Autobiography

I was born and raised in a metro city, Beijing, China. It is a developed, high density place that combines history culture and modern creativity together. When I was a child, my mom often took me to her work place and let me wonder and read books. It was at art and design college library. From that time, I was attracted to these areas and interested in the process of design. When I studied advertisement major in college, I was particularly interested in interaction advertisement because it combined mass media and interior design. Working on these projects, I felt like I was paying more attention to the details of life, and using my design to create a better life for people. After graduation, I spent a year working at different jobs, getting different work experience, but slowly I realized what I really wanted to do is design. One of the jobs I had was working at a beautifully designed hotel. This hotel was designed by Kengo Kuma, who is a famous architect/ designer. Working there, I was inspired by his work, and decided to study interior design. I also knew that I wanted a broad, international approach to the field and learned I could get that in the Academy’s program.

Statement of Professional Goals

I am interested in hospitality design, and I will search for internship work in design companies after my midpoint to get some work experience. After graduation, I hope to work in the U.S. for a period, so I can absorb all kinds of design ideas and get deeper into the design process. After that, I will go back to Beijing, my hometown. There I hope to work in a large interior design company or teach design at the college level. In China, it is common for many designers both teach and design on their own or for other companies. I am prepared to develop my professional Interior design skills during my next one and half years and with my thesis project at AAU. I hope to achieve my future career goals. For instance, one of these is to focus on incorporating elements of my thesis design concept and its Chinese culture with modern western concepts such as sustainability, low levels of pollution, and high technology materials. These are new ideas that can provide a better quality of life for people. I will also use this time to find out more about the education methodology of design, which will help me to achieve my educational goal of working at design colleges in Beijing. 3

Abstract

NowadaysďźŒChinese urbanization promotes a growing Chinese housing market. More and more Chinese people want to buy homes in the cities and furnish them before they move in. This will involve painting and furnishing; however, the retail products vary in terms of quality and eco-friendliness. Many low quality products cause health problems, such as cornea and nasal mucosa stimulation, allergies, leukemia, and other cancers. Therefore, I would like to bring eco-friendly furnishings to Beijing. But selling eco products is not my only goal. The site I chose is in close proximity to six universities, most of which have design departments. I envision having interactions with these design students. I would like to teach design students and designers about sustainable concept, such as sustainability, durability, using nontoxic materials for their design, use and using recyclable products. I would like to provide a platform to show their design products. I would like to combine these retail and education functions for my thesis project.

Design Concept

Wu Xing is known as the Chinese five elements and their interaction with each other. These five elements are Metal (金 jīn), Water (水 shuǐ), Wood (木 mù), Fire (火 huǒ), and Earth (土 tǔ). Wu Xing comprises traditional Chinese attitudes and sustains the traditional world view. It is understood that these five elements are generated and inhibited by and yet are in conflict with one another. They are not static, and they are constantly moving and changing. Wu Xing has a counterpart in Western culture-- the classical elements of air, water, fire and earth in Greek Hellenic physics. Old Chinese people believe that the five elements are the basic materials allowing people to live, and the universe to operate. They not only effect a person’s fate, but also keep the universe in movement. Wu Xing emphasizes overall concepts, and describes an object’s structure, alteration, and relationship to others. People like to use these five elements to understand Feng Shui, to decorate their homes, and to secure wealth and their personal well-being. These five elements also have a conceptual scheme that many traditional Chinese fields use to explain natural phenomena, from directions to seasons, and from materials to the properties of medicinal drugs.

For my project, the eco home furnishing complex design, I would like to use these five elements, and their rebirth relationships to design all of spaces. I would like to combine this old rebirth concept with contemporary sustainability and up cycling concept to design my project. I’d like to let people get a visual experience and modern sustainable knowledge from my showroom and other spaces. 6

Beijing IKEA Home furnishing

Precedent Studies

IKEA is a big scale home furnishing retail store, which sells ready-to-assemble furniture, appliances, and home accessories. IKEA in Beijing is a large scale home furnishing retail in 59 Futong E St Chaoyang, Beijing. The building has 43,000 square meters (462,848 square feet). The average amount spent by each customer is 698 RMB ($120). The open hours are from 9:30 am to 23:00 pm.

