Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings As we get into June, most things start to come to a halt for the summer holiday which kicks off at the end of the month. Everywhere we go, we’ll hear of people who are starting to plan their holidays and where they will find themselves in the weeks ahead. In the same way as nature takes a rest during the winter months, most of us will take a break/rest during the summer. Soaking up the sun, spending quality time with children, grandchildren, family and friends. It’s a time for summer barbeques and enjoying the beaches at Lossiemouth or just heading for a walk on the many trails in and around Elgin and Moray. Time for reflection and rest are essential to our well-being. This example comes from God himself: “because on it (the seventh day) He rested from all the work of creating that He had done (Gen 2: 3 NIV)”. Rest is part of the Christian discipline to reflect and to take time out, not only on a physical level but also on an emotional and spiritual level. The discipline of rest

strengthens our understanding of God’s Day of rest. This can be a whole reflection on its own, but the discipline of rest and reflection entails us to take a break from our usual routine and to listen intently to God again. This can take different forms of reflecting. To reflect on what we eat, how we rest, how we talk to others, our relationships with others and also, where we are going in our personal life. That’s probably the reason why pilgrimages are becoming so popular again. The time of personal reflection and taking time out becomes an opportunity to re-align our purpose before God and His creation. In the context of rest, Hebrews 4 9 – 11 (NIV) reminds us: “There remains, then, a Sabbathrest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience” Jesus, himself set an example of sometimes taking himself away from

his disciples and the crowds to reflect and to rest, for example in Mark 1: 35 (NIV): “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” This can be a daily routine or a specific time of the year. It’s in these moments of reflection, solitude and perhaps even silence, that we can start a new engagement with the people around us. Jesus, indeed, continued his work of love and comfort to those around him, through his time of reflection and rest. We talk a lot about reflection, rest and well-being but fail to match our words with action. May we once again rediscover God’s virtue of rest in our lives as part of our reconnection with those around us. To be part of a community that loves, cares and comforts each other, each and every day. Rev Deon Oelofse St Giles & St Columba’s Churches Elgin

“Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein Revelation CH.1v3 Scripture indicates the time is coming when the nations will be gathered together to the battle of that great day of God Almighty into a place called Armageddon. The Lord Jesus Christ will then be here with His immortalised followers to bring about His Father's righteous judgements upon the ungodly and those hostile nations that are to invade God's land of Israel and will eventually establish His righteous and beneficial reign over all the earth.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times Many people will be turning their thoughts to summer holidays and for Moray families, relying on their car for their getaway, the price of fuel will be a factor. However, a mechanism to help keep the cost fair might not be far away. As Chair of the AllParty Parliamentary Group on Fair Fuel for UK Motorists and Hauliers, we are negotiating with the UK Government to introduce a voluntary PumpWatch scheme for motorists impacted by the cost of fuel. Moray is a rural area so the cost of fuel matters to drivers. A voluntary pump price monitoring code will allow fair competition, protect smaller independent garages and give full transparency so that bikers, motorists, van drivers and truckers are clear about when and how pump prices rise and fall as the price of oil changes. Hopefully, motorists will be encouraged by this initial step and we can now progress this matter for drivers in Moray and across the country. As usual I can be contacted on 01309 679253 or douglas.ross.mp@parliament.uk

On a recent visit to the Scottish Borders, I saw the impressive Leaderfoot Railway Viaduct which carried passengers until 1948 and freight until 1965, on the iconic Waverley Line, south from Edinburgh Against the odds, spirited campaigning saved the Kyle and Far North lines from Dr Beeching’s brutal rail closures in the 1960s. Imagine if other routes had been spared, what an iconic array of railway lines we could have had across the North; from Oban to Ballachulish to Forres to Aviemore. Now, even the modest reinstatement of some double track near Kirkhill would make a great difference to travel north of Inverness. The hugely successful Border Rail Line shows what can be done by reopening lines. Let’s hope there’s more re-openings to come.

As I write this blog, firefighters and other emergency services are working round the clock to tackle the most recent wildfire in the local area, which took hold at

Knockando. I want to pay tribute to the emergency services who have done a marvellous job tackling the fire and keeping local residents safe. The fire, which reached six miles long at some points, is incredibly serious and I was contacted by a number of constituents expressing concerns about the impact of the wildfire. It’s clear that a large area of the natural environment and wildlife habitats have been damaged, as well as some of our local forestry. We’ve seen an increasing number of wildfires taking hold in Moray which is a real concern and I’ve sought a report on the causes from the Fire Service. I’ve also contacted colleagues in the Scottish Government to find out to what extent the authorities are aware of the causes of wildfires and to measure the impact they have on our precious natural environment and habitats.

