The Insufferable Know It All Everybody knows them, people who know everything. At least, that’s what they believe. The internet is their podium. Pontificate and irritate...the Know-it-All’s creed. “Those who always know what’s best are a universal pest.” ~ Piet Hein With their fingers flying across the keyboard, the Google master must prove how smart or knowledgeable they are by refuting everything you say or believe in. They know how you should raise your kids, they know how you should vote, they know how you should or should not have faith, hell they know if you should take an aspirin or not. What’s the point? Can’t you just nod and say yes? Nope. Know-it-alls always have something to say. And the most endearing quality of all, they are never wrong. Could you imagine? A know-it-all who says they’re wrong? Not in a million years. They have too big of an ego for that. “The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance; it is the illusion of knowledge.” ~Stephen Hawking People who genuinely think that they know everything are toxic. Admittedly I have argued passionately with knowit-alls. A person who has never raised a child, frantically using the Google handbook of parenting to disprove a young parent’s method of parenting is by far my least favorite know-it-all. Every family is different, every child is different. Bottom line, it is no one’s business how another raises their child (barring abuse of course). I’m sure I’m not the only person who can’t stand these types of people. Many of my friends and people I work with always talk about how know-it-alls annoy them at work or socially. I completely get it. Some people just get on your nerves. Having said this out loud, I also realize I need to find a way to not fall into their trap. I receive a motivational quote everyday from a site called Shine. Apparently, this is a hot topic because this week’s messages were about dealing with know-it-alls. I have been inundated with the smartest people on the planet recently. So much so, I feel as though I must be incredibly smart to attract these geniuses. With that said, here are three ways I deal with know-it-alls. 1. Don’t Get Annoyed with Them Obvious, right? So why do you get annoyed? Sure, knowit-alls are annoying, but they thrive on the energy you give

10

| Yo u r H o m e t o w n e | I s s u e C X I V

them. If someone tells you they know your trade of 30 years better than you, even though they’ve never done what you do, simply say, “Well, aren’t you the genius!” How can they argue with you? It’s what they are trying to prove. 2. Don’t Try to “School” Them That is the biggest waste of time you can possibly think off, trying to share knowledge with a know-it-all. What’s the point? They already know it all! Maybe you’re trying to help them. But think about it, what are you even doing? They can’t be saved by anyone else other than themselves. 3. Stay Away from Them Over the past several years I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to work with all kinds of people from our community. We have some truly delightful people here in our home town. But I run away screaming when I sense a hint of a know-it-all. I don’t want them as clients, friends, or colleagues, they just cause headaches. I honestly don’t care if they think I’m not nice because I don’t want to listen to their pretentious stories. Knowing Nothing Is Wisdom At the end of the day, know-it-alls are losers. The only thing we can do is not behave like them. Why? In the words of the great Socrates: “I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing.” And that’s the only universal truth there is: We know nothing. The beauty of the “I know nothing” mindset is that it brings you closer to people than you can imagine. Once you stop caring about whether you’re right or not, you can really get to know people without judgment. If you put your listening ears on you will realize it’s great to hear another person’s perspective. Or maybe, just maybe, you will learn something. There are very little absolute truths in life. And that’s okay. But it’s the “admitting it” part and realizing that we don’t know much at all, that takes true wisdom. No response is a response, remember that. ~Peace,

