While weather predictions carry with them some element of luck – one place we can guarantee the kids a romp around in the snow this month is Hunter Valley Gardens! We’re so excited to see the return of Snow Time in the Garden to the Hunter Valley this month. Every year since 2011 (excluding 2020), Hunter Valley Gardens has created the coolest family event, bringing the snow to our region and all the fun activities associated with this freezing, powdery delight. Another reason to be excited about this year’s event is the brand-new snowmaking machine that has just been installed, ready to pump out finer, more realistic snow in greater amounts than ever before. It’s snow that’s as good as the real thing, and there’ll be heaps of it. Read more on page 12. Historically, June is also the month to celebrate wine and food in the Hunter Valley, and this year's festival has returned to our vineyards. The festival is already in full swing, and there’s a vast array of activities and events to revel in throughout Wine Country.

SPECIAL OFFERS AVAILABLE From 16th June 2021 until the 15th July 2021 inclusive, or while stocks last.

We’ve featured a selection of our favourite activities in this month’s issue. If a fabulous charcuterie, duck salami, lovely creamy blue cheeses, a genuinely authentic gelato or delicious olives are your (fig) jam, then do we have the spot for you! The Smelly Cheese Shop has been a must-visit for travellers to the Hunter Valley for many more years than most of us can remember, and this month we caught up with Tony and Steven to discuss all things gourmet produce. Read more on page 23. If you’re ready to be wowed by a visual smorgasbord – then a trip to Morpeth Gallery most certainly should be on your to-do list. With more than 600 paintings on display, marvel at the incredible creations of some of Australias very best landscape and wildlife artists. Winter is not the time to hibernate! It’s the time to get out and enjoy the warmth of hospitality, cosy restaurants and wines set to warm you from the inside out that you’ll find around every corner of Hunter Valley Wine Country.

Enjoy!

SNOW TIME W

inter has come! And for families all across the Hunter, this means just one thing - it’s Snow Time in the Garden. Every year since 2011 (excluding 2020), Hunter Valley Gardens has created the coolest family event, bringing the snow to our region and the fun activities associated with this freezing, powdery delight. There’s no need to travel all the way to the NSW snowfields when Snow Time in the Garden is available on our doorstep, and nothing could be more beautiful than playing in the snow on one of our Wintery sunny days with the children in your life.

yhv 12 | JUNE–JULY 2021

WORDS LIANE MORRIS This year’s event is all the more exciting because the 2020 event was cancelled due to the pandemic. Hitting right smack in the middle of prime planning time, COVID directly impacted the event, with all the preparation work coming to a grinding halt. Even when the lockdown was over, Government restrictions around crowd numbers meant that the event was no longer viable, and six months of planning went to waste. If the 2020 event had not been cancelled, this year would have marked the 10th anniversary of Snow Time at the Garden. This milestone will now be celebrated next year instead. Another reason to be excited about this year’s event is the brand-new snowmaking machine that has just been erected, ready to pump out finer, more realistic snow in greater amounts than ever before. In the past, the snow was made by shaving ice for the Snow Play Zone, but now the snow will be as good as the real thing, and there’ll be heaps of it. The event runs from Saturday 19 June until Sunday 18 July and is a wonderful way to use your Dine and Discover vouchers which are

who will be sitting in the Snow Play Zone. It’s advisable to bring along an extra set of clothing and a towel. In addition to Snow Time activities, there will be roaming entertainment, and the Hunter Valley Gardens popular amusement rides will also be open and guaranteed to excite the kids – young and old. These include: FERRIS WHEEL This beautiful 25 metre Ferris Wheel provides spectacular views of the surrounding Gardens, wineries, mountains and countryside, something the whole family can enjoy on a sunny Winter’s day. Children below 120cm must ride with an adult. SWING CHAIR The speedy Swing Chair will spin you around 11 metres off the ground. Feel the wind in your hair and revel in the carnival atmosphere. The Swing Chair will get your heart racing and is a favourite with the older kids. Please note: Children between 110cm–120cm must ride with an adult; 120cm and above may ride alone.

valid until 31st July 2021. They can’t be redeemed for online purchases – only tickets purchased at the Garden entry gates on the day of use. Discover vouchers can also be used to purchase ride tokens or unlimited wristbands. You can also use your Dine vouchers at the Garden Terrace but not at the food marquees. Hunter Valley Gardens will be transformed into a magical ice adventure playground full of fun and frosty adventures for children of all ages. A perfect destination to celebrate Christmas in July with a snowy theme and frosty fun for all the family. Snow Time entry includes: ICE-SKATING RINK The famous Ice-Skating Rink has been extended this year so that skaters have lots of room to glide like a professional, with sessions lasting for 20 minutes and opening at 10am every day. The rink can hold more than 200 skaters at a time. Skating sessions can only be reserved on the day at the ticket booth outside the Ice-Skating marquee. If you don’t want to miss out, get there early and book in – get your skates on! Skating aids (Bobby Seals) will be available for hire for $5 each and ONLY for children six years and under. An adult must accompany children under five on the ice.

