We often hear the phrase “life is short�. It is indeed a strange phenomemon that time definitely seems to speed up the older we get. When I was a bit younger (ok - a lot younger!) I studied a few years of Latin and my old Latin teacher (Mr Cook) was a great advocate of the philosophy of ‘Seize the Day’ or ‘Carpe Diem’ in the original Latin. I’m not sure whether I have always been true to this through my life but it has ever been my aspiration. On the occasion where I have not ‘Carpe Diem’ it has often left me with a sense of regret and we do want to avoid regret don’t we!

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Walking is a big part of all our lives. For some it’s a pleasure: a way of escaping and getting out into the fresh air. For others it’s a chore: something you just have to do to get the day’s jobs done. And for others it’s maybe a missed part of who we were: age, infirmity or disability might mean that walking doesn’t figure in our day-today in the way it used to. The symbolism of walking, of going on a journey, is one that’s used by film makers, song writers and story tellers. There’s something about a journey that helps us get our head around things. Or see more clearly. Or just learn to live things the way they are. One of my favourite stories of Jesus returning to meet his friends after the resurrection is often called “The Road to Emmaus.” Two of them are walking, dejected and broken, away from Jerusalem. Their world has caved in. They might have heard the rumours of Jesus appearing again, but if so they can’t seem to bring themselves to believe it. And so, instead, they walk, and they walk, and they walk. As far away as they can go. As is so often the case on a long walk, they bump into someone. This someone is going the same way as

them and joins them for a bit. Talk quickly turns to all that’s been happening, and how they’re feeling. Slowly, but surely, this stranger talks into their grief and loss until, eventually, their eyes are opened and they realise who they’ve been talking to all along. “They came to the edge of the village where they were headed. He acted as if he were going on but they pressed him: ‘Stay and have supper with us. It’s nearly evening; the day is done.’ So he went in with them. And here is what happened: He sat down at the table with them. Taking the bread, he blessed and broke and gave it to them. At that moment, open-eyed, wideeyed, they recognized him. And then he disappeared.” Luke 24: 28-31 (The Message) Walking, for me, is good for my soul. It helps me to see past some of the things that hem me in. The rhythm of it helps to put things into perspective. And, sometimes, it helps me to get to that “ah ha!” moment that makes sense of things. In days of old, pilgrims knew that it was good to walk. And, recently, the idea of pilgrimage is being rediscovered as a way of reconnecting

with God and with each other. This summer, partly as a fund raiser for our local church refurbishment programme and for the Church of Scotland’s HIV Programme, I'm walking in the footsteps of St Moluag: that early bringer of good news to the Picts and the Scots. From Grantown to Dufftown and Rosemarkie, and down to the Cathedral of St Moluag on Lismore, this will be my own little pilgrimage. A time to give thanks for what I have, and look to where God is taking me. Walking is good for the soul and I hope we might all be able to take some time out to be a pilgrim in our own way this summer. Be it a walk round the block, or a mammoth stomp. We all need a bit of time out and time to find God in us and around us, just like those two did at Emmaus all those years ago.

Parliament Blog I was pleased to host a round table event in the library at Elgin recently where I invited members of the various community councils from across Moray. This allowed us to come together and share concerns and topical issues both here in Moray and at Westminster. It was good to hear their views and I was delighted that we were able to discuss a number of issues around the table. I’ve received some positive feedback on this engagement and I’m hopeful this will become a more frequent event. Summer is here, I’m looking forward to being back in Moray for the recess and meeting up with constituents from across the area during my forthcoming surgery tour. People can come along without an appointment and raise any issues or concerns with me. Watch out for adverts in the local press with details of specific times and venues. Finally, by the time this article is published, the leadership election of the Conservative Party will be nearing a conclusion. With Climate Change a much talked about and topical issue, it is important that we don’t just brush it off as an others news story or as scaremongering. There are many things we can do as individuals to help the environment, and climate change. For example, when I’m both in London and at home in Inverness, I often choose to cycle rather than drive long distances. Not only does this have personal benefits for my physical health, but it’s a great way to reduce fuel emissions. An added bonus is that we are lucky enough to have excellent initiatives, like the Velocity Café and Bike Shop in Inverness, so should you need any help with repairs or if you’re interested in getting involved with a cycling group, they are the people to see!

Some call it ‘Sports Luxe’ some ‘Athleisure’ - either way they make me feel I can walk that extra mile. ‘Athleisure’ (as described above) is an ever growing and

evolving trend and allows you to bridge the gap between smart/casual. One of my favourite looks is to wear a blazer, slogan tee, skinnies and my silver sequin trainers. I’ve even been known to wear track pants to a very important audition but because my hair was done, the blazer was structured AND I had my accessories on I still felt smart, polished and together. Not to mention no throbbing feet! In the end this is the key to true style - to feel like you and know you can walk in a room with an easy confidence.

My Top 5 Tips for Trainer Style... 1. Pick a pair that suit your feet. 2. Go for Sparkle or Glitter for weekend/lunch dates 3. Leather styles are generally better to keep feet fresh (or wear trainer socks)

4. Pick a colour that will work with all your wardrobe, or are neutral enough to tone in. 5. Pair with everything! From dresses to skirts, suits to jumpsuits, rest assured you can so rock this...
