Welcome From the President It is my distinct honor to congratulate Western Michigan University’s fall class of 2023. Today’s commencement ceremonies symbolize your dedication to pursuing your passion and foretells of the endless possibilities that lie ahead. The prestigious degree that you have earned signifies a major milestone in your journey, marking your transformation from college student to WMU alumni. As you cross this threshold, know that your friends, families and I celebrate this momentous occasion and your achievement, and we share in the immense pride of your accomplishments. Tested by a myriad of unique challenges during your college years, you navigated your journey while facing unprecedented global events. Facing uncertainty, you demonstrated the resilience to surmount any challenge and a spirit of adaptability that will open a vast array of opportunities in the next chapter of your lives. We know our graduates did not get to this moment on their own, so I also want to thank the parents, spouses and partners, children, extended family members, friends, faculty, staff members and community partners who have played a significant role in supporting them through their pathways. Each one of our graduates has experienced the invaluable support of a network that has offered guidance, tough love, laughter and encouragement throughout a journey that is now culminating with a well-deserved degree, expanded knowledge and understanding, and an abundance of valuable experiences. Throughout their time as Broncos, these graduates consistently demonstrated their resilience and determination to achieve success. As our newest alumni enter the next chapter in their lives, I know they will seize opportunities to realize their goals and establish careers that will bring fulfillment to their lives and make a meaningful impact on the world around them. Graduation is a significant moment for the entire family, as it signifies fresh aspirations and the beginning of another stage where new goals will begin to emerge and unfold. Our graduates have been challenged and prepared to look toward the future and think big, and we eagerly anticipate what’s next along their journey. So, today, our focus is not on conclusions but on promising beginnings. The University Seal

In 1957, the year Western Michigan University became a university, art professor John Kemper made a sketch on the back of his faculty identification card that would eventually be adopted as the official seal of WMU. The circular design by Kemper has remained the University’s official mark for more than 60 years. It has four components: •

Five stars that symbolize the main academic units in place when WMU gained university status: the schools of Applied Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Graduate Studies.

A tree, which signifies the University’s continuing growth. Its roots acknowledge the institution’s firm planting through its creation by the Michigan Legislature in 1903.

A stone arch that symbolizes a gateway to knowledge as well as solid growth, while the missing keystone indicates the University’s growth is incomplete, with much more remaining to be accomplished and discovered.

•

A pyramid, which stands for the building of knowledge and features a flame at its apex to signify enlightenment—WMU’s true purpose.

Prior to the current design, four different seals represented the University under its various names. The first two emblems were circular and modeled on components of Michigan’s state seal. The two subsequent seals were rectangular and featured depictions of campus buildings.

Academic Regalia The use of academic dress stems from costumes worn in universities in the 14th and 15th centuries, particularly at Cambridge and Oxford in England. Since colonial times, it has been worn in the United States and was standardized by an Intercollegiate Code in 1895. The major distinguishing characteristics of the gowns are the sleeves, styled in the following fashions: bachelor, long pointed; master, oblong; and doctor and specialist, bell shaped. The doctor’s gown has a velvet collar, facing and three bars on the sleeves. The specialist’s gown differs from a doctor’s in that it has no sleeve bars. Masters, specialists and doctors wear hoods lined with the official colors of the university from which the degree is granted. They vary in size and shape to indicate the several degrees. The doctor’s hood is the largest and most lavishly decorated. The color of the velvet that circles the opening of the hood shows the degree earned: silver for doctor of audiology, light blue for doctor of education, dark blue for doctor of philosophy, peacock blue for doctor of public administration. Caps are mortar boards with the tassel worn over the left front quadrant. The tassel’s color indicates the academic program area.