VENETIAN CAROUSEL This beautiful traditional Venetian Carousel was built in Italy to the design of the Hunter Valley Gardens staff. It’s a firm family favourite harking back to a bygone era and the perfect backdrop for photographs to create memories with. Please note: this ride is for children only. Children below 105cm must ride with an adult (adult must stand next to the child). TEA CUP The newest ride at the Gardens, the twisty, twirly Tea Cup, will have the kids spinning around in giant colourful tea cups and squealing with delight. Join the tea party! Please note: not suitable for children younger than two years and under 95cm. Children between 95cm-120cm must ride with an adult; 120cm and above may ride alone. Heights are checked at each individual ride, and access will be approved by the operator. Individual ride tokens are available for $6 each, or all-day wristbands can be purchased for $20 in the event area at the Gardens. All of this energetic and icy fun will have everyone in the family craving yummy hot foods, and drinks and Hunter Valley Gardens does not disappoint in this regard. The Garden Terrace Café will be open, as well as several food stalls providing a hearty range of delicious food and beverage options to choose from. Tasty treats such as loaded fries, hotdogs, sausage rolls, pies, toasties, wood fire pizza, stuffed spuds, Greek food, Mexican food, desserts and doughnuts are all on offer or visit one of the well-established dining establishments in the nearby (Continued next page) F

ICE TOBOGGAN A firm family favourite, the Ice Toboggan is super-fast, crazy fun and 45 metres long. Grab a tube and speed down the slide to get your adrenaline pumping. It’s guaranteed that one trip down the slide will not be enough! Children under four must be accompanied by an adult. SNOW PLAY ZONE Perfect for everyone in the family, this specially designed space has been created to provide a realistic snow experience that is ideal for people who have never seen snow before. Build a snowman, make a snow angel, or just play in the snow for some icy fun. SNOW CAVE Don’t miss the giant Snow Cave filled with animatronic Arctic animals such as polar bears and penguins. The little ones in your life will be absolutely delighted by this magical winter wonderland. It’s recommended to wear weatherproof/waterproof clothing, including gloves, jackets, pants and shoes, especially for smaller children

village such as the Cellar Restaurant, Oscars, Taste of the Country, éléments bar & dining or Gigi & Chix Bonbon. If pub fare is more your style, pop on over to Harrigans Bistro. Same day re-entry to Snow Time is allowed, so keep your tickets to show on re-entry. Hunter Valley Gardens Event Manager Charise Foulstone is expecting unprecedented numbers this year. “A lot of families return to this event every year. One of our most popular options is the annual family passes that are available for $259 for a family of four. This enables families to visit year-round and enjoy all our major events, including the Christmas Lights Spectacular,” said Charise. “The Mega Creatures event that we’ve just finished enjoyed record numbers, so we’re expecting Snow Time to be bigger than ever this year.” In addition to Snow Time, amusement rides and delicious food options, there are also 14 hectares of gardens with ten individually themed gardens to explore as well as bespoke shops offering everything from collectables, jewellery, glassware, clothing, deli and gourmet foods to crystals and Christmas decorations. There really is something for every member of the family or group. It’s a fun day out with all the benefits and enjoyable moments that a trip to the snowfields would bring without the expense and travel time. The next time the kids are complaining they’re bored, take them to Snow Time in the Garden – it’s a fun-filled frosty adventure they won’t be able to resist and could just be the start of a new family tradition just like the Christmas Lights Spectacular is for so many Hunter families.

