All of the available additives have been carefully selected to offer the opportunity to target a wide range of situations that may need additional nutritional support. When exploring which additives may benefit the flock, it is important to take into consideration the following: • Flock age • Parasites • Disease • Production system • Environmental pressure • Health • Stress • Target egg market • Breed Parasite control in poultry is paramount in ensuring a healthy and productive flock. SUPPLEMENTS POULTRY GRIT

A varied and balanced diet is essential for poultry, as is providing the correct supplements. In order to digest their food correctly, poultry require fine, insoluble grit. Grit is important for many things such as aiding digestion, improving eggshell strength, improving bone strength and to help combat feather pecking. Oyster shell dissolves in the gut and adds calcium to the diet of laying hens. If sufficient calcium isn’t available, hens can lay soft or poor quality shelled eggs. Hens in active lay use four times as much calcium as a non-laying hen. Mixed Poultry Grit 25kg

SUPPLEMENTS VILOFOSS® PECKStone is an easy, effective, inexpensive and safe QS-capable feed for animal welfare. The selected composition and structure guarantees a high level of acceptance by poultry and gives the possibility of an individual additional intake of Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium and trace elements. Thus, a healthy metabolism is supported and also the bone structure and plumage is improved. Behavioural disorders such as feather pecking and cannibalism are effectively restricted and prevented. At the same time, the beaks are worn by the PECKStone which significantly reduces the risk of injury when animals peck each other. Different hardness grades enables adaption to the activity and age of the poultry. May be used in organic production in accordance with Regulations (EC) No 834/2007 and (EC) No 889/2008’.

PECKSTONE BLOCK HARD

PECKSTONE BLOCK EXTRA HARD For poultry stocks and laying hens; can also be used to provide additional enrichment to turkeys. Recommended use: for tough demands as well as parent poultry; at fattening stage hang at activity height (hanger element can be ordered separately) Depending on the consumption, use one PECKStone for 500 to 800 animals.

The most used stone, standard for pullets and laying hens. Recommended use: for layers the PECKStone can be supported by placing it on the upturned bowl. Depending upon the consumption, use one PECKStone for 500 to 800 animals.

VERSATILE ADVANTAGE OF VILOFOSS® PECKSTONE:

• ensures active pre-occupation of animals through material wear • enables natural behaviour during the search for food and consumption • promotes activity and mobility of the animal • reduces stress-initiating interactions between animals • prevents the occurrence of feather pecking and cannibalism • the additional intake of magnesium and sodium calms the animals and prevents behavioural disorders • the mineral component supports natural beak wear because of its well wear effect • easy and clean handling The PECKStone should be set up and stored in a covered area. The stones can be left in the bowl, plunged from the bowl and placed directly on the floor or on top of the upturned bowl. Hanging is also possible, which is especially interesting for turkey husbandry (for this purpose, a special hanging element has been developed which is also available separately).

HYGIENE Poultry can be affected by a variety of diseases and parasites, but by introducing and maintaining biosecurity measures, you can help prevent the spread of diseases. Poultry farmers can increase the biosecurity of flocks through standard control measures, such as washing hands after handling birds, ensuring equipment, vehicles, clothing and footwear is cleaned and disinfected before and after contact with poultry and disinfecting boots when travelling between farms. Daily inspection of poultry by trained staff, in good lighting conditions, is a good method of preventing serious outbreaks of disease. Inspections will enable you to detect early signs of disease simply by noting changes in the behaviour and condition of individual birds.

HYGIENE PROTOCOL CLEANING ANIMAL HOUSES

18

STEP 1

STEP 2

Manure and litter should be removed from the barn, and if possible, immediately transported outside the farm site.

Clean inside the water system.

STEP 3

STEP 4

Soak with water and remove most of the dirt. Soaking with water for 4-6 hours will improve the cleaning results.

Using detergent, clean the ventilation fans and air inlets.

STEP 5

STEP 6

Using detergent, clean the ceilings. The first thing that must be cleaned inside the barn is the ceiling and the ventilation shafts. If this is not done first, the dirt can recontaminate other parts of the building.

