THE MAN BEHIND MODERN DAY SINGAPORE Lee Kuan Yew, GCMG, CH, commonly known by his initials LKY, was the first Prime Minister of Singapore, governing for three decades. Lee is recognised as the founding father of modern Singapore and is credited in bringing Singapore from third-world to first-world status in a single generation. Lee graduated from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University, topping his cohort with rare double starred-first-class honours in law; he received the Whitlock Prize. In 1950, he became a barrister of the Middle Temple and practiced law until 1959. Lee Kuan Yew was born in 1923, at 92 Kampong Java Road in Singapore. Lee’s English-educated parents named him “Kuan Yew”, which stands for “light and brightness”, and an alternate meaning “bringing great glory to one’s ancestors”. Lee and his wife, Kwa Geok Choo, were married on 30 September 1950. Lee Kuan Yew had his primary school education at Telok Kurau English School. He then attended Raffles Institution. Lee joined the Scouts for three years, played cricket, tennis, chess and debated for the school. During his junior Cambridge years, he obtained several scholarships and subsequently came in top for the School Certificate examinations in 1940, gaining the John Anderson scholarship to attend Raffles College (now National University of Singapore). Lee’s wife, Kwa Geok Choo, was his classmate and the only girl at Raffles Institution at that time. Lee’s university education was delayed by World War II and the Japanese occupation of Singapore from 1942–1945. After the war, Lee went on to study in England. He briefly attended London School of Economics. A fellow Raffles College student introduced him to the Censor of Fitzwilliam House, W S Thatcher, who admitted him for the 1947 Lent term. He matriculated on 28 January 1947, where he read law at Fitzwilliam College. Lee graduated with a first class in both parts of the Tripos with an exceptional Starred-First (perfect score) for April /2015

Part II Law in 1949; this placed him at the very top of his cohort and was awarded the Fitzwilliam’s Whitlock Prize. On 12 November 1954, Lee, together with a group of fellow English-educated middle-class men whom he described as “beer-swilling bourgeois”, formed the ‘socialist’ People’s Action Party, leading it to eight consecutive victories. Lee won the Tanjong Pagar seat in the 1955 elections. He became the opposition leader against David Saul Marshall’s Labour Frontled coalition government. In the national elections held on 30 May 1959, PAP won 43 of the 51 seats in the legislative assembly. Singapore gained selfgovernment with autonomy in all state matters except defense and foreign affairs, and Lee became the first Prime Minister of Singapore on 3 June 1959, taking over from Chief Minister Lim Yew Hock. Lee led the nation through multiple upheavals in Southeast Asia and oversaw its transformation from a relatively underdeveloped colonial outpost to an

Asian Tiger economy. In the process, he forged a widely admired system of meritocratic, corruption-free and highly efficient government and civil service. Lee Kuan Yew was a visionary leader, incorruptible and non-ideological. He eschewed populist policies in favor of pragmatic long-term social and economic measures and meritocracy and multiracialism as the nation’s foundations. Besides exercising, eating and living simply, his noted work-discipline was best exemplified by his continued daily learning of Mandarin by personal tutors up to age 90. Lee was a captivating orator, articulate in three languages – English, Mandarin Chinese and Malay. His rule was also criticised for curtailing civil liberties (public protests, media control) and bringing libel suits against political opponents. Lee and his government stressed the importance of maintaining religious tolerance and racial harmony. Lee warned against “insensitive evangelisation”. In 1974 the government advised the Bible Society of Singapore to stop publishing religious material in Malay. Singapore too had problems with political corruption. Lee introduced legislation giving the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) greater power to conduct arrests, search, call up witnesses and investigate bank accounts and income-tax returns of suspected persons and their families. Singapore’s growing population became a overburden and Lee started a vigorous Stop at Two family planning campaign. Couples were urged to undergo sterilisation after their second child. Third or fourth children were given lower priorities in education and such families received fewer economic rebates. In 1983, Lee sparked the ‘Great Marriage Debate’ when he encouraged Singapore men to choose highly educated women as wives. He was concerned that a large number of graduate women were unmarried. Nevertheless, a match-making agency, the Social Development Unit (SDU), was set up to promote socialising among www.wishesh.com

men and women graduates. In the Graduate Mothers Scheme, Lee also introduced incentives such as tax rebates, schooling and housing priorities for graduate mothers who had three or four children, in a reversal of the over-successful ‘Stopat-Two’ family planning campaign in the 1960s and 1970s. By the late 1990s, the birth rate had fallen so low that Lee’s successor Goh Chok Tong extended these incentives to all married women and gave even more incentives, such as the ‘baby bonus’ scheme. Lee’s daughter Lee Wei Ling revealed that her father suffered from peripheral neuropathy. Wei Ling, a neurologist, “did a few simple neurological tests and decided the nerves to his legs were not working as they should”. Lee stated “I have no doubt at all that this has not affected my mind, my will nor my resolve” and that “people in wheel chairs can make a contribution. I’ve still got two legs, I will make a contribution.” On 15 February 2013, Lee was admitted to Singapore General Hospital after suffering a prolonged cardiac dysrhythmia which was followed by a brief stoppage of blood flow to the brain. In April 2014, a photo depicting a cadaverous Lee was released online, drawing strong reactions from netizens. On 5 February 2015, Lee was hospitalised with “severe pneumonia” and was put on a ventilator at the intensive care unit of Singapore General Hospital, although his condition was reported as “stable”. A 26 February update stated that he was again being given antibiotics, while being sedated and still under mechanical ventilation. From 17 to 22 March, Lee continued weakening as he suffered an infection while on life support, and he was described as “critically ill”. On 23 March 2015, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced his father’s death at the age of 91. Lee had died at 03:18 Singapore Standard Time (UTC+08:00).

COW SLAUGHTER BAN

Trending subject to target Hinduism A long-pending Maharashtra Bill seeking a ban on cow slaughter is expected to soon receive Presidential assent. The bill was a long pending one for which the President has put his signature now only. The offence will be non-bailable and will attract a punishment of upto five years in prison, against the six months till now. The fine, too, has been hiked to Rs 10,000 from the current Rs 1,000. Congress, NCP and all other so called pseudosecular parties have targeted the government stating that the ban will affect the job prospects of minorities and also claiming that the poor will be deprived with non-vegetarian food. One may wonder what is happening with these irresponsible political parties which are interested only in taking votes by hook or crook. They are trying to make each and everything communal to take advantage of the vote bank politics.

“Congress welcomes the President’s assent. This bill has been pending for long with the President....But care should be taken that this is not used as a political tool to gather support. The implementation of this law needs to be totally transparent,” Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil told.

which may extend upto seven years, along with a fine from Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 70,000. The sale of beef will be completely banned in the state; the offence will be punishable with rigorous imprisonment for not less than three years and upto five years with fine of upto Rs. 50,000.

The Haryana Assembly unanimously passed a bill under which cow slaughter and the sale of beef have been banned in the state. As per the Haryana ‘Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan’ Bill, 2015, which was passed with two amendments, a person found guilty of cow slaughter can get rigorous imprisonment not less than three years, which may extend upto 10 years along with a fine ranging from Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 1 lakh. Any person who exports cows for slaughter either directly or through third party can get rigorous imprisonment not less than three years

The Prime Minister’s Office has sought Law Ministry’s opinion on whether the Centre could circulate the laws on cow slaughter as enacted by some states, including Gujarat, as model bill among other states for their consideration for similar legislations there. Article 48 of the Constitution states that “the State shall endeavour to organise agriculture and animal husbandry on modern and scientific lines and shall, in particular, take steps for preserving and improving the breeds, and prohibiting the slaughter of cows and calves and other milch and draught cattle.”

The NDA government will try its “level best” to bring in a countrywide ban on slaughter of cows by evolving a consensus, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said. “Cow slaughter cannot be accepted in this country. We will make all-out efforts to ban slaughter of cows and will also try hard to have a consensus for this purpose,” he told a gathering of spiritual leaders of Shwetambar Jains, a prominent sect of Jainism. “Nobody can question our commitment to ban slaughter of cows. The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh has enacted a tough law for this purpose so has the Maharashtra government. We didn’t spare time to send a bill passed by Maharashtra government to President for his assent,” Singh said referring to the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act which also extends the ban on slaughter of bulls and bullocks. There are of course some political parties which does have a lunatic mind set regarding whatever is sacred for Hindu society. One such lunatic party is CPM. The so called leftist party which talks about secularism and does anything – including licking the ass – just for the sake of power and vote bank politics, has conducted a beef festival in Kerala under the leadership of its Palakkad MP M B

Rajesh. Unfortunately he has not seen the poor people of his constituency who do not have food for even once a day. Nobody has seen him providing atleast a meal per day for them. Such is the enthusiasm to rally against the ban of slaughtering cows. I cannot understand why these eunuchs want to kill a poor animal which is not able to fight back and eat them. The nature is also against this cruel mentality and the nature disgust is shown through the spread of bird fever, rat fever, etc. It’s time to be vegetarian.

