EDITOR’S NOTE

I

f ever we needed a Holiday Season to cheer us up, this year is it. So I say, bring it on! If you and your family are

looking for ways to help others during this time of Thanksgiving, look no further than your neighbors. There is still a ton of work to be done, and some families still have no homes. Ask around on Facebook, check with the Cape Fear Volunteer Center, or just ask your friends. Everyone knows someone who could use some extra help this year. If you want to just get away from it all, that is understandable too! Disney is amazing during the holidays, and our Family Travel

Thank you for choosing us to be your Family Favorite Pediatric Dentist again this year! 2606 Iron Gate Dr. Suite 200,Wilmington, NC

section has some helpful tips to make the trip a little easier on your budget and your sanity. Of course, Fall is coming a little late this year, and you still might be able to catch some beautiful colors in the western part of the state. I recommend Boone if you have a moment to run away. There is plenty to keep families busy over there when you tire of admiring leaves.

Make sure everyone gets their flu shot early this year! Last year was horrendous and once we all realized how bad it was going to be, the vaccines were nowhere to be found. Check out Fit Family for a few promotions that could net you some cash with a little flu protection thrown in for fun. Happy Thanksgiving!

The average age that kids in North Carolina first try alcohol is around 14. The first step to prevent underage drinking is for families to start having open and honest conversations about the dangers of alcohol. Join this contest to inspire families to overcome their hesitation and pledge to start having these important conversations. Right now, parents and teens in North Carolina can Take the Pledge to Talk It Out — and possibly win $200 while discussing smart alcohol choices. Talk It Out NC, a state-sponsored initiative to reduce underage drinking, has launched a new contest to encourage parents and teens to Take the Pledge to start the conversation about alcohol. The #WeTookThePledge contest runs through Nov. 15 and will award five people who take the pledge with $200 Visa gift cards. To win, parents and teens should complete the pledge card online at www.talkitoutnc.org. The pledge cards encourage parents and teens to make smart choices about alcohol by providing manageable steps to follow.

NC Countdown to College is an initiative that aims to help high school seniors apply to college. On of their main activities is College Application Week that typically takes place in October. During this week, volunteers at hundreds of NC high schools help students submit online applications for admission while some colleges offer application fee waiver opportunities. In light of the significant impact of Hurricane Florence on many schools and families in eastern North Carolina, a number of colleges have extended their admission application fee waivers until November 16th (5:00 pm) for students in 31 FEMA-designated counties. When a student is completing their application on CFNC.org, the system will provide the special fee waiver option based on the county in their permanent/mailing address on the application. The women of Wrightsville United Methodist Church are holding the Fourth Annual Cookie Walk on December 8, 2018. This event is a fundraiser and all proceeds are distributed to charities that help women and children in our local area. This is a unique and fun event for Wilmington families. Participants select their own assortment of cookies and treats from thousands displayed in a beautiful holiday setting. Each participant receives a glove and a box upon entering, then let the choosing begin! The cost is $8.00/pound for your selected goodies. If you’ve started holiday shopping, let me give you a hand. One of my biggest dilemmas is balancing time and budget. The Shopping Apps could save you in both areas of your life. Flip – No more comparison shopping on paper. Flip consolidates coupons by gathering weekly promotional flyers and coupons from every local store in your area, plus online retailers. It is also available on desktop, so you can set up your shopping list at home and head out armed with your deals on your phone. Honey - No more hunting for coupon codes! Honey is a browser extension, which makes it the perfect application if you’re an online, at-home shopper. Shop as you normally would and when you’re ready to check out, Honey will automatically apply the best coupon code it can find at checkout.

Plan to Have the Best Party Ever!

ShopSavvy - Never suffer buyer’s remorse again! Shop Savvy helps you “find the right product at the right price.” This comparison shopping and barcode scanner app draws from a massive library of product reviews where real ShopSavvy editors have tested and evaluated products to help people make informed purchase decisions. Have a tip, lead, or just an interesting bit of news to share? I want to hear all about it! Send me an email to danielle.wilmingtonparent@gmail.com.