Brought to you by:

Red Thread (Yellow Be Aware Warning) ! We often have an outbreak of Red Thread fungal disease in this area now. It’s pretty widespread in this part of the world from June onwards, and especially if it is mild and wet. It’s a fungus, like moulds or mildews, and in the right conditions can attack grass leaves causing blotchy brown patches that leaves the lawn looking like it is drought stressed. Clearly if it’s been wet, that’s not the case. The picture below was taken previously on my lawn in late June.

If it’s a persistent outbreak, you can often see the grass producing a pinkish mould growth. That’s the mycelium or fungal bloom from the Red Thread spores. It doesn’t usually kill the grass, but it damages and disfigures the leaf causing a rather unsightly blotchy browning-off effect. Once established, the infection will usually persist through the season until the first frosts in October, when the frost kills it off for the year. I mention it now as it CAN be successfully treated with a fungicide, and when we apply a fungicide spray to affected lawns, it usually clears it in a week or so. Occasionally a repeat application is required. Once control is established however, it usually keeps the grass free of the infection for the rest of the season. You can get more information and pics at www.greenthumb.co.uk, or at www.rhs.org.uk (Royal Horticultural Society).

For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per month, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with half a million customers, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. One Spring Day By Nick Butterworth To celebrate thirty years of the Percy the Park Keeper and his animal friends, Percy and his animal friends are playing hide-and-seek in the park. The fox has found a great hiding place in Percy's workshop but when he falls into a pot of Very Strong Glue, he soon finds himself springing into an embarrassingly sticky situation! Is there anything his friends can do to help?

By Elizabeth MacNeal London. 1850. The Great Exhibition is being erected in Hyde Park and among the crowd watching the spectacle two people meet. For Iris, an aspiring artist, it is the encounter of a moment - forgotten seconds later, but for Silas, a collector entranced by the strange and beautiful, that meeting marks a new beginning. The intoxicating story of a young woman who aspires to be an artist, and the man whose obsession may destroy her world for ever.

As she works in the school `Inclusion Unit', trying to improve the fortunes of kids excluded from regular lessons because of their terrifying power to end learning in an instant. Or as she nurtures her multicultural poetry group, full of migrants and refugees, watches them find their voice and produce work of heartbreaking brilliance.

Dancing The Charleston By Jacqueline Wilson Mona and her aunt live in a little cottage on the edge of the Somerset estate, where her aunt sews wonderful dresses for the lady of the house When Lady Somerset dies and a new member of the Somerset family inherits the house, things begin to change for Mona. She has never really fitted in anywhere, but the new Bohemian atmosphere at the house offers opportunities for her to shine and to find new friends..

A journey into the sometimes vast and hidden worlds beneath our feet. From the ice-blue depths of Greenland's glaciers, to the underground networks by which trees communicate, from Bronze Age burial chambers to the rock art of remote Arctic sea-caves, this is a deep-time voyage into the planet's past and future.

From caber tossing to the hammer throw, long jump, high jump and more, the Forres Highland Games will provide you with a traditional Scottish experience. Games Day commences with a Pipe Band Procession through the centre of the Moray town before the Games’ flag is raised above the arena.

The Chieftain Opening this year’s event is Chieftain John Channon. John is no stranger to the Forres Highland Games and was once pitted against Scotland’s high jump champion and took part in many sprint events over the years.

SATURDAY 6TH JULY 2019 GRANT PARK, FORRES 12.30pm START Under U.K.A S.A.L & S.C.U rules

He said he was honoured to have been chosen for the Forres Highland Games which will take place in Grant Park on July 6, but admitted he will miss playing with the band on the day which last year won the trophy for deportment and dress. John who lives in Dyke said: “I couldn’t believe it when I got the letter. I kept it to myself for a while and when I eventually did tell the band, they of course all already knew. The worst kept secret. John added: “I really do consider this a great honour and I am really looking forward to the day and being able to meet the stallholders, visitors, those involved in organising the Games, the judges and adjudicators and of course the competitors. It’s a great day out and I am thrilled to be this year’s Chieftain.

WORLD GIN DAY

Saturday 8th June 2019

To get the most from your Isle of Harris Gin on World Gin Day, the key is to serve it simply, as an ice-cold Martini, a truly classic cocktail where the spirit is always the star.

