This time of year always brings back memories of Wigan Wakes, when the town virtually closed down for two weeks. For twelve years running my mum and dad, with six of us in tow, would always head off for a week to Golden Sands holiday camp in Rhyl. We had the time of our lives there; playing football, running round the playground and crabbing in the rock pools. The fact that quite a few local kids also went there on the same week made it even better – ready made friends to play with. We spent next to nothing whilst we were there, just the odd 10p for an ice cream. And then one year, my Dad had a big win on the horses and took us all to stay in this posh hotel on the Isle of Man. I hated it and haven’t been back since. The hotel had no cornflakes or tomato soup, which was my staple diet at that time (not in the same bowl though!). So I was constantly hungry, it rained all the time, I had nowhere to play football or run about, I knew no-one and, to cap it all, I discovered that boats across the Irish Sea are not my stomach’s favourite mode of transport. It just goes to show that kids don’t care how much you spend on a holiday as long as they have got stuff to do! But before I shoot off on my jollies, I’ve a couple of apologies to make. In the May issue of Local Life I referred to Winstanley Tennis Club’s young star Tom Dillon as Tom Hagan. Sorry Tom! Shocking mistake considering I lived opposite your family for five years – my memory’s definitely not what it used to be! Also, I would like to personally apologise to the Chief Executive of Wigan Council for comments made in the June issue in an article by Cllr Gareth Fairhurst, and make it clear that the views of Cllr Fairhurst on this matter do not reflect the views of Local Life. See you soon,

Flying High

Those charitable souls at the Orrell & District Townswomen’s Guild were busy in 2011/2012 raising a magnificent total of £2,106 money for their chosen charity; the North West Air Ambulance. A special mention goes to Audrey Ware and Dorothy Palmer who completed the Morecambe Bay walk raising over £600. The rest of the money was raised at a coffee morning and in raffles and donations. The North West Air Ambulance is a charity which has been flying lifesaving missions throughout the North West region since 1999. The two helicopters fly seven days a week, 365 days a year from bases at Blackpool Airport and City Airport in Manchester, and are called out on average five times a day, rising up to ten in the summer. It costs in excess of £4.2 million per year to maintain both aircraft, but with almost no central government or lottery funding, we rely on the generosity of our supporters. Members of the group recently visited the NWAA at Barton Aerodrome to present them with the cheque.

Open Day

The Orrell and Billinge Network recently held a successful Open Day at Salem Church Hall on Church Street. The great and good turned out, including the local MP Yvonne Forvargue, and exchanged some interesting views and opinions. The data collated from the event suggests that the overdevelopment of the area without an adequate infrastructure to support it is the issue that concerns most residents, closely followed by the dearth of health facilities. The lack of a community centre in the area was third on the list of concerns from residents.

Another issue that raised strong views was the impact that users of Catts Gym have had on residents of Church Drive, with their indiscriminate parking on roads and pavements near a busy road junction, and the build-up of litter around the Church Drive area also caused concern. The next meeting of the Orrell and Billinge Network takes place on Wednesday 5th September at 7pm at the Methodist Church on Church Drive.

Beginners Yoga

Twice weekly Dru Yoga classes for beginners are now being held at the Grange Community Centre in Winstanley. The classes take place on Thursdays between 6pm-7pm and Fridays between 1.30pm and 2.30pm. Conservatory Living is a Myth! There – I’ve said it! All those glossy colour Sunday supplements extoling the virtues of having a conservatory; extra family space to relax in the sunshine without actually braving the outside elements are just an overblown sales campaign to sell conservatories. Whilst they are high on our wish list when it comes to improving our homes, conservatories rarely live up to expectations. A conservatory is supposed to be a calm and tranquil space, one that lets us linger over the Sunday papers without having to put on an extra layer or jumping up to retrieve the lifestyle section from the rose bushes. In reality, you probably have a love/hate relationship with what can only be described as your glass box. They overheat in the summer and winter temperatures rival the North Pole; all in all you start to feel like you haven’t benefited from the extra room you paid for. In fact, research shows that, in the British climate, a conservatory in unlikely to provide more than two hours of comfortable temperatures per day. Well, before you seal those French doors shut for good we’d like to tell you about a local company who might just have the answer to all your conservatory woes. Freedom Conservatory Roof Conversions promise to give you back the extra room you have always dreamt about. With their innovative ceiling modifications they can make your conservatory up to

