President’s Letter

“You’re never too old to learn,” is an adage frequently used to describe opportunities we all receive during life’s journey. As I studied this issue of YMCA Connect, I found myself reflecting upon the lessons I learn each day through my work at the Y. As you explore the following pages, you’ll meet people who have learned new things about themselves and others as a result of their involvement with the Y. In our cover story, “Commitments to Myself,” on page 8, you will hear about the experience of two runners who participated in the 2010 Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k. Unlike most, they trained with the Keep It Movin’ group of 22 homeless individuals who made strides toward healthy living, gaining confidence and demonstrating to themselves an ability to accomplish something they might have never thought possible. Two profiles displaying the Y’s commitment to youth development range from the Goochland Family YMCA to the North Richmond YMCA Community Center. “Making Preschool Possible,” on page 10, illustrates the opportunity for community leaders to learn about the power of a public/ private partnership while providing a nurturing environment for students. You’ll also read about four-year-old Tyrrell in “Seeds of Literacy,” on page 12. His mother, Stephanie, shares her experience learning new parenting skills while giving her son an educational advantage. Our commitment to social responsibility is most evident when we give back to our neighbors. Under the best of circumstances, it isn’t easy to establish residency in a new country. “Faith Despite Adversity,” on page 14, is the profile

of Awut Chan and the compassion she’s received from the staff and program participants at the Tuckahoe and Shady Grove Family YMCAs. In “That Go-to Role Model,” on page 16, Tiffany Patton reveals how her own childhood provided lessons that she now shares with others in her position as associate director of community development at the Chester Family YMCA. In addition to the feature articles above, you’ll find stories about the YMCA of Greater Richmond and what we learn each day. Don’t miss the News Update on page 6. When we learned that residents of western Chesterfield County expressed a need for YMCA programs and services, we responded in November by breaking ground on a new facility – the 16th YMCA branch that will serve the residents of our region. Please turn the page; you may learn something new about yourself. You’ll definitely discover some opportunities to learn about your neighbors or to give back to the community through the Y. Perhaps you’ll be able to teach something new to someone else! I wish you all the best in 2011.

news Volunteer appreciation

New gym underway

Chickahominy’s Surrogate Mother “See those plants over there?” asks June Nash Williams, “Members donated them, and they looked like they weren’t thriving; I sort of adopted them and take care of them.” June has a knack for adopting responsibilities at the Chickahominy Family YMCA and can be found assisting members most days of the week. “Anything you need, she’s there. She’s just been really wonderful,” says Volunteer Coordinator Barbara Wright. June is on the branch board of managers and after thirtyfive years teaching in the Richmond Public School System, she is still passionate about children. She volunteers in child watch, child care, water safety classes, and contributes to numerous branch projects and events. When she is not volunteering, June stays busy with her peers at the Y. “I do water aerobics and Silver Sneakers®. I like to come and socialize,” she says. June greets members in the front lobby and because of her readiness to help, is often mistaken for a paid staff member. She assists the older adults, helping them walk through the facility or on field trips. “She is an asset to have here,” says Barbara. Like the plants on the pool deck or the child engaged in pool lessons, the Chickahominy Family YMCA is fortunate to receive support from June Nash Williams.

As Hanover County residents celebrate the expansion and consolidation of the Patrick Henry Family YMCA, more improvement is underway. The gymnasium, which was not part of the recent expansion, has been fully funded by a gift received this fall. With a scheduled completion date in the summer of 2011, the gymnasium will become a reality much sooner than expected. “We were so happy about opening the new expansion, but had to accept that we did not have funds to include the gymnasium at this time. This gift is an unbelievable and wonderful surprise,” says Executive Director Tricia Hutnan. New community partnerships have arisen since the expansion, as many non-profits are making connections with the Y. Hutnan sees promise in these partnerships and notes, “The more outreach groups we can work with, the better for the community. This gymnasium will be the only public gym accessible to all residents in Hanover County.”

Swift Creek Family YMCA In response to requests from local residents and as a result of market research, the YMCA of Greater Richmond will begin construction on a 45,000 square foot facility in western Chesterfield County in late 2010. The site, located near the intersection of Hampton Park Drive and Otterdale Road, will meet community needs identified in a recent study by a national research organization. Program offerings for the new branch will include family-focused programs such as summer camp, soccer and creative arts programs. Adult interests identified will be met with health programming, wellness coaches and a variety of social and recreational services. The new Swift Creek Family YMCA is scheduled to open in late 2011.

