The copy deadline for this issue is Thursday 21st June. Local Life is published every month. Distribution areas will alternate each month between two separate edition areas: The St Helens and Prescot edition is delivered to over 12,500 private homes and businesses in Rainhill, Eccleston, Prescot, Eccleston Park, Windle, Knowsley Village, Prescot Road and part of Nutgrove. Copies of this edition are also available to pick up free from Tesco Extra Stores in Peasley Cross and Prescot. The St Helens and Ashton edition is delivered to over 12,500 private homes and businesses in Rainford, Billinge, Newton-le-Willows, Garswood, Crank, Kings Moss and parts of Ashton and Moss Bank.

I started thinking recently about two words that mean a lot to Local Life and what our lives would be like without them. Community spirit, we hear this a lot but what does it actually mean to us? Well, without community spirit there wouldn’t be village fayres or concerts, charity galas or art exhibitions. Needless to say the magazine you’re reading now wouldn’t exist because we’d have nothing to tell you. We were invited recently to attend the Foster Carer’s celebration supper; each year the Council’s fostering services hosts an event to celebrate the hard work and dedication of foster carers in St Helens. To say we were humbled by some of the stories we heard on the night is a massive understatement. To see the difference that these big-hearted people make to children’s lives is astounding and to quote one little boy, his foster parents have made his new home ‘the best place in the world’. June is a great month to kick start your involvement in the community and this issue of Local Life will show you just what community spirit can achieve! We have details of local Jubilee celebrations in your area and two events that are worthy of a mention are the annual Prescot Festival and the Rainhill Gala. Check out p14 for the rundown on the Prescot Festival in June and Rainhill Gala’s big day is on Bank any Holiday Monday (4th June). Last year the our comp gala raised more than £6,000 for local Market y e area’s causes and there will be lots going on this in th magazine year so have a look at p36 for full details. premier om just fr Advertise nth + VAT For all of you community groups out there per mo 19 £ don’t forget to let us know what you are ife on L l a planning so we can give you some free c o publicity. Peoples’ Picnic!

Forget what you’ve heard about troublesome teens - because young people across St Helens are about to break down barriers in a major community project! As the next half term holiday looms you won’t have to worry about the kids being at a loose end as a group of youngsters has organised a range of activities, culminating in a family event – the Peoples’ Picnic in Victoria Park on Friday 8 June. The idea came from the young people who attended the recent local democracy week, which gave them the chance to raise issues of importance to them. During the half term week volunteers can learn face painting, balloon modelling, magic tricks and circus skills to perform at the picnic. There will also be a picnic bake off where young people will be asked to bake cakes and biscuits to serve at the picnic. For the more energetic amongst you the council has arranged for a mobile skate park (for 8 to 17 year olds) in the town centre on 6th June

Local Life

Dozens of people have already offered to help out at the event – but more are needed. We were grateful for your expertise in delivering exactly what was required .”

Ian says “As well as restoring your bathroom we can also help you bring to life an outdated bathroom with a few simple tricks. Dish of the Month Chocolate Sorbet

Light, refreshing and gluten-free! Prep time: 15 mins Freezing time: 3-4 hours plus chilling time

Serves 4-6

Ingredients 100g / 3 ½ oz good quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids) broken into pieces 100ml / 3 ½ fl oz filtered or mineral water 60g / 2 ½ oz cocoa powder

For the sugar syrup 250ml / 9 fl oz filtered or mineral water 150g / 5oz caster sugar

Method 1. Prepare the sugar syrup by placing the sugar and water into a saucepan. Bring to the boil without stirring and leave to simmer until the sugar crystals have dissolved (about 5 minutes). Remove from the heat. 2. Melt the dark chocolate in a heat-proof bowl suspended over a saucepan of just-simmering water. When it has melted add the 100ml / 3 ½ fl oz water and reheat until warm. Whisk in the cocoa, then add the melted chocolate, whisking together until smooth. 3. Let the mixture cool, then chill it by placing the bowl of sorbet mixture over a bowl of water filled with ice cubes. Stir occasionally but don’t let any water splash into the sorbet mix. 4. For the smoothest results churn the chilled mixture in an ice cream maker until ready. 5. If you don’t have an ice cream maker then place the mixture in a shallow bowl and freeze it in the coldest part of the freezer. Take it out every hour and whisk it to break up the ice crystals. Made this way it will have a slightly more granular texture but it will still be delicious. 6. Remove from the freezer about twenty minutes before serving.

