Sports Network

Greetings Sports Fans....... wrhi.com

fm107.com

Welcome to our 2013 issue of the O-T-S Radio Listener Guide saluting our local homegrown NFL stars. Interviews with some of these players can be heard on our popular “Red Zone” sports program every Wednesday from 7 to 8 pm on Interstate 107. Another weekly program, “End Zone” has become one of our most popular additions, and returns from 10pm to 12am on both wrhi.com and Interstate 107.1 & 107.3. The Friday night show is full of scores, highlights and spontaneous coach interviews.

This year’s guide continues the tradition of keeping you informed on where and when your favorite team will be heard on the Radio, on the Internet, and on your phone App. (See opposite page for how you can hear all of our games every Friday night through your computer or smart phone.) This year we are adding a special FREE “in stadium radio broadcast” on FM-104.1 at selected games throughout the season. Bring your radio and listen to all the action from your favorite seat at the stadium. (See page 30 for games providing this special service.) We’re also happy to be honoring the “radio voice” of the Rock Hill Bearcats, Gene Knight and pioneer broadcaster Harper Gault, as the 2013 inductees into our OTS Sports Wall of Fame. (See pages 34-37.) We extend special thanks to all of our partner sponsors who provide our guides FREE to the general public. Additional thanks to our editor Chris Miller and everyone who worked to make this year’s guide possible. We hope you enjoy the action of your favorite teams this season and we thank you for making or stations and the OTS Official Radio Listeners’ Guide the tri-county area’s most popular high school information source.

Best of luck to your favorite team from WRHI, Interstate 107 & The OTS Sports Network!!!!

Two years ago, the OTS Sports Network was one of the first radio groups in the country to offer high school football through smartphone Apps. This was in addition to standard AM and FM broadcasts, as well as internet streaming. Thousands of fans from across the world signed into and downloaded the free Apps to stay in touch with their favorite teams no matter where they were. Your overwhelming response has prompted OTS sports to invest additional personnel and resources in 2013 to assure that we continue providing the best internet and App service available. In addition to accessing all 6 live games every Friday night through the Free “Tune-In App”, you can now download the WRHI and/or Interstate 107 App and hear all 6 games. It is extremely simple: just go to your App store, search WRHI and/or Interstate 107, download the App and there you go. Then on game night, you can access the stream by clicking on the sidebar and selecting “other stations”, once there just select the game of your choice. You can also find your game of interest by going to the “Tune-in App” and searching WRHI, Interstate 107, or WRHI.com game 3, 4, 5, or 6. Any of the above options will keep you tuned into every play of your favorite team’s season. Once you’ve downloaded your WRHI and Interstate Apps you can listen not only on Friday but all week long for your favorite features and sporting events. On WRHI you’ll hear the very latest news, weather and traffic along with Palmetto Mornings, Sean Hannity, Mike Huckabee, Dave Ramsey and more. On the Interstate 107 App you can hear your favorite Country Music with Charlie Derek every morning and head home with Chuck Boozer every afternoon. Take advantage of FREE, LIVE and RELIABLE streaming of all the OTS Sports Network programming to your home and mobile device – all in one place – WRHI.com!!!

2013 Season Preview

The Clover Blue Eagles are hoping to rise from the ashes of two disastrous seasons. New head coach Chad Smith brings his version of the double wing T-formation to a town very familiar with the power of a hard nose ground game. The Blue Eagles return some skill players who can make an impact early on and the success of the offense should allow the defense to get seasoned by the time region games begin in October. The Clover faithful are regarded as some of the best fans in the state of South Carolina and the Blue Eagles can always count on a large crowd supporting them at every game, home and away. The future of Blue Eagle football is going to be brighter in Clover and it starts this season. -Gene Knight

2013 Season Preview

The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets enter the 2013 season with hopes of bettering their 7-5 record, and avenging their 1st round playoff loss to eventual champ, Greenwood, in 2012. But that will be no easy task as they must replace 8 starters on each side of the ball. Coach Ed Susi’s club has worked hard in the weight room and in the summer passing leagues, and should be able to hold their own. The biggest shoes to fill will be at QB, and in the trenches as the Jackets lost 4 starters from both the offensive and defensive lines. -Robert Earl Carter

