2022 Season Preview

The Copperheads of Catawba Ridge enter year number four of existence. Coach Zac Lendyak is adamant that this 2022 group has great attitude and enthusiasm. The competition amongst the position battles feels different and the team overall has better communication. On offense, CR moves on from highly touted quarterback Jaydn Davis who transferred to Providence. The Copperheads played well in his absence a year ago winning all the games he didn’t start. Overall they went 6-5 battling through injury and a brutal schedule. However, CR has depth on the offensive line even after losing three starters. With 23 seniors gone, they see their best experience at running back and on defense in the linebacking core. With realignment, the Northwestern Trojans join the region that already contains defending champion South Pointe, York, Indian Land, and Lancaster. In non conference play, Catawba Ridge added some new teams to the mix as they will travel to the Charlotte area twice playing West Cabarrus and Charlotte Latin. The Copperheads will also have two very tough opponents at home with cross-town rival Nation Ford, and 3A title contender Chester. -Tyler Cupp

2022 Season Preview

The 2022 edition of the Blue Eagles looks to build on their trip to the playoffs last year. Clover will lean on 6 returning starters on both sides of the ball to bring the experience and leadership needed to excel this season. As always, Head Coach Brian Lane and his up-tempo offense will put pressure on defenses all across the field. Expect excellent quarterback play and depth at the position, and a talented group in the trenches to clear the way for speedy running backs who will play just as big of a role in the air attack as they will on the ground. The defense, in their familiar 4-2-5 front, are anchored by returning starters who will occupy blockers and allow slashing linebackers to fill up the stat sheet. The new region realignment welcomes Spring Valley and Blythewood to Region 3 5A, and sees defending 5A Champion Gaffney and Boiling Springs depart. With Gaffney moving out, the Region Championship will be up for grabs and the Blue Eagles will look to stake their claim to the title. -Chet Tucker

2022 Season Preview

Despite a one-win season in 2021, there is an optimistic aura around the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets entering 2022. Fifth year head coach Rob McNeely moved a couple of coaches around in order to jazz up a new look Yellow Jacket offense. Fort Mill boasts a stable of running backs along with some athletic receivers in order to sustain drives and put pressure on the opponent. The Fort Mill defense will depend on accountability and discipline in order to get more three and outs while also creating turnovers. Fort Mill special team units will look for consistency with a very good punter and an accurate placekicker. Finding wins in 2022 could be a challenge as the Yellow Jackets open their season versus crosstown rival Catawba Ridge. Other non-region opponents include powerhouse Chester, Indian Land, York and Lugoff-Elgin. It gets even tougher for Fort Mill as they try to navigate a new look Region 3-5A with the likes of Blythewood, Spring Valley, Rock Hill, Clover and Milltown rival Nation Ford. Each week will be a building block as Fort Mill tries to get back to winning ways and a shot at a playoff spot. -John Turner

2022 Season Preview

The Indian Land Warriors could be on the rise in 2022 with Coach Adam Hastings entering his third season at the helm. . The increase in participation for the program is very promising as it almost doubles in terms of player turnout from 3 years ago. They bring in a strong potential group of freshman, adding much needed depth ,which was lacking in 2021. The Warriors were a very tough out last season with a 5-4 record showing a certain physicality keeping the game tight into the second halves of games. The Warriors will have to fill the spots of 11 seniors including three impact positions of WR, QB and DE. The theme this year will be young guys ‘stepping up’ in hopes of building off the success of previous years and trying to be the best versions of themselves. The schedule sees them hosting two teams from the Charlotte area in Parkwood and Palisades. The game to watch however will be Nation Ford. The Warriors took last year’s meeting, avenging an overtime loss to the Falcons a year prior. Their region is intact with the addition of Northwestern, who the Warriors face at Reservation. The road trips will be tough with an upstart York team and the defending state champion Stallions.

