W
hen I started Young Americans for Liberty in December of 2008, I never could have imaginedthis. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect YAL to e xpand to 675 campus chapters, train more than 2,700 young leaders, or reach millions of young minds with our message. This is unprecedented. No conservative or libertarian youth organization in our country’s history has grown to this size. When I think of all the work and accomplishments from 2015 and before, it’s hard to believe. And I cannot even begin to thank everyone who has made this possible. There are thousands of YAL chapter leaders, members, donors, partner organizations, mentors, and friends who are owed an incredible debt of gratitude from me.

This 2015 End of the Year Report is a testament to the size and strength of the youth movement for liberty. For seven consecutive years, we’ve experienced double -digit growth in everymeasurableaspect of the organization. I hope you share in the same joy as me when you flip through these pages and see these results. THANK YOU!

PRINCIPLE TO PRINCIPLE
Northeast: Rutgers University - New Brunswick YAL @ Rutgers has filled the liberty void on campus. In 2015 alone, they sent a delegation to CPAC and the YAL National Convention to enhance their network and activism skills. They continually promote free speech on campus and can be found displaying a free speech wall and handing out Constitutions outside of Rutgers’ speech zones. Additionally, YAL @ RU held a successful Incarceration Nation event, hosted a documentary screening, and have built a pro-liberty coalition on campus. Their YAL chapter’s presence on campus has definitely been felt by students and the administration.
Southeast: Virginia Tech YAL @ Virginia Tech continues to be the most active organization on campus. They didn’t just follow the instructions for Incarceration Nation, but went even bigger by building a 10’ x 10’ prison display on campus that also raised money for charity! This just one week after hosting 110+ students for the VA State Convention. What’s most admirable about VT YAL is that the passion for liberty members have doesn’t end at graduation -- members have gone on to have internships and full-time jobs through YAL. They credit their success to creating friendships deeper than just politics.
Midwest: University of Iowa Each week, YAL @ University of Iowa participates in activism, like Recruitment Drive, Incarceration Nation, and Free Speech Walls -- often times earning media attention. In Spring, YAL @ UI fought hard to abolish unconstitutional speech codes on campus, by participating in free speech activism events, even when it was -20 degrees outside! Also, YAL @ UI chapter hosted the first ever YAL Iowa State Convention that brought in 200 attendees. Many members have graduated and accepted jobs within the liberty movement. West: California State University Dominguez Hills YAL @ CSUDH is an established advocate for liberty. Every student in the country worries about their student debt, so in response the CSUDH chapter decided to host an activism event called “Drowning in debt” and brought a full size dunk tank to campus to attract students to their booth. That day they signed up over 80 new members and also gained lots of positive attention for their chapter. Because of increase in membership and influence on campus, 2015 has proven to be their most successful year yet!
Central: New Mexico State University
OWN.
2014: 565
The YAL chapter at NMSU has had its most successful year to date! Although it’s difficult to narrow it down to just one, our best event this year was the NRA University event we hosted on September 1. We had 77 students sign-up for our chapter during the two days that we tabled before the event, and a whopping 80 students in attendance at the event -- it was standing room only! It is apparent that NMSU Aggies love liberty! We are looking forward to an even bigger 2016.

EDUCATE: USING TECHNOLOGY TO An astounding 9 9.99% of millennials are online. A s Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube grow in reach, so to does their influence -- most young people turn to these online sources to get their news and information. Long gone are the days of dominance by traditional TV and newspapers. The times have changed. Fortunately, YAL’s online presence is unmatched. In 2015, YAL’s Facebook “ reach” was a staggering 780 million. Our weekly engagement n umbers — anyone who likes, comments, or shares our content — averaged higher than Obama’s. These results are incredible!