Should You Borrow from Your 401(k)? If you work for a business that offers a 401(k) plan, consider yourself fortunate, because a 401(k), with its tax advantages and variety of investment options, is a great way to save for retirement. But what if you need to tap in to your plan before you retire? Is it a good idea to borrow from your 401(k)? To begin with, you need to determine if a loan is even available. You can only borrow from your 401(k) if you’re still working for the company that offers the plan, but even so, you’ll have to check with your human resources area to determine if loans are allowed. If they are, you’ll want to weigh the pros and cons before taking action. On the “pro” side, it’s pretty easy to get a 401(k) loan – there’s no formal loan application and no minimum credit score required. Plus, you’re only borrowing from yourself, and you can generally repay the loan with automatic paycheck deductions, typically over a five-year period. However, you’ll also encounter some “cons” when taking out a 401(k) loan, particularly concerning taxes. If you had not borrowed from your 401(k), the money you took out could have been growing on a tax-deferred basis, assuming you used pre-tax dollars to fund your plan, and your withdrawals will only be taxed once. But when you borrow from your plan, you will have to repay it, along with interest, with money you’ve earned – and been taxed on – and then, when you withdraw it later, you’ll pay taxes on it again. Furthermore, if you leave your employer before fully repaying your loan, the outstanding balance likely will be taxable, although you may have a grace period in which to pay it off and avoid taxes. And perhaps even more important, taking money from your 401(k), even if you repay it later, will almost certainly slow the growth potential of your account – which, in plain terms, means you may have less money available for retirement. Of course, if you encounter an emergency, and you have nowhere else to turn, you may need to borrow from your 401(k). And some plans allow hardship withdrawals for medical expenses and other needs, although you’ll still be taxed on the amount you withdraw.

yourhometowne@gmail.com

But you’d probably be better off if you can prepare, well in advance, for situations in which you need immediate access to a sizable sum. One way of doing this is to build an emergency fund containing six months’ to a year’s worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. You also might find some resources in the part of your investment portfolio held outside your 401(k). For example, you can always withdraw contributions to a Roth IRA without incurring taxes (although the earnings on these contributions could be taxable if you take the money out before you’re 59½ and you’ve had your account less than five years). In any case, you work hard to build your 401(k) – so, no matter where you are in life, think carefully about how you will use the money. Chris Nyhan runs the Edward Jones office in Burnt Hills, NY. What is Success Coaching? Ask the Coach: Kim Perone Q: What can coaching do for me? A: Coaching provides an opportunity to clarify your desires in life and set a path to achieve them. As coaches, we hold space for you to get to know you. We are unbiased listeners, questioners, and teachers. I teach what I wished I had learned when I was busy in business being tough and accomplished, plowing through piles of work, chasing down projects and building up prestige. I teach mindfulness, brain training, manifesting, inner guidance, resilience, ancient philosophy, and authentic success. In coaching, clients confirm that they are worthy of their own investment and they are! This investment can be life changing. We spend most of our lives focused on others. Time in self reflection is essential to living well; time to process situations, prioritize facets of life, and refine direction to live your best life. Life is busy, noisy, and filled with messages that we need to walk away from to live well. In fact, there are many myths we tackle in coaching. Below are a few. Myth 1: If I am exhausted, overwhelmed, and focused on pleasing others, I am succeeding. You do not need to feel drained to be successful. What is success? Authentic success involves finding balance, happiness, and most importantly feeling good. Your life is happening right now. Myth 2: Multitasking is essential to getting things done. Multitasking is task switching and results in diminishing returns and trains our brains to find distraction. Single tasking, whenever possible, returns focus and improves effectiveness. A side benefit is the ability to experience your life more deeply and enjoy individual tasks and moments making life a living meditation. Myth 3: Stillness is laziness. Studies show that meditation and time in stillness is good for our brains and bodies. We can meditate, relax, and recharge in stillness. We are human beings, not human doings. Breaking this myth can open up a whole new world, one where we are connected to our inner guidance rather than overly connected to outside influences. It provides us a method to connect to our center and stay grounded when life situations around us may be chaotic or stressful. Myth 4: If I make other people happy, then I am happy. If we are always focused on making other people happy, we may find ourselves quite unhappy. First, we do not and should not control the emotions of others. Second, we are responsible for our own happiness. Thirdly, when we are focused on making others happy, we begin feeling resentful. This is an indication that a boundary needs to be established. Myth 5: Self-care is indulgent. Self care is absolutely essential, important, and benefits not only us, but everyone around us. Self care is not selfish! You cannot give from an empty vessel. For many, busting these myths is the beginning of a paradigm shift

