Social Situation

ABOUT

In the past twenty years, the development of the urbanization process in Beijing is significant. The fast speed evidences reflected in skyscrapers, cars, and complex express ways in Beijing. These high-speed miraculous developments not only enhance the GDP in Beijing, but also provoke some situations for this city. There are many city problems emerge from the city development, like a massive outsiders flock into the city leads to housing stress; a large sum of car ownership lead to traffic jams; a large amount of waste discharge and burning leads to land and air pollution. What’s more, during this large production and consumption age, many unscrupulous merchant manufacture low-quality and polluted products. They add toxic glue to adhesive furniture; add more chemical substances into paint or wall covering; add more volatile organic compounds into carpet or other fabrics. These low-quality products use a low price to attract customers, and their specifications overlooked the quality for themselves. Most customers do not realize that the toxic substances from low-quality products can harm for their health and pollute environment. As we know, people spend 80% time live inside of building, and they spend half time live in their homes. It’s important to create a safe and healthy indoor environment for every family. Home furniture and home products often contracted with people. Their quality directly affects people’s health. Customers are often concern about their life quality both from the food they eat and the products they use.

The Opposite House

DESIGN ABOUT

FOCUS SPACES

Inspiration

Famous architects Kengo Kuma designed The Opposite House. The green glass façade not only meant to invoke traditional Chinese screen, creating a clamming, forest-like shelter from the metro city, but also point out an eco-design master work. Hotel chose eco-friendly material to decorate all spaces. They use temperature sensor control system instead of air conditioner to change guest rooms’ temperature. Large atrium provides enough natural sunlight during the daytime. Small candles at the side of check-in table provide warm and welcome atmosphere during the night time. The artworks in this hotel are another ‘pop up’ hospitality experience. The way they display art works is a significantly transcend what we’ve typically seen. Guests often attracted by these design products when they check in, enjoy brunches, or go through the hallway. The hotel cooperates with local artists and hosting their artworks for three-month installation periods.

11

Beijing Traffic

The rapid growth of population leads to high vehicles growth. Over 4 million cars are running on the street every day. The annually added cars are more than 400,000. The Beijing governments continued to develop public transportation system, inadequate traffic policy, and enhance the outdoor parking fee.

ABOUT

Rose Kennedy Greenway

The Rose Kennedy Greenway is a mile-long belt of parks and green spaces in proximity to Boston Harbor. The parks reflect the comfortable scale of the adjacent North End neighborhood. Along the eastern edge, a trellis “pergola” covers a long “front porch” that provides both a place for sitting and an overlook for the lawn and the historic architecture beyond. A shallow water “canal” runs the length with vertical water jets adding sparkle and movement. This fountain harkens back to a century ago when a canal connected the harbor to important industrial operations. The parks include ideal spots for storytelling programs in the summer, picnics or sunbathing on the grass, and enjoying lunch or a snack from one of the nearby North End or Haymarket establishments. Children love the canal where they can wet their feet or watch their flip flops swirl around. It’s a great place to relax at the end of the day, meet friends or watch passersby to your heart’s content. Plants displayed here evoke a formal feel of past European style gardens with boxwood hedges enclosing a colorful array of spring blooming daffodils and summer perennials. Favorite perennials found here are Russian sage, lavender, purple cone flower, iris, and daylilies. Several flowering trees and shrubs encircle the gardens.

Designers: Schlessinger, Smallridge LLC and Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ltd.

Design Concept

W u

Xing is one of the

oldest Chinese philosophies. Wu Xing can be easily understood as five abstract materials, which are earth, metal, water, wood, and fire, that are ever changing and moving forces of five sorts. Chinese people think Wu Xing is a coherence model, and it is a generic rule of nature reproduced at all levels of the universe. The Wu Xing circle matrix allows the five elements to have a harmonious and balanced status. This theory is similar to the modern sustainability concept. Xing in Wuxing theory means movement and ever changing. The rules of nature movements and changing are same for human beings. The deeper meaning of ‘Xing’ is that humans are an integral part of nature. There are a number of texts about Wu Xing thinking in old Chinese history. In the Shui Jing collection ‘society should follow the patterns of Earth and Heaven…People should live with nature, and they cannot break nature rule just for pleasure’, ‘human behavior can contribute to the harmonious operation of nature, or disrupt it and cause chaos and disorder. The moral patterns for humanity and those of the natural cosmos are all interconnected and correlated.’

36

Concept implementation I use the superfacial meaning of Wu Xing concept to help me chose materials, color blending. I use every element as a sub idea to develop each focus space.

In the Wu Xing matrix meaning, each element does not exist in a space individually. It interactis with other elements. and live in the nature system. Foe mine each space design, I won’t create an individual ‘element’ space. I will create a small ‘eco-system’ for each space. I will use all five main material for each focus area.

‘Human is an integral part of nature’. There is a visual way to present this meaning is to use two closed pattern to show the connection between human and nature. One pattern is the concentric circles pattern of star in motion. The other is the human’s fingerprints. This repeating loop shape becomes the main pattern for my project. The loop becomes my key idea to design the project’s circulation.

Retail Showroom

The idea to design this space was from fire element in Wu Xing concept. Inspired by bonfire, designer created a large rotate fire ball model to display kitchenware. Custom-designed round shape rug used to present spread out fire flame. The bonfire’s idea was continually to be showed on the ceiling. Several fire flames shaped holes let the inside LED light shot through the ceiling panel. Triangle idea was to be transformed to the cork walls, which to be used to separate each kitchen space.

64

The lobby was designed with a minimalist view, which given the chance to introduce HOME 8 with a simple and direct way. Customer will discover a series of ‘rooms’ over the second floor. The idea to design the furniture showroom space was to create warm, cozy forest atmosphere.

The main idea for this indoor space is to use the ‘earth’ element to develop a marble cave environment. The blue grid carpet present water flows in the cave. The liner pattern wall paper and layers of ceiling panels create a whole cave experience. The transparent yellow chairs provide a float feeling like row on the water.

Autobiography

I was born and raised in a large city, Beijing, China. It is a developed, high-density city that combines history culture and modern creative together. When I was a child, my mom often took me to her work place and let me wander and read books. It was an art and design college library. From that time, I was attracted to these areas and interested in the process of design. I studied advertising during my college years, and was particularly interested in interaction advertisement because it combined mass media and interior design. Working on these projects, I felt like I was paying more attention to the details of life, and using my design to create a better life for people. After graduation, I spent a year working at different jobs, getting different work experiences, but slowly I realized what I really want to do is design. One of the jobs I got was working at a beautifully designed hotel. This hotel was designed by Kengo Kuma, who is a famous architect/ designer. Working there, I was inspired by his work, and decided to study interior design. I also knew that I wanted a broad, international approach to the field and learned I could get that in the Academy’s program.

Statement of professional goals

I am interested in hospitality design, public space design, and 3D movie scenes modeling design. I have some working experience about this design field. After graduation, I hope to work in the U.S. for a period, so I can absorb all kinds of design ideas and get deeper into the design process. After that, I will go back to Beijing, my hometown. There I hope to work in a large interior design company or teach design at the college level. In China, it is common that many designers both teach and design on their own or for other companies.