Despite consisting of just three ingredients (good gin, dry vermouth and a garnish), the serving permutations of a martini are almost endless. You can enjoy yours wet, dry, up or on the rocks, shaken or stirred, dirty, or with a twist. However a Martini is made there is little place for the gin to hide, so the quality of the spirit used always determines how good the final drink is. Instead of recycling the ‘heads’ and ‘tails’ of their spirit run as others do, the Isle of Harris Distillers discard them, leaving only the very best of the distillate’s ‘heart’, making for a perfectly smooth and complex cocktail where the purity of their Outer Hebridean spirit shines. The simplicity of the serve lets the local, hand-harvested Sugar Kelp, which speaks of the Isle of Harris Gin’s connections to the sea, and the eight other carefully chosen botanicals, come to the fore. This collection of Martinis by some of the best bartenders in the UK was created especially for Isle of Harris Distillers by some of their favourite people and places.

Martini Facts The origins of the Martini are lost in time but the basic recipe is at least a century old. The Martini’s name and roots can be found as far back as 1888, with a recipe using Old Tom gin, sweet vermouth and bitters in Harry Johnson’s classic Bartender’s Manual The recipe for a Dry Martini first appeared in Harry Craddock’s legendary Savoy Cocktail Book of the 1930s. The Martini is perhaps the simplest of all mixed drinks, consisting of just three ingredients: Gin, Dry Vermouth and a garnish. To those who know, it is consider a true classic, with legendary bartender Dale DeGroff confidently calling it “the king of cocktails” Martinis must always be served cold. Ice cold. A Martini is always best served stirred, not shaken. Sorry Mr Bond.

A brief Martini history It’s a drink with a long history, its true origins long lost in time, but boasting a reputation stretching back at least 100 years. Over many decades, the Martini has been found at the heart of all manner of cultural hedonism, being enjoyed by icons of literature, music, stage, screen, politics and the serious drinking classes alike.

Famous Martini Lovers From the turn of the 20th Century the likes of Roosevelt, Churchill, Bogart, Sexton, Chandler, WC Fields, Sinatra, Dorothy Parker, Hemingway, Hitchcock, Bette Davis, Bond, Gable, Wilde, the Mad Men and Women of Madison Avenue and more…all swore by the powers of a well-made Martini. The writer and satirist H. L. Mencken called it “the only American invention as perfect as the sonnet."

ISLE OF HARRIS GIN TASTING NOTES Nose A well-defined juniper note with pine needles, immediately followed by the fresh citrus notes of bitter orange, lime and grapefruit. Develops a complex floral note of rose and wallflowers with crushed green herbs, coriander and gooseberry all underpinned by mixed spice. Sugar kelp adds to the complexity and richness with a dry maritime note.

Palate Refreshing, with good balance between the bitter juniper and pine and the sweet fruit flavours of mango, grapefruit and orange. A green herb flavour develops with crushed coriander. Distinctive and smooth with a dry, flinty taste.

Finish Overall a long, clean finish. As the juniper and citrus peel notes fade away, sweet vanilla and black pepper remain with a gentle reminder of the sea.

As Dorothy Parker was once (erroneously) quoted as saying, “I like to have a Martini, two at the very most, after three I'm under the table, after four I'm under my host."

B e O ur G u e st Hands up if you have a wedding coming up? In my experience and through many of my Personal Shopping Appointments - I think I can safely say it’s something that gets a lot of us stressed (including myself at times). You could be having a day where internally you don’t feel right and that perfect outfit is - well no longer perfect anymore. So I tend to look and gather outfits in advance or rather ‘don’t look‘. Confused? Well how many times have you seen something when you’re not

looking? Perhaps it’s before payday, then you hit the shops for something specific and then nothing, nada, ZERO catches your eye ? What changed? We’ve put pressure on ourselves, we HAVE to find something NOW (as you cry in frustration) and the sheer joy of shopping goes right out the window. So as easy as it sounds, try not to look and trust in yourself that you will find it. Or... you could always book a Personal Stylist (I wonder where you can find one of those?)

B elow are some pointers when think ing about your outfit. But fi rst of all breathe and remember that it ’s more impor tant you FEEL r ight rather than dress how you THINK you should.

Start with the shoes. How often have you found THE dress to then search everywhere for shoes to match, ending up with ‘ok’ ones just because they are the right colour? If your shoes are a statement then very often a simple dress is all you need.

Consider a jumpsuit or trouser suit. Adding an elegant, tailored edge to the day (not mention pockets to hold your tissues – weddings can be emotional!)

If fascinators are not your thing how about stacking up flower clips in your hair. Or try out the hottest trend in hair accessories, a bejewelled headband – I have amassed a few now. They look super stylish and look like you’ve made soooo much effort with your hair!

The Adru Martini By Tom Jolly of The American Bar, Gleneagles Hotel, Auchterarder "I like my Martinis really clean and crisp so what's at the forefront is simply the elegance of the spirit."

