American atheist blogger

A

and wife attacked in Bangladesh

prominent American blogger of Bangladeshi origin has been hacked to death with machetes by unidentified assailants in Dhaka. The body of Avijit Roy, founder of the Mukto-Mona (Free-mind) blog site – which champions liberal secular writing in the Muslimmajority nation – was found covered in blood after an attack that also left his wife critically wounded. The couple was coming on a bicycle rickshaw, returning from a book fair, when two assailants stopped and dragged them on to the pavement before striking them with machetes.

{

“He died as he was brought to the hospital. His wife was also seriously wounded. She has lost a finger,” local police chief Sirajul Islam said. “Roy suffered fatal wounds in the head and died from bleeding ... after being brought to the hospital,” Dr Sohel Ahmed told reporters. Imran Sarker, head of the Bangladesh bloggers association, said the protests will continue until those responsible were apprehended. “Avijit’s killing

once again proved that there is a culture of impunity in the country,” Sarker told Agence France-Presse. “The government must arrest the killers face non-stop protests.” “The attack on Roy and his wife, Rafida Ahmed, is outrageous. We strongly protest this attack and are deeply concerned about the safety of writers,” said Sarker. Sarker said: “Communal and militant groups have threatened the very spirit of our nation. Yet instead of crushing them, the government was keen on appeasing them by arresting secular bloggers.”

Roy’s father said the writer, a US citizen, had received a number of “threatening” emails and messages on social media from hardliners who are unhappy with his writing. “He was a secular humanist and has written about 10 books.” “Dr Roy was a true ally, a courageous and eloquent defender of reason, science and free expression, in a country where those values have been under heavy attack,” The Center for Inquiry, a US-based charity promoting free thought said in a statement. Atheist blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider was hacked to death in 2013 by members of a little-known Islamist militant group, triggering nationwide protests. “The pattern of the killing appeared to be the same as that of previous attack on a celebrated writer,” said Shiblee Noman, assistant

commissioner of Dhaka police. “It seems it was carried out by a reactionary fundamentalist group.” Bangladeshi authorities have arrested a radical Islamist four days after a secular American blogger of Bangladeshi origin was hacked to death. A spokesman for the police’s elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said Farabi Shafiur Rahman had been arrested over the brutal murder of Avijit Roy. “He is the main suspect,” RAB spokesman Maj Maksudul Alam said.

www.wishesh.com

“On different occasions, he exchanged Roy’s location, his identity and his family’s photographs with various people,” RAB spokesman, Mufti Mahmud told. “He wrote on Facebook that ‘Avijit Roy lives in America. So it’s not possible to kill him at this moment. But when he’ll return to the country, he’ll be murdered,’” Mahmud said. “Whether Farabi was involved or those who killed Roy were associated with Farabi is a matter of investigation,” Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of the detective branch of police, told.

“This was not just an attack against a person, but a cowardly assault on the universal principles enshrined in Bangladesh’s constitution,” state department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told.

Murder of Russian politician Boris Nemtsov Former deputy PM and critic of Vladimir Putin who was due to lead major rally on Sunday is killed near the Kremlin. World leaders led by David Cameron and Barack Obama have condemned the killing of prominent Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov. Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister and a sharp critic of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, was shot four times in the back by a killer in a passing car. Cameron said the callous murder must be “fully, rapidly and transparently investigated, and those responsible brought to justice”. “His life was dedicated to speaking up tirelessly for the Russian people, to demanding their right to democracy and liberty under the rule of law, and to an end to corruption,” the prime minister said. “He did so without fear, and never gave in to intimidation.”

The US president called for a “prompt, impartial and transparent” investigation, describing Nemtsov was a “tireless advocate” for citizens’ rights and fighting corruption. Spokesman for German chancellor, Angela Merkel, said she was dismayed by Nemtsov’s killing and praised his courage in criticising government policies. French president, François Hollande, described the killing as an “assassination” and described the politician as a “courageous and tireless defender of democracy and a dogged fighter against corruption”. The killing took place in the very centre of Moscow on a bridge near St Basil’s Cathedral and the Kremlin, two days before Nemtsov was due to lead a major opposition rally in Moscow. Russian president Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said that the president would take the investigation into Nemtsov’s death under “personal control” and that he believed the killing to be a provocation. “Putin noted that this cruel killing has all the signs of a hit and is a pure provocation,” said Peskov. Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev echoed that the killing was a provocation: “It’s an attempt to push the situation into complications, maybe even to destabilising the situation in the March /2015

country.” Nemtsov, 55, was the deputy prime minister during the 1990s in the government of Boris Yeltsin. He had written a number of reports in recent years linking Putin and his inner circle to corruption and was one of the most well-known politicians among Russia’s small and beleaguered opposition. Footage from the scene showed police experts examining the corpse of a man, dressed in jeans and lying on the tarmac, with the domes of St Basil’s in the background. “He was shot four times in the back, as a result of which he died,” Elena Alekseyeva told Russian television. Some rumours were doing the round that Nemtsov had been walking with a female companion, who was unharmed, at the time of the killing. The woman was reportedly a Ukrainian national. She was described as a model who was 30 years his junior. Mikhail Kasyanov, a former Russian prime minister said, “In the 21st century, a leader of the opposition is being demonstratively shot just outside the walls of the Kremlin. “The country is rolling into the abyss.” www.wishesh.com

Land acquisition bill Benefits Farmers or Corporates

The much waited and criticized Land acquisition bill has put the Modi government in a crisis. This is because the bill was made into effect through an ordinance, but lack of majority in the Rajya sabha raises doubts of getting the bill passed in the house. The only solution to getting it passed is by convening a joint session. This will call for criticism from all quarters. Below is the gist of the said Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, which can give a fair understanding of the bill. The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 shall come into force on January 1, 2014 as notified by the Central Government. The Act will replace the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, a nearly 120-year-old law enacted during British rule and lays emphasis on Rehabilitation & Resettlement in cases of land acquisition. The salient features of this Act are as follows:-

1. Giving priority to the interests of farmers, landless labourers, dalits and farmers, the Act concerns only such cases where the land will be acquired by Central or State Authorities for any public purpose. 2. Before the acquisition of any land, the Government is required to consult the concerned Panchayat or Municipal Corporation and carry out a Social Impact Assessment in consultation with them. 3. The Act provides a transparent process for land acquisition for industrialization, development of essential infrastructural facilities and urbanization by giving adequate financial compensation to the affected people. 4. Laying down special provisions for food security, the Act under Section 10 provides that multi-crop irrigated land will not be acquired except as a demonstrably last resort measure and wherever the same is done; an equivalent area of cultivatable wasteland shall be developed for agricultural purposes. States are also required to set a limit on the area of agricultural land that can be acquired in any given district. 5. It also provides for leasing of land to developers, instead of sale, so that the ownership will remain with the original land holders and they can also have a March /2015

16

regular income by way of lease rent; the terms of lease to be laid down by the State Government according to type of land, location, market rates etc. 6. It provides for the establishment of National Monitoring Committee for rehabilitation and resettlement at the Centre as well as State and Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Authority for speedy disposal of cases. 7. The Act prescribes a punishment of six months imprisonment in case of contravention of any provision relating to payment of compensation or rehabilitation and resettlement and of six months or one lakh rupees fine for providing misleading or false information or documents. 8. It also provides for the temporary occupation and use of any waste or arable land for a period of not more than three years for public purposes by the Government. 9. The Act has provisions to provide fair compensation to those whose land is taken away, brings transparency to the process of acquisition of land to set up factories or buildings, infrastructural projects and assures rehabilitation of those affected. www.wishesh.com

FOCUS

A New Version

in Indian Politics

-Kannamsai

The Delhi voters have shown their unanimous stand on political parties. After watching the gimmicks and mockery of conventional parties, Delhiites certainly gave chance to two-year old party called Aam Aadmi Party, which is led by volunteers and idealistic workers. No one have expected this much (64 seats) gap between BJP and AAP. Pre-election exit polls and surveys told BJP’s edge and post poll reports said AAP’s victory with clear majority, but the results on February 10th wondered many political experts. March /2015

18

Hardly has there been an occasion in Indian politics when a party has registered such a massive victory. It was only in Sikkim, when the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) won all the 32 seats in the Assembly, twice in 1989 and 2009 and 31 seats during the 2004 Assembly elections BJP might not have imagined the debacle, after enjoying the victories from 2014 general elections and state elections thereafter. To catch the masses with clean face and Anticorruption crusader, BJP has fielded Kiran Bedi just before the nominations, and the party prioritized the erstwhile colleagues of Arvind Kejriwal in Anna team. The projection of Kiran Bedi as the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate to counter the popularity of Mr. Kejriwal seems to have backfired. She even failed to win her own election from the Krishna Nagar Assembly seat. Though BJP had chances to get decent vote share, it aimed at on sided results by denigrating Arvind Kejriwal and his party through advertisements in newspapers, which enormously damaged the BJP’s prospects. www.wishesh.com

Muslim voters completely stood with AAP, by ignoring Congress party this time. Muslims, who constitute 11 per cent of Delhi’s voters, favored AAP according to the statistics. Dalit voters also rejected the traditional parties through their massive support to AAP.