10

Beijing IKEA Home furnishing retail building is comprised of five levels. The underground two levels are parking space; the first floor is entrance, with a snack shop, a children playing area and customer service areas; the second floor is a furnishing displaying area; the third floor is a restaurant, and furniture layout areas. IKEA is the first furnishing retailer that offers customers an ‘in home’ experience, in China. When customers shop in IKEA, they can imagine these designed interiors in their own home. People can sit in the living room or even take a nap in the bedroom. Based on Chinese customer’s interest, IKEA designed a large scale restaurant, which approximate 1800 square meters (19,375 square feet), and serves both popular Chinese and Western food. Half of all customers visit IKEA to take advantage of the restaurant with their family or friends. Most customers spend more than one hour in the restaurant.

This case study is very similar to my project, the home furnishing complex. I learned the specific information like the function-performance, circulation, and their relationship among each other. For my project, I will add similar function space and similar scale for my restaurant, showrooms, shops, and a customer service office based on this case study. 11

798 Art District, Beijing

798 Art District is often called the 798 Art Zone or Factory 798. It is an upcoming, high-level cultural, artistic and commercial activities center in the Dashanzi district of Beijing. This site used to be state-owned factories, which originally produced electronics. After they were abandoned 20 years, some artists came and built their art studios in this place during 2002. Right now, 798 re-mark the factory spaces, and gradually developing them into design firms, galleries, artists’ studios, creative offices, and restaurants. Many design students and travelers often take full advantage in 798. They visit and learn new art and design concept from galleries, artists’ studios and creative stores. Some students have a corporate with galleries and stores. The students’ design products are displayed in the galleries and sold in the creative stores. 12

From this case study, I know why 798 attracts so many students, especially art and design majors students take advantage here. It provides a comprehensive art and design space for students and artists. It provides a performance platform to let people show their art work together, and it also combines commercial function to let designers sell their design products. The distance from 798 to my project is 5 miles, and is a 15 min if drive in a car. However, most universities and art and design collages are not near 798 Art District. Students often take 1 hour from their school to 798. My projects site have more than 5 universities and art collages’. These art and design students can walk to my project with 15 min. 13

Bei restaurant Beijing Bei is a restaurant in the Opposite House in Beijing. It is based upon Northern Asian cuisine. Designers provide a very modern décor. Striking a unique balance between old and new, and this dining room really brings you the most luxurious elements in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. The concept of this restaurant is ‘forest and clearing’, where a sense of enclosure is achieved by screens made out of dark wood, which surrounds the dining area. The restaurant is enclosed by a wooden ‘trees’ screen. Passing through these screen one enters a clearing, defining the open public dining area of the restaurant. The low ambient ceiling down lighting provides the general mood in contrast with the sparkles of the abstracted bird lights and bird cages above. A sushi bar takes center stage in this dining room and a large mirror behind the chef’s aisle allows the patrons sitting at the bar to celebrate the art of the cuisine by viewing food preparation and at the same time brings depth to a very compressed space. The concrete with a purple wall at the back of the bar area, provides not only a focal point visually but a sense of theatre and drama, which is often the attraction of fine dining for the patrons.

For this case study, I learned how to use simple materials to build a drama, and a modern, new Asian interior space. I also learned how to use traditional Chinese element to design a modern restaurant. It let me understand what means by ‘simple is better’.

K11 ECO HOME in Beijing Beijing K11 is belonging to one of the Hong Kong New World company’s eco project. The brand of K11 combines ‘art, humanities, and natural’. The founder wants to create a place with art appreciation, cultural experience and environmental protection. It is opened at July 15, 2010, and it is the first large-scale exhibition of K11 environmental protection campaign. This K11 project advocates energy saving, emission reduction and environment-friendly life. The goal is to guide young people toward green and natural lifestyle by environment-friendly residence, retail, science, technology, and other diverse campaigns.

