“Everyone dies, but not everyone truly lives” `William Wallace Last week Eleanor (Ken’s Mom) passed away peacefully in her home with her daughter Kathleen by her side. “You add value to people when you value them.” ~John Maxwell
“Tell Cheryll I said hello” are the words I have heard every week since Christmas of 2015, my first Christmas spent with the Keeler clan. Ken’s Dad George was still alive then, I am glad I was able to see them together, to witness the love that they had. Eleanor was the most gracious woman I have ever met. She always made sure to include everyone around her, 7 children, 11 grandchildren, 7 greatgrandchildren, 2 great-great grand-children and all the spouses and friends that were her extended family were invited to holiday gatherings. Each one received birthday cards, anniversary cards, thoughtful gifts, she valued the people in her life. She created a sense of belonging. Eleanor touched and hugged and sang and loved her way through life, her thoughts were pure and honest. In her heart she knew it could it all end tomorrow, and confidently say there were no regrets. She lived her life to the fullest because she valued herself. She put on her make-up, did her hair and put on a matching outfit every single day. It made her feel good, it was how she took care of herself. There was no slacking around Eleanor. She taught her children to be self-sufficient, to which I am eternally grateful. Ken does laundry, cooks, cleans right along with me. We work as a team, and because of that our lives are better.

Whenever I went to visit Eleanor, she would smile so big, her smile was beautiful, it came from deep in her soul. She would ask me how the paper was doing, what was my column about, how are the dogs? How are my grandkids? She tended to people like she tended to her gardens. Her love made you grow; when you sat with her you felt important. I would sit a little taller, feel a little smarter when I was with her. Her charm filled the room, but it never took it over. “Men are what their mothers made them.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
Eleanor was more than a mother to her family, she was a friend, a trusted advisor, a listener, a teacher. Her children respected her, loved her, they spent time with her. I have reaped the benefit of how she raised my guy. Ken gives me the same smile she gave me when I went to see her. He appreciates life, what we have, he celebrates the little things. He remembers his grandkids birthdays, he brings me flowers on the 24th of each month because our first date was June 24th, 2015. Eleanor raised a good man, she raised 7 good people. Kathleen, Ken’s sister, I think of her as “the family glue”. If someone is cracking, Kathleen glues them back together. She props them up until the glue dries, then puts them “back in service”. There is no slacking around Kathleen either. I miss Eleanor. She loved my paper, Ken would bring her a copy as soon as it was done. She would read my column and talk to me about what I wrote. I would sit taller, feel smarter. I would feel grounded because she believed in me, she believed in what I do. “A beneficent person is like a fountain watering the earth, and spreading fertility; it is, therefore, more delightful to give than to receive.” — Epicurus
Eleanor was a fountain, offering those around her to drink her kindness, allowing them to grow. I loved that about her.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. The fire is so delightful and I have no place to go. The old tattered Christmas tree box gives way to our beautiful tree. So grand standing over seven feet tall. Red and green lights glow from deep inside the branches. Treasured ornaments sparkle and shine. The angel graces the top for its 26th year. The village is set up, not a wire or cord to be seen. An entire town built on six shelves. The cobble stone streets are dusted with snow. The church and the street lights shed a glow for the shoppers below. The town square offers music and hot cocoa. The people gather for the tree lighting. 1, 2, 3! How exciting! If you are quiet you can hear them singing..Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree so merry and bright.
The fire is slowly dying and I was nestled down for a nice long winters nap. When out on the lawn there was such a clatter. I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter. I threw on my hat and I threw on my coat. I flew like a flash. A red sleigh seemed to have crashed. As Jack Frost nipped at my nose I knew it was Santa I could tell by his clothes. Fur from his head to his foot, twinkle in his eye and cheeks like a rose. He gave me wink and a little head nod. He laid a finger along side of his nose. He said... “on Dasher and Dancer, on Prancer and Vixen, on Comet and Cupid and Donne and Blitzen” The sleigh started to move and changed its position. He climbed aboard and he flew out of sight. The glistening snow fell as I stood in awe. The air had a feeling of Christmas. The weary world rejoices. Can you hear what I hear? Those beautiful angel voices. I look to the sky and to my wonder , a star, a star. Dancing in the night. Tax Considerations in Estate Planning – 2022
Without considering the tax implications in designing and implementing your estate plan, you could unwittingly make a decision that costs your beneficiaries in the form of taxes which might have been avoidable. Estate taxes are not the only tax to be considered. The Federal gift and estate tax numbers are out for 2022. The basic exclusion amount for Federal Estate tax is set at $12,060,000. The annual gift tax exclusion is $16,000. This means that most of you reading this have no concerns about Federal estate tax during 2022. This also means that you can each give up to $16,000 per person during 2022 without the need to file a gift tax return reporting the gift to the IRS. The 2021 New York State Estate tax exclusion is $5,930,000. This figure will likely be updated for 2022, but has not yet been released. Planning documents may be properly prepared, but somehow the plan goes off-track because life happens -- accounts evolve, family dynamics change. Additionally, built-in income taxes that carry over with gifted and inherited assets with unintended consequences. Here are some examples.
Although all three received an asset which appeared to have the same value, the income tax consequences of each can make the net realized benefit uncertain and unequal. A plan could be balanced between children, but still not optimize taxes. For example, where significant medical expenses are paid with savings. These medical expenses could be deducted on an income tax return to the extent they exceed 7.5% of AGI, mitigating the tax due. Additionally, the parent may be in a lower income tax bracket than the child, resulting in a lesser tax payable by the parent than the child would pay on the same withdrawal. Imagine, three hypothetical transfers of $100,000 each, payable to children Adam, Becky and Cindy. Adam is the beneficiary of a retirement account, out of which he will be required to withdrawn all funds over a ten-year period. Not only must Adam pay income taxes on 100% of the withdrawals in the years received, but the distributions may push him (and his wife) into a higher income tax bracket. Becky receives an investment account on which she was made a co-owner. At the time Becky was added to the account, she was “gifted” 50% ownership, with a carry-over cost basis. On death of the original owner, Becky received a “step-up” in basis to the other half. This means that there are unrealized long-term capital gains on 50% of the account, which will be payable as assets are traded or liquidated. Cindy was the “transfer on death” beneficiary of an investment account. Cindy will receive a full “step-up” in basis and only will be required to pay capital gains on trades or liquidations on any increase in value after the date of death.

