Savannah Estate Weaving a Story of Resilience and Heritage with New Cellar Door

Savannah Estate needs no introduction to lovers of good wine. Established by the legendary Peterson family in the early 2000's in Mount View and now run by its namesake, Savannah Peterson, the winery has gained an enviable reputation and is now extending to a second cellar door on the ‘Golden Mile’ of Broke Road, Pokolbin.

The Petersons have been growing vines in the Mount View area where the original Savannah Estate cellar door is located since 1964 when Ian and Shirley Peterson purchased an old dairy property and planted the first ten acres of Semillon. Fast-forward to the early 2000's and Colin Peterson (Ian and Shirley’s son) established Savannah Estate with a view to creating a boutique winery where he could experiment with different varietals. Savannah Estate is set in an idyllic location and was lovingly named after his daughter Savannah.

In 2015, Savannah, a promising third-generation winemaker, began working in the winery, experimenting with Tempranillo, Chambourcin, Vermentino, Durif and others, quickly garnering a reputation as a promising winemaker working alongside Gary Reed. At the start of 2020, Savannah returned from her overseas trip to Ireland and this ignited her love for the Hunter Valley all over again.

“2020 was a real game changer for us,” said Savannah.

“It was during lockdown that we started doing virtual tastings, and if anything, we were busier than we’d ever been. When things

reopened, people wanted to visit the cellar door, and it was normal for us to have 250 people over the weekends. We’ve never worked harder, and it was a labour of love.”

By 2023, Savannah had moved to the Hunter Valley to work full time on the family business, taking the opportunity to learn from her father and continue the family legacy. She extended her management across the Peterson family portfolio of wineries and restaurants as her father had begun to wind back his involvement to a less frenetic pace. Savannah Estate's success has been a testament to the family's dedication and love for winemaking, justifying the opening of a second venue in what is a prime location on Broke Road in Pokolbin.

One of Savannah’s core values is the relationship she nurtures between her staff and customers, the welcoming connections that foster a sense of family. In January 2021, one of Savannah’s friends, Kurt Nilon, joined her in the business, working initially as Cellar Door Manager for three years before taking on the role of Sales and Marketing across the Peterson Group.

“We’re still best friends,” said Kurt.

“We’ve always said that if working together impacted our relationship, we wouldn’t work together anymore, but it never has. Everyone who works here is like family, and I truly believe that this is the secret behind our success at not just Savannah Estate but across all the Peterson properties. We look after each other, and that extends to the whole team.”

Aaron Cootes, the Cellar Door Manager across both venues, came to his role after working at Baumé as a waiter. Savannah heard he was looking for work in a warehouse and reached out.

“He was just the nicest person you could ever wish to meet,” said Savannah.

“And I knew he’d be the perfect fit for our cellar doors. The tasting experience is our priority, and we pride ourselves on a relaxed atmosphere with good people and excellent quality wine, where our customers leave as friends at the end of the day.

“When we announced that we were opening a new cellar door, we had so many of our regulars concerned that we might close down the Mount View location, but that’s not happening. The Mount View cellar door is close to my heart. It’s where I made my name, and it’s a place that means a lot to many of our loyal customers and wine club members. We’ve made sure to preserve the intimate charm and character that has endeared us to our patrons over the years, and that rustic design style has inspired elements of the new Savannah Estate Broke Road Cellar Door.”

The vision for a second cellar door has been on the cards for several years. The land on which it now sits is adjacent to Hunter Valley's esteemed Lisa McGuigan’s VAMP, Pokolbin Distillery, and Blaxland’s Inn, where there’s been a concrete slab sitting waiting for the right moment to be transformed.

“Dad and I had been discussing and finalising the new Cellar Door for 6 long years,” said Savannah.

“So, it’s been in the planning stages for a while, waiting for builders and supplies to become available. Sometimes we’d take some wine down to the slab, sit, and envision the future cellar door.”

Built by Peter Southwell, who also built the Chapel at Peterson House, the new cellar door reflects Savannah's commitment to sustainability and reverence for history, which she inherited from her father, Colin.

“The vision for the new Cellar Door was always a warm, comfortable and welcoming space,” said Savannah.