Project location: Northeast corner of Ciqikou, New World business circle, Chongwen District, Beijing Open hours: 10:00—17:00 (closed every Monday). Project area: 2200 square meters Main materials: plastic wood, steel, plastic, cloth art, carpet, glass, wood Main brands: Philip, NVC, brother K11 internal region: First Floor: Three environmental protection experience, two environment-friendly residence experience spaces. Second floor: Offices, printing area, leisure tea area, meeting area, Third floor: Top office. 16

From this case study, I learned how to use recycled, sustainable, and high technology to build an eco-space. For instance, I know how to use natural day lighting and Davidia involucrate to control inside lighting and temperature. For instance, I learned bamboo not only belongs to fast growth material with greater tensile strength than steel and greater withstand stress than concrete, but also with good ventilation, which can absorb sunlight in winter to preserve temperature. I will use these kind of sustainable materials and products for my project. 17

The Diesel Home Collection Installation

location: DIESEL SHIBUYA STORE, Cocoti B1-1F, 1-23-16 Shibuya-Ku 150-0002, Tokyo - Japan Diesel is a brand that offers the complete lifestyle package, mainly through fashion but also through a compatible home collection. Currently the Diesel Art Gallery is a digital, a cool store installation created by Beijing-based Japanese architect Yoshimasa Tsutsumi. The concept of this home collection is built around rock ‘n’ roll, casual living, and present “Successful Living from DIESEL”. It is designed on variety of outlines, and each one tracing a small space not only referring a room, but also present an extension feeling for the furniture itself. This showroom displayed merchandise and spatial installation at the same time. The wall is made by 1000 paper square pipes 40X40mm in diameter for the main body and 35X35mm in diameter for the drawers. It provides a new display method where goods and space are fused with each other. The wall likes glyphs when three-dimensionality is emphasized, and likes an inlay when flatness is focused, and even “corroded” with light. This tiny squares DIGITAL wall can let people DIG IT with their own way. ‘Possibilities for display are infinite here, as is our imagination’. This showroom with living concept incorporates Diesel’s trademark style and attitude. In collaboration with Moroso for furniture, Foscalini for lighting, and Zucchi for textiles, the collection is highly recognized with its designs as well as its quality. In this case study, I learned how to use simple materials to build multiple, and fantastic space. It gives me a vivid example to learn how to ‘show things’. Designers use repetition way to build an interesting showroom. The home collection space scale is similar with my project. I got my inspiration on how to display products from this Diesel store. Because this is a lifestyle branded-store, and with 10,763 sqf over two floors, it not only shows its apparel, accessories and home goods, but also houses café. It is a good way to add beverages to a flagship store. 18

Inspiration

Sanlitun Village, Beijing The Sanlitun Village is also called Taiguli Sanlitun. It is a modern shopping center in Beijing, Sanlitun area. Inspired by Beijing's traditional courtyards and comprisies of a mix of unusual shapes, textures and vibrant colors. Village South blends a traditional Hutong Village lifestyle with twenty-first century modernity and sophistication. Village North draws its courtyard form from Chinese Siheyuan, in which architectural style displays a feel of urban sophistication and keen sense for fashion.

20

The design of the Sanlitun Village blends the Beijing of the past with its worldlier, cosmopolitan present. The two halves that make up the Village complement one another structurally, and set the tone for a diverse experience here in Sanlitun. Sanlitun Village combines many famous retail stores and restaurants. There have many art and fashion display crossover projects located both indoor and outdoor. Most displays have interaction with people, which attract people come to the Village and try its artworks. Many retail stores set their flagship store in Sanlitun Village. I often wandering in this area and seek my design inspiration from their design. This village is main focus on 'human-scale' design, and it appears warm and welcoming, but also to both surprise and evoke intrigue in the visitor. The designers aim to create a living, breathing community, a place where locals and visitors alike can come along and be entertained. They wish to offer customers a variety of different activities and distractions to enhance their visit and keep them busy throughout the day, all year round.

Kengo kuma

Kuma was born in Kanagawa, Japan. He attended Eiko Gakuen junior and senior high schools in 1973. After completing a major in architecture at the University of Tokyo in 1979, he worked for a time at Nihon Sekkei and TODA Corporation. He then moved to New York for further studies at Columbia University as a visiting researcher from 1985 to 1986. In 1987, he founded the "Spatial Design Studio". Kuma’s art work always give people a new Asian natural feeling. In his words, a ‘fusion of the traditional and contemporary and made up of natural materials both traditional and modern.’ He likes to bring the outside in the interior, and let interior space present light and airy. Kengo Kuma has inspired me with his New Asian style art works. He use traditional East Asian symbols into a functional modern space.

Package Design

My undergraduate background is advertising, so I’m interested in package design. The function of a package is to protect and decorate products. It often uses an interesting way to attract customer to buy products. Package design is likes a small scale interior design. One is decorating products, another is decorating space. They all aim to evoke people’s attention, and have some interaction with people. Their goal is to give customers a special experience. A successful package design can increase sales. A successful interior design can increase visitors.