YMCA Tritons swim coach, Caleb Miller, commands the pool deck at the Shady Grove and Tuckahoe Family YMCAs, where he trains children ages seven to eighteen to swim competitively. Miller grew up swimming at the Y in Lynchburg and began coaching the Tritons three years ago. His personal investment in the success of the Y teams has become visible. Miller’s coaching skills and his swimmers are gaining state and national recognition. This summer he coached an 11-12-year-old female Virginia Swimming Zone Team in Rockville, Maryland. This team consists of the top two swimmers from events throughout Virginia. They come together biannually to compete against other state and regional teams from across the country. Twelve-year-old Triton team member, Aiden Sullivan, qualified for the Virginia Swimming Zone Team, participating in three events: the 50- and 200-meter breaststroke and the 50 meter freestyle. Sydney Fisher, another Triton team member, earned a place at the YMCA Nationals meet where she competed in the 100-meter butterfly event and ranked an impressive 86th overall. Coach Miller set a high bar of excellence for the team this year and hopes to send two more swimmers to the YMCA Nationals meet this summer.

Commitments to myself Homeless runners find lasting benefits from YMCA training team The first day of training last January was frigid, yet Rosie Boswell nearly fainted from heat exhaustion. She had worn a down coat on her first run - an amateur mistake. Like Boswell, most Keep It Movin’ team members were overdressed and inexperienced runners. They were also homeless, but shared a common goal with thousands of other Richmonders: to train over 12 weeks and complete the Monument Avenue 10k. The Downtown YMCA, where they met for training, extended Keep It Movin’ the same benefits as the other YMCA 10k Training Teams: a ten-visit pass to help them reach their goal. “I got to making a commitment to myself, and I haven’t been making commitments or good choices in my life. And this time I said ‘I’m going to push it; this time I’m going to do it’,” says Boswell. She did complete the race, as did all twenty-two members of the team, except one who had broken his ankle just before the race. “One of the biggest problems with people that come in here is the inability to commit,” says Freedom House Program Director Ken Roth. “But our residents stuck with [the training team], and I was very glad to see that,” he adds. About half of the Keep It Movin’ 10k team members resided at Freedom House. They describe the shelter as a family, a great brotherhood and sisterhood. However, the shelter has strict regulations that help homeless people regain control of their lives. Residents must keep a job, meet weekly with a case worker, and may stay no longer than one year. If needed, they also must visit a therapist weekly and take medication as prescribed. “It’s not a place to lay out and do nothing,” cautions resident and team member Bryan Armes. He has a new sense of self after his experience with the team. “I’ve struggled with self-esteem my whole life,” he says, “and the biggest thing I learned from the training team was if I set my mind to doing something, now I can do it.” Keep It Movin’ founder and head coach Dan Blankenship leads all YMCA 10k Training Teams for Sports Backers and has recently procured non-profit status for Keep It Movin’. He noticed a change in team members over the course of the program. “What we’ve found is that by running, increasing physical activity, and setting a goal, it inspires 8

you to do even more things. It gives you better confidence. There were people who felt much better about going for an interview and they had more energy than they had before; they were taking more risks,” he says. Dee Shackford, who also coached the team with her husband Bob, noticed a change in her perception of the homeless. “Initially, I was cautionary about crossing the line or asking the wrong question. I didn’t want them to think I was in their business, but I didn’t want them to think I didn’t care. What I learned was they’re just ordinary human beings like me that unfortunately have circumstances different than mine. They’re not any different than me, than Dan or anyone.” Shackford’s sentiments are shared by the other