INGREDIENTS: 50ml Isle of Harris Gin 25ml Lillet Blanc 1.5ml Sugar Syrup 2 dashes of Orange Bitters 1 dash of Vanilla Saline Lemon peel

ME THODOLOGY: 1. Make the vanilla saline by adding 40g of sea salt to 100ml of water and 3 split vanilla pods then leave to infuse for 24 hours. 2. Add all ingredients, except for the lemon, to a chilled mixing glass. 3. Add a large block of ice and stir until liquid is chilled and suitably diluted. 4. Strain into a frozen coupe glass. 5. Squeeze oils from lemon over the drink and rub stem with remaining peel. 6. Drop peel into drink as a garnish.

Tom Jolly is the beverage manager at the world-famous Gleneagles Hotel. First opened in 1924, this magnificent countryside estate in the heart of Perthshire continues to offer five-star luxury and boasts the only restaurant in Scotland to hold two Michelin stars. Among the hotel's superb food and drink offerings lies The American Bar, an elegant bar with exceptional service and cocktails inspired by the roaring '20s. "I like my Martinis to be really clean and crisp, so that what stands at the forefront is simply the elegance of the spirit. This is a twist on Robert Vermeire’s Martini recipe from his 1922 book ‘Cocktails: How To Mix Them’, with the addition of a little vanilla salt to add a hint of savoury taste. This complements the seaweed and stone fruit flavours that the Lillet Blanc brings out in the Isle of Harris Gin, leaving a moreish Martini that really sings. The Isle of Harris Gin has such a strong, distinct and loveable taste that I didn’t feel it needed a huge amount of playing with – just the right ratio with the vermouth and a few subtle modifiers, leaving the spirit to be the star of a most quaffable drink."

Carers Week 10-17 June Not being able to talk to friends about caring leaves 1 in 3 carers (32%) socially isolated (The world shrinks: Carer loneliness research report by Carers UK as part of the Jo Cox Loneliness Commission, 2017). A further 32% say they feel socially isolated at work because of their caring responsibilities (IBID). Despite the huge contribution of unpaid carers to society, an overwhelming majority (74%) (research report for Carers Week 2016) feel their caring role isn't understood or valued by their community. An unwillingness to talk about caring has for many carers created a barrier to their inclusion at work, home and in public life. For lots of people, looking after a loved one is 'just something you do' meaning many do not recognise their caring role straight away. Nine in 10 carers (91%) (research report for Carers Week 2016) VD\ WKH\ KDYH PLVVHG RXW RQ ijQDQFLDO or practical support – or both – because they didn't identify themselves as a carer. Three quarters (78%) reported suffering from stress and anxiety as a result of missing out on support. Carers Week 2019 is about Getting carers connected to important support services, advice and information, and family and friends. Everyone has a part to play in connecting carers and helping them to get the support they need to care without putting off their own health needs or losing important relationships with others. This could include an employer creating carer-friendly policies by listening to the experiences of their workforce, a GP practice offering an annual health check or alternative appointment times to carers struggling to attend due to their caring responsibilities or a leisure centre offering special deals for carers.

Connected to friends and family Lack of time, and understanding from others, can cause loneliness and isolation DPRQJVW FDUHUV 7KH GLIijFXOW\ RI WDNLQJ time away from our caring role also adds to these feelings. Greater understanding from friends, colleagues, and the public, as well as more opportunities for breaks and social activities are all needed to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation. Connected to others, including carers Sometimes a few words from someone who understands your situation can be D OLIHOLQH %HLQJ D FDUHU FDQ EH GLIijFXOW and isolating, so speaking to someone who knows what you are going through can make a big difference. Carers Week is an opportunity for you to get connected to others, including fellow carers, in your community and build new friendships. Here in Moray, Quarriers Carer Support Service is hosting an event on Thursday 13 June at Elgin Town Hall, where carers from all over Moray can come together WR FDWFK XS ZLWK ROG IULHQGV DQG ijQG others not met yet, while sharing information and enjoying activities with like-minded people. To book your place, email moraycarers@quarriers.org.uk, or phone 01343 556031 Connected to services The Carers Service can help you complete an Adult Carer Support Plan, identifying the services and support you need to manage your caring role. Access to regular breaks is vital, so our Creative Breaks programme offers the opportunity for funding to do something you enjoy, while taking valuable time to yourself, to recharge your batteries and refresh your mind and body. This Carers Week, get connected. Start by getting in touch – we look forward to meeting you.

THE HAUGH RESTAURANT & LOUNGE

The Haugh, Elgin, Moray IV30 1AW ~ Please find us on

Good news on the restaurant scene for Elgin! A new restaurant has recently opened called The Haugh Restaurant & Lounge.

