Our mission statement... Straight from the Top!

ust got back from San Diego--still missing a few hours of sleep, but totally invigorated. It’s a show that I can go to and just be a fan. Met up with lots of companies, comic book creators, film producers, a bunch of celebs, and lots of friends.

I was able to chill out in hall H a few times--Andrew Garfield is the perfect choice for Spidey. I was really impressed with the new Ghost Rider footage; I’m sure you’ll see soon enough. Went to some really fun parties: one was thrown by my buddy, Daniel Alter, where Jon Favreau showed up to guest DJ--he definitely kept the place dancing all night. The highlight of the event for me was walking the red carpet for Cowboys & Aliens. HUGE congrats to my longtime friend Scott Mitchell Rosenberg for making that happen. I was able to get pictures with everyone from Steven Spielberg, to Olivia Wilde, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Nina Dobrev (who just happened to be there--and I had to meet her). The after-party was also amazing: getting to talk to Favreau and hanging with all the celebs from the film. Go see it, this weekend!!! Next up Chicago Comic Con--gonna have the largest artist alley of the year! Tell you more next week. See ya!

e’re not botanists. We couldn’t tell you the difference between a ficus and a…ficus, but for Pamela Isley we would learn every plant species on this planet. Of course, she would probably hypnotize us to do so with her ability to use lethal plant toxins. But hey, we wouldn’t resist. Originally inspired by the iconic pin-up Bettie Page, Robert Kanigher created Ivy in the ’60s, and since then she has charmed comic readers for decades with strategically placed leaves, red hair, a southern drawl, and her ability to give someone a kiss. Customizable gameplay makes for a revolutionary ‘Revolution’

C

ombining action, stealth, role-playing, open-world exploration, character interactions, and rich storytelling, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is one of the most ambitious titles we’ve encountered in recent memory. Prequel to 2000’s original critical and fan favorite, Square Enix’s and Eidos Montreal’s updated take boasts the series’ signature hallmarks, as well as a number of refinements that put it on par with this generation’s most horsepower-pushing entries. Players assume the role of Adam Jensen, a security specialist working for Sarif Industries, the leading developer of biomechanical augmentations. These Six-Million Dollar-Man-like enhancements are at the very heart of the title’s conspiracy-riddled narrative and its highly customizable gameplay. In the story’s opening moments, Jensen’s badly injured, requiring him to essentially be reconstructed with his own company’s controversy-stirring technology. This literal life-altering turn of events quickly puts him on a dangerous path that’s largely shaped by the player. Five core tenets--combat, stealth, hacking, exploration, and social--form the foundation of the interactive experience, providing players with a number of experimentation-encouraging options and abilities. More tactical types may want to focus on and build their social and stealth skills, allowing them to speak and sneak like a silver-tongued secret agent. Conversely, those looking for a bit more action can pour all their XP into combat skills, building a protagonist who’d rather spray hot lead than chat up NPCs. Of course, most players will dabble in multiple disciplines as dictated by morality-testing gameplay situations and evolving plot twists. Our Jensen, for example, sported a powerful arm augmentation--allowing him to yank baddies through brick walls--as well as a leg enhancement that ensured his steps were silent; together, these very different abilities resulted in us regularly sneaking up right behind enemies just before snapping their spines like peanut brittle. Blend hacking and exploration skills into this mix, and you begin to recognize the potential to play the game multiple times as very different heroes (or anti-heroes). The developers have even claimed the campaign can be completed with minimal casualties. While this emergent, freeform play style will be familiar to long-time fans of the franchise, the upgraded presentation should effectively drop their jaws. Combining Renaissance aesthetics with Blade Runner-like sci-fi flavor, Human Revolution yields one of the most unique settings we’ve seen since visiting BioShock’s Rapture. Complementing its ambitious art style and gameplay depth is an engaging yarn that should keep conspiracy theorist’s absorbed until the final credits roll. We look forward to sneaking past all our enemies--or killing every last one of them--when Human Revolution arrives later this summer. — Matt Cabral

‘Infinite Kung-Fu’ creator Kagan McLeod runs down his top five favorite Kung-Fu flicks!

