EDITOR’S NOTE

A

re you all ready for a new start, new you, new adventures, new memories, new YEAR?! Let’s do this year right, no matter what! I’m ready to charge forward, while also slowing down to enjoy every little detail. We all see those babies of ours grow so quickly, but this year I will be watching my youngest baby become an adult and graduate from high school. I promise you, those little things you worried about in their younger years...they were not worth the worry. Spend your days loving the good memories and trying your hardest to laugh during the more difficult times. They will pass, fast! I for one, am not sad they are grown. That just means our adventures can now get even bigger! For those that still have plenty of years left to watch your children navigate the complexities of school life, I hope we can help you choose the best school for those years. Our Education Issue is a little different this year. We tried to give you a more personal, and useful, insight into the different schools in our area. In this issue, please enjoy the opportunity to get to know families from a variety of schools in the area. Every year there are new schools opening and giving parents plenty of options for their education needs. Whether you are looking for a school that focuses on science, arts, faith, or a different approach to learning - we have included them all! We will soon be thinking about Summer Camps, but before that, let’s first hope for only a few flakes of pretty snow the next two months, and not a winter that is trying to compete with our previous rainy season.

LOCAL NEWS Broadway For A Better World The Wilson Center and the Arts Council of Wilmington/New Hanover County announce the third grant cycle for Broadway for a Better World, a community partnership that makes performing arts accessible to underserved populations (450 individuals so far). Nonprofit organizations in New Hanover and Pender counties can apply to receive tickets to Wilson Center PNC Broadway or Stars Series performances. A majority of the tickets granted will go to organizations serving area youth. The application period runs through Jan. 14, 2019, and applications are available online at www.cfcc.edu/capefearstage/betterworld. The Arts Council will lead an independent grant committee and announce awardees in January. Below is a list of upcoming shows: Evita: January 12 & 13 Finding Neverland: February 4 & 5 Cirque Eloize SALOON: February 8 Rock of Ages: February 19 & 20 Jersey Boys: March 19 & 20 Chicago: April 26 & 27 Something Rotten: May 11 & 12 Kinky Boots: May 21 & 22 The Lightning Thief The Percy Jackson Musical: June 4 & 5

Holiday Lights Recycling and Christmas Tree Disposal It’s that time of year again, time to take down decorations and dispose of ones that will not be saved for next year. New Hanover County Public Library and Environmental Management are partnering with Keep New Hanover Beautiful to offer free holiday lights recycling throughout the county. Residents can bring lights through Jan. 4 to collection bins located at all four NHC Library locations, the mobile HazWagon and Household Hazardous Waste facility, and Wrightsville Beach Recycling Center. As for those Christmas Trees, although leaving trees in the dunes to collect sand is a popular disposal practice here on the coast, CAMA regulations frown on this. Proper disposal is available. Make sure the tree is completely free of ornaments and any other decorations, then follow these instructions: New Hanover County: Free Christmas tree recycling runs through January 15th and the trees will be recycled into mulch or compost. You can drop your tree off at Home Depot on Carolina Beach Road, Home Depot on Eastwood Road, Ogden Park near the baseball fields, and the county landfill. Brunswick County: Drop off your tree for free at the landfill through January 31st. Pender County: Drop off your tree for free at the Convenience Centers in Hampstead and Rocky Point through January 15th. Carolina Beach: Trees will be picked up each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in January. Wrightsville Beach: Curbside Christmas tree pick up is free through the end of January.

Thalian Offers 12 Reasons Supporters Should Be Proud Thalian Association Community Theatre reflects with gratitude on some of its accomplishments of the past year and offers its top 12 reasons that its supporters should be proud. “Yes, we are the Official Community Theatre of North Carolina, producing five Main Stage Thalian Hall productions each year featuring your friends and neighbors on stage who volunteer their time and talent. We never bring in outside, paid actors,” said Susan Habas, Executive Director of Thalian Association Community Theatre. “But what also sets us apart is that serving our community is part of our mission. Because of our generous donors, patrons and volunteers, we are also able to do the following, and we are grateful.” 1. Provide youth ages seven through high school free theatre training and performance opportunities with auditions open to everyone, and present five youth theatre shows annually at the HBHUSO/Community Arts Center 2. Provide the venue for the annual High School Students Art Exhibition and host the Official NC Azalea Festival Children’s Art Contest at the Community Arts Center 11. Present ARTfall Exhibition at the Community Arts Center, every September as part of American Craft Walk Wilmington 12. Present the Orange Street Arts Festival every year on Memorial Day weekend, a Wilmington tradition since 1995 “Additionally, our theatre community always steps up when needed,” said Habas. “We were scheduled to open Pippin on September 28, and our cast, crew and creative team were scattered due to Hurricane Florence. We knew the community would need some relief from the devastation, so decided that the show must go on. Everyone pulled together, and made it happen. And our Youth Theatre production of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland was cut short by Florence, and we were able to schedule some additional performances right after Florence to provide some respite and outlet for our children and parents. Everything we do is for, and because of, our community. We’re community theatre, after all!” For more information, go to www.thalian.org.