The Spring Real Estate Market is the Busiest of the Year! from Christopher Haddon, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker Howard Hanna Real Estate Services

If you’re trying to sell your home during this season, it’s time to start preparing! Here are a few tips to get started. Step 1: Get that house in selling condition with some quick tips you can start doing yourself! Disassociate Yourself from the Home - Let go of your emotional attachment to the home and focus on the fact that soon this will not be your house anymore. De-personalize Your Home - Pack up most of those personal photographs and family heirlooms. Buyers can’t always see past personal artifacts, and you don’t want them to be distracted. De-clutter - If you haven’t used it in over a year, you probably don’t

need it. Rearrange Bedroom Closets and Kitchen Cabinets - Buyers love to snoop and will open closets and cabinet doors – better tidy up! Rent a Storage Unit – Remove any furniture that block paths and walkways Remove/Replace Favorite Items - If you want to take the window coverings or chandelier with you, remove them now. If a buyer never sees it, they won’t want it. Make Minor Repairs – Replace cracked floor or counter tiles, patch holes, fix leaky faucets, etc. Make the House Sparkle! – Wash windows, vacuum daily, hang fresh towels Scrutinize – Go outside and open your front door. Does your house welcome you? Try to view the house as a new buyer would envision their new home. Check Curb Appeal – Keep the sidewalks clear, paint faded window trim, trim your bushes. Step 2: Know what your home is worth. A Comparative Market Analysis, commonly referred to as a CMA, reviews specific information obtainable from your local Multiple Listing Service (MLS) to assess a range of property value based on the action between buyers and sellers. A CMA appraises the market value of your home based on evaluation of the following situations: 1. Sold Properties - These are the properties, similar to yours, reflecting the selling price paid by recent qualified buyers. 2. Pending Sales - These are properties under contract which have not yet closed. Pending sales can be helpful in determining a listing price for your property by comparing similar properties that recently secured offers from buyers. 3. Failed to Sell - These are properties which were recently listed, but failed to sell. By studying these properties we can determine the price range a potential buyer will most likely stay within for a home similar to yours. 4. Active Listings - These are properties which will compete with your property in the marketplace. Since they have not yet sold, their true market value has not been determined. Step 3: Call Christopher Haddon for a no-obligation consultation and receive a FREE CMA to see what your home is worth! Upstate Connection What New York Really Needs Is Meaningful (and Real) Mandate Relief for Local Governments

The governor recently announced that he would not sign a budget agreement without the tax cap being made permanent. Which is fine since the tax cap is nothing more than a public relations tool used to try and trick the residents into thinking that the state politicians are actually doing something to address the high property taxes in New York; spoiler alert: they’re not. Despite his theatrics, it’s interesting to watch the powerful Andrew Cuomo blame everyone else for the high taxes in this state except himself. He tries to get you to believe that it’s the federal government’s fault, or the local government’s fault, or the counties’ fault; even the weather’s fault, but certainly not his fault. We live in a one-party, topdown, command and control, Democrat-led state government and he is trying to get you to believe that he’s unable to fix any of the financial problems plaguing the state. The fact is that the state’s tax cap does nothing to address the underlying issue that is driving up the cost of government: state mandates. It’s expensive to do business in New York and that’s true for the private sector as much as it is for the local governments across the state. There are many reasons for this, but the most impactful are the many mandates that the state pushes down to local government. I’ll address the latest one to come out of Albany, voter reform. New York lawmakers passed a package of voter reforms recently which includes a provision that would require polls to be open a full 10 days prior to the actual “Election Day.” While any reform that increases voter access to the polls is good – as long as the state places the proper protections against fraud – this reform would place a financial burden on local governments. In this state, counties are responsible for registering voters and actually holding elections, but that doesn’t mean the county pays for it. In counties like Schenectady, the costs of all elections are pushed down to the town level as a “budgetary pass through.” This means the county racks up the bill and the local property taxpayer pays it. Now with this early voting reform, the governor and Legislature are piling on the costs that will eventually hit all taxpayers. Elections weren’t always so expensive to run. The truth is that there was a time when towns ran elections and were responsible for the spending. In 2005, for example, when the towns ran elections in this county, the total annual cost for the town of Glenville was just $42,000. Then, the county took over running the Board of Elections and promised lower costs that would be realized due to savings from “consolidation.” Who could argue against the efficiencies of consolidation, right? Well, fast forward to 2019 when the county charged the town almost $400,000 for elections. That’s a 10-fold increase in costs in the 14 years since the county took over running the Board of Elections. Now, we will have to add the costs of the unfunded mandate called voter reform that the state just dumped on us. Exactly what that cost may be has not been articulated or even considered by lawmakers in Albany and few are really sure how much this will end up costing. We know that increased costs of manpower to staff polling places and other operational costs will likely push an additional $500,000 or so onto the local governments. That means that early voting will likely cost yourhometowne@gmail.com

