The YMCA of Greater Richmond has supported the Richmond region for more than 155 years by fulfilling our mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Our mission is unchanged. You may have recently heard that the Y has launched a national brand revitalization. After a nation-wide study to understand what our members and the public knew about our charitable cause, the YMCA of the USA determined that a tremendous opportunity lay before us. By embracing our mission and more clearly focusing on our strengths, the Y can better convey its role as one of the largest charitable organizations in the country. Our brand revitalization begins with a simple promise: to strengthen the foundation of this community. We will do this, as we always have, but with three specific areas of focus – youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. In this issue of Y Connect you will see these three new areas of focus “come alive.” FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT - Nurturing the potential of every child and teen The YMCA Model General Assembly, which you will read about on page 10, is a shining example of the opportunities that youth have in Y programs to grow, learn responsibility and aspire to be a future community leader. On page 12, you will meet a burgeoning pianist and participant in our arts programs at the Shady Grove Family YMCA and learn how the Y provides resources for arts education to combat its continued decline in many school systems.

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILTY – Giving back and providing support to our neighbors We can’t do it alone. It takes thousands of volunteers and collaborations with hundreds of community organizations to deliver on our promise. On page 14, learn about our partnership with the Peter Paul Development Center which meets the needs of youth through Y programs in their own neighborhood. To make our revitalization complete, we are adopting a new logo. It is very exciting that, for the first time in 43 years, the YMCA letters are incorporated into an updated, colorful and dynamic mark that represents the Y. An array of five color combinations are being used to reflect the vibrancy of the Y’s programs, services and members. In the coming weeks you will see the logo appearing in our branches, beginning first with our staff uniforms. I invite you to stop and speak with any member of the staff and engage her or him in a conversation about why she or he is wearing a particular color logo and what it means.

Effective October, all YMCA of Greater Richmond branch locations will feature ActivTrax, a revolutionary, web-based training tool that creates customized workouts and nutrition plans based on your goals, strength and fitness experience. After an initial orientation with your Y’s wellness staff, you will be able to access your account at a kiosk located at your Y or from any device with an internet connection! Speak to your Y’s wellness director or visit the Y’s website to learn more.

Southside Virginia Family YMCA

The Southside Virginia Family YMCA’s renovations promise a much richer member experience. Men’s and women’s locker rooms will be completely renovated to feature all new lockers, flooring, countertops, showers and bathrooms. An additional family locker room will be included featuring private changing rooms and bathing areas for parents with children and older adults and their caregivers. Children will find a more stimulating environment thanks to an expanded Child Watch room. Additionally, a brand new sauna and steam room will be located on the pool deck and accessible to all. Features such as a light-reflecting roof with increased insulation, high efficiency air conditioning and energy efficient lighting have been incorporated to reduce the Y’s environmental impact. Renovations are expected to be completed before the end of the year.

Patrick Henry Family YMCA

The grand opening of the expanded and consolidated Patrick Henry Family YMCA is scheduled for October 22! The brand new wellness facility opened August 5, and members found an environment incomparable to the old storefront wellness center. A second entrance leads to a social area in front of the two new youth centers, which double the Y’s child care and camp capacity while creating an environment conducive to children of all ages. Walk across the hall into the intergenerational room and you will find an expansive area where older adults can socialize and teens have a safe, stimulating environment. Pass the new bathrooms and take the elevator or stairs to the second floor where you will find state of the art exercise rooms and a breathtaking wellness center with a functional layout conducive to the health and wellness goals of the entire community. The entire addition creates an aura of openness thanks to walls of windows that allow for natural lighting and reduced energy costs. Additional environmental considerations include a light reflecting roof, paperless hand dryers, low-to-no volatile organic compound (VOC) paint and carpet and energy saving lights. volunteer appreciation It Takes a Village…to Build a Y “This campaign isn’t about buildings. We build because of the work that goes on within our walls. This is about kids and families here in Ashland and Hanover County,” said Art McKinney at the groundbreaking for the expanded and consolidated Patrick Henry Family YMCA. Art and his wife Jerry co-chaired the Y’s capital campaign, but they didn’t do it alone. A group of dedicated volunteers gave themselves completely to ensure Hanover has the Y it deserves. What was their reason for investing their time, talent and treasure? Ask any one of them, and the answer is the same: Because the Y is open to all, dedicated to the needs of the community’s children, families and elderly. Jane and Rob Wait provided support to the Y throughout its growth. “Personally, the Y is a place to stay healthy. But, if you look a little deeper, it’s not hard to see the benefit to the community,” says Rob. Dody Tribble chaired the community phase of the fundraising campaign, rallying neighbors and friends, and providing hard hat tours of the construction to potential donors or anyone else who was interested. “Every member gives back to the Y. It could be their perspective on life, or the money from their membership. They may not realize it, but their involvement supports the community,” says Dody.