Grabease Self Feeder By now we’re sure you have mastered eating with a fork and spoon! But babies don’t come into the world quite so adept. Grabease are utensils designed to help your little ones learn to self-feed safely and, rejoice mamas, quickly! Not only are they functional but they also make amazing gifts this holiday season for parents eager to help their little ones on that mighty road to independence. Talk about a win-win! Grabease features a choke-proof barrier preventing toddlers and babies from choking. The utensils are designed to promote proper hand grasp and help your babe strengthen pincer grasp, hand strength, and improves fine motor skills. Grabease is also dedicated to supporting children’s charities and giving back to those in need. Via their Buy One, Give One program, Grabease donates a set to a baby in need for every white set purchased.

Life Tales Child Journal Most of us in the area either suffered loss of precious memorable items during Hurricane Florence, or know someone who did. I for one, am grateful for all the photos I took post-Facebook. The ones taken before Facebook, are lost. Some families do not trust social media sites with their private family photos, but digital record is crucial. Life Tales fills that gap. With the free LifeTales app, you can add on the Child Journal. With this you can easily create and privately share your stories and experiences with family and friends, such as your vacations, weekly photos of the kids, your health journey, etc. Choose who you want to share each story with and no other contact will even know you created it! You can also invite family and friends to contribute to each story you create. v

A Dozen STEM Activities to Engage Kids of All Ages By Lisa Beach

W

ith the big push for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in schools these days, you might wonder what you can do at home to boost your kids’ sense of curiosity, problem-solving, and STEM skills. Plenty, even with younger kids! The good news? You don’t need to be a math whiz or science buff to explore STEM topics with your kids. Try these ideas with the kids of all ages in your family:

Watch fun science videos together on YouTube. Some standouts include NatGeo Kids Cool Science Experiments and Bayer’s Making Science Make Sense videos. In Bayer’s kid-friendly films, for instance, kids get the low-down on intriguing topics such as What Makes a Curveball Curve?, Why Do Ice Cubes Float?, When Do Fish Sleep?, What Is a Shooting Star?, and How Does a Microwave Work?

Challenge her to teach herself. Many online opportunities exist to help your child boost her technology skills. For example, she can learn to code onCode.org and Tynker. She can create games and animations at Scratch.mit.edu. She can build a website using WordPress.com and upload photos and videos. She can use the open-source MIT App Inventor to create software applications.

Tap into your personal and professional network to connect your kids with any STEM professionals you might know. Invite them to dinner for a casual chat over family dinner. Doing so gives your kids a better understanding of career possibilities, such as civil engineer, computer programmer, architect, financial planner, environmental scientist, or veterinarian. Bring science to life with hands-on family fun trips. Visit a planetarium, arboretum, zoo, factory, science museum, nature trail, or observatory. Explore STEM concepts at work though hands-on exhibits, demonstrations, and interactive experiences. In nature, bring along a notebook to record observations or sketch pictures. 14 | November 2018 | Wilmington Parent

Create a “maker box.” Stock your home with supplies that encourage creativity, building, and invention. Some ideas: small cardboard boxes and tubes, PlayDoh, PVC plastic pipes and connectors, LEGO’s, string, wooden building blocks, Duct Tape, Lincoln Logs, pipe cleaners, etc. Assign her a tech role. If your child has a knack for technology, ask her to help you figure out your smartphone or show you how to download photos to your laptop. Dub her your family’s tech guru to instill confidence! STEM RESOURCES FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES Bring Science Home (at-home science activities for kids ages 6-12) Curiosity Machine Challenges (hands-on engineering challenges for ages 10+) Exploratorium (hands-on science and math activities for ages 12+) Figure This! Math Challenges for Families (math activities for ages 5+) MAKE Magazine (“celebrates your right to tweak, hack, and bend any technology to your will”) MAKER Camp Project Paths (printable activities for ages 6+ you can do at home together) Science News for Students (teen-friendly science resources) STEM Sprouts from Boston Children’s Museum (teaching guide for preschoolers) Young Scientist Lab (family activities from 3M and Discovery Education) v Lisa Beach is a freelance journalist and copywriter. SPECIAL SECTION: Welcome the Holidays

Make Giving Tuesday a Family Affair G

iving Tuesday is the perfect time to step back from the holiday madness and turn your focus towards giving rather than receiving. Get the whole family involved by choosing a cause or causes you are all especially passionate about. This could be a certain disease, children, animals, local families in need, veterans, bringing clean water to people in third world countries or even local relief efforts. Here are some steps to get you started:

Choose how much money you can sacrifice, and whether you plan to break that up into multiple pieces and give to multiple organizations, or bestow the full sum to one organization you strongly believe in. Do some research. Ask your friends, family, church community, or school for ideas. Then check www.charitynavigator.org to learn more about the organization. This website gives each charity a grade, and tells you what percentage of your donation goes to marketing, the actual cause, how much the CEO makes, and more. It’s so interesting! Involve others. Include your whole family in the process! Some organizations make giving an engaging family activity. You could pick out

animals to gift to a family through World Vision. Or, you could pay for a child’s life-changing surgery and receive email updates through Cure.org. Involve your extended family or circle of friends. Have these conversations now so you can be ready for Giving Tuesday! One major benefit of giving on Giving Tuesday is that many corporations will match your donations to certain organizations. This makes your dollars go farther. BUT, if you miss Giving Tuesday, give on Wednesday. Or Thursday. Don’t use the date or your busy schedule as an excuse. Remember that the idea behind Giving Tuesday is an all-out effort to increase giving during the holidays.

LOCAL GIVING You can also find local families that are still recovering from Hurricane Florence that are in need by contacting the local Salvation Army. Sponsor a local family through their “Adopt-A-Family” program. You will get lists of what a family needs, you purchase everything and wrap it so that the family has gifts to open, hygiene products to use, food baskets, etc. Your kids will have a blast shopping for other kids, and your entire family can be involved in preparing and wrapping the gifts. v

6 WAYS FAMILIES CAN HONOR A VETERAN By Christa Melnyk Hines

CArameLlo LEChe

SPECIAL SECTION: Welcome the Holidays

D

uring this month of Thanksgiving, don’t forget our military service members. Many organizations and veterans groups offer ways to help support and show gratitude to members of the armed forces. Help a veteran, a deployed service member and military families know that you appreciate their sacrifices. Here’s how:

1) Help an expectant military mom. Nothing relieves a soldier’s worries than knowing his family is supported back home. Soldiers’ Angels Baby Brigade (formerly Operation Top Knot), an organization started by college student Audri Cid in 2003, is a nationwide network of individuals who sew, knit and create gift baskets to support new and expectant mothers whose husbands are deployed. To donate baby blankets, diapers, bottles, clothing and other items, visit https://soldiersangels.org/Baby-Brigade-Team.html. 2) Support their furry friends. Raise money to go toward fostering pets of active duty service members, wounded warriors and homeless veterans. Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet is a nonprofit organization that finds qualified foster families to care for pets while soldiers are deployed or when military families transfer overseas. The foster families also care for pets whose warriors have died.

3) Contribute to Paralyzed Veterans of America. This organization supports veterans who suffer from a spinal cord injury. Participate in one of the organization’s sporting events or fundraisers, make a monetary donation or collect and donate bags of clothing, shoes, belts, hats, books, CDs and small household goods. For more information, visit www.pva.org.

4) Assist disabled and wounded veterans. Volunteer at your local Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital or help disabled veterans whether running errands, doing yard work or assisting them with transportation. Contact www.dav.org for more information. Also, check out the Wounded Warrior Project for other ways to help injured service members.

wilmingtonparent.com New Business Listings

5) Help them call home. Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) supports and assists military veterans and their families through a variety of programs, including Operation Uplink. The program enables service members and hospitalized veterans to make free calls back home to loved ones for three days each month. Go to www.VFW.com to find out how you can make a donation. 6) Aid service dogs. PatriotPaws trains dogs to serve disabled veterans. You can volunteer to help the organization by bathing and walking dogs, running errands or fundraising. For more information visit www.patriotpaws.org. v For more ways to thank a vet, visit www.kidsthankavet.com.

