hew! Finally recovered from Wizard World Philadelphia, although there’s still an incredible halo still around. We’re getting so many exciting reports from the artists, writers, celebs, and exhibitors that had record events. So why did this great number of fans turn out? The event made them feel special by coming out and being part of something unique and exciting going on. In this economy, it’s so easy to point fingers, but you would’ve never felt it when you saw the lines wrapped around the convention center. Check out what we’ve got going on for Wizard World Chicago, and there’s no doubt you’ll want to be there. I know I can’t wait! See ya!

The Brave, The Bold & The Ugly!
I
t’s hard to believe NBC has already cancelled their “neverto-be-released” Wonder Woman series. For shame. Not only could we have seen hottie Adrianne Palicki in the Amazon’s outfit, but we possibly could have seen her dressed in this bad ass armored version from the “Our Worlds At War” comic series. Oh well. At least we have this incredible 10-inch tall statue from DC Direct. It’s a nice consolation prize in any event! And Wondie won’t be alone in our YouTube searches for the canceled NBC series. There will be three Green Lantern related busts keeping us company. These Deluxe GL movie busts based on Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan and Mark Strong as Sinestro, as well as an Orange Lantern Larfleeze based on the GL comics “Blackest Night” are enough to make us forget about what could have been. — TJ Dietsch

Class up your bookshelf with these five remastered and repackaged blasts from the past!
T
hese days, just about any and every classic newspaper comic strip, pulp or comic magazine has been collected in beautiful, hardcover archive editions, and likewise, they all have something in common—a hefty price tag. Sure, it would be nice to line your bookshelf with these library-worthy collections, but let’s face it, most of us have forgotten what “expendable income” is anymore. So if you happen to find yourself with some extra cash the next time you’re at the comic shop and are looking to get your paneled history on, here’re a few archives that are worth bouncing the electric bill.
CREEPY/EERIE ARCHIVES In the 1960’s, Warren Publishing figured out a way to skirt the draconian Comics Code by publishing a pair of gory, terrifying horror comics magazines, Creepy, and later, Eerie. And while tales of terror are the backbone of these collections, utterly jaw-dropping, gorgeously remastered art by the likes of Frank Frazetta, Alex Toth, Al Williamson and a host of other legendary artists make these archives must-adds to your library. If you aren’t a horror comics fan, you definitely will be after picking up a volume of Creepy or Eerie Archives.
WALT DISNEY’S MICKEY MOUSE ARCHIVES While his name is now synonymous with theme parks, family fun and take-no-prisoners lawsuits, back in the 1930’s, Mickey Mouse was poised to be the next great action hero, tangling with the likes of mobsters, kidnappers, spies, and various other nasties. No, really, we’re not making this up, but if you need further proof, look no further than Fantagraphics’ latest archives featuring the world’s most famous rodent’s earliest newspaper strip adventures.
THE COMPLETE PEANUTS Fantagraphics’ Peanuts collections were arguably the spark that lit the fuse of the archiving trend among publishers, and with good reason— these award winning collections are not only beautiful tributes to quite possibly the most influential comic strip of all time, but a testament to brilliant design, thanks to indie icon Seth’s breathtaking trade dress. Granted, there are 15 separate volumes currently available, but there’s no debating Peanuts are right up there with Superman and Spider-Man in terms of American comic icons.
ARCHIE ARCHIVES It’s a safe bet that nearly everyone— from card-carrying geeks to, well, your parents—have at one time or another read an Archie comic. And while Riverdale’s resident redhead and his pals (and gals) are still going strong at the comic shop and the check-out line, never before have the exploits of America’s first teenager been so beautifully collected as he is in Dark Horse’s recent archive collections.
THE COMPLETE CHESTER GOULD’S DICK TRACY DAILIES & SUNDAYS Before Batman became the comic book detective du jour, there was Dick Tracy and his rogues gallery of murders and mobsters. And while it’s—dare we say, criminal, that there’s never been a modern day revamp (Warren Beatty’s take aside), fans looking for hard-nosed crime noir need look no further than IDW’s brilliant collection. — Casey Seijas