Using detergent, clean the outside of the feeding and water system. Feeding pans should be dismantled and cleaned properly to remove all the residues of feed and organic matter.

www.wynnstay.co.uk

HYGIENE PROTOCOL

STEP 7

STEP 8

Using detergent, clean the floor and walls.

Rinse all surfaces with clean water, remove excess water and let dry.

DISINFECTING ANIMAL HOUSES A good disinfection starts with a well-cleaned and dry animal house.

STEP 1

STEP 2

Spraying or foaming.

Close the animal house completely. Make sure that nobody is left in the house.

STEP 3

STEP 4

Fogging: Leave the house closed for 24 hours.

Ventilate the house to refresh the air, before bringing animals in.

POULTRY HYGIENE

AVIAN INFLUENZA BIOSECURITY

DO YOU KEEP CHICKENS, TURKEYS, DUCKS, GEESE?

Your birds are always at risk of bird flu in the UK from wild birds. Avian Infulenza is a highly contagious disease but action can be taken to protect your birds from contracting it.

HOW DOES IT SPREAD?

REMEMBER

Bird-to-bird by direct contact or through contaminated body fluids and faeces. It can also be spread through contaminated feed and water or by dirty vehicles, clothing and footwear.

If you see any behavioural changes such as a drop in egg laying, very sick birds or an increasing number of unexplained deaths, get in contact with your vet.

HOW TO SPOT POSSIBLE SIGNS OF AVIAN INFLUENZA Respiratory distress such as gaping beak, coughing, sneezing, gurgling, rattling

PROTECT YOUR BIRDS CLEANING

Clean all footwear, clothing and equipment thoroughly before and after contact with your birds. Ensuring all areas are clean, tidy and disinfected will reduce the risk of transmitting disease.

Swollen head Increased mortality

FEEDING

Blue discolouration of neck and throat

Feed and water should be placed in fully enclosed areas to prevent wild birds from accessing it and transmitting disease.

Loss of appetite

SEPARATION Fewer eggs laid Diarrhoea

Housing should be considered as an option, especially when the risk of disease is heightened. Should your birds be kept outside, netting can help protect your birds from direct contact with potentially contaminated wild birds in outdoor areas.

STAY AWARE

Further information on Avian Influenza can be found on the Welsh Government website: http://gov.wales/topics/environmentcountryside/ahw/disease/avianflu

0808 168 7998

All poultry keepers, including those with fewer than 50 birds, are encouraged to provide details of their flocks to the Poultry Register. This will ensure that you can be contacted immediately in an avian disease outbreak so that you can take action to protect your birds at the earliest opportunity. Find information of how to register your birds on: www.gov.uk/guidance/poultry-registration or by calling 0800 634 1112 poultry@wynnstay.co.uk You can also register with the APHA alerts service to get email and text alerts about exotic notifiable animal disease outbreaks http://animalhealth.system-message.co.uk/AH_subscribe_index.php.

PEST CONTROL Wynnstay supply a range of products to help reduce and control pests. Pests such as wild birds, rodents, and insects can carry Avian Influenza (AI) onto a housing site. Biosecurity measures can help keep pests out and ensure the health of the birds on a site. Good biosecurity is extremely important to prevent the introduction of a wide range of micro-organisms into poultry farms. Site design and management practices should be planned to facilitate this. On free-range farms, foxes and other small mammals, as well as wild birds, may be carriers of Salmonella and these should also be deterred. Rats and mice have a role in the spread of diseases through stored produce and animal feed; rodent urine and faeces may transmit diseases to both humans and livestock. Under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act, farmers must keep fly and rodent infestations under control, otherwise they could be fined up to £20,000 or face a custodial sentence. Rodent habitats should be eliminated by keeping the premises in a tidy manner. A planned programme of baiting and/or trapping in and around buildings and the site perimeter should be undertaken. This programme should be intensified during periods when houses are empty and if rodents, droppings, tracks, chewing damage or disturbed bait are seen. Disease outbreaks among farm animals can cause significant economic damage. However, you can limit the impact through preventative and control measures.

RED MITE CONTROL MITEX

Control of red mite in poultry is critical as even relatively small mite populations can have a significant impact on bird welfare and operation productivity.

1. 2.

An effective drying agent, with microscopic sharp edges and a high oil binding capacity which attaches to and lacerates the waxy surface of insects causing desiccation.