MEET THE SCHOOL FAMILIES

SPECIAL SECTION: Education Guide

Annabelle (5) & Asher Frederick (8) both children attend Myrtle Grove Christian School

Deklin Galvin, (4) Carolina Gymnastics Academy Gym and Learn Preschool

Why did you choose this school? This program has everything! Hands on learning, a daily gymnastics class, caring teachers all under one roof. There’s no other school like it in our area. Favorite extracurricular activities at school? He loves that they read a book to him every day before lunch he talks about the stories in school a lot, but if you ask him outright he’ll tell you he loves gymnastics class. Advice to prospective families? Go for it. The amount of growth we’ve seen in the 2 years Deklin has attended CGA I will be recommending this school for years to come. Favorite memory at school? Every year they release butterflies and ladybugs, he talked about that for month and still asks if they are going to do it again this year.

Why did you choose this school? MGCS has always been a special place to my family--my sister and I are both alumni and attended from preschool through eighth grade (along with several other family members). It has always been my hope that my children would attend. I was thrilled when I returned as a parent and found that the school still had the same heart and still felt like home. I was pleased to see familiar faces on staff. Some of my most beloved teachers are still there teaching, influencing and encouraging the next generation as they did for me years ago. MGCS provides a safe, loving environment with your child’s spiritual and academic development at their core. They place huge value on parent involvement and work alongside parents to instill values, character and academic success. The teachers truly get to know each and every student and their strengths and weaknesses. This allows them to focus on the best way to tailor each student’s individual learning style. It means so much to have teachers who pray for my children daily and have their best interest at heart. I’m blessed for the roots and foundation MGCS has provided me and continues to provide my children. It gives me so much joy to see my kids and my nephews walking the same halls that my sister and I did as little girls. Favorite extracurricular activities at school? Although there are several activities offered at school, my kids enjoy cardio kids running club the most--they run in the morning before school starts which helps get their energy out and wake them up! It is a great way to start their day. As an incentive, they love earning running feet for every mile they run! Advice to prospective families? Go visit MGCS! You will love all they have to offer. There are tuition assistance opportunities available also! Watching our children thrive and love school has been the best investment we have ever made. Favorite memory at school? Chapel performances, field trips, tribe day, service projects.. Favorite daily school activity? My children love the outdoor learning environment and the new STEM lab

Favorite daily school activity? Playing outside on the incredibly large and hands on play area they have back there for the kids.

Katarina (23), Christian (21), Savanna (20), Keefe (10), Oliver (9). St. Mark Catholic School All five of my children attend and/or have graduated from St.Mark. My oldest graduated from UNC last year & is returning from 1 year work in Australia, #2 is junior at UNC-Charlotte, #3 is sophomore UNC, #4 is 4th grade SMCS, #5 is 3rd grade SMCS school (featured in cover picture) Why did you choose this school? Exceptional academics in a loving Christian environment with plethora of athletics, performing arts, extracurricular activities & clubs that enhance development. Favorite extracurricular activities at school? All five of my children involved in athletics, school plays, after school programs. Oliver featured in cover picture enjoys Little Lions Basketball, Lego Club, ukulele club and aspires to Odyssey of the Mind & announcer on Lions Live (school TV show). Advice to prospective families? Spend a day shadowing and talk to other parents. Favorite memory at school? When his 3rd grade class put on Nativity Play for local retirement communities, he was an angel and loved seeing their smiling faces when they sang & handed out homemade cards. Favorite daily school activity? He enjoys Wednesday mass when the whole school is together & other all school events; also he loves being a “reading buddy” to younger kids.

