INTRODUCING AUTUMN SEEDS 2022 I’m excited for autumn 2022 drilling because we have some of the most exciting technologies to offer Wynnstay customers that we’ve seen for years. We also have strong grain prices, and the Wynnstay Arable Event is back! Now it hasn’t and won’t all be level ploughing. We continue to see a shift in our climate and seasonality, making us all rethink our production to meet the milder winters and wetter summers. The war in Eastern Europe will limit the amount of grain and oil coming out of the region, reduce new plantings, forcing prices up and causing world-wide anxiety. Closer to home we’ve seen a 26% increase to crop protection products, three-fold increase in fertiliser inputs, and fuel costs have doubled as Red Diesel surpassed £1.37/lt. On a positive note, grain prices have hit record levels increasing 75% per tonne to +£300, farm gate milk value was up 24% over 2021, and red meat prices rose as much as 25%. Sale and purchase timing continues to be the maker and breaker but there are good profit opportunities out there for the smart farmers. Everyone knows the adage “buy cheap, buy twice” and this year that will be more applicable than ever. Hunting for that profit will take investment, but the returns are more than worth it. Even at today’s increased costs, the average UK wheat yield (8.3t/ha) will return a £1,000/ha margin for the grower. This won’t come without investment but those diligent farms that use the correct technology at the right times will be the winners. Certified Seed accounts for only 3% of the total cost per hectare, yet the impact of that seed technology choice is the fundamental driver to a successful return. Certified seed is grown and processed under stringent production requirements with strict limits on weeds and other species. Quality management maximises varietal purity making sure you get the variety you want. Many end-users require specific varieties for their products - using Certified seed can open the door to new opportunities and greater sales by providing officially recognised proof of your parent seed. Improved traits such as resistances to BYDV, TuYV, OWBM (too many acronyms I know!) are delivered to farmers in Certified seed. Years of research and development went into these traits and they can only be reliably accessed through Certified seed. Maximising output - you want the best genetics and the cleanest fields to ensure you are making the most of your investment. Planting Certified seed means you’re not wasting time, and the other inputs required for modern crop production, on seed that won’t reliably produce a top crop. Wynnstay has recently invested in new technology which will further improve our customer’s crop outputs. A new seed cleaning Optical Sorter at Astley has full colour and shape recognition technology, which will be able to remove more contaminants than ever from seeds. We have two biostimulant field trials in Shropshire and Herefordshire – assessing and demonstrating the latest treatments to give faster emergence, stronger tillering, and ultimately more yield. Complimenting the treatment trials, Wynnstay is also demonstrating the newest hybrid rye, triticale and barley for home grown forage. In South Wales the team have invested in grazing and silage cut trials on these species to understand and advise on the best output for farmers. Delving into the species and varieties further, one can’t help but be excited by the oilseed rape market. Good strong crops using the latest in certified seed technology, established well, fought off the worst of the CSFB pressure and are now looking favourable for harvest. Varieties like LG Avrion with consistent yields, thick stems, and 8 LLS resistance will be the main stay for successful farmers. In the winter wheat market, there have been advances in yield, quality,

and agronomics – new varieties such as RGT Stokes, Champion and KWS Dawsum offer the grower more than ever. Winter barley goes from strength to strength as conventional breeding now equals the hybrid breeding for yield – KWS Tardis and Bolton - however knowing where hybrid barley’s like SY Kingsbarn best utilise more marginal situations and suppress grass weeds, will be just as valuable as yield. More than ever diversity in the crop rotation has been highlighted, and soil improvement will be toward the top of everyone’s agenda. Pulses have well known benefits to following cereals and many have achieved good results with peas and beans in 2021, and with consumers pressuring supply chains to find local alternatives to imported commodities, beans are viable options with their end uses and environmental benefits. Oats have a growing market on their side but only spring crops fit grass-weed situations and spring varieties are less favoured by the end user, so a judgement call on the miller contract vs agronomic pressure must be taken farm by farm. Linseed will inevitably spark interest again, with some trying winter crops as a direct replacement for oilseed rape with early sowing and harvesting. Other options might exist in mixed farming areas with forage crops and/or re-introducing livestock and grassland. To that point Wynnstay has designed a portfolio of autumn crops to help our farm customers meet the needs of end users and overcome any economic, environmental, and agronomic challenges they face on farm. WINTER WHEAT UKFM GROUP 1 – BREADMAKING WHEAT KWS ZYATT