India’s first crude oil purchase for strategic reserve India has made the first oil purchase for its strategic petroleum reserve (SPR), marking the start of a round of purchases by the world’s fourth-biggest oil consumer to build up emergency stockpiles. Oil prices have almost halved in the past year due to excess global production, leaving traders looking for any signs of new demand to help absorb the surplus. The sources said state-refiner Indian Oil Corp bought a 2 million barrel cargo of Iraqi crude from Chinese trader Unipec, which will load in May for shipping to the first stage of India’s SPR on the country’s east coast. This move is seen as an intelligent purchase to buy oil when the price is rock bottom and stock it as reserve. This will help the country to save a lot of foreign reserves. State-refiners IOC and Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd will buy another three Very Large Crude Carriers between them for the Visakhapatanam SPR storage site in Andhra Pradesh. Purchase of the first 8 million barrels for Visakhapatanam is relatively small when compared with the global market, which is totaling to less than 10 percent of daily demand.

commercial and strategic storage space almost full. China’s strategic stocks were estimated at more than 30 days worth of crude imports. It plans to eventually build reserves of around 600 million barrels or about 90 days of import cover. India’s SPR will be able to cover approximately 13 days of imports when it is completed by the end of this year. The east coast Visakhapatanam facility has two compartments of 7.55 million barrels and 2.20 million barrels, with the smaller one to be used by HPCL for its 166,000 bpd refinery at the site. The VLCC cargo Basrah IOC bought from Unipec, the trading arm of China’s state-backed oil producer Sinopec, was purchased at a premium of 50-60 cents to the official selling price of the Iraqi grade, the sources said. Apart from the SPR purchases, IOC has re-floated a tender seeking a million barrels of heavy grades, traders said. Brent crude oil prices were down by around $1 a barrel to near $55 a barrel, which is having been fallen from above $110 a barrel.

India’s purchases could ramp up later this year as the country completes construction of the next phase. Two SPR sites, at Padur and Mangalore on India’s west coast, will have a capacity of 29.3 million barrels and are expected to be ready by October. India is heavily reliant on fuel imports, producing less than a third of the nearly 3.7 million barrels per day it consumed in 2013, data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows. Its fast-growing economy has become the world’s fourth-largest oil consumer after the United States, China and Japan. China’s own SPR purchases have helped to support oil prices during the global supply glut and are expected to slow this year with

The government’s strategy to stock pile the oil reserves is definitely a foresighted one. This will help the country to face the possible change of oil prices in the near future. When the government is able to stay put with the fluctuations of global oil prices, it will also be able to control the prices of the commodities. April /2015

On 29 March 2015, Saina won her maiden women’s singles title at the India Open BWF Super Series beating Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand. This assures her of becoming World number 1 when the latest BWF rankings are released on April 2nd. After dominating, the first game and starting the second game well, Saina succumbed to nerves and lost 21-16, 14-21, 7-21. “Shouting out

instructions to a player is usually not something I do,” her coach Vimal Kumar said after the match. “I was telling her to be more composed. But I think her brain had just switched off. She wasn’t reacting to anything at all.” “I have taken some many hard decisions to get here. I kept losing to the top players all the time, in fact after last year’s World Championship I even thought of quitting badminton. It was a very dark time in my career. People were saying ‘Saina your career is finished’,” Saina said after beating former world champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 21-16 21-14 in the final of the Yonex Indian Super Series tournament played at the Siri Fort Sports Complex in Delhi.

“I think a big burden off my head. Last four years, I was struggling, losing in prequarters or quarters, this is the first time I have reached the finals and won it. So, too many surprises for me in this tournament, being the world no 1, winning the title. I am very proud of myself. IMMIGRATION

H-1B visa

spouses rejoices After more than a year lapsing since the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has first proposed to amend immigration law to allow H-4 visa holders, the spouses of those holding H-1B visas, to work under certain conditions, the U.S. federal agency this week has announced the formal publication of the new rules, implying that they would enter into force soon, possibly after a 60-day public comment period. The ruling is likely to delight the visa holders of Indian citizenship, particularly those working in the IT sector, as India is the country which is receiving the largest proportion of H-1B visas from the U.S. every year.

DHS Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, said that as part of the administration’s proposals to “attract and retain highly skilled immigrants,” the new rules had been proposed because, “Businesses continue to need these high-skilled workers, and these rules ensure we do not cede the upper hand to other countries competing for the same talent.” Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker highlighted the transformative role of immigrant entrepreneurs in the U.S. economy. She said, “Many tire of waiting for green cards and leave the country to work for our competition. The fact is we have to do more to retain and attract world-class talent to the U.S. and these regulations put us on a path to do that”, to the media in Washington.

The DHS said in its initial announcement of the proposed changes that it, “recognises that the limitation on the period of stay is not the only event that could cause an H-1B worker to leave his or her employment and cause disruption to the employer’s business, inclusive of the loss of significant time and money invested in the immigration process. This rule will encourage H-1B skilled workers to not abandon their adjustment application because their H-4 spouse is unable to work.” The proposed rules granting employment rights to some H-4 visa holders were also

“intended to mitigate some of the negative economic effects of limiting H-1B households to one income during lengthy waiting periods in the adjustment of status process,” the DHS noted in 2013. The DHS said that, “Allowing certain H-4 spouses with the opportunity to work would result in a negligible increase to the overall domestic labour force. The benefits of this rule to retain highly-skilled persons, who intend to adjust to lawful permanent resident status.”

U.S. Company heads, including Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg was lobbying in Washington for the passage of bipartisan immigration reform legislation that would better permit U.S. companies to recruit highly talented foreign citizens. Despite the U.S. Senate passing a sweeping comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill in 2013 year, the Republican-led House of Representatives has blocked debates on the floor, ostensibly due to the concerns that a ‘path to citizenship’ for the nearly 11.5 million undocumented immigrants could have a potential negative impact on the U.S. economy. www.wishesh.com

The village was once well known for handloom silk products. Once famous for its handloom products now flourishing with power looms. The traditional weavers are very much upset due to the decline of handlooms. Narayanpet is famous for its silk handloom products. Narayanpet handlooms are well known for the durability of the colours used in the yarn. The mixture of colour gives the durability. The count used in weaving gives the softness and hardness of the fabric. Count means the number of threads used in the length and breadth for weaving known as warp and weft respectively. In Narayanpet 80 by 80 is the count used. Each and every thread of the Narayanpet handloom saree is hand woven. Each weaver works from home with all his / her family members helping in different steps of the process. It requires approximately 2 to 3 days (depending on the variety of saree) of continuous efforts for weaving a saree. The process of manufacturing a Narayanpet handloom Saree starts with dyeing the silk yarn. After dyeing and drying the yarn it is converted to thread and is loaded as warp into a beam and then it is loaded into the loom for actual weaving. It is also rolled over small sticks to use for wept. A Weaver can make 30 sarees from one beam of warp. It will take 40 to 45 days to complete the weaving of one beam. Narayanpet handloom sarees are traditionally woven in the interlocked-weft technique.

“

The design for the saree is initially drawn in a computer and then this is punched into a card and these cards are loaded in Jacard in the loom. Jacard is a box like structure which is fixed in the top of the loom. There will be needles in the Jacard which will read the punched cards and control the weaving of weft.

“

In Narayanpet only silk handloom sarees are weaved. Due to the high cost of silk yarn now the weavers of Narayanpet are struggling to continue in the profession. Now one can see only very rarely weavers weaving Narayanpet silk handloom products. Previously Narayanpet was full of talented weavers who used to do magic in the looms to produce the best handloom products.

Warangal

Telangana has two types of cuisines, Telugu cuisine and Hyderabadi cuisine. Telugu cuisine is the part of South Indian cuisine and is highly spicy. Telangana lies on the Deccan plateau and its topography dictates more millet and roti (leavened bread) based dishes. Jowar and Bajra features more prominently. Due to its proximity with Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and northwest Karnataka, it shares some similarities of the Deccan plateau cuisine. The region has the spiciest food amongst all other Telugu and Indian cuisines. Telangana has some unique dishes, such as jonna rotte (sorghum), sajja rotte (penisetum), or Uppudi Pindi (broken rice). In Telangana a gravy or curry is called Koora and Pulusu (Sour) is based on Tamarind. A deep fry reduction of the same is called Vepudu. Kodi pulusu and Mamsam (meat) vepudu are popular dishes in meat. Vankaya (Brinjal) Pulusu or Vepudu, Arintikaya (Banana) pulusu or Vepudu are one of the many varieties of vegetable dishes. Telangana palakoora is a spinach dish cooked with lentils eaten with steamed rice and rotis. Peanuts are added as special attraction and in Karimnagar District, cashew nuts are added.

Sakinalu also called as Chakinalu, is one of the most popular savories in Telangana, is often cooked during Makara Sankranti festival season. This is a deep-fried snack made of rice flour, sesame seeds and flavoured with ajwain (carom seeds or vaamu in Telugu). These savories are harder and spicier than the Andhra varieties. Garijelu is a dumpling dish similar to the Maharashtrian karanji, which is cooked with sweet stuffing or a savory stuffing with mutton or chicken kheema.

T

Hyderabadi cuisine is an amalgamation of Persian cuisine, Mughlai, Telugu and Turkish cuisines, developed by the Qutb Shahi dynasty and the Nizams of Hyderabad. It comprises a broad repertoire of rice, wheat and meat dishes and various spices and herbs. Hyderabadi cuisine contains city specific specialties like Hyderabad (Hyderabadi biryani and Hyderabadi Haleem), Aurangabad (Naan Qalia), Gulbarga (Tahari), Bidar (Kalyani Biryani) and others. The use of dry coconut, tamarind, and red chillies along with other spices are the main ingredients that make Hyderabadi cuisine different from the North Indian cuisine.