SOPHY OF LIBERTY One of our most effective r ecruitment tools is our custom-made Political Q uiz. YAL chapters ask students 10 freedom-oriented questions, and based on their response, the student falls into 1 of 4 quadrants — libertarian, right, statist, or left. It’s a quick, engaging way to find new students who didn’t even know they were interested in the ideas of liberty and sign them up.
Thanks to our partner organizations for distributing their resources to YAL chapters

Recruitment drive: One simple goal — YAL chapters signup as many students interested in the ideas of liberty as humanly possible. Defend the Constitution YAL chapters build giant Constitution displays to grab attention and improve students’ understanding of the Bill of Rights. Fight for Free Speech YAL chapters erect a massive free speech wall in the middle of campus and allow for free expression. A great way to celebrate your rights.
YAL @ UNCC chapter President Chris Nosko facilitates gives a presentation about the philosophy of liberty at a weekly meeting.
YAL @ UW-Green Bay comes out in full force at their school’s Campus Org Smorg event.
Incarceration Nation YAL chapters build mock prisons and show students just how easy it is to find themselves, or someone they love, in prison with today’s excessive laws. Visualize the Debt The debt is growing so fast, we can’t keep up. YAL chapters create giant debt clocks on campus to show students just how massive our burden has become.
YAL members in Maryland get together to celebrate their hard work at a social event.
Generation of War Our generation grew up with war. Many of our friends and family members have been severely impacted. We raise awareness of the dangers our foreign policy has created. Occupy the Honor roll To show the unfairness of wealth distribution, YAL chapters ask students studying in the library if they will “re-distribute their GPAaverages” so failing students can share in their success, too. Protest the TSA We set up fake body scanners on campus and tell students it’s for their own protection. Students quickly realize the horrors of and violations which ensue after giving up your rights.

EDUCATE: STUDENTS ON THE PHILOS IMPACT ON CAMPUS
Here are a few of the thousands of stories from YAL chapters this year Audra Malek Cleveland State University 2015
John Nagle American University 2017 This year the American University YAL chapter had a great success with a meeting on criminal justice reform. AU YAL member Andrew Magloughlin did a thorough job of explaining the ways in which the current justice system fails and ways to reform it. In addition to the informative presentation and interesting discussion, this meeting was followed up by snacks and time for members to chat and get to know one another.

Our success story for 2015 is an event we held to support school choice in the US. CSU has such a diverse group of students on campus and people came out to support the cause from all different backgrounds. This issue is so important because education is the key to a free society and it starts with the individual. Having better schools is a good thing but the individual must have a willingness to learn as well.
Anthony Schuckel Purdue University 2019 In October, we did a national debt tabling event. It was held outside near one of the most popular spots on campus. We engaged with hundreds of people on deep topics concerning liberty and the debt. So many people became interested in liberty just from talking for a moment out of their day. We even had many people sign up to join our chapter. We’re excited about more successful events in 2016.
George Washington University 2019 We hosted our very first Free Speech Ball event on campus, and it was wildly popular with our students. Our chapter is new, and I would mark our activism on campus as our greatest success. In liberal DC, the fact that we are on campus and getting positive reactions from fellow students is a miracle in and of itself. We have 20+ members currently but we’re looking forward to becoming one of the most active YAL chapters out there! 16

