Celebrate Canada 150 with a visit to
oodside National Historic Site is the boyhood home of Canada’s tenth and longest serving Prime Minister, William Lyon Mackenzie King. Willie, as he was affectionately known by his close friends and family, lived the most influential years of his childhood at Woodside. This lovingly preserved Victorian home, filled with King family heirlooms and period reproductions, is set on 11.5 acres of mature forest, is a portal to the Victorian era in Canada. As you arrive at Woodside you will be surrounded by an urban oasis full of wooded grounds, gardens, and trails. The landscape reflects the 1890s, based on historic photographs, letters from the Mackenzie King Papers, early surveys, and the site itself. To the south of the house you can enjoy the lily pond and admire the tulip tree that was said to have been planted by John King, over 110 years ago. Woodside is a source of civic pride, and reflects Mackenzie King’s longstanding role in the community in which so many of his values were shaped and where he began his career as a Member of Parliament of Canada. Many points in North Dumfries have easy access off Hwy. 401 which lead to conservation area hiking, canoeing, and a wide range of farm gate experiences. Visit the quaint Village of Greenfield which is the first Heritage Conservation District in North Dumfries, a small historic 19th century mill settlement. Stop at one of the many farm gates to stock up on fresh, local food. Enjoy a picnic by the mill pond in Centennial Park in beautiful downtown Ayr, the Township’s largest settlement area.

T
his was the great eventful day of this extensive dominion,” 23-year-old Matilda Bowers Eby noted in her diary when Canada came into being 150 years ago. The young mother lived in Perth County, but had grown up on a farm outside the Waterloo County village of Berlin (renamed Kitchener in 1916) and was visiting family there. Her brief entry for July 1, 1867 hints at irritation with a photographer who made a portrait negative for her, but was too busy to do one of her two-year-old daughter. She observed some Confederation celebrations from a distance, but didn’t get involved. By all accounts, the 40,000 residents of Waterloo County — today’s Waterloo Region has 535,000 — enjoyed beautiful weather on the day Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick became provinces in the new country of Canada — which now, of course, has 10 provinces and three northern territories. There were parades and fireworks in the rival communities of Berlin, which had about 2,500 residents, and Galt (now part of Cambridge), which had 3,500. Still, the crowds didn’t match those seen most years to mark Queen Victoria’s May 24 birthday. Berlin, which had
many people of German descent, would draw far more people for an 1871 “peace festival” when the FrancoPrussian War in Europe ended. Dozens of Confederation-era buildings still stand in the region today. The Joseph Schneider Haus (1816) in Kitchener and the McDougall Cottage (1858) in Cambridge are now museums that can help us imagine what life was like in the 1860s: No electricity. Little or

no plumbing. If you were lucky, you had a private well for obtaining water. No refrigeration or air conditioning. Coal-oil lamps were a recent innovation for seeing in the dark. The telephone had yet to be invented (that came in 1876) so to communicate you met in person, wrote letters or had the nearest telegraph agent send a note. To shop or get to work, you walked or travelled by horse and buggy. Trains were a new option for longer trips. On the outskirts of Berlin you might see Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation when they wintered near today’s Schneider Creek. The county was part of their traditional territory. Larger communities had police and fire brigades. Some fires could be fought with water stored in tanks buried at street corners. There were doctors, but Berlin didn’t get a full-time dentist until 1867. By then Galt Population in Waterloo Region: 1871 and 2016

had at least two, one of whom advertised he had “the most perfect apparatus in Canada for extracting teeth without pain.” The creation of Canada meant there would now be elections for the new federal Parliament in Ottawa and the provincial legislature in Toronto. Late in the summer of 1867 voters (only male property owners got to cast a ballot) elected Isaac Erb Bowman of St. Jacobs the first federal member for the north half of Waterloo County. In the south half, James Young of Galt was elected. Macdonald, a Conservative, was the first prime minister. Fears that the United States might try to expand north had been an argument for Confederation. Also a worry were raids in the Niagara area in 1866 by Fenian Brotherhood members seeking independent rule for Ireland. These had prompted creation of a county militia unit, the 29th Waterloo Battalion. On July 1, 1867, its members were summoned to take part in Confederation celebrations. Newspaper accounts of the Galt festivities describe how the day began with a 5 a.m. blast — a royal salute fired from a cannon — followed by the ringing of bells. Later in the morning, school children paraded to a public gathering at a grove above the Grand River, led by four “handsomely dressed young ladies” representing the new “sister provinces.” Galt’s mayor, Morris Lutz, led the crowd in giving three cheers for the Queen. That evening a torchlight procession through the town concluded with fireworks in Queen’s Square. In Berlin,“flags fluttered on the houses and colourful bunting stretched across the streets to greet the visitors who . . . numbered about 5,000 in the course of the day,” the German-language Berliner Journal reported. Firefighters from Waterloo village (then about 1,300 people) joined their Berlin counterparts in demonstrating their special skills. Militia members marched on the local cricket grounds, then attended a luncheon where Ward Bowlby, reeve (mayor) of Berlin, sang their praises. “Not as many of the ‘leading men of Waterloo County’ were present as had been expected,” the Journal noted. Evening events included a concert, dance and torchlight parade. Fifty years later, Jacob Stroh, a militia member present for the 1867 celebrations, recalled that a cannon salute was also fired off that day in Berlin. The vibrations were so strong, he said, that nearby windows were broken.