HEALTHY HOLIDAY PARTYING

SPECIAL SECTION: Welcome the Holidays

By Sandra Gordon

D

uring the holidays, food isn’t just food, it’s a delicious experience loaded with tradition and temptation. And if you’re not careful, in the five weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, the indulgent delights of stuffing, pumpkin pie and eggnog can become the harsh reality extra pounds. The good news? During the winter holiday season, a study by the National Institutes of Health concluded that most people probably gain only about a pound. The bad news? The one-pound holiday weight gain is an average. “In my experience, there are plenty of people who gain more like six to eight pounds,” says Linda Spangle, a weight-loss coach and author of 100 Days of Weight Loss. To survive the season, you need to party healthy, not hearty. The key is putting together a party strategy that keeps your portions--and your appetite--under control. Here’s how:

Don’t Arrive Famished “For several days before a party, cut back on both fat and calories,” advises nutritionist and registered dietitian Riska Platt. That way, you’ll be able to eat a little more without worrying about it. But never arrive at a party starving, or you’ll overeat. Instead, have a piece of fruit, a small salad or a cup of low-fat yogurt before leaving home. A solid snack will keep you from pouncing on the mini hot dogs as soon as you arrive.

Use Delay Tactics Once you arrive at a party, have a virgin Bloody Mary, a diet soda, or a glass of seltzer mixed with fruit juice. Hold off on the hors d’oeuvres and champagne for a while. “The longer you put off eating and drinking alco-

hol, the less time you’ll have to overindulge,” says Cathy Nonas, R.D., author of Outwit Your Weight. Research shows that consuming alcohol and high-fat appetizers may cause you to eat more during the main course. To avoid feeling deprived and dodge the social pressure from others, put the seltzer in a wine glass or the diet soda in a high-ball glass. “No one will know you’re having a completely low-damage drink,” says Spangle.

Fill Your Plate You read it right. Once you give yourself the go-ahead to dig in, use a plate rather than grabbing handfuls of everything. Fill three-quarters of your plate with chopped fresh vegetables and fruit, reserving the remaining quarter for anything you want, whether or not it’s low in fat. If you’re at a buffet dinner, serve yourself healthy foods--salads, grain dishes and vegetables that aren’t covered in cream. Don’t feel obligated to eat whatever you take--ditto with dessert. And whatever you do, sit down to savor each and every bite.

Change Your Tune Research shows that eating while listening to fast, loud music may cause you to consume more food. It takes your brain about 10 minutes to register satiety. But the faster the musical beat, the more quickly you’ll eat, which means you may have already gone back for seconds before your brain tells you that your stomach’s full. On the other hand, soft background music has a calming effect and may foster one of the qualities of a great party--interesting conversation. When dining at home over the holidays, put on slow and soothing tunes. v

The Healthy Holiday Bar With the exception of creamy concoctions like eggnog and Baileys Original Irish Cream (9 and 10 grams of fat per 4and 2-ounce serving, respectively), many holiday beverages are fat-free. But moderation is key; you know from experience that after a few drinks, your resolve to have just a taste of the melted Brie dip can fly right out the window. And don’t forget that the calories from drinks can surreptitiously add up too. To slash liquid calories, take these holiday tips: • For red or white wine (80 to 85 calories per 4-ounce glass), slash calories in half by making a spritzer (half wine, half sparkling water). • For beer (145 calories per 12 ounce glass), choose a lite beer and save 45 calories per glass. • Sangria (80 calories per 4-ounce glass), pack the fruit garnish into the glass first to crowd out the beverage. • Champagne (100 calories per 4-ounce glass), dilute with orange juice and squeeze out 20 calories per flute. • Margarita (195 calories per 4.5-ounce glass), save 20 calories per ounce with the frozen version. • Vodka with cranberry juice (130 calories per 6-ounce glass), serve heavily iced with just a splash of vodka.

DINNER IS DONE, NOW WHAT? Ideas for Post Thanksgiving Dinner Fun By Christa Melnyk Hines

A

fter all of the hours of prep work that goes into Thanksgiving dinner, it seems as if it’s gobbled up in no time flat. Now what? Here’s a bounty of activity ideas, big and small, for the entire family to enjoy after the big feast.

Sign a pumpkin. According to positive psychology research, simply ex-

pressing gratitude can actually enhance our overall happiness. Invite your family to consider their individual blessings. Purchase a large artificial pumpkin that you can bring out each year for your family to sign. Ask each person to write a note on it about what they’re most grateful for this year. Perhaps a new baby arrived into the family, wedding bells will soon be ringing, your child got an A in a difficult class, or a loved one overcame a health issue. Be sure and have everyone sign and date it.

