Open to All The YMCA is dedicated to remaining open to people of all ages, races, ethnicities, religions, abilities and financial circumstances. Families with annual household incomes less than $75,000 and individuals earning less than $60,000 qualify for income-based rates. Financial assistance is also available. Facility Membership Facility Membership allows access to all 15 branch locations throughout the Greater Richmond and Petersburg areas, including all programs offered. You also gain access to the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA’s branch locations throughout the Williamsburg area as well as most YMCAs nationally through our Always Welcome At a YMCA (A.W.A.Y.) program. Community Membership Community Members pay an annual membership fee, plus the Community Member rate for selected programs. Community Members receive an official YMCA member card, access to locker rooms and lounge areas, a quarterly YMCA magazine and invitations to special Community Member events. YMCA Day Camps provide an enriching summer experience. Designed to promote friendships and growth in a supervised setting, day camps offer children opportunities to gain leadership and teambuilding skills while having fun. Day camp activities at branches may include swim lessons, arts & crafts, skits and games, outdoor exploration, music, family nights and more. Day camp activities vary by branch. Preschool-Age Day Camps CH, GO, PH, PO School-Age Day Camps CH, CK, CT, GO, MD, PB, PH, SG, TK YMCA Specialty Camps Are you looking for a truly special experience for your child that will teach them new skills and spark their imagination? If so, then YMCA Specialty Camps are the answer to your child’s summer! We have a camp for any child’s interest including leadership development, arts & humanities, creative movement, rock climbing, music, cooking and more. Teenagers will love our Teen Xtreme camps, which may take them on exciting field trips while teaching them valuable leadership and teambuilding skills. YMCA Sports Camps Choose from a wide variety of sports camps to foster the development of your current or future athlete. In YMCA Sports Camps, everyone plays and everyone wins. Camps are based on our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, and promote competition in a friendly environment. Sports camps vary by branch and may include softball, soccer, flag football, basketball, dodgeball, golf, baseball, tennis, field hockey, gymnastics and sports combo camps. Chester Family YMCA The Chester Family YMCA offers a variety of Day Camp and Specialty Camps. Camp Red Feather enhances the summer for rising K-6th graders with fun, structured outdoor camp activities on 23 beautiful acres. Bi-weekly field trips are included. Teen programs include the adventurous Teen Adventure or Service Camp. A variety of sports camps are also offered for preschool through middle-school-aged youth. Week-long Splash Camp combines arts and crafts with swim lessons. Chickahominy Family YMCA School-age day camps such as Camp Chickahominy are offered for rising K-8th graders and provide a traditional outdoor camp atmosphere with activities such as field games, dance, drama, outdoor education, arts & crafts, swimming lessons and more! Counselors in Training teaches rising 8th-10th graders leadership skills and the fundamentals of working with children. Sports Camps teach soccer, basketball, cheerleading, dodgeball and flag football and are available according to age. Teen programs include Teen Adventure or Service Camp.

Downtown Family YMCA Summer Child Care at the Downtown YMCA is available for preschool through elementary-school-age children. The Summer Preschool program for ages 2 1/2 - 5 provides a stimulating and educational environment. School-Age Summer Child Care for ages 5-12 instills our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility in a structured setting. John Rolfe Family YMCA Specialty Camps are the cornerstone of the John Rolfe Family YMCA’s summer camp programming. The Babysitters’ Club for rising 4th-8th graders teaches babysitters-in-training how to care for younger children safely and playfully. Kreative Kitchen Cooking Camps allow children to discover new tastes, skills and interest in the kitchen. Science Camp brings out everyone’s inner Einstein!

Goochland Family YMCA Children ages 3-5 in full or half-day camps will love making new friends, swimming and singing camp songs in the natural setting of the Goochland Family YMCA. Camp Gooch provides the opportunity for children and youth ages 6-13 to engage in outdoor activities, discover nature and enjoy the natural environment, while acquiring new skills, building self-confidence and establishing lasting friendships. Campers can experience creative arts, water sports, field trips, outdoor discovery and more! Also offered are a variety of Sports and Specialty Camps including soccer, gymnastics, arts and dance. Teen Extreme will stretch the limits of rising 7th – 10th graders with rock climbing, canoeing, tubing, hiking and more!

Manchester Family YMCA The Manchester Family YMCA offers Summer Explorers Camp for rising K-5th graders. Teen Xtreme Adventure Camp, for rising 6th-9th graders, keeps teens active and engaged while developing interpersonal and leadership skills. Sports Camps offer children ages 5 years to rising 5th graders the opportunity to learn fundamental skills involved in playing sports with an emphasis on fun! Sports include baseball/T-ball, sports sampler, flag football and basketball.