During the general elections in 2014, Delhi voters completely supported Modi and his party BJP, and the AAP did not win a single seat in Delhi in the Lok Sabha elections. But Mr. Kejriwal stood his ground. He offered the Delhiites a new hope in politics with the agenda of clean and sensitive governance. The BJP, which had won all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, eight months ago, failed to continue its dominance in Delhi platform and the local leaders were side lined for accommodating the new comers. And its so called Vision Document with a list of 270 promises (vague points) had not impressed the voters at any corner. Shazia Ilmi, Krisha Tirath and many new inductees have not created room for BJP’s victory but catalyzed

the AAP’s prospectives. The saffron party’s allegations on AAP and on its top leaders backfired on BJP’s base. The attempts by the BJP to project AAP as villain in Delhi, were understood by the people in reverse direction. However, the results cannot be termed or weighed as anti-incumbency and Anti-Modism, but this is certainly a shocking lesson to BJP and congress. The Delhi decide is a speed breaker to BJP and a shame on Congress party. The grand old party in India or INC must learn from the junior Arvind Kejriwal, how to stand on promises and how to reach every person in humble way. We must appreciate three candidates Vijender Gupta,Om Prakash Sharma, and Jagdish Pradhan – who stand against the Kejri-wall in Delhi elections.

The Delhi verdict can direct the central government policies and performance in a right and pro-people attitude with futuristic and electoral agendas. www.wishesh.com

FREEDOM FIGHTER

BHAGAT SINGH THE MAN OF COURAGE

September 27, 1907, Jaranwala Tehsil - March 23, 1931, Lahore, Pakistan

Bhagat Singh studied the European revolutionary movement and was greatly attracted towards socialism. He realised that the end of of British rule should be the beginning of socialist reconstruction of Indian society and for this political power must be seized by the workers. Bhagat Singh gave a new direction to the revolutionary movement in India. He differed from his predecessors on two counts.

But unfortunately the independent India has forgotten the unsung hero and was busy to credit and establish one family as to be responsible for the independence of India. Even Mahatma Gandhi has gone into oblivion while crediting everything to the family. March /2015

IMMIGRATION

H-1B visa

spouses rejoices After more than a year lapsing since the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has first proposed to amend immigration law to allow H-4 visa holders, the spouses of those holding H-1B visas, to work under certain conditions, the U.S. federal agency this week has announced the formal publication of the new rules, implying that they would enter into force soon, possibly after a 60-day public comment period. The ruling is likely to delight the visa holders of Indian citizenship, particularly those working in the IT sector, as India is the country which is receiving the largest proportion of H-1B visas from the U.S. every year.

DHS Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, said that as part of the administration’s proposals to “attract and retain highly skilled immigrants,” the new rules had been proposed because, “Businesses continue to need these high-skilled workers, and these rules ensure we do not cede the upper hand to other countries competing for the same talent.” Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker highlighted the transformative role of immigrant entrepreneurs in the U.S. economy. She said, “Many tire of waiting for green cards and leave the country to work for our competition. The fact is we have to do more to retain and attract world-class talent to the U.S. and these regulations put us on a path to do that”, to the media in Washington.

The DHS said in its initial announcement of the proposed changes that it, “recognises that the limitation on the period of stay is not the only event that could cause an H-1B worker to leave his or her employment and cause disruption to the employer’s business, inclusive of the loss of significant time and money invested in the immigration process. This rule will encourage H-1B skilled workers to not abandon their adjustment application because their H-4 spouse is unable to work.” The proposed rules granting employment rights to some H-4 visa holders were also

“intended to mitigate some of the negative economic effects of limiting H-1B households to one income during lengthy waiting periods in the adjustment of status process,” the DHS noted in 2013. The DHS said that, “Allowing certain H-4 spouses with the opportunity to work would result in a negligible increase to the overall domestic labour force. The benefits of this rule to retain highly-skilled persons, who intend to adjust to lawful permanent resident status.”

U.S. Company heads, including Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg was lobbying in Washington for the passage of bipartisan immigration reform legislation that would better permit U.S. companies to recruit highly talented foreign citizens. Despite the U.S. Senate passing a sweeping comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill in 2013 year, the Republican-led House of Representatives has blocked debates on the floor, ostensibly due to the concerns that a ‘path to citizenship’ for the nearly 11.5 million undocumented immigrants could have a potential negative impact on the U.S. economy. www.wishesh.com

Mangalgiri is only 12 KM away from Vijayawada. Mangalgiri is well connected with train and buses and is accessible from Vijayawada, Guntur and Tenali. The main occupation of this village is weaving and paddy cultivation. Around 60% of the population belongs to Padmasali, who are traditionally related to weaving. In the temple, there is no deity of god, only a wide opened mouth of nearly 15cms is seen. Here the deity is offered palakam. The priest will pour the palakam with a conch into the wide opened mouth. While pouring, we can hear the sound, like someone is drinking water. When the sound stops, the priest will stop pouring. This means that god is satisfied with the given palakam. Sometimes lots of palakam has to be poured, then only the sound stops, sometimes very little only is required. March /2015

Mangalgiri is blessed with two well known temples. One is in the valley, of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple believed to be built by the King Krishna Devaraya. The other temple is on the hilltop known as Palaka Narasimha Swamy. Narasimha is believed to be the 4th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This incarnation has a lion head and human body. The deity in the Palaka Narasimha Swamy temple is Swayambhu means self originated. In this temple the main offering is Palakam or Panakom – a juice made with jaggery, dry ginger and lime, which is poured into the mouth of Sri Narasimha Swamy. Even though Palakam is sweet and everyday hundreds of litres of Palakam is offered there are no ants seen anywhere near the sanctum sanctorum. A unique feature of Palaka Narasimha Swamy temple in Mangalgiri is the magical disappearance of the Palakam offered to the shrine. When palakam is poured into the mouth of the deity, half of the palakam is returned. The temple is opened only from morning to afternoon. It is believed that Demigods perform puja to Sri Narasimha Swamy in the night.

Mangalgiri is well known for its traditional Mangalgiri Handloom textiles. Mangalgiri handloom textiles are well known for the durability of the colours used in the yarn.

The mixture of colour gives durability. Usually Mangalgiri handloom textiles are made in cotton or cotton and silk mix or mercerized cotton. The count used in weaving gives the softness and hardness to the fabric. The count in a handloom fabric means the number of threads woven length wise and breadth wise known as warp and wept respectively in a square inch. In Mangalgiri the count 80 – 80 is used for soft woven fabric and 40 – 60 for hard varieties. There are some designs which are exclusively used in Mangalgiri fabrics known as Nizam designs. First the yarn is washed and then dipped in the required colour in a boiler and the worker goes on turning the yarn so that the colour is evenly mixed in the yarn. The most important aspect in this process is the mixing of colours which will give unique and durable colour to the fabric. Then yarn is loaded into the looms. The length of yarn which is loaded as warp is known as Pacham. It will take a week to weave one Pacham of four sarees. The looms used in Mangalgiri are mostly pit looms. Pit looms are looms which are fixed in the ground level and there will be a pit in which looms peddle will be placed and the weaver will sit on the floor and use his hands and legs to weave. The weavers are into this profession traditionally. The art of weaving is passed on by way of vision and practice.