However, official statistics do not include the unofficial ‘floating population’ of unregistered rural migrants in Beijing, who constitute an estimated 40% of Beijing’s actual total population. Beijing’s population is growing rapidly, at an average rate of 3.8% per year. The population increase is approximately 44 percent over the previous decade. The Population of Beijing’s Urban Core is over 13 million. Core population density is 7837 per square kilometer. The downtown area of Beijing is growing every decade. Right now, the definition of Beijing downtown area is between the North and East Fourth Ring and South and West Third Ring.

Beijing Economy

GDP per capita of Beijing has been rising from 25, 000 RMB in 2001 to 77, 000 in 2007. The 204% increase is due to the fact that the economy of Beijing is growing faster than that of the population growth. The average wage is $1,500 per month. In addition, there are six high-end industrial districts (The Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park, The Financial District, The Economic Technical Development Zone, The Central Business District, The Airport Economic Zone, and The Central Olympic Zone.) that played a vital role in boosting Beijing’s economy. These industrial districts have contributed significantly to the industrial, information industrial and financial growth of Beijing over the years.

27

Beijing Transoprtation Beijing is an important transport hub in China. There are 3 train stations, and 2 airports surround the Beijing downtown area. The traffic of Beijing designed with five ring roads, but it appeared more rectangular than ring-shaped. Roads in Beijing often with the four compass directions. The public transportation in Beijing is very convenient. Beijing Subway has 17 lines, 227 stations, and 456 km (283 mi) of track. Beijing Subway was expected to reach 30 lines, 450 stations, and 1,050 kilometers (650 mi) in length until 2012. Nearly 95% residents inside the No. 4 Ring Road will be able walk to a station with in 15 minutes. There are nearly 1,000 public bus and trolleybus lines in the city, which includs three bus rapid transit lines. Beijing Future Plan

The Twelfth Five-Year Plan for the National Economic and Social Development of Beijing By Beijing Municipal People’s Congress on Jan 21th, 2011

The Five-Year Plans of People’s Republic of China are a series of social and economic development initiatives. Beijing Home Furnishing Market Beijing has a special style of retail location. Same types retails like to focus on the same area. For Beijing Home furnishings market, there are have three focus locations. The north side: the North Fourth Ring’s east and middle part. The east side: the East Fourth Ring and subway Line 1.The south side: the South Fourth Ring’s middle part. Before the 2000, there are not many residential apartments and community site out of the Third Ring area. The population centralized inside the Third Ring. Most furnishings retail chose the North and East Third Ring. With the Beijing’s house market development, and the development of economics and urban land, the downtown area grew to the Fourth Ring. Many famous home furnishings moved their locations to the Fourth Ring. I research some famous home furnishings retail stores in Beijing. There have four large retails sell some eco/green furniture. They are: LOHO the one brand of Juran furniture retail; Q&M furnishing retail; IKEA; Red apple furniture retail. LOHO sells some eco furniture, and they have VIP interior design service. If customer asked to use totally eco-friendly finishes to decorate their home, and using totally eco-friendly furniture, LOHO can do it. Q&M also have VIP interior design service, and they also can offer eco decorate and eco products for their customers. The home furnishing market research data from website shows some imformation about how customer choose their home furnishing products: 30

In Beijing, most people don’t understand what eco-friendly furnishings are. They only know these kinds of products are good for their health, and they like to have these products in their home. That’s why I add teaching function to let people got some sustainable knowledge. After they understand the importance of live with sustainable, they would like to buy my products. For my store’s location, there have 3 universities and four art design colleges at this area. It’s a good place to let these young people learn sustainable knowledge.