W

ith Top Shelf’s Infinite Kung-Fu set to hit comic shops this month, Wizard World couldn’t think of a better excuse to sit down with creator Kagan McLeod and talk old-school kung-fu flicks, or more specifically, which ones inspired his madcap indie love letter to the genre (with a healthy dose of horror and hip-hop added in). Here are the five furious films McLeod recommends for those looking to get their Tiger Style on! Take it away, Kagan… THE 36 CHAMBERS SHAOLIN EXECUTIONER: OF SHAOLIN “The highlight of this one for (a.k.a. MASTER KILLER): me is Lo Lieh as real life kung “This is the one that turned fu villain, Pai Mei. I’m a sucker me on to the genre,” says for white-browed old man McLeod. “I was a Bruce Lee villains, and this one is one of fan before seeing it, but the best. He hates Shaolin and didn’t know where to look kills anyone who studied there. next. 36 Chambers opened He has a weakness—a secret up the whole Shaw Brothers vital nerve that he can move catalogue for me and I’ve around at will. It must also be been tracking them down ever mentioned that somehow his since. In this one the martial crotch has a suction power, arts training at Shaolin Temple which that can trap your limbs is the focus; the hero working if you strike him there. Defeated, it’s his son who inherits the need for Shaolin vengeance on their executioner!” MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE: “Another alltime greatest villain-having movie. Here, it’s an old, blind, flying guillotinewielding monk. From the time he sets fire to his own house in the opening scene to the coffin-shop battle at the end, you know he’s for real. Jimmy Wang Yu is the hero, but the motley crew of masters he faces in a kung fu tournament provides many awesome WTF moments (namely the stretchy Indian Yoga fighter!). And if you couldn’t figure it out from the title, the villain’s weapon of choice is a toothed frisbee on a chain which expands over one’s head, to, of course, cut it off.”

LONE WOLF & CUB: “Not kung fu, but this sixpart series definitely falls into the ‘martial’ and ‘arts’ genres. Its lingering, beautifullycomposed shots and poetic plots contrast heavily with the geysers of blood that soak the fight scenes — which kind of mirrors the story; an assassin traveling with a toddler. Highlights include a stroller with a Gatling gun!”

BOXER’S OMEN: “This is more of a horror movie than martial arts, and one of my favorites for its sheer weirdness. I will make a disclaimer; there are scenes on the uncut DVD version that I don’t endorse, which involve—like a lot of vintage Asian horror films—some animal cruelty. That aside, Boxer’s Omen is one of the wildest out there. Stop motion dinosaurs, aliens, bats, vein-monsters, barfing eels and what appears to be a magician chewing a chicken’s rectum, all get screen time in black magic bouts unlike any you’ve seen previously!” — Casey Seijas

Omnipresent voice innovates downloadable dungeon-crawler

T

ired of slogging through talkinghead text and having your ear bent by chatty NPCs in traditional action-RPGs? Bastion, Warner Bros. Interactive and Supergiant Games new downloadable dungeon-crawler, solves this problem with an innovative new twist on storytelling; utilizing a narrator, who waxes poetic on your quest in real-time, the title adds a new level of immersion to the hack-’n-slash genre. Because this omnipresent voice reports on your victories, defeats, and everything in between as they unfold, it almost feels as though a higher power is eyeing your every step. Of course, it helps that the play-by-play is never distracting or intrusive, and that it’s delivered by a super-cool Sam Jacksonsounding narrator. In addition to this unique story-shaping approach, Bastion takes the fast-paced slicing and dicing combat out of the dark dungeons and brings into the broad daylight. The vibrant, pop-offthe-screen presentation breathes new life into a genre too often represented by the boring side of the color palette. The visuals also get a boost from the engaging way in which the world constructs itself, LEGO brick-like, before our very eyes. While it definitely tweaks the crypt-crawling, creep-carving experience in engaging new ways, Bastion doesn’t abandon the genre’s most appealing and additive staples. Players can expect to collect loot, customize weapons, best baddies and, you know, maybe save the universe. — Matt Cabral

ith the staggering number of comic book properties optioned for feature film adaptations, it seems like the transition would be seamless. Look closer and you’ll find that the majority of projects announced never make it to screen; when they do, it’s after years of development. “Cowboys and Aliens,” the megabudget Universal/DreamWorks release hitting July 29, was no exception. Check out the property’s obstacle course from the printed page to 3,000 screens: 1997 Former Malibu Comics president Scott Mitchell Rosenberg pitches the concept of aliens invading the Old West as a feature film to agents at William Morris just as his Platinum Studios comic label is gearing up; Universal and DreamWorks snap up the rights and begin developing a script. 1998 Writer/director Steve Oedekerk (“The Nutty Professor”) leaves the project. 2004 Columbia picks up the lapsed film rights. 2006 Rosenberg finally gets the idea into print as a graphic novel, bolstering its marketability. 2007 Columbia allows Universal/DreamWorks to take over the property. 2008 Robert Downey, Jr., his career resurrected post “Iron Man,” circles the project and passes it on to director Jon Favreau.