Freedom did our porch and conservatory and we now have balanced heat throughout the down stairs and I am saving £15.00 per week alone on Gas. 22 Local Life

90% warmer in the winter and up to 75% cooler in the summer! After suffering with the same problems in his own conservatory, the Billinge-based owner of Freedom Conservatory Roof Conversions Paul Stubbs came up with a revolutionary idea to combat the problems associated with plastic ceilings. Freedom has already helped people save on their energy bills and given them a room that they can use 365 days of the year. The process does not alter the external appearance of your roof or remove any part of your conservatory causing a minimal amount of disruption to your home and because the work is internal there is no need for any planning permission. Paul says “Following our three-day installation you will no longer need to look at an ugly plastic roof, you will have a plastered and painted ceiling with a bespoke lighting and audio package of your choice. Before we plasterboard we lag the plastic roof with insulation that helps to deflect heat away and keeps heat in and the material we use meets all the current building regulations and fire certificates.”

So if you would like to claim back the use of your conservatory and possibly save on your energy bills, call the team now on 08456 860542 for more details.

Well done Freedom for the best idea I have seen since double glazing! I now have a 7 metre lounge with Freedom doing a full makeover and that new ceiling looks amazing in the conservatory especially with the new lighting system that was fitted. Thanks - Mr Dale from Winstanley

Totally Perfect Bathrooms

Before

There’s no better feeling than slipping into a hot bath of bubbles, for me a bathroom has to be spotless before I can relax and feel really clean. After years of dedicated service a bathroom can start to show a few age spots that you think no amount of elbow grease is ever going to remove! And you’d be right conventional cleaning won’t have your bathroom looking spic and span, but we know a company that can help and you won’t have to spend an arm and a leg. Total Bathroom Restoration are experts in restoring bathrooms to their former glory all over the North West, and all at the fraction of the cost of a new one! Owner Ian Read believes that almost any bathroom can be rescued from the damage caused by unsightly mould and mildew that occurs naturally over time. From his experience in property management he realised that most bathroom problems showed a consistent pattern; leaks, grout failure, mouldy silicone, chipped bath trays and cloudy shower screens. Does this sound familiar? Ian and his team now have bathroom restoration down to a fine art and can restore any bathroom to its original state whilst causing you the minimum amount of disruption. Think ice-white grout, perfect tiles and a bathroom to be proud of; that’s the service that Total Bathroom Restoration can offer to you.

After

Don’t take our word for it - here’s what our latest customer had to say…

Mr Summers of Newton-le-W illows told Local Life, “I wanted to take this opp ortunity to thank the team for their outstanding work”. “The job was awkward and other trades had tried and failed to rectify what was a poor initial install, despite this the team dea lt with all the issues and managed to fully restore the tiled shower enclosure with a finish far superior than the original installation”. “Despite being a messy job the Bathroom was left clean and tidy and read y to use the next day. We were grateful for your expertise in delivering exactly what was required .”

Ian says “As well as restoring your bathroom we can also help you bring to life an outdated bathroom with a few simple tricks. We can source designer taps, slim line shower trays and even help with flooring and decorating. We are really proud to be able to offer a full bathroom makeover service that we know you’ll love.” Don’t just shut the door on your dull and outdated bathroom, breathe a new lease of life into it with a Total Bathroom makeover, call the team now on 01257 368 021 or 0800 542 9984. Cod in Heaven

There comes a time in life when you get a bit tired of trying out all these new trendy cuisines; the hottest are currently Scandinavian, something called Pan-Asian, and anyone for Ethiopian? It all feels a bit ‘emperor’s new clothes’ for me sometimes. So in this, the most British of summers for a while, (the Jubilee, the London Olympics and the incessant rain!) we decided to go back to the best of British and pop out for a chippy tea at the new Sharpy’s Restaurant which has recently opened next to the DW Stadium.

Our first impression?

