T

his Mother’s Day I want to share with our readers one of my favorite quotes. “Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws.” - Barbara Kingsolver. We’ve heard of women defying the limitations of their own physical strength in order to save their child, but this quote meets me on a different level. The strength that motherhood requires is not one big burst of power that helps you push past a single moment. That is sometimes necessary, but most of motherhood requires a consistent, and occasionally increasing amount strength that does not seem possible. How many of us have heard the comment, “I don’t know how you do it?” I never know the answer. What mothers accomplish does not follow natural laws, we do it out of pure love, and that can not be explained.

May is leading the way for a summer filled with outdoor musical performances, and Airlie Gardens has unveiled its slate of musical performers for the 2016 Summer Concert Series. True to tradition, a concert will take place every first and third Friday of the month from May until September. The Summer Concert Series has grown to become a staple of summer fun in Wilmington. “We love seeing people of all ages enjoying great music in such a beautiful setting,” said Airlie Gardens’ Development Manager Janine Powell. According to Powell, “Every year the Concert Series grows, proving to us that families still value spreading out a blanket, eating yummy snacks, and enjoying good music on summer nights in Wilmington. So let the countdown begin!” Concerts are held from 6-8pm, and the 1st concert will be held on May 6th featuring Signal Fire. The full schedule for the 2016 Summer Concert Series, and ticket information can be found at www.airliegardens.org. Earth Day may be over, but for organizations like Cape Fear River Watch and supporters, every day is Earth Day. Whether you consider yourself a tree hugger, a nature lover or just someone who cares about the environment and healthy living, a great way to keep the earth healthy is to give back by volunteering, participating in outdoor learning or just getting out there. 1. Volunteer - Cape Fear River Watch holds a volunteer-based clean-up every second Saturday of the month. 2. Get Out There - Explore the magic of cypress creeks, untouched backwaters and the wildlife that inhabits these unique areas through Cape Fear River Watch’s Third Saturday Paddles. Visit the Greenfield Lake boathouse and talk to one of the volunteers about how you can get on the water there. 3. Outdoor Learning - Cape Fear River Watch offers nature tours (both on the water and by land) and other educational activities in collaboration with the City of Wilmington, Stormwater Services Division. Those programs are designed to provide hands-on knowledge of southeastern North Carolina plant and animal diversity, as well as water quality issues and are offered to groups of any size or age. Do you have the desire and a little extra time to help children in our community who need their voice heard? Over 500 children in New Hanover and Pender Counties entered the court system as victims of abuse and neglect – enough children to fill a typical elementary school twice. They are confused and sad and frightened. They need an advocate. Too often there are not enough volunteers to represent them all. Volunteers are needed to be the Voice for the Child. The Guardian ad Litem Program provides a powerful voice for abused, neglected, and dependent children in the NC state court system. A Guardian ad Litem volunteer represents and promotes the best interest of the child in court that ultimately ensures a safe, permanent home. Find out how you can be a Guardian ad Litem (An independent voice for children who enter the New Hanover and Pender Counties court system). For more information: call the Guardian ad Litem office at 343-5362, send an email to: lee.c.olson@nccourts.org, or visit www.CFGALA.org. If you are looking for another way to help children, an opportunity is available for families who are willing to open their homes to another culture! There is currently a rise in Chinese International Students coming to the Wilmington area to seek out High School diplomas from Cape Fear Academy. Contact Jennifer Fullagar at jfullagar@newoasisedu.com for more information about the benefits of becoming a host family to one of these students. They are currently seeking out several host families for about 5 Chinese students and growing rapidly. This would be a wonderful way for your family to learn how to make a global difference locally! Have a tip, lead, or just an interesting bit of news to share? I want to hear all about it! Send me an email to danielle.wilmingtonparent@gmail.com.

HALO SleepSack HALO SleepSack is a warm, cuddly, 3-way swaddle blanket that babies can’t kick off, ensuring your little one sleeps soundly throughout the night. Since 2005, the American Academy of Pediatrics has suggested the use of wearable blankets. HALO SleepSack products are used by hospitals to promote safe sleep, and by parents to help babies sleep safely from the start. The SleepSack is easy to use over regular sleepwear to take the place of loose blankets. There is also a helpful inverted zipper for easy diaper changes. There are 3 ways to use the swaddle blanket depending on your baby’s sleep style. Swaddle baby’s arms in to reduce the startle reflex, swaddle their hands-to-face for self-soothing or, one or both arms out for an easy and gentle transition to the SleepSack wearable blanket when it is time to stop swaddling.

Born To Be Wild I know most parents rely on the internet to discover new activities for kids. Buying an actual book seems very old school, but if there was ever a book to keep handy all year - Born to be Wild is the one.

In a world where we are surrounded by electronics and hectic schedules, it is easy to forget that there is always an adventure right outside your door. You don’t have to plan a trip or pitch a tent: Born To Be Wild (pub. date May 10th) is a surprisingly fun tool to get your family exploring and enjoying the natural world. Born To Be Wild contains easy-to-follow instructions for more than 250 free activities that encourage kids to put down the electronics and head outside—in any region and any season. The main reason I love this book is that all the activities require simple tools like string, scissors, and a little imagination. I love seeing kids use everyday objects including leaves, twigs, shells, sand, and mud for cheap family fun. Born To Be Wild is organized by season and then by material, letting you skip straight to “Spring” and pick an activity using “Blossom,” “Grass,” or “Bugs.” The activities are perfect for children 2 to 12. So next time you find your kids glued to a screen, head into the backyard or over to the park and: • Build a pinecone bird feeder • Collect seashells and driftwood to make a windchime • Start a caterpillar incubator in a jar • Build ice sculptures out of yogurt cups Along the way, author Hattie Garlick talks to families, organizations, cultures, and communities who have rebuilt their relationships with nature—with inspiring results—and introduces scientists, psychologists, and other experts who explain why nature matters in our children’s modern lives. The message of Born To Be Wild is simple: take your family outside and get lost in the fun of nature. v