Kaleigh Cunningham Kutztown University of Pennsylvania 2017 Our chapter went from three founding officers in the summer to close to 20 people attending each meeting. Our chapter won a $1,000 dollar grant for our free speech wall on constitution day. After tabling and YAL-O-WEEN we ended up taking seven members for a liberty conference. Our chapter is growing daily and catching the eye of the university president, student government board, and the political science department.
Sonia Elossais Coe College 2018 We are just starting out on campus at Coe College. Although met with a little resistance from administration, we are now an official organization on campus. We’re ready to show people what it really means to exercise your rights and freedoms as an American, even if it means getting a little controversial. We’re also planning to end of free speech zones on our campus, and put issues in perspective for our fellow students.
SOPHY OF LIBERTY FREE SPEECH ON CAMPUS Opposition to First Amendment Rights by restrictive speech codes on campuses at an all time high in 2015. Below are stories of YAL chapters taking action and standing up for Free Speech.
Dixie State University
Garrett Kehr Capital University 2018 Starting off on our inaugural semester at Capital University our leadership team was unsure what to expect. With a historically apathetic campus and low levels of student involvement in campus organizations our hopes were not set too high. As the year progressed we were pleasantly surprised to have our concerns dashed away. Now that the semester draws to an end we are one of the most active organizations on campus.
The Dixie State University YAL chapter had a very interesting year that started with the school denying the chapter the ability to hand out flyers on campus that mocked President Obama, Che Guervara, and President Bush. The school said that it was against their policy to have flyers that were “disparaging” or “mocked individuals”. To make matters worse, the school also relegated the chapter’s free speech wall to a small patio space, the “free speech zone” on campus with no traffic. The chapter then looked for assistance from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. With the help of FIRE, YAL members sued Dixie State University. Earlier this fall, the case was finally settled. Dixie State agreed to revise the campus policies targeted by the lawsuit to meet First Amendment standards. These include the University’s unconstitutional flier approval process, posting policies, club event policies, and ‘free-speech zone’ policy.
The flyer that administrators on campus at USU called “disparaging.”
University of Hawaii at Hilo
Brandon Clements University of Oregon 2017 Our best success in 2015 has been promoting the second annual Liberty Poker Night. It is a “free to play” poker tournament that is expecting 200+ attendees. We have two firearms donated from local gun stores as prizes and former State Rep Jeff Kropf speaking on the dangers of gun-free campuses. The event is accompanying a student senate resolution we are hoping to pass that will urge administrators to remove the policy that forbids concealed carry on campus.
During a school-sponsored, student organization fair, the YAL members decided to use an effective tabling tactic and began to walk around and pass out constitutions to students. This prompted school officials to demand YAL members cease dispersing literature, as it violated the school’s protocols saying, “It’s not about your rights in this case, it’s about the University policy that you can’t approach people.” University officials then sent out an email to all student organizations telling them to stay inside the “Free Speech Zone” and not to approach students. This “Zone” limited the students to a .3-acre, flood-prone, low-traffic spot on campus. On January 6, 2015, a FIRE media release was published stating that the University of Hawaii had settled the case. The entire UH system changed the policies to include free speech and distribution of literature in “all areas generally available to students and the community” without prior administrative permission.students and the community” without prior administrative permission.

EDUCATE: STUDENTS ON THE PHILOS Shawn Billups Indiana University Southeast 2017 So far this school year, YAL @ IUS best success story is our Constitution Week event. We decided to do a Free Speech Ball because it was a fun way to engage with students about Free Speech. The seven foot ball brought together students from all over the political spectrum and we were able to get about 40 sign-ups. At our follow up meeting, 12 students came out to learn more about YAL and our mission, as well as, other important issues that we face in our society. It was an exciting time and we couldn’t have done it without YAL’s support.
Jason Stewart University of Delaware 2017 This year our chapter of Young Americans for Liberty at the University of Delaware has tripled in size. While we were always reaching a large number of students through our activism events, pulling in new members to our meetings proved difficult last year. We had a core group of five junior guys including myself that would come to every meeting and a few other members that would come sporadically. This year I am proud to say we have more regular female members than male as well as more freshman members that are crucial for the continued growth and stability of our chapter. Especially as our senior members prepare to graduate from the university and pursue jobs in the liberty movement.
Karrie Comfort California State University of Long Beach 2017 We are just starting out on campus at Coe College. Although met with a little resistance from administration, we are now an official organization on campus. We’re ready to show people what it really means to exercise your rights and freedoms as an American, even if it means getting a little controversial. We’re also planning to end of free speech zones on our campus, and put issues in perspective for our fellow students.
Nicole Sanders Blinn College 2016 YAL at Blinn College started 2015 with a First Amendment lawsuit against our school with the help of FIRE. Our chapter has grown from one member in the beginning of the fall semester to 12 active members by the middle of the semester. We have a great leadership board and others ready to step up when our leaders graduate. 18