North Richmond YMCA Community Center The Little Explorers camp provides children ages 2 1/2-5 years old educational activities combined with field trips, swimming, art and science programs. Children ages 5-12 can participate in Y Adventure Camp which opens up new worlds through swimming, field trips, art and science. Teen Xtreme gives your teen an enriching summer experience building confidence and leadership skills through service learning projects, field trips and special events.

Elizabeth Randolph Lewis Powhatan Family YMCA Summer Explorers offers an experience for children ages 5-12 that builds confidence in a safe, structured environment while promoting social and emotional growth. Half-day Preschool Camp promotes growth through art, nature, science, outdoor games, reading, puzzles and fine motor skill development. Ambitious rising 7th-9th graders aspiring to be future counselors receive hands-on training in the Junior Counselor In Training program. Your budding athlete will have a blast in our half-day Sports Combo Camp for grades K-5. Teen Excursions Camp, provides 7th-10th graders with team-building activities and daily field trips to exciting destinations like Kings Dominion, Colonial Williamsburg, Skate Nation and more. Shady Grove Family YMCA Our flagship Day Camp, Camp Kanawha, for rising 1st5th graders, offers a truly special summer adventure. Kinder Camp provides children ages 3-6 with a creative environment that incorporates art, singing, games, outdoor play and more. Sports Camps for ages 5 years to 5th graders emphasize fun through developmental drills, games and contests. We are also offering Guitar Camp, Film-Making Boot Camp, Teen Extreme Adventure Camp and Camp E.D.G.E. (Educate, Develop, Give, Experience). Midlothian Family YMCA Whether your child craves outdoor adventure or indoor activities, the Midlothian Family YMCA has a camp to suit your needs. Accredited by the American Camp Association, our camps offer children and teens a safe and fun place to enjoy the summer. Our highly trained counselors are committed to making your child’s experience the best it can be, from developing life-long friendships to sharing the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Camp Saponi offers rising 1st – 6th graders a traditional outdoor day-camp experience in a rustic, 25-acre setting. Each camper will learn new skills and build new relationships. Activities include outdoor education, music and drama, arts and crafts, archery, low ropes course, field games and swimming lessons in our outdoor pool. Although Camp Saponi is coeducational, campers are grouped by age and gender. For the sports enthusiast, we offer Soccer Camp, basketball and our Sports Combo Camp, where your child will enjoy a half day in our day camp program combined with a half day of sports-focused fun! EveryBuddy Special Needs Camp provides a nurturing environment for children ages 5-12. Teen Extreme Camp, for rising 7th-10th graders, helps build friendships while developing interpersonal and leadership skills. Activities include rock climbing, kayaking, tubing, hiking, splash parks, laser tag and a trip to Kings Dominion!

Petersburg Family YMCA Preschool and elementary-school-age children will have a blast at Petersburg Family YMCA’s Summer Child Care programs! Children will participate in weekly swimming lessons, music, drama, theme sessions, devotions, creative art, parents’ night and nature activities. This format promotes diversity in learning and contributes to a well-rounded summer experience.

Patrick Henry Family YMCA Camp Tonkawa, a unique camp for rising 7th-9th graders will offer a different field trip every day and engage in weekly community service activities. Junior and Senior Camp Winnipeg are traditional day camps for rising K-6th graders. Ambitious 9th-12th graders will find ample opportunities for growth and leadership development through the Counselors In Training (CIT) program. CITs learn and project the YMCA’s core values throughout the camp day. 23


Tuckahoe Family YMCA YMCA Camp Tuckahoe provides a safe and unique outdoor experience tailored to making great new friends and building new skills. Activities are age appropriate and taught by carefully selected camp counselors. Sports Combo Camps and PeeWee Sports Camps include soccer, basketball, baseball/T-ball, ultimate Frisbee and more for various age groups. Kinder camp programs offer swim lessons, group activities and afternoon rest time. Junior campers also receive swim lessons and attend a weekly field trip. Tween Camp programs are designed for children transitioning from grade school to middle school. Every Buddy Camp Tuckahoe is designed for ages 5-12 who

function best in groups with a low camper to counselor ratio. Teens in Leadership Training (TILT) is ideal for rising 8th-10th graders who want to improve leadership skills. Counselors in Training (CIT) for ages 13-17 is designed for teens who aspire to be future camp staff members. Camp Adventure for rising 7th-10th graders offers daily trips. YMCA Camp Thunderbird Day Camp Established in 1966, YMCA Camp Thunderbird boasts breathtaking natural beauty while providing a structured camp environment full of all the amenities a camper could ever want. One hundred acres of pristine woods encompass six-acre Lake George Camp attractions include archery, horseback riding, canoeing, nature exploration, swim lessons and a whole lot more!