Holy Hadouken! Street Fighter ups the ante with an all-new expanded edition!
W
hen Street Fighter entered the modern day of video games with Street Fighter IV in 2008—gamers old and young instantly carved out a new level of fighting competition all over Xbox Live and the Playstation Network. Thankfully, Capcom responded to fans by ushering new upgrades and expansions to the franchise just so a super combo finish could be that much smoother.
That’s where Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition steps in. Players can expect oodles of goodies from Capcom’s latest expansion (as DLC or as an old fashion game on disc) like new characters including Yun and Yang—two of our favorites. The biggest roster addition has to be Evil Ryu—if SF were a tournament of looking bad-ass instead of fighting, this guy would be king. The biggest improvement in SSFIVAE is the ability to watch the replays of fights from other players, which certainly sounds voyeuristic. It really just means you can witness and follow a brutal ass kicking(s) from advanced players and of course your own epic fights. So now the entire world can see you getting beat up by E. Honda. Sure, there are the licensed books coming out of the Big Two, but as far as innovative, groundbreaking comics and graphic novels, the comic shop can leave our little ones a bit left out. Needless to say, we here at Wizard World Digital want kids to get hooked on comics as soon as possible, so if you’re looking for some solid suggestions for your little ones, here are a few hitting shelves this summer that are worth their formative years.

SPACE WARPED (By Hervé Bourhis & Rudy Spiessert) If there’s one thing Family Guy and Robot Chicken have taught us, it’s that you can never go wrong with a good Star Wars parody, and this new all-ages two-part mini-series delivers the funny like a force blast.
OKIE DOKIE DONUTS (By Chris Eliopoulos) Longtime illustrator and cartoonist Chris “Elio” Eliopoulos combines two great tastes that go great together (comics and donuts, naturally) in this, the first volume of his all-ages series, which tells the story of Big Mama and her madcap pastry-making factory, Okie Dokie Donuts.
BERONA’S WAR (By Jesse Labbé & Anthony Coffey) Sure, they may seem cute and cuddly on the outside, but when war breaks out between the Ele-Alta and the Cropones for control of the Island of Berona, what erupts is cartoon violence the likes of which Looney Tunes could only dream of.
PIRATE PENGUIN VS. NINJA CHICKEN (By Ray Friesen) Teach your kids the meaning of the word “frenemies” with Friesen’s series of short stories featuring a pirate penguin and a ninja chicken, who are both the best of friends but also mortal enemies who get in tons of swordfights (when they’re not getting involved in epic adventures, of course).
DRAGON PUNCHER (By James Kochalka) Kochalka has been a longtime staple within the indie comics community for decades now, but lately—thanks in no small part to his two kids—he’s been doing some fantastic kids comics, like Dragon Puncher for instance, which tells the epic tales of a warrior cat in a robot suit. — Casey Seijas

Christie’s Auction House recently held a vintage poster auction in London, and collectors were ready and willing to pay for the best examples of the medium. Some highlights:
Casablanca ($49,200) The 1942 one-sheet to this Bogart classic nearly quadrupled its estimated selling price.
Jaws ($2,665) Steven Spielberg’s first smash took a big bite out of someone’s wallet.
Vertigo ($28,700) Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 classic used famed credits designer Saul Bass for this dizzying effect—and price.
Revenge of the Jedi ($718) The abandoned title for the third (sixth?) chapter in the “Star Wars” saga appeared on very little advertising material. This poster is one of the mostoften counterfeited. MORE

veryone seems to be enjoying the themed waves of DC Universe Classics lately. The 17th wave of the Four Horsemendesigned, toys revolved around Blackest Night and Brightest Day, while the 18th had a definite Super Powers bent to it. For the October-shipping 19th wave, though, they went back to the DC history books to come up with a brand new wave consisting of Golden Age versions of Sandman, the Atom and Hawkman, villain Lord Naga leader of Kobra, and modern versions of Magog, Stargirl and the mecha-inspired Collect and Connect figure S.T.R.I.P.E. Maybe the next one will have something to do with all these new re-launch characters popping up in September! — TJ Dietsch