2022 Season Preview

The Lancaster Bruins under Marcus Surratt may have taken their lumps last year but it still came with some highs to build on for the future. The identity of the program is in the midst of being firmly established with hard work, and consistency. After only graduating 8 players, Lancaster returns a ton of experience and talent for the 2022 season. They will be heavy in juniors, and hope to see more depth than a year ago at key positions. The Bruins will be able to rotate 8 players on the offensive line, adding two tight ends to the mix. It’s a building process for Coach Suratt, who likes what he has returning to the fold. The Bruins might boast one of the tougher non-conference slates in the tri-county. Chester, Irmo and Fairfield Central will all be teams predicted to go deep in their respective regions, paired with two 5A teams in White Knoll and Rock Hill should make the Bruins very battle tested for what many are calling 4A’s best. -Tyler Cupp

2022 Season Preview

There is a lot to be excited about in 2022 as the Nation Ford Falcons enter their 13th season under head coach Michael Allen. The Falcons were a playoff team in 2021 despite a tough schedule and look to get back to the postseason in 2022 and make a deep run. The Falcons offense was high flying in 2021 and despite changes at the receiver positions, there shouldn’t be any drop-off thanks to a very talented signal caller and running backs, who will produce some big numbers behind a gelled offensive line. There were some defensive challenges for the 2021 Falcons, but with new faces in key positions, along with an experienced and salty defensive line, Nation Ford looks to make big improvements on this side of the ball in 2022. The Falcons’ kicking game is as good as it gets boasting an outstanding punter, a reliable placekicker and some speed-burning kick returners. -John Turner

2022 Season Preview

Northwestern enters 2022 as a favorite to win class 4A after dropping down from 5A in 2021. The Trojans should be able to run the ball effectively as they feature one of the state’s top offensive lines and their top two running backs. The Trojans will look to replace Mr. Football Finalist, Will Mattison, at quarterback. On Defense, Northwestern will be loaded in the defensive backfield but must answer questions up front. With a tough non-region schedule, the Trojans should be battle tested to make a deep run into the playoffs. The Trojans have made deep runs in the playoffs the last two years and seemed primed for a return to Columbia. -Chris Miller

2022 Season Preview

Change is in store for Bearcat fans this season with new offensive and defensive coordinators implementing their preferred schemes. Coach Pittman’s diamond headed cats will be young but there are some skill players who can make plays on both sides of the line of scrimmage. The Bearcats move into a revamped 5A Region 3 with local teams Clover, Fort Mill and Nation Ford. The region is rounded out by Blythewood and Spring Valley. Rock Hill will be tested early with Northwestern, South Pointe and York in pre-season but look for Bubba’s Bearcats to be in the thick of the Region 3 race as this team matures each week. -Gene Knight

2022 Season Preview

South Pointe will have the bullseye directly on their backs this year after winning it all in 2021. New head coach Bobby Collins said in his introductory news conference that he is on the hot seat immediately after the Stallions have won seven championships in their 16 years as a school. South Pointe will be tested quickly as they open the year against the defending 5A State Champion Gaffney Indians. The tough non-region schedule, however, should leave the Stallions battle tested and ready for Region. If they can navigate the state’s toughest region which includes the likes of Northwestern, York, Catawba Ridge, Indian Land, and Lancaster, the Stallions will be ready for another deep playoff run. -Chris Miller

WHY DO WE PICK FRIDAY KNIGHT’S LOSERS?

Wedo it for the fans! A big part of football is the ‘talk’ that fans, play ers and some coaches engage in during the week prior to a game. My parents taught me at an early age, “sticks and stones will break your bones, but words will never hurt you.” The content of Friday Knight’s Losers is in that same spirit with a bit of ribbing, satire, name-calling and southern football humor–all rolled together to entertain our listeners.

When the idea originated about 15 years ago, I didn’t want the show to have a typical pick’em format. We wanted it to be unique. I recalled my favorite Radio prognostication show that ran from 1958 to 2000 called Leonard’s Losers. It included fictitious characters like Leonard Postosties and Percy Peabody who selected the losers of each weekend’s college games. I adapted that format to high school football; created an animated Loser Picking Machine named J5V; and voila, Friday Knight’s Losers was born. (J5V is the number of the official Wilson football used at the high school level.)

