W

e have had a colorful start to spring this year! The azaleas truly represented this year and I’ve enjoyed the sights and smells of this beautiful town, if not the pollen, all month. Spring break, however, has passed and summer vacation is looming. If you are like me and a last minute planner, we’ve got your back! The Summer Camp listing is still available starting on page 18, and we continue to offer a glimpse into a few local camps in our Spotlights on page 20. This month we celebrate all the moms! Gifts ideas and new products can be found throughout this issue. We also have a whole section dedicated to moms, babies and toddlers starting on page 12. This issue is packed with resources for the unique needs of moms and their little ones. Wilmington is a special place to be if you care about supporting your local farmers and artisans. We have Farmers’ Markets on various days located all over the county for your fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, and baked goods needs. Page 10 breaks down the details of every market available and a little information about what you can find at each location! Bring the kids and enjoy teaching them about where their food is created and how it gets to their plates! Happy Mother’s Day!

LOCAL NEWS Wilmington History Tour for Kids The Cape Fear region is packed full of history, and not just the boring kind! Kids will find history fun while visiting these amazing locations around town. Make a plan during your summer break to fit in some historical excitement this year! Fort Fisher State Historic Site - The most popular of North Carolina’s state-maintained historic sites. Kids will love touring the earthwork complex, guarding the New River entry to the Cape Fear River, or the Shepherd’s Battery, with its replica 32-pounder cannon. The visitors’ center offers a video and displays exhibits from the fort’s history. A fiber-optic map, with thousands of lights, re-creates the final battle. Re-enactors frequently camp here, with musket drills and occasional artillery firings. Admission is free; donations accepted. historicsites.nc.gov.

Finding the Best NC Strawberries May is strawberry season in North Carolina, and there is no shortage of places to stock up on enough of these juicy berries to last you through the year. So get your buckets and canning supplies ready and get picking! Lewis Farms - Located on Gordon Rd in Ogden, and open for picking from 9am-6pm daily (except Sunday opens at 1pm), this is the premier spot for getting the best strawberries. Don’t leave without picking up some plants for the garden and homemade ice cream. Carolina Strawberry Festival - If you don’t feel like picking them, and just want to enjoy them, stop in and grab some treats while having a little extra fun too. The Carolina Strawberry Festival, in historic downtown Wallace on May 3 & 4, features live music, a car show, vendors, games, carnival rides, model trains, touch tank, car show, cornhole tournament, and helicopter rides. Carol Sue Farms - Located at 18055 Hwy 17 in Hampstead. Hours for Upick are Monday through Saturday 9am-6pm and Sunday 12:30-6pm. Homemade blueberry ice cream is a must here! Mike’s Farm - Mostly known for their pumpkins, but did you know they have a Upick strawberry patch too? While you’re there, spend some time enjoying the rest of the farm’s fun, and have a nice country meal at the restaurant! Located at 1600 Haw Branch Rd in Beulaville, and open Thursday - Saturday 12-8pm.

Bellamy Mansion - Completed just before the Civil War. The house is now operated as an architectural museum. The restored servants’ quarters in the rear offer a rare view into urban slave life. They often have family events and tea times. bellamymansion.org. Poplar Grove Plantation - This manor house was home to generations of the Foy family, who grew peanuts on the property. House tours are available daily, and there are displays on the grounds to explore the everyday life of slaves. Located in Scotts Hill near the New Hanover-Pender county line. Kids will also love a visit to the stables to see farm animals. Dual tickets are available to both Bellamy Mansion and Poplar Grove for $20. poplargrove.org. Missiles and More Museum - Located in the former missile Assembly Building, the museum preserves artifacts from “Operation Bumblebee,” a secret Navy testing program for early ramjet missiles. Other exhibits cover the nearby World War II base Camp Davis and coastal Pender history. Located at 720 Channel Blvd., Topsail Beach. Admission is free; donations encouraged. missilesandmoremuseum.org.

SPECIAL SECTION: Summer Camp Guide

How many years has he attended this camp? 2-3 weeks every summer for the past 5 years. What is a lasting memory that you would like to share that he experienced at this camp? One time he won the giant “Toilet Paper Ball of Victory” which when unraveled revealed a prize inside. He loved the constant surprises. What activity does he look forward to every day? Tyler liked how Michael Rosander, the founder of Magic Camp, would dress up as different characters to perform the tricks every camper would learn. What is some advice you would like to share with other parents who might be sending their kids off to camp for the first time? Expect the unexpected. As a parent, all you will have to do is ask your child, “tell me all about your day at Magic Camp?” and you will have a 20-minute conversation.

CAMP SPOTLIGHT Zuri and Sonali Reid Carolina Gymnastics Academy

How many years has she attended this camp? 5 Years What is a lasting memory that you would like to share that she experienced at this camp? We were just laughing yesterday about how Zuri did a magic show with no magic, which ended up being a comedy show which made the other campers crack up laughing. What activity does she look forward to every day? Reading and gymnastics everywhere What is some advice you would like to share with other parents who might be sending their kids off to camp for the first time? Check out the camp. Meet the campers. See it for yourself. Most importantly, check out your child’s body language after camp to understand how camp makes them feel.

CAMP SPOTLIGHT Kaylee Pettigrew UNCW MarineQuest

What was the deciding factor for your family in choosing this camp? I’ve been to many MarineQuest camps and I keep coming back because every summer I can try a new camp. We love everything about the ocean so a camp that explores the beach is exciting! How many years has she attended this camp? 7 Years What is a lasting memory that you would like to share that she experienced at this camp? When I got to meet all the surf instructors in surf and science camp. They were all really funny and they were really cool and fun and sometimes they would make a competition out of each of us getting a good wave. What activity does she look forward to every day? I look forward to the surfing and going back to Isaac Bear to do tests on our sand and water samples. What is some advice you would like to share with other parents who might be sending their kids off to camp for the first time? Kids learn so much at camp. Each day they are able to repeat most of what they have learned. At the end of camp you always get a presentation about their week.