The only thing holding him back is his grounded, workaholic wife, Jenna, who discovers she may have Multiple Sploderorsis (make sure you read that twice)—a disease that serves up a lifetime of crippling pain and the threat of spontaneously exploding. equel to 2007’s comic book-based cult hit, The Darkness II reunites gamers with mob-tied, demon-possessed protagonist Jackie Estacado. Now the don of the “family,” Jackie’s faced with a series of fresh threats from this world and beyond. Thankfully, his new ability to simultaneously control his arms and a pair of demon limbs—dubbed “quadwielding” by the game’s developers—helps keep the baddies at bay. Read on for a closer look at Jackie’s lethal limbs in action.
Left demon arm: Jackie can call on his left demon arm to grab thugs by the throat or legs, or pick up environmental items to use as makeshift death-dealers; we witnessed the angry appendage pin a chump to a wall with a rusty length of rebar. Quick-kill moves, sqch as one that sees the demon’s head erupting from an enemy’s stomach, Alienlike, can also be executed with little effort.
Left arm: Jackie’s human hands may not be lined with rows of razor-sharp demon teeth, but they’re just as deadly, especially when clutching dual, nickel-plated pistols. Of course, seasoned bullet sprayers may want to mix things up a bit with, say, an Uzi in one hand and a hand-cannon in the other. Still, if you’re serious about painting the environments a pulpy red, you may want to dedicate both hands to wielding a face-erasing shotgun.
right demon arm: After the left possessed appendage scoops up some poor sap stupid enough to approach it, the right demon arm can go to work on shredding it like fleshy confetti; using the gamepad’s right analog stick, players can get creative with horizontal and vertical slashes. One such move, called the “wishbone,” carves enemies from brain to belly with surgical precision.
right arm: In addition to filling foes full of smoking holes, players will want to use Jackie’s more traditional weapons to shoot out light sources. Illuminated areas are dangerous to the Darkness, so shattering bulbs and neon rods is as important as dropping goons. The human limbs are also most effective when complementing the demon arms; tearing a door off a taxi cab with one of the terrifying tentacles, then shooting through its rolled-down window is a good example of this killer cooperation. — Matt Cabral

reak down the highest-grossing films of all time and you’ll see a range of genres, stars, and even budgets. We couldn’t help but wonder how these flicks would translate into comic book form. (And why haven’t they!)
One constant in these blockbuster properties? Detail: some of Hollywood’s biggest success stories pack enough in their running times to fill 10 flicks. That’s why these top box office draws deserve some comic action: their worlds are so dense as to require monthly visits.
Harry Potter ($2 billion total) What to do after the film series ends this summer? Revisit the books, offer up an expanded/extended “alternative” continuity, and convince JK Rowling to let others play in the sandbox for a little bit.
Lord of the Rings ($1.1 billion total) Some might call sacrilege at expanding on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Hobbit history. They’re right: but there’s nothing wrong with adapting the existing volumes into a sprawling comic book epic, able to cram in all the details even Peter Jackson’s 10+ hour opus couldn’t manage.
Pirates of the Caribbean ($1.3 billion total) Would a Pirates-based comic be crippled without the swagger of Johnny Depp? With ghost pirates, sea monsters, ship collisions, mermaids, and every manner of aquatic danger—probably not.
Avatar ($760 million) James Cameron’s eco-epic created a new planet, Pandora— along with a new race of aliens. There has to be enough creatures, battles, and war gear to populate a series. — Jake Rossen