The highest yielding Group 1 milling wheat with reliable Hagberg and excellent specific weight, Zyatt has continued demand from millers and bakers. Best on heavier soils, a good second wheat and suitable for later drilling. Reasonably stiff and medium maturity. Yellow rust is the variety’s weakness, however with Septoria tritici and brown rust resistance at 6, the opportunities for the crop in millling market outweigh the weakness. The variety has an erect growth habit and open canopy, so avoid black-grass situations, but matures evenly making it easy to combine.

The only Group 1 milling wheat with OWBM resistance, Skyfall is grown specifically for its agronomics. A medium-fast developing variety, with extremely low vernalisation requirement, Skyfall should be sown from late September to the end of February. It is still yielding strongly in comparison with other milling varieties coupled with stiff straw, but be aware the yellow rust resistance is low and robust spring fungicde programme required.

Crusoe is universally accepted by millers, bakers and growers as being Mildew a solid Group 1 which also meets export specifications, and last year’s Yellow rust harvest results confirm its position as one of the most consistent Group Brown rust 1 milling varieties. A moderate to high tillering capacity and semi-erect Septoria tritici Eyespot growth habit that is moderately competitive against grass weeds. Short Fusarium and relatively stiff straw with the very characteristic ‘wax-less’ appearance, Resistance to lodging (+PGR) it is well suited to heavy fertile soils. Good resistance to yellow rust and Resistance to lodging (-PGR) septoria, it is brown rust that must be monitored and treated for accordingly in summer. Medium/fast in its speed of development it is best drilled 20th September - 20th October.

It is RGT Illustrious’ “Hereward-like” quality and consistent performance over several very different growing seasons that has proved attractive among end users, and the variety delivers excellent baking performance even at lower protein levels. Suited to the East and West regions, as far as Yorkshire, but its field performance drops away any further North. Best suited to first wheat fields and heavier soils, with medium tillering capacity Illustrious can be moderately competitive in grass weed situations. The best-combined disease resistance package of all Group 1 Milling wheat, it boasts the best-untreated yield (81%).

A market dominating variety which proved hugely popular in 2021 and Mildew will be again in 2022. It is a medium-tall variety with stiff straw and good Yellow rust resistance to lodging in the absence of plant growth regulator. Data shows Brown rust Extase matures early (2 days earlier than Skyfall), and as such care must Septoria tritici be taken in planning sowing to make the biggest advantage of earliness. Eyespot We recommend sowing from 1st October. Extase has also shown to be Fusarium competitive against blackgrass due to its fantastic autumn vigour. One of Resistance to lodging (+PGR) the best-combined disease resistance profiles, Septoria is still at 7.8 in a Resistance to lodging (-PGR) high-pressure year. Yellow rust must be watched and resistances move fast so we recommend a robust spring programme to keep that up.

A trusted variety that continues to produce on farm, Siskin is now entering its 9th year on the recommended list. Siskin won’t be a top yielder, but its solid disease package, early maturity and short straw will be of interest to farmers looking to harvest promptly on fertile ground. Suitable for later sowing, with a vigorous growth habit, it is very competitive in black grass situations.

Introduced last year, Astronomer combines one of the best agronomic packages with excellent grain quality. Accepted for the domestic biscuit market and now approved for distilling with a medium rating. This variety will flourish when sown on heavier ground, first or second wheat situation. Astronomer also benefits from a fantastic PGR application response equating to strong tall straw which should stand even in high fertile soils.