2013 Season Preview

The Lancaster Bruins will be looking to right the ship after a disappointing 2-9 finish in the 2012 campaign. Coach Bennie McMurray has always believed in playing hard-nosed defense first, and complementing that with a balanced offense, and a focus on good special teams play. The Bruins should be able to accomplish that type of play with several returning starters at key positions in 2013. Playing in Region 3-AAAA (the toughest in the state) will test their fortitude, but the Bruins appear ready for the challenge and another run at a playoff berth. 15 -Robert Earl Carter

2013 Season Preview

The Nation Ford Falcons set records galore last season in compiling a 7-5 record, and making another playoff appearance. The Falcons will need to have several players step up this season to fill some big holes at the skill positions and on defense, but a good group of seniors should be able to give leadership to the youngsters coming in. Coach Michael Allen preaches a concept of unity and family, and the Falcons seem to be buying into that idea. Look for NaFo to surprise a few teams this year. 17 -Robert Earl Carter

2013 Season Preview

Northwestern comes into the 2013 season ranked #22 nationally (MaxPreps.com) and #1 in the state by most publications. With the talent returning, the Trojans offense should have no problem putting up points in bunches. On defense, Northwestern will be exceptional in their back seven players, but will need to get production from the defensive line to be elite. For Northwestern, the goal is simple, revenge for last year’s heartbreaking overtime state championship loss. The Trojans should be one of the last teams standing in December. -Chris Miller

The Rock Hill High Bearcats may be renamed The AirCats after this season. Head Coach Joe Montgomery has hired Bearcat alumnus Bubba Pittman as the offensive coordinator. Coach Pittman brings the Air Raid offense to the Rock. The Air Raid offense will fit Rock Hill's skill personnel and exploit inferior defensive alignments. However, the Bearcats must improve on the defensive side of the ball if they hope to contend in the region. Beware of the Bearcats. -Gene Knight

2013 Season Preview:

Since coach Strait Herron took over for the Stallions, all they have done is win, going 26-3 in two seasons with him at the helm. The Stallions again will be one of the area’s strongest teams defensively, forcing other teams into mistakes. South Pointe’s speed is what sets them apart from most teams around the state and that will be on display again this year. With two state championships in the past 5 years, the Stallions have become one of the premier programs in the state and expect to be in the mix again this year. The Stallions defense will make them one of the top three teams in the region again this year and that will prime them for another deep playoff run. Expect South Pointe to at least be playing in the “Turkey Bowl” for the 6th straight year, and possibly one week more. -Chris Miller

The York Cougars will continue to be one of the top teams in this area. Head Coach Bobby Carroll, his staff, the players and the community are committed to rebuilding York into the football power it once was in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. The Cougars will have to fill some skill spots quickly due to graduation. York had over 12 players from last year’s team sign to play at the next level. The Cougars will have a solid rushing attack along with size and speed on defense; two components that can spell success. The Cougars may take some lumps early on but they will improve as the season progresses and will not be an easy out by playoff time. -Gene Knight

The stations’ pioneering innovations include the first live broadcast coverage for area high schools and colleges and South Carolina’s first play-by-play game coverage heard worldwide via the internet. OTS has celebrated their rich sports heritage annually since 2010 with induction of important sports personalities into the O-T-S Sports Wall of Fame. A secret vote from the station’s 26-member sports staff plus previous living inductees and an on-line listener poll determine the top honorees for induction each year. 2013 inductees Gene Knight and the late Harper Gault will be honored throughout the season including special live segments during “High School Football Tonight” and with a formal induction ceremony at the Rock Hill/Northwestern game on November 8th.