Create a Thanksgiving tablecloth. Similar to the pumpkin idea, lay the Thanksgiving table with a memory tablecloth. After the table is cleared, each person can write a note to the host or a note of gratitude using fabric markers. Protect your table by placing a matte like cardboard under the tablecloth in case ink bleeds through it.

Get out the board games. Get your kids off of their phones and video games and engaging in lighthearted family fun and conversation with a board game. In a world where more and more people say they have zero confidants, playing games together can build camaraderie and provides a low-key, entertaining opportunity for face-to-face togetherness. Some family favorites include Catan, Pandemic, Telestrations and Clue. Plan a scavenger hunt. If the weather is agreeable, send everyone outside for a scavenger hunt. Give each team a small bag to collect their items or have them use their cameras to take photos of the items on the list. Keep

the hunt simple for youngsters and a little more complicated for older kids. Items on your list might include: something red, a heart shaped leaf, a stick shaped like a Y, a black rock, a feather, etc. Team adults with kids and turn the hunt into a fun race to the finish. The winning team receives the first slice of pie or a silly prize like pilgrim’s hats to wear on their heads.

Puzzle fun. Lauri Duncan, a mom of two boys ages 9 and 12, says that she and her family traditionally put a puzzle together after the big dinner. “We do one big puzzle every year that every age can work on. The kids, parents, cousins, grandparents all chip in and work on it in rotations throughout the afternoon between naps and football and snacking on leftovers,” she says.

Pumpkin Tic-Tac-Toe. Choose five small white gourds and five small orange gourds. Make a grid on a card table using craft or painter’s tape. Or use larger gourds and set up the game in your yard using sticks to make nine squares. Remember those on deployment. If your spouse is deployed for military duty over the Thanksgiving holiday, he or she will definitely be on top of you and your family’s mind. After dinner, invite your family and friends to circle around the table to make cards and write letters to your absent loved one. Mail everything in a package. Even though your honey will receive it after the holiday, they’ll know that they were still an important part of your day. v Freelance journalist Christa Melnyk Hines and her husband are the parents of two sons, ages 13 and 11. Every year after the big feast, they take their two dogs and and anyone else who wants to tag along for a walk through the crunchy autumn leaves.

THREE CHEERS FOR TEACHERS! Holiday Gift Ideas For Teachers That Won’t Bust Your Budget By Christina Katz

D

on’t be a Grinch with your child’s teachers this holiday season if you have high hopes for a happy and productive school year. The energy and attitude of your child’s teacher has a daily impact on how your child performs in school. In recent years, teachers have been asked to take on extra duties often accompanied by pay cuts. This not only hits teachers in their wallets personally, it impacts their ability to enrich classroom materials and learning context, although most teachers end up paying out of pocket for these things anyway. Your donations of money, time, and cheer to your child’s classroom can boost a teacher’s ability to consistently do his best work. And when you rally the other parents in your child’s classroom to do the same, you will be amazed at how happy and productive your child’s classroom can become. If your child catches you being generous to her teacher, and working together in harmony, she sees a terrific example of how to like and trust authority figures, which will pay off for a lifetime. Here is an alphabet of teacher gift ideas that will put a big smile on three faces-yours, your child’s, and your child’s teacher’s-without breaking the bank this holiday season. A is for art supplies that enrich the learning experience B is for books, for teachers and for the classroom C is for chocolates, candies, or cupcakes D is for donations to a charity in her name E is for erasers in all shapes and sizes F is for food baskets, think: fast, ethnic, or organic G is for games for classroom downtime H is for handmade mugs, frames or vases J is for jewelry or anything bedazzled K is for kitchen gadgets everyone always needs L is for lottery tickets stuffed in a personal note M is for money in any form-coins, cash or checks N is for a personal note of praise sent to the principal O is for office supplies, but any type of supplies will do P is for a potted perennial or herb plant Q is for quote books your teacher would fancy R is for recipe books written for busy people S is for salts, scrubs, or soaps T is for tea, but don’t forget the coffee U is for a big colorful umbrella V is for volunteering your time with a smile W is for a water bottle that will last all day Y is for a yearbook donation so no child is left without Z is for Zinnias, but any colorful bouquet would do v

FAMILY TRAVEL

T

NEED-TO-KNOW TIPS FOR DISNEY TRIP SUCCESS

he holidays are a magical time to visit the most enchanting theme park! If your family is planning to spend some time at Disney during this time, follow these tips for a memorable experience.