Meet the most (literally) insanely Patriotic characters in comics
S
ure, Captain America might get all of the shine for being the living embodiment of the American Spirit, but when it comes to these Proud Patriots, ol’ Cap comes across as some Rachel Maddow watching, white wine sipping, Northeast elitist. Celebrate our nation’s independence with these characters that love America…to a fault.
NUKE: Some dudes will get Old Glory tattoos to show their pride, and then some dudes—like ol’ Nuke here—will get American flag tattoos that cover their entire face as a not-so-subtle warning to stay far away. It also doesn’t help matters that the former Vietnam Vet and POW is hopped up on a cocktail of amphetamines and barbiturates at any given moment, leaving him lost in nightmarish flashbacks and psychotic delusions either. UNCLE SAM: Ya know how almost every major city has that one crazy homeless dude who claims that a mysterious talisman (or empty beer bottle, imaginary friend or tinfoil helmet) that channels the “Spirit of America” into him and gives him great powers to fight evil threats to the nation? Well, in the DCU, that whackjob’s considered a superhero!
AMERICAN MAID: While on one hand, American Maid was probably the most competent superhero in The Tick lore, but we can only assume she set back the women’s lib movement a least a few months thanks to her primary weapons of choice: stilettos, a tiara, and various household cleaning supplies.
CIVILIAN JUSTICE: In the days and months after 9/11, America needed a new breed of comic character to help make sense of the tragedy. Luckily, this indie comic delivered one option: a gaudy leather jacket wearing, ’roided-up, American flag masked vigilante, who impaled terrorists with a broken flagpole. Yup, nothing like a jingoistic psycho to help heal those wounds! — Casey Seijas

f we’ve learned anything from the “Transformers” franchise, it’s that giant robots destroying cities don’t come cheap. While we may occasionally grumble about rising ticket prices, paying $11 to see hundreds of millions’ worth of movie engineering isn’t such a bad deal. Check out some of the overhead (and cost cutters) on Paramount’s latest Transformers flick, “Dark of the Moon,” hitting June 29. Super Bowl Marketing: -$3,000,000 Thirty seconds of screen time during the February game set the studio back $3 million—three times the entire budget of “The Battle of Shaker Heights,” Shia LaBeouf’s first starring role.
3-D Effects: -$30,000,000 With tepid revenue for the latest “Pirates of the Caribbean” in 3-D, concern over the quality (and quantity) of the genre is soaring: Paramount elected to dump an additional $30 mil into the till in order to create an impressive, immersive experience. Did it work? 3-D maestro James Cameron screened “TF3” and called it “impressive stuff.” Megan Fox: + $800,000 Fox reportedly took home less than eight figures for her role in the first two films. Maybe that’s why she parted ways with the franchise. Her replacement? Model Rosie Huntington-Whitely.

Michael Bay’s Salary: -$80,000,000 For managing to craft an outsized hit from a toy line, director Bay’s salary and profit sharing from the first “Transformers” netted him $80 mil. Think he’s taking a pay cut?
Marina City Location Shoot: +$40,000 Despite his rep for loving explosions, Bay opted out of a stunt car shoot in Marina City when the township wanted a forty grand “location fee.” Medical Care: -$350,000 Paramount was compelled to foot the bill for medical expenses incurred when extra Gabriela Cedillo was injured during a car stunt. (Officials in Indiana, site of the shoot, cleared producers of any negligence; Cedillo’s family is still pursuing litigation.) The Bay Bet: + or - $25,000 After receiving criticism for the jokey portrayal of Skids and Mudflap in the first sequel, Bay was adamant they wouldn’t appear in the third. But when a trailer featured the two briefly—a mistake, Bay says—he alleviated fan concerns by offering a cool $25,000 to anyone who could spot them in the finished film. — Jake Rossen

# Gene Colan’s Legacy

egendary artist Gene Colan passed away last week at the age of 84; he will be missed by the millions touched by his art. We first marveled at Colan’s fascinatingly unique style and vision in The Tomb of Dracula. His subtle, emotional art—a masterful mix of sketchy pencils and dark inks—always set the mood as if we were walking into a dream, which was absolutely perfect for a story filled with vampires and werewolves lurking in the shadows. With a career spanning seven decades, Colan brought hundreds of other characters to life, from his ’40s horror covers to more than 80 issues on Daredevil in the ’60s and ’70s to his final Eisner Award-winning work on 2009’s Captain America #601. “He was a mighty craftsman, with such a strong style of his own that he avoided entirely working under any of the popular house styles, even the mighty Jack Kirby one that roared through Marvel in the 1960s,” comics historian Tom Spurgeon told the press recently, regarding Colan’s individual impact on the comic art landscape. “He was his own chapter in the history of comics.” No one will ever be the same as Gene Colan, nor would we want them to be. More than
Meets the Eye secondary to the simply amazing work done by writer Larry Hama in the comics. Larry Hama did not write issues #8, 9, 20, 119, 141, 153, and 154. Why am I listing ones that Hama did not do? Because it’s far easier than listing the ones he did do, which just happens to be every other issue in this 155-issue run. Along with the comics, Hama did the majority of the file cards that appeared on the backs of the action figures and was an instrumental voice in the creation and development of the line.