The major religions of Telangana are Hinduism and Islam, though Buddhism was the dominant religion up to the 6th century. It is the home of Mahayana Buddhism as revealed by the monuments of Nagarjunakonda. www.wishesh.com

NAIR

Prominent caste of Kerala

Nair soldier,an old picture

April /2015

Nair is a prominent caste belonging to the upper caste category in Kerala. They spreads all over the state. Ancient South Indian history, historians and foreign travellers referred to the Nairs as dignified martial nobility. The earliest reference to Nairs comes from the Greek ambassador Megasthenes. In his accounts of ancient India, he refers to the “Nayars of Malabar.

36

www.wishesh.com

Some sociologists are of the oppinion that the Nairs are not indigenous to Kerala, as many customs and traditions distinguish them from other Keralites. According to one theory, Nairs are descendants of the Newars of Nepal, who joined the Munda exodus and later migrated to Kerala. The most prominent arguments given in support of this theory are the presence of distinct pagoda-like architectural style of Nair Tharavaadus (Houses) and Temples and the practice of Marumakkathaayam (matrilinial) system of inheritance similar to both Nairs and Newars.

THERE IS ALSO A HYPOTHESIS ON THE BASIS OF MYTHOLOGY THAT THE NAIRS ARE NAGAS AND WERE KSHATRIYAS BELONGING TO THE SERPENT DYNASTY (NAGAVANSHAM) WHO REMOVED THEIR SACRED THREAD AND MIGRATED TO SOUTH TO ESCAPE THE WRATH OF A VENGEFUL PARASHURAMA. THE AFFINITY OF THE NAIR COMMUNITY TOWARDS SERPENT WORSHIP, THEIR MARTIAL PAST, AND THE ABSENCE OF THE SACRED THREAD LENDS SUPPORT TO THIS THEORY. The Travancore State Manual states, that there were indeed serpent-worshipping Nagas in Kerala who fought with the Namboothiris. According to Chattampi Swamikal, (considered as a guru of Nairs) who interpreted old Tamil texts, states that the Nairs were Naka (Naga or Snake) Lords who ruled as feudal lords in the Chera kingdom. This theory proposes Nairs to be descendants of the rulers and martial nobility of pre-brahmin Kerala There are mentions of the Nairs during the reign of the King Rama Varma Kulashekhara (1020-1102) of the second Chera dynasty, when the Chera Kingdom was attacked by the Cholas. The Nairs fought by forming suicide squads (Chavers) against the invading force. It is not clear whether the Cheras themselves were Nairs or the Cheras employed the Nairs as a warrior class.

The Appearance of the well nourished Nair is perhaps among the finest in all India. The men and women among the Nairs are models of neatness and simplicity particularly in their dress, food and living. www.wishesh.com

TRADITION

TRADITIONAL DRESS Males wear a Kaupinam (underwear) and a single strip of cloth, four or five feet in length, known as the Mundu or Dhothi, round the waist and another one thrown over the shoulder or worn like a shawl (veshti). The lower cloth is not tucked between the legs as in northern India but is left to hang loose to the ground. The upper cloth is known as the Neriatu which may be tied as a turban on the head while walking outside. The dress of the women is not generally distinguishable from the men. On festive occasions the Pudava (Two piece saree) is worn which are like a zari bordered mundu, also known as a Pattukara and blouse which is extremely popular among the Nair women. The mundu is still widely used by almost everybody in Kerala, though modern clothing, naturally, has found tremendous use as well.

FOOD AND DRINK Boiled rice and rice gruel known as Kanjee form the staple food of the Nairs. The coconut, jackfruit, plantain, mango and other vegetables are widely used in cooking. Coconut oil is used widely for frying. Ghee was used in well to do families and on festive occasions. Non-vegetarian food is not objectionable and fish is most commonly consumed. Beef is barred for the Nairs. Alcoholic drinks as a rule were prohibited.

VIVAHAM OR MARRIAGE The first ceremony is the Vivaha Nischayam or engagement. In this ceremony, an astrologer is consulted to set an auspicious date for the wedding. Horoscopes may or may not be compared depending on the wish of the individual or their families. After both families consent to the marriage, the groom and familly visits the bride’s home. This meeting may be a simple affair or a large celebration. During the celebration, there may be a mothiram mattal (ring exchange) ceremony. It is done at bride’s house, it is usually done around a lit nila vilakku (brass oil lamp). On the evening before the wedding, the families of both the bride and the groom gather in their respective homes to bless them. On the day of the wedding, the bride and the groom will separately visit a temple near their homes. The temple can belong to any God except Lord Ayyappan or Lord Hanuman as they are bachelors. Bride’s parents carry the mangalyasutram or taali, a necklace that is a symbol of eternal union, to be blessed by the priests. Upon returning home, the bride and groom touch the feet of the elders of the family and receive blessings. This is called Namaskaaram. The actual wedding may take place in a kalyana mandapam (a hall rented for the occasion), temple or hotel. The bride’s family receives the groom’s family at the entrance of the venue to the tune of nadaswarams (long wind-instruments) and the beats of the thakil (large drums beaten with curved sticks). The groom stands on a wooden plank while the bride’s younger brother washes his feet. The bride’s aunts perform aarti for the groom with a thaali (platter), on which are arranged wicks made of twisted cotton. The groom is then escorted to the mandapam, One girl carries the changala vatta (sacred oil lamp), while another carries the ashtamangalyam. The girls following the first two, carry the taala poli (platters of rice, turmeric, and flowers on which oil lamps made of coconut shells are placed). With his parents on either side, the groom follows the girls around the mandapam and seats himself on the right side of the canopy, which is decorated by flowers, fabric, palm, and banana stalks.

ties the thali around the bride’s neck to the beating of drums. He is assisted by the bride’s uncle because on no account should the thaali be allowed to fall. In some Nair communities, the traditional thaali is a gold pendant strung on a yellow thread. The bride has to wear this for three days after the wedding ceremony. After the three days have passed, the thread is replaced by a golden chain. After the tying of the thaali, the groom gifts the bride a sari and a blouse on a platter. This signifies that he will now assume the responsibility of providing for her. The groom’s mother also gifts the bride with some jewelry at this time. The couple then exchange garlands accepting each other as life partners. The bride’s father then places the bride’s hand in the groom’s, thus handing over his daughter to the groom in holy matrimony. The couple is then escorted to a room by their older relatives, who bless them. After the marriage ceremony, the bride gets a send-off from her house. The couple leaves for the groom’s house escorted by a few people from the bride’s family. The groom’s mother and older female relatives perform aarti with an oil lamp and receive them at the entrance. Both bride and groom enter the house, right foot forward.

Seemantham (also known as Pulikudi or Garbhamthozhikkal) denotes the preparation for childbirth and is performed between the fifth and seventh months of pregnancy. On an auspicious day, after being massaged with homemade ayurvedic oil, the woman will have a customary bath with the help of the elderly women in the family. Naming ceremony ceremony is performed on the 28th day after birth of the child, as this is the first time the nakshatram (star) of the child repeats according to the Malayalam calendar. During the ceremony, charadu (thread), one in black cotton and the other in gold are interwined and tied around the waist of the child.

The bride is then escorted by her aunt to the mandapam to the sound of the nadaswarams and thakils. All those who are present on the mandapam stand when the bride arrives. She stands facing to the east, with the groom facing her. At the auspicious moment set by the astrologer for the muhurtham (the most auspicious time), the groom

Choroonu or feeding ceremony is the ritual of feeding rice to the child for the first time. Rice is the primary food of Nairs, which is why the first intake of purified rice is celebrated on an auspicious day.

GOVARDHAN DHARAN

-UMBRELLA OF PROTECTION It was a rainy season. The sun was smiling weakly behind dark clouds. Brindavan, a charming village, was transformed into a lush heaven with healthy, greener vegetation and plenty of rains for the people. Everyone in the village was happy. Little Krishna woke up and wondered was it not yet morning, but the sounds coming from the streets were loud and noisy. Curiously he got up and peeked outside his window. A crowd had gathered before his house. Several men and women were sweeping the streets clean. The roads were being decorated with garlands and lamps. Krishna was surprised at the sight, as he had seen since his birth that in the rainy season, the villagers slept till late in the morning. April /2015

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ “Is it a festival today? Or is anybody getting married?” he wondered. He left his home to take a bath in the river. While coming back, he saw his father Nanda overseeing the men in the streets. “Father, what is happening on the streets?” Krishna asked his father. “The Gopalas are preparing to celebrate a festival to worship Lord Indra,” said Nanda. “This year, there has been a rainfall more generous and everybody is happy with the fertile crops. Since Indra is the God of rains, we should thank Him for being so gracious in his blessings!” “How do you say that Lord Indra is the one who’s causing rains, Father?” Krishna frowned in disagreement. “Of course it’s Indra who’s causing the rains, son. He is surely the reason for our good fortune. He’s the God of the clouds and he rules them, so he is the one who has blessed us with good rain this year,” he replied hesitantly to his son. “No, father!” refused Krishna firmly, “you’re all mistaken. Govardhan Mountain is our real friend. More than the clouds above, the mountain in our village have helped us.” “How can you say that?” asked Nanda. “The fertile mountain sends the signals in the air and creates clouds that drift over the Brindavan and gives us rains.” replied Krishna. “So whom should we praise and worship? Not Indra, but Govardhan!” Nanda and the other Gopalas gasped in surprise. How could Krishna dismiss Lord Indra, God of the clouds and direct them to worship a mere mountain instead! “Yes, father,” continued the boy. “Who gives us medicine in the form of magical herbs and plants? Who sends us clean water and air from the top of its peak? “And who gives us good www.wishesh.com

grass for our cows, so that they give us milk that’s sweeter than honey? It is Govardhan!”