the taxpayer an additional 2% in new property taxes. All this “reform” has led to one thing: The taxpayer paying more in property taxes thanks to the endless unfunded mandates that the state pushes on local governments that cause higher property tax bills. If state lawmakers want to increase access to the polls, they should pay for it. Otherwise it’s just another unfunded mandate. Placing a tax cap on local governments without simultaneously enacting meaningful mandate relief is morally wrong and will eventually bankrupt our communities…but, sure, maybe it is just the weather driving everyone out after all. Mortensen Motorsports Prepares For the 2019-Racing Season By Ron Szczerba Spring is an exciting time for any local stock car racing fan as the season is fast approaching in approximately a month or so. It is also an exciting time for the drivers of those racecars as the start of a new season, hopefully a successful season, is upon them. But with that excitement comes a lot of work to get ready for the season, which Mark Mortensen the driver of the Your Hometowne sponsored #1M knows all about. Mark has been busy in the garage over the winter months, painting and prepping the body panels for his #1M sportsman car before lettering took place. Ricky Achzet of R3 Graphics did a great job lettering the body panels of the #1M racecar which was first displayed at the Capital District Race Car Show at the Via Port Mall just a couple of weeks ago. Many people have different ideas of what the car show is all about. For Mortensen Motorsports it means having a representative of the race team by the racecar at all times during the racecar show hours. The purpose of this is to handout items to the kids who come by, in the case of the Mortensen Motorsports Racing team that means pencils and autographed pictures of the racecar. The racecar show is a great time for family members and friends to stop by the racecar and for sponsors on the racecar to be able to see the result of what their sponsorship money is being spent on.

Once the racecar show was completed, the next event for the Mortensen Motorsports Racing Team was their annual dinner dance fundraiser, which this year was held at the Winners Circle Restaurant in Fonda, NY the Saturday after the racecar show at the Via Port Mall. At the fundraiser, DJ Johnny B (John Buehler who is Mark’s Father in Law) provided the music. John’s band Amped Up is also a sponsor on the #1M racecar for the 2019-racing season. Activities at the fundraiser included musical chairs for the children and adults, a game for the children called “pin the lug nut on the wheel” where the child is blindfolded and has to try to get the lug nut somewhere on the tire itself. DJ Johnny B took requests and there were many different dances performed on the dance floor during the evening. There were also over 50 raffle prizes donated for the event which people could purchase raffle tickets for and try to win along with a 50/50 raffle. Now with the “pre-season” events over, Mark will concentrate on getting the #1M racecar race ready for the warmup session at his home track, the “track of Champions” Fonda Speedway on Saturday, April 13 with the opening event of the season for points the following Saturday on April 20.