“I give to the Y because I admire those who receive its assistance,” says Sharon Coleman. “We all want what’s best for our families, and the fact that the Y turns no one away because of inability to pay creates a stronger community.” Anne Woodward agrees. “Where else can you go where every socioeconomic class is represented, but unidentifiable?” says Anne. “The Y increases Hanover’s quality of life. Even businesses realize this when deciding to locate here.” One thing all of Patrick Henry Family YMCA’s volunteers agree on is that none of this would have been possible without the leadership of Executive Director Tricia Hutnan. “Our volunteers and the entire community own this Y and its future,” says Tricia.

Ingredients 1 cup canned chickpeas (garbanzo beans) rinsed and drained 1 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1/2 cup coarsely chopped carrot 1 teaspoon Garam Masala 1 teaspoon amchur powder 1 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teasppon ground red pepper 1 jalapeno, seeded and quartered 2 pounds peeled red potatoes, cut into 2-inch pieces 1/4 cup coarsely chopped red onion 1 cup dry breadcrumbs 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 2/3 cups spinach 4 (6-inch) whole-grain pitas, cut in half 8 red onion slices

Preparation 1. Combine first 9 ingredients in a food processor; process until finely chopped. 2. Place potatoes in a large saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a boil; cook 13 minutes. Add onion and cook for 2 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Drain; cool 10 minutes. Place potato mixture in a large bowl, mash with potato masher or fork. Stir in chickpea mixture and breadcrumbs; cover and chill eight hours or overnight.

3. Divide potato mixture into eight equal portions, shaping each portion into a 1/2-inch-thick patty (about 2/3 cup mixture). Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook five minutes on each side or until browned and heated through. Place 1/3 cup spinach and 1 patty in each pita half. Top with one onion slice.