The initial surprise and doubts of the Gopalas were beginning to disappear. They now began to see Krishna’s point. “So why should we not worship the mountain?” Krishna continued. “It is wiser to give thanks to something which is right before us, rather than some deva who lives comfortably in the heavens.”

HEARING KRISHNA’S WORDS, THE GOPALAS WERE TOTALLY CONVINCED. THEY ALL AGREED TO WORSHIP GOVARDHAN THAT YEAR, INSTEAD OF LORD INDRA. BUT NANDA WAS APPREHENSIVE, FOR HE FEARED THAT THIS SHIFTING OF LOYALTY MIGHT INCUR THE WRATH OF GOD UPON THEM. AND HIS FEAR CAME TRUE. UP IN THE SKIES, LORD INDRA WAS LISTENING TO THIS CONVERSATION IN ANGER AND FURY. “So that little cowherd boy has stopped the celebrations in my 41

honour!” he thought in indignation. Lord Indra’s pride was insulted by the Gopalas’ decision to worship Govardhan, instead of him. In his anger, he decided to punish the people of Brindavan. “All these years, I have heard their plea and helped them to prosper. And is this what I get in return? It’s time they know who the real God is here! I’ll send the most dangerous rains and thunderstorms to Brindavan,” he said. “They will destroy the whole village of Brindavan. Let them see who saves them then!” Using his divine powers, Lord Indra created clouds that seemed to be darker than the midnight sky. They looked devilish and fearsome. “Go and destroy Brindavan!” he ordered. And they heeded their Master’s command. Without any delay, they grouped together to form a menacing army of clouds and raced towards the village where Krishna and several innocent families lived. “This will be enough for them” thought Indra and laughed aloud. After a delicious lunch, the people of Brindavan were dozing in their homes. Suddenly they heard a terrible sound. Everybody was alarmed and came out of their homes. What they saw outside took their breath away. It was noon in Brindavan, but nobody could say it was so. The whole village had become pitch dark. The sun was nowhere to be seen. Instead, black and terrible looking clouds had invaded the village. They enveloped the whole place in a thick mist, darkening the day, making it gloomy. The clouds looked evil and menacing, but they stood suspended in air and didn’t rain. It seemed as if the clouds were waiting for somebody, or rather, for some signal. The people of Brindavan watched in fear and awe. They were April /2015

spellbound. Nothing like this had ever happened in their lives! Krishna heard the frightened voices of the villagers. He was curious and came out of his house. But as soon as he stepped out, there was a great roar and the black clouds poured rains over Nanda’s house. It seemed as if this was what the monstrous clouds had been waiting for. The demonic clouds seemed to have some fiendish scheme. From Nanda’s house, they quickly spread themselves over the town. The dark sky seemed to open with a vengeance. Hard rain came down in torrents, flushing away the cattle and the frail huts. The mere thatched roofs were no match for the terrible downpour. “Run! Screamed a man in terror and people started to run for their lives. They ran in all directions, to save their family and belongings. The hard and blinding rain lashed over their faces, as if giving slaps for some unknown offence. Nowhere could they take any shelter for nothing seemed to be strong enough against this mighty cloudburst. The innocent and helpless people wailed in the face of such a calamity. They prayed for some divine help. But the clouds were merciless. They now had the support of blinding lightning and ear-splitting thunder. Every now and then, lightning struck a fertile tree and destroyed it. Thunder rumbled throughout the ordeal, shaking’ people’s nerves and panicking them. Nanda felt helpless on seeing his people panic. “Do you see, son? This is no ordinary rainstorm. This seems to me to be the punishment of our transgression. It is difficult to escape the wrath of Gods. That is why we worshipped Lord Indra all these years, Krishna,” he said to his April /2015

son gravely. “Because we decided to ignore Lord Indra this year, he’s punishing us. Now, innocent people are suffering because of your idea... what to do now?” Krishna looked at the skies. “Ah, vain Indra!” he thought in fury. “I understand your plan. You want to teach us a lesson, don’t you? But first, you need one! And soon I will crush your ego.” “First, we need to focus on making the people see reason, Father,” he said and walked to the centre of the town. Using his most commanding voice, he called out: “O people of Brindavan. Look at me. Do not run. Do not panic!”

THE GOPALAS LOOKED AT KRISHNA MISERABLY. THEY HAD KNOWN THE BOY FOR LONG. THEY KNEW THAT HE WAS NOT AN ORDINARY MORTAL AND POSSESSED SOME MYSTERIOUS POWERS. BUT WHAT CAN THE BOY POSSIBLY DO IN SUCH A SITUATION? “THIS IS OUR ENTIRE FAULT!” SOMEBODY MURMURED. “WE INSULTED INDRA AND NOW HE’S PUNISHING US,” CONTINUED ANOTHER.

is right. This is indeed an evil plot of Lord Indra,” replied Krishna, looking at the man. “But like before, Govardhan would help us once again. Come this way and I will show you how!” he declared and led them to the mountain. Krishna looked up and smiled at the clouds. And in a blink of the eye, he lifted Govardhana Mountain, like an umbrella over the people. People forgot to breathe. A small boy had lifted a mountain on his little finger! Up above, Indra was bewildered. “How can a mere child lift a mountain?” he thought. He hadn’t ever seen such a feat achieved by anybody, leave alone a child. “You should have understood it by now. But you did not. Pride and arrogance has clouded your common sense, Indra!” sounded the voice of Brahma. Lord Indra looked at the God of Creation in confusion. “Don’t you know that Krishna is a divine child?” continued Brahma. “Aren’t you aware that he is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu? Shame on you!” Indra was humbled and stopped the rains. As a sign of his apology, he ordered the clouds to shower rose petals from the skies. Every Gopala whooped in delight at their darling boy for his strength and wisdom. They now saw what a godly child lived amidst them. The very act of little Krishna reminds us about the importance of preserving environment for the survival of human kind. He gives the message that it is important to worship the mother earth more than the worship of demigods.

BENEFITS & USES

BENEFITS OF JAGGERY Natural sweetner & good source of nutrients

Aids in digestion & redces constipation

Cleans respiratory tracts, lungs, food pipe, stomoch & intestine

Provides energy over an extended period of time

Palmyra jaggery with water has coolong effect on body during summer

Date palm jaggery has a warming effect on body in winter Uses: Seasoning building material, toothpaste, cattle feed, hunting bait, religious purposes, fish bait

The benefits of jaggery include its ability to cleanse your body, act as a digestive agent, sweeten your food in a healthy manner, and provide good amounts of minerals. Before we go into the details of the benefits of jaggery, let me tell you that all good things do not come in nice, good-looking packages. This is true for foods as well, particularly when we talk about jaggery. Most of you might not find its look very interesting or attractive as a food item, because the dark yellow color and its amorphous and sometimes gooey look is more than enough to keep some of you away. Of course, there are probably some daring dieters who say that jaggery’s color and appearance is far more appealing and interesting than that monotonous, white, crystalline sugar. After all, color is all around us, and one of the best parts of the visual experience of life! Live a little! April /2015

50

Jaggery often sticks to your hands and lips while eating, which can also be a nuisance. In Myanmar, the native country of jaggery, people don’t notice this, since they have been eating jaggery since childhood and it is a mouth watering sight for most of them. Furthermore, if you hear about the way it is manufactured and stored and the standards of hygiene there, you might never think of eating it, but it is far-far better than those frozen meats and so called hygienically packed food items with chemical preservatives in them that are stored for weeks or months before reaching the consumer. In fact, in some cases, the jaggery blocks may contain some particles of sand or ash that flies in from the oven, but I don’t think they are unhygienic in any way. We eat a multitude of dust and pollutants every day while we breathe and talk. Still doubtful? Well, let’s alleviate the rest of that doubt with the spectacular health benefits of jaggery. www.wishesh.com

Health Benefits of Jaggery SWEETENING AGENT: There are plenty of natural and artificial sweetening agents available on the market, with good old white sugar right at the top. However, almost all of them are just plain sweeteners. How nice would it be if such magnificent sweeteners could add some extra burst of taste as well? The answer to that question can be found by eating jaggery. The first benefit of jaggery is that it is a colorful, taste explosion when consumed, and secondly, it is a sweetener. You can experience the difference yourself. Taste plain sugar and jaggery one after another, and it will be very clear to you. That was only the sugar cane jaggery, a single flavor. Now you should taste the Date Palm Jaggery, Palmyra Jaggery, or one of the other flavors available. ENERGY FOOD: We know that carbohydrates, consumed in our food, give us energy upon oxidation. The simpler the carbohydrate, the sooner the energy released. On one hand, this simplicity comes as a blessing for athletes and people suffering from serious fatigue because they need instantaneous energy and can find quick relief. Therefore, sugar and glucose is the proper carbohydrate for them, because they are very simple and are absorbed in the blood stream almost instantaneously to fill them with a sudden burst of energy.