Serving suggestions Although this is lovely on its own you could try serving it with: 1. Strawberries dipped in melted chocolate, then chilled. 2. Rich butter shortbread (obviously not if you’re on a gluten-free diet!). 3. With a glass of coffee, chocolate or mint liqueur poured over.

After months of negotiations between the council, the leaseholder Excel, the shopping centre owners and Merseytravel, the car park will now feature 24 free spaces for up to two hours and 27 spaces for park and ride. Carl Birchall of The Village Butcher in the village added, “This is a much needed shot in the arm and a necessary boost. This is something we have been campaigning about for some time, we need all the help we can in the current climate so this is very good news.”

Downy Duckling Days Free parking in Rainhill

Retailers in Rainhill were jumping for joy after they heard that St. Helens Council were able to provide free parking in the village. Retailers were experiencing a downturn in trade following the introduction of paid for parking and sought the council’s help to try and secure free short-term parking. Their prayers have been answered as free parking will now be available at the Dane Court shopping area. Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Urban Regeneration, Housing and Culture at St. Helens Council, Barrie Grunewald said, “This has been a very complicated issue but we have prevailed and shoppers, retailers and commuters have got the desired result. I am delighted that the council has been able to negotiate the two hours free parking which will bring very significant benefits for retailers in this area.”

Martin Mere is presenting a series of Downy Duckling Days from Saturday 2nd to Sunday 10th June at their Wetland Centre near Burscough. Happy Birthday Willowbrook! 2012 is a landmark year for Willowbrook as the hospice team celebrates its 15th anniversary. It will be a time to remember the patients they have cared for over the years, and the family and friends they have supported. It will also be a timely reminder for the staff and patients to offer their thanks for the invaluable support they have received from the surrounding community. Fundraising began in 1990 after local residents campaigned for a Hospice and a team of dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly over the next five years to raise the formidable target of £1.8 million. These funds were needed to build the Hospice from the ground up and fundraisers organised concerts, walks, jazz nights and much more. The local communities pulled together to raise as much money as they could, charity shops opened and the Hospice Lottery was launched.

An Appeal Fund thermometer was placed outside St Helens Town Hall to show supporters just how much they were raising and the fantastic support meant that hopes began to soar as the £1 million mark was reached in February 1995. St Helens Council generously committed 4 acres of land on the boundary between Knowsley and St Helens as the Hospice’s new home. The dream became a reality in 1996 when the building work started and Lord Derby, a patron and supporter of the Hospice, turned the first sod and the work at Portico Lane officially began. Willowbrook Hospice opened its doors on 20th July 1997 and has been serving residents of St Helens and Knowsley ever since. From the moment the dream was realised in 1997, things began to grow and ambitions of bigger and better things emerged. Over the years, the services developed at Willowbrook grew.

Hospice Facts • • • • •

The Hospice has more than 400 volunteers It costs more than £7,000 per day to run the Hospice The Hospice has many celebrity supporters including HRH Princess Alexandra, Cherie Blair & comedian John Bishop The Hospice has provided care for more than 5,500 local people The Hospice Lottery has given out over £2.5 million in prizes since 1995

almost 6000 patients and their families since opening, and with 1 in 3 people now affected by cancer, this figure unfortunately continues to rise. It costs £2.8 million pounds each year to provide care services and as the years go by, this cost keeps on growing. A lot of this cost is met by fundraising and the dedicated fundraising team organises events and campaigns, not only raising awareness of the Hospice but much needed funds as well.