The average adult cannot explain the exact process by which legislation is created. But YMCA Virginia Model General Assembly (VMGA) participants like Kyle Panas, a rising senior in Goochland County, and Christian Tiller, a rising senior at Randolph Macon College, have lived it. VMGA is a program run by the Virginia YMCA designed to introduce high school students to the legislative process of Virginia. Each club or school group that participates proposes at least one bill, often after discussions with actual state legislators. Participants can assume the role of senator, delegate, officer, lobbyist, reporter, page, or executive representative. Bills are developed in the participant’s club or school. In April, groups from across the state come together at the Capitol Building in Richmond to debate their proposed legislation before committees and on the floors of the House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia. If passed, the bill goes on to the elected Governor, who can either approve or veto the legislation. “You are a senator or a delegate for a few days. You walk around in a suit, you debate on the floor, you cast votes in committee and on the floor, you talk to the governor and explain your bill to him (or her). It’s cool to immerse yourself in that environment,” says Kyle, who participated through the Goochland Family YMCA’s Leaders’ Club. “You really get out of it what you put into it,” says Christian, who helped found the Midlothian YMCA Leaders’ Club and participated in VMGA as the president of Trinity Episcopal School’s Youth In Government program. “You learn by doing. It’s a totally different experience than learning government by reading a text book.” Midlothian Family YMCA Teen Director Jason Christiansen is always amazed by his participants’ commitment to the program. “They have fun but really take it seriously,” says Jason. “Their abilities as public speakers improve tremendously as they become more confident in their roles.” YMCA Leaders’ Clubs at the Goochland, Midlothian, Powhatan, Shady Grove and Tuckahoe Family YMCAs participate in the VMGA; it is one of many Y programs that develop caring, responsible and civic-minded young adults. During times of economic turmoil, arts and humanities programs are often the first things to get cut at national, state and local levels. But are these programs really luxuries that we can do without? Absolutely not. Julie Zubris began teaching piano and guitar lessons at the Shady Grove Family YMCA three years ago; Ankith Laichetty was her first student. Ankith is 11 years old and already is quite the pianist. When asked what he struggles with most, Ankith humbly responds, “Playing softly and melodiously. And my six-eight time.” His mom, Madhavi, smiles with pride as her son explains his love for science and animals of all kinds. Ankith is a very bright kid. “I love art, but I’m no musician,” Madhavi explains. “I encourage him, but he doesn’t need me to push him to practice.” Madhavi goes on to explain that she knows how technical piano is and what a mental workout it can be. She knows it helps with Ankith’s personal development and success in school. A recent report by the Center for Arts Education found a strong correlation between high school graduation rates and arts education in New York City. Additionally, successful scientists and inventors are artistic people. Much of our modern technology stems from innovations made by artists. Almost all Nobel laureates in the sciences actively engage in arts. The Y strives to incorporate arts and humanities in all of its child care and camp programs and acknowledges how this contributes to youth development. “I’ve had my students paint still life while listening to Beethoven, perform marionette plays and watch performances at Theatre IV. They might not be interested at first, but, eventually, their imagination shines through,” says Shady Grove Family YMCA Arts Instructor Sabrina Morgan. In addition to the arts and humanities incorporated in child care and camp, the Y offers many other programs including pottery, painting, filmmaking, music and voice lessons and dance for all ages. A man was helping his neighbor who had lost his keys. After half an hour of fruitless searching under a street light, the man asked his neighbor, “Are you sure you lost your keys here?” “No,” his neighbor replied. “I lost them closer to my home but the light is so much brighter here.” When the Downtown YMCA looks for youth who are in danger of being lost, it does not limit its search within the well-lit confines of its walls. It goes where the youth are. That’s the smart and socially responsible thing to do. It is also why the Y is in Richmond’s East End. The East End is a tough place in which to grow up. Neighborhoods there are scarred by boarded-up houses; lawns are dusty, dry and devoid of flowers. Approximately 40 percent of families live below the poverty level; 46 percent of families are headed by a single parent. Almost one half of adults over the age of 25 do not have a high school diploma. The East End is home to four of the city’s largest housing projects. The average annual income for families living in these communities is less than $10,000. Living in this high concentration of poverty are 4,000 school-age children. How can these children succeed? Only with help from organizations that value helping neighbors in need. That’s why the Downtown Y, with grant support from Bon Secours, provides a full-time staff person to complement the work of the Peter Paul Development Center, a community center sitting squarely in the middle of the four housing projects. The Reverend Lynne E. Washington, Executive Director of the center, says, “We operate on a whole child model. Our primary work here is to dig deep into academics. We partner with others who can do things we don’t have the staff or expertise to do. And one of those things is helping children be active.” That’s where the Y comes in. Dionne Wheeler, the Downtown Y’s Youth Sports Director, knows that basketball is the sport of choice for young boys in the inner city. Ms. Wheeler introduces them to such non-traditional inner city sports as volleyball, lacrosse, tennis, soccer, golf, and swimming.

Children learn about Chinese history during Chinese Camp at the Peter Paul Development Center

When children learn to swim, self-esteem rises. Some children overcome deep-seated fear of the water. Others improve their swim stroke technique with members of the Poseidon swim team. In the East End, learning to swim at a public pool is not an option. Learning to be safe in and around water is vital for African American children; they have the highest rate of drowning of any ethnic group. One intriguing sports offering was squash. The Virginia Squash Association, including a world-ranked player, taught these children the fundamentals of this venerable game in the Downtown Y’s racquetball courts. At their graduation, one child said, “I thought squash was a vegetable. Now I know it is a great game. Thank you for teaching me how to play.” Beyond physical activities, Ms. Wheeler helps children learn about African American history and takes them on field trips. “When we went to the Pocahontas

16

Slave Museum, children held the heavy shackles that bound human beings who looked like them.” Thanks to the Y’s commitment to work with the Peter Paul Development Center, education and active, healthy lifestyles will set children free. Ms. Wheeler also assists a nutritionist from Bon Secours to teach the basics of healthy nutrition. In a part of the city where fresh fruits and vegetables are tough to find, healthy food choices are difficult to make. These varied activities embody the Y’s commitment to nurture spirit, mind and body. Ms Wheeler notes, “The children learn that when we push each other to do our best, we can put it all together and come up with something very powerful.” That’s true of the partnership between Peter Paul, Bon Secours and the Y. Each uses its particular strengths and gifts to help children develop their potential and learn to make choices that lead to a healthy lifestyle.