Sharpy’s is urban and contemporary, with a modern warehouse feel to it, and there is bags of room at this place, which encompasses a restaurant, bar and take away. With sports memorabilia and flat screen TV’s (muted, thankfully!) on the walls, and free wi-fi on offer, Sharpy’s succeeds in creating a relaxed and comfortable environment for all the family. The place is super clean – you could have eaten off of the floor when we were there – and the ambience at Sharpy’s was friendly and good natured. But enough of all that, what about the food? In sports parlance, we kicked off with the Smoked Mackerel and Cod Fish Cakes, and the Filo Prawns. The fish cakes were beautiful, obviously home-made, with a surprisingly delicate flavour given the tendency of smoked mackerel to overpower a dish like this. The crunchy exterior contrasted superbly with the creamy filling, and the delicious horseradish and dill mayonnaise added in a welcome touch of extra flavour. In my experience, Filo Prawns can be a bit of a dodgy dish. Overcook it and you’re left with a dish which taste and texture resembles day-old chewing gum wrapped in something like a taco shell. Not this time though; the fresh prawns were plumpness personified and oh-so-juicy too, and the filo pastry was lightness itself! Combined with a sweet chilli sauce which carried a kick like Ali Al Habsi’s, this dish was exceptionally tasty; quite simply the best example of Filo Prawns that I have ever had anywhere.

Both starters were beautifully presented, generously portioned and served with exceptionally fresh crispy salad. If I’d dined on starters like these at fancy fine dining palaces at twice the price, I would still have raved about them…they were that good, so top marks for the starters! As chefs say though, you’re only as good as your last dish, so let us move onto the main courses. My better half opted for the Cod and Chips served, of course, with mushy peas and I was left rubbing my hands waiting for the Steak and Ale Pie and Chips. I’m all for restaurants using local produce and Sharpy’s tries hard in this respect even down to the Ellesy’s vinegar! The Steak and Ale pie was one of Poole’s finest and very tasty! The chips were gorgeous, just like my mum used to make! Actually, I’m just trying to spare her feelings here, they were actually even better than my mum used to make – sorry Mum! Halfway through our main courses, we swapped over our plates and I had my chance to try out the Cod. This was cooked to perfection in a light crispy batter, the fish gently flaking away at the touch of my knife. ‘Melt in the mouth’ is a much overused phrase in food literature, which is why I never use it, but this cod is thoroughly deserving of it! Oh my goodness, it was the ultimate and, four days later as I’m writing this piece, my mouth is still watering at the thought of that cod!

cream, was fruity and moist and went down a treat, and the tasty latticed Apple Pie was served with a delicious vanilla ice cream. My overriding impression from Sharpy’s was of a well-run and extremely clean restaurant charging reasonable prices for some top quality food. The atmosphere was relaxed, the staff were friendly and efficient, and it’s a great venue for families and sports fans alike. So take some quality time out this summer and pop down to Sharpy’s with the rest of the family; the best of British has never tasted so good!

in the scientific community that a cure can be found. Human clinical trials are in their early stages. But there is no government funding for this life saving research. At the moment the only way it can continue is if charities raise money for research. When Andy approached the Rugby League fraternity and spoke about the situation he was told they would do whatever they could. And every time you see a player celebrating a try by linking their fingers, in what has become known as the JJ Salute, they are showing people that they are supporting Joining Jack. It isn’t just rugby players supporting the charity; actress Lucy Jo Hudson and her husband Alan Halsall (Tyrone from Coronation Street) have backed Joining Jack and only last weekend Rio Ferdinand, Ant and Dec and the cast of Emmerdale were pictured making the JJ Salute. But it is not just about famous people; Joining Jack needs the people of Wigan on his team.

