Stroll through the Ayr Walking Tour and the Roseville Walking Tour. Here you will find the story of some of the 20 designated historical landmarks including stately stone houses, log homes, one-room schoolhouses and barns that are recognized and protected under the Ontario Heritage Act. The Village of Ayr, the Township’s largest settlement area, provides respite to the traveller with opportunities to rest, relax and enjoy dining and specialty retail.

WELLESLEY The Township of Wellesley is home to a culturally vibrant community. Contributing to this vibrancy is the abundance of community spirit in volunteerism. This community hosts numerous events and festivals throughout the year including the Wellesley Apple Butter & Cheese Festival. With a combined population of just over 10,500 it includes Bamberg, Crosshill, Hawkesville, Linwood, Heidelberg, St. Clements, Wallenstein and Wellesley settlement areas. Wellesley, St. Clements and Linwood are the township’s largest towns. The towns are mostly agricultural where locals still converse in Deitsch (a German dialect) and are delighted to sell their homemade sausages, maple syrup, shoo-fly pies, apple butter, cooked cheese, butter, bacon, local Mennonite furniture and even quilts right out of their shops, farms or homes. No Sunday sales.

BIKES, BUGGIES AND BAKERIES - TOURING WATERLOO REGION ON TWO WHEELS by Jane Snyder

www.explorewaterlooregion.ca

“Cycling is the new golf,” Waterloo Cycling Club president Alain Francq enthuses, noting that Waterloo Region is the perfect place to ride. What makes Waterloo Region a great place to cycle? Francq considers my question carefully, citing the 425-member-strong Waterloo Cycling Club, competitive cycling events, great multi-use trails and the calm, undulating roads that make great cycling daytrips in rural Waterloo Region.

RIDING IN THE COUNTRYSIDE Waterloo Region is one of the few places to see recreational and competitive cyclists riding alongside Old Order Mennonites and Amish cyclists. Riding for transportation more than pleasure, Mennonites and Amish have been cycling the roads of Waterloo Region for generations. Riding in Waterloo Region will take you through quaint villages, gentle river flats, through a historic covered bridge, and past Mennonite meeting houses or horse-drawn buggies. Stop for a well-earned break at one of the rural cafés

or restaurants.

RIDING TO WIN “This region has some of the nicest rural roads for cycling,” Malcolm Steven of Cycle Waterloo told me, regaling me with tales of the competitive – and casual – cycling events held in Waterloo Region. Organized by Cycle Waterloo, the 6th annual Tour de Waterloo will be held on June 21, 2015, the closing event for a jam-packed Waterloo Region cycling weekend that will include the nationally-sanctioned Kitchener Twilight Grand Prix criterion and Sprints on King. I attended the Grand Prix in 2014 and watched

The TD Kitchener Blues Festival attracts over 150,000 visits to this four-day event, now celebrating its 15th year. The 2015 Festival, which runs August 6-9, will feature multiple stages (with both free admission and paid concerts). RIDING IN THE CITY Not up for a long rural ride or rock-jumping, but you’re ready to ride in Waterloo Region? Local municipalities have made cycling within the cities of Waterloo, Kitchener and Cambridge easier, with new multi-use trails and way finding signs to point cyclists in the right direction – literally! The Iron Horse trail (5.5 km) is a great way to explore the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo at a relaxed pace. Begin your trip with a warm-up coffee at one of the shops at the historic Bauer building at the Waterloo trailhead. Fifteen minutes of relaxed cycling will bring you to City Café Bakery (more coffee, anyone?); a short ride later you arrive at Victoria Park, where you can visit the super splash pad and new playground (whether or not you are travelling with kids!), enjoy a picnic lunch, visit the Victoria Park Gallery (open weekend and holiday afternoons from 1- 4:30, midMay to late October) and soak up the sun. Back on your

68

bike, take a short detour from the trail to visit historic Joseph Schneider Haus (or a trip to Nougat Café a few minutes away

from the historic site), check out downtown Kitchener or take a dip in the City of Kitchener’s outdoor Harry Class Pool. Head back to the trail to continue south through Kitchener where you’ll end your trip at the Rockway Golf Course, close to another branch of the City Café Bakery! The Iron Horse Trail is a linear trail, so if you are up for the ride back to the trailhead, ride the trail in reverse. If all of the cycling (and coffee drinking) has tired you out, put your bike on the bus! Grand River Transit’s Bus ‘n’ Bike program lets you and your bike cover more distance, and see more of Waterloo Region. Other multi-use trails in the region include the Walter Bean trail, the Laurel Trail, Hillcrest Park, the Bob McMullen Linear Trail, the Grand Trunk Trail and many more (see the links on next page for maps and details). Visiting Waterloo Region without your bike? Community Access Bikeshare is a made-in-Waterloo-Region bikeshare with locations in Waterloo and Kitchener. For a low fee bikeshare riders can access a fleet of well-maintained, easyto-ride bicycles.

While road racing is a major draw to Waterloo Region, the Waterloo Hydrocut is fast becoming known across Ontario – and across North America – as a premier destination for mountain bikers, walkers and runners. In 2014 the Hydrocut logged 41,000 individual visits (the Waterloo Cycling Club has installed a counter – you can see the crunched numbers on their website).

challenge riders, such as rocks, logs and steep climbs. Not up to riding one of the ‘features’, or riding with children? Each of the technical features of the Hydrocut has a parallel trail that lets you bypass the ‘tough stuff’ and continue on with the trail. While the Hydrocut’s trail sections are close together, they are designed to be far enough apart so that you don’t see the other trails while you’re riding. “When you’re on the trail it feels like you’re alone in the forest” quips Waterloo

Cycling Club president Alain Francq.

Day 3 – Kitchener Start with breakfast at the Kitchener Market upper level where you can enjoy food from around the world. Enjoy a fresh cup of coffee made with locally roasted, fair-trade beans. Venture to the lower level where every Saturday, for more than 140 years, Kitchener residents have enjoyed the bounty of meats, produces, dairy products and more. Meet the vendors they love to tell where your food is coming from.

Joseph Schneider Haus

Waterloo Region Museum

Visit Joseph Schneider Haus Museum & Gallery for a dynamic community museum in downtown Kitchener built by one of the area's first pioneers, Joseph Schneider, a Pennsylvania-German Mennonite. The heart-shaped latch at the kitchen door extends the first gesture of welcome. Then the warmth of the stove draws you in, friendly staff in period dress complete the the seasonal task or just pull up a chair for some tea talk. Stop for lunch at one of the many great restaurants downtown Kitchener including Imbibe or The Boathouse, both serving locally sourced food. Finish the trip with a visit to Waterloo Region Museum and Doon Heritage Village. The main gallery tells the story of Waterloo Region following through to the 'Ocean Bound!" exhibit on until May 10th replaced by 'Beer The Exhibit' in June. The entrance to Doon Heritage Village is a picturesque 60 acre living history village that shows visitors what life was like in Waterloo Region in 1914. The village is open seasonally from May to December.