Imagine the Possibilities Like many of you, I wear multiple hats in the world that we live in. Yet, today all I can relate to is that I am the daughter of two amazing parents who are in the fight for their lives, every day, battling cancer. Part of me wants to curl up in a ball and disappear from the world while the other part wants to be the daughter that my parents will be proud of. One who will continue their legacy of helping others. My parents have always been the ones that I could lean on in every aspect of my life. They have been my mentors, caregivers and role models. They have taught me how to be compassionate and how to be strong. Now the time has come for them to lean on me, along with my brothers and sisters. My parents who have always led by example in caring for our family and others, have raised a generation with the skills on how to take control in a situation….how blessed we are. The other night, I told my mother that the blessing is that she can allow us to handle what is needed. She can rest in the fact that we are here for them. I know that this brings my parents some comfort. Sadly, not everyone in our family’s situation can say the same thing. Not everyone has 13 children, 45 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Many find themselves Feeling and Being Completely Alone in a challenge with nowhere to turn. When my mother, Joyce and I founded the Mother Teresa Cancer Awareness Fund, it was to assist those in our community who had nowhere else to turn, who felt alone in their struggle. We looked to offer Hope in a difficult time. I had no idea that the Mother Teresa Cancer Awareness Fund would form a community of people who would end up being My support system; a community who helps and supports those in need to know that they are not alone in the middle of the storm. I went to church recently, not a traditional church… not a church at all, as who would ever think that Proctor’s Theatre could be a church? You see, for Christmas I gifted my parents tickets to see The Temptations and The Four Tops with my husband and I. I had no way of knowing that in three short months my father would be too ill to attend. I believe that we are put where we are meant to be in a given moment. I struggled with not wanting to go because I knew how much my father would have enjoyed the evening but I also knew it was important for my mother to get out of the house for a short time. There is something about Motown music that touches you deep in your soul and as I listened to The Temptations sing the words it hit me hard and brought about waves of emotion as I prayed Just Let My Parents “Stay With Me.” Tears poured from my eyes as I listened and heard the songs that were sung to Only Me that night.

“Listen, I gotta cry ‘cause crying eases the pain, oh yeah People this hurt I feel inside Words could never explain, I just wish it would rain, oh let it rain, rain, rain, rain, ooo baby Let it rain, oh yeah, let it rain Day in day out my tear-stained face Pressed against the window pane My eyes search the skies desperately for rain ‘Cause rain drops will hide my tear drops And no one will ever know that I’m crying.” I experienced such release, I needed to cry and let the pain out, I needed the permission to Just Be in the moment, to be lost in a sea of faces. I received so much more than the gift of music that the performers shared with all of us who were seated there. I was given the gift of being lost in my emotions and the release of the pain of watching two people I love more than life, journey through the next chapter that ultimately we must all face alone. Tonight, my friends, I pray, that you hold your family closer, love them harder and cherish every moment that is given to you as a gift to take the journey with them for as far as you will be allowed to go. Create memories with them that will comfort you during the cloudy days. Laugh and smile with them as long as you can, let go of the negativity that may stand in your way of embracing the journey and when the journey leads to tears and heartbreak, hold their hands and remember the bright shining moments that allow you to Simply Be. Easter Blooms! I love Easter...because it is a milestone on our way to the warmer days ahead. Another reason I love Easter is the appearance of all the flowers used to celebrate the holiday. The first flower we think of is the traditional Easter Lily. Most of the Easter Lilies sold are not hardy, but if you cut them back by about a third after they finish flowering, feed them and plant them in a sunny location in June, you may be rewarded with a second round of flowers in late summer. Traditional Easter Lilies are lovely but aren’t something that we can reliably resurrect in our flowerbeds here in USDA zone 5. Lately, hardy varieties of lilies are being offered at the garden centers at Easter. Asiatic and oriental lilies have become a popular substitute for the traditional Easter Lily. Once they finish flowering, you can cut off the flowers (leave the leaves on) and plant the bulb in your flowerbed. It won’t flower again this year but will come up and flower next summer. If you go this route, make sure to check out the display of hardy lily bulbs available in the garden center. They can also be planted right away in your beds, and they WILL grow and flower this summer and for many years to come. Remember to some Bio-Tone starter food to the planting holes. Also available at Easter are hardy bulbs that have been tricked into flowering early for our enjoyment during the holiday. Daffodils, tulips and the fragrant hyacinths are all popular. These too can be planted outside after the flowers are done. Just cut off the flower stem (leave the leaves) and plant them into your beds. Like the hardy lilies, these bulbs won’t flower again this year, but they’ll be back next spring for you to enjoy...again, don’t forget the Bio-Tone starter food. Hardy miniature roses have also become a popular Easter plant. Miniature roses are also winter hardy and can get transplanted into our flowerbeds. I’d wait until the middle of May or later to plant them