Joining Jack

If you follow rugby, which many of us here in Wigan do, you may have noticed that a number of rugby players, Sam Tomkins included, have started to link their fingers together as they celebrate scoring a try. What’s that all about? Last year ex-Wigan Rugby player Andy Johnson and his wife Alex received the devastating news that their four year old son Jack has an incurable muscle wasting disease called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). They learned more about how the condition was expected to progress and the fatal impact it would eventually have on their little boy. There’s no treatment for DMD at the moment, other than steroids which have many serious side effects and can only slow the condition down, not cure it. By the time Jack reaches adolescence, he will no longer be able to walk, and he will lose the use of every single muscle in his body thereafter. Eventually his heart and lungs will fail and he will die. Jack’s dad Andy, who used to be a pupil at St Peter in Orrell, decided that he and Jack’s mum Alex could not stand back and allow DMD to destroy the life of their son. Not without putting up a fight. They set up a charity called Joining Jack with the aim of funding research to find a cure for DMD. The cause of DMD is known and for the first time there is hope 32 Local Life

There’s a website www.JoiningJack.org which explains all about the charity. It also lets you how you can get involved. There’s information there about forthcoming events and fundraising opportunities, as well as details about how you can help. Joining Jack’s mission is such an important one because DMD is one of the most common fatal genetic disorders to affect children around the world. Approximately one in every 3,500 boys is born with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and 20,000 new cases are reported each year. When times are tight, it can be tough to put money aside to support charities, but many of Wigan’s residents have risen up as one to support this brave little boy. Quite simply, Jack (and thousands of others like him) needs our help to stay alive, so any help you can give will be much appreciated.

Your Health Natural first aid for bad backs

As my ninth anniversary as a Chiropractor approaches, I would like to share a number of simple, free or inexpensive ways in which you can help relive a back that’s just ‘gone’. It’s important to recognise that your bad back has likely resulted simply from your day to day life - any machine that’s in constant use is going to break down sooner or later! Whilst doing two months’ worth of DIY on a bank holiday is never a good idea, it will simply have been the spark that lit the powder keg stored up over the years. For decades, the standard medical advice for low back pain was to rest in bed for anything up to six weeks. Research shows this compounds back pain by causing back muscles to weaken, shrink and stiffen, ligaments and tendons to become tight, joints stiffen and depression. Bed rest is probably the worst treatment for low back pain that I know of. I always advocate what has come to be known as active rest, which sounds contradictory, but let me explain. When your back has recently become a problem, it’s essential that you slow down and keep stress off your body. This means rest by avoiding lifting, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling or carrying for at least for a few weeks. The active part begins during avoiding the preceding activities; you keep active by regularly moving, changing position, going for short walks, doing light household tasks etc. You may experience some discomfort during light activity, but this is normal and will improve with time. Many people find taking pain killers and antiinflammatories helpful, although they are associated with a number of side effects. So speak to your pharmacist first, and make sure they know if you are taking any other medicines. Ice is a powerful, safe anti-inflammatory. You can use unopened bags of frozen vegetables placed in a dry tea towel, across the painful part of your back, though if you have had heart or circulatory problems though, don’t use ice.

Bag it and Bin It

Each year thousands of complaints are received by local authorities about dog mess. Well, a campaign by Councillor Clive Morgan has bore fruit with the installation of new dog waste bins across Winstanley, following representation from constituents. Cllr Morgan is now calling on dog owners to ensure that they ‘Bag it and bin it’. Councillor Morgan said: “The overwhelming majority of dog owners are responsible and clear up after their dogs, but a small minority are allowing grassed areas to become dog toilets and it is not fair to the wider community. Dog poop can cause serious illness and disability to people and whilst it is great news that the council have installed new bins across the area, it is also the case that dog owners must take personal responsibility for their dog’s actions and be good neighbours. There are no excuses. Fouling is unacceptable.” Councillor Morgan is pictured with one of the news bin in the Highfield area.

Art Exhibition

Garswood Art Club are holding their annual exhibition this month at the Methodist Church on Victoria Road and everyone is welcome! The exhibition opens on Friday 20th July from 6.30pm-10pm when free wine and a buffet will be served, and continues the following day (Saturday 21st July) between 9am-4pm, when refreshments available at a small charge.

If in any doubt, always seek the advice of a health professional immediately. However, in more general terms, if the pain isn’t subsiding within days to weeks of starting the above measures, then seeking advice is recommended. If the pain is worsening or there are symptoms such as pins and needles, numbness or weakness in your legs, seek advice immediately. Dr Mike Paull, Chiropractor. Please note this article is not intended to substitute the diagnosis, treatment or advice of a healthcare professional.