aterloo Region’s fast growing tech scene is a magnet for talent from across Canada and around the world. We love data here — and the 2016 census data gave us something to cheer about. The population growth in the Region outpaced the national growth rate over the last five years. Over 535,000 people call Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and four townships of North Dumfries, Wellesley, Wilmot and Woolwich home. Those numbers make us the tenth largest metropolitan area in Canada. Waterloo Region is a community built on great friendships, hard work and an ability to change with the times. Our cities have been the homes of some of Canada’s best brewers, distillers, artisans, makers and manufacturers. We’re now also home to some of the world’s best technology innovators. Local startups have been scaling into globally recognized brands — creating new opportunities for

home-grown talent and newcomers alike. Taking a ride around Waterloo Region, you’ll see the homes of these startups, including Vidyard, Thalmic Labs, Sortable and Axonify just to name a few. Our talent pool and reputation for innovation have attracted the attention of tech companies from around Canada, the United States and Europe too. Both startups and international tech companies are breathing new life into some of the historic buildings around Waterloo Region. Google’s largest engineering office outside of California moved into the renovated Breithaupt Block building in downtown Kitchener in 2016. Also in 2016, Ottawa-based Shopify opened a 300-person office in the former Seagram Distillery building in uptown Waterloo. California-based companies Square and Atomic Labs and the German automotive company Bosch have also opened offices around the Region.
Our population is also bolstered by our postsecondary institutions — the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and Conestoga College. These three schools add over 65,000 students a year to the community.

I’m a tech transplant to the region myself by way of Florida. When I moved here, one of the first things a local told me was “...make sure you get tickets to Concordia for Oktoberfest.” This was in January, so I didn’t understand the urgency since I had ten months. I quickly learned about Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, Canada’s largest Bavarian festival, and its storied place in the hearts of locals and out-of-towners alike. The Region is also known for its sweet treats. Our summers are bookended by two food-focused festivals that take you out into the beautiful countryside. The first warm days in April means it’s time to hit the sugar bush and the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival in Woolwich Township. The world’s largest single-day maple syrup festival brings over 60,000 people together for pancakes, music and streets lined with food vendors from around the region. As the summer ends and fall sets in, head to the Wellesley Apple Butter Festival. Be sure to enjoy the fresh cider, snack on a few apple fritters and take home some of their famous apple butter. The highlight for me is the annual Wellesley Idol singing competition — a showcase of talent from around the Region. The addition of different cultures and new ideas have added an amazing array of diversity to regional festivals, cultural events, nightlife and restaurants. One of the more recent additions to the local festival lineup is the Irish Real Life Festival that takes place in March. The Festival organizers want everyone to celebrate their “Irish roots” — even if they’re not Irish. It’s a week-long event featuring music, art, Irish food, drink and some of the best “craic” this side of Dublin. In June, it’s time to enjoy the Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Festival in Victoria Park. The park becomes an international smörgåsbord of aromas and tastes with food vendors representing fifteen countries. Your eyes and ears aren’t left out of the fun either. The festival showcases music and dance from over thirty countries on its main stage. Waterloo Region has a vibrant Caribbean community and their showcase is June’s Caribbean Dreams Concert. The concert brings a slice of West Indian culture to Waterloo Region and is a showcase for young artists from the Region and the Caribbean. The celebration of international music and dance continues in July with the Neruda Arts Kultrún Festival. Kultrún (pronounced ‘cool-troon’) dubs itself as the Region’s largest outdoor dance party. The festival brings local, national and international artists to Kitchener’s Victoria Park for two days of dancing, workshops, food and a beer garden.