In 2007, Willowbrook Hospice was given a helping hand to develop their services further. The Department of Health awarded the Hospice £604,000 towards refurbishments and the building of a dedicated OutPatient Suite; something that was urgently needed due to rising demands. Two years later the Hospice introduced the Cedarwood Centre, and in 2010 another grant of £663,000 was awarded to build a dedicated Day Therapy Centre. The newly opened Cedarwood Centre was extended to accommodate the new unit, which opened in June 2011.

The Hospice would like to take this chance to thank every single person who keeps the fundraising wheels turning - without you they wouldn’t be able to achieve, they wouldn’t be able to grow and most importantly they wouldn’t be able to care. Your support means so much to all of the patients and their families. If you would like to join the many ranks of volunteers or would like to make a donation to the Hospice please contact the Fundraising Team on 01744 453 798 or email diane@willowbrookhospice.org.uk

There are now 10 in-patient beds, 10 Day Therapy places per day and countless Out Patient appointments each week. The multidisciplinary team helps patients to live their lives to the full, helping them to cope with pain, improve their mobility through exercises and relax using a range of complementary and craft therapies. You & The Law Road Traffic Accidents

Most people are aware that if they are injured in a road traffic accident (RTA), either as a driver, passenger, pedestrian or cyclist, then they may be able to make a claim for compensation. According to the Department for Transport Website there were 206,850 people injured, including slight injuries, serious injuries and fatalities in reported RTA’s in the year ending June 2011. Despite much being made about a ‘compensation culture’ in England and Wales, these figures actually represent a fall of 5% compared to the previous 12 month period. It must always be remembered that if you do suffer injury as a result of someone else’s negligence then you are entitled to make a claim for compensation. If you are uncertain as to whether or not you may be able to make a claim then ring us and we can discuss the claim with you. You are also able to make a claim for any financial inconvenience you suffer for example, loss of earnings, medical expenses, car hire costs, vehicle repairs, travel expenses etc. Injuries can be

psychological injuries, e.g.travel anxiety, as well as physical injuries. If you are involved in an RTA then you should notify your insurance company, even if you believe that the accident is not your fault. Your insurers will obviously take all the accident details from you and are likely to offer to put you in touch with their solicitors to assist with any personal injury claim. What most people don’t appreciate is that the insurance company will receive a referral fee from the solicitors for passing on your details to them. Likewise the solicitors you are put in touch with may be at the other end of the country. You are entitled to choose any solicitor you wish to assist you in making a claim, all solicitors work on a no win, no fee basis so even if you have legal protection on your policy any firm can assist you with your claim. Choose a local firm where you can meet the solicitor who is dealing with the claim and be sure that they are giving you the best level of personal service. At Mackrell & Thomas all our clients can be assured that their claim will be dealt with competently and as swiftly as possible. We work on a “no win, no fee” basis and all of our clients keep 100% of their compensation. If you have been involved in an accident which was not your fault please give us a ring on 0151 480 3666, or call in for a free consultation to discuss the possibility of making a claim.

Leahy maintains the book, which charts the 10 steps to successful management and business, is for everyone working within an organisation, not just those at management level. “We didn’t want any management jargon in it, just a clear description of how people can work together in any organisation for mutual benefit. It questions how to get away from the notion of working on your own, to really utilising the skills of others. It sounds so simple, but it’s something that’s still missing from so much of business. Naturally, despite having stepped aside, Sir Terry still examines the evolving factors in the business world – and Tesco’s recent dip in profits doesn’t escape scrutiny. So what’s causing the lull? “I don’t think anything is going wrong,” Leahy says. “As a business, Tesco’s sales continue to grow. We’ve had a recession since 2007, it’s understandable that no business is going to come through that unscathed, and Tesco has had to batten down the hatches through that period. It’s very sensible that when we start to see some kind of recovery in the economy, the business holds back its profit growth for a while, to invest ahead of that recovery. An important spur for Sir Terry’s success in the big chair at Tesco was his ability to step down from the corporate ladder and properly integrate himself with shop floor workers