Chris F oy Introduction

Chris was born and bred in Sutton Leach St Helens and he attended the Marshall’s Cross Infants School where he enjoyed many years of mischief with his best friend Mike. Chris currently lives in Bold with his wife Bev. He started his career as a professional football referee in 1983, before being promoted to the Premier League assistant referees list in 1995. Six years later, Chris made the step up to the role of referee in the Premier League. Since his first appointment as an official, Chris has refereed some notable matches including the finals of the Football League Cup and the FA Cup.

First memory you have

My first memory is of falling off the garden gate. It was my own fault I was told not to climb on it as I was far too small and I ended up hurting myself.

First school you attended

This was Marshalls Cross Infants School in Sutton Leach. I loved school but the head teacher at the time Miss Bithell was legendary! We were all really scared of her we did as we were told.

First job you had

My first job was at the United Glass Factory working as an Apprentice Bricklayer. My first wage was £23 a week but the camaraderie between the workers was great, they were a top bunch of blokes and I loved every minute of it there.

38 Local Life

First car you bought

I’m going to sound spoiled here but my first car was actually a gift from my dad so I’m not sure how much it cost. It was a VW Beetle; I’m sure he didn’t like me but I was and still am extremely grateful!

First house you bought

I stepped onto the property ladder when I bought a semi-detached house in Sutton Leach. It was my dream home and I was so proud to be moving in. I had spent my money on buying the house and I couldn’t afford to furnish it, it didn’t really help that the previous occupant even took the washing line!

First pub or club you visited

The first pub I visited was The Cross Keys, it was a little pub in Llandudno, and I visited there with my parents. Well I say visited, I wasn’t allowed inside and I never took too kindly to standing outside with a bottle www.locallife247.co.uk

of pop and a packet of crisps.

First record you bought

I actually can’t remember the first record that I bought, but if I could I’m sure I would be embarrassed. I like all types of music; I keep trying to tell myself I am young.

Last holiday you had

The last holiday I had was a working holiday; I went to Barbados as a referee. As you can imagine it was really hard work! Bev and I are planning to have a quick getaway to Spain before pre-season training starts.

First best friend

My best friend all throughout my school years was a boy named Mike Pratt. We had some laughs, the usual stuff really just getting into mischief. He was a great lad and a true friend at school, so much so I trusted his mum to cut my hair!

First kiss

Well I’ll have to be careful here as my wife will read this and it could get me into a lot of trouble. I’ll play it safe and say that it was probably a sloppy one off my grandma.

Last restaurant you visited I went out for a meal with my wife Bev and two good friends Chris and Kath; we went to the Maplewood Restaurant in Widnes. It serves authentic Cantonese cuisine, the food is excellent and we rave about it all the time.

Last DIY task attempted

I happen to like a spot of DIY; my last attempt was repairing a leak from the bottom of the bath. It turned out to be a very successful mission but I had to get it right; if I had got it wrong the ceiling would have collapsed!

Last disagreement you had

Well in my profession you’d think I would have a few disagreements, but it really isn’t the case. I am an exceptionally easy going person and rarely fall out with anyone.

Last time you went shopping

The last shopping trip I went on was a day out to Liverpool with Bev. I quite like a day out shopping and especially in the city; I love the city and all it offers.

Money & Investment Time in the Market, Not Timing the Market! Because of the news flow coming out of Europe and the political jiggery going on at the minute writing a piece on the markets is extremely difficult as sentiment can change the position within a matter of days… That said, today is the 13th June (Greek vote at the weekend- could my timing be any worse…?) I will endeavour to share my thoughts on the current situation. As we move into the summer month’s uncertainty surrounding Europe continues to unsettle the markets. Despite a strong start to the year we have seen markets fall in April and May as politicians continue to attempt to address the upheaval in Greece and the alarm bells that are ringing in Spain. One of the most well known stock market catchphrases of ‘Sell in May and go away, and return on St Legers Day’ would have served investors well last year, however history has shown the opposite. Shares have risen in 29 of the last 50 years between May and September.