2008 Paramount and DreamWorks walk away from their distribution deal; Paramount still has dibs on releasing “Cowboys and Aliens” internationally. 2009 Favreau signs on as director, the project’s first in over 10 years. 2010 Downey, forced to choose between this and a “Sherlock Holmes” sequel, packs up for London; with no new Bond film on the horizon due to MGM’s money woes, Daniel Craig fills his boots. 2010 Harrison Ford agrees to be Craig’s co-star. It would be Ford’s first appearance in a comic book adaptation in his 40-plus-year career, and his first Western since a 1972 episode of “Gunsmoke.” 2011 Bringing things full circle, Rosenberg reissues the graphic novel as a movie tiein through HarperCollins. — Jake Rossen

Take, for example, the all-year-round spookiness thanks to a bevy of monster—and Munster—themed lines set to come out in time for All Hallow’s Eve. In addition to launching a brand new line based on the classic sitcom The Munsters, three different lines of figures based on the Universal Monsters rise from the grave! The first Munsters wave will be out in October and consist of the family’s proud poppa Herman, his lovely wife Lily, and everyone’s favorite elderly vampire Grandpa. Each figure comes with accessories and a diorama: Herman has his lunchbox, Grandpa a part of his lab, and Lily her grandfather clock. On the more serious monster side of things, there are no less than three different ways to get your fill of Universal’s classic terror-inducing stars. This year, the characters from Dracula and Frankenstein get the spotlight. Both movies will have sets at collectible stores and online as well as Toys “R” Us exclusive ones. Frankenstein’s regular set includes Elizabeth, Dr. Henry Frankenstein, Frankenstein’s Monster, and the Bride of Frankenstein, while the Toys “R” Us set includes a black-and-white version of the monster instead of Elizabeth. Dr. Van Helsing, Renfield, Dracula, and Mina Harker make up the collectible store pack of Dracula figures, while the TRU one will have a black-and-white version of Drac and a pitchfork-wielding villager instead! But, that’s not all! Look out for two different sets of 6-inch figures too. The Diamond Select version of the toys feature Dracula and Frankenstein’s Monster which come with a wolf and lab table respectively. Meanwhile, the Toys “R” Us-exclusive figures include the Monster, his Bride and Dracula, each with a smaller accessory from the flicks. — TJ Dietsch

Why one of our favorite comic legends chose comics over guitar

B

ill Sienkiewicz has won the Eisner award and been nominated for Emmys. He’s drawn comics for Marvel and DC, including award-winning stints on The Sandman and Elektra. His work has been in galleries from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, and helped promote everything from “The Dark Knight” movie to “The Beast of Dio” CD. How did he turn a crayon turkey crying “HALP!” into one of the seminal careers in modern comic art? We caught up with him on the Wizard World Comic Con circuit to find out.

Wizard World: What got you into drawing comics? Bill Sienkiewicz: I subscribe to the Arthur Miller school of creativity. That is, that he felt that playwriting chose him, he didn’t choose play writing. And I feel that with comics: comics chose me. I knew I was going to draw comics when I was 7 years old.

I also had some of the teachers got really [engaged] with me. I had one, my fifth grade teacher, who was like my surrogate mom. She was really supportive. It was really one of the situations where you tell them how much they meant to you, and they go, “Wow, you don’t know how much a teacher loves to hear that and doesn’t hear that.” But my 3rd grade teacher, I actually remember I did a cartoon drawing for Thanksgiving of a pilgrim chasing after

Art school is fine, because what I think school ultimately does is it teaches you how to learn. You’re supposed to be technically continuing to learn for the rest of your life. But I realized that just art school alone is not enough. I drew ALL THE TIME. Literally, all the time. I drilled myself like I was training for a marathon. Where did that self-discipline come from? It was an obsession, really. I just wanted to get really good at it. It was like I just hated to admit defeat.

I also liked to play guitar. And I was OK at it, but I wasn’t as good at it [as drawing]. And then I started to discover girls, so it was like, “OK, girls, guitar, or drawing? One of these has to give, because I can’t [do them all].” So I said I’m just gonna practice guitar, but the drawing for me was like...I don’t know. It was an obsession. I can’t explain it, [drawing] was just something I had to do.