Chiropractic: for healing the natural way! “We think that if we can make our immune systems stronger, we’ll be better able to fight off this coronavirus, as well as other viral and bacterial pathogens”. This statement was from a recent article based on new findings from researchers at Washington University. But, us chiropractors have been saying this ALL ALONG! According to the World Health Organization’s ranking of the world’s health systems, the US healthcare system is the most expensive in the world but consistently ranks one of the lowest in healthcare out of developed nations—37th to be exact. It’s no wonder the US is one of only two countries that allow direct to consumer drug ads on TV. Big pharma does not want us to be healthy; they make too much money keeping us sick. We are a sick country. Speaking of big pharma, I am reminded of the quote: “I take aspirin for the headache caused by the Zyrtec I take for the hay fever I got from Relenza for the uneasy stomach from the Ritalin I take for the short attention span caused by the Scopoderm TS I take for the motion sickness I got from the Lomotil I take for the diarrhea caused by the Xenical for the uncontrolled weight gain from the Paxil I take for the anxiety from the Zocor I take for my high cholesterol because EXERCISE, A GOOD DIET, AND REGULAR CHIROPRACTIC CARE IS JUST TOO MUCH TROUBLE!!” This statement is meant to be sarcastic, obviously, but sadly it is true! Unfortunately, most people in this country want the quick fix. We live in a world where there is a pill for just about everything. We take poor care of our own body and seek some quick and easy fix when things go wrong. When we have a headache, we take an aspirin to dull the pain. If we have a cold, we take a cough syrup to lessen the cough and a decongestant to rid us of the stuffy head. When we have heartburn we take an antacid to reduce the pain and discomfort.
They can fool people into believing their bodies are functioning just fine. This causes them to no longer be aware of warning signals their bodies are giving them. Kind of like putting tape over the “check engine” light in your car—it didn’t fix the problem, but it did mask the warning signal. Drugs also work by fooling the natural adapting and healing mechanisms of the body into thinking everything is fine. For example, many people think that a fever is a bad thing; a sick response. They immediately take a drug to bring the fever down. But the fever is, in fact, a good thing and a healthy response because it raises your body temperature to fight foreign invaders and kill them off. If you take a drug to bring the fever down, you are really just tricking your body into thinking everything is just fine and then the sickness typically lasts longer, and can cause other complications, than if you didn’t take the drug and just let your body heal naturally. I am not saying drugs are not always necessary, like in emergency situations, of course! We could take a different route. While traditional medical care seeks to alleviate symptoms, chiropractic care seeks to restore the body’s natural ability to be whole. By making sure the nerve system is functioning properly, the chiropractor helps your body heal itself without the use of drugs and all their side effects! Chiropractic is not magic—we don’t try to fool or control anything. This family event included kids’ entertainment and raffle items from more than 65 local businesses. The Empire State Aerosciences Museum (ESAM – 250 Rudy Chase Dr, Glenville, (518) 377-2191, esam.org) dedicated their new model of the Concorde with much fanfare on October 20. This long-awaited attraction is a model replica of the Concorde, a supersonic passenger airliner that was operated from 1976 until 2003. The Concorde was famous for flying from New York to London in just three hours and at twice the speed of sound. Back in 1987, a real Concorde flew into the Schenectady County Airport for an air show. Peter Russo and the ESAM Board received an Empire Award from Senator Jim Tedisco to celebrate this great new attraction.