“We love the rustic warmth of all of our Peterson properties, so we’ve been sure to replicate that here by using big, exposed hardwood beams, polished concrete floors and historical bricks that Dad had saved. He’s always saving history!"

“The bricks are handmade convict bricks from the Kaluda Estate in Lochinvar that Dad had saved waiting for the right project! Now they will have a new life as part of our architectural narrative, weaving a story of resilience and heritage.”

“And we’ve made sure we’ve bought some of the old Savannah Estate cellar door with us too,” Kurt added.

“We built the bar ourselves from an old Ironbark tree out the back of the Mount View property. It was dying, and rather than see it wasted, we cut it ourselves, sanded it, and polished it, and it looks amazing. It’s got a whole new life. We’ve made sure that wherever possible, we use recycled materials; even our furniture was donated by locals. It gives the space a lot of character, a warmth, and eclectic charm.”

Cellar Door Manager Aaron Cootes will be sharing his art background with a unique installation for the cellar door.

“Aaron was the friend and General Manager of the local artist Greg Wilson OAM, who sadly passed away four years ago,” said Savannah.

“He’s worked on putting together an installation of his award-winning art, which we’re excited to hang in the next month. It speaks to our values of family, history, and connection.”

Visitors to the new cellar door can expect to choose from a delectable wine selection. New vintages to look out for include the 2023 Marsanne, the 2023 Viognier, and a White Blend of 2023 Arnies, Vermentino, and Viognier. There’s also Sparkling Rosé, Shiraz, Tempranillo and Chambourcin. Savannah is still involved in the winemaking process but not as directly as she was previously, choosing to concentrate on management however still working closely with Chief winemaker Gary Reed.

With over 30 varietals to choose from grown in the Hunter, Mudgee and Armidale, the next vintage is looking promising. Savannah Estate proudly chooses to make approachable wines that can be enjoyed with good music, delicious food, and great company. There will be a selection of wines that will be exclusive to the Savannah Estate Broke Road Cellar Door and plans for later openings so that visitors can enjoy a long, relaxed afternoon on the verandah. There are also plans for collaborations with the neighbours, especially Pokolbin Distillery.

The first event at the new Savannah Estate Cellar Door will be held on Saturday, 25 May. It is the first Savannah Estate Broke Road 'Restaurant take-over' from local Brazillian BBQ company Pampa Flame. Canapes and sparkling wine will be served upon arrival, followed by a sit-down threecourse dinner with Savannah Estate wines available from the bar. Morpeth's Animal Archibalds Bring Wildlife to Life

Morpeth Gallery’s annual Feathers & Fur Wildlife Art Exhibition has become one of the most noteworthy events in the art calendar, often referred to as the ‘Oscars of international wildlife art.’ But here in the Hunter, we like to refer to the annual Wildlife Art show of the year as the ‘Animal Archibalds!’

Each year, this exhibition showcases a stunning selection of shortlisted artworks commended by an expert judging panel, which portray a variety of techniques and mediums.

The subjects may not be famous; however, many of the artists have won multiple awards on the international scene and will be in residence, painting at their easels across the June long weekend (8 to 10 June). Entry is free, and the exhibition will be open daily between 10am and 5pm. This year you can catch Garry Fleming, Natalie Jane Parker, Robyn Collier, Pippa Chapman, James Hough, Stephen Jesic, Maegan Oberhardt, Peter Marsack and Florence Humphreys at their easels.

Each artist will have new paintings and exclusive merchandise available. The Hunter Valley Finch Club will also be showing its fantastic collection of finches during the exhibition, with artists working alongside the finch breeders so that visitors can appreciate the pintsized birds on canvas and in person.

“Live finches are normally very difficult to see in the wild. They are small birds and fly very fast, travelling up to 14 kilometres to their feeding grounds. And when you only weigh 10 grams, you are tiny and difficult to spot,” says Gallery owner Trevor Richards.

“However, at Morpeth Gallery over the June long weekend, you can see these beautiful birds in person and in paintings.”

Playing an integral role in helping to increase awareness of endangered species, the Feathers & Fur Exhibition also utilises the power of art to celebrate wildlife, support awareness and raise funds for endangered species across Australia.

“It seems fitting that we take a step back and reflect on the sheer beauty and diversity of our natural world and what could be lost if we do not truly appreciate the value of the world around us,” says Trevor.