coaches and volunteers. “Quite frankly, I probably got just as much out of the program, or more, as they did. It just brought me back to being human again,” says Blankenship. In 2011, Keep It Movin’ plans on targeting other populations of people without the means to join a running team, such as disadvantaged youth. “It’s for anybody who has a specific need. If you want to run, you can come out and join us,” says Shackford. They plan on recruiting the homeless to join them for a YMCA 10k Training Team again this spring, and expect even more will participate. Hit with 3.6 million dollars in budget cuts last spring, the Goochland County School System was forced to eliminate programs. The Tender Tots preschool program for three and four year-olds was vulnerable as enrollment had slipped over the years to just nine students. “One of the reasons I believe that was happening was because it was only a half-day program,” explains Jan Kenney, program director at the Goochland Family YMCA. After the county officially cut the program, Kenney contacted Dr. Linda Underwood, Goochland County School Superintendent, and asked how the Y could help. “This definitely aligned with our mission and there was a clear need. If we didn’t step in, then the need would not have been met and a lot of children and parents would have suffered,” says Kenney. The superintendent was eager to partner with the Y, and this fall, a licensed, YMCA pre-school program was born in Goochland County. “What I recommended, in order for the program to be effective, was to offer some options: for it to be a full-day and halfday program as well as before school,” says Kenney. Her recommendations proved to be good guidance. The YMCA Tender Tots program enrollment has more than doubled since the county ran the program last spring. “Providing a safe and nurturing climate is our number one goal; if you provide that, everything else will fall into place,” says Kenney. So far, she is correct, thanks to the partnership with the county. The program has dedicated space in the Goochland County Specialty Education Center. Support from community donors has also been promising. Tender Tot parents Shannon and Tommy Allen, gave $8,000 at the inception of the program. “This goes to show you that the public and the private sectors can come together to solve a community need. We truly needed an academic preschool-age program right here in Goochland County, and it is a big success,” reports Jay Shively, executive director at the Goochland Family YMCA.

Seeds of literacy Stephanie Baccus’s four-year-old son Tyrrell struggled with pre-reading skills and wasn’t responding to her traditional teaching methods. In response, Mrs. Baccus enrolled the family, including Tyrrell and his older brother Russell, in the North Richmond Community Center YMCA Seeds of Literacy program. “I wanted to see if I could learn more as a parent,” Mrs. Baccus said. Odds are stacked against the families in the program, all of whom live in a concentrated center of poverty. However, Seeds of Literacy aims to provide parents like Stephanie Baccus with educational tools to help their children succeed. The Baccus Family attends monthly workshops during the school year. In addition to hands-on literacy aids, a healthy dinner is part of the workshop. “The parents gain knowledge from the workshops and have a clearer understanding of why increasing their child’s literacy is important,” explains Associate Child Care Director Derek Stevens, who leads the Seeds of Literacy program. Derek and other education professionals guide parents through workshops such as motivating kids to read, using cooking as a learning tool and celebrating national poetry month. Parents leave the classes with suggestions and prompts of how to encourage literacy at home. “A new skill that they taught me was to read with them; to let them read the story even though they don’t have all the words,” says Baccus. She explains how she now lets Tyrrell hear her pronounce the words and look at the pictures before they begin reading. Last school year, the program participants travelled as a group to Theatre IV to experience Peter Pan, visited Maymont Garden and the Nature Center and enjoyed an Italian meal together at a local restaurant. The success of the program has not gone unnoticed. This fall, the Seeds of Literacy Program received the prestigious Annie E. Casey Foundation Family Strengthening Grant. The award will fund workshop facilitators, field trips, healthy dinners, books and take-home materials for the parents. This was one of only five YMCA programs across the country to be selected by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The most significant recognition from the program, however, is evident when parents like Stephanie Baccus say, “When my five-year-old started kindergarten this year, he was ready.”

Social Responsibility

“They were killed like cows,” Awut Chan said with tears in her eyes. Originally from wartorn Sudan, Awut was tied to a tree and left for dead after witnessing the murder of her parents. She was freed after seven days. Her family suffered constant harassment, midnight raids and beatings. She received asylum in America thanks to the efforts of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. But her time here has not been easy. She works on the janitorial staff at the Tuckahoe Family YMCA and raises her nine children alone. When the Department of Social Services stopped providing funding for child care, Awut was faced with the possibility of losing her house in order to take care of her three youngest children. Knowing the Shady Grove Family YMCA provides on-site child care at her children’s school, Awut’s supervisor, Flossi Beal, worked immediately to enroll them. Thanks to the YMCA’s financial assistance program, Awut can work and her children are safe after school. “I see God in all people at the YMCA. The YMCA is my family, the people here are my brothers and sisters,” says Awut. Despite all she has been through, she is always happy, and can often be heard singing cultural songs as she cleans the Y’s facilities. “If you trust in God, He provides. God has brought me to the YMCA.”