YMCA Camp Thunderbird is truly a unique experience, and we want to serve as many kids as possible! We provide FREE bus stops throughout the Greater Richmond community.

YMCA Leaders-in-Training Designed for rising 9th and 10th graders, YMCA Leadersin-Training builds future leaders through mentorship and responsibility. Activities and field trips vary by week. A Place for EveryBuddy Our EveryBuddy curriculum helps special needs children experience camp. Due to the low 3:1 camper-to-staff ratio, space is limited to only twelve campers per two-week session. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and a final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.

We offer a large variety of water-based exercise classes including water walking, water aerobics, water sports and more. This revolutionary method of leveraged bodyweight exercise allows you to safely perform hundreds of exercises that build power, strength, flexibility, balance, and mobility and prevent injuries – all at the intensity you choose. Instruction is offered in a class format and/or equipment is available throughout the day for individual use depending on location.

Aquatics Adult Swim Lessons CH, CK, DT, GO, MD, MN, NR, PB, PH, PO, SG, TK It’s never too late to learn how to swim or to brush up on your technique. Our adult swim lesson participants are grouped by ability to ensure fundamental swimming techniques are mastered before advancing to more difficult classes. We have beginner and intermediate classes for participants ages 13 and up. Aquatic Fitness Classes CH, CK, DT, GO, MD, MN, NR, PB, PH, PO, SG, TK Participants ages 15 and older can improve their cardiovascular fitness, muscular conditioning and flexibility. Trips GO, MD, MN, NR, PB, PO, SG, TK Go on trips and socialize with other active adults. Branches coordinate various trips, often in conjunction with one another. Trips may range from daytime outings to multiple-day getaways.

Lifeguard Certification – Red Cross CH, CK, GO, MD, PO, TK This program allows individuals to become certified lifeguards. It includes lifeguard, first aid and CPR/AED certification. Participants must be able to swim 300 yards continuously including 100 yards breaststroke and 100 freestyle or breaststroke.

Masters Swimming DT, MD, PH, SG, TK This program for ages 14 and up is geared toward the individual who wants to improve endurance, technique and learn new strokes. Beginner, intermediate and advanced workouts are available. This is a great training program for triathletes. Medically-Based Classes CH, CK, MD, PB, SG, TK The Y offers aquatics classes for those with certain medical conditions including arthritis and multiple sclerosis. All of our branches are open to populations with special needs. Classes vary by branch. Please contact your local Y to learn more. One-on-One Swim Lessons CH, CK, DT, GO, MD, MN, NR, PB, PO, SG, TK Take advantage of one-on-one time with a knowledgeable instructor to work on basic or advanced fundamentals of swimming and water safety. For ages 3 and older. Parent/Child Swim Lessons CH, CK, DT, GO, MD, MN, NR, PB, PH, PO, SG, TK You and your six-month to three-year-old child will love these fun, game-filled, half-hour lessons. Positive reinforcement helps your child enjoy the water, never forcing them to submerge. This is an excellent introduction to the pool and our preschool swim lessons. Preschool Swim Lessons CH, CK, DT, GO, MD, MN, NR, PB, PH, PO, SG, TK Preschool swim lessons teach fundamental swimming skills to children ages 3-5. Basic skills and water safety are taught throughout the course as children are encouraged to interact with instructors in a relaxed and fun environment. Participants are grouped into classes by ability, which include the following levels: Pike (beginner), Eel (advanced beginner), Ray (intermediate), and Starfish (advanced).

Summer Swim Team MD Participants ages 4-18 must be able to swim at least one length of the pool freestyle and one length of backstroke. Skilled coaching staff will help your child with stroke technique and endurance while always incorporating the Y core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The Midlothian Tidal Waves are proud members of the James River Aquatics Club. Swim Clinics – Between Seasons CH, CK, DT, GO, MN, NR, PH, TK Designed to allow current swim team members ages 5-18 the opportunity to stay in shape during the off season or for prospective members to learn technique and strengthen endurance. Swim For Life CH, CK, PH Swim for Life is a get-healthy, get-fit program for all ages tailored to your schedule. Swim laps any time that’s convenient for you! Just list your name and laps swum on a provided index card and your miles will be tracked for you. See how far you can swim! Available anytime there is a lap lane open. USS Long Course Swim Team SG, TK We offer a year-round, progressive swim team program that involves a higher level of competition and a more advanced workout schedule. This requires a larger commitment by the swimmer and parents when compared to our swim league. This program involves travel swim meets out of the area as well as several local United States Swimming (USS) meets.

YMCA Swim Teams CH, CK, GO, MD, MN, PB, PH, PO, SG, TK Participants ages 5-18 must be able to swim at least one length of the pool. Skilled coaching staff will help your child with stroke technique and endurance while always incorporating the Y core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Teams will compete against other branches during swim meets.