Zach Rachuba UNC-Chapel Hill 2016 On November 5, UNC YAL was happy to host a Virtual Libert Speakers event by Dr. Chris Preble of the Cato Institute on the topic of a more peaceful and libertarian foreign policy. To advertise the event, YAL members set up a booth near the pit—a central pavilion on campus—to showcase a game of “Pin the Drone on the War Zone” to raise awareness about reckless military intervention. Students would try to guess which countries on a map of the greater Middle East had been targets of U.S. military intervention. The poster, paid for by a YAL grant, was a great way to attract attention and interest from the crowd. UNC YAL has had a successful semester, and was able to recruit about ten new active members while increasing awareness and exposure of the ideas of liberty on campus. We look forward to further success in the future.
SOPHY OF LIBERTY Taylor Anderson Eastern Washington University 2017 The best success we have had here at EWU was during our Welcome Week recruitment drive! All of the new students were looking for a place to fit in, and a way to get connected around campus. We even had City Council members come up to our booth to learn a bit more about what it means to be “liberty-orientated!” It was great to see so many students interested in what we had to say, we even got 50+ sign ups that day! It was a fun experience getting to talk with students from all political backgrounds, and they were all interested in the ideals of the youth liberty movement!
Natalie Frye University of Central Arkansas 2017 Our best success story is from our Fall recruitment drive at the beginning of the semester. We had a lot of interaction with the students on campus, and they loved our fun energy. We had a blast playing music, acting silly, and taking pictures with our Ron Paul cutout. It was a great way for UCA students to see our personalities, which brought a lot of new members in. We got almost 200 sign ups that day!
Megan Walker Samford University 2017 Our chapter was freshly chartered this year. Founding a core group of students who are passionate about the liberty movement was our greatest success. We have grown together as a liberty family, striving to have a presence on campus. We are gaining official organization recognition for next semester, all because of the long hours of work our core group put forth.
John Junco Daytona State College 2018 Daytona Beach’s chapter has taken a vow this semester to dedicate a large portion of our time simply improving our local community through volunteering. We have decided to volunteer at the bare minimum, once a month to not only strengthen our network, but also establish a positive relationship between our chapter and our local community.
Grace Charlton
Kevin Caputo Penn State University 2016 After our Free Speech Wall was taken down by the police early in the semester for protesting without a permit, we decided to turn a giant beach ball (~6 feet) into a Free Speech Ball. Members of our chapter rolled it around campus until dark. It was a huge success!
University of Virginia 2017 Incarceration Nation at the University of Virginia resonated with students from all backgrounds since just a week before our event, ABC agents had assaulted a UVA student. We got 157 new sign ups from students saying they wanted to #FixTheSystem. Then, we hosted a panel with Professor Sherri Moore (Commercial Law professor at UVA and former defense attorney), Ben Jones (Conservatives Concerned About the Death Penalty), and Luke Kenworthy (Generation Opportunity). Over 115 people attended our panel and learned about overcriminalization, mandatory minimum sentences, and police militarization. More importantly, our panelists offered solutions to these problems and 100+ UVA students left more educated on the issue of criminal justice reform than when they came in. young americans for liberty