Social Responsibility

That go-to role model “I was raised by my grandmother and had an upbringing similar to these kids. My mother was not always present and my father was completely absent from my household,” says Tiffany Patton, associate director of community development at the Chester Family YMCA. Patton leads the Teen L.I.N.C. (Learning Interactively in Neighborhoods and Communities) and Kidz Club programs at the Colonial Ridge community center. This center serves Colonial Ridge and Bermuda Run, two Section 8, government-subsidized housing developments in Colonial Heights. It is a beacon of opportunity in a neighborhood permeated by poverty. The odds are stacked against children who are often left to fend for themselves and, many times, care for their younger siblings. YMCA programs at the community center offer an alternative for these kids. “Here you have someone who can sit down and help you and give you some personalized attention – someone to help you with your homework and talk about your day and school,” explains Patton. Students in the Bermuda Run and Colonial Ridge developments attend Marguerite Christian Elementary School, where they benefit from the Y’s licensed after-school care. Although there were programs for elementary school students, there was no outlet when students advanced to middle and high school. The Y filled this need, under the guidance of Patton and Membership Director Marco Callender, by introducing programs and events at the community center. “We want to keep kids off the streets after school, when mom’s not home from work, where you can have structure and a safe place to be after school,” says Patton. A grant from the Cameron Foundation funds the YMCA after-school programs and special teen events. Students enrolled in Teen L.I.N.C. will benefit from homework assistance, participate in team building, and engage in service learning projects within the community. Monthly teen nights offer opportunities to have fun in a safe environment, an attractive alternative to risky, unsupervised activities. The Cameron Foundation grant also supports a quarterly breakfast for middle and high school residents, which will address teen issues and nurture character development. Patton knows firsthand that nurturing a sense of self-worth in teens is just as important as instilling knowledge in them. “Just having someone show a little more interest in me when my mom wasn’t able or my grandmother was working – those people kept me out of trouble,” she says. “I want to be that person in someone else’s life to give them that experience, that chance, that outlet. I want to be that go-to role model they relate to.”

Festive Holiday Salad In the U.S., pomegranate season typically runs from October to January. This Mediterranean fruit is sweet, tart, juicy, delicious, and filled with anti-oxidants. Pomegranate seeds add a ruby-like sparkle to any holiday salad. Sprinkle on top of assorted mixed greens, add a few walnuts, some crumbled feta cheese and serve with a light dressing of high quality olive oil and lemon juice. Make enough for leftovers to take to work with some pita bread. Pomegranate juice makes a healthy non-alcoholic holiday beverage when mixed with ginger ale or seltzer and a wedge of lime.

Traditional Method for Opening Pomegranate: • Use caution as pomegranate juice can stain your clothes! • When removing the seeds from a pomegranate, hold the fruit away from you in a deep bowl so the juices don’t splash your clothes. • Cut the crown end off a pomegranate, removing with it some of the white pith. • Lightly score the skin in quarters, from the stem to the crown end. • Firmly yet gently break the sections apart, following the score lines. • Bend back the skin and gently pop the seed clusters into a bowl; remove any pith.

making a difference In the last decade, tens of thousands of donors have contributed millions of dollars to keep the Y open to all through the Planting Seeds of Hope Annual Support Campaign. Children have been safe in our after-school care rather than going home to an empty house. Teens learned about teamwork and personal discipline through sports and community service. Adults caught in generational poverty or newly unemployed stayed healthy at the Y thanks to these generous donations. Older adults grew younger as they worked out, took field trips or caught up with friends over coffee. Generous donors have made more than 4,100 gifts to put us on track to reach our goal of $2.88 million dollars in 2010. Thank you to everyone who helped a neighbor in need through Planting Seeds of Hope. To better reflect our cause, the annual giving campaign name will be changed to Strengthening Communities Fund in 2011. We are excited that Raymond E. Moore will be the campaign chairman. The names and faces have changed but the mission remains the same, as does the need for individuals who want to make a difference in another’s life.