On 20 October 1947, locals and tribesmen backed by Pakistan invaded Kashmir. The Maharaja initially fought back but appealed for assistance to the Governor-General Louis Mountbatten, who agreed on the condition that the ruler accede to India. Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession on 26 October 1947, which was accepted by the Governor General of India the next day. Once the Instrument of Accession was signed, Indian soldiers entered Kashmir with orders to evict the raiders. India took the matter to the United Nations. The UN resolution asked both India and Pakistan to vacate the areas they had occupied and hold a referendum under UN observation. The holding of this plebiscite, which India initially supported, was dismissed by India because the 1952 elected Constituent assembly of Jammu and Kashmir voted in favour of confirming the Kashmir region’s accession to India. The United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) was deployed to supervise the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. UNMOGIP’s functions were to investigate complaints of ceasefire violations and submit findings to each party and to the U.N. secretary-general. Under the terms of the ceasefire, it was decided that both armies would withdraw and a plebiscite would be held in Kashmir to give Kashmiris the right to selfdetermination. The primary argument for the continuing debate over the ownership of Kashmir is that India did not hold the promised plebiscite. In fact, neither side has adhered to the U.N. resolution of 13 August 1948; while India chose not to hold the plebiscite, Pakistan failed to withdraw its troops from Kashmir as was required under the resolution. Jammu and Kashmir has an international border with China in the north and east and the Line of Control separates it from the Pakistan controlled territories of Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Gilgit–Baltistan in the west and northwest respectively. The state has special autonomy under Article 370 of the Constitution of India. Jammu and Kashmir consists of three regions: Jammu, Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. Srinagar is the summer capital and Jammu is the winter capital. The Kashmir valley is famous for its beautiful mountainous landscape and Jammu’s numerous shrines attract thousands of pilgrims every year. Ladakh, also known as “Little Tibet”, is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and Buddhist culture.

of the Himalayas. This densely settled and beautiful valley has an average height of 1,850 metres above the sea-level but the surrounding Pir Panjal range has an average elevation of 5,000 metres. Ladakh is famous for its unique Indo-Tibetan culture. Chanting in Sanskrit and Tibetan language forms an integral part of Ladakh’s Buddhist lifestyle. Annual masked dance festivals, weaving and archery are an important part of traditional life in Ladakh. Dumhal is a famous dance in the Kashmir Valley, performed by men of the Wattal region. The women perform the Rouff, another traditional folk dance. Shikaras, traditional small wooden boats, and houseboats are a common feature in lakes and rivers across the Valley. Kawa, traditional green tea with spices and almond, is consumed all through the day in the chilly winter climate of Kashmir. Jammu’s Dogra culture and tradition is very similar to that of neighbouring Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Known for their semi-nomadic lifestyle, Gujjars are also found in large numbers in the Kashmir Valley. Similar to Gujjars, Gaddis are primarily herdsmen who hail from the Chamba region in Himachal Pradesh. Gaddis are generally associated with emotive music played on the flute.

The Kodavas are the dominant community of Kodagu. Kodava oral traditions are very rich; some of the traditional folk songs have been compiled into the Pattole Palome. The Kodavas revere their ancestors, arms and worship a number of deities, besides the River Kaveri, some of them being [[]], Igguthappa, Bhagwathi, Muthappa, Mahadeva, Bhadrakali, Subramani and Ayyappa. The Kodava Peggade (Kodagu Heggade) (cultivators of Malabari origin), the Amma Kodava, the Meda (craftsmen and drummers) and the Kembatti (labourers), the Airi (smiths and carpenters), the Thatta (jewellers), the Male-Kudiya, the Kembatti Poleya (Holeya), the Maringi, the Kapala (of Siddi origin), the Meda (basket and mat weavers and drummers), the Kanya, the Banna, the Malaya (astrologers of Malayala origin), the Kodagu Golla (cowherds of Mysorean origin), the Kodagu Ganiga (oil-makers), the Kolla, the Kavadi, the Koleya and the Koyava are the prominent communities. Kodava men wear ‘Kupyas’ (knee-length halfsleeved coats) over a full-sleeved white shirt. ‘Chale’ i.e. a maroon and gold sash is tied at the waist and an ornately carved silver dagger known as ‘Peechekathi’ is tucked into it. ‘Odikathi’ is yet another knife that is tucked into the Chale at the back. A chain with a minuscule gun and a dagger hanging onto it give them a martial look. The saris worn by women folk are pleated at the back and the pallu is fixed with a brooch is also wrapped in a very unique way where as Kodagu Arebhashe gowda’s

women folk pleat their sari in front and the pallu is fixed with a brooch is also wrapped in a very unique way. They wear either a full-sleeved or threequarter sleeved blouse and cover their head with a scarf. A traditional gold beaded necklace (Jomalae) and a gem-pendant (Kokkethathi) is widely worn by the women of Kodagu. Kailpoud, is celebrated on 3rd September, which signifies the completion of “nati” or the transplantation of the rice crop. The festival begins 18 days after the sun enters the Simha Raasi (the western sign of Leo). Kail means weapon or armoury and poud means Brighten. The Kaveri Sankramana festival takes place in mid-October. It is associated with the river Kaveri, which flows through the district from its source at Talakaveri. When the sun enters Tula Rasi (Tula sankramana), a fountain from a small tank fills the larger holy tank at Talakaveri. Thousands of people gather to dip in this holy water. Puttari means new rice and is the rice harvest festival. This takes place in late November or early December. On the day of puttari, the whole family assembles in their ain mane (the common family house), which is decorated with flowers and green mango leaves and banana leaves. Specific foods are prepared such as tambuttu, puttari kalngi, kesa gende hudka and pache puttuand “rice kheer”.

Coorg is rich in natural resources which included timber and spices. The languages spoken in Kodagu are Kodava, Are Bhashe, kannada, Kasaragod Malayalam, Yerava, Kuruba, Konkani, Urdu, Tulu and also English due to the inflow of tourists.

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ KIDS Story for

KALIA MARDHANAM – The CELESTIAL DANCE of Young Krishna The celestial dance of Lord Krishna was a much read story which elates one’s mind with devotion. The incarnation of Sri Krishna is for destroying the evil and upholding the good. In his life, he does many things for the good of the human life. Many of them are significant in today’s life. This story is of clearing the water body of the river Kalindhi and making it useful for the mankind. Now-a-days we have plenty of rivers which are contaminated with poisonous substances and are not useful for the mankind. This story gives us the message of how important it is to keep the water body clean and safe for the use of living beings. When the morning sun shone over Brindavan like any other day everyone went about with their usual business. The village primarily consisted of the cow-herd tribes were going out to graze their cows in the nearby fields and vales. Little Krishna ran in the streets of Brindavan and arrived at the lakeside hideout where his friends welcomed him. Then they started playing with a ball. After some time, they became tired and climbed on a tree to rest. There was a tree house on the top of it. Krishna and his friends had specially made it for their adventures.

Suddenly the waters of the lake bubbled and rose above the tallest tree in the woods. The Gopalas moved back and all of them looked in awe and fear as Krishna came out, dancing on top of a huge snake! The snake bent his head in respect as Krishna landed on the shore. The river regained its old richness. March /2015

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Soon Krishna and his friends went to the eastern part of the Brindavan forests. But they were shocked at what they saw there. The place looked ghostly! On the exterior, the place looked bright enough. The lake had plenty of water and there was even a waterfall nearby. The water had a bluish colour. But the grass around the lake was not green anymore. It had turned black. There was a huge tree overlooking the lake, but it was on the verge of dying. It had no leaves and its branches were all blackened. It seemed as if the whole place was damned; cursed by some monstrous evil. There was an eerie of silence all about in the place. Krishna looked thoughtfully at the lake for some moments. Then he turned to his friends. “Well then, now that we’re here, let’s at least play ball!” he said and grabbed the ball. He threw it at Kusela, who was unable to catch it properly and let it slip into the lake. The ball disappeared into the waters with a soft plop. “Let me get it,” said Krishna and before his friends could stop him he jumped inside the strange waters! Krishna went under the bluish waters of Yamuna. On the shore, his friends yelled in terror but the boy raised his head and shouted back: “Don’t worry, I’ll soon be back with the ball!” The water felt too cold and Krishna’s skin tingled uncomfortably. Krishna swam lower and found the plants all burnt and bent as if they were drenched in acid. It saddened him to see the underwater plants dead and black. He looked around to find out the one responsible for it. As his feet touched the bottom, he could see skeletons of small sea animals and fishes lying on the riverbed. An uncanny silence reigned over the whole place. It seemed to be the kingdom of Death. Suddenly a strange sound caught Krishna’s ears. It seemed like a www.wishesh.com

hissing sound of a snake. “Whoever did this is still here,” thought Krishna. A huge snake came sliding out of his sea hole. It was Kalia. It was truly terrible to see his large body slithering in the water. Baring his many hoods, he hissed again and faced the little boy. The snake-King was surprised but also pleased to see Krishna. “Hmmm, what do we have here?” he asked mockingly. “Food!” shouted his family in chorus, who were standing behind him. Kalia hissed in wicked tones. “We do not get to taste humans often! And you look like a pretty morsel.”