Red mite powders and liquids are effective repellent combinations to be applied to poultry as a proactive on-bird deterrent to infestation or to rectify an existing problem The best time to treat the birds is during the evening, because red mite are nocturnal and so feed on the birds as they roost at night

3.

Do not apply to birds under seven days old, and apply sparingly to small birds

4.

A red mite infestation may cause eggs to be stained red with crushed mites or mite faeces, a decrease in egg production or pale coloured yokes

5.

The risks of red mite infestation can be reduced by a complete and effective farm hygiene programme

• Kills insects without the need for chemical pesticides • It is an effective drying agent and can be dusted in critical areas on the farm • Mild and un-abrasive treatment which can be used in a chemicalfree management system. Non-toxic to animals and humans Mitex 20kg

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Selecting the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential for a demanding job in an agricultural environment, in order to protect the user against health or safety risks at work. PPE can include items such as gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing and safety footwear. We offer a full range of PPE, including waterproof clothing, alongside a fit for purpose range of footwear including PU/rubber wellingtons and safety dealer boots; please make sure that you consider the size, fit and weight of the PPE for each user. Never allow those jobs that “only take a few minutes” to become an exemption from wearing PPE. PPE must be properly looked after and stored when not in use. If it is reusable, it must be cleaned and kept in good condition.

The Law The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 2002 and the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended) give the main requirements. Seek further advice from: www.hse.gov.uk

FENCING AND HARDWARE

Poultry Fencing is a fundamental requirement to keeping poultry, not only to reduce the risk of losing bird but also the potential financial loss. Poultry Fencing can be referred to as netting or fencing but the same elements apply, ultimately to effectively deter predators and keep your poultry in. Poultry Fencing can be used in conjunction with off-set Electric Wire Fencing, which does require maintenance, especially during the summer months, but once installed it should give years of protection. Hardware offers the essential equipment and supplies required on farm, whether it be for biosecurity, feed storage, water harvesting or general maintenance and accessories, to feeding units, chick paper and egg boxes.

FENCING WIRE NETTING Tornado Poultry Fencing is a lightweight net fence designed to fulfil very specific requirements for free-range poultry farmers. It keeps chickens in, while effectively deterring predators. Tornado Poultry Fencing is manufactured with high tensile wire which strains tighter than mild steel and so requires fewer intermediate posts, making it quicker to erect. It does not stretch with weathering so does not need to be retightened annually. • Number of line wires: 8 • Distance between vertical wires: 8cm • Overall height: 158cm • Roll length: 50m • Top and bottom line wire specification: 2mm diameter – 1100-1250 N/mm2 • Intermediate line wire specification: 2mm diameter – 1100-1250 N/mm2 • Vertical wire specification: 2mm diameter – 695-850 N/mm2 Compliance with British and European Standards

BSEN 10218 – Steel Wire and Wire Products part 2 – General Wire Dimensions and Tolerances. FENCING ELECTRIC FENCING Electric fencing for poultry is an effective method of containing both domestic and commercially kept chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese, and can also be a big deterrent to predators such as foxes. For large commercial flocks, nets are ideal as an inner fence or sub-division to contain poultry. Where predators are likely to be a problem, a more secure boundary is desirable. Only horizontal wires of nets are electrified and the bottom wire, which usually rests on the ground, is not electrified to avoid shorting the fence to the earth. For relatively small areas of domestic poultry, where flocks are kept indoors overnight (so risk of predator attack is small), Rutland poultry nets are easy to erect and move. With a suitable energiser, they will contain non-flying poultry effectively.

FLOCK CARE

Having made the decision to farm poultry, the ultimate care needs to be taken to protect your flock and maximise your return on investment. We feel it is important to include here the notable schemes and key bodies within the poultry industry to assist you with your planning, training and safe food production. Once such key body is illustrated by The Lion Code of Practice, designed to designed to provide consumers with eggs of the highest quality and safety. The Lion Code is a living document and is revised regularly to take account of new scientific or practical knowledge, and of consumer demands. This seventh complete version incorporates further improvements to the sixth version. In short, The Lion Code has been developed to provide an approved scheme for the production of eggs to standards above and beyond those set by EU and UK law, at all times realising the importance of providing a safe food product of the highest quality, whilst maintaining the highest possible welfare standards and environmental control. In many areas it raises standards above the legal minimum.