YAL SUCCESS STORIES YAL transforms students into lifelong activists and leaders for liberty Mikayla Hall
Speechwriter, House Republican Conference University of Washington – Seattle 2011 Role(s) in YAL: One of YAL’s earliest dues paying member, Chapter President, Washington State Chair, Campus Activism Intern, Northwest Regional Director
I first started with YAL in fall of 2008, when I co-founded the chapter at the University of Washington in Seattle. In a four year period, I served as an intern, Washington State Chair, and later the Northwest Regional Director. My experience with YAL has profoundly impacted my career in two ways. First, I learned vital leadership and communication skills, by learning how to organize and motivate student groups around a common cause. But also technical skills like writing press releases and blog posts -- skills I use every day now. Second, the group introduced me to a network of passionate activists and organizations that inspire me, and helped guide me on my journey through internships and my first job on Capitol Hill. YAL taught me to be a principled leader, and I’m thankful for my time working with them!
Cliff Maloney Jr.
National Youth Director, Rand Paul 2016 University of Pittsburgh - Johnstown 2013 Role(s) in YAL: Chapter President, Pennsylvania State Chair, Northeast Region Director
I first got involved with Young Americans for Liberty as student at the University of Pittsburgh - Johnstown when I started my YAL chapter. After a successful semester on campus I was offered the role of YAL’s Pennsylvania State Chair and upon graduation the Northeast Regional Director role, growing and cultivating YAL chapters in 14 different states. The leadership and management skills that I learned through YAL has not only set me up for success in my role as National Youth Director on the Rand Paul Campaign but to be successful throughout my entire career. Now more than ever I am confident in the future of our country, thanks to YAL and YAL leaders nationwide.
Zack Martin
Outreach and Coalitions, Charles Koch Institute Ohio State University 2012 Role(s) in YAL : Ohio State Chair, Field Program Intern
I don’t know what life would look like short of my involvement with YAL. I owe much of my understanding early on about what makes for a free society to the education I was provided by my YAL chapter, on a campus that’s otherwise a bastion for leftist ideology. After graduation, YAL gave me the opportunity to develop my professional resume as a state chair in Ohio, as well as providing me with an unforgettable internship in Washington, DC. I attribute my employment at CKI today in large part because of the chance YAL took on me, and I’m so grateful for the work they do for thousands of others like me across the country to advance freedom!

MOBILIZE: FOR VICTORY Emma Benson
Campus Director, Americans for Prosperity Foundation - North Carolina North Carolina State University- Raleigh 2013 Role(s) in YAL : Chapter leader, North Carolina State Chair, Field Program Intern
Young Americans for Liberty is the reason I got involved in campus activism while a student at NC State University. As a business major, my reasons for getting involved were due to my experiences both in the classroom and seeing my dad close his business in 2010 due to government regulations. By getting involved with Young Americans for Liberty, not only did I meet lifelong friends but I was also given the opportunity to network with other free market groups that led to a job right after graduation. YAL equipped me with the skills to not only engage students while attending NC State, but continue the fight for Liberty as a full time career.
Tim Bertram
Account Manager, Harris Media Saint Cloud State University 2013 Role(s) in YAL : Chapter President, Minnesota State Chair, Midwest Regional Director
I owe a great deal of my success and career to joining my YAL chapter during my freshmen year in college. YAL led me to many opportunities to learn how to win campaigns, engage with the media, learn how to fundraise, and taught me leadership and management skills. Once I graduated school, I was hired by Morton Blackwell to run his PAC, and I can say with certainty that I was hired because of my involvement with YAL. I then began my career in public relations and digital marketing, which are skills I began to develop from my time with YAL.
Billy Grant
West Regional Director, Rand Paul 2016 Hamline University 2015 Role(s) in YAL : Chapter President, Minnesota State Chair
I began my involvement with YAL as a Chapter President at Hamline University – St. Paul in Minnesota and quickly grew my YAL chapter to one of the strongest in the state. However, the highlight of my collegiate career was my involvement in YAL’s State Chair program working with likeminded YAL members throughout the Minnesota -- I even won the State Chair of the Year Award during the 2015! Through YAL I’ve learned professional skills and made friendships that will last a lifetime. Because of my involvement with YAL I was able to get a position on the Rand Paul campaign organizing students in the West Region full time.
Chris Harrelson
Student Latter Day Saints Business College 2016 Role(s) in YAL : Chapter President, Utah State Chair
If it weren’t for my work as a Utah State Chair with Young Americans for Liberty I would not have achieved half of what I have so far. Even as a college student I have been able to advance my positions more effectively than many involved in politics who carry masters and law degrees. I have dedicated my life to building Young Americans for Liberty and the greater movement for Liberty as well. Were it not for YAL the future of freedom in the United States would not be so hopeful. YAL is training the next generation of leaders who will return our nation to the principles, ideas and philosophy that it was founded on. Classical Liberalism influenced the greatest revolution in science, technology and humanity ever experience in human history. YAL now carries that philosophy that will continue to shape the future of our nation and global community. 26