But on the other hand, studies show and doctors advise that this sudden rise in sugar or energy level can be a major threat to the integrity of internal organs, particularly in the case of diabetics. In the long run, this may even give rise to diabetes, since the fluctuating sugar levels may affect the pancreas, to the point where the pancreas may lose its capacity to release large amounts of insulin at once to counter the quick increase in the body’s sugar level. This sudden uplift may cause severe damage to kidneys and

www.wishesh.com

eyes, can raise blood pressure, and create a number of other problems in the related organ systems. Jaggery is a more complex form of carbohydrate than plain sugar. When you eat jaggery, it is digested and absorbed gradually and releases energy over an extended period of time. This can provide the eater with warmth and energy for a more extended period without harming their internal organs. DIGESTIVE AGENT: This may sound strange, but in India, it is recommended to take a few grams of jaggery after a heavy meal or after eating meat because it facilitates digestion. Jaggery activates the digestive enzymes and itself changes to acetic acid in the stomach, thereby speeding up digestion and making the process go very smooth, reducing strain on the intestines and digestive tract. CLEANSING AGENT: You may not normally connect sweeteners and sugars with “cleansing the body”, but that is actually one of the well-proven benefits of jaggery. Jaggery effectively cleans the respiratory tracts, lungs, food pipe, stomach and intestines. It pulls out dust and unwanted particles from the body, while also giving relief from constipation, perhaps due to presence of fiber in it. Reducing constipation and stimulating the movement of the bowels further cleanses the body of the toxins which jaggery just cleaned out and prepared for excretion. SOURCE OF MINERALS: Unlike sugar, jaggery is rich in minerals, mainly iron with traces of other mineral salts. While most of the iron in jaggery comes through its processing in iron vessels, the other minerals come directly from the sugar cane juice, since the juice does not undergo refinement or bleaching of any kind. Therefore, jaggery is a very good source of minerals for the body.

RELATIONSHIP

ARE YOU READY FOR

CASUAL

SEX WITH NO

EXPECTATIONS? A while ago, kissing was limited to only formal way of greeting each other, till it became a way of expressing love for each other. Today, the young generation is speaking freely about kissing and sex taboo. These seem to interest today’s generation, but the question arises are they convenient with that even on bed.

IS A E R E H T E TO D I S N DOW SEX, L A U S CA TOPS S T I S IME T E M O S SUAL A C G BEIN

In this rat race world no one has time for leisure, but all busy with jobs, it becomes infeasible to maintain full time relationship. Early days may look like having a whale of time, but later it can be a roller coaster ride. Some of us don’t have the time or patience to handle the relationship for long term, still everyone constantly lookout for ‘CASUAL SEX’.

IS IT THAT SIMPLE ON BED AS WE SPEAK! Sometimes, it may end with wrong turns if we are not aware of few things. So how do you go with it? According to relationship counselor, Rachna Kothari,

April /2015

www.wishesh.com

You have to have a clear mind like no expectations, no terms, no emotions, no complaints, but only fun as this can hurt you and can even ruin good relation with your friend. The day after that won’t be the same if you get emotionally involved.

SO PREPARE YOUR MIND IF AT ALL HAVING! You need to ensure your ‘FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS’ relationship is not the key link of your life. You need to know the difference between ‘FWB’ and full term relationship. Unlike ‘FWB’, the later becomes your primary relationship which needs a lot of support, understanding, encouragement, caring and love.

So ladies, few rules you must think about before deciding to go all out. Do right, so that you don’t regret! 1. No room for distress, if you see him with other girls neither you can blame him for those things. 2. You cannot complain him for not calling you and keeping updated every day about himself. 3. The last night sex should not become an emotional attachment. It must finish then and there. 4. Don’t expect him to cuddle or look into your eyes every time he sees you as he is not your love partner. So if you are fine with the experiment, then you can proceed. In fact, you get better at all form of foreplay and sex, even enjoy the process. So go out and enjoy the thrills of intercourse!

“MUTUALLY, IF TWO FRIENDS AGREE THAT THERE ARE NO EXPECTATIONS, NO COMMITMENTS, THEN IT’S NOT DETRIMENTAL BECAUSE THEIR ATTITUDES ARE SET RIGHT FOR THIS. BUT FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE THAT LOVEMAKING AND NOT MECHANICAL SEX IS WHAT’S IMPORTANT, IT IS OBVIOUSLY DETRIMENTAL AS IT VIOLATES EVER BIT OF THEIR EXPECTATIONS.” The opposite sex must be in mutual with you, before having great sex without any fuss. Without each other consent proceeding ahead is like behaving as fool and committing mistake as this sort of relationship may not be acceptable by many.

KONARK

MAGNIFICENT SUN TEMPLE Konark is situated at a distance of 35 K.M. from the famous religious and tourist centre of Puri and the capital city of Bhubaneswar (65 K.M.) in the state of Orissa, India. Orissa unlike many other parts of India has the prized distinction of possessing an uninterrupted series of temples illustrating the history of the welldefined Kalinga (former name of Orissa) from its very inception to decline and the Sun Temple of Konark marks the highest point of achievement. Konark, the seat of World famous Sun Temple, located in the District of Puri, forms one of the three points of the “Golden Triangle of Tourism” in the State of Orissa, the other two being Bhubaneswar, the city of Temples and Puri, the abode of Lord Jagannath. The Temple chariot of the Sun God on the golden sands of the Bay of Bengal is a 13th Century architectural marvel. Konark is not merely a symbol of Orissa’s great architectural craftsmanship, but also the most sought after centre of attraction for tourists from all over the World. On the east sea coast houses the ruins of a temple, exquisitely built to resemble a gigantic chariot with impeccably carved wheels, columns and panels. It stands as a mute reminder of the times when Orissan architecture has reached its pinnacle. www.wishesh.com

TRAVELOGUE

HISTORY King Narasimha Deva-I of the Ganga Dynasty had ordered this temple to be built as a royal proclamation of the political supremacy of his dynasty. A workforce of 12 hundred artisans and architects invested their creative talent, energy and artistic commitment for an exhausting period of 12 years. However the completion of the construction was nowhere near sight. The king issued a final command that the work be completed by a stipulated date. The team of architects headed by Bisu Maharana was at its wit’s end. It was then that Dharmapada the 12 year old son of the chief architect Bisu Maharana arrived there as a visiting onlooker. He became aware of the anxiety looming large among the architects. Although he did not have any practical experience of temple construction, he was thorough in his study of the theories of temple architecture. He offered to solve the confounding problem of fixing the last copping stone at the top of the temple. He surprised everyone by doing that himself. But soon after this achievement the dead body of this adolescent prodigy was found on the sea beach at the foot of the temple. It is stated by some that according to the legend of Dharmapad, due to suicide of Dharmapad on the temple just after placing its crowning stone, the temple lost its sanctity and considered as an unfortunate element and was thus rejected. But it is recorded in the Madala Panji and many historians are of opinion that Sun god had been established in the temple and was being worshipped regularly for years together.

The great poet of Orissa Sri Radhanath Ray in his Poetry ‘Chandrabhaga’ has narrated a story about the cause of the fall of temple. According to that Poetry, Sumanyu Rishi (saint) cursed the Sun god for his ill-behavior towards his daughter Chandrabhaga, who committed suicide. Hence the temple of the Sun god fell down.

It is said that in the part there was a load stone on the top of the Sun temple and due to its magnetic effects it was drawing vessels passing through the Konark sea resulting in heavy damage. In others view due to the magnetic effects of the load stone placed on the top of the Sun temple the compass fitted in the ships to show the direction, was being disturbed and was not functioning properly and it was a troubling task in the part of the captains to drive their vessels in right direction. So to make the shipping save, the Muslim voyagers took away the load stone from the Sun temple. This load stone on the temple was working as the central stone, keeping all the stones of the temple wall in a balance. Due to its displacement the temple walls lost their balance and fell down in course of time. The most popular cause rests with the Kalapahad as the root of the fall of Konark temple. According to the history of Orissa, Kalapahad invaded Orissa in 1508. Including Konark temple, he had also destroyed a number of Hindu temples in Orissa. It is described in the Madala Panji of Puri Jagannath temple that Kalapahad attacked Orissa in 1568 and it was an evil hour for Orissa. Including Konark temple he broke most of the

images in most of the Hindu temples in Orissa. Though it was impossible to break the Sun temple of Konark, the stone walls of which are of 20 to 25 feet thick he somehow managed to displace the Dadhinauti (Arch stone) and thus made a way for the temple to collapse. He also broke most of the images on the other sides of the temple of Konark. Due to displacement of the Dadhinauti, the temple gradually collapsed and the roof of the Mukhasala also got damage due to the stroke of the stones falling down from the temple top. Consequent upon, Orissa came under the Muslim administration in 1568 and there were constant attempts to destroy the Hindu temples. The Pandas of Puri, to save the sanctity of the Puri temple, took away Lord Jagannath from the Srimandir and kept the image in a secret place. Similarly, it is said that the Pandas of Konark took away the presiding deity of the Sun temple out of the temple and put under sand for some years. Latter on the said image was removed to Puri and kept in the temple of Indra in the compound of the Puri Jagannath temple. Konark was as glorious a city for Sun worship as for commercial activities. After the cessation of these activities, Konark turned to a deserted place and in ravages and it became a field of pirates and wild animals. As a result Konark left to develop as a dense forest for years together. In 1626 the then king of Khurda, Raja Narasimha Dev, son of Purushotham Dev took away the Sun image to Puri along with two other moving deities - Sun and Moon. Now they are found in a temple in the compound of Puri Jagannath temple. In the year 1779 a Marahatta Sadhu had taken away the Arun Pillar from Konark and put it in front of the Lion’s Gate of Puri Jagannath temple. Thus by the end of 18th century Konark lost all its glories and had been turned to a dense forest. The measures adopted for the conservation of Konark temple have become a part of the history due to its extensiveness. Though the temple was built in 13th century it drew the attention of Government for its conservation only in the last part of the 19th century.