OTS Sports Wall of Fame Honors Two New Members

GENE KNIGHT - 2013 O-T-S Sports Wall of Fame Inductee

York native Gene Knight caught his early passion and enthusiasm for sports from his father, Gene Knight Sr. who coached football and baseball at York High School. In high school, the future broadcaster was a quarterback on the Green Dragon football team and a relief pitcher on the baseball team. At the age of 18, Knight was hired as a part-time board operator at WYCL radio in York. The job continued through college, and after graduating with a Communication Degree from Winthrop University in 1982, Gene was hired fulltime and was later promoted to Operations Manager for both WBZK and WDZK-FM. Knight’s first opportunity to broadcast live football came in 1980 when he was assigned as color commentator for the Chester Cyclones. He also hosted a weekly “Coaches Corner” program featuring Chester and York County coaches. Six years later, he advanced to play-by-play for the York High Cougars, a position he held for 13 years. During the same period, Gene served for multiple years as play-by-play announcer for the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament. In 2000, he joined the O-T-S family of stations as color commentator for the Rock Hill Bearcats and soon began broadcasting high school basketball games on a regular basis. The exposure presented many more opportunities for the talented broadcaster including Cable telecasts for the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas for seven years including the 2008 worldwide broadcast on ESPU and the Cable telecast of the Sun Bowl, featuring youth teams from both Carolinas and held at Charlotte’s Memorial Stadium. His multiple state champi“On Air” 2000 - present onship broadcasts to date include Rock Hill, Northwestern, South Pointe, Clover, Lewisville and York. Gene was promoted to the Rock Hill Bearcats play-byplay position in 2008 and continues to serve in that capacity. Knight has been employed as an Account Rep/IPC by Comporium Communications since 1992 and stays active in his community. In 2011, he spearheaded a group of York High Green Dragon alumnae that erected a monument to the former school. The tribute is located on the campus of Harold C. Johnson Elementary School in York. Knight’s latest creation, Friday Knight’’s Losers, has become a popular internet podcast and is delivered weekly during high school football season on www.wrhi.com. Gene combines weekly results and trends with his vast sports knowledge to predict each week’s losing team in the spirit of the old Leonard’s Losers radio show. Entering the 2013 football season, Gene has broadcast over 350 football games and over 100 basketball games, earning for him the title of “the Dean” by his broadcast comrades. Gene “the Dean” Knight is recognized for his professional broadcast coverage of over 450 high school football and basketball games and his genuine passion and advocacy for local sports. In recognition of the enduring admiration and respect of his peers, the staff and management of the OTS Media Group is proud to welcome Gene as a 2013 inductee into the OTS Sports Wall of Fame.

HARPER GAULT - 2013 OTS Sports Wall of Fame Inductee

When Harper Sydney Gault arrived at Clemson University in 1924, he quickly gained a reputation around campus as the unofficial “student sports information authority.” Four years later, he combined his degree with his youthful passion for sports and set out on a life journey that would result in a legendary broadcasting and journalistic career. After graduation in 1928, Gault landed a job in Wayne, NC, before moving to Rock Hill in the mid-1930s to accept a feature writing position at The Evening Herald. During the same period, he developed his sales prowess when he became an early organizer of Clemson’s IPTAY Club, widely regarded as college sports’ original athletic booster club. Harper recalled recruiting new members who paid their dues yearly “with $10 worth of milk, potatoes or turnips.” He would later become President of IPTAY and co-wrote “Clemson’s IPTAY – the First 50 Years”. In 1947, Harper reached personal journalistic milestones with an acclaimed feature story in the Saturday Evening Post and a 50th anniversary history book that captured the spirit of Clemson and USC’s annual football game entitled “On Air” 1948 - 1977 “Big Thursday in South Carolina.” A year later, he brought his considerable talent to radio and became a partner in WRHI with Bill & Jim Beaty. Upon arrival, his first goal was to find a way to feature his beloved Clemson Tigers on the radio. He quickly accomplished the ambitious feat by joining forces with two Greenville area stations to broadcast live Clemson football games. Harper’s initiative resulted in South Carolina’s first statewide live sports network that boasted a total of 12 stations within a few seasons. Today, WRHI continues as part of Clemson’s 24-station sports network. By the time Gault came to WRHI, live high school football broadcasts were already a fixture each fall, but he foresaw the bigger appeal of year-round sports coverage and aggressively pursued broadcast opportunities for a multitude of local sports events. Soon WRHI’s line-up included minor league baseball, American Legion baseball, high school baseball and basketball, Winthrop training school football and early local dirt track and NASCAR racing coverage. Harper also knew the station needed good talent to anchor WRHI’s expanding sports coverage, and in 1953 he convinced his former Evening Herald co-worker Connie Morton to join the staff fulltime, a move that would elevate both the station and Morton to legendary sports status. During the next three decades, Harper Gault served as the station’s sales manager, as a popular event emcee and under the memorable name of “the Old Corn Merchant,” hosted WRHI’s daily Farm & Agriculture programs. Harper holds the distinction of being one of the first 50 Clemson alumnae to receive the Universities’ Distinguished Service Award in 1969. Other civic sports contributions included his decades of work to advance local golfing. In tribute, the road to the Rock Hill Country Club was re-named Harper Gault Road. In 1977, Harper retired and sold his interest in WRHI. He stayed active in Clemson and civic events until his death in 1995 at the age of 89. Every April, the local Clemson Club pays tribute to his memory with the awarding of eight $500 scholarships to deserving York County Clemson athletes. Harper Gault is recognized and honored for his pioneering accomplishments and foresight of broadcasting live local sports on the Radio; for his status as an iconic Clemson alumnae and his enduring contributions to college and local sports. The staff and management of the OTS Media Group is proud to welcome Harper as a 2013 inductee into the OTS Sports Wall of Fame.