Without finishing his words, Kalia lunged at Krishna. The boy, who had been expecting such a move, deftly jumped back and hid behind a rock. But Kalia moved at a lightning speed and caught him. He coiled round Krishna and started to crush his body. Krishna, who was rather enjoying the fight, twisted his body and slipped out. Kalia was stunned. It was impossible. How could this small boy slip out of his grasp so easily? Nobody, no matter how big or small, had ever escaped from his deadly hold. Krishna, meanwhile, jumped over the rock and crouched low. He was in a playful mood and he decided to tease the evil snake. Had he known who his opponent is, Kalia would never have dared to try to devour Krishna. But Kalia did not know this and he was hell- bent on having Krishna as his lunch. As the snake came around the rock to catch him, Krishna ran over to the other side. The next few minutes were spent in hide and seek until, tired, Kalia lost his patience. “You boy, why don’t you face me like a man instead of dancing like a girl?” he snarled at Krishna. 41

“Oh, I haven’t even started dancing yet!” laughed Krishna. “But since you are asking, let me show you how I really dance.”

Saying so, Krishna quickly climbed over the rock and jumped on the snake’s enormous hood. He firmly placed his foot on the snake’s sensitive head and started to dance. The whole lake started to tremble as Krishna danced. The lake anemones and the burnt sea plants started to shake. It seemed as if they nodded their heads together in ecstasy over Kalia’s plight. Even the fishes left alive stood still and watched him dancing over Kalia’s head. “Hey you, stop dancing on my head, will you?” Kalia screamed out in pain. Krishna stopped dancing and slid lower near Kalia’s face. He rained blows on his head and climbed on his head to dance again. Kalia grew truly afraid. Now he felt surely that the little boy was no ordinary child. The thud of Krishna’s feet felt like a great hammer on his head. As Krishna danced with more and more vigour, the snake felt his life slowly being pushed out of his body. Kalia’s wives were quick to predict Kalia’s fate. “Oh, divine child, please don’t kill our husband!” they begged him. “I will let him live if all of you promise to leave this place forever,” answered Krishna. “But we are so safe in here!” wailed Kalia. “If we go out now, Garuda the giant eagle would surely have us as his breakfast!” “Go to Ramnaka, the snake-kingdom,” promised Krishna. “You and your family will not be attacked by any bird or beast till you reach there. That’s my promise to you. Now off you go!!” March /2015

BEA U T Y TI P S

Right now, some of the most talented pros in the beauty game are giving it their all at Fashion Week, prepping hundreds of models for the runway and creating next spring’s hottest trends in the process. But our favorite part of this epic beauty bonanza that happens twice a year is learning all the brilliant new tricks that we’d never have picked up elsewhere. Here, we’ve distilled our top 10 tips that you can use right now in your own beauty routine. Don’t worry, you can thank us later.

01

03

Switch up your eyeliner to make eyes look larger. For Zac Posen, makeup artist Kabuki paired graphic black liner along the top lashes with smudged black pencil along the lower lash line. He also lined the waterline with nude pencil and didn’t connect the black liner at the corners. The overall effect? “The black doesn’t close the eye up,” he explained. “It creates a bigger eye.”

Avoid streaky nail polish. ”The key to layering nail polishes — and nobody wants to hear this — is waiting in between coats,” said Deborah Lippmann backstage at Badgley Mischka, where she mixed two shades, Blue Orchid and La Vie En Rose on models’ nails. “Apply thinner coats. If you start putting too much on the first round it will never dry, it will streak forever.” Your best bet? Wait two minutes in between coats.

04

02 Give rock and roll edge to wavy hair. At Jill Stuart, lead stylist Odile Gilbert coated hair with Kérastase Mousse Bouffante then twisted hair with her fingers. “We twist the hair and then leave the ends straight. If we curl at the end, it’s too cute,” she explained. March /2015

46

Make bobby pins invisible. Didier Malige for René Furterer sanded bobby pins win an emery board before using them to secure models’ side swept hair at Band of Outsiders. “When the pins are matte they won’t pick up the light on the runway,” he explained.

www.wishesh.com

Give brows a naturally lush look. At Tadashi Shoji, Lisa Houghton for MAC Cosmetics enhanced eyebrows by applying an eyeshadow one shade lighter than models’ hair color. Choosing a lighter shade gives a more natural look.

06

Who says your lips have to be perfectly lined? At Christian Siriano, makeup artist Polly Osmond diffused the outline of the lip color — Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Muse

Make a ponytail that lasts all day. Tilt your head back slightly as you pull your hair into a ponytail, advised Rodney Cutler, Cutler Salon owner and lead stylist at Cushnie et Ochs. This will help you create a tighter hold at the nape of the neck — try it!

05

Create soft curls without the frizz. Instead of brushing out freshly curled hair, use a wide-tooth comb to soften the texture. Using a comb instead of a brush will “leave the separation in the curls because we don’t want it to go frizzy,” explained TRESemmé stylist Jeanie Syfu at Jenny Packham. Also key: prep hair with lots and lots of TRESemmé Thermal Creations.

07

08 Use lip pencil as blush. An easy way to make sure your cheek and lip colors coordinate? Make like lead artist Hannah Murray at Helmut Lang, and use a lip crayon as a blush. Murray opted for Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Golshan “I put it on the back of my hand and then with my finger, just rub it” on the cheeks, she said. www.wishesh.com

Intensify your lipstick with powder pigment. Tom Pecheux for MAC Cosmetics topped models’ red lipstick at Altuzarra with MAC Pro Basic Red Pigment to deepen the color and create a matte texture. Bonus: Doing this will also help your lipstick last twice as long.

09 47

Create a perfectly imperfect pink lip. Who says your lips have to be perfectly lined? At Christian Siriano, makeup artist Polly Osmond diffused the outline of the lip color — Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Muse blending with a lip brush for a soft effect.

RELATIONSHIP

AM I IN A HEALTHY RELATION?

IT FEELS LIKE LOVE — BUT IS IT? Sometimes it feels impossible to find someone who’s right for you — and who thinks you’re right for him or her! So when it happens, you’re usually so psyched that you don’t even mind when your little brother finishes all the ice cream or your English teacher chooses the one day when you didn’t do your reading to give you a pop quiz.

you’re not!) The key is that your BF or GF is into you for who you are — for your great sense of humor, your love of reality TV, etc. Does your partner listen when you say you’re not comfortable doing something and then back off right away? Respect in a relationship means that each person values who the other is and understands — and would never challenge — the other person’s boundaries.

It’s totally normal to look at the world through rosecolored glasses in the early stages of a relationship. But for some people, those rose-colored glasses turn into blinders that keep them from seeing that a relationship isn’t as healthy as it should be.

• TRUST. You’re talking with a guy from French class and your boyfriend walks by. Does he completely lose his cool or keep walking because he knows you’d never cheat on him? It’s OK to get a little jealous sometimes — jealousy is a natural emotion. But how a person reacts when feeling jealous is what matters. There’s no way you can have a healthy relationship if you don’t trust each other.