Building Analysis

Address: 8th, Ganyangshu Jia 16th Courtyard, N. 4th Ring Road East Chaoyang, Beijing, China Building Type: multiple-function apartment (2 stories commercial area, and 8 stories residential apartment) I choose 8th, Ganyangshu Jia 16th courtyard commercial space for my project, eco home furnishing complex. The total space is proximate 43,000 square feet, with two floors. The building is located at the front of Ganyangshu community, which faces N. 4th Ring Road. There has 16,145 square feet outside parking space with 66 carports. The neighborhoods of building include high-end residential apartments, bus stations, commercial stores and restaurants. It is a reinforced concrete structure with shear walls building. There have reinforced concrete columns support the building. For the safety, I cannot make a double space in commercial area. I will keep all satires and escalator for my project. However, I can remove interior walls in both commercial levels. The last retail use metal panels over the commercial exterior wall, and hide most of the windows. I can remove these exterior metal panels, and redesign exterior for my project. Construction end: 2001-April-01 Current Owners: Beichenshiye real estate development co., LTD Property Management Company: Hua Hui property management co., LTD

36

37

Current Status and Zoning:

The building’s residential area is full of residents, and commercial area is empty. The commercial area used to be Da Zhong Electronics retail. Da Zhong is an electronics chain, and it has 57 stores in Beijing. Beijing’s electronics market is intense competition right now. Da Zhong changed its marketing strategy, and it began to sell its products online. There were few people visited Da Zhong Electronics retail at 8th, Ganyangshu Jia 16th Courtyard, the North Fourth Ring. Customers are not satisfied with this store. They think that there are few kinds of products in this store, and they can’t find the products they want. There has a big scale department store called Ito Yokado at the other side of the street. The department store also sells electronics and other household products. An overpass connects Ito Yokado and this building. That’s why Da Zhong closed this store at 2012 summer. Right now, the whole commercial area is empty. I will use the old zone to help me design my project.

User Profile

Target userďźš Middle income home owners, individuals/ couples interested products and services. These figures are based on Beijing home furnishing market. The data shows that approximate 67% middle to high level home furnishing customer are home owners; approximate 58% are middle-incomes. Most of customers will have been born in the 60s and 70s, and live in Beijing. They accepted higher education, and open to the new design concepts. Many have a child, and the average age for their child is 9 to 25. These date from Beijing demography. These kinds of families have substantial sufficient saving, and like to spend money to redecorate and furnish their homes. They want high quality furnishings, and yet are aware of environmental and health issues. People lives in Beijing like shopping with the whole family; especially when purchasing durable goods like furniture. They like to shop and make decisions together because they use durable goods together.

Young designers and design students: This group comes to visit and learn sustainable design and concepts. They can work together with retailers to show their sustainable products at the gallery, or sell their products. There are five higher education institutes offer art and design courses, and they are in my site. It is convenient for these design students come to visit and learn sustainable, up-cycling, and other modern concept in my Eco home furnishing complex. It is a good place for students to study, meet designers and same majors’ students. It is a good platform to show their design products. 40

Client: furnishing company and product designers These companies want to use this commercial area to showing and sell eco home furnishing products. Product designers want to rent a retail space to show and sell their products. Client wants to cooperate with young students, hold some Design Competition and show students products. This kind of cooperative show and sell function often happens in boutique products stores, and high-grade shopping malls in Beijing. These stores like to attract young designers selling their products.

Program Statement 42

I named my project Eco Home Furnishing Complex. It is an innovative and collaborative project suit for abandoned commercial space in a multi-function apartment. The goal of my project is to create a multi-functional home furnishing retail, which not only sell eco furnishings for public, but also provide a platform for people, who like design and care about environment, and eager to learn new sustainable concept and show their product in my retail. My will use traditional Chinese Wu Xing as my design concept to design my project. I got my inspiration from my home’s neighborhood- the Sanlitun Village, and the famous designer, kengo Kuma. My project will combines selling function and education function together. My project will also combines traditional Chinese elements and modern sustainable idea together. Eco Home Furnishing complex is approximately 40,000 square feet with an additional approximate 16,000 square feet outside parking area, which located at the front of my building and face the North Fourth Ring. Because this is a reinforced concrete structure building, it is hard to remove floors and open a double space area. I will keep all of satires, escalator, and floors. However, I can remove interior walls for my project’s need. Right now, the exterior still covered metal panels, which was to be last retail’s advertising space. I will remove these meter panels, and provide enough natural day-lighting into my space. I will redesign outside parking area, and bring green land and bicycle parking into this area.

I plan to divide my Eco Home Furnishing complex into 6 functions When customers walk into my store at the east front door, they will first look at my furniture displaying area, approximate 10,000 square feet. This area includes restroom and storage. Next they will walk into shop space, which includes book store, home accessory shop, and students’ products shop.