Hosted by Chuck Boozer and Freddie Hammer, “Palmetto Mornings is a unique combination of LIVE entertainment interwoven with news, sports & features from Rock Hill-Fort Mill-Tega Cay-York County and the State of South Carolina. “With Chuck Boozer living in Rock Hill and Freddie Hammer a resident of Fort Mill, we have two seasoned Radio personalities focused on our community, and our community’s views on local, state, regional and national matters of interest, said Manning Kimmel, Managing Partner of OTS Media. “Comporium, and OTS Media both have long histories of community involvement in York & Lancaster counties, and we felt adding “Palmetto Mornings to our programming on CN2Extra (on channels 103/1103 on Comporium cable), would only enhance the service being offered on CN2 with our local cable television news coverage, said Glenn McFadden, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Comporium. “Our two companies have worked on many community projects together over the years and we felt the commitment both have to local service made this partnership a good thing to do for both company’s customers, viewers and listeners.

The Clemson Tigers are poised for a run at not only a 2nd ACC title in 3 seasons, but an even bigger prize, the BCS national championship. With Tahj Boyd returning along with top target Sammy Watkins, Clemson will have no problem scoring in bunches. The Tigers defense will be the question mark again. If Clemson gets to the National title game, they will be deserving based on their schedule. Clemson has three pre-season top ten teams on their slate, including the season opening game against Georgia, annual ACC battle with Florida State, and the Tigers end the season in Columbia trying to stop the Gamecocks 4-game winning streak in the series. -Chris Miller

2013 Season Preview

The Gamecocks have enjoyed the best two seasons in school history and this year, USC is primed to be even better. With former South Pointe star and Heisman hopeful Jadeveon Clowney anchoring the defense, the Gamecocks will be tough on that side of the ball. Offensively, Connor Shaw with his 17-3 career record, returns and electrifying Bruce Ellington will be catching the passes. If Shaw gets banged up, Dylan Thomspon has shown he can step in with ease. The Gamecocks have their eyes on an SEC and BCS championship, but they will need to beat Georgia for a 4th straight year to make that road easier, a tough task in Athens. -Chris Miller

2013 Season Preview

The Carolina Panthers enter the 2013 season on a hot streak, finishing the 2012 season at 7-9. Over the last half of the year, quarterback Cam Newton started to heat up and Luke Kuechly took over the defense. The Panthers shored up their defensive line in the draft and seem to have a very formidable front seven now. The Panthers seem poised to take the next step in making the playoffs, however that will be determined by the play of Cam Newton. It is obvious he has the skill to be dynamic. But can he lead this team? If Cam can, the Panthers will be around come January. If not, the Panthers will again have an average season. My money is on the prior...Panthers sneak in as a wild card. -Chris Miller