Amongst the artists in residence will be Australia’s finest wildlife artist, James Hough. James is the official artist for Australian Geographic and has also been awarded two gold medals for the best wildlife painting in the world. James says his close interaction while painting many endangered species has helped further open his eyes to the importance of the conservation effort needed for the future.

Also exhibiting is Stephen Jesic, who has won the best wildlife painting in the world five out of the last eight years, and Natalie Jane Parker, whose artworks appear on plates, mugs, trays, tea towels, and jigsaw puzzles sold around the world.

HUNGERFORD HILL Pushing Boundaries. Honouring Tradition.

The history of Hungerford Hill is a tapestry of tradition and innovation. Today, this iconic estate is home to Muse, the Hunter Valley's only two-hatted restaurant, and a range of wines that embody the tradition of winemaking innovation. Led by Chief Winemaker Bryan Currie, Hungerford Hill wines offer a quality experience that seamlessly blends a rich heritage with a cutting-edge approach to winemaking, sparking curiosity and delight in every sip.

Originally a Hungerford family cattle farm that spread to the current site of Hunter Valley Gardens and Cypress Lakes Resort, the property was established as a vineyard by accountant and entrepreneur John Parker in 1967. The Australian wine industry was experiencing a renaissance at the time, with growing interest in table wines as an accompaniment to food, replacing the previous popularity of sherry and port. Parker opened a cellar door in 1970 and developed one of the first wine tourism complexes a couple of years later. However, by 1985, Parker lost control in a hostile takeover, and the winery was purchased by Southcorp, who also acquired vineyards in Tumbarumba and Hilltops.

Despite this change in ownership, the Hungerford Hill brand languished until John Kirby purchased the property in 2002. Under Kirby, the label flourished, and the iconic cellar door at One Broke Road was built, designed by architect Walter Barda to resemble a wine barrel. This period saw the brand develop a reputation for premium quality wines. Then, in 2016, Kirby sold to Sam Arnaout of Iris Capital, the current owner, who also acquired Sweetwater vineyard, Wyndham Estate, and the Dalwood brand – one of Australia's oldest surviving vineyards, established by George Wyndham in 1828.

When Arnaout took over, he employed Bryan Currie as Winemaker. Currie, a seasoned winemaker with a wealth of experience from his time at Westend Estate and McWilliams, was attracted to the role because of the fruit from Tumbarumba and the opportunity to work with multiple climates across NSW. His expertise and passion for winemaking have been instrumental in the continued success of Hungerford Hill, and he continues to push the boundaries of winemaking with his innovative approach.

"I'd been working with fruit from this region all my career, and I wanted to continue to do that," said Bryan.

"At the same time, I loved the idea that Hungerford Hill had fruit available from several different climates, enabling us to create a full range of wines."

Each vineyard provides a unique climate and soil that affects the wines produced. Dalwood Estate's sandy soil produces lighter, fragrant Shiraz. Sweetwater Estate's red clay over limestone produces richer, fuller-bodied wines. Hungerford Hill's dark clay soil creates denser wines. Hilltops is a cool climate for Sangiovese, Tempranillo, and Malbec. Tumbarumba's cold climate suits Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

"We're having fun creating Spanish-style wine using early-ripening Tempranillo and late-ripening Graciano from Hilltops," said Bryan.

"We're proud to offer a wine for every palate and every occasion with wines from multiple regions – the full NSW experience."

In 2020, Currie began experimenting with vegan-friendly and preservative-free wines to increase accessibility. The vegan wines use plant proteins like pea or potato starch instead of traditional animalbased fining agents without affecting taste. The preservative-free wines take on a more savoury, textural taste profile.

With a rich history deeply rooted in winemaking in NSW, Hungerford Hill continues to push boundaries while honouring its legacy.

"I'm keen to push the envelope and experiment with blends," said Bryan.

"The Hunter Valley's variability in seasonal climate makes our wines stand out, and the trick is to be relaxed and not too stressed about it. Some of the greatest wines are often blends, so I'm excited to explore that.

“Plus, we've got impressive changes coming to upgrade the Hungerford Hill site to be closer to architect Walter Barda's original grand vision.”