since they are way ahead of the season and can’t handle a frost like the lilies and hardy bulbs I mentioned above can. Once established, hardy miniature roses will have no trouble making it through the winter ahead and will dazzle us with more and more blossoms for years to come. Make sure they get a sunny location and the Bio-Tone starter food, of course. Begonias have also become a popular option at Easter. Begonias aren’t hardy, but they can add some great color over summer in a semishady flowerbed. Wait to plant then until mid to late May when all danger of frost is past. Snip off the flowers as they go by, and you’ll get plenty more to enjoy especially if you feed them every couple of weeks with Jack’s Blossom Booster soluble plant food. Before frost gets them, you can pot them up and bring them indoors to enjoy over winter if you wish. While not a winter hardy plant, cyclamen make a wonderful flowering houseplant that can provide years of enjoyment. They enjoy a bright location in the home but no direct sunlight other than a couple hours of morning sun. They also like it cool so they are a great option for unheated rooms in the home. Water only when the soil gets dry...they grow from a tuber so they prefer to be on the dry side rather than being constantly wet. Hothouse azaleas traditionally make an appearance at Easter. These azaleas are cousins of the hardy azaleas that you’ll find outside in the nursery for landscape use. Hothouse azaleas are beautiful and can be grown as a houseplant but will only flower once a year. Likewise, the hydrangeas that are in flower at Easter aren’t generally varieties that are hardy in our USDA hardiness zone 5. They can be grown as a houseplant. You might have some luck with them but they are most often enjoyed for a couple of weeks after the holiday and then discarded. Thanks for the read. Peter Bowden • pbowden2@nycap.rr.com

Introducing Michael Boyle, our new team member at The Law Office of Kate Toombs

Bankruptcy Rates Rising Among Older Americans Bankruptcy is an option that all individuals should be educated about when planning their financial future. While it’s always optimal to try and repay debts, sometimes the costs of necessities such as health care, utilities, and home expenses make repayment impractical. As such, when faced with limited resources and mounting debt, it may be worth considering bankruptcy as an option to help protect your financial future. In bankruptcy, many assets are protected from creditors’ reach and most debts qualify for discharge upon the successful completion of an individual bankruptcy. People file bankruptcy for a variety of reasons, but the leading causes have remained constant for quite some time: (i) decline in income and (ii) medical costs. For older Americans, a rise in both medical expenses and consumer prices oftentimes outpace adjustments to their fixed income sources, such as Social Security and pension. For example, a recent study indicated that 41% of older Americans’ Social Security income was used for out-of-pocket health costs, notwithstanding access to Medicare. The same study anticipates those medical costs to increase to 50% by 2030. Accordingly, older Americans have seen themselves increasingly exploring bankruptcy protection as a viable option in order to protect their financial viability. In August of 2018, The Consumer Bankruptcy Project came out with statistics which provided cautious insight about the economic health of older Americans: bankruptcy filings by people 65 and older are rising sharply. Researchers found a two-fold increase in the rate at which older Americans are filing for bankruptcy and a nearly fivefold increase in the percentage of older Americans participating in the U.S. bankruptcy system. Older American’s representation among individuals in active bankruptcies has never been higher.

