Joseph Schneider Haus Joseph Schneider Haus National Historic Site is a dynamic community museum and local landmark in downtown Kitchener. The 1816 Georgian frame farmhouse was built by one of the area’s early settlers, Joseph Schneider, a Pennsylvania-German Mennonite. Today, history comes to life as costumed staff demonstrate traditional tasks in step with the seasons. Come by for a visit and enjoy hands-on activities, workshops, special events, gallery exhibits and more! Winter/Spring hours February 14 to April 30 The historic house, galleries and gift shop are open Wednesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. The main floor of the historic house and exhibit galleries are wheelchair accessible. Admission* Adults $2.25 Seniors/Students $1.50 Children $1.25 Family $5 (Two adults and their dependent children) All prices plus HST. Gift Certificates available. Museum members receive a 10 per cent discount on select workshops and in our gift shop. Free parking, accessible by GRT bus routes 2, 8, 24 and 25. *Prices subject to change

Laurie’s appreciation for glass moved her through stained glass and into the warm realm of fused and kiln-formed glass. Her current body of glass art is based on close observations of nature. The Folk Artist-in-Residence is sponsored by the Friends of Joseph Scheider Haus.

Get a Reaction! March Break Fused Glass Drop-In Tuesday, March 17, 1 to 4 p.m. – $6 plus HST Explore chemical reactions using reactive glass and fusible components. Fused Glass Pendant for Mom Saturday, May 2, 1 to 4 p.m. – $30 plus HST Ages 6 to 96. Make two pendants. Pre-registration required. Watch for more glass workshops in the fall.

Glass demonstrations Celebrating Quilts – Stained Glass Demo Saturday, June 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. Join Laurie as she demonstrates the tools, techniques and materials of stained glass, while working on a colour-splashed glass quilt.

Trees of Life Exhibit

March 14 to 22

Drop-in activities all week long in the Historic House.

Celebrate the coming of spring! Trees are a symbol of renewal and regeneration. This exhibit draws on the Joseph Schneider Haus folk-art collection. February 14 to April 26

Grand National Quilt Show We invite quilt artists from across Canada to participate in the 2015 exhibition. This years theme is Connections. May 10 to September 27 For entry forms and more information visit: www.grandnationalquiltshow.ca

Quilt Block Contest The 2015 contest theme is Vibrant Violaceous. Submit an original quilt block or use a traditional design pieced or appliqued that includes floral and purple. Submissions are due April 16, 2015. The completed quilt will be raffled off in 2016, with proceeds assisting Museum projects. For more information visit: http://bit.ly/quiltblockcontest

Tuesday, March 17, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Come and get crafty with Joseph Schneider Haus staff all day. Special guests Knitting Enthusiast Emily Beilby and Stained Glass Artist Laurie Spieker drop in for some hands-on fused glass activities and/or bring your knitting projects and problems, 1 to 4 p.m.

KW Forest School and Elements of Bird Language

Wednesday, March 18, 1 to 4 p.m. Birds are the eyes and ears of the forest. If we learn to listen in on their conversations, we can pick up a lot more of what’s going on in the woods, seeing more wildlife as a result. Dylan Siebert will introduce this ancient art using outdoor games for the young and young at heart.

Tin Roof Global

Thursday, March 19, 12:30 to 2 p.m. and 2:30 to 4 p.m. Drone helicopter flights! Tin Roof Global will be showing you where our water flows from 91 metres up (300 feet).

Let’s Talk Science

Friday, March 20, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. University of Waterloo’s Let’s Talk Science are bringing their most exciting and informative hands-on experiments.

Family Day – Winter Tracking and Storytelling

Monday, February 16, 1 to 4 p.m. At this time of year there are stories written in the snow, and we can learn to read them. Join Dylan Siebert of KW Forest School for outdoor games and activities that teach the elements of tracking, as well as what these skills mean for winter survival and daily interactions with our animal neighbours.

All About Undertaking: Funeral Businesses and Practices in Waterloo County

Thursday, February 19, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Author and local historian Marion Roes discusses both the changing rituals around death and burial practices of cultural groups within the region and the people who have made a career providing those services. 2014 Edna Staebler Research Fellow, sponsored by the Friends of Joseph Scheider Haus. 25th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast

Hosted at Waterloo Region Museum Wednesday, April 15, 7:30 to 10 a.m. The staff at Joseph Schneider Haus, Waterloo Region Museum, McDougall Cottage and the Region of Waterloo Libraries host our annual volunteer appreciation breakfast at the Waterloo Region Museum. Free for volunteers.

PD Day Activities

Friday, April 17, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Keep little hands busy with an array of family fun activities happening throughout the day.

Recycled Puppet Workshop

Sample some traditional Easter cheese and help the Schneiders scratch decorate Pennsylvania-German designs onto naturally dyed Easter Eggs.

Easter Egg Hunt

Saturday, April 4, 10 a.m. Meet the Easter Bunny and bring along a small basket to collect eggs! For ages eight and younger. $2 suggested donation.

Saturday, April 18, 1 to 4 p.m. In celebration of Earth Day we’re recycling socks, shoes, CD cases and more to create magical creatures with Sarah Granskou, Folk Artist-in-Residence 2013. Cost: $40 adults, $35 seniors and children six and up plus HST. Materials included. Call to register.

April 25 and 26 Meet Horticulturalist Karolyn Fournier on April 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. Learn all about seed collecting, sharing and planting from our guests from Waterloo 4H. Plant a seed to take home.