Muse Restaurant, located within the Hungerford Hill complex, is the only two-hatted restaurant in the Hunter Valley. It serves contemporary Australian cuisine with a focus on local produce. The cuisine complements the wine, and the restaurant works closely with the winery to produce sought-after events.

One of the most popular offerings is the Epic Tasting Experience, which costs $60pp and includes a mini-degustation of Hungerford Hill wines matched with bite-sized dishes from Muse.

With a rich history, innovative winemaking, and a focus on exceptional food and wine experiences, Hungerford Hill continues to push boundaries while honouring traditions.

Sensational Sparklings Make Life Bubblier at Peterson House!

Widely recognised as the gateway to the Hunter Valley, Peterson House is the only winery in the region dedicated to sparkling wine.

Located in prime position on the corner of Wine Country Drive and the popular Broke Road, this beautiful sandstone property is set amongst the vines and offers an impressive array of experiences for visitors. From the 30 different wines to choose from at the Cellar Door and the multiaward-winning Restaurant Cuvee to the wrap-around deck with stunning views and the purpose-built chapel for weddings, there’s no wonder that well over 150,000 people visit each year, and it seems that they all agree with the Peterson House tagline: “life’s flat without bubbles!”

Originally established by legendary vigneron Ian Peterson, who wanted to honour the birth of his granddaughter with a new sparkling wine, he discovered that no one in NSW was commercially producing sparkling wine in small volumes. He went about rectifying that in a big way.

Today, the range of sparkling wines is produced using two different methods—Charmat and Methode Traditionalle. The Charmat method

produces popular products like the Pink Blush Rose in a timely fashion. The Methode Traditionalle takes more time, with harvesting, crafting, and aging before the sparkling process even begins. The business is considered to be related to the Peterson Family group (as the Peterson family are still shareholders and on the board of directors) but operates separately as a public company.

Often the first stop for most visitors to the valley on their winery tours, the property is also home to Hunter Valley Chocolates and the breakfast of choice for the Balloon Aloft experiences. It’s so incredibly popular that it hosts, on average, 200 weddings per year and consistently wins the coveted Wedding Industry and Brides Choice awards for the venue, the chapel and the restaurant.

Weddings are a very large part of the business, with a new chapel built in 2019 and upgrades to the marquee taking place this year. Plans are afoot to build accommodation for wedding parties on the property sometime in the near future.

“We don’t open the restaurant for evenings because we keep that time and space for our weddings. Last November, we did 16 weddings straight—one every day for 16 days. The chapel is a beautiful venue, built of sandstone with massive architectural beams. Our marquee is being upgraded this year with glass doors and panels to make even more of the stunning vineyard views,” said Haylee.

Restaurant Cuvee operates seven days a week, serving breakfast and lunch to the general public. A destination in its own right, it provides the perfect foil for everything else that the property offers. It serves modern Australian cuisine with influences from around the globe, often determined by the staff's country of origin. The menu changes regularly and includes Italian, Thai, Philippine, Indian, and other Asian choices.

“Possibly one of our most well-known and popular offerings in the restaurant is our Bubbly Breakfast, which includes focaccia, poached eggs, spinach, candied beetroot, mushroom, tomatoes, hash brown, avocado and hummus, washed down with a glass of Pink Blush or Cuvee. Our Head Chef, Chad Pridue, works with his team to create the menus with a focus on fresh seasonal produce from as many local suppliers as possible - seafood from Port Stephens and honey from the head chef's own apiary, for example.”

But the star of this show is the sparkling wine, and bubbles are celebrated everywhere you look.

“We’ve worked hard to achieve a fun, funky vibe that reflects the bubbles of our product,” said Haylee.

“We produce a delicious drinking wine that comes at a great price point, and we celebrate that. When you walk into our cellar door, there are pink neon lights, bubbles drifting from the ceiling, sparkles and bling as well as a huge range of merchandise that people love. Culinary Clash of the Titans… FOOD FIGHT 2024

Brace yourselves, foodies! The Hunter Culinary Association has unveiled the four chefs ready to battle it out at the highly anticipated Food Fight 2024. This consumer-voted luncheon event is the hottest ticket in town, where culinary titans go head-to-head for the coveted title. Each attendee will have the opportunity to cast their vote for the best dish, contributing to the final decision.

