANIA STATE CHAIR "After YAL’s National Convention, I felt so motivated to really skyrocket my activism. There were so many empowering speakers from Judge Napolitano to Justin Amash. There is no way to walk out of any of their talks not being empowered to spread liberty. One of my favorite parts of YALCON was getting to speak to people I never thought I'd have a chance to. I remember having a conversation with one of the main speakers which I thought was amazing. We also had a lot of amazing opportunities to learn how to advance liberty. Ty Hicks’s talk made me feel so much more confident about recruitment. Everyone being at these events make it possible to #MakeLibertyWin. Everyone who has the chance and honor to be able to attend these events should be very grateful. I can't wait until next year!"

ALEC BARKETT, NEW YORK STATE CHAIR "YAL’s National Convention was a life changing experience for me. This event allowed me to expand my knowledge of liberty, network with students across the country, meet some of the most influential people in my life, and learn how to make a real difference in my community by educating and inspiring my fellow students."

The latest evolution in YAL’s cutting-edge training is our Mobilization Bootcamps.

After amassing a vast network of student activists since YAL’s founding, there arose a need to enable current and future YAL alumni to take their advocacy to the next level. In 2017, YAL successfully trained 186 activists at these mobilization bootcamps.

SUCCESS STORIES "As a young girl who spent the first couple years of her life living in the coalition for the homeless in Orlando, I would've never expected I'd be in Washington, DC training to actively build communities around principles I hold dear. Through YAL’s wonderful community, I was able to get hands on experience in the field during political campaigns. These experiences single handedly paved my way into my Field Director position now where I'm actively promoting the ideas of liberty and free markets. I can't thank YAL enough!"

Abbey Wigton FL FIELD DIRECTOR, AMERICANS FOR PROSPERITY | UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA YAL ROLE: CHAPTER MEMBER

"The mobilization component of Young Americans for Liberty's mission helped me land my role at FreedomWorks. The skills I gained recruiting new members on college campuses across the Northeast and contributing to the regional summits as an intern with YAL allowed me to continue my growth as a professional advocate for liberty.”

Christine Burger DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE, FREEDOMWORKS | UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY, SUNY YAL ROLE: NEW YORK STATE CHAIR, YAL HQ INTERN

“Becoming a member of such an encouraging group with so much momentum in our movement has pushed and inspired me to accomplish goals I hadn't expected at the age of 22. I’ve worked on three major campaigns across the nation supporting candidates and causes that defend the constitution. Now with the help of connections through YAL, I've landed a Statewide Volunteer Coordinating job for a US Senate campaign. If it wasn't for the family I developed through YAL, I have no idea where I'd be today.”

Kyna Finley FIELD DIRECTOR, MISSOURI LIBERTY ALLIANCE | MURRAY STATE UNIVERSITY YAL ROLE: CHAPTER PRESIDENT

"During my search for a summer internship, YAL proved to be an invaluable resource. They provided me with a list of liberty oriented organizations across the country, gave me tips on how to improve my resume, and provided me with the necessary skills for succeeding in an interview. I am sure that without YAL, my search for an internship would have been much more difficult. This semester I’m continuing the fight on campuses while also serving as a Fiscal Fellow at Mass Fiscal Alliance.”

Cedric Colbert RESEARCH ASSISTANT, BEACON HILL INSTITUTE | AUBURN UNIVERSITY YAL ROLE: CHAPTER MEMBER

“I attended a YAL event and my entire worldview changed. YAL showed me another way. A path forward that relied on personal responsibility and the drive of individuals to create solutions, rather than bloated government bureaucracies. It was so refreshing and the dots began to connect. After that event, I started the YAL chapter on my campus. Now after graduation I’m working full time to continue to advance the ideas we believe in.”

SUCCESS STORIES

“Without YAL, I wouldn't be where I am today as a professional political activist. Their regional directors trained me in how to be effective in spreading the message of liberty. The skills they taught me allowed me to go on to become an outreach coordinator for the Rand Paul for Senate campaign, and I later became a field director for the Republican Party of Kentucky. After helping Rand stay in the Senate, I moved on to the Leadership Institute where I serve as Midwest Regional Field Coordinator helping more students join the fight.”

