DEAR FRIENDS, The YMCA OF GREATER RICHMOND had much to celebrate in 2013. It was a year of impact, discovery and strategic vision. This Impact Report allows us to reflect proudly on what we accomplished and look forward to the work still ahead in our commitment to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. It is my sincere hope that in reading this report you will understand that none of this would be possible without your support. Thank you for all that you do to help us create a stronger, healthier community. Perhaps our greatest accomplishment last year was the development of the new 2025 Strategic Plan. YMCA OF GREATER RICHMOND leaders came together, with the help of many community partners, with a clear goal of building upon the work of this great organization, while still addressing the needs of our evolving community. Our goal was realized with the development of the Strategic Plan. Under this plan, the Y will: • • • • •

Reach more youth during Out of School time Increase learning opportunities for teens Reduce obesity among youth and adults Reduce the occurrence of diabetes in adults Be inclusive and accessible to people and neighborhoods across Central Virginia

The Strategic Plan outlines our vision for the next 11 years and will serve as our compass for future programs and services. Our collective focus on these objectives and our strength in working together enables us to face the future with optimism.

that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighborhoods. We collaborate with partner organizations in a shared, collective effort to build community and reach across economic, geographic and cultural barriers. WE CALL THAT COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.

HERE’S A SNAPSHOT OF HOW THE Y IS IMPACTING LIVES EVERY SINGLE DAY.

HEALTHY LIVING In 2013, we developed THE PEDOMETER PROJECT An interactive look at the benefits of YMCA Summer Camp. Every summer, more than 4,000 children build friendships and learn new skills at Y camp. But camp is also healthy!

HERE’S WHAT WE DISCOVERED: At YMCA Summer Camp, children walk 194,483 miles, that equates to 7,423 marathons, which equals to 65 trips across the U.S., WHICH IS

EQUAL TO ORBITING THE EARTH 8 TIMES.

ACTIVE ADULTS

By 2040, there will be more people over the age of 60 than under the age of 18. Through the YMCA Growing Younger Program, the Y is on the leading edge of community-driven programs to keep active older adults engaged, prevent isolationism and increase physical activity.

WELLNESS About 1 in 7 adults in Virginia has diabetes, and one out of every three who have it don’t know.* Joining in the

fight against chronic disease, the Y launched a Diabetes Prevention and Management program. *www.medicine.virginia.edu In the first year, we exceeded our goal with more than 200 participants.

ACCORDING TO GALLUP, RICHMOND RANKS AS THE THIRD “MOST OBESE MAJOR U.S. COMMUNITY.” The survey company found 28.8 percent of the more than one million people who live in metro-Richmond are obese.*

The Y is expanding its efforts in fighting obesity and helping individuals improve their health and well-being. Under the direction of the 2025 Strategic Plan, we aim to be a leader in decreasing the risk for lifestylerelated diseases and to be a catalyst to change attitudes toward healthy living, thus empowering our community. *www.gallup.com

IN 2013, THE Y LAUNCHED YMCA FALL INTO FITNESS, a communitywide campaign aimed at building a healthier community one person at a time. More than 5,000 people took part in the campaign which allowed them to use local Y facilities for free. Local families also participated in a bike ride with Senator Mark Warner at Belle Isle and NFL Play 60 with the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and former Washington Redskins football players were among those in attendance at NFL Play 60.

SUMMER CAMP

Each day of the summer, more than 4,000 children explore their world at YMCA OF GREATER RICHMOND Summer Camps. Y camp is a unique place to teach and learn, giving children the opportunity to grow their skill development, make lifelong friendships and provides an atmosphere of healthy living and self-reliance. Most important, children have fun!

COLONIAL RIDGE

Beyond the walls of the Y. Every year, the YMCA OF GREATER RICHMOND impacts lives across Greater Richmond through programs beyond the Y walls! In Chester, the Y provides Teen LINC (Learning Interactively in Neighborhoods and Communities) an on-site after-school mentoring program for children at the Section 8 housing complex of Colonial Ridge. Teen LINC not only gives youth a safe, enriching environment, but introduces them to a life beyond their neighborhood through college tours, as well as learning how to run a business from local business owners.

RICHMOND YOUTH

In 2013, Richmond City Commonwealth Attorney and YMCA Board Member, Michael Herring, connected the Y to the Mayor’s Youth Academy to facilitate Youth Supporting Youth, a program that This program is our provides restorative opportunity to listen.