Download the free My Disney Experience App. You can use it to check wait times for rides, manage dining reservations, choose FastPasses, plan an itinerary, and more. All Disney parks and resorts have free WiFi, so it won’t burn your data. Stay on Disney property. This ensures the most stress-free vacation, unless you’re planning to visit other Orlando theme parks. The Disney All-Star resorts and Disney Pop Century are budget-friendly options, and you’ll still enjoy benefits like: • Free airport transports with Disney’s Magical Express • Regular bus transportation to all the Disney parks • Extra Magic Hours (when the parks are open early or late for resort guests) • Free Magic Bands

Bringing your own food into the Disney parks is totally allowed, and is a great way to save money. Disney hotels allow free package pick up, so you can ship yourself a box of bread, peanut butter, cereal, and snacks to enjoy on your trip.

Don’t buy water bottles around the Disney parks. Any food counter that sells soft drinks will serve you free ice water upon request. You can also bring a reusable water bottle and fill up at water fountains.

Take advantage of single rider lines, which often move pretty fast. They’re available at three popular attractions: Test Track in Epcot, Expedition Everest in Animal Kingdom, and Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster at Hollywood Studios. Plan around parades and fireworks. Wait times will drop during these events. Just make sure you’re on the correct side of the park before they start, because certain routes will be closed off and you could end up stuck.

Buy passes in bulk. If you’re traveling with a large group, you can save a chunk of change by buying Disney park passes through Undercover Tourist. You can save as much as $71 per ticket versus gate price—that’s like eight plates of Mickey waffles.

Embrace the Magic Band. Provided free to resort guests, and also available for purchase, this colorful bracelet serves as your park ticket, FastPass, room key, and credit card. You won’t need to carry a wallet at all—just your ID if you plan on drinking.

Be on top of FastPass+ selections. The reservation period opens up 60 days before your trip for resort guests, and 30 days before if you just have park tickets. Passes disappear fast for popular and new attractions, so you won’t want to delay.

Cast member photographers are stationed in key spots around the Disney parks. While they take professional photos you can later purchase, you can also ask for them to take a picture with your personal camera and they’ll oblige.

Dining reservations are a must if you want a sit-down meal in Walt Disney World. If you aren’t sure about your plans, grab the reservations anyway—you can cancel up to 11:59 pm the day before the reservation.

Hold off on buying souvenirs until the end of the day to save yourself the trouble of carrying around—or even losing—your purchases. However, Disney resort guests can elect to have things sent back to the hotel for free! v

OUR PETS

Thanksgiving Food Do and Don’t

Thanksgiving is a day of family, fun, and feasting. But those of us with pets should be mindful that not all human foods and activities are good for our furry companions.

DO Make Some Turkey Day Treats for Your Pet. Though some Thanksgiving foods are not pet-safe, many are. And the internet is packed with quick and easy recipes that let your four-legged friends share in the holiday feast. For example, bake up some chicken dog biscuits. Or cook up some mini pumpkin pies (a.k.a. pup-kin pies) that are both pet-safe and delicious! Recipe for Mini Pup-kin Pies: Ingredients List 3 tbsp organic, creamy (unsalted) peanut butter 1 cup whole wheat flour ½ cup water 1 egg 1 cup pumpkin puree (plain pumkin only, no pumpkin pie filling) Preheat oven to 350° F. 2. Combine peanut butter, flour, water and egg in a bowl. Mix well. 3. Divide mixture (crust) evenly to cover bottom of your mini muffin cups. (We used silicone, paw-shaped pans.) Be sure to create a crust edge for your mini pies by going up the edge of the mold. 4. Take pumpkin puree and spoon equal sized dollops onto each crust. 5. Bake 18-20 minutes or until the puree begins to turn a golden brown. 6. Remove from oven and let cool completely.

DON’T Assume “If we can eat it, they can too.” Many foods that are healthy for humans, aren’t good for our companion animals. Avoid turkey bones: Delicate bones can splinter in the digestive tract and large bones can become stuck and require surgical removal. Avoid giving your pets foods containing onions or garlic, as these can impede the ability of your dog’s red blood cells to carry oxygen.