Bill Dowhy

MIDWEST REGIONAL FIELD COORDINATOR, LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE | CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY YAL ROLE: CHAPTER PRESIDENT

“Since I moved to Washington, DC, YAL has empowered me to become more involved in the fight for liberty. I found my first campaign through connections with YAL alumni, and YAL helped me get a job with the Network of Enlightened Women for the semester. I am so thankful for the opportunities I have received and can’t wait to make this school year rock!”

Grace Watson

DEVELOPMENT INTERN, NETWORK OF ENLIGHTENED WOMEN | THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY YAL ROLE: CHAPTER PRESIDENT

“If there's anything I've learned while working with YAL, it's that grassroots work is where the real battle is taking place. I wouldn't have the job that I have now without the skills I've been able to develop within this organization. Specifically, YAL has taught me the importance of personalizing the message of liberty--reaching others is much easier when they feel drawn to your message. Being a part of this organization has been the most valuable part of my college experience in terms of securing employment after school. I can't thank YAL enough!”

Matthew Stross

MO FIELD DIRECTOR, AMERICANS FOR PROSPERITY | PITTSBURG STATE UNIVERSITY YAL ROLE: KANSAS RECRUITMENT DIRECTOR

“I got my start in politics with my local YAL chapter on campus. With YAL, I found new ways to get involved in my community and advance the ideas I was passionate about. I also found an incredible support system of friends that were just as motivated to spread the message of freedom as I was. In fact, many of us still work together in politics today! And YAL’s training and incredible network of resources helped me build the skills I would need to make a career out of advancing liberty. It’s well known in my state, MSU’s YAL chapter has produced some of the most prominent and effective young leaders in our state politics today.”

Kendall Cotton

POLITICAL DIRECTOR, MATT ROSENDALE FOR US SENATE | MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY YAL ROLE: MT STATE CHAIR

“As I sit here, in our nation's capital, I can't help but wonder how I got so far. One thing I don't have to speculate about is the profound effect that YAL has had on my journey. A little over a year ago I had graduated college with really no direction on where to go next in life, then I was lucky enough to find a liberty campaign through YAL alumni. One thing lead to another and now I work for one of the biggest champions of liberty of our generation, and it is all thanks to the skills, work ethic, and character that YAL instills in every one of it's members.”

SUCCESS STORIES “YAL is building the next generation of leaders. Our goal is to cast the leaders of tomorrow to reclaim the direction of our government. And I’m proud to say we are making big headwinds. This cycle, two more former YAL leaders were elected to office in their home state: Mayor Shea Dobson and Rep. Phil Christofanelli. Their stories are indicative of exactly the kind of leadership YAL is instilling in the next generation. I can’t wait to report back to you as our students and alumni continue to change the world.”

Cliff Maloney Jr. PRESIDENT

I was inspired by the ideas of liberty when I was introduced to Ron Paul's Presidential Campaign. As cheesy as it sounds, it was the moment that changed my life and lit a fire in my belly to promote liberty as an authentic political leader. When I ventured off to college in 2013 I knew that I would start a YAL chapter at my school. After growing my chapter, I was promoted to be the Mississippi YAL State Chair. Talk about an opportunity! I quickly learned management skills and how to mobilize individuals across the state, both on campus and in their communities. During my time at YAL I received the best training that any activist could ask for. The 2013 YAL National Convention in Washington, DC was a game changer. I strategized and worked with the top 300 students in YAL's network for four days. YAL understands what it means to be successful. They focus on teaching activists like me to hold ourselves accountable, measure our success, and find innovative ways to spread our message. If I had to sum up the skills YAL taught me, here are the core basics: • Tactics on how to message our principles • Understanding the nuts and bolts of leadership • How to build email lists, run digital campaigns, and recruit volunteers • Most importantly, they created a network around me that I could tap into for success and support YAL provides students with a unique opportunity to grow as an individual and as a leader, helping build a set of invaluable skills for years to come. YAL activists and supporters, working together, can create monumental change in our communities. I'm living proof that what YAL is doing is working.