Pursuant to the Consumer Bankruptcy Project’s report, the median amount of debt owed by older American’s filing bankruptcy is approximately $100,000.00. The median senior bankruptcy filer’s net worth was negative $17,390 compared to positive $250,000.00 for their non-bankruptcy counterparts. Additionally, older filers debt loads are approximately 10% higher than their younger counterparts, even though older filer’s incomes are approximately 20% lower than their younger counterparts. These numbers reveal an even harsher reality: while younger filers have a longer period of time to recover from crippling debt-loads, older filers do not enjoy that luxury. The number of bankruptcies filed in 2017 were the lowest they have been since 1990; however, the rate of filings among older Americans continues to increase. Experts predict that when the next recession hits, older Americans will be harder hit given these fixed income considerations coupled with rising costs of health care related expenses. While we are currently in one of the longest periods of economic growth in America, economic health is cyclical. Experts predict another recession within the next one to three years. Should that happen, one must ask oneself whether bankruptcy is the best option to protect necessary assets while erasing or restructuring, certain debts for long term financial stability. We’re here to help secure your financial future.

Are You and Your Kids Becoming Elephants on Strings? Have you ever been to a circus and wondered why such a big animal doesn’t just break that tiny little chain around its ankle? The answer is that the elephant is living in a state of what is called “Learned helplessness.” The way to train an elephant is to begin by attaching a very big, very strong chain to its leg and then forcing it to go to the limits of the chain over and over again. Since this is such a strong chain, the elephant can’t break it and it quickly learns not to even try any more. IT LEARNS TO BE HELPLESS! After a while, the trainer uses a slightly smaller chain, one that is not quite as strong. He/she then progressively moves to smaller and smaller chains over time until one is reached that is the size you see in the circus. The elephant has the power to knock down a house, but because it believes it cannot break the chain, it doesn’t even try. In fact, this is so effective that the best trained elephants only need a thin piece of string to keep them in line! “Fascinating,” you’re probably thinking, “But what in the world does that have to do with me and my kids?” Most kids are raised in the medical mindset. They are taught from a very early age that they have been given bodies that are defective, weak and need constant help from the outside in order to function well. In fact, the main goal of most people raised in this way is not even optimal function; it is

Scotia United Methodist Church 201 North Ten Broeck Street Scotia, New York 518-372-9575 Friday, May 3, 2019: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2019: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Bag Sale @ 12 noon on Saturday Lunch will be Available on Both Days Coffee and Doughnuts in the Morning yourhometowne@gmail.com

simply to NOT GET SICK! This belief that we are weak is passed on from one generation to the next almost at birth with the use of vitamin K shots, antibiotics in the eyes, vaccines, formula instead of breastfeeding, Tylenol for the fevers associated with the normal development of teeth, fluoride treatments in our water and toothpaste, pain relievers, etc. Our kids grow up believing that we must rely on something from outside ourselves in order to function well and it is reinforced year after year after year. This is not dissimilar to the method used by our elephant trainers. Chiropractic raises kids with the exact opposite mindset. Chiropractic says our bodies are the vehicles we have been given in and through which we express whatever we were intended to be. It also says that a clear connection between our brains and bodies is necessary for us to adapt to all of the physical, chemical and mental stresses we face each day, heal from any damage that may have occurred, and continue growing toward the full expression of our purpose and potential in life. You see, chiropractic helps people to understand the awesome power they actually are! It helps them “break the chains” of believing they are defective and weak and allows them to give up their reliance on outside remedies and drugs. Drugs fool people into believing their bodies are functioning just fine. This causes them to no longer be aware of warning signals their bodies are giving them to avoid certain things. They also work by controlling nature, bypassing the natural systems set up in your body that work to continually adapt, heal and grow you toward your full potential in life. Chiropractic helps people move beyond a goal of simply “not getting sick” and onto a higher vision of what is possible with their lives, because the full expression of this perfection within automatically brings with it optimal health…AND SO MUCH MORE!
