2015 WEE QUILT CHALLENGE April 10 to June 28


McDougall Cottage McDougall Cottage, an 1858 granite and limestone labourer’s house, is located in downtown Cambridge in the historic factory district. Home for more than a century to two families of hardworking Scots, the McDougalls and the Bairds, this charming cottage with its pocket-sized gardens, boasts some of the most spectacular hand-painted friezes and trompe l’oeil ceilings Ontario has to offer.

CEILIDHS

The Cottage serves as an interpretation centre, hosting a variety of special events that celebrate the area’s Scottish heritage. Regular events include monthly Ceilidhs, Tartan Teas and Kids in Kilts afternoons.

Join us for a casual evening concert featuring traditional music and Scottish hospitality. Monthly musical hosts. Admission by cash donation.

Hours of Operation March 5 to April 30 Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

Failte Ceilidh – Traditional Tunes Thursday, March 5, 7 to 9 p.m. Hosted by fiddler Gwen Potter.

Admission By donation unless otherwise noted. The Cottage will be open for Family Day February 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Museum Members receive a 10 per cent discount on walking tours, teas, workshops and talks. Treat your friends and family to events at McDougall Cottage. Gift certificates now available.

Maundy Thursday Ceilidh Thursday, April 2, 7 to 9 p.m. We’ll be accepting donations on behalf of our Cambridge Self-Help Foodbank. Hosted by McDougall’s 2015 Musician-in-Residence.

The Friends of McDougall Cottage present A Farewell Concert for McDougall’s 2014 Musician-in-Residence, flutist, Allison Lupton Friday, March 13, 8 p.m. Café 13 Main Street Grill Cambridge Allison wraps up a stellar year as the 2014 Musicianin-Residence with the help of some special musical guests. Tickets available in advance at McDougall Cottage and the Waterloo Region Museum. $15 per person The 2015 Musician-in-Residence to be announced this evening.

Tea with Granny Wednesday, March 18 (no musician)

One Saturday afternoon each month, kids ages three and up, are invited to create a fun seasonal or Scottish inspired craft. Drop in anytime between 1 and 4 p.m. Suggested donation of $3/child. Adults no charge. Spoon Puppets (kilted of course!) Saturday, March 7

TALK: Searching your Scottish Roots Thursday, March 19, 7 p.m. Genealogy lecturer and writer, Christine Woodcock, shows you how to get started researching your Scottish roots and how to make the most of your research. Please call to register. By donation ($5/person suggested).

Workshop: Printmaking for Adults – Celtic Design Linoblock Prints Sunday, March 29, 1 to 4 p.m. Betty Praught and Kari Mullin from Galt’s Riverside Print Group share their knowledge and printmaking expertise. All levels welcome. $35/person plus HST (includes instruction and supplies). Call to register. Homemade Hot Cross Buns Friday, April 3 – Good Friday 1 to 4 p.m. We’ll be demonstrating how to make the most traditional of Scottish Easter treats – Hot Cross Buns! Stop by for a sample and the recipe. There will be crafts too! Donations appreciated. Traditional egg dyeing and rolling Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5 1 to 4 p.m. See how it was done in the good old days and try your hand at traditional egg dyeing and rolling fun. Easter treats for all the kids. By donation.

GARDENS AND THE GRAND QUILT EXHIBIT On exhibit from April 10 to June 28 Marvel at the miniature quilt masterpieces created by gifted quilt artists, from near and far for the 2015 Wee Quilt Challenge.

25th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast Hosted at Waterloo Region Museum Wednesday, April 15 7:30 to 10 a.m. The staff at McDougall Cottage, Waterloo Region Museum, Joseph Schneider Haus, and the Region of Waterloo Libraries host our annual volunteer appreciation breakfast at the Waterloo Region Museum. Free for volunteers.

Day Activities: Time to Travel Friday, April 17 1 to 4 p.m. (Drop in anytime) All kids are welcome to drop in for some fun travel themed games, crafts and more on your day off school! Children must be accompanied by an adult. By donation. $5/child suggested. Scottish Music Night Thursday, April 23, 7 p.m. With David Neigh (fiddler) and Laura Ashfield (vocalist). A performance of traditional Scottish fiddle music and ballads and selections from Laura’s grandmother’s Scottish song book. By donation. WORKSHOP: Painted Miniature Scottish Thistle Sunday, April 26, 1 to 4 p.m. Create a stunning painted watercolour miniature of a Scottish thistle under the guidance of miniature painter, Debbie Thompson Wilson. $40/person plus HST. Call to register. All levels welcome.