So you’re going to grow some Houseplants? Awesome! Select the right plants for your space. Since you’ll be growing indoors, it’s important to consider the conditions of your window space. You will want to think about how much light the plants will get, the temperature of the room, how big the plants will grow and how long it will take for them to reach maturity. Each room can be a sanctuary for a different plant. Aloe, Christmas Cactus (Thanksgiving Cactus) Cane plants, Jade, Snake plants, and Pothos are pretty much fool proof as long as you have some light. Get to know what your plants like. All plants have evolved to deal with certain sets of conditions that have to do with temperature, light, water, and nutrient availability (to name just a few). Every plant needs sunlight, water, and nutrients, but they may need them in different quantities. Get to know the specific requirements of the plant(s) you have. It’s super important to read the instructions on the tag that your plant comes with. How often should you water? Watering frequency of indoor plants depends on the type of plants you have! Generally speaking, most gardening experts suggest you water houseplants once a week. Even desert plants like cacti need frequent watering but they can obviously go a bit longe. Most houseplants thrive in a temperature range of 65º – 75º F, your humidity level dictates the

Fertilize your plants regularly, but not too much. Plants do photosynthesis to make their own food, by converting carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air to sugars. However, they need other nutrients to grow and thrive. 1-3 months. Generally speaking, it’s better to under-fertilize rather than over-fertilize your plants, so don’t too it too often. Plan to re-pot your plant at some point. Re-potting plants usually involves moving them from one pot to another with new soil. Usually, the new pot is larger, giving the plant room to grow. New soil will have more nutrients than the old soil. Know how much sun your plants need. This is a really big deal where we live. Different houseplants have different sunlight requirements, depending on where they evolved to grow. Some plants need a lot of sunlight, and others need less. If a plant requires direct sunlight, they need about 6 hours of sun per day, right in the window. If it requires moderate sunlight, there should be 4 hours of direct sun per day. Indirect sunlight means the plant should be kept a few feet away from a window all the time. Check to see how much sunlight your indoor plants need, and place them accordingly in your home or office. Once Upon a Time: A George H. Shorey Artist Studio

It happened upon one day wandering on and around different roads while out and about in Burnt Hills, a Storybook Cottage stood back in the woods on a clear wooded winter day. I had to stop with fascination, to take phone photos and find out why this, obviously old, Tutor style structure is in existence. It stands
in time with a wreath on the door. Someone owns this and they care. Off to inquire, I started with one of my photos sent to the Town