FLOCK CARE

Farm Assurance Schemes

57

FLOCK CARE REGISTRATION AND FARM ASSURANCE SCHEMES The Registration of Establishments (Laying Hens) Regulations 2003 require all laying hen establishments with 350 or more laying hens to be registered with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA). Once registered a unique code is issued that must be stamped on every egg sold. The code identifies the country of origin, production method and farm. For example: A free range farm will have a code similar to 1UK12345. • The 1 indicates free range • UK indicates origin • 12345 identifies the farm The egg marketing inspector will visit the unit randomly and inspect that all operations are adhering to the rules set out by DEFRA/APHA in regards to; salmonella control, production processes, hen welfare and general operations. More information can be found at: www.gov.uk/guidance/eggs-trade-regulations

British Lion Code of Practice The Code of Practice contains more than 700 auditable criteria and sets stringent requirements throughout the production chain to ensure quality, freshness and the highest standards of food safety. On farm this requires the set code of conduct to be followed to the full. This can cover everything from where the pullets are sourced, hen welfare, egg storage, use of chemicals and pest control. Audits are carried out annually on farm by a representative from BEIC. More information can be found at: www.britisheggindustrycouncil.co.uk/british-lion-code-of-practice

RSPCA Assured RSPCA Assured is the RSPCA’s farm assurance and food labelling scheme. RSPCA Assured assesses and approves farms, hauliers and abattoirs that meet all of the applicable RSPCA welfare standards. Products from animals reared under the RSPCA Assured scheme can be labelled with the scheme’s food label: ‘RSPCA Assured’. Membership of the scheme is subject to an annual fee and successful assessment, as well as monitoring visits by Farm Livestock Officers from the RSPCA’s Farm Animals Department. More information can be found at: www.science.rspca.org.uk/sciencegroup/farmanimals/standards/layinghens

FLOCK CARE EGG SUPPLY AGREEMENT AND CONTRACTS There are many types of egg supply agreements and contracts available. The type of agreement or contract will depend on the intended market, breed of bird and packer/supermarket contract. Once eggs are collected from the farm they are delivered to a packing station, where they are graded by sophisticated and automated equipment. The terms of the contract can vary and may include further integration, such as pullets and feed supply. We would always recommend reading the proposed agreement or contract very carefully to ensure that it is best suited for your business.

Feed Tracker Contract – The egg price fluctuates with world feed prices. There will be a fixed base price for the egg and normally with every £10 +/- movement in feed price the egg price will move +/- 2p. Scheme Contract – This is where the producer is contracted to a company that will be the sole supplier of pullets and feed and then sell the eggs on your behalf..

In todays free range egg industry it is more important than ever that the industry continues to work every day to push forward with bird welfare beyond consumer expectations. Egg packers will expect that you work closely with them and their farming partners to ensure the highest possible standards are achieved.

Egg Contract Types: All Egg Contract – The producer is paid a flat rate for every egg supplied for the total flock or fixed period. Graded Contract – This is the most common type of contract. The producer is paid a rate depending on the size and condition of the egg.

PULLET FINANCE Wynnstay offer a pullet finance service to our feed customers, subject to terms and conditions. The service is specifically designed for the finance amount to reduce over six flocks. An example of the plan is below: Flock Number

Percent on Finance

Flock 1

100%

Flock 2

80%

Flock 3

60%

Flock 4

40%

Flock 5

20%

Flock 6

0%

This plan is flexible, so the exact finance option can be adjusted. For example, there is no issue if after the third flock the customer no longer wishes to take pullet finance on the next flock. The repayment of the pullets has been uniquely designed around the production cycle so that the flock is fully paid for within the flock. These repayments are delayed for the start of the flock so that no repayment is taken until there is egg production. There are nine repayments, which then allows the final stage of the flock to be free of any repayment. It is important to note that the pullet finance scheme is only available to Wynnstay poultry feed customers and is negotiated on a flock by flock basis.

If you would like to find out more about Wynnstay pullet finance, please contact the poultry team.