Did drawing get you girls? Actually, yeah. It actually did, yeah. Especially when you did like a portrait of them. There was this one gal I went out with in high school who had a thing for Pandas. She thought they were adorable. So I did her a Panda drawing, and it stood me in good stead, you know? More... — Thor M

It’ll take more than SPF50 to protect your flesh on this tropical getaway

S

hot-gunning zombies in their ugly faces is by no means a novel gaming concept. However, Deep Silver’s and Techland’s Dead Island is aiming to inject some new life (or death?) into our favorite corpse-piling pastime with a number of inspired touches. A focus on co-op gameplay, inventive, upgradeable weapons, and, most notable, a postcard-perfect tropical setting, help separate it from the undead-shambling pack. We look forward to working on our tan--while working over the undead hordes--when this one infects consoles in early September.

STRAITJACKET FREAK Not all of Dead Island’s flesh-craving foes are of the aimless shuffling variety; a number of bigger baddies, like this straitjacketed freak, will aggressively make a beeline for your tasty brains.

TROPICAL STORMS If facing swarms of decaying monsters on a bright, sunny day wasn’t bad enough, Dead Island also conjures up some scary-real tropical storms. Better pack an umbrella…and a chainsaw.

PLAY BALL! Ranged weapons are a rare, highly coveted find in Dead Island, so expect most kills to be of the up-close-andpersonal nature. Thankfully, everything from machetes and baseball bats, to katanas and pick axes are available for all your flesh-flaying needs.

HEAD SHOTS A variety of customizable weapons, like a fireman’s axe that’s, well, engulfed in flames, can be unleashed for some creative kills. Of course, a good oldfashioned hand-cannon will suffice, especially if an enemy’s head is within splattering distance.

GREAT LIGHTING EFFECTS In addition to sporting stomachchurning blood and gore effects, Dead Island impressively utilizes lighting and shadowing tech to not only set the spine-tingling mood, but to also dynamically shape gameplay. — Matt Cabral

The movies, TV shows, and DVDs you need to see starting this September

I

f you thought summer was home to most of the year’s big sci-fi offerings, you might be far, far too big a Michael Bay fan: that’s why we put together this guide to the fall season’s most intriguing new genre projects. Fewer explosions? Maybe. More imagination? Definitely.

Movies Apollo 18 (Sep. 2) The Hook: The crew of a ‘70s space mission runs into some nasty things from the dark side of the moon; Timur Bekmambetov (the Russian “NightWatch” franchise) produces. Geek Worthy: 12 years after “Blair Witch,” the “found footage” genre keeps rolling because it works: shaky-cam footage of scary creatures strikes the right kind of nerve. Noteworthy: Dimension’s Bob Weinstein insists his studio didn’t shoot anything; the footage was “found.” Riiiiight. Looper (Sep. 28) The Hook: An assassin (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who is sent victims from the future recognizes his latest target: an older version of himself (Bruce Willis). Geek Worthy: Violent, neo-noir sci-fi is hard to pull off, but director Rian Johnson (“Brick”) knows his way around hardboiled dialogue. Noteworthy: Johnson used filmmaker Shane Carruth—who helmed the complex time travel mystery “Primer”—to help define the logic of the movie. Real Steel (Oct. 7) The Hook: In a future where boxing has been outlawed, gruff Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) tries to make ends meet by managing ill-equipped fighting robots. Geek Worthy: If the plot sounds familiar, it’s because the film is taking cues from “Steel,” an episode of “The Twilight Zone” written by Richard Matheson and based on his own short story. Noteworthy: DreamWorks is reportedly so pleased with the film that they’ve already begun work on a sequel. Immortals (Nov. 11) The Hook: Future Superman Henry Cavill stars as a mortal pitted against vengeful God Hyperion (Mickey Rourke). Geek Worthy: Director Tarsem Singh (“The Cell”) has stated he’s angling for the film to be a living Renaissance painting. Noteworthy: “Immortals” is the latest in a series of title changes: the film was formerly known as “War of the Gods” and “Dawn of War.”

Terra Nova (Fox, Sep. 26) The Hook: Colonists traveling back in time and away from a decaying Earth try to settle in amongst dinosaurs. That’ll go smoothly. Geek Worthy: Producer Steven Spielberg returns to the dino division. Noteworthy: The two-hour pilot cost $16 million—so expensive that Fox was essentially forced into ordering a full 13 episodes rather than risk dismantling expensive sets.