We thought we would try out this new restaurant, as we had already heard several good things being said about it. On entering the restaurant one of the first things we noticed was the tasteful décor, creating a relaxing and welcoming ambiance. We were shown to our table beside the window and given the menus. It was a Thursday night and we were told that Thursdays are Steak Nights, offering a set price for two people including a bottle of wine or soft drinks. (Good value for money!) For starters I had the Creamy Mushrooms on Toasted Sourdough with a Crispy Poached Egg, this was an excellent combination, bursting with flavour and when I cut into the egg, the yolk poured out just as it's meant to. My partner had the Ham 'Haugh' Pickled Vegetable Presse, with a Sharp Caper & Shallot Dressing. Both dishes were a perfect way to start the meal. Moving onto the mains I went for the Fillet Steak (Medium) which was cooked to perfection - neither

under or over cooked. The Fillet Steak was a really good size and served with hand-cut chips, side salad, and a peppercorn sauce. My partner went for the Blade of Beef (in his own words, “Out of this world!”) accompanied by a parcel of vegetables, mushrooms and mashed potatoes. He said it was one of the best slow cooked meats he has ever tasted and will certainly be ordering it again in the future. Finally the desserts. I chose the Stewed Apple and Bramble Brown Sugar Crumble. What can I say? It was heavenly and just the way a crumble should taste, whilst my partner plumped for the White Chocolate Strawberry Meringue. Both a delicious end to our meal. Offering us coffee, the waitress asked if we would like to have it in the lounge area, which is absolutely stunning and the perfect place to sit, relax and have a drink.

The Haugh Restaurant feels like a touch of luxury with its period features and tasteful décor, even the seating has been well thought out to make your whole experience a comfortable one, meaning you can sit down, have your meal and just relax. The service from the staff was excellent. They are friendly and always helpful. The lounge is a great room to go after your meal with its comfy chairs and sofas, open fire and even a grand piano. I would thoroughly recommend the The Haugh Restaurant and Lounge for a meal and I will be going back for steak night soon. I am also looking forward to going during the summer to enjoy the amazing outdoor seating area overlooking the River Lossie.

growth begins in the garden (this actually only lasts 6-8 weeks) it is all we can do to keep on top of things. Manage your own expectations during this period and don’t expect perfection – if you insist on getting the tap-root out of every dandelion that appears in your garden, another half a dozen will be growing behind your back while you’re doing it! Once mid-July and August roll around, plant growth is usually back to a sensible pace and we can keep on top of things more meticulously then, if we wish. Another important job to do at the moment is to get some fertilizer down, well-rotted horse manure is great, but equally a nitrogen-rich granular feed from the garden centre will suffice.

Last year I made a total of 13 such visits. This will be a ‘ringing’ visit and involve actually getting into the nest. Access is different in

each case from a walk-in job to a full abseil so I will take the appropriate equipment with me. If there is a chick (sometimes 2 and rarely 3) it should be about 4 weeks old so that I can ring it. I make a note of prey items in the nest and assess the health of the chick(s) as best I can (i.e. does it look like it will survive to fledging?). I bid

Prey items I have found in golden eagle nests include hen harrier, short-eared owl, cat, rat, hedgehog, buzzard chicks, ptarmigan, meadow pipit chicks and ptarmigan as well as the usual rabbit and red grouse. A nest I went to in 2012 had been adorned with a foxglove frond. Having made, I suppose, hundreds of nest visits I have seen this on a couple of occasions.

Fourth visit In July, if breeding has been successful, there should be a fledged juvenile in the area.

Where I can, I return to the area and look for signs of success. The nest will be white with ‘splash’ from the chick and with perseverance I should find a young bird not very far away. On 25 July 2015 I was keen to prove fledging at a nest near Tongue, in Sutherland. Armed with a possible nest grid reference and my telescope, I positioned myself on an Estate track north west of a vast range of inland cliffs reaching up some two hundred metres. I started the seemingly impossible task of finding a fledged chick which may or may not, conveniently, be visible somewhere in front of me. I changed position and tried again (and again). My eye kept being drawn to an extensive horizontal fissure in the rock face. I wondered if the nest might be there somewhere but I couldn’t see one. I scanned from side to side in the hope that I might see something.

At 12:05 a huge chick with distinctive juvenile white patches in its wings and tail flapped its wings and jumped up and down on the ledge! Having completed its pre-flight exercises and deciding not to launch itself, it retreated under the overhang behind it out of sight again. I was

delighted that my determination had paid off. I looked again and there was nothing to be seen of the nest or the chick. Had I dreamt it? Jon Brain