Sell in May and go away, and return on St Legers Day? Being fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful has been fruitful for investors in the past. If there is a huge amount of bad news (as there is currently) normally markets over-react, and it is at times like this that excellent buying opportunities can be found. At the opposite end of the scale, there is no investor fear at the top of a rising market but the reality is that this should be a time for caution. So where are we today? Corporate results remain very encouraging as profits continue to grow and dividend streams remain attractive. It is purely sentiment around the European issues that is depressing the share prices of a number of very successful companies. As sentiment improves around

the Macro economic position I would expect these shares to move ahead to reflect the “real value” which is ultimately driven by the corporate results and business prospects.

Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful A lot of investors are experiencing fluctuations in their portfolios at present and it is very important to remember that even the most successful funds experience periods of poor performance. One of

40 Money & Investment brought to you by Prosper Independent Financial Advisers

Fidelity’s most successful funds delivered a return on average of 20% per annum during the 80’s and the 90’s however the fund manager believes that the average investor only made just 1% or 2% pa. The reason for this is that the fund did not deliver these returns smoothly and investors did not stay invested for the whole period. Typically people only invested after seeing three or four years of fantastic growth only to sell out three or four years later when performance tailed off. “Time in, not timing the market” is another important aspect to successful investing.

Time in, not timing the market A number of investment strategists remain positive on the outlook for equity markets. Notably, Brewin Dolphin stockbrokers Chief Strategist, Mike Lenhoff,

upgraded his 2012 year end target in March of this year for the FTSE 100 Index from around 5,850 to up nearer 6,400. This does look somewhat optimistic at the current time but with six months of the year remaining and a number of options still open to politicians and central bankers there is very good chance that, with profitability remaining robust, we will see an improving sentiment in equity markets before the end of the year. The value of investments can go down as well as up, this means you could get back less than you invested. Therefore all investments should be regarded with a long term view. No comments within this article are a personal recommendation. If you’re considering investments please do not hesitate to contact us for advice.

landmarks and local areas, and it will remind you of the lovely countryside that lies between Orrell, Billinge and Pimbo. Although we did the walk just a couple of weeks ago in between periods of heavy rain, the going was firm and our boots left un-muddied.

www.locallife247.co.uk

Pimbo to Hangman’s Woods

Park up in the back car park at Pimbo Garden Centre – the owners have kindly agreed to accommodate walkers but you must be back by 5pm, when the gates close. When you exit the Garden Centre turn right and head uphill up Pimbo Lane. After 500 yards, the road forks; bear left and stay on Pimbo Lane.

You’ll walk for a further ½ mile, passing a few farms and you’ll also go through an ‘s’ bend with the Welcome to St Helens road sign. Approximately 50 yards after the ‘s’ bend, you turn left up the public footpath. Follow the footpath (which is known as Robins Lane although is it quite unsubstantial) in line with the telegraph poles right Orrell d oa dR up through the field for 525 yards. Once you reach a public footpath sign on a post near some trees turn left. The buildings on the right in the distance are Promised Land Farm and in the left in the distance is Hangman’s Wood, reputed to have been the hiding place of a local highwayman.

Hangman’s Woods to Tontine

Follow the footpath running parallel to a brook on the right hand side for a further 200 yards until you reach another public footpath sign. Turn right across the brook and dip under the trees. Follow the left hand perimeter of the field for 150 yards. There is a wooden copse on your left hand side; once you have reached the end of the copse, you can either turn left or go straight on. At this point turn left and head uphill. Once you reach the trees at the top end of the field, bear right toward the farm buildings and then turn left shortly afterwards before you reach the first barn and carry on heading uphill.

www.locallife247.co.uk

When you reach the top of that field, where the telegraph pole and the public footpath sign are, turn left. At the edge of that field, look out for another public footpath sign on a post, and then carry straight on ahead towards Heaton House. The footpath then encounters a wide dirt track running between Heaton House and Mountains Farm. Cross over the track and go straight ahead through the field. In the distance you’ll see the public footpath sign on the post near the trees. Once you reach the trees carry on in the same direction through the open field. Once you reach the far side of that field, turn right and take the well-defined pathway that runs parallel with the trees and the brook for a further 550 yards, ignor-

ing two pathways to the left that both lead to Pimbo Bushes. You are now arriving at the highest point of the walk and, on a clear day, you’re treated to some beautiful views of surrounding landmarks. You’ll then go down a gentle decline and before you reach the corner of that field, you’ll come to an opening on the left, where you will see a public footpath sign with two options. Take the left hand option and head toward the red brick chimneys that mark the path of the Up Holland railway tunnel, leaving the Sand Brook behind you. After 450 yards you’ll pass a covered reservoir on your left hand side; carry on in the same direction down the track, which will eventually take you uphill, passing a rather random lone stile on the way. Once you reach some metal fencing on your right, you are standing on top of the aforementioned tunnel. Descend the hill, hop over the wooden stile and then turn right in the direction of Sandford Road. Once you reach the road, turn left down Kilburn Road and then take the first left up Lawns Avenue.