An important part of the comedic schtick of the show is conjuring up cre ative nicknames related to the schools, their mascot, team colors or location. Here are some of my favorites: Goose Creek Gators/Duck Ditch Lizards; Nation Ford Falcons/NaFo Blackbirds; Indian Land Warriors/Panhandle Redskins; Boiling Springs Bulldogs/Drooling Hounds from the Bubbling Brooks; Rock Hill Bearcats/Diamond Headed Cats from the City on the Hill; Lancaster Bruins/The Red Rose Bears; York Cougars/Y-Town Pumas; Northwestern Trojans/Brushy Helmeted Purple Warriors; South Pointe Stallions/Big Red Mules; Great Falls Red Devils/Flopeye Hellboys; Lewisville Lions/Richburg Putty-Tats; Andrew Jackson Volunteers/Old Hickory’s Riflemen; Gaffney Indians/Broad River Peachskins; and Dorman Cavaliers/Roebuck Swashbucklers.

We do want listeners to know that I played high school football and have been involved with football for nearly 40 years as a broadcaster. I respect the sacrifice and commitment it takes to be a player, a coach or a fan and don’t take lightly la beling a team a ‘loser’ for the week. These young men work hard along with their coaches to put a team on the field and compete for 60 minutes. However, there must be a loser in each game. That is why they keep score! Over the years, fans have kept score on my predictions. At this point in time, I am about 85% correct on my weekly predictions, which is better than most of the national prognosticators.

We appreciate all of you who have been listening to Friday Knight’s Losers and hope you will continue to enjoy it. For those who haven’t heard it, we sincerely hope you will listen and experience the show this year on Interstate 107’s Red Zone on Wednesday nights and other times on Thursdays and Fridays on the OTS Network of stations. We extend many thanks to Gene Lucas of Hospitality Heating and Air for spon soring the show.

Please remember, Friday Knight’s Losers is an opinion show constructed to entertain football fans. I leave all of you with this thought, “whether you are a winner or a loser, al ways be a good sport where ever you are.” And as you return to the stadiums this season, we salute all of you, the dedicated fans of York and Lancaster Counties and Football City, USA!

BROADCASTING VETERAN AND CABLE TELEVSION PIONEER NAMED TO OTS SPORTS WALL OF FAME

Bill Beaty, Jr, a former WRHI sportscaster who led Comporium’s efforts to create CN2, will be honored as part of the 12th class of the OTS Sports Wall of Fame. Beaty, son of WRHI co-founder Bill Beaty, joins Mario Washington as one of two nominees elected by a 22-member panel made up of active OTS sportscasters and retired Wall of Fame members.

Bill grew up in the family business and learned the basics and impact of local broadcasting from his father, uncle and their partner Harper Gault. Beaty re members “working for free around the station” during his high school years, but he also found time to excel in scholastic sports. As Rock Hill High’s quarterback, he was selected MVP in his senior year and became an important part of the Bearcats’ state championship basketball run in 1966 and was named the school’s Athlete of the Year. His suc cess and passion for high school sports, set the stage for his nearly 50-year career of bringing local sports to the airwaves and creating innovative ideas that have endured for decades.

While attending Presbyterian College, Bill often returned home on weekends to assist with programing. During the summer, Beaty continued to showcase youth sports on the Radio, announcing Pony and Little League baseball games. When Northwestern High School opened in 1971, Bill joined Dennis Partlow in the foot ball booth to form the Trojans’ first broadcast team.

In 1974, Bill moved from Radio to the new frontier of Cable TV. He began his new career going neighborhood-to-neighborhood and door-to-door soliciting subscribers. In its’ infancy, selling the benefits of the “new” concept of delivering TV channels to homes through cable instead of antennas was a challenge. Beaty’s efforts proved successful and in 1978, he was appointed General Manager of Rock Hill Cable TV. His new charge included developing the local on-air component of the fledgling business. In 1988, Bill’s advocacy for high school sports coverage led to the area’s first taping and televising of high school football games. The popular game-of-the-week broadcasts continue today.

Rock Hill Cable’s local video program concept expanded to include local news coverage and in 1992, Beaty led the development of CN2. The cable channel fea tures a daily local news show with expanded information seen on other Com porium channels. Two years later, Bill’s passion for covering high school sports emerged once again with a live Friday night high school scoreboard show during fall football season. The show continued for over five years on CN2. Over the next two decades, Beaty led the expansion of additional sports and news programming on CN2 and Comporium.