On Tuesday, 25 June, at Rydges Resort Hunter Valley, four local chefs will showcase their skills in an all-Hunter showdown that promises to be a gastronomic spectacle. Get ready to witness a clash of culinary titans as they vie for your vote.

The lineup for this year's Food Fight features some of the region's most accomplished chefs:

• Mitchell Beswick from the Two Hatted Muse Restaurant in Pokolbin

• Sam Alexander of the One Hat Yellow Billy Restaurant, also in Pokolbin

• Matthew Smith from the 5-Star Crystalbrook Kingsley's Roundhouse Restaurant in Newcastle

• Nicolas Pedemonte from the all-new Apé Yakitori Bar & Restaurant in Newcastle

“These chefs have all contributed to the rise of the Hunter culinary scene,” said Gus Maher, Chairman of the Hunter Culinary Association.

“They understand the Food Fight rules—cook great food and have fun! This year, we're adding a local twist, with chefs from Wine Country and Newcastle battling for the title.”

As always, each course, prepared by a different chef and kept a secret from the diners, will be expertly paired with outstanding wines from the HCA's Wine Partners: First Creek Wines, Margan Wines, Peter Drayton Wines, Thomas Wines, and Usher Tinkler Wines.

“We urge foodies, industry professionals, and supporters to book early, as this event is our annual fundraiser supporting the development of culinary talent in our region,” Maher added.

“It's a great reason to come along and support these four exceptional chefs and the restaurants they represent.”

Blending wines is nothing new, but these days, winemakers around the world are getting downright adventurous with their mixing and matching. From classic combos like Cabernet Merlot to funky fusions like Vermentino meets Chenin Blanc, they're creating unique vinous concoctions to tantalise our tastebuds. And you know what? We're here for it!

The art of blending different grape varieties has been around for centuries - way back when folks probably just chucked whatever they had into the same barrel and called it a day. But nowadays, it's a finely tuned craft. It's all about combining complementary flavours and textures to craft a wine that's better than the sum of its parts. A little bit of this rich red, a little bit of that zippy white - the possibilities are endless when you start playing mix-and-match with different varietals.

Don't be fooled, though. Some of the most famous wines on the planet are actually blends masquerading as single varietals. Think you're sipping on a pure Cabernet Sauvignon from Bordeaux? Think again, my friend! The great reds of that famous French region are top-notch blends. The same goes for those celebrated Super Tuscans from Italy—they bring together a whole gang of grape varieties. Even our beloved Aussie icon Penfolds Grange is a seamless blend of Shiraz and Cabernet from multiple regions. Who knew, right?

Heck, Champagne itself is a brilliant blend! Those iconic bubbles are created by harmonising two or more grape varieties, such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and the often underrated Pinot Meunier. Each adds its own flair to the fizzy party—it's like a grape variety supergroup taking the stage in your flute.

Closer to home, we Aussies love a good Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend—that zesty, herbaceous Savvy complemented by the richer, more rounded Semillon. It's a classic white blend ideal for cracking with some

fresh seafood or your favourite Thai curry. But we're not just sticking to the classics anymore. Shiraz is the chameleon of the wine world, playing nicely with all sorts of funky blending partners.

Think about it - peppery Grenache? Heavenly match. Or how about savoury, earthy Sangiovese? Shiraz enriches that Italian charmer beautifully. Don't get me started on the magic that happens when you blend a white like Viognier into a Shiraz...talk about a flavour kaleidoscope! Suddenly you've got this rich, velvety red packed with exotic florals and stone fruits. It's like the vinous version of spiking the punch at an overly stuffy soiree.

Of course, the best blends don't just taste fabulous - they're brilliant food wines, too. Complex enough to handle bold proteins while still being approachable and food-friendly. A robust Cabernet blend is your best mate for a hearty steak or earthy mushroom dish. While an easydrinking Shiraz blend is going to play very nicely with your next backyard BBQ spread. Even the whites make great food partners - chill down that Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and pair it with all your summer salads and lighter bites.

So, next time you're perusing those wine labels, don't be afraid to go off the beaten path. An adventurous blended wine might just tickle your fancy in unexpected ways.