UKFM GROUP 4 – FEED WHEAT (SOFT) NEW RGT Bairstow is an exciting new addition to the RL for 2022. Proving to be a reliable yielder in the East/North with good success as a first and second wheat. Bairstow has an intermediate growth habit, and a moderate to fast speed of development. It’s in spring that the variety accelerates and is a very high tillering, with a leafy canopy and good-sized ears. It is slightly later maturing (+2) but has a good Hagberg and resistance to sprouting, ideal for risk mitigation in the later and wetter harvests. On disease resistance, Bairstow is a good “all-rounder” with a particularly robust 6.4 for Septoria and OWBM resistance.

A true growers variety, RGT Stokes is newly Recommended by AHDB as Mildew the second highest yielding variety in the Western region, and third in the Yellow rust North. With huge tillering capacity and big biomass, the variety is a mediumBrown rust developer in winter and then rockets in spring. Stokes is a tall variety with exceptional response to PGR applications, feed growers should be using Septoria tritici this wheat. Rated as ‘Good’ for its distilling quality too, it opens a wider Eyespot market for the North East. Good disease resistance package with Septoria Fusarium 6.9 and Yellow rust 7, the variety is capable on light and heavy soils, and Resistance to lodging (+PGR) yields well in the main and second wheat slots. Launch year and the seed Resistance to lodging (-PGR) will be in high demand.

Now cemented as a consistent performer, similarities can be drawn from Gleam, but Saki is noticeably stronger on yellow rust combined with OWBM resistance. It can be grown on both heavy and light soils and it is averageperforming second wheat. Best drilled from mid-September through to the end of December where it has been one of the highest yielding late-drill varieties in official trials.

Champion is the highest yielding variety in 2022/23 performing well across the UK, especially in the East and West. Extremely versatile, the variety grows well on heavy and light soil, however, its rapid and vigorous development means it’s better suited to late-main sowing windows (aim for late September - February). A robust disease package leads to an outstanding untreated yield of 90% allowing some flexibility on fungicide timings. Champion’s drawback is the low specific weight but any grain deductions are mitigated by the higher total yield. Champion has also shown good results in the second wheat slot, and in its’ launch year Champion supply will be tight so order early!

SY Insitor is a popular growers’ variety, you get out what you put into SY Insitor. Suitable for all regions and soil types with particularly good performance on lighter soils. Drill from mid-September to late October. A high specific weight (78.2kg/ hl), tall strong straw when managed correctly and good septoria resistance of 6.5, makes this variety a useful feed variety in the North and West. A weaker yellow rust resistance means it requires a robust spring fungicide programme, but as seen from the treated yields it can be overcome. A good partner with Champion and RGT Stokes.

The best variety for combined yield and grain quality, KWS Dawsum is the highest yielding variety in North and West RL Trials with a specific weight of 79.4 kg/hl attributed to its Costello parentage. A solid set of disease resistances with a 9 for yellow rust and 6.3 for septoria tritici means reliability whether treated or untreated. An erect growth habit, with high tillering capacity and medium stiff straw, Dawsum does offer some flexibility with its sowing window; we recommend September to mid October as a first wheat.

Most noticeable is in spring when other varieties are hungry and yellowing, Typhoon is green lush and hugging the floor. The variety has an erect growth habit, tillers well and develops fast so performs particularly well from 1st November onwards. Light free draining soils where root crops are often grown on is a strength, but it has proven itself on heavier soils too. KWS Cranium adds seedling and adult yellow rust resistance (8) to the hard Group 4 sector, as well as substantially stiffer straw than even the best varieties on the RL making KWS Cranium make a ‘no-brainer’ for late and post root growers.

Premio x Expert Graham, is our most popular winter wheat because of its consistency and high Western yields. It can be grown on heavy and lighter soil types, but it should always be grown as first wheat as its second wheat performance is relatively poor. Graham has a flexible sowing window; it has a relatively slow speed of development in the autumn so ideal for early-mid drilling, yet it moves relatively quickly in the spring. It has a prostrate autumn growth habit with medium to high tillering capacity, so seed rates can be reduced. We expect Graham to be hugely popular again this year.