Historian via email. His prompt reply sent me in numerous directions for research. Gasp! An artist studio! And a known artist! Still, family owned through generations and standing! Well, as I stated, this information only scratched the surface of my curiosity. It had me in a knee deep flood of questions; anxious about discovering more. Who was George? What works came out of this inspirational building and where are they? Where did George go and what did he do? What is the future of this structure?
The Building: The property has been proudly and currently still owned by the Shorey family for more than seven generations. It so happens, the current subject structure is a second rebuild of George’s original 1905 studio. The first studio was torn down and rebuilt to accommodate George Shorey’s art students in 1912. A fire destroyed the studio and it was once again rebuilt in 1914 by the artist and his son, James where it stands today. (1) The stucco walls were constructed by hand with cement and chicken wire. carved. The wrought iron hinges and other metal works were made by a local metal craftsman and blacksmith, Fred Gillingham. The second story window near the chimney was noted by Mrs. Shorey during that interview as “the Juliet” window. However, Mr. Shorey claimed that his father named it “the Romeo” window. The slight humorous conflict was left just as that as the interview continued. At such time, there were leaded windows, now vandalized and gone, that were gathered from a New York City mansion demolition. George purchased a Model T Ford truck to bring his re-purposing treasures home to the Burnt
Hills Studio that was in progress. (1) What a pleasant discovery for me to find that George participated in up-cycling in the early 1900’s. Don’t you love that? The studio, still erect, is in complete disuse. Vandalized, but not forgotten. During an interview with Wendy Presseisen in 2008, she was told by George’s grandson, that the building will be restored. (3) I can only hope so and envision it in it’s original state, adorned with an easel, art supplies and sculptures as a museum of the Shorey husband and wife team. The building is an icon of the community and if anything, drawing attention and respect for what it once was.
The Artist: George H. Shorey was born September 9, 1870 in Hoosick Falls, New York. Son of Thomas H. and Euphemia S. Shorey. He studied
under Walter Shirlaw and was best known for his etchings, oils and art instruction. He was also successful with other arts involving numerous published written materials, play writing, music and sculpting. He has been claimed to be an exceptional violinist. George married Mary R. Jones in 1896 (4) , descendant to own the 1792 homestead property erected in 1793. Mary was born March 12, 1865 in Chicago, Illinois. She, herself, was a teacher and sculptress. (1) (5) She studied sculpture in New York City and that is where she met George. As I searched for George H. Shorey, I found him to be famed primarily for his etching art but he was multi-talented while creating and writing in New York City where he held a studio. He also resided in Grantwood, New Jersey. George and his wife summered at the family home and studio in Burnt Hills where they later retired. Some of his paintings and etchings were inspired from Vermont and New Hampshire landscapes. Published works included numerous reviews. He wrote for Harpers, New York Times* and other newspapers and magazines. His art exhibitions reached as far as The Art Institute of Chicago and he has been referenced in, at least ten, Art based books. (6)
Continuing my search for George’s art, I was pleased to find his prints are tucked into numerous Auctions. George died after a brief illness at the Bell Nursing Home, Schenectady on June 20, 1944. (7) His wife, Mary, died shortly after his death, on September 26, 1944. (4) Both are buried at Burnt Hills Calvary Episcopal Church Cemetery. (8) From what I’ve gathered about a storybook cottage and a talented man, I can only imagine the passion for life and art that intertwined the lives of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Shorey. The love they had for the arts and for each other were creations they shared not only among them, but for the rest of the world to acknowledge. It would be fitting if this structure became a monument to embark their life long works to be respected and admired. Especially the replacement of the Romeo/Juliet window. Now that, my friends, would be a happily ever after.

Instant Pot Chili • 1 1/2 Pounds Ground Beef • 1 Can (15 ounces) Kidney Beans, drained • 1 Can (15 ounces) Pinto beans, drained • 1 Can (15 ounces) Black beans, drained • 1 Can (15 ounces) Fire Roasted diced tomatoes with juice • 1 Can (6 ounce) Tomato paste • 1 large sweet onion, chopped • 1 Red bell pepper, seeded and chopped • 1 Jalapeño, seeded and minced *optional • 2 Cups Beef stock • 1 Tablespoon Dried oregano • 2 Teaspoons ground cumin • 2 Teaspoons Kosher salt • 1 Teaspoon ground black pepper • 1 Teaspoon Smoked Paprika • 2 Tablespoons chili powder • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 1 Tablespoon Minced garlic For Garnish: Sour Cream, Cilantro and shredded Cheese 1. Turn your instant pot to sauté the onions and peppers and cook until tender. 2. Add the meat and cook until browned. 3. Drain off any excess grease, we just tilt the pot and use a large spoon. 4. Add all of the remaining ingredients and to combine. 5. Turn the instant pot to chili and cook for 18-20 minutes*. Allow pressure to release for 10-15 minutes or quick release with the vent. 6. Serve with limes, sour cream, cheese