NomNomNow NomNomNow is the gift your pets want to receive this holiday season. Get your favorite fourlegged friend a special edition holiday treat bundle featuring a bag of their soon-to-be new favorite beef jerky treats, as well as their limited edition seasonal pork and pumpkin strips along with a surprise extra gift. Pricing varies, but should be around $35 with free shipping. www.nomnomnow.com

Kovu & Rambo the Rescue Rabbits Kovu, the beautiful white girl, is a 3 year old lion-head mix & Rambo, the macho gray male, is a 5 year old angora mix. They are a bonded pair, and Kovu has been with her family for 3 years and Rambo for 2. Kovu came from a farm and Rambo is a rescue from NHC Rabbit Rescue here in Wilmington. They are (mostly) litter box trained and very sweet, they love to be petted though they do not like to be picked up. They are friendly and curious and their family loves them to pieces! They both have to be brushed and spend a lot of time grooming each other, they are definitely best friends! They like to play in their tunnel and their condo and have free run of our downstairs living area (bunny proofed of course). Favorite veggies are cilantro and sweet potatoes and they love bananas as occasional treats. They like to throw their toys around and insist on having things in a certain place so clean up day is not their favorite. Rambo is famous, though it is because he was severely neglected before he came to the rescue, he was on Inside Edition! They have their own instagram page @bunniesbythesea and the entire family volunteers with the Rabbit Rescue. If you want more information on NHC Rabbit Rescue of Wilmington, a 501c nonprofit organization, with the mission to protect and stop the exploitation of pet domesticated rabbits, please see their website at www.nhcrabbitrescue.org, facebook: @NHCRRofWilmington or instagram: @nhc_rabbit_rescue.

We all love to show off our nonhuman family members, and now is your chance to have a bigger audience! Send in your pet photos to danielle.wilmingtonparent@gmail.com with a little information about their unique personality and how they fit in to your family, and they may be featured in an upcoming issue!

MIND AND BODY

5 WAYS NEGLECTING YOUR TEETH CAN COST YOU – IN MONEY AND IN HEALTH By Dr. Ramón Durán

H

ere’s a hard fact to chew on: Adults between the ages of 20 and 64 average losing about seven permanent teeth, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Lost teeth are just one of the many costs that can be incurred by neglecting your oral health. Dental professionals say a lack of preventative care by patients is often at the root of dental problems; only 37 percent of adults participating in the NIDCR survey reported visiting a dentist in the previous year. Here are five ways neglecting your oral health can cost you - not just in money but also in medical issues:

Implants. These are the expensive replacements for those teeth you lost. They can run anywhere from $1,500 to $6,000 for a single tooth. Dentists link implants with what they call “opportunity costs” – the choice one relinquishes when making a poor dental health decision. Deciding not to brush at least twice a day and floss, opting for sugary foods and snacks, not visiting your dentist twice a year – all are opportunity costs. Your mouth is a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, and if neglected, one the most direct results is tooth loss.

Jobs. Yes, yellowed, missing or crooked teeth can cost you a job. An American Dental Association survey found young adults and low-income

26 | November 2018 | Wilmington Parent

adults agreed that the appearance of their mouth affected their ability to interview. One reason: they were too embarrassed to smile. Like it or not, we’re often judged by our appearance. We often associate a person’s oral health with some of the social biases we have.

Diabetes. The National Institute of Health’s report “Oral Health in America” links periodontitis to diabetes. Periodontitis is the inflammation of the tissue around the teeth, often causing shrinkage of the gums and loosening of the teeth. Reports have suggested it’s a two-way street for these diseases. Periodontal disease may have a negative impact on glycemic control. Heart disease and stroke. Certain bacteria that thrive in dental infections are being identified as potentially linked to heart disease. Bacteria or viruses in the mouth can get directly into the bloodstream, with the possibility of causing blood clots and narrowing of the arteries.

COPD. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, caused by chronic bronchitis, recurrent respiratory infection or emphysema, has been associated with periodontal disease. This can happen due to bacterial pneumonia living in the mouth and making its way to the airway. The cost of choosing not to take proper care of your teeth and gums is greater than many people imagine. It could be the cost of an implant, dentures, your overall health – and even your life. v