Burdy Mahoney swims at the Manchester Family YMCA

Burdy Mahoney has spent many years as the member of a unique club – yes she’s an elite athlete and fiercely competitive swimmer – but it’s been her membership at the Y that has enabled the pursuit of her fitness passion. As a teenager in New York State, Burdy started her lifelong journey with the Y as a competitive swimmer where she participated on the swim team and swam competitively throughout high school. “A corporate benefit of my first job after college was a membership to the Y in Port Chester, NY. I trained there with coworkers. The Y was right across the street from our office, so it was an easy escape for a mental and physical ‘fix’.” That phase of her swimming avocation included more than 20 years with US Masters Swimming before she moved to Virginia and turned her attention to training for open water events at a Virginia Beach YMCA. When she relocated to Richmond in 1991, Burdy fed her aquatic passion as a member at the Tuckahoe Family YMCA followed by a membership at the Elizabeth Randolph Lewis

Powhatan YMCA after moving to Powhatan. When her first child was born in 2000, she strayed from her training regimen. Then, after surgery to remove a tumor from her spinal canal in 2005, she joined the Manchester Family YMCA in 2006, the day after Labor Day. Much of Burdy’s inspiration now comes from those who surround her in the pool. “Fellow swimmers have always been very encouraging to me. I am constantly amazed by the dedication of those swimmers who overcome physical disabilities to persevere in the pool. The nurturing experiences that I’ve had at the Y help me to remember to take every opportunity to tell my poolmates ‘keep up the good work,’” she says. All the Y locations Burdy has utilized are more than buildings with swimming pools. “I realize that the Y itself is a common thread that holds together the pieces of my lifelong fitness fabric. When I enter a YMCA – whether it’s for the 1st time or the 1000th time – there is a certain familiarity and comfort in knowing that you are welcomed home.”

Retired for more than 11 years, Jack Fyock has a clear idea of what retirement looks like for him and his wife. When they relocated to the Richmond area from Massachusetts about five years ago, meeting people was at the top of their list; their goal was met at the Chickahominy Family YMCA. The Y is one avenue that enabled Jack and his wife to make connections in the Sandston community. “The Y is just a terrific place,” Jack says. “It’s small in size, but with a great spirit. The staff do an amazing job of putting as much programming as possible into an amazingly small space. I hope it will always retain its open, welcoming atmosphere.” Jack’s initial experience is similar to many- an understanding of the cross-generational impact of the Y’s programs. The Y is a multi-layered institution and he is passionate about child care, summer camp for youth and charitable donations needed to support these activities. His understanding of these elements of mission delivery recently led him to join the branch’s Board of Managers. Jack is the embodiment of an Active Adult. With the branch’s leadership, he and a group of seniors developed the Senior Hot Spot – a gathering place to meet, play games such as Wii Fit and space to serve as a clearing house for goings-on that are of interest to seniors in Western Henrico County. “I’m in the best shape of my adult life!” seventy-five year old Jack is quick to say. His hope is to increase the number of active older members in group exercise courses by becoming a certified group exercise instructor himself. When you see Jack during his frequent visits to the YMCA, he may be there to participate in one of the many existing group exercise classes – Body Sculpting, Pilates on a Ball or even Absolutely Abs! While sharing his own YMCA experience Jack says, “Being involved at the YMCA will open opportunities for you to be engaged in very satisfying activities whether it’s for your personal, physical or mental health. Belonging to the YMCA will open new vistas for anyone who is interested.”