Holiday Pine Cone Cheese Ball Looking for an appetizer to impress your guests for the holidays? This Holiday Pine Cone Cheese Ball tastes as great as it looks, adorned with whole almonds, this appetizer cheese ball actually resembles a pinecone and taste just like the creamy cheese you crave. Serve this festive dish at your next holiday party with assorted cracker, tortilla chips, or toasted bread points. • 1 (8-ounce) package soft cream cheese • ½ cup 1/2 cup dried cranberries • ¼ cup 1/4 cup pecans, chopped • 1 tablespoon Port wine • Salt and black pepper, to taste • Crackers, for serving (recipes is gluten free if you use GF crackers) • Maple syrup, for serving, optional • 1 ¼ cups whole almonds • 2 sprigs rosemary
1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. 2. Stuff each date with 1 to 2 almonds. 3. Wrap each date with half a piece of bacon and secure with a toothpick. 4. Bake, turning the dates halfway through so the bacon is evenly cooked, 15 to 18 minutes. 5. Serve warm or at room temperature
1. Lightly toast the almonds and allow to cool down while you make the cheese filling. 2. In a food processor, blend together cream cheese, port wine, cranberries, chopped pecans, salt to taste, and pepper to taste. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour. 3. Shape the cheese mixture into 2 oval-shaped balls lightly flatten. Arrange them on a surface covered with parchment. 4. Starting at the narrow end, place almonds into the cheese at a slight angle, until fully covered. Top with a rosemary sprig, serve with crackers and drizzle with maple syrup if you like.
Wiggle Room: So many ideas! Drizzle with fudge sauce, use jalapeno bacon, put cream cheese inside the dates. Have fun with the flavors!

Most charitable organizations are honest and dedicated to helping their specific causes. But sometimes there are a few “bad apples” in the bunch. These groups aren’t necessarily fraudulent (though some are), but they may spend an inordinate amount of their donations on administrative expenses, rather than directing this money to where it’s most needed. Fortunately, you don’t have to guess about the trustworthiness or the efficiency of a particular group, because you can check on it. To make sure that a charity is an actual charity – one that is tax-exempt and listed as a 501(c)(3) organization – you can go to www.irs.gov, the website of the Internal Revenue Service, and hit the “Charities & Nonprofits” link. An organization called Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org) tracks charitable groups’ financial health and accountability, including how much is spent on administrative and fundraising costs. Generally speaking, a charitable group that dedicates more than about 30% to 35% of its total costs to administration and fundraising expenses might be considered somewhat inefficient, though you’d want to evaluate each charity individually, since extenuating circumstances can occur. Keep in mind, though, that smaller charities may not have the same resources as a national organization to provide the reporting necessary for Charity Navigator. Will my employer match my contribution? You can make your charitable gift go a lot further if your employer matches it. Typically, companies match donations at a 1:1 ratio, but some will match at 2:1 or even higher. Check with your human resources department about your company’s policy on charitable matches.

Are my charitable gifts tax deductible? A few years ago, Congress significantly raised the standard deduction, which, for the 2021 tax year, is now $12,550 for single taxpayers, $25,100 for joint filers and $18,800 for heads of household. As a result of this increase, many people no longer itemize and thus have less financial incentive to make charitable contributions. If you still do itemize and you’re thinking of making charitable gifts, you generally have a choice between giving cash and another asset such as stocks. Each type of gift could earn you a tax deduction, but a gift of appreciated stocks could be more beneficial because you may also be avoiding the capital gains tax you might incur if you eventually sold the stocks. You should consult with your tax advisor and the charity (not all accept investments) before making the cashversus-stock decision. Even if you don’t itemize, you could still get a tax benefit from making a charitable contribution. That’s because Congress has extended part of the COVID-19-related legislation that allows taxpayers to claim charitable deductions of $300 (for single filers) or $600 (for married couples) if they claim the standard deduction. The charitable donations must be made in cash, not stocks. Your gifts can have lasting benefits. So, be as generous as you can afford – and enjoy the good feelings that follow.