Traditional folk music is celebrated in Cambridge at the Mill Race Festival. Taking place in August, the Mill Race Festival models itself on traditional outdoor European festivals with stages set up around the city. Our local arts scene has benefited from the growth in the Region. Downtown Kitchener is home to the Centre in the Square performing arts centre, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and the world renowned annual TD Kitchener Blues Festival. The downtown core is also home to Green Light Arts, a theatre company created by two artists who moved to the city from Toronto. The Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery brings exhibitions from both local and international artists to the area throughout the year — with a focus on contemporary culture. Our culinary scene has also benefited from the growth in students, tech workers and their families. Traditional German restaurants line the same streets with African, Asian and even southern soul-food inspired culinary experiences. If you want to sample a piece of Waterloo Region’s past and future, then you don’t have to look further than Victoria Street in Kitchener. You can have a late breakfast served on counters that have seen sixty years of diners at the landmark Jimmy’s Lunch at 297 Victoria St N, Kitchener. After lunch, you can head three doors down for a craft beer at Descendants Beer and Beverage at 319 Victoria St N, Kitchener, opened by Dublin-born Robin Molloy in 2016. There’s a lot to do and even more to taste when you visit Waterloo Region — hope you enjoy!

Mill Race Festival of Traditional Folk Music
O
ne of the best ways to experience the changes in Waterloo Region is to take a walk from Uptown Waterloo to Downtown Kitchener. The tour will take you just over an hour. To begin, head to the PERIMETER INSTITUTE FOR THEORETICAL PHYSICS located at 31 Caroline Street North in Waterloo. There’s parking available at the Waterloo Public Library next door or at the Uptown Waterloo Parkade on King Street. Founded in 1999 by BlackBerry co-founder Mike Lazaridis, the Institute is one of the world’s premier centres for physics research. British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, a Distinguished Visiting Research Chair at the Perimeter Institute, has been known to visit the Duke of Wellington Pub in the Shops at Waterloo Town Square. Head south on Caroline Street to Erb Street and you’ll come to the former Seagram Distillery at 57 Erb Street West, now home to SHOPIFY PLUS. The world’s leader in e-commerce set up shop in the renovated space in 2016 and now employs over two hundred developers, designers and salespeople. Originally opened in 1857, the distillery was active until the early 1980s. It housed a museum and then the Centre for International Governance Innovation before becoming the home to the Shopify team. Next, head northeast on Erb Street and right on King Street and make a coffee stop at SETTLEMENT CO. at 23 King Street North. Settlement Co. roasts their beans on-site where you’ll find artists bumping elbows with tech workers thanks to their in-table wireless chargers. Grab your coffee to go and head south on King Street along the ION light rail transit route. You’ll walk by the renovated Bauer Building — now home to condos, restaurants and shops, where you’ll find the best sandwiches in Waterloo. VINCENZO’S at 150 Caroline Street features daily pop-up vendors — but is known for their sandwich counter. Avoid the lunch rush if you can — workers from around the area dominate the counter during the lunch hour. After you’ve enjoyed your sandwich, continue south on King Street past Grand River Hospital to 51 Breithaupt Street in Kitchener, home of GOOGLE Kitchener-Waterloo. The award-winning development of the former factory buildings is a sight to behold. The front of the building is a newly constructed glass facade that flows into the renovated brick and beam factory building.

Continue south on King Street and make a right at Victoria Street. You’ll see the UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO’S SCHOOL OF PHARMACY on your right and the KAUFMAN LOFTS on your left. The Kaufman Rubber Company, a shoe manufacturing company, was built in stages between 1908 and 1925, then was renovated into the Kaufman Lofts in 2006. The Kaufman Lofts were the epicentre of the revitalization of the downtown Kitchener core — and now shares the skyline with office buildings and condo towers. Your tour continues down Victoria Street to the Tannery building at 151 Charles Street. The building was the site of the Lang Tanning Company founded in the mid-1880’s and once the largest tannery in the British Empire. Over the years, the building housed everything from an indoor paintball course to performance rehearsal space. It’s now home to education tech leader D2L, the UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO’S VELOCITY startup space and COMMUNITECH. Communitech is a not-for-profit organization that develops programming to help tech companies in Waterloo Region start, grow and succeed. Combined, Communitech and Velocity have over 117,000 square feet of space for tech companies of all sizes and stages. Communitech offers public tours on Thursday and they are a great way to see what attracts companies to the area. You can book tours at http://communitech.ca.