Shea Dobson MAYOR, OCEAN SPRINGS, MS | FORMER YAL MISSISSIPPI STATE CHAIR

Back in 2009, I was a young college student who started a YAL chapter at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Today, I'm the representative for the 105th district of the Missouri State House and without YAL, it wouldn’t be possible. YAL offered me a fresh perspective to the status quo. Once I joined my YAL chapter and rose to the position of Chapter President, opportunities began to pour in. YAL provided me with activism and leadership training I couldn't find anywhere else. YAL is unparalleled in the world of campus activism. And for that, I owe the organization a "thank you." Not only did YAL provide me with the philosophical backbone necessary to fight big government bureaucrats on campus, but they also taught me the political process. More importantly, they taught me how to win. As soon as I became a leader of my YAL chapter, I got more involved in my community. It feels like just yesterday that I was in college leading my YAL chapter, but now I'm fighting for liberty in the Missouri State House. There's only one problem: I can't do it alone. Every time I cross paths with a young student at the capitol or in my district, I tell them about everything YAL can offer. I’m amazed at what YAL is doing in my state and across the country. I’m excited to see what the future holds for the organization, and I'll keep doing my part by defending freedom with every vote I take.

YAL 2017 END OF YEAR REPORT

ENDORSEMENTS "The young people at Young Americans for Liberty understand better than any other group in the United States of America what the founding freedoms have meant and what they should mean today, and they are prepared to put into action their understanding and beliefs." – JUDGE ANDREW NAPOLITANO "Young Americans for Liberty does critical work for our cause. Thanks to YAL, young people across the country rally around the ideas of liberty and understand what it takes to win. Their work with college students is unparalleled and will bring the principles of liberty into the mainstream." – DR. RON PAUL "Young Americans for Liberty is the most important youth organization in the country. They are our best chance at winning the hearts and minds of the next generation." – SENATOR RAND PAUL

"Young Americans for Liberty is the premiere youth organization when it comes to the fight for our liberties. With over 900 chapters across the United States, they educate hundreds of thousands of students on the principles of freedom. They are our best hope at creating a generation that respects the Constitution and Bill of Rights." – CONGRESSMAN THOMAS MASSIE "As frustrating as 2016 has been, it has also been a transitional year in American politics. What comes next will be vitally important. For nearly a decade, Young Americans for Liberty has been helping to mold the next generation of libertarian and conservative leaders, becoming the largest center-right political youth organization in the U.S. today. The future looks bright thanks to YAL. I'm excited!" – JACK HUNTER, POLITICS EDITOR, RARE.US "I spoke at the 2016 YAL National Convention and the student leaders in the room gave me hope for the future of America. They endorse open dialogue and debate and stand firm to defend free speech." – KARITH FOSTER, COMEDIAN "Thanks to YAL, the spirit of Liberty is alive and well among our young people. I am incredibly excited about the future, and cannot wait to see all the great things that this generation of Liberty-minded leaders will accomplish!" – GLENN “KANE” JACOBS, PROFESSIONAL WWE WRESTLER, CO-FOUNDER OF TENNESSEE LIBERTY ALLIANCE "Young Americans for Liberty is doing tremendous work to find, train, and empower Libertarian students on campus. As one who has labored for many years to build the Libertarian movement on campus, I greatly appreciate YAL's efforts and accomplishments, and I look forward to even greater success from them." – JAMES LARK, PROFESSOR, UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA "Young Americans for Liberty is one of the best organizations in the liberty movement. They have taught me how to become a more effective activist for liberty." – JULIE BOROWSKI, POLITICAL COMMENTATOR "Young Americans for Liberty, born out of Ron Paul's presidential campaigns, does vitally important work. YAL is on the front lines at universities across America, fighting against collectivist indoctrination and PC intimidation. It's the most uncompromising and principled student organization in the country." – JEFF DEIST, PRESIDENT OF THE MISES INSTITUTE “Among the ranks of Young Americans for Liberty today are men and women who will make history tomorrow. They will be in the vanguard to restore a free and civil society that is united by personal character and a government limited to protecting peace and freedom” – LARRY REED, PRESIDENT OF THE FOUNDATION FOR ECONOMIC EDUCATION