Costello remains the one to beat for grain quality. The best specific weight and hagberg of any variety on the AHDB RL which will help keep grain quality high in a wet harvest. Agronomically Costello still has one of the most robust agronomic profiles; exceptionally strong tall straw, 8 for mildew and 9 for yellow rust. Watch for septoria in spring and treat accordingly. Costello is an ideal first wheat, best drilled from mid-September through to the end of December. On paper not the highest yielding, but in practice consistently yields with the best and could even see a small premium for milling grists.

The scale of yield loss from BYDV depends on aphid activity, presence and strain, growth stage at infection and environmental conditions. In the case of severe infections, BYDV can cause losses of up to 60% in winter wheat. Without ‘Deter’ seed treatments, the only protection grower have is in a BYDV resistance trait, allowing early drillers to mitigate the risk and costs. Professional growers will use RGT Wolverine. Best in the early drilling window. The variety will need a robust fungicide programme in spring but no more than Gleam or Insitor. Yellow Rust can be treated, BYDV can’t and it more than pays back.

BIPO SCHEME EXPLAINED The BIPO (Breeder’s Intellectual Property Office) scheme is an alternative royalty collection scheme to the standard BSPB method. Here the grower will pay the royalty element of their seed directly to BIPO rather than the price being included in certified seed purchased. It is also on an area basis rather than a tonnage basis. It is a simple process where growers register by going to www.bipo.org.uk and scroll over RAC Grower Agreement before selecting Create New RAC Grower Agreement. Once submitted you will receive a grower number and then will just have to quote this when ordering any varieties on this scheme such as Wolverine and Sensation (BYDV tolerant winter barley).

With its complete all-round package, KWS Hawking is a strong variety from a well-recognised and successful breeding programme. Stem strength is an area that varieties across the board have been a bit weaker on, something that serious growers are taking more seriously for its harvest and marketability. KWS Hawking has some of the strongest lodging a brackling resistances, particularly handy when its best situation is grown on heavy soils in the West and East.

Bolton is the high yielding 2-row winter feed barley for light to medium-light soils. It yields strongly in both East and West trials and commercial crops. With some of the lowest screening losses, Bolton’s bold grain is ideal for the feed market. In high pressure years rhynchosporium and net blotch will need to be watched, but medium tall straw responds well to PGRs making it a viable straw crop also.

More recently it is being outperformed in trials by new varieties, but in the right farm situation this variety is still delivering.

The highest yielding winter barley on the AHDB RL 2022/23. This variety has shown high yields in the West, especially strong on heavy land. WINTER BEANS Field beans are used for inclusion in animal feed, aquaculture and export for human consumption. There has been a rise in the growing of winter beans in the UK with the increased pressure on other break crops. Beans provide a useful break to reduce cereal pests and diseases and an opportunity to control grass weeds in the arable rotation. In wet years and on heavy soils, beans perform better than peas. Beans also suffer less from pigeon damage, they are easier to combine, and growing costs can sometimes be lower. Beans, however, are harvested later than peas, and time of harvest is very dependent on seasonal weather in the August/September period. Winter beans do not have a vernalisation requirement, although they are more winter hardy than spring types. In moisture-retentive and fertile fields that produce tall, lush crops short-strawed varieties could be an asset.

TRITICALE Triticale is a cereal crop, whose potential has not been realised in the UK. Elsewhere, particularly Poland, Germany and Sweden, it finds its place on the farm and market. Inherently, with a lower protein than wheat, triticale could have an important role in the emerging bioethanol market, where its growing cost efficiency will provide cost effective feedstock with excellent functionality. Varieties are now being grown as a crop for AD (Anaerobic Digestion) plants. Triticale is a more cost effective crop option and with early maturity and better autumn vigour it is attracting further interest for this use; particularly when growers are considering triticale after late foraged maize. Triticale produces grain with high lycine values and so is ideal for on-farm feeding. As a versatile crop, other uses of triticale include whole crop production, organic grain production, game cover and thatching.