LEGENDS “Konarka”, the place bears a name composed of two World elements: Kona meaning corner and Arka meaning the Sun. The Sun god worshipped in Ark Kshetra is also called Konark. In ‘Brahma Purana’ the Sun God in Ark-Kshetra has been described as Konaditya. So it is evident that the place where the Kona Aditya (or Kona-Arka, the Sun god) was worshipped was also popularly called Konark. It is described in Purushotham Mahatmya that Lord Vishnu after killing the demon Gayasur, to commemorate the glory of his victory, placed his Shankha (conch) in Puri, Chakra (disc) in Bhubaneswar, Gada (mace) in Jajapur and Padma (lotus) in Konark and they were later known 69

HISTORY

Indore is the only city of India that has both an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). As Indore expands, it shares its border with two cites, Ujjain and an industrial town called Dewas. Ujjain is one of the seven sacred cities of India as per Hindu tradition, having many famous temples and is a major tourist destination. Dewas is famous for the RBI press and hosts several automobile parts manufacturing companies. Formerly, the city of Indore was known by many different names. The first expected name of the city was Indreshwar which was named after the Indreshwar Temple in the city. The present name, Indore, originated from the Indreshwar temple constructed in 1741 by Ved Manuj. During the days of the Maratha Empire Indore was an important hub between the Deccan and Delhi. However after the death of Madhavrao Peshwa, the Maratha Empire disintegrated and Indore was declared the capital of the April /2015

Holkar state, until Rani Ahalyabai Holkar moved the capital to Maheshwar. The founders of Indore were the ancestors of the present zamindars of the region which spread from the banks of Narmada to the borders of Rajputana. Their headquarters were at a village called Kampel. In Mughal times, the founders of these families received the title of Chaudhari, which established their claim to the land. In the 18th century, the control of Malwa passed to the Peshwa clan, and the Chaudharis came to be known as “Mandloi”s (derived from Mandals meaning districts). The Holkars conferred the title of Rao Raja upon the family. The family retained its possessions of royalty, which included having an elephant, Nishan, Danka and Gadi even after the advent of Holkars and also retained the right of performing the first puja of Dushera (Shami Pujan) before the Holkar rulers. Under Mughal rule, the family enjoyed great influence and was accorded confirmatory sanads by 74

the Emperors Aurangzeb, Alamgir, and Farukhshayar, confirming their ‘Jagir’ rights. Rao Nandlal Chaudhary Zamindar, upon visiting the court of Delhi, received a special place in the emperor’s court along with two jewel studded swords (now on display in the Royal British Museum under the family’s name) and confirmatory sanads. Raja Savai Jai singh of Jaipur, a personal friend of his, gifted him with a special “Gold Langar” which guaranteed a special place to him in all the Durbars of India. The family’s respectability and influence over Malwa was instrumental in the ascent of the Peshwas and Holkars to rulership of this region. Rao Nandlal Chaudhary, the founder of Indore, was the Chief Zamindar (landlord), and had an army of 2000 soldiers. In 1713, Nizam was appointed as the controller of the Deccan plateau area, which renewed the struggle between the Marathas and the Mughals. While visiting the temple of Indreshwar near the banks of www.wishesh.com

river Saraswati, Rao Nandlal found the location to be safe and strategically located, being surrounded by rivers on all sides. He started moving his people in, and constructed the fort of Shree Sansthan Bada Rawala to protect them from harassment by Mughals. The city was named Indrapur (after Lord Indreshwar), and eventually came to be known as Indore. Baji Rao Peshwa finally took control of Malwa in 1733 A.D. Malhar Rao Holkar was one of the four signatories who guaranteed the proper fulfillment of the conditions. Upon victory the Peshwas appointed Malhar Rao Holkar as a “Subhedar”, which marked the beginning of Holkars’ reign in Malwa. Thus, Indore came to be ruled by the Maratha Maharajas of the Holkar dynasty. The dynasty’s founder, Malhar Rao Holkar,

www.wishesh.com

(1694–1766), was granted control of Malwa Maratha armies in 1724, and in 1733, was installed as the Maratha governor of the region. By the end of his reign, the Holkar state was de facto independent. He was succeeded by his daughter-in-law Ahalyabai Holkar who ruled from 1767 to 1795. She ruled from a palace-fort at Maheshwar, south of Indore on the Narmada River. Ahalyabai Holkar was an architectural patron who donated money for the construction of Hindu temples across India. In 1818, the Holkars were defeated by the British in the Third Anglo-Maratha War, and the Holkar kingdom became a part of the British Raj. As a result of this defeat in the Battle of Mahidpur, the treaty of Mandsaur was signed, through which the Cantonment town of Mhow was handed over to the British. The treaty also decreed that the capital

75

of the Holkar state would shift from Maheshwar to Indore. Indore is the ‘karmbhumi’ of Guru Radha Kishan. There are many respected names from the state who participated in the Indian freedom struggle but his simplicity, selflessness and complete insulation from material desire sets him apart from many others who held high offices in Independent India. After India’s independence in 1947, Indore, along with a number of neighbouring princely states, became part of the Indian state of Madhya Bharat. Indore was designated the summer capital of this newly created state. On November 1, 1956, Madhya Bharat was merged into Madhya Pradesh and Bhopal was chosen as the capital. The city palace was the seat of administration of the rulers of the Malwa region – The Holkars (26 May 1728 to 20 April 1948).

HISTORY

DEOGURADIA: In a small picturesque village of Deoguradia, 8 kms from Indore, on Nemawar road, stands the monolithic rock temple built in 7th century and redone in 18th century by Ahalyabai Holkar. Also known as Garuda Tirth, it has a water outlet in the shape of of Gomukh from which water flows out almost as in Abhishek. The original Shivalinga is 12 ft under water in a sunken temple above which the present temple is constructed. On every Shivratri, a fair is held in honour of the diety - Shri Gutkeshwar Mahadeo.

GOMATGIRI: In 1981, the M.P. government donated a hillock to the Jain Samaj, who constructed a 21 feet statue of Gomateshwar, a replica of the Bahubali statue of Shrawanbegola. Also built are 24 marble temples with shikars, for each Tirthankar. Gomatgiri is approached by a lovely picturesque drive.

RAJWADA: Rajwada is a historical palace in Indore city. Built by the Holkar about two centuries ago. This seven storied structure is located near the Chhatris and serves today as a fine example of royal grandeur and architectural skills. The structure comprises two parts, the first one located at the heart of the city and the second one standing in the old part of the town. Rajbada palace exhibits a blend of Maratha, Mughal and French styles. The entrance is beautiful with lofty archway and a giant wooden door covered with iron studs. As one makes his way through the entrance, is greeted with a courtyard comprising arched Ganesha hall, a number of balconies, windows, and corridors, surrounded by galleried rooms. The lower three floors are made of stone and the upper floors are made of wood. Rajwada was burnt three times in its history, and thus converted into a garden till 2006. Present Maharani of Indore, H.H. Ushadevi Holkar, decided to rebuild the wada to its past glory. She invited architects Himanshu Dudwadkar and Shreya Bhargava to design this challenging project and in 2007 the Rajbada found its place back in history. It became the only historic structure in India to have been rebuilt with exactly the same style, materials and method of construction as those of 250 years ago. Recent renovations have recreated some of the old glory of this beautiful palace. Originally built to host functions for the royals, the hall is now used for art exhibitions and classical music concerts www.wishesh.com

Four of the seven satellites in the IRNSS will be in geosynchronous orbit; the other three would be positioned in geo-stationary orbit, some 36,000 km above the Earth. The national space agency has lined up many launches before March next year, such as PSLV to launch a commercial satellite from the UK, two navigation satellites, a GSAT series satellite and three satellites in IRNSS series are among the planned launches. A reusable launch vehicle will also be tested this year as a technology demonstrator.

“THE TESTS ON THE REUSABLE LAUNCH VEHICLE WOULD BE COMPLETE AND IN THREE MONTHS, ISRO WOULD BE ABLE TO LAUNCH IT,” ISRO chairman K.S. Kiran Kumar said. The configuration for a satellite for the use of SAARC countries as mooted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is being finalised and will be launched within 18 months, the ISRO chairman said. “WE ARE IN THE

PROCESS OF DISCUSSING WITH OTHER COUNTRIES TO FINALISE THE CONFIGURATION OF THE SAARC SATELLITE.” Cartosat satellites would be used to monitor illegal mining in the country. “THE

INDIAN BUREAU OF MINES HAS BEEN GIVEN THE TASK TO DRAW THE BOUNDARY LINES FOR THE MINES,” V.K. Dadhwal, Director of National Remote Sensing Centre said. ISRO was looking at the possibility of having an ion propulsion system to reduce the mass of the satellites, K. Sivan Director of Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre in Valiamala in Kerala, said. “WE ARE PLANNING TO TEST THE PROPOSED TECHNOLOGY IN A COMMUNICATION SATELLITE,” he said. As for the semicryogenic engine, which LPSC is working on, he said the engine was tested for 20 seconds and the time duration would be extended in future.

