What a Day IMPROVE LEADERSHIP EFFECTIVENESS

IMPROVE LEADERSHIP EFFECTIVENESS The pressure on individual leaders to keep their priorities balanced in a stressful daily work life is becoming an increasing challenge. The “What a Day” simulation helps individual leaders fine-tune their priorities to achieve maximum effectiveness. It also generates valuable insight into the strengths and weaknesses of leadership teams. “What a Day” is currently used as part of a talent program, a new managers program and as top management training for several large, global corporations (including two Fortune 500 companies).

The simulation is developed in close cooperation with professor Albert Ahnghern from INSEAD Business School and “What A Day” is regularly used as part of MBA and other leadership programs. The simulation comes with a complete facilitator kit and a facilitator web where progress and results are monitored.

The “What a Day” simulation The central part of “What a Day” is an online simulation where the participants spend " hour managing highly realistic situations where they interact intensely (via video-calls) with fictitious colleagues and customers. ! Participants must manage three competing challenges in the fictitious scenario (coming home from a great holiday). Information about the challenges can be found via e-mails, documents and dialogue with colleagues (via pre-recorded video calls). Participants are forced to make decisions and there is not enough time (sound familiar?). And every decision influences how the game progresses. All decisions, as well as lack of decisions, and every second spent is analyzed and debriefed to the participants in the form of individual feedback on 8 performance indicators in three “leadership dimensions”: !  Time & Attention Management !  Problem and Opportunity Management !  People & Motivation Management ! The results are combined with debriefing containing strong learning points. The learning focuses on how to better balance priorities in an intense everyday work situation, providing food for thought about how we as individual leaders and as a group spend our time and effort. The debriefing also includes several opportunities to reflect on the feedback and to identify potential improvements.

Learning outcome For individuals: Feedback, inspiration and tools for improving personal leadership balance. ! !  For groups: New insights and inspiration for improving overall effectiveness by better balancing different leadership behaviors. ! !  For organization: New insight into the corporate leadership culture and ideas for targeted follow-up initiatives. !

Different deployment scenarios “What a Day” can be used in a number of different deployment scenarios: ! Participants play individually and meet in groups for debriefing: Participants complete the online simulation (takes 35-45 minutes) individually before a physical or virtual debriefing session guided by the teacher/facilitator. Each participant gets a personal workbook – with own results and room for notes and reflections. The facilitator package includes input for learning points, and models and videos to be used at the debriefing session. ! Playing in teams – debriefing in plenary: Teams of 2-3 people can complete the “What a Day” simulation together. This set up requires a computer for each team – and a reasonable Internet connection. In this scenario the online simulation experience should be prolonged to about 45-55 minutes to allow for group discussions along the way. Results will be immediately accessible as an online flow – and the teacher could make use of the facilitator kit and the debriefing point videos as mentioned above. ! 100% online deployment: A virtual facilitator guides participants through the whole process. The debriefing contains learning point movies with Albert Ahnghern and participants are asked to reflect and share reflections during the process (the whole process take’s about 2,5 hours). Additional learning points and discussions could be scheduled as online meeting or classroom sessions around the experience.

The facilitator package “What a Day” comes with a complete facilitator package to secure a successful deployment and feedback session. ! The facilitator package targets teachers, company facilitators or consultants who deploy “What a Day” either as a single activity or as part of a training program. ! The facilitator package consists of: ! !  A facilitator guide: The main document and guide for preparing the program. !  A feedback presentation: A slide presentation to use at the debriefing session. The presentation includes “notes” that specify what points to make on each slide – the feedback presentation can of course be modified for the specific program or purpose. !  Four debriefing videos with Professor Albert Angehrn from INSEAD business school. The videos are optional, but could be used as an integrated part of the feedback session. !  A detailed timeline (200 min) to be modified for the specific timing and session. !  A draft for invitation e-mail and a handout to send together with the invitation. !  A facilitator website: A website where the facilitator can access real time results and generate reports for his/her specific group of participants. The facilitator can also generate and download a special “Facilitator report”. This report contains all results and averages for the group and will help the facilitator where to direct the feedback session.