HYBRID RYE Widely grown in northern Europe, hybrid rye is proving to be an increasingly popular choice for improving the performance of AD (Anaerobic Digestion) plants and now as a high yielding wholecrop for livestock production. With its huge yield potential, flexible drilling dates, vigorous growth habit and very early maturity, it provides growers with the opportunity for increased flexibility, in terms of the position of energy crops in their rotation.

Rye for biogas production Hybrid rye is an excellent crop to balance other high production substrates, such as beet or maize in the production of biogas in AD plants. The addition of hybrid rye to beet or maize provides a different nutrient source for the bacteria in the digester. This has a two-pronged synergistic effect; the hybrid rye increases methane yield due to a better balance of trace elements and a reduction in retention time in the digester. The usual ratio is 25% rye to 75% maize. Hybrid rye is also an excellent alternative to maize where the geography or soil types are not suitable for maize production. In such situations, hybrid rye and beet would make a good combination. Hybrid rye gives higher DM (dry matter) yields than triticale or wheat particularly on poor soils or in colder conditions.

Rotation Hybrid rye is an excellent crop for drought prone or lighter soils, as the crop has a deep root system and is a good scavenger for nutrients and water. Modern hybrid varieties are shorter and stiffer

than older conventional varieties and therefore, with an appropriate PGR programme, are suitable for a far wider range of soil types. Hybrid rye suffers less from eyespot than wheat. It is also useful in the control of blackgrass because, with the much greater height than wheat, far less blackgrass seeds are produced (viability is very low). Furthermore, an early July wholecrop harvest means the majority of blackgrass seeds will not have shed

Sowing Hybrid rye has a wide sowing window from mid-September through to late autumn. It is a particularly good crop for later sowing as it has a strong tillering capacity, with vigorous early spring growth. Seed rates should be based on time of drilling, along with seedbed, soil and moisture conditions; the below seed rates are a guide only. Seed is sold in unit packs of 12 million viable seeds per bag (approximately 0.5T). Sowing early at 200 seeds/m² equates to 2 million seeds/ha meaning a bag sows 6ha. October sowing at 240 seeds/m² uses 2.4million seeds/ha meaning a bag sows 5ha and late sowing at 260+ seeds/m² uses 2.6 million seeds/ha so one bag sows around 4.5ha.

Agronomy

Hybrid rye is a crop with good foliar disease resistance with the exception of brown rust. The vigorous crop growth gives excellent competition for weeds, resulting in much reduced herbicide use. Nitrogen levels will be approximately 150 kg/ha in addition to P and K, a single PGR application on lighter soils and usually a maximum of a single fungicide. For heavier land, a robust PGR programme is more appropriate, together with a 2nd or 3rd fungicide in situations of high disease pressure.

Harvesting and ensiling

The crop can be cut as early as ear emergence, like a green fodder rye, when the dry matter is about 20%. However, the most economical timing is at the milky ripe stage, when yields would have doubled and the DM increased to about 30-35%. Apart from barley, hybrid rye is much quicker in development than other cereal crops, including triticale, and the milky ripe growth stage will usually be around late June. This allows plenty of time for a catch crop, or even double cropping. Chop length at harvest should be 7-10mm with the addition of a preservative, such as lactic acid, when ensiling

Hybrid rye for wholecrop The species offers great potential as a wholecrop alternative within livestock enterprises. Whilst feeding data is relatively limited, the huge yields and rapid growth achieved could well replace other cereal wholecrops and even offer an alternative to forage maize in marginal situations. Opportunities for double cropping also exist as forage ‘catch crops’ can be sown early following a June harvest of hybrid rye. More information is needed on the feeding qualities of hybrid rye and we would be very keen to work with growers who would like to try the crop this autumn.

CROP MANAGEMENT Feeding high yielding varieties The 2021/22 AHDB Recommended List sees several high yielding varieties introduced in the wheat and barley groups. For maximum potential yield to be achieved, crops need to be provided with the correct balance of essential nutrients throughout the growing season.