A Gifted Man (CBS, Sep. 26) The Hook: Jerky surgeon Patrick Wilson begins seeing his dead ex-wife, leading him to reexamine his contributions to society. Geek Worthy: Dearly departed “Dexter” alum Julie Benz co-stars as Wilson’s sister. Noteworthy: Wilson, who has a steady career in features, took on a TV role to the tune of $100,000 an episode.

Secret Circle (CW, Sep. 15) The Hook: Based on the young adult novels by L.J. Smith, the series follows a young woman who learns she’s part of a coven of witches. Geek Worthy: “Scream” writer Kevin Williamson is overseeing the show, having had some success with “Dawson’s Creek.” Noteworthy: With the CW having said goodbye to “Smallville,” “Circle” is being pegged as the network’s next big fantasy franchise.

Grimm (NBC, Oct. 21) The Hook: A Portland homicide detective learns he’s a “Grimm,” a guard charged with protecting the world from real-life storybook villains. Geek Worthy: Series producers Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt previously worked in the Whedonverse with “Buffy” and Angel.” Noteworthy: A show with a similar fairy tale premise, ABC’s “Once Upon a Time,” premieres just two nights later.

Sitting down to work on this week’s guide, I had thought that establishing which comics should be in here would be easy work. Science Fiction? That’s pretty easy, right? There’s Star Trek and Star Wars, so there’s half the guide there, plus Serenity and Farscape. Oh, and let’s toss in Fringe too. But then what?

Looking at the Marvel Universe, the Fantastic Four stuck out as a book with science fiction roots, with four heroes blasting off into space and receiving powers courtesy of cosmic rays in #1 ($100,000), plus there’s the Skrulls’ first appearance in #2 ($8,000), the Inhumans in #45 ($225), #46 ($130), and #47 ($110), and we can’t possibly skip the Galactus trilogy (#48, $900; #49,

DC has its sci-fi based characters too, such as OMAC, the one-man army corps (#1, $60; #2-8, $25). Designed by Jack Kirby to be his Captain America of the future, he was part of The Kree in #64 ($50) the second round of Kirby’s and #65 ($55)? Okay, titles with DC during their those certainly fit too, and Bronze Age, with the other everything about Adam being Kamandi, the Last Warlock screams cosmic, so Boy on Earth (#1, $50). The his origin in #66 ($150) has to title Mystery in Space (#1, be in here too. $5,000) in a no-brainer, especially with this having We don’t want to get too been the title where space bogged down in superheroes hero Adam Strange made his though, as that waters down debut (#53, $2,500). We also the theme a bit, but there are have the Omega Men, who so many other Marvel heroes no one really cares about from the Silver Age that we except for the third issue could include for their origins. of their first series (#3, $8), Bruce Banner and his gamma featuring the first appearance rays? Peter Parker and his of everyone’s favorite radioactive spider issue? Matt sociopathic space mercenary, Murdoch’s showing the world Lobo. Of course, he’s wearing that toxic waste can be good a purple jumpsuit here, so for you? You get the picture… he’s not quite ready for prime time for a bit… That’s not to say that there are not superheroes in here Dark Horse has been the beyond them. We have to go-to company for science include Doctor Solar, Man fiction licensed properties, of the Atom (#1, $600; see with them having been the guide for additional issues) home of Aliens and Star and Magnus, Robot Fighter Wars for the last 20 years. (#1, $400; see guide for Had we had more room (and, additional issues) from trust me, we pushed it to the Gold Key, as their origins max—Part 1 in this issue and hinge upon science fiction, Part 2 of the guide in next and neither one would face issue), we could have also traditional supervillains, included more Terminator, especially Magnus. Mike Robocop, and Predator Baron and Steve Rude’s issues, but the large majority classic Nexus (1, $5) also fits of them are forgettable, in here as well. with the one key exception

One character that we had a tough time with was Grendel. While Hunter Rose, the first Grendel, is tied to present-day continuity, the overwhelming majority of material out on Grendel is based in the dystopian future created by Matt Wagner in the second series (Vol. II, #1, $7). Besides featuring spectacular writing by Wagner, there are scores of brilliant artists that have worked on this future, including the Pander Brothers, Arnold and Jacob, who worked on the first arc, and a very raw, young Tim Sale, who was working on cross-property crossovers.