Talking Shop Former Tesco CEO Sir Terry Leahy talks to Local Life about his unique take on the career ladder. He’s the man who, over the period of almost three decades, elevated Tesco from being the 3rd most profitable retailer in the UK to 3rd most profitable in the world. With that in mind, it’s fair to say Sir Terry Leahy knows a thing or two about business. The former CEO of Tesco has just penned his first book, Management in 10 Words. From the outset, the softly spoken Liverpudlian is at pains to state the publication is nothing like an autobiography, even if it does chart his rise from shop floor to executive suite. “At times it was a challenge to write because I’m not overly comfortable talking about myself. But readers would need to know a fair bit about me if they were to take seriously some of the points that I go on to raise. And I think the combination works well – I’m very proud of what’s been created.”

28 Local Life

“Every year I’d spend a week a year working as a member of shop floor staff. Doing something is much better that watching it being done. I got a good sense from working the tills, stacking the shelves, working the night shift and more, because those are the jobs that people do in our business. You gain an appreciation of what systems are working well, and what rules and policies aren’t working so well. “And I guess coming from a poor background was an advantage in the job that I ended up doing. Most of our staff are people who work in the shops. I felt completely at ease with those people. If I’d gone to Eton, I’d feel a bit stiff around the customers, and on the shop floor.” “It really is about respecting the people around you. Why should business be any different to how we treat our families and our loved ones? The next generation has the chance to alter the make-up of business. They’re doing it already through technology, but that’s the tip of the iceberg.” Sir Terry Leahy’s book, ‘Management in 10 Words’, is out on June 7, RRP £20.00. Photo Credit: Estelle Vincent

Foster Carers Supper Local Life was honoured to be invited to the annual Foster Carer’s Celebration Supper recently; the event is arranged by St Helens Council’s Fostering Services to celebrate the hard work and dedication of carers in the area. We caught up with some of the carers to see exactly what they get out of opening their hearts and their homes to children in need of their help.

“We have been fostering for 5 years after we had seen the information in an advert, we decided to enquire and that was the start of it all really. We have looked after 13 children so far from babies to young children. We just wanted to give something back to the community and we love being foster carers.” Mr & Mrs Fitzsimmons – Rainhill

“We have been fostering for 18 months and have looked after 14 children, we love helping the children to grow as people, and to see them excel at school and grow in confidence is amazing. We always dread it when the time comes for them to leave us but the good times definitely outweigh the bad.” Kath & Kevin Lawrenson – Thatto Heath

“Our journey into fostering was down to fate really, we kept seeing information about the services and just decided to enquire. We waited until our own children had reached secondary school. Just so they’d have a better understanding of what was going on. We have fostered 30 children and the best thing for us is watching a lost child blossom into a happy and secure person. We believe that you have to give love in order to receive it!” Jean & Steve Pickavance – Eccleston

Get ready for the Chop! Have you heard of the Chelsea chop? (Oh dear, Hubby thinks it is something to do with John Terry.) No, it is in fact a horticultural technique for getting some of our taller herbaceous plants to grow stockier, thereby needing less staking, and to flower later in the season when there is traditionally a lack of colour. It is called the Chelsea chop because it is usually done during the week of the fabulous Chelsea flower show, ie the end of May or early June. You require nerves of steel because this process involves chopping off around a third of the top growth of the plant - flower buds and all! I know it seems a crime but just bear in mind the benefits which come later. Not all plants respond well to the Chelsea chop so for more detailed information visit the excellent Royal Horticultural Society’s website at www.rhs.org.uk and give it a go - if you dare!

34 Local Life

On a different note, Hubby and myself both have birthdays this month - he is like a fine wine - maturing very nicely with age and not at all corked. As for me, well I’m at that stage in life when I actually get on with my daughter - her now being a mum herself - which makes me feel very old. Still I like to think that my enthusiasm for plants and gardening helps me to retain a youthful, optimistic outlook on life … as I reach for my secateurs.