Tontine to Pimbo

When you reach the gate to Lawns Farm, go through the metal stile on the left hand side of the gate. This is a working farm so keep all dogs on a lead at this point. Head straight through the farm in the same direction and you’ll see a public footpath symbol directing you up the footpath on the right hand side of a stone wall. It’s up hill all the way to this point! At the

After 350 yards, you’ll reach another gate with a rather rickety wooden stile on the right hand side of it. Hop across, walk past the chimney and keep heading in the same direction for 500 yards towards a couple of impressive stone houses; the hamlet of Higher Pimbo. Once you have reached Higher Pimbo, turn right and head downhill down a lane for 550 yards until you reach Pimbo Lane. Turn right and Pimbo Garden Centre is situated directly on your left. You can take the weight off your feet with a cup of coffee and some cake in Rigby’s Café in the Garden Centre before heading home!

BACK IN THE

Has Peugeot got its groove back? The 208 1.6 THP suggests so. Andy Enright drives it. With a punchy turbocharged petrol engine, bags of front end grip and a decent ride, the latest Peugeot 208 1.6 THP might not count as a hot hatch, but as a warm one it’s absolutely one of the best. Peugeot were once the masters of the fast hatchback. Is this a first step back towards supremacy? I never feel as if I’ve really arrived in Portugal until I see an old dear waddling up a street with no pavements whilst carrying no fewer than six shopping bags. Get a bit rural and they’re everywhere, gently perspiring their way home from the local supermercado. This one must have thought this journey was her last. In my defence, she was on the outside of a really nicely surfaced long hairpin bend and I was at the wheel of a Peugeot 208 1.6 THP. This is a car that’s tough to drive at modest speeds and a big sweeper of a hairpin seemed like an invitation to extend it a little. We all get a bit dewyeyed for the old 205 GTI, but I’m fairly confident that if I’d attempted a corner entry at that speed in a 205, it would have eaten the old lady tailgate first. As it stood, she got some warning from the squealing tyres and the maniacal laughter from two journalists inside. She didn’t look very impressed, but national blame was avoided as the car was French registered. C’est la vie. 54 Local Life

It’s hard to talk about the Peugeot 208 1.6 THP without talk gravitating to the steering and the discussion is about the feel, or lack of, and I’d be the first to admit that the electrically-assisted steering isn’t exactly rich in detailed feedback. To counter that, it is accurate and quick, so once you’ve developed a level of trust, you feel a good deal more comfortable pushing the car a bit harder. And push it you will. Although this 156PS engine isn’t as manic as the 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol unit that’s sure to be a holiday hire favourite, it’s got enough about it to serve up a decent slug of entertainment. The tiny turbocharger helps it to 60mph in 7.8 seconds on the way to a top speed of 134mph, and there’s virtually no turbo lag at all. The 208 represents a new design direction for Peugeot in this class. The detailing is crisp, the surfacing neat and the overall shape is extremely cohesive. I particularly liked the rear lights with their claw-shaped cut outs and the swage lines on the door and bonnet that look almost sharp enough to deter you from drawing a finger across them. The interior is a major step ahead too, with higher quality finishes and a very neat infotainment system feature, while both 3 and 5 door models offer plenty more occupant and luggage space. Both three and www.locallife247.co.uk