Importance of a fertiliser plan An effective nutrient plan should consider current N, P and K levels. However, with considerable variation in nutrient levels between fields, soil testing is recommended to enable development of bespoke fertiliser plans. The results provide a soil index for that field, calculating the P, K and Mg levels on a mg/kg dry soil basis. Although a good starting point for forming a nutrition plan, there is a large variation in the nutrient levels within each soil index, as seen in table 1.

Soil test results could indicate a soil index of 2, but within this index there is a broad range in nutrient availability, so fields could still end up being deficient or even over supplied. Therefore, it is advised to look at the milligrams per litre in more detail and make necessary adjustments if required. It is important to note that unlike nitrogen, P and K doesn’t readily leach from the soil, so if over supplied for the current crop, reserves will be available and can result in improving the overall soil index if required.

Implementing a fertiliser plan The amount of P and K applied ahead of autumn drilling should consider the offtake required by the crop, along with the amount needed to maintain or build the soil to the ideal index level. Table 2 shows the amount of each nutrient which would be needed for winter wheat and winter barley crops, based on a yield potential of 8 T/ha. If a higher yield than expected has been achieved from the previous crop, or if a high yielding variety is going to be planted this year, the nutrition would need to be altered accordingly. Crops with a potential average yield of 8 T/ha could achieve 10 T/ ha if the weather conditions are favourable, but in achieving this, more P and K will be taken up, so soil reserves will need replenishing.

ON-FARM TRIALS CAN BOOST NITROGEN FERTILISER USE EFFICIENCY AND PROFIT MARGINS Nitrogen fertiliser Use Efficiency (NfUE) is the critical measure of how much of every kg of Nitrogen fertiliser you apply ends up in the plant where it can stimulate growth rather than getting lost from the system. If you want to know how effectively your Nitrogen fertilisers are being used you need to start by knowing what happens to your production if you don’t use any Nitrogen. CF is leading R&D to improve NfUE in arable crops CF Fertilisers is conducting a national trials programme involving 50 arable producers up and down the country is encouraging growers to leave just 4sq. metres away from the fertiliser spreader so they can get an accurate assessment of their NfUE. It’s expressed as a simple percentage with the higher the value, the more N is finding its way into plants and in a UK wheat crop it’s typically in the range of 50% to 80%. An NfUE of 50%, which does exist in some situations, means for every 1kg of Nitrogen you buy, half of it is effectively not being utilised and that’s a not a good result for the environment or the farm’s profitability. NfUE arable values <50% Poor 50-60% Fair 60-80% Good >80% Excellent CF N-Min tests proved fundamental to improve NfUE The ongoing trials programme represents some 20,000ha of UK wheat production across the country and the first year of trials has already shown some very interesting results. CF N-Min soil tests produced a level of accuracy approaching 80% whereas with estimates of Soil Mineral Nitrogen (SMN) this was just 45% and as low as 33% for RB209-based soil Nitrogen estimates. This accuracy of soil analysis combined with encouraging the growers taking part in the trials to adopt some basic Nitrogen management principles have translated into significant performance improvements (see table below). How to participate/conduct NfUE trials? At the optimum N application, we should be looking at the amount removed by the crop minus that would have been taken up if no Nitrogen fertiliser had been applied. This is where the 4sq.metres comes in. You can simply place a tarpaulin over your desired patch whenever fertiliser spreading takes place and this ensure your ‘Nil-N’ plot receives no fertiliser application through the season. The Nitrogen content of the harvested material from this plot can be analysed to compare that of the crop where the full application has been used and this can be used to calculate relative Nitrogen uptake by the crop and establish the NfUE. For further information on NfUE trials, please visit: https://www.cffertilisers.co.uk/nfue-trials/ Making the right fertiliser choices Ammonium Nitrate (AN) fertilisers such as Nitram, typically achieve the highest NfUE as they minimise loss of N to the atmosphere, Government commissioned trials which compared alternate sources of Nitrogen found that AN only lost 3% of Nitrogen as Ammonia to the atmosphere. DISEASE RESISTANCE Effective crop protection programmes for high yielding varieties When growing high yielding varieties, often other agronomic features such as disease resistance are sometimes overlooked. The fungicides at our disposal today are capable of producing extremely good results, but it is important to apply as much thought to the fungicide programme and timings as to the choice of product, to achieve optimum yield potential. Over recent years, the emphasis has moved away from reactive fungicide applications to treat visible disease in the crop, and more towards a strategy where prevention is better than cure. To achieve this, the fungicides must be applied at the correct time and early in the development of the disease, or even before infection occurs, with timing influenced by growth stage, weather and the variety’s disease resistance.