WHAT MAKES A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP? Hopefully, you and your significant other are treating each other well. Not sure if that’s the case? Take a step back from the dizzying sensation of being swept off your feet and think about whether your relationship has these seven qualities: • MUTUAL RESPECT. Does he or she get how cool you are and why? (Watch out if the answer to the first part is yes but only because you’re acting like someone March /2015

48

• HONESTY. This one goes hand-in-hand with trust because it’s tough to trust someone when one of you isn’t being honest. Have you ever caught your girlfriend in a major lie? Like she told you that she had to work on Friday night but it turned out she was at the movies with her friends? The next time she says she has to work, you’ll have a lot more trouble believing her and www.wishesh.com

WHAT’S AN UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP? A relationship is unhealthy when it involves mean, disrespectful, controlling, or abusive behavior. Some people live in homes with parents who fight a lot or abuse each other — emotionally, verbally, or physically. For some people who have grown up around this kind of behavior it can almost seem normal or OK. It’s not! Many of us learn from watching and imitating the people close to us. So someone who has lived around violent or disrespectful behavior may not have learned how to treat others with kindness and respect or how to expect the same treatment. Qualities like kindness and respect are absolute requirements for a healthy relationship. Someone who doesn’t yet have this part down may need to work on it with a trained therapist before he or she is ready for a relationship. Meanwhile, even though you might feel bad or feel for someone who’s been mistreated, you need to take care of yourself — it’s not healthy to stay in a relationship that involves abusive behavior of any kind. the trust will be on shaky ground. • SUPPORT. It’s not just in bad times that your partner should support you. Some people are great when your whole world is falling apart but can’t take being there when things are going right (and vice versa). In a healthy relationship, your significant other is there with a shoulder to cry on when you find out your parents are getting divorced and to celebrate with you when you get the lead in a play. • FAIRNESS/EQUALITY. You need to have giveand-take in your relationship, too. Do you take turns choosing which new movie to see? As a couple, do you hang out with your partner’s friends as often as you hang out with yours? It’s not like you have to keep a running count and make sure things are exactly even, of course. But you’ll know if it isn’t a pretty fair balance. Things get bad really fast when a relationship turns into a power struggle, with one person fighting to get his or her way all the time. • SEPARATE IDENTITIES. In a healthy relationship, everyone needs to make compromises. But that doesn’t mean you should feel like you’re losing out on www.wishesh.com

being yourself. When you started going out, you both had your own lives (families, friends, interests, hobbies, etc.) and that shouldn’t change. Neither of you should have to pretend to like something you don’t, or give up seeing your friends, or drop out of activities you love. And you also should feel free to keep developing new talents or interests, making new friends, and moving forward. • GOOD COMMUNICATION. You’ve probably heard lots of stuff about how men and women don’t seem to speak the same language. We all know how many different meanings the little phrase “no, nothing’s wrong” can have, depending on who’s saying it! But what’s important is to ask if you’re not sure what he or she means, and speak honestly and openly so that the miscommunication is avoided in the first place. Never keep a feeling bottled up because you’re afraid it’s not what your BF or GF wants to hear or because you worry about sounding silly. And if you need some time to think something through before you’re ready to talk about it, the right person will give you some space to do that if you ask for it.

Is it safe to swallow chewing gum? The chewing gum is made up of an ingredient called butyl rubber, it was developed nearly in thirties used for developing bicycle tyre inner tubes. But now used in everything like washing up hand gloves to cling film (a thin transparent plastic film that adheres to surfaces and to itself) and in rugby balls. Now a day’s chewing gum made attractive by adding colourings and flavourings to chew, but it is food friendly form of butyl rubber is non-toxic. Despite your mother warns you, what happens if swallowed? Though your saliva will make it valiant but it’s of useless in terms of breaking down the rubber. It will be forced through the digestive system and might be possible to emerge at another end. That does not mean that you swallow the chewing gum. A large matter of indigestible matters may form in the stomach when food or other particles stick, which can lead to blockage.

Can chilly physically burn you? After having spicy meal you might feel a burning sensation on your hands, mouth might be possible of the formation capsaicin, the ingredients that present in hot chilies, which doesn’t cause any tissue damage. It makes you feel into thinking that your body is on fire. Here we see how it is possible, when we touch chili powder capsaicin particles go into our skin and tissue alerts the receptors that normally responds to temperatures at or above 42c. In the same manner, they transmit the same signals as we feel a burning sensation burn and brain can’t tell the difference. If you have eaten spicy and feeling burning sensation do not go for drinking water because Capsaicin is an oil, i.e it not water soluble but it will spread burning sensation through mouth. To stop this burning feel go for some milk because capsaicin dissolves better in fatty substances. Also going tomato juice or biting into a lemon or lime helps to reduce the pain because of their high acid content neutralises the alkaline capsaicin.

Is the sea salt better than table salt? Many people use the sea salt believing it as so natural and flavorsome than table salt. All salt comes from the sea: the only difference is the salt makers use today’s the sea water, but the table salt is mined from oceans deposits from previous eras. Chefs says that impurities such as algae, magnesium, microscopic amounts of calcium and magnesium, place in than greater level that of flavor upon sea salt but if the purity can be detect in such a small quantity is matter of opinion. It can be said that the texture of salt makes much difference. The table salt is in tiny crystal shaped; only one-sixth of their surface can touch to your tongue at one time and in fractions of second they get dissolve in your digestive system and at the same movement it releases its flavor. By contrast, the large sea crystals salt get dissolved quickly, releases majority amount of taste into mouth. Some even say it is even better for getting more taste in fewer amounts. And the other version is that as the sea salt is healthier chances of using it more liberally. www.wishesh.com

LOVE AND ROMANCE

WHAT’S IN THIS ARTICLE? {i} Why Do We Fall in Love? {ii} The Magical Ingredients of Love Relationships {iii} Lasting Love or Fun Fling? {iv} What Makes a Good Relationship? {v} Why Do Relationships End? {vi} Moving On {i} WHY DO WE FALL IN LOVE ? Loving and being loved adds richness to our lives. When people feel close to others they are happier and even healthier. Love helps us feel important, understood, and secure. But each kind of love has its own distinctive feel. The kind of love we feel for a parent is different from our love for a baby brother or best friend. And the kind of love we feel in romantic relationships is its own unique type of love. Our ability to feel romantic love develops during adolescence. Teens all over the world notice passionate feelings of attraction. Even in cultures where people are not allowed to act on or express these feelings, they’re still there. It’s a natural part of growing up to develop romantic feelings and sexual attractions to others. These new feelings can be exciting — or even confusing at first.

{ii} THE MAGICAL INGREDIENTS OF LOVE RELATIONSHIPS Love is such a powerful human emotion that experts are constantly studying it. They’ve discovered that love has three main qualities:

March /2015

ATTRACTION is the “chemistry” part of love. It’s all about the physical — even sexual — interest that two people have in each other. Attraction is responsible for the desire we feel to kiss and hold the object of our affection. Attraction is also what’s behind the flushed, nervous-but-excited way we feel when that person is near. CLOSENESS is the bond that develops when we share thoughts and feelings that we don’t share with anyone else. When you have this feeling of closeness with your boyfriend or girlfriend, you feel supported, cared for, understood, and accepted for Romance cannot be complete without love. who you are. different kinds of relationships. For example, closeness without attraction is the kind of love we feel for best friends. We share secrets and personal stuff with them, we support them, and they stand by us. But we are not romantically interested in them. Attraction without closeness is more like a crush or infatuation. You’re attracted to someone physically but don’t know the person well enough yet to feel the closeness that comes from sharing personal experiences and feelings. Romantic love is when attraction and closeness are combined. Lots of relationships grow out of an initial attraction (a crush or “love at first sight”) and develop into closeness. It’s also possible for a friendship to move from closeness into attraction as two people realize their relationship is more than “just like” and they have become interested in one another in a romantic way. For people falling in love for the first time, it can be hard to tell the difference between the intense, new feelings of physical attraction and the deeper closeness that goes with being in love.

{iii} LASTING LOVE OR FUN FLING? The third ingredient in a love relationship, commitment, is about wanting and deciding to stay together as a couple in the future — despite any changes and challenges that life brings.

Love is so divine and pure when there is dedication and submission is there. The fragrance of love can be felt only when both of them understands, feels and enjoy it

things. It’s all part of discovering who we are, what we value, and what we want out of life.