Event Dates: Saturday 19th June – Sunday 18th July 2021 Ticket Information: Adult (16yrs +) – $34 Child (4–15yrs) – $25 Family Passes from $85 (2 adults + 1 child) Opening Hours: Garden entry open from 9am–5pm. Snow Time activities run from 9:30am–6pm. Ride Costs: Tokens for individual rides are $6 each, unlimited ride* wristbands are $20 per person. Getting There: By Road: An easy 2-hour drive North of Sydney via the M1, turning off at the Cessnock/Vineyards Exit, following the signs through to Cessnock and then on to Pokolbin. It’s less than an hour’s drive from Newcastle. By Air: Newcastle Airport is a 50-minute drive from the Gardens. MEET THE MAKER

O’Neills Mobile Coffee Group Who doesn’t love wandering around an amazing local market (like Handmade in the Hunter Markets), browsing fabulous creations with a deliciously warm coffee in your hands on a Winters day? This month we caught up with the crew at O’Neills Mobile Coffee Group (OMCG) to find out what sets their coffee (and everything else) apart from the rest. Let’s start with the coffee…. Coffee is not as simple as many think. We’re passionate coffee lovers ourselves – so we follow a recipe every time we make a coffee. This way, we know we are getting a consistent, full-bodied flavour every time. We want to provide the best service, with a smile, of course, to our amazing community. Not to mention, our beans are ethically sourced from South America but roasted locally by the best in the business, Glitch Coffee Roasters. What other beverages and food do you serve up at Handmade in the Hunter Markets? The variety of delicious food and drink we serve up even surprises us sometimes! We started out as a plain old coffee truck, but now we do everything from our Signature Cake Range, including Nanna Liz’s carrot cake – a family recipe that has lasted through generations and banana bread, we struggle to keep up with the demand! We’ve also got soft tacos and nachos, loaded fries and gourmet breakfast menus on the food front… and that is to name a few! As for drinks, we always like to innovate in that area; we have our Iced Drink Range, including our famous iced crusha, slushies, smoothies and milkshakes,

and so much more! We love to constantly challenge ourselves, bringing new and exciting treats and drinks to our customers – all to put a smile on their face! Tell us about your (really cool) OMCG personalised keep cups? Our OMCG Personalised Keep-Cups are another one of the many projects that we are super proud of! Just another way for our mobile café to provide even more to our locals! They’re a fantastic gift idea for a coffeeobsessed partner or friend, or maybe even a co-worker or employee who needs their morning coffee pick me up to get the job done. With their name and their personalised order on the keep-cup, it makes it easy for those early morning orders when you don’t feel like talking before your morning coffee! We recently catered for a wedding and gifted the bride and groom their own personalised keep-cups for that personal touch on their special day. We love doing little projects like this to keep building our community and our identity as people’s favourite small business. We are even working on OMCG Supporter T-Shirts and many other exciting projects coming up! What do you like most about the Handmade in the Hunter Markets? How do you work with event organisers to encourage attendees? We find Handmade in the Hunter like going to a family reunion. All local, small business owners that pour their heart and soul into everything they do, and of course we all love to support one another wherever we can – it is where we source a lot of our products for our food menus; home-made jams and spreads from Casbars Kitchen, Hot Chilli Woman with her beautiful chilli sauces, our local honey makers, Largs Honey & Beelish. We even source some of our coffee equipment like our signature tamps from Jan and Anna at Beenatree Creations. When lunchtime hits, Jean from The Crafty Pit is always on hand to take everyone’s orders and whip up a delicious lunch for everyone! You’ll find Handmade in the Hunter Markets in the gardens of Sobels Wines in Pokolbin – 19 and 26 June, followed by markets on 3 and 4, 10 and 17 July.

SMALL MOUTH!

Something is sparkling in Wine Country – and it’s not wine! Small Mouth is a small family-run distillery that specialises in handcrafted, quality spirits, including shimmering vodkas and gins. And you can taste them all at their new tasting room at Hunter Valley Gardens Shopping Village. Small Mouth Vodka has been online for years, but since the tasting room in Pokolbin was opened early in 2019, the team has been working hard to expand the range available both for tasting and purchase. “Since the tasting rooms opened, we have grown our range and now have a whole fleet of gins, vodkas and liqueurs to offer customers,” said co-Manager Jaydan Addis. Small Mouth is made up of an enthusiastic team of family members, including Paul Addis, the co-owner and head distiller, who has been distilling for eight years. Melloney Addis, Kaitlyn Addis and co-Managers Jaydan Addis and Mia Thompson all work in-store conducting tastings and sales. Mia and Jaydan also work on the online side of the business as well. “Small Mouth is a hand-crafted, premium spirit that is organic and vegan friendly. Our produce is distilled in traditional copper pot stills and uses freshly captured rainwater. We add edible glitter to our products so you can shimmer on the inside just like you do on the outside!” says Jaydan.