etween the release this week of the latest installment in the Transformers movie series, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and the news earlier this month that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would be in next year’s G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes, what better time is there than now to
do a special guide just for Hasbro’s heroes? The biggest problem that G.I. Joe and Transformers both faced is that between the comics and the cartoons, neither was able to have a consistent, high level of quality in both. For G.I. Joe, the cartoon was always
While the overwhelming majority of licensed products at this time were underwhelming in their quality, G.I. Joe was one of the better-written books on the market during its peak. When Marvel Comics began its “biweekly during the summer” program in the late-80s, they chose their three top-selling titles, Uncanny X-Men, the Amazing Spider-Man, and G.I. Joe. While there are many highlights from this series, none sticks out more than G.I. Joe #31 ($125), “Silent Interlude.” Besides being the first appearance of everyone’s favorite Cobra member, Storm Shadow, this issue’s total absence of dialogue sets the standard for all future silent comics to come, with none living up to the impact of this one. Issues
#26 ($22) and #27 ($15) features the origin of Storm Shadow’s most frequent foe in the Joes, Snake Eyes, while more is revealed in issue #93 ($25) and #94 (20). While the name G.I. Joe works in the United States, that title would not have the same impact elsewhere, which is why in the Marvel UK version of the title it was rebranded as Action Force. This weekly series, lasting fifty issues, was a mix of reprints of the American stories (including #21) as well as all-new stories created exclusively for Marvel UK, and all issues feature new covers from British talent. Amongst those talents was current superstar Bryan Hitch, who broke into comics at 17 using a sample story written and drawn for Action Force. My personal favorite from this series happens to be issues 44-46 ($15 each), featuring the three-part story, “Destro: Down and Out,” with script and pencils from Mike Collins and inks, as well as cover art, from Hitch. The reprinting of “Silent Interlude” also begins here. Unlike G.I. Joe, the standout product, by far, for the Transformers was the animated show, and its companion movie, while the comic largely featured substandard writing from two creators known far more

for their editing than for their writing ability, Jim Salicrup (#1-4) and Bob Budiansky (#5-15, 17-32, 33-42, and 4455). Outside of the crossover appearance by SpiderMan, in his black costume, in Transformers #3 ($12), there are no standout issues through the first 55 issues.
That’s not the case for the British version of Transformers, though. With Fantastic Four, one could argue whether Stan Lee or John Byrne wrote the best stories, with Daredevil, one could make the argument for Frank Miller or Brian Michael Bendis, and
similar arguments can be made for just about every Marvel title, but one – the Transformers – which has one voice that stands out easily above all others, and that is Simon Furman. Furman first began working on the Transformers with #13 ($70) of the British series, and a significant majority of the 160 original-to-the-UK stories for the Transformers were written by him. His most famous addition to the Transformers was Death’s Head, whose first appearance was slated to be #117 ($50). However, due to contractual arrangements with Hasbro that called for all characters first appearing in the Transformers to belong to them, Marvel decided that Death’s Head needed to make an appearance elsewhere – anywhere – first, so a one-page strip named “High Noon Tex” was thrown together with Death’s Head appearing in it, and this strip ran in a few Marvel UK titles so that copyright
would stay with Marvel. Still, continuity-wise, the first appearance that matters is the Transformers #117. Oh, and remember how I said there was nothing worthwhile in those first 55 issues of the American version? #56 ($12) features Furman’s American debut on the robots in disguise.