Another reason we tend to have shorter relationships in our teens is because the things we want to get out of a romantic relationship change as we get a little older. In our teens — especially for guys — relationships are mainly about physical attraction. But by the time guys reach 20 or so, they rate a person’s inner qualities as most important. Teen girls emphasize closeness as most important — although they don’t mind if a potential love interest is cute too! In our teens, relationships are mostly about having fun. Dating can seem like a great way to have someone to go places with and do things with. Dating can also be a way to fit in. If our friends are all dating someone, we might put pressure on ourselves to find a boyfriend or girlfriend too.

Sometimes couples who fall in love in high school develop committed relationships that last. Many relationships don’t last, though. But it’s not because teens aren’t capable of deep loving.

For some people dating is even a status thing. It can almost seem like another version of cliques: The pressure to go out with the “right” person in the “right” group can make dating a lot less fun than it should be — and not so much about love!

We typically have shorter relationships as teens because adolescence is a time when we instinctively seek lots of different experiences and try out different

become more important to both guys and girls. By the time they reach their twenties, most girls and guys value support, closeness, and communication, as well as passion. This is the time when people start thinking about finding someone they can commit to in the long run — a love that will last.

{iv} WHAT MAKES A GOOD RELATIONSHIP? When people first experience falling in love, it often starts as attraction. Sexual feelings can also be a part of this attraction. People at this stage might daydream about a crush or a new BF or GF. They may doodle the person’s name or think of their special someone while a particular song is playing. It sure feels like love. But it’s not love yet. It hasn’t had time to grow into emotional closeness that’s needed for love. Because feelings of attraction and sexual interest are new, and they’re directed at a person we want a relationship with, it’s not surprising we confuse attraction with love. It’s all so intense, exciting, and hard to sort out. The crazy intensity of the passion and attraction phase fades a bit after a while. Like putting all our energy into winning a race, this kind of passion is exhilarating but far too extreme to keep going forever. If a relationship is destined to last, this is where closeness enters the picture. The early passionate intensity may fade, but a deep affectionate attachment

TRAVELOGUE

Sed ut perspiciatis unde omnis iste natus error sit voluptatem accusantium doloremque laudantium.

Varanasi is often referred as “the city of temples”, “the holy city of India”, “the religious capital of India”, “the city of lights”, and “the city of learning.”

Through the ages, Varanasi was variously known as Avimuktaka, Anandakanana, Mahasmasana, Surandhana, Brahma Vardha, Sudarsana, Ramya, and Kasi.

V

aranasi commonly known as Benares or Kashi is a city situated on the banks of the River Ganges in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometres (199 mi) southeast of state capital Lucknow. Being located in the Indo-Gangetic Plains of North India, the land is very fertile because low level floods in the Ganges continually replenish the soil. Varanasi is located on a higher ground between rivers Ganges and Varuna, the mean elevation is 80.71 m. As a result of absence of tributaries and canals, the main land is continuous and relatively dry. In ancient times, this geographic situation must have been highly favourable for forming settlements. Varanasi has nearly 100 Ghats. Many of the Ghats were built when the city was under Maratha control. Marathas, Shinde’s (Scindia’s), Holkar’s, Bhonsle’s, and Peshwe’s (Peshwa’s) stand out as patrons

VARANASI

of present day Varanasi. Most of the Ghats are bathing Ghats, while others are used as cremation sites. Many Ghats are associated with legends or mythologies while many Ghats are privately owned. The former Kashi Naresh owns Shivala or Kali Ghat. Varanasi is regarded as a holy city by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and probably the oldest in India. Varanasi is often said to be located between two confluences: one of the Ganges and Varuna, and other of the Ganges and Assi, (Assi having always been a rivulet rather than a river.) The distance between these two confluences is around 2.5 miles (4.0 km), and religious Hindus regard a round trip between these two places a Pancha-koshi Yatra (a five mile (8 km) journey) as a holy ritual.

Hindus believe that bathing in the Ganges remits sins and that dying in Kashi ensures release of a person’s soul from the cycle of its transmigrations.

OR BENARES OR KASI – Place of salvation ANNAPURNA TEMPLE Near the Kashi Vishwanath temple, there is a temple of Devi Annapurna, believed as the “Godess of Fooding”.

A Kshetra is a sacred ground, a field of active power, a place where Moksha, final release can be obtained. The Garuda Purana enumerates seven cities as giver of Moksha; they are Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya (Haridwar), Kasi, Kanchi, Avantika (Ujjain) and Dvaravati (Dwarka). It has the holy shrine of Kashi Vishwanath (a manifestation of Lord Shiva), and also one of the twelve revered Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Hindus regard Kashi as one of the Shakti Peethas, and that Vishalakshi Temple stands on the spot where Goddess Sati’s earrings fell. Hindus of the Shakti sect make a pilgrimage to the city because they regard the river Ganges itself as the Goddess Shakti. Adi Shankara wrote his commentaries on Hinduism here, leading to the great Hindu revival. Vaishnavism and Shaivism have always co-existed in Varanasi harmoniously.

SANKATHA TEMPLE Near the Scindia Ghat, there is a temple of “Godess of Remedy” Devi Sankatha. Inside its premises there is a huge statue of a Lion. Also there are nine temples of nine planets nearby to this temple.

In the Rig-Veda, the city was referred to as Kasi or Kashi, “the luminous one” as an allusion to the city’s historical status as a centre of learning, literature, and culture. Kasikhanda described the glory of the city in 15,000 verses in the Skanda Purana. In one verse, Lord Shiva says, the three worlds form one city of mine, and Kasi is my royal palace therein. It is said that Lord Shiva has established Kasi around 5,000 years ago, thus making it one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the country. It is one of the seven sacred cities of the Hindus. Many Hindu scriptures, including the Rig-Veda, Skanda Purana, the Ramayana, and the Mahabharata, mention the city. Varanasi, Kashi or Banaras, is older than traditions. It is a city witch liberates soul from body to ultimate. The much quoted Sanskrit Skloka Proclaim ‘Kasyam maranam mukti’ (death in Kashi is Liberation).

KALBHAIRAV TEMPLE It is the ancient temple of Varanasi near the Head Post Office, Vishweshwar Ganj. Lord Kal Bhairav is believed as “Kotwal of Varanasi” (Security), without his permission no one can stay in Kashi.

Just besides this temple there is a well of much religious importance, whose water is said to be mixture of several underground streams and good for eliminating several diseases.

NEW VISHWANATH TEMPLE Situated in the premises of Banaras Hindu University, a modern place of worship planned by Pandit Malviya and built by the Birla’s. Open to all, irrespective of caste or creed.

The Temple has been visited by all great saints- Adi Shankaracharya, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekananda, Goswami Tulsidas, Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, Gurunanak and several other spiritual personalities. On January 28, 1983 the Temple was taken over by the Govt. of Uttar Pradesh. The Temple in the present shape was built way back in 1780 by Late Maharani Ahalya Bai Holkar of Indore. In the year 1785 a Naubatkhana was built up in front of the Temple by the then Collector Mohd. Ibrahim Khan, at the instance of Governor General Warren Hastings. In 1839, two domes of the Temple were covered by gold donated by Punjab Kesari Maharaja Ranjeet Singh. Varanasi is said to be the point at which the first Jyotirlinga, the fiery pillar of light by which Lord Shiva’s manifestation has supremacy over others gods, broke through the Earth’s crust and flared towards the heavens. More than the Gaths and even the Ganga, the Shivalinga installed in the temple remains the devotional focus of Varanasi. March /2015

DURGA TEMPLE This temple was built in the 18th century. There is nice stonework done in the temple and is the nice example of Nagra Shilp. Godess Durga is believed as the symbol of Strength and Power which govern the entire world. There is a pond adjacent to the temple called “Durgakund”.

TULSI MANAS TEMPLE This modern temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. It is situated at the place where Tulisdas, the great medieval seer, lived and wrote the epic “Shri Ramcharitmanas”, which narrates the life of Lord Rama, the hero of the Ramayana. Verses from Tulidas’s epic are inscribed on the walls. It is just nearby to Durga Temple. 66

HISTORY

AUTHOR OF

VANDE MATARAM BANKIM CHANDRA CHATTERJEE also known as Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay is famous as the author of Vande Mataram, the national song of India. He was born on June 27, 1838 in the village of Kantalpara of the 24 Paraganas District of Bengal.