In 2015, Bill retired as an Executive VP of Comporium, completing 41 years of service. During his career, Bill served on multiple professional boards, volun teer community boards and civic committees.

OTS Media is proud to welcome Bill Beaty Jr. to the OTS Sports Wall of Fame. We recognize and honor Bill for his many early contributions to WRHI’s sports coverage and for his pioneering efforts developing Cable TV and Compo rium’s strong support and coverage of local high school sports.

2022 Season Preview

Clemson is at a point where not reaching the College football playoff is considered a “down year”. Rightfully so, as the Tigers have been one of the top 2 or 3 teams in all of college football over the past 7 years. In 2022, Clemson will return to the CFP if quarterback DJ Uiagalelei can take his play to the next level. Running back Will Shipley returns to carry the load and on defense the Tigers should once again be dominating. Will the loss of both coordinators be an issue for Clemson? Former Northwestern High School Hall of Fame coach Kyle Richardson is now passing coordinator for the Tigers so we might see more explosive plays in the passing game. Clemson should be favored in nearly ev ery game on their schedule and if they take care of business in those contests, they will be one of the final four at the end of the regular season! -Chris Miller

“You’re never going to be a great program if you lose a game and your season’s over and you act like the world’s coming to an end. That’s a bad attitude and you’re probably going to live a miserable life.”

2022 Season Preview

The 2022 season is one of the most anticipated in years for the Gamecocks. With former Heisman hopeful Spencer Rattler transferring to Carolina, it gives the Gamecocks a chance in every game on their schedule. All-SEC hopefuls Jaheim Bell and Josh Vann dot an offense full of playmakers. The offensive line looks to finally be stabilized and able to help plow the way for a talented offensive backfield. On defense, Zaach Pickens anchors a defensive line for the Gamecocks that looks to be its best in nearly a decade. When looking at the Gamecocks schedule, the Arkansas and Kentucky games will likely determine the season. If Carolina can win those, then they can continue their assent of the SEC East. Also, don’t count the Gamecocks out in their home SEC opener against the defending champs from Athens, GA! Could this be the year South Carolina finally stops Clemson’s 7 year winning streak? A lot of questions for the Gamecocks this year! -Chris Miller

“I love being their coach. I love coaching this team. The work ethic, the maturity, the hunger to improve has been evident since January when we came back after the bowl win.”

2022 Season Preview

Have the Carolina Panthers finally fixed their QB issue? We should know pretty quickly. With the acquisition of Baker Mayfield, the team seems set to give the keys to the former Heisman winner. He should have plenty of help with a much better offensive line and hopefully a healthy Christian McCaffrey. If CMC stays off IR, Carolina is a threat to make the playoffs, but if their do-it-all offensive playmaker is hurt again, it could be a long year. Carolina’s defense should be strong with Brian Burns, Jeremy Chinn, and Jaycee Horn leading this young and aggressive unit. For head coach Matt Ruhle, this is a make or break year for him. If he can’t guide this team to the playoffs in his third season, he is likely gone. The NFC South is weak this year and is wide open after Tampa Bay. Can the Panthers take advantage of a favorable early schedule to start off strong? They will likely need to as the back half of the schedule is brutal! -Chris Miller

Mario Washington, a former OTS Media Operations Manager and longtime sports announcer and contributor will be honored as part of the 12th class of the OTS Sports Wall of Fame. Mario grew up in Fairfax, SC and came to Rock Hill in 2000 to pursue a Communications degree. At Winthrop University, he was mentored by Wall of Fame inductee Haney Howell and fell in love with Radio. Washington’s first broadcasting jobs were as on-site event coordinator for WRHI’s “High School Football Tonight” and board operator for OTS high school game broadcasts. He made his debut in the broadcast booth as color commentator for Lancaster and Fort Mill High football games in 2002 and became a fulltime WRHI news reporter when he graduated from Winthrop. During the same period, Mario worked closely with Chris Miller to develop, write, edit and produce the inaugural editions of the annual OTS Radio Listener Guide.

Over the next five years, WRHI was a four-time finalist for South Carolina Radio Station of the Year and won the award in 2008, 2009 and 2012.