“FIRST ORBIT RAISING OPERATION OF IRNSS-1D IS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED BY FIRING THE APOGEE MOTOR AT 17.28 HOURS ON MARCH 29, 2015,” ISRO said on its website. Indian Space Research Organisation successfully launched the IRNSS-1D, the fourth in the series of seven navigation satellites on board its workhorse PSLV-C27 from the spaceport of Sriharikota. IRNSS-1D which will provide navigation, tracking and mapping service and has a mission life of 10 years, is the fourth in the constellation of seven satellites, which would be on par with US-based GPS once the full complement of spacecrafts are launched.

VAASTU CORNER

Vaastu for positive energy and equilibrium

Vaastu is considered as the interplay of various forces of nature involving the five elements of earth, water, wind, fire and ether and strives to maintain equilibrium as these elements influence, guide and change the living styles of not only human beings but every living being on earth. Vaastu literally means “house or dwelling place and its principles establish to create a harmony between the fine elements viz. Earth, Sky, Fire, Water and Air in the environment.

Vaastu Shastra unifies the science, art, astronomy and astrology. It is considered as an ancient mystic science for designing and building. Vaastu Shastra helps us to make our lives better and secure from things going wrong. It is an ancient building science which covers the philosophy and theory of Architectural works of construction. It is based on various natural energies, which are available free cost in atmosphere like: SOLAR ENERGY FROM SUN. LUNAR ENERGY FROM MOON

Vaastu is rational, as it is scientific, it is permanent as it is based on directions and directions are unchangeable. There are three forces in action to create harmony, wind, water and fire. If these forces are kept in their appropriate places, then there will be no disturbance. The biggest proof of vaastushastra can be found during the time of Ramayan and Mahabharat. Even in the cities of Mohanjodaro and Harappa the application of vaastushastra can be seen. Over the years, based on the knowledge in the Vedas, repeated studies on a number of buildings, offices, temples, houses, apartments have shown a positive correlation between the application of Vaastu principles and success. Geographical situation of an area affects the nature www.wishesh.com

thus the vastu for every place changes. Water in the Northeast is considered most auspicious and Japan has the largest water body in this direction, a reason for its being one of the most prosperous countries in the world. Mumbai again has water in the North East and the Atomic Power Plant (Agni) in the South East thus according to Vaasthu principles and the most powerful, prosperous place in India.

Singapore

The location and construction of the famous Balaji Temple, the most prosperous in India, are all according to Vaastu, water tank in the Northeast, kitchen in Southeast, and the Lord in Southwest facing East and so on. Studies conducted on cities like New York, London, Singapore, Hong Kong etc have shown they are according Vaastu principles. 81

YOGA PARIVRITTA TRIKONASANA E x t e n d e d Tr i a n g l e Po s e To improve hips, knee, ankle and shoulder as well as abdomen, back side of thigh, calf and scapular muscles.

Parivritta Trikonasana: · Parivritta - Revolved · Tri - Three · Kon - Angle · Asana - Pose

This is the fourth position in the Standing Series. It serves as a counterpose to the previous posture, Trikonasana, by twisting the hips in the opposite direction, opening the opposite shoulder, and lengthening the lateral collateral (outside) ligament of the knee. This posture combines a lengthening of the hamstrings with the first spinal twist in the Ashtanga-Vinyasa series. Practice of this posture will increase the flexibility of the hamstrings, the mobility of the spine, opening of the shoulders, and ability to balance. The following is a discussion of the position on the right side, as pictured. As an asymmetrical posture, it must be repeated on the left side. From Samasthiti*, inhale and step your right foot back ~3’ and pivot the body 180°, bringing the hips square towards the rear of the room. Turn the left foot out slightly to the left – 15° if your hips feel relatively tight or you have trouble balancing, and 45° at most. Bring the right heel in line with the left arch (see alignment section below for more on how to pick your stance). Raise both hands to the sides, parallel with the floor. Bring the right hand to the hip and stretch forward through the left hand, reaching towards the back wall as you lower your torso until it is parallel with the floor. Rotate the hips anteriorly (‘lift’ the buttocks’) as much as possible, lengthening the hamstrings fully and preventing the lumbar spine from curving. Do not begin to twist before you are sure that you have flattened your back – combining twist with a rounded back is a recipe for back pain, especially in positions such as this when the lumbar spine is lifting the weight of the upper body. If you are unable to maintain a neutral spinal curvature here, lift your torso upright until you can flatten the back (as shown in the righthand picture above). Lift your navel towards the spine and tuck the rib cage into the abdominal muscles to support the spine and relax the muscles of the back. April /2015

82

Exhale fully as you take the left hand to the outside of the right foot, placing the palm fully on the ground (above left). Alternatively, place the back of the left hand against the outside of the right leg as high as necessary to maintain proper spinal alignment (above right/variation 1). Lift the right hand towards the ceiling, opening the chest to face the side as the right (top) shoulder rotates up and back and the left shoulder presses forward. If possible, the right wrist should be aligned, floating over the center of gravity.

Gaze towards the top thumb, lengthening and twisting the neck.

Hold here for 5 breaths, then lift to a standing position; pivot 180° and practice on the left side. The atlas is the uppermost vertebrae, and serves as the connection between the spine and the skull

CONTRAINDICATIONS: ·

Low back pain / spinal injury – practice with doctor’s counsel and a qualified instructor. Correct posture is essential in this case to prevent a worsening of your condition.

·

If you have neck pain or a cervical spine injury, do not lift the left hand; keep it on the back or waist as pictured above; do not twist the neck to look upwards.

·

Torn or tender hamstrings: Practice this posture lightly or bend the injured leg at the knee until the hamstring heals. Taking the full position and stretching at your maximum will reinforce the injury – stretch at 30-50% of your capacity, gently lengthening and stimulating the muscle but not lengthening it fully.

·

Shoulder injury: modify hand position as necessary. If the top shoulder is painful, rest that hand on the lower back. If the bottom shoulder is painful, do not place any weight on it. Instead, use it only to help guide the torso.

Explanation Shloka

dhyayato visayan pumsah sangas tesupajayate sangat sanjayate kamah kamat krodho ‘bhijayate Meaning of Verse While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises.

Meaning of Shloka

dhyayatah--while contemplating visayan--sense objects pumsah--of the person sangah—attachment tesu--in the sense objects

One who is not in the service of the almighty is subjected to material desires while contemplating the objects of senses. The senses require real engagements and if they are not engaged in the transcendental loving service of the almighty, they will certainly seek engagement in the service of materialism. In the material world everyone is subjected to the influence of sense objects and the only method to get out of this puzzle of material existence is surrender unto the almighty. When Haridasa Thakura was a young devotee of the Lord, he was allured by the incarnation of Maya-devi, but Haridasa easily passed the test because of his unalloyed devotion to the almighty. A sincere devotee of the Lord shuns all material sense of enjoyment due to his higher taste for spiritual enjoyment in the association of the Lord. That is the secret of success. Through this verse Shri Krishna conveys the message to concentrate on what you do. If you do not have concentration, you will be attracted towards materialistic senses, through this he develops attachment towards lust and due to lust anger arises. Anger will destroy everything. So to avoid destruction one has to concentrate and fully surrender unto the Lord and thus overcome anger for a safe and secure future.

STORY Hunterrr is about Mandar Ponkshe (Gulshan Devaiah) who is a sex addict. He is attracted to girls from his childhood and he has multiple relations with girls. Apart from having an affair with a swimmer, Parul (Veera Saxena), Mandar also falls for a housewife Jyotsna (Sai Tamhankar) and ends up having a relationship with her, just to fulfill his sexual desire. As time passes he decides to get married to a girl through arranged marriage. He realizes that none of them are comfortable with him after knowing his past. This is when he meets Trupti (Radhika Apte), who is a modern, outspoken kind of girl. He decides not to reveal about his past and the rest of the movie is if Trupti comes to know about his past and will she marry him.

Analysis The first half of the movie is brilliant and it comes with lot of adult entertainment. The transformation of a boy into a guy has been well explained which leaves many in surprise. The sexual desire of an young man has been conveyed well. On the whole the complete first half of the film has been brilliant in narration with the leads performing their best. The second half of the movie has been interesting with adult comedy coming down and the factor of love replacing it. The complete second half of the movie has been very interesting except some flaws in the love making episodes between Gulshan and Radhika Apte. On the whole the second half of the film ends decent.

REVIEW

Performance Gulshan Devaiah who proved his worth earlier has delivered an outstanding performance in the film and is the asset for the film. Radhika Apte has been brilliant and confident with her character in the movie. Actress Sai Tamhankar is absolutely stunning and she can have any man fall flat for her. All others have given out their best for the movie. The story of the movie has been simple and what makes the film impressive is the screenplay along with the dialogues which does not need a brain to think. They have been straight and simple which catches everyone’s attention. The music has been adequate and the cinematography has been wonderful. The production values have been grand enough and the director has revealed the concept with lot of clarity and commitment.

Some of the shocking scandalous content in the trailer would also have to go in the film. Says a source from the CBFC, “The trailer had been passed by the previous CBFC team and it contained a lot of objectionable language. There is nothing we could do about it. However the language censored in the film was done according to suitability of the theme. We were aware that Hunterrr was a sex comedy. We went along with the risque dialogues as much as we could.”

However, the CBFC suggested instead of beeps, the objectionable portions of the dialogues be re-recorded to avoid jerks in the soundtrack.