Image: www.pankajsingh.in

The word ‘Bankim Chandra’ in Bengali means ‘the moon on the second day of the bright fortnight’. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee had his early education in Midnapur. After his early education in Midnapur he joined the Mohsin College at Hoogly and studied there for six years. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, used to read other books in his leisure time. He was very much interested in the study of Sanskrit. His study of Sanskrit stood him in good stead. When he wrote books in Bengali, his knowledge of Sanskrit helped him immensely.

In 1856, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee joined the Presidency College in Calcutta. In 1857, there was a strong revolt against the rule of East India Company but Bankim Chandra Chatterjee continued his studies and passed his B.A. Examination in 1859. The Lieutenant Governor of Calcutta appointed Bankim Chandra Chatterjee as Deputy Collector in the same year. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was in Government service for thirty-two years and retired in 1891.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee began his literary career as a writer of verse. He then turned to fiction. Durgeshnandini, his first Bengali romance, was published in 1865. His famous novels include Kapalkundala (1866), Mrinalini (1869), Vishbriksha (1873), Chandrasekhar (1877), Rajani (1877), Rajsimha (1881) and Devi Chaudhurani (1884). Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s most famous novel was Anand Math (1882). Anand Math contained the song “Bande Mataram”, which was later adopted as National Song. His novels have been translated in almost all the major languages of India. He passed away on April 8, 1894.

Bankim Chandra, following the model of Ishwarchandra Gupta, began his literary career as a writer of verse. His majestic talents showed him other directions, and turned to fiction. His first attempt was a novel in Bengali submitted for a declared prize. He did not win the prize, and the novelette was never published. His first fiction to appear in print was Rajmohan’s Wife. It was written in English and was probably a translation of the novelette submitted for the prize. He couldn’t gain any praise by writing his novel in English, realizing the fact that he couldn’t have a smooth literary career if he wrote in English, he turned his attention towards Bengali literature. Durgeshnondini, his first Bengali romance and the first ever novel in Bengali, was published in 1865.

historical. His next novel was Rajani (1877), which features an autobiographical plot, with a blind girl in the title role. Autobiographical plots had been used in Wilkie Collins’ “A Woman in White”, and a precedent for blind girl in a central role existed in Edward BulwerLytton’s Nydia in “The Last Days of Pompeii”, though the similarities of Rajani with these publications end there.

Kapalkundala (1866) is Chattopadhyay’s first major publication. The heroine of this novel, named after the mendicant woman in Bhavabhuti’s Malatimadhava, is modelled partly after Kalidasa’s Shakuntala and partly after Shakespeare’s Miranda. The hero of this novel was Nabakumar. However, the partial similarities are only inferential analysis by critics, and Chattopadhyay’s heroine may be completely his original. He had chosen Dariapur in Contai Subdivision as the background of this famous novel.

One of the many novels of Bankim Chandra that are entitled to be termed as historical fiction is Rajsimha (1881, rewritten and enlarged 1893). Anandamath (The Abbey of Bliss, 1882) is a political novel which depicts a Sannyasi (Hindu ascetic) army fighting the British soldiers. The book calls for the rise of Hindu nationalism to uproot the foreign British rule and attain self-rule. The novel was also the source of the song Vande Mataram (I worship my Motherland for she truly is my mother) which, set to music by Rabindranath Tagore, was taken up by many Indian nationalists, and is now the National Song of India. The plot of the novel is loosely set on the Sannyasi Rebellion. The novel first appeared in serial form in Bangadarshan, the literary magazine that Bankim founded in 1872.

His next romance, Mrinalini (1869), marks his first attempt to set his story against a larger historical context. This book marks the shift from Chattopadhyay’s early career, in which he was strictly a writer of romances, to a later period in which he aimed to stimulate the intellect of the Bengali speaking people and bring about a cultural renaissance of Bengali literature. He started publishing a monthly literary magazine Bangadarshan in April 1872, the first edition of which was filled almost entirely with his own work. The magazine carried serialised novels, stories, humorous sketches, historical and miscellaneous essays, informative articles, religious discourses, literary criticisms and reviews. Vishabriksha (The Poison Tree, 1873) is the first novel of Bankim Chandra that appeared serially in Bangodarshan. Bangodarshan went out of circulation after 4 years. It was later revived by his brother, Sanjeeb Chandra Chattopadhyay. Bankim Chandra’s next major novel was Chandrasekhar (1877), which contains two largely unrelated parallel plots. Although the scene is once shifted back to eighteenth century, the novel is not www.wishesh.com

In Krishnakanter Will (Krishnakanta’s Will, 1878) Chattopadhyay produced a complex plot. It was a brilliant depiction of contemporary India and its lifestyle and corruption. In that complexity, critics saw resemblance to Western novels. The plot is somewhat akin to that of Poison Tree.

Bankim Chandra’s next novel, Devi Chaudhurani, was published in 1884. His final novel, Sitaram (1886), tells the story of a local Hindu lord, torn between his wife and the woman he desires but unable to attain, makes a series of blunders and takes arrogant, selfdestructive decisions. Finally, he must confront his self and motivate the few loyal soldiers that stand between his estate and the Muslim Nabab’s army about to take over. Bankim Chandra’s humorous sketches are his best known works other than his novels. Kamalakanter Daptar (From the Desk of Kamalakanta, 1875; enlarged as Kamalakanta, 1885) contains half humorous and half serious sketches. Kamalakanta is an opium-addict, similar to De Quincey’s Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, but Bankim Chandra goes much beyond with his deft handling of sarcastic, political messages that Kamalakanta delivers.

About 2,500 people are presently working on the satellite production system at the ISRO’s satellite centre in Bengaluru which played a key role in realising the idea of enhancing the launch of more satellites. The launching of 10 satellites by ISRO will be a huge step of commercial viability of the ISRO’s capability. The low cost will lure many countries to launch their satellites using ISRO’s vehicles. This will help ISRO to become self-sufficient regarding eh financial status for taking new projects and research in the field of space research.

C. Valliappa, Chairman, Sona Group of Institutions said that the college is carrying out research for supplying a component for Chandrayaan 2 mission to the ISRO.

Solving technology challenges in each state, micro-level planning, multi-level review and collaborative engineering efforts of all ISRO centres is the success behind our space programme.” He urged upon each engineering student to contribute for the nation’s growth through their innovative skills and asked them to be technically updated. “ISRO welcomes students from all engineering streams as tremendous opportunities are available,” he added. When a student asked why satellites were launched from foreign countries, he said that “it was to exhibit our calibre and strength to foreign nations.

REVIEW

STORY Badlapur is a revenge drama of Raghu (Varun Dhawan) who loses his wife Misha (Yami Gautam) and his kid. They get killed during a bank robbery done by Layak (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and his partner Hurman (Vinay Pathak). Hurman escapes with all the money, Layak is caught by the police and sentenced to imprisonment for 20 years. After 15 years of search, an NGO worker, Shobha (Divya Dutta) informs Raghu about Layak’s cancer and asks Raghu to forgive Layak, so that he can spend his remaining days of his life out of jail. The rest of the movie is about what Raghu goes to Layak.

Analysis The first half of the movie is slow in pace but it has all the interesting elements needed. The thrill has been maintained all over which keeps the film engaging. On the whole the first half of the movie has been impressive. The second half of the movie has been stunning with race and the film reaches the top after the film reaches the revenge drama. Some of the scenes spoil the movie but on the whole the complete second half makes a strong impact.

Exclusive Interview Akshara Haasan is now one of the leading actresses in India as she scored back hits.

She is currently busy with more than half a dozen movies in all the languages. The interesting thing is her sister Akshara Haasan made an impressive debut as an actress in Shamitabh starring Big B Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush. Critically acclaimed director R Balki helmed the film. After a decent interaction with Akshara, we are here with the excerpts of the interview:

Q) How did Shamitabh come to you?

daughter. I am coming here as Akshara, and no one else but ‘Akshara’. My family treats me as an individual and I am an individual and I feel I can take my legacy forward as just Akshara.