Arts and Humanities Adult Dance DT, GO, MD, NR, TK Learn how to dance or brush up on your skills. Instruction and styles taught vary by branch. Art Classes SG You and your family will love our various art classes, ranging from pottery to painting to drawing to portraits. Film-Making Class SG This 8-10 week class offers young people a great first experience making a film. Students will learn basics of writing, storyboarding, filming, directing, acting, editing and much more. Each student will receive a DVD copy of their group’s finished product. A final showing will unveil the projects to friends, family and Y staff on the last day of the program. Group Music Classes SG If one-on-one lessons are too expensive or time consuming, then you can choose group instruction. Choose from Preschool Piano, Group Guitar for Adults, Group Piano for Adults, and more. Classes are usually 4 weeks in length for an hour each class. Many classes are offered year-round.

Songwriter’s Workshop SG This monthly workshop focuses on the art and craft of songwriting. Local songwriters will perform songs and discuss the stories behind their favorites, as well as answer questions and describe their songwriting techniques. The workshop meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Youth Dance CH, GO, MD, PO, SG Explore different styles of dance. Try out ballet, hip hop, jazz and more. Instruction and styles taught vary by branch.

Child Care Fun Fridays CH Fun Fridays for ages 3-5 provides two hours of crafts, stories and/or adventures. Licensed Early Childhood Education CH, DT, GO, MD, NR, SG Full- and half-day programs are offered for children ages 2 1/2-5. Based on the Creative Curriculum, these programs address social, emotional, physical, cognitive and language development, embracing hands-on learning through play. Structured activities help children bond with peers and caring adults while they prepare for kindergarten.

Youth Swim Lessons CH, CK, DT, GO, MD, MN, NR, PB, PH, PO, SG, TK Beginners focus on developing freestyle and proper rotary breathing, while advanced levels focus on other skills such as backstroke. This progressive program for children ages 6-12 is divided into six levels based on participant ability. These include Polliwog (beginner), Guppy (advanced beginner), Minnow (intermediate), Fish (advanced intermediate), Flying Fish (advanced) and Shark (most advanced).

Recording Services SG Take advantage of our digital recording capabilities to capture your budding musician, songwriting teenager or your open mic talent. Or let us convert your old tapes and records to CD. Studio times are in two- or four-hour blocks. Conversion is priced on filling a CD.

Music Lessons JR, MD, PH, PO, SG Enjoy weekly one-on-one lessons on a variety of instruments including piano, guitar, bass, flute, strings, drums, woodwinds and brass. Recitals and performance opportunities available. Music lessons offered vary by branch. 27


BlastballŽ GO, MD, MN, NR, PO, SG, TK An entry-level form of T-Ball for children ages 3-4. Players learn the foundations of batting, catching and throwing. Junior Leaders’ Club MN, PO, SG, TK This program is similar to Leaders’ Club, but is offered for middle-school-aged youth. Middle School Enrichment Programs GO G.M.A.C. (Goochland Middle Action Challenge) is an after-school enrichment program for middle-schoolaged youth. Participants meet three times a week (twice at their school and once at the Y) for structured recreational activities and academic assistance.

Teen Bible Study SG, TK Teen Bible Study is a free program that offers participants opportunities to join in Christian fellowship with other teens and to delve into God’s word. Teens in Action MD, TK The mission of the Teens in Action club is to provide volunteer and social opportunities for teens in the Y while developing leadership skills in a positive atmosphere that fosters a sense of belonging and encouragement. Teens will be required to attend a volunteer workshop. Club members are also asked to participate in essential monthly meetings. Youth in Government/Model General Assembly CH, GO, MD, PO, SG, TK This program for high school youth grades 9-12 helps to promote leadership and civic responsibility in the youth of our community. The Model General Assembly provides youth with an invaluable experience as future leaders of Virginia’s system of government. Youth learn the importance of citizen participation and public service. Leaders’ Club CH, CK, DT, GO, MD, MN, NR, PB, PH, PO, SG, TK YMCA Leaders’ Club provides teens ages 13-18 with knowledge, training, communication skills and valuable team-building experience through volunteering in Y programs and the community. Leaders’ Club trains teens to better serve their community and the Y as they encourage each other to make a positive impact for present and future generations. Qualifying leaders may participate in Blue Ridge Leaders’ School, a week-long school held in June that is run by the South Field YMCAs with a main focus on fitness and leadership development. Metro Teen DT Metro Teens practice the skills they need to become tomorrow’s leaders. Through hands-on activities, group projects and guest speakers, teens learn about the issues that affect their community and discuss youth-oriented solutions.
