Philadelphia/Delaware Valley Chapter News The Philadelphia/Delaware Valley Chapter, following up on the program initiated by Dr. Frank Enty, has begun presenting copies of the book “Moonfixer” by Earl Lloyd to schools in the Chapter’s area. The book is a significant piece of Black History in that Earl, a WVSU alumnus, was the first African American to play in the National Basketball Association.

Pictured from left: Dr. Reginald Lee (Class of 1950), Samuel Brown, LTC Frederick Franklin, USAF, Ret. (Earl’s high school and college classmate Class of 1950), and Dashon Armstrong. Samuel and Dashon attend the Sankofa Academy Charter School, located in West Chester, PA. LTC Franklin is the Chairman of the Sankofa Academy Charter School Board of Trustees and Dr. Lee is Secretary. Alumni chapters that would like to support this project and help insure its

success may get information from Dr. Frank Enty, also a member of the Class of 1950, at the following address: Dr. Frank Enty, 16136 Parklawn Pl. Bowie, MD 20716, Phone: 301-390-4749.

Metropolitan Washington Chapter News The Metropolitan Washington Alumni Chapter of WVSU had a very busy fourth quarter in, 2011:

College Fairs - The chapter started the 2011 school year by participating in two college fairs. One was held at Quince Orchard High School in North Potomac Maryland. A larger college fair, was part of The UNCF Empower Me Tour. This fair took place on September 9 at the DC Convention Center with more than 500 students attending. During February of 2012, we plan to attend at least three more fairs, one in each of the following areas: Washington DC (UNCF Black College Career Day at Vermont Ave Baptist Church), Montgomery County Maryland (Montgomery Blair High School, Rockville, MD), Northern Virginia (Alfred Street Baptist Church at T. C. Williams High School, Alexandria, VA) Homecoming Bus - The Chapter's Homecoming Bus was almost full as it left the DC Metro area and headed to Charleston for homecoming weekend. Our bus was also available while in Charleston, to assist in transporting alumni to and from the hotels, to the alumni forum, and the game. A large number of alumni members from the area chose to drive their personal vehicles to homecoming also this year. WVSU Football - The Shenandoah Valley Chapter of the WVSU “W” Club sponsored a tailgate at the WVSU Football game hosted at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV. This year we were able to change our normal chapter meeting and join the Baltimore “Charm City” Chapter to support the "W" Club’s tailgate. Members of the three chapters assisted in serving the team, cheerleaders, and staff a meal before they returned to State. Dinner Dance - In October, the chapter had its 5th Annual Dr. Vincent E. Reed Scholarship Fundraiser Dinner Dance at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt, MD.

Alumni members and friends from Ohio, Florida, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and DC (many in costumes) enjoyed an evening of fun. One of the highlights of the evening was the arrival of Dr. and Mrs. Reed. Dr Vincent E. Reed (WVSU class of 52) was US Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education, Department of Education. He also was the former superintendent of public schools in Washington, D.C. Dr. and Mrs. Reed have always been strong supporters of State. This year they presented a check in the amount of $5,000.00 to the scholarship fund. Holiday Celebration - As 2011 neared a close, the chapter held it second holiday potluck. The meal allowed the chapter to celebrate a successful year and enjoy the holiday season together as a family. The holiday celebration was held at the Greater Washington Urban League in Washington DC. To view more photos from the Metropolitan Washington Chapters events, please CLICK HERE.

WVSU Alumni Association, Inc. Proposed Constitution Amendments A committee has reviewed and recommended two (2) amendments to the procedure for election of officers. The current method is very costly and less than 50% of the ballots are returned. The recommended amendment will be sent to all financial members 60 days prior to our May 5, 2012 vote. Approval of the above proposed amendments will change the election process. Voting on the recommended amendments will be held at the next Association’s Business Meeting, 9:00 am, May 5, 2012, Philadelphia, PA. To view the amendments, please CLICK HERE.