Disease resistance The AHDB Recommended Lists expresses disease ratings on a scale of 1 to 9, with 1 being poor resistance to the disease and 9 being good. Any variety with a resistance rating for a particular pathogen of 7 or below would require careful attention and a strategic approach to disease control. Out of all the winter wheat varieties on the 2022/23 AHDB Recommended List, only six varieties have a Septoria tritici rating higher than 7. Therefore, in the wetter West almost every variety must be considered as at risk from Septoria infection and all require a robust fungicide programme. For those varieties with a Septoria rating of mid-6 and above, a robust fungicide strategy is still required, but the timings of the applications can be a little more flexible.

Choosing the right herbicide programme With all aspects of agronomy, there is rarely a ‘one size fits all’ solution and flexibility in approach is essential. When planning herbicide programmes there are two key timings to be considered; pre-emergence and post-emergence of the crop and weeds. The most effective herbicide programmes usually commence with a planned pre-em application of residual herbicide. Depending on the situation and the weed spectrum, if an effective pre-em herbicide is applied, additional weed control later in the season may not be required, therefore saving both time and money.

It is important to work with your agronomist or specialist to develop a herbicide strategy that takes into account soil type, drilling date and the expected weed spectrum Application options In winter cereals, one pass with a pre-em containing actives such as flufenacet, diflufenican or pendimethalin will often do a very good job in controlling a broad spectrum of broad-leaved weeds and annual meadow grass, with a second pass sometimes needed to control spring germinating species. For more problematic weeds such as blackgrass or brome, there should be a pre-planned herbicide strategy in place which adopts the principle of ‘stacking’ several different active ingredients, each with a different mode of action. In addition to ‘stacking’ chemistry, a split-timed approach with pre-em and peri-em applications will help to extend the period of residual herbicide activity into the autumn. An effective cover crop mixture that performs well for autumn sowings. It produces huge biomass from the rapid growth of the black oat, whilst also producing a mass of fibrous roots. The vetch will grow vigorously, suppressing weeds whilst fixing nitrogen. The small-seeded phacelia is quick to establish, producing large amounts of biomass to provide good ground cover. The mixture is not frost hardy and will collapse after a keen frost, helping to speed up the mineralisation process.

This diverse mixture will suit many situations where the priority is soil improvement. The different species are producing roots at varying levels within the soil profile, helping to reduce soil compaction, whilst also boosting organic matter through extensive root and top growth. The deep roots of the radish will help penetrate compacted soils. The glucosinolates in the mustard can help reduce nematode populations once incorporated and the vetch provides good weed suppression owing to its ground cover whilst fixing nitrogen.

This mixture will be slower to establish than CC1 but will provide good ground cover. It is frost hardy and can be left to provide an early grazing or forage option in the spring, as the rye will grow in the new year at lower temperatures than other species. A winter hardy vetch is used in the mixture. Seed rates will vary depending on situation, with higher rates being used where the crop is to be utilised in the spring or where good ground cover is required. As with CC1, this mixture will produce a dense root mass whilst increasing nitrogen levels for the succeeding crop.

Both the mustard and phacelia included in this mixture will establish rapidly and give excellent ground cover to help suppress weeds. The deep rooting system of the radish will help aid soil structure, breaking through compaction whilst holding residual nitrogen. The rye provides a large biomass of winter cover preventing nutrient leaching from the soil. Both the brown mustard and rye can provide frost hardy cover as the other species in the mix are unlikely to survive sharp frosts.

This is a low-cost option which is useful where the crop is not required to be in the ground for very long. The rye is winter hardy, providing a large biomass and good ground cover.