Our adult swim lesson participants are grouped by ability to ensure fundamental swimming techniques are mastered before advancing to more difficult classes. Branches may offer variations of the program, incorporating different elements under the same theme. Lifeguard Certification – Red Cross CH, CK, DT, GO, MD, PH, PO, TK This program allows individuals to become certified lifeguards. It includes lifeguard, first aid and CPR/AED certification. Participants must be able to swim 300 yards continuously including 100 yards breaststroke and 100 freestyle or breaststroke. Lifeguard Certification – YMCA MD, PH Participants must be 16 years or older prior to course start date. Parental consent is required for participants under 18 years old. Certifications in CPR for the professional rescuer, AED, standard first aid and oxygen administration must be held prior to the start date. Participants must pass a swimming test including a long, shallow front dive then swim 500 yards including 100 yards each of sidestroke, front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke kick with one arm forward, and inverted breaststroke kick with arms on the stomach; tread water for at least two minutes with legs only; and surface-dive head-first and feet-first in eight to 10 feet of water and swim underwater for 15 feet. Masters Swimming DT, MD, PH, SG, TK This program for ages 14 and up is geared toward the individual who wants to improve endurance, technique and learn new strokes. Beginner, intermediate and advanced workouts available. This is a great training program for triathletes.

USS Long Course Swim Team SG, TK We offer a year-round, progressive swim team program that involves a higher level of competition and a more advanced workout schedule. This is a larger commitment on the swimmer and parents when compared to our swim league. This program involves travel swim meets out of the area as well as several local United States Swimming (USS) meets.

Youth Swim Lessons CH, CK, DT, GO, MD, NR, PH, PO, SG, SS, TK Beginners focus on developing freestyle and proper rotary breathing, while advanced levels focus on other skills such as backstroke. Middle School Enrichment Programs GO GMAC (Goochland Middle Action Challenge) is an after-school enrichment program for middle school-aged youth. Participants meet three times a week (twice at their school and once at the YMCA) for structured recreational activities and academic assistance. Leaders’ Club CH, CK, DT, GO, MD, NR, PH, PO, SG, TK YMCA Leaders’ Club provides teens ages 13-18 with knowledge, training, communication skills and valuable team-building experience through volunteering in YMCA programs and the community. Leaders’ Club trains teens to better serve their community and YMCA as they encourage each other to make a positive impact for present and future generations. Qualifying leaders may participate in Blue Ridge Leaders’ School, a week-long school held in June that is run by the South Field YMCAs with a main focus on fitness and leadership development. Metro Teen DT Metro Teens practice today the skills they need to become tomorrow’s leaders. Through hands-on activities, group projects and guest speakers, teens learn about the issues that affect their community and discuss youth-oriented solutions. Teen Bible Study SG, TK Teen Bible Study is a free program that offers participants opportunities to join in Christian fellowship with other teens and to delve into God’s word. Teens in Action MD, TK The mission of the Teens in Action club is to provide volunteer and social opportunities for teens in the YMCA while developing leadership skills in a positive atmosphere that fosters a sense of belonging and encouragement. Teens will be required to attend a volunteer workshop. Club members are also asked to participate in essential monthly meetings. Wilderness Program GO Youth build courage, confidence and strength of character through participation in outdoor adventure activities. Activities include but are not limited to mountain biking, kayaking, rock climbing, backpacking and skiing. Program is offered to teens ages 13-18 and families with children ages 8-12. Y Guides CT, PH, SG, TK The Y-Guides, Y-Princesses and Y-Papoose programs are unique opportunities for fathers to spend uninterrupted time with their children. The purpose of the programs is to strengthen families. Fathers, sons and daughters participate in fun and educational activities that help them grow closer together. Tireless workers, they crisscrossed the County of Hanover, inviting other individuals to build an expanded and renovated Y facility to serve more children and families. Their major gift and their commitment to the cause were catalysts for the success of the campaign. The Y is blessed to have generous corporate partners whose commitment to social responsibility helps promote youth development and healthy living. Recent awards include: • $50,000 from Altria Companies Employee Community Fund to support youth development along the Route 1 corridor, especially through after-school child care. • $30,000 from Genworth to promote healthy living among older adults and expand work with teens. • $24,000 from HCA to engage more children and adults in programs that improve health. • $10,000 from UPS to support after-school child care. 32