Actually, Balki sir and I were in a same function, he came up to me and said, do you have five minutes to spare, I want to talk to you. I was like Yes sir of course, and he said I have this script and you are completely suitable for the character, so do you want to read the synopsis. I was like wow; I loved the story idea and agreed to it. A few months back before Shamitabh I was thinking to be an actor and this was a great opportunity for me. After a week we had script discussion, and then everything was finalised that who is the star cast and everything, soon as the narration was done, he asked me, what you think, I said count me in I am on board sir.

Q) Do you have the pressure of getting compared with your dad and sister Shruti Haasan? See that’s inevitable. People will compare, but as an individual, I would like to show what I have. I would love to show case and show all of you what I am capable of as an actor. Like you know how Kareena Kapoor,Ranbir Kapoor just made their name, obviously they were compared to their family in the beginning, but if you see now they have made their own names.

Q) Can you reveal more about your role? I can’t really talk about my character. I bring them (Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush) together, I teach them about team work and everything. I have lot of scope to perform and I had received the best compliments after the release of the film which completely made my day happy. I promise that I will do such characters in future.

Your future Projects? I am not in a hurry and currently listening to scripts. Couple of them are in pipeline and will take a decision soon. I want to try different genres and prove myself as an actress.

Q) How was Amitabh Bachchan on sets? He is an incredible person to work with; to work with him on my first film was like an honour to me. I am proud to share screen space with Mr. Bachchan and Dhanush. Sir made me feel so comfortable and easy on the sets and that helped me a lot.

Q) How confident are you about yourself as you are already a star kid?

With that we ended our conversation with Akshara and wished her the best of luck for his film Shamithab

I know I am so and so’s daughter, but I do not want to take that on set, because I am coming on set as Akshara and not as Kamal Hassan and Sarika’s

YOGA PARIVRITTA TRIKONASANA E x t e n d e d Tr i a n g l e Po s e To improve hips, knee, ankle and shoulder as well as abdomen, back side of thigh, calf and scapular muscles.

Parivritta Trikonasana: · Parivritta - Revolved · Tri - Three · Kon - Angle · Asana - Pose

This is the fourth position in the Standing Series. It serves as a counterpose to the previous posture, Trikonasana, by twisting the hips in the opposite direction, opening the opposite shoulder, and lengthening the lateral collateral (outside) ligament of the knee. This posture combines a lengthening of the hamstrings with the first spinal twist in the Ashtanga-Vinyasa series. Practice of this posture will increase the flexibility of the hamstrings, the mobility of the spine, opening of the shoulders, and ability to balance. The following is a discussion of the position on the right side, as pictured. As an asymmetrical posture, it must be repeated on the left side. From Samasthiti*, inhale and step your right foot back ~3’ and pivot the body 180°, bringing the hips square towards the rear of the room. Turn the left foot out slightly to the left – 15° if your hips feel relatively tight or you have trouble balancing, and 45° at most. Bring the right heel in line with the left arch (see alignment section below for more on how to pick your stance). Raise both hands to the sides, parallel with the floor. Bring the right hand to the hip and stretch forward through the left hand, reaching towards the back wall as you lower your torso until it is parallel with the floor. Rotate the hips anteriorly (‘lift’ the buttocks’) as much as possible, lengthening the hamstrings fully and preventing the lumbar spine from curving. Do not begin to twist before you are sure that you have flattened your back – combining twist with a rounded back is a recipe for back pain, especially in positions such as this when the lumbar spine is lifting the weight of the upper body. If you are unable to maintain a neutral spinal curvature here, lift your torso upright until you can flatten the back (as shown in the righthand picture above). Lift your navel towards the spine and tuck the rib cage into the abdominal muscles to support the spine and relax the muscles of the back. March /2015

82

Exhale fully as you take the left hand to the outside of the right foot, placing the palm fully on the ground (above left). Alternatively, place the back of the left hand against the outside of the right leg as high as necessary to maintain proper spinal alignment (above right/variation 1). Lift the right hand towards the ceiling, opening the chest to face the side as the right (top) shoulder rotates up and back and the left shoulder presses forward. If possible, the right wrist should be aligned, floating over the center of gravity.

Gaze towards the top thumb, lengthening and twisting the neck.

Hold here for 5 breaths, then lift to a standing position; pivot 180° and practice on the left side. The atlas is the uppermost vertebrae, and serves as the connection between the spine and the skull

CONTRAINDICATIONS: ·

Low back pain / spinal injury – practice with doctor’s counsel and a qualified instructor. Correct posture is essential in this case to prevent a worsening of your condition.

·

If you have neck pain or a cervical spine injury, do not lift the left hand; keep it on the back or waist as pictured above; do not twist the neck to look upwards.

·

Torn or tender hamstrings: Practice this posture lightly or bend the injured leg at the knee until the hamstring heals. Taking the full position and stretching at your maximum will reinforce the injury – stretch at 30-50% of your capacity, gently lengthening and stimulating the muscle but not lengthening it fully.

·

Shoulder injury: modify hand position as necessary. If the top shoulder is painful, rest that hand on the lower back. If the bottom shoulder is painful, do not place any weight on it. Instead, use it only to help guide the torso.

EVENTS

MAHA SHIVARATHI SUBMISSION OF SELFNESS Shivaratri is great festival of convergence of Shiva and Shakti. Chaturdashi Tithi during Krishna Paksha in the month of Magha is known as Maha Shivaratri according to South Indian calendar.

However according to North Indian calendar Masik Shivaratri in the month of Phalguna is known as Maha Shivaratri. Owing to the special planetary conjunction, spiritual practices done on this day are considered to be especially auspicious and beneficial.

According to the Shiva Purana, Mahashivaratri worship should incorporate six items, offering bilva leaves to the deity after giving it a ceremonial bath, which represents purification of the soul; applying vermilion paste on the linga after bathing it, which represents virtue; offering food, which is conducive to longevity and the gratification of desires; lighting incense, which yields wealth; lighting an oil lamp, which signifies the attainment of knowledge; and offering of betel leaves, which marks satisfaction with worldly pleasures. These six items form an indispensable part of the Mahashivaratri worship, be it a simple ceremony at home or grand temple worship. The story of Mahashivarathri according to one legend goes on like, during the samudra manthan, the snake used to churn the mountain omitted poison which was of very high toxic and is able to destroy the entire world. This terrified the Gods and demons and they ran to Shiva for help. To protect the world from its evil effects, Shiva drank the deathly poison, seeing this his wife Sri Parvathy held his throat to prevent the poison

www.wishesh.com

from going inside his body and Shri Maha Vishnu closed his mouth to prevent the poison from coming out. By this the poison got settled in the throat. This made his throat turn blue and he was given the name Neelakantha, the blue-throated one. Shivaratri is the celebration of this event by which Shiva saved the world. Hindus consider Mahashivarathri as an auspicious day and perform poojas and stay awake in the intervening night of Mahashivarathri. Mostly women fast on this day. Unmarried girls observe Mahashivarathri for getting a good and honest husband. Married women fast for the well-being of their family members. Mahashivaratri is not only a ritual but also a cosmic definition of the universe. It dispels ignorance, emanates the light of knowledge, makes one aware of the universe, ushers in the spring after the cold and dry winter and invokes the supreme power to take cognizance of the beings.

Shloka

Explanation

sri-bhagavan uvaca

Lord Krishna explains to Arjuna, that he is looking at jnana yoga and karma yoga as two independent paths. Lord Krishna states that both can give unadulterated devotion to the ultimate truth. Which yoga is superior or subordinate to the other is not a question as they each can attain the desired goal. They are two different paths to a singular destination suited to the ambiences of different aspirants. Lord Krishna explained very clearly in chapter two regarding the two classes of aspirants in the human race being the sinless of pure mind and the sinful of impure mind. Lord Krishna explains that for purified minds jnana yoga or the yoga of knowledge is appropriate as the self controlled one sits in meditation on Him. But for minds not yet purified karma yoga or the yoga of action is more suitable. Therefore in respect to the two paths they are actually two stages of the same path separated only by purity and impurity of mind.

loke ‘smin dvi-vidha nistha pura prokta mayanagha jnana-yogena sankhyanam karma-yogena yoginam Meaning of Verse The Blessed Lord said: O sinless Arjuna, I have already explained that there are two classes of men who realize the Self.