Mom Stress Moms typically take on the majority of the emotional labor in a family. This can cause an enormous amount of stress for mom, and when mom is stressed, the whole family will feel it. Important ways to combat stress include: • Exercise • Relaxation • Social Interaction • Healthful eating However, a mom’s busy life rarely allows time for these stress relievers. It can be just as stressful planning a moment of exercise or relaxation. It’s crucial that you take your mental health seriously, and if you are struggling to find ways to destress, you may need to call in some backup. Find a mommy coach: Don’t stress alone about your kids. Share your concerns with another mom and vow you’ll be one another’s cheerleader. Talking about your stress with someone who cares can reduce anxieties. Visit www.wilmingtonparent.com/motherssupport-groups/ to find local mom groups that can help you through your tough times. There’s a reason flight attendants remind us to put on our oxygen masks first, then on the kids. We can’t take care of our families unless we take time for ourselves. Take time for yourself. Make sure to check your stress. After all, a happy, less-stressed mom makes happier, less-stressed kids. Always has. Always will.

Ta Ta Tuesday I recently had the pleasure of meeting Joy Wade at a local health fair, and although I felt that I had seen ALL the information out there about breast cancer awareness, Joy showed me how much more I need to know. Joy Wade’s passion is to empower women and men to be their best health advocate before, during, and after a breast cancer diagnosis. Joy is the program manager of the local non-profit, Going Beyond the Pink. Joy has developed an educational initiative called “Your Breasts: What’s Normal? What’s Not?”, which has been shared with more than 1000 ladies and men ages high school through senior citizen. As a certified MammaCare Self Breast Exam Instructor her goal is to share both tactile and visual skills “to everyone with breasts” so that they can be their best advocate by knowing what their “normal” is. She also hosts a weekly TaTa Tuesday video segment through the Going Beyond the Pink social media sites. OUR PETS

Wren Scoggins & PATTON There are so many things that were meant to be with Wren & PATTON! On Wren’s 8th birthday in July of 2018, she met 1 year old PATTON, in West Virginia during the paws4people® summer “bump”. This is the process where the Dogs get to pick who their client will be. They connected and loved each other right from the start. Ironically, our family has a long time connection to General Patton’s family, who PATTON is named after. That family connection also involves Dogs, so it furthered the meaning behind the partnership that was meant to be. PATTON has been home with Wren full time since February & their bond is already so strong. They both have great tennis ball skills that keep them busy playing in the backyard. When PATTON is working out in the community, he gives Wren the support that she needs by anchoring to her in overwhelming settings. He also helps keep Wren relaxed & occupied at medical appointments, which are extremely stressful for her. At home when they are relaxing, Wren’s two favorite commands to give PATTON are “cuddle” and “kiss”. He does such a great job at them! We are so happy to not only have PATTON be such a big part of Wren’s life, but also be a part of the paws4people family! We have so many wonderful moments to look forward to in the future with Wren & PATTON. Their journey is just beginning! For more information on Wren & PATTON, please visit: https:// paws4people.org/give/wren-scoggins/

National Rescue Dog Day On May 20, National Rescue Dog Day recognizes all the benefits of allowing a four-legged canine to adopt you into their immeasurably lovable life. According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.3 million dogs enter shelters every year. When these abandoned and abused animals find their way to a shelter, each one needs a forever home and their potential is limitless. No matter their size, color, or breed, dogs will find a way to nuzzle, fetch, or beg their way into your heart. You’ll find it hard not to scratch one behind the ear.

The Essential Toolkit to Support Your Aging Pet On May 4th from 6-7:30 pm at Terra Sol Sanctuary, 507 Castle St, learn how to help your older pet during this workshop. Is your once spry and vibrant pet showing signs of aging, pain, disorientation or other age-related problems? Would you like to discover easy, natural ways of supporting them so they enjoy their twilight years as much as possible? It’s not easy to admit our beloved dogs, cats and horses are getting older and slowing down. But what if you could bring them (and you) natural relief for their aches, pains and other geriatric ailments while expanding their joy and your peace of mind? In this informative and interactive workshop, you’ll learn concrete tips for boosting your pet’s vitality, minimizing pain and bringing them peace so they live their best life possible. Conditions addressed will include mobility, anxiety, senility, diet, pain management and discipline. End of life care will also be discussed, gently and lovingly, so you know what to do and when. You’ll leave the workshop confident that you’re doing all you can to make your aging pet’s remaining years the very best they can be.

Rescue dogs provide a variety of therapeutic benefits. Children, teens, and adults with autism may benefit from services provided by trained rescue dogs. As emotional support companions, rescue dogs help to relieve anxiety, depression, and PTSD among the military or those who suffer from mental illness. They make excellent teachers, too. Rescue dogs show children about caring and kindness. Rescue dogs can even be trained to rescue us from dangerous situations or help to investigate the cause of a fire. There are a variety of ways to share the puppy love. Volunteer at your local shelter. Taking dogs for walks, grooming and giving them plenty of affection improves their socialization. Shelters always need donations. Financial donations are always welcome. Most shelters have a list of constant needs, such as blankets, bleach, toys, treats, and leashes. If there is room in your life for a rescue dog, consider adoption and giving one a forever home. Consider fostering. Many dogs abandoned to shelters require some medical care or rehabilitation in a home setting before an adoption can take place. Is there a rescue dog in your life? Share your rescue dog stories and use #NationalRescueDogDay on social media.