five-door body styles are offered with most powerplants in the 208 range but, for the time being at least, the 1.6 THP engine only comes in the three-door body. If you were smarting about the lack of choice when it came to body styles, the news doesn’t get a great deal better with trim levels. In short, there is no choice. The 208 1.6 THP is only offered in upscale Feline trim. For around £17,000, your car will come equipped with 17-inch Oxygen grey alloy wheels, electric, heated and folding door mirrors, an SR1 radiator grille in satin Stealth Grey paint with a dark chrome bead, a sports rear spoiler and chrome exhaust tailpipe as well as colour coded mirrors. Directional front fog lights and rear parking sensors are also fitted. Drop inside and you’ll find sports seats with Eclipse Premium Trim, a panoramic glass roof with ambient lighting, a multifunction 7-inch colour touch screen with USB / 3.5mm jack and Bluetooth with steering wheel mounted controls. ESP stability control is fitted as standard as are eight airbags and cruise control. Driven at speeds that won’t horrify the local geriatrics, this 208 will average 48.7mpg. Even around town, that figure only drops to 35.8mpg. www.locallife247.co.uk

The Peugeot 208 has to count as my pleasant surprise of the year so far. I must admit that given Peugeot’s recent run of small cars, I wasn’t actually expecting to have fun behind the wheel but I did. If you were thinking of a MINI Cooper but were put off by, well, the fact that it’s a MINI, try the Peugeot. It runs the same engine and feels a far less ostentatious piece of kit. It’s handsome without ever appearing showy and is priced well.

Strawberry Buttermilk Pudding Cake with Mascarpone A delicious summery treat, perfect for serving while watching the Olympics. Serves 9-12. Preparation time 25 minutes plus 30 minutes cooking time.

Ingredients 60 ml cup water 1 ½ tsp cornflour 160g caster sugar (100g for the strawberry syrup and 60g for the sponge) 300g sliced strawberries 125 g plain flour 1 ¾ tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt 1 large egg 115g buttermilk (or yoghurt) 115g unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly 1 tsp vanilla extract 225g Mascarpone cheese 3 tbsp icing sugar

Method 1. Preheat your oven to 200C. Butter a 20cm x 20cm glass or ceramic baking dish. Set aside. 2. In a small saucepan, combine the water, cornflour and 100g of the sugar. Bring to a simmer, add sliced strawberries, and cook for about 3 minutes or until the strawberries become slightly syrupy. Remove from heat and set aside. 3. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt and the remaining 60g sugar. 4. In a large bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk (or yoghurt), melted butter and vanilla extract. Whisk in the flour mixture until just combined, be careful not to over mix. 5. Add half of the strawberry mixture to the baking dish, spreading it evenly over the bottom. Next, place the batter in large dollops over the fruit and spread evenly, being careful not to mix the fruit with the batter. Finally, spoon the rest of the fruit mixture over the batter, making sure to distribute that evenly as well. 6. Bake for 30 minutes or until top is slightly brown. Cool on a wire rack for at least five minutes before serving. 7. Meanwhile whip the mascarpone and icing sugar in a large bowl until light and airy. Top each slice of pudding with a generous spoonful of mascarpone.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder When it comes to my lawn I’m a bit of a neat freak. In summer I have been known to mow it three times a week - obsessive Hubby calls it - he probably has a point but I wouldn‘t admit it to him. I get real satisfaction from trimming the edges too so that not a blade of grass is out of place. Once a fortnight I am bent double with lawn weed killer in hand, scouring the turf looking for any weed that dares to try and flourish. In fact I think I’ve missed my calling as a bowling green caretaker. I have however recently met two couples who actually prefer the look of a lumpy bumpy lawn which is full of daisies! Try as I might to persuade them into having brand new level grass without a weed in sight, they would not be moved. They prefer a more natural look rather than the manicured look I crave. And yet when it comes to my borders, I like them full and a little unruly. I remember

once when showing someone round my garden (sorry that sounds rather grand, I live on a modern housing estate - not a country estate) they referred to what I call my pretty little cottage garden border, as the wild garden! I like to see plants jostling with each other for space (see attached photo of my garden this spring) whilst other people prefer more ordered borders with plants lined up like soldiers on parade. All of this has got me thinking about how different garden styles suit different people and that all gardens, in their own way, are beautiful. It really does come down to people’s personal tastes and preferences and that is why I love being a garden designer. Each project is a challenge and quite unique but well worth the effort - yes a bit like Hubby - challenging, quite unique but well worth the effort.