Why did you choose this school? I believe that the independent and individualized nature of the Montessori method creates children who are confident, curious, and socially conscious. It is important to me that my children develop their own interests and talents at a pace that works for them. Montessori materials and lessons are all very hands on and students have a choice in what they work on each day. I love all the opportunities that Island Montessori offers to our children not only academically, but personally as well. Favorite extracurricular activities at school? My 1st grade son, Joshua, is able to take part in specials each day. His specials include Spanish, environmental education, music, art, and P.E. He is also taking part in two after school programs, a magic class and a Mini Monet art class. Advice to prospective families? This is a wonderful school where your child will learn to be a self-sufficient, confident, critical thinker who cares for others and the environment. With Montessori education, you must trust the process. The classrooms operate on a three-yearcycle and are multi-grade. Your child may not be learning the exact same things as other children in that grade, but by the end of the three-yearcycle, they will know what they need to know -- and much more! Favorite memory at school? Joshua said his favorite memory at Island Montessori was getting to cross the bridge at his kindergarten graduation ceremony last year and International Day where the children each select a country to learn about and then they help their parents make a dish from that country to share at a school-wide potluck. Favorite daily school activity? Joshua said he really enjoys P.E., Spanish, science activities and learning new works in class.

NEW PRODUCTS

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION EDITION I Resolve to Help My Family Appreciate Diversity….

I Resolve to Stay Healthy…. Sprayology

Sprayology was founded over ten years ago because of the needs of its founders who were dealing with physical disillusionment, aging, illness and a lack of natural options to help them live better. Founding sisters Patti Connell and Ellie Whalen believed at the core they were healthy, but were both taking multiple conventional medicines daily to deal with asthma, fatigue and stress. They realized that they were still not experiencing the health they were seeking. While searching for options they realized that homeopathy and natural products in general where not easy to understand, consistently effective or enjoyable to use. These experiences and their desire to modernize homeopathy led to the foundation of Sprayology. The sisters chose homeopathy as their daily option to become healthier because it is effective, safe, has no side effects and can be taken with other medicines. Sprayology Cold + Flu Relief temporarily relieves the symptoms of colds and flu including: • sinus congestion • achiness • chills • headache and fever It is recommended for people looking to relieve sinus congestion, fever, achiness, chills and cold-related headaches naturally. These can be found for $30.00 at www.pattiandricky.com

Worldwide Buddies Worldwide Buddies creates books, recipes, bilingual card games, and stuffed animals all geared for kids. They make perfect yearlong gifts for the children in your life. The company’s first collection is focused on our neighbor to the south. Young ones will learn about the Mexican celebration the Day of the Dead and why it’s so important to Mexicans. They’ll also learn about axolotl, a type of salamander that once thrived in Mexico and is now an endangered species. The whole idea is to help children develop a sense of fascination and interest in other cultures and help them realize just because someone’s different doesn’t mean they’re bad - that diversity is something to celebrate! Worldwide Buddies next focus is on China. January, they’ll be unveiling a new product to introduce kiddos to the Chinese culture! Worldwide Buddies is on a mission to blur the boundaries between us and them and teach children that diversity is indeed a wonderful thing. AFFORDABLE FAMILY SKI VACATIONS

amily ski vacations are tremendously popular, but nobody ever said they were cheap—especially when you start shelling out for lift tickets, lodging, food, equipment, and lessons. For families who love the white, powdery days, there is nothing better than a resort that lets you save some green. While a great many ski resorts offer free lift tickets for very young children (typically under age 5 or 6), some of the most family-friendly resorts also offer packages that include free lift tickets for older children in elementary or middle school. In addition, many states offer ski passports that let grade-school students ski and ride for free. Kids can apply online or through the mail and must provide proof of their current school grade. Typically, each passport is good for several free lift tickets at each participating ski resort. Here’s where to find “kids ski free” offers at ski destinations on the East Coast of North America for the 2018-2019 season. As always, be sure to read the fine print about qualifying kids’ ages, booking deadlines, minimum stays, and blackout dates. Source: www.tripsavvy.com

Designed to encourage all 5th and 6th graders to take the plunge and become skiers or snowboarders, this program makes it easy. Barry Rice, chairman of the school’s board of directors, said that Wilmington’s School of the Arts hopes to fulfill the needs of students not being met in many public schools. The school’s intent and plan is to fully integrate the core knowledge and the arts, music, theater, drama, and dance. The school, which will be K-2 with 300 students the first year and add a grade each year until it’s K-8 with about 900 students. The school plans to follow a standard course of study, but one of the big components is building a specific curriculum for them, not just a uniform curriculum for everybody in one classroom. The school will be open to any student in New Hanover, Pender, or Brunswick counties. Applications will be accepted for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade starting this January.