Final Word Hunterrr is a brilliant execution of an adult concept in an engaging and entertaining way. Except some flaws in the second half, the movie has been worth watching. On the whole Hunterrr is worth watching.

www.wishesh.com

Says a source from the production house Phantom (who emerged triumphant last week with NH10), “We were asked to make changes in the dialogue, which we did. It was not that difficult since the actors are relatively less busy. If the film starred A-listers it would have been impossible to re-do the dubbing. But our very dedicated team of actors Gulshan Devaiya, Radhika Apte and Sai Tamhankar diligently went through the entire dubbing process again. We’ve substituted lines and words for what was seen by the CBFC as unacceptable verbal content. We’re now censored with an ‘A’ certificate and ready for release.” In the meanwhile, a controversy has been broken out over Hunterrr co-producer Anurag Kashyap’s comments about the earlier sex comedy Grand Masti. Kashyap’s statement that he wouldn’t see Grand Masti even if he was paid 5 crore rupees to do so has not gone down with the Grand Masti writer Milap Zaveri, who has blasted Kashyap. An unnamed representative of the production house Phantom says, “Anurag loves to shoot off his mouth. We’ve no control over what he says. We do not stand by his comments on Grand Masti. It was directed by a veteran filmmaker Indra Kumar whom we all grew up admiring. Hunterrr is a sex comedy too. There is no need to act holier-than-thou about our sex comedy being morally superior to others. When naked, everyone looks the same.” 91 April /2015

Exclusive Interview Raashi Khanna – Glamour alone cannot sustain you

Raashi Khanna is one of the most promising young heroines in the Industry today. She made her acting debut with John Abraham’s ‘Madras Cafe’. But in Telugu, it was Srinivas Avasarala’s ‘Oohalu Gusagusalade’ that made her very popular.

Raashi Khanna comes across as a very smart woman and she has been making some good career choices. Her next film is ‘Jil’ and she will be seen as Savithri in this movie.

Q) It is a pretty routine question but we have the character is to the director. How is she going to to ask this. How are you feeling about your talk. Are there any specific mannerisms or character traits? I don’t want to be myself in the character. I want upcoming release? (Smiles) I think we have delivered a great product as a team. There are all elements that are required for an entertainer. I am not an action person but I just loved the scenes in this movie. The rain fight will stand out. It is WOW.

to be the character.

I am confident that it will do well. We want people to walk out with a smile.

(Face lights up) I just love Hyderabad and I would like to settle down here. When I was in Mumbai, I used to crib about missing Delhi. But now, Hyderabad is my favourite place.

Q) Can you tell us something about your character? I am playing the role of Savithri, who is a very bubbly but traditional girl. It is a very character driven role.

Q) Compared to your previous films, you seem to have upped the glamour quotient for Jil. How much of a challenge was this?Acting for this role was a bit challenging. This is because Savithri’s character is very bubbly but I am not as bubbly in real life. As for the glamour, you will see that it is limited to the songs mainly. I had nothing in my mind while accepting this role. There was no agenda to be glamorous to change my image.

Q) As an actress, what kind of films would you like to do?I want every film of mine to be different

This is what I see whenever someone comes to me with a role.

Q) How do you like Hyderabad?

Q) What kind of a co-star is Gopichand? He is a very humble and down to earth guy and I wonder if he even knows what a big movie star he is. He does not get angry on sets and I actually asked him once about his secret to remaining so calm. He is very supportive and tries to bring out the best from his costars. He wants everything to be a collective effort. It was very comfortable working with him.

Q) What projects are you working on right now?I am working with Bengal Tiger, with Ravi Teja. That is the only confirmed project as of now. I am listening to other scripts and some projects are in the pipeline.

from my previous one. But honestly, things are not completely in my mind. I just don’t want to be typecast. I wish writers can pen more impactful characters for women. At the end of the day,we are actors. Glamour alone cannot sustain you for years to come. Even if the character is very small, it should have some impact.

Q) When a director pitches a role to you, what do you look for?I ask a lot of questions when the

We ended our conversation with Raashi on that note and wished her the very best for ‘Jil’. We hope you enjoyed reading this interview.

ARIES Mercury is in Aries until the 15th of April and it helps you to negotiate anything, a better position, a loan with better interest, more independence in a relationship…Mars is in your financial domain and it pushes you to compulsive buying. You have a hard time controlling your desires. Jupiter in Leo is really good for your love life, it gives a fun ambiance, and your relationship is passionate but neither heavy, nor clingy, just fine. Some Aries in a couple will share some secrets this month, but careful before speaking, make sure your partner can take it.

CANCER

TAURUS Mars is in Taurus the whole month of April and it gives you a fantastic energy, you wake up ready to go to work, run at the gym, and get out every evening without feeling tired. Your days are so active that you sleep deeply at night. A conflict with your father will find a resolution on the 22nd, you need to tell the truth, you have a hard time keeping your feelings inside, but some people need time to absorb it. You also want to speak about your future with your boss. This should go really well if you do it after April 15, when Mercury enters in Taurus. Love is passionate.

Your career is your priority because you don’t have the choice. Your company needs your skills and emergencies keep happening. Thanks to Uranus you find smart solutions to resolve everything even under pressure. You may be frustrated in your love life after April 12, it can be related to the fact that you are both busy with work, family and you don’t have much time for intimacy. May will be a better month for love, no doubt. You let go of a friendship as the friend may have become too critical of you or too different.

LEO Jupiter and Uranus bring a strong energy to your life, you are ready to make some changes but it will not be difficult or heavy, on the contrary it will be easy and fluid. Enjoy the good coincidences that make things right in your life. You help a friend, in return he or she helps in return for something you did not even ask for. You have news from friends who want to take you on a weekend. You are open to all the good events and your life is happy. Love is strong and you go to the same direction, making fun projects.

GEMINI Venus will be in Gemini on April 12 until May 8, if you are looking for love, good coincidences are happening and you end up meeting a new partner in incredible circumstances. Get out of your routine and accept any dinner especially if unexpected. At work, women will be really nice to you, your coworkers or clients, you are so charming. You may develop some breathing allergies, pollens for example. If you are in a couple you are closer and closer, the level of confidence for one another is high as well as respect. You enjoy also good friends’ company.

STARGAZING April /2015

104

www.wishesh.com

VIRGO

SAGITTARIUS

Family problems are important to you and even if you are not directly concerned, you want to help and fix the situations. Don’t feel bad if this spontaneous support is not accepted, let relatives handle their own problems, they can do it. Love is deep and sincere if you are in a couple. Single meet different partners but they are not convinced they should go forward with any of them. Friends are a good value as you can count on them to be on your side. You start a healthy lifestyle, sport, good food and sleep, you are disciplined enough for that.

SCORPIO You are confused about your financial situation, some expenses you did not expect take by surprise, you will need to bring your budget back to balance next month. You will be upset by the attitude of a brother or sister, and you tell what you think even at the risk to be confrontational. Love is romantic and Neptune brings a soft atmosphere between the 2 of you especially if he or she is Cancer or Pisces. It may be more complicated with a Gemini or a Taurus. At work, you succeed in a difficult mission and you will be proud of yourself.

LIBRA

Your relationship is your priority and you are talking freely about projects for the future, new home, baby maybe, another level of commitment anyway. Single, you meet a complicated person, so you will be flipflopping, one step forward, and one step backward. You are not simple either. At work, you try to adjust to some changes, but you are distracted and you may do some mistakes that need last minute checking. Reread your emails before sending them. Financially you need to pay attention to your expenses.

AQUARIUS

CAPRICORN You want to transform your home, and you are ready to throw away lots of stuff that you are not using anymore. Capricorns are usually keepers so getting rid of stuff is a huge step for them. You may rediscover some photos that will bring emotions because of the memories they express. Your love life is active, you do a lot of walk, running dancing, swimming together. No doubt you will be fit at the end of the month. Your health is really good after April 14th, as Venus will bring a good energy for well-being.

PISCES

Be sure that you are being honest with yourself and everyone around you on the 1st. Little white lies can be more damaging than painful truths, and painful truths are healthier than evasion or hoping it will all just go away. No, you don’t need to open your heart to everyone in your vicinity. But you do need to be straight with folks. By the 5th and 6th, you’re feeling like you might need to update your exercise routine. Do it! The stronger you are physically, the better things will go for you. Give some serious thought to the career path you’re following on the 10th and 11th. Is it the right one for you? You are in for some amazing news and awesome vibes and terrific experiences on the 17th and 18th. www.wishesh.com

Life is good for you in April: you may travel and you love that more than anything, your love life is positive, you share the same energy same appetite for life and fun. Single, you meet unexpectedly somebody who matches your criteria. You may have to change some projects because you want to spend some time together. You are able to reschedule everything just for love. At work, you are super motivated, wanting to prove yourself that you can do more, better or faster. And if you get compliments for that, it is better.

105

Love and romance and flowers and poetry are what’s on your mind on the tantalizing 1st. That’s great! You love to love, and you love to be loved, and this energy is really going to build you up. There’s just nothing quite like it for making you feel alive! By the 5th and 6th, you could be called on to help some friends navigate a tricky relationship dilemma. A light touch is key. Luck is on your side on the 12th and 13th. Be aware, at work, on the 10th and 11th - there is someone who is jealous of your success. Everything is working out pretty awesomely on the 19th and 20th and you feel happier and more content than ever. Why not visit a meditation course, or go to a dietician, or both, on the 25th or 26th? You are in good shape, but if there are any lingering anxieties or ongoing colds that you want to deal with, now is a good time. April /2015