Since the tasting room opened, the team has been surprised by the range of customers that walk through the doors – everyone from fresh-faced 18 year-olds to 92-year-old connoisseurs! “For us, this is evidence that we are on the right track. We aim to create a premium and innovative product that can be used to make even simple cocktails unique and delicious. We’re dedicated to providing a product that excites all ages,” said Jaydan. Small Mouth offers gins, vodkas, and liqueur’s, ranging from 45%, 40%, and 20%. All products have a shimmering glitter in them that are food-grade safe so that when you add any mixer with bubbles, the glitter will continuously move in your drink. Top sellers include the Shimmering Chocolate Hazelnut Vodka and Espresso Liqueur, perfect for cold Winter nights. Both drinks are delicious ‘on the rocks’ or with your favourite mixer. For more information, visit www.smallmouthvodka.com or drop in for a taste at Hunter Valley Gardens Shopping Village on Broke Road in Pokolbin.

L to R: Tony, Katherine and Steven

LIFE IS A BANQUET At THE SMELLY CHEESE SHOP! WORDS LIANE MORRIS

Tony Drice is a Hunter Valley success story. With his business partner of 30 years, Steven Cooper, the two run The Smelly Cheese Shop and the Hunter Valley Gelato Company, as well as the distribution arms and the Smelly's Own label of cheeses and gourmet deli produce. Tony grew up in the Hunter region with his parents running several hotels in Hinton and Maitland. A trained chef, Tony joined Regent International Hotels and became Head Butler, training fine dining staff and butlers in Sydney before a stint at the Twin Waters Resort on the Sunshine Coast as Food & Beverage Manager. Steven, meanwhile, grew up in Balmain and the south coast, working as a colour consultant for Bristol Paints and in sales for Classic Ceramics before joining Tony at the Twin Waters Resort, where Tony introduced him to the 5-star hospitality trade. Both were passionate foodies, and in 1990 they decided to open their own restaurant in Maitland called Mad Hatters. The two went on to open Café Caffé in 1995, moving back to the Hunter Valley permanently. Within a few years, they had founded the Cheers Bus service because they could see the business opportunity. They built this business up to running six buses before selling it to concentrate on their food business. In 2004 they closed Café Caffé and opened the Smelly Cheese Shop at Pokolbin Village, selling artisan cheeses, cured meat and accompaniments as well as hampers and cheese platters. It was the first Fromagerie in the Hunter. The two had been frustrated at the lack of gourmet deli foods in the Hunter Valley particularly, good cheeses. "We would run back to Sydney regularly to trawl through the Leichhardt delis or hit the David Jones Food Hall," said Tony. "We could see there was an opportunity to build a gourmet food business because the only options we had locally were the supermarkets, and they just weren't good enough." The business expanded quickly, and very soon, they were also manufacturing gelato using ingredients and equipment sourced from Italy with a 200-year-old recipe. According to Tony, the Italian community from far and wide would come on buses and queue for their gelato

because it was so authentic. "If you're going to do something, do it well," said Tony. The Hunter Valley Gelato Company was born and flourished. Having worked in the 5-star hospitality trade, they knew there would be a market for their products in local restaurants and hotels, so they set up the distribution arms of their two businesses. The distribution business enables the local establishments to buy artisan gourmet products at a reasonable price point at quantities they can manage. To buy direct from the suppliers is prohibitive unless the quantities are of a larger scale. The distribution business can purchase products in higher quantities and distribute them to many local businesses, including their own Smelly Cheese Shop and Hunter Valley Gelato Company. But they didn't stop there. The next step was creating their own brand of gourmet deli products called Smelly's Own. All products are produced locally under licence with the top-selling product, at the time of writing, being Smelly's Own Cow Fetta with Sun-Dried Tomato, closely followed by Smelly's Own Pesto Cow Fetta and the Cheese Platters and Ploughman's Hamper. They are proud to be supporting local produce and local artisans. With a talent for keeping on-trend, the two developed Goat's Milk and Vegan gelato as well as expanding the range of vegan products for the Smelly's Own brand. Covid has slowed things down somewhat, but with the retail side of their business, they have been able to keep their doors open and are looking forward to the future. "It’s never boring,” said Tony. “There are always new products to try, trends to keep abreast of. It’s quite dynamic. My favourite products are our lovely creamy blue cheeses and delicious olives. We have a fabulous charcuterie. We even have duck salamis. Twenty to thirty years ago, you would never have been able to get that.” Tony ends the interview with words he lives by – uttered by Rosalind Russell in the film Aunty Mame:

“Life's a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death! So c'mon, live!” 23 | JUNE–JULY 2021 yhv