Raising Kids who can Code

O

By Carolyn Jabs

ver 600,000 computing jobs are available in the US, but only 43,000 computer science majors graduated last year. That startling statistic from code.org may explain why 9 out of 10 parents want children to learn computer programming. Even kids who aren’t likely to choose programming as a career benefit from learning something about it. Coding teaches kids to analyze problems, think logically and be persistent about troubleshooting. Getting results also gives kids a sense of accomplishment and confidence that they can make technology work for them. Unfortunately, many K-12 schools don’t routinely offer coding classes. To correct that problem, the White House launched a CS for All Initiative earlier this year. Parents can find out about exemplary school programs at digitalpromise.org and discover local programs in the “Learn” section of code.org. You can also supplement what’s available at school with options like these:

Toys. Three dimensional playthings can teach kids the kind of logical sequencing that is at the heart of programming. Code-A-Pillar, coming soon from Fisher Price, is a caterpillar that does different things depending on how a toddler sequences its segments ( $50). Makerbloks.com sells domino size blocks that have different functions. Kids six and up can snap them together to tell stories or create devices like a burglar alarm or a voice changing microphone. ($125) Circuit Maze from thinkfun.com teaches kids to think logically about circuits with a series of 60 puzzles. ($40) Bots. Robots and droids can be fun for the entire family, but many models are expensive, delicate or tricky to operate. Exceptions include Dash and Dot (makewonder.com), freestanding, kid-friendly bots that can be controlled through an app. Sphero.com also sells several durable, rolling robots that will appeal to kids over 8, especially if they are Star Wars fans.

Apps. A wide variety of apps claim to teach coding to kids. Two of the better ones come from Hopscotch (gethopscotch.com) Their signature program lets school age kids use code to design games and create artwork. A simpler program called Daisy the Dinosaur is available for preschoolers. (Both free, Apple products. ). Kodable teaches coding practices by having 6-10 year olds maneuver furry, round aliens called Fuzzes through 30 increasingly difficult mazes by using visual arrow icons. (Free. Multiple platforms. Kodable.com) The Foos asks elementary age kids to help cute characters solve problems that just happen to involve coding skills such as pattern recognition and sequencing. (Free for most platforms. TheFoos. com) Lightbot is a slightly more abstract set of puzzles that can be addictive for older kids. (Free for most platforms. Lightbot.com) Hybrids. Several interesting programs teach code with a combination of tangible objects and apps. Bloxels has kids 8-12 create video games by inserting brightly colored blocks into a grid to create a pixellated image. Capture the image on a smart phone and an app helps you convert it into a game with characters and obstacles. (bloxelsbuilder.com) Bitsbox.com has a free website, but it also offers a subscription service for elementary school kids. Once a month, kids get a box of new programming challenges along with stickers, small toys and trading cards.

8 | May 2016 | Wilmington Parent

Clubs. Cs-first.com offers free modules that can be used in afterschool programs or summer camps. The materials are built around Scratch, a coding language devised at MIT (scratch.mit.edu) and are targeted to students in 4th-8th grade. All you need to start a club is a willing adult and access to one Internet-enabled device for each club member. Lessons. For children who develop a taste for coding, several organizations offer a more systematic way to become proficient. Code.org has links to “Hour of Code” projects that offer free one-hour tutorials introducing students to code. They also have a series of videos that help kids master basic algorithms and offer inspiration from master coders like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. Pluralsight, a company that provides online training to adults by subscription, offers several free classes for kids at pluralsight.com/ kids-courses. At Codeacademy.com, teens who are motivated can master several programming languages through free interactive lessons. Finally, Tynker.com, a program widely used by schools, offers over 1000 coding activities with kid appeal to families willing to pay a monthly subscription. Try the free apps, available for Android and Apple, before signing up. Camps. Summer is a great time to learn a new skill, and several camps will immerse kids in code. IDtech.com offers camps exploring a variety of technical topics at over 150 locations, including many campuses with prestigious CS programs. Their website makes it easy to find an experience that’s age appropriate for kids 7-18. The Emagination program intersperses lessons in coding with more traditional camp activities. Information about locations and programs, including a popular Minecraft session, is available at computercamps.com.

Just for Girls. In the past, boys gravitated towards programming more readily than girls. A number of organizations are trying to reverse that trend. Madewithcode.com, a Google initiative, features exciting coding projects developed by young women. Girlswhocode.com sponsors tech clubs and summer camps for girls. And Girldevelopit.com offers supportive womenonly classes in 52 US cities. Stuff around the House. CSunplugged.org promises to teach kids some of the basic concepts of computer science through games and puzzles that use inexpensive materials like cards, string, ping pong balls and crayons that are probably lying around your house. The site which is popular with educators includes downloads and videos explaining how to make use of the materials. With so many options available, every parent should be able to find a program or project that matches your child’s age and temperament as well as the family’s schedule and budget. So what are you waiting for? Get your kids coding now! v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., raised three computer savvy kids including one with special needs. She has been writing Growing Up Online for ten years and is about to publish a book called Cooperative Wisdom: Bringing People Together When Things Fall Apart. Six True Cliches About Motherhood A Letter to the Expectant Mama By Christa Melnyk Hines

D

ear Mom-to-Be,

Baby showers bring a host of instructions from seasoned moms and wellmeaning friends. As a new mom, I grew weary of hearing input like “sleep when the baby sleeps.” And, since I stubbornly refused to heed this sage advice, I suffered from sleep deprivation-induced splitting headaches as a result.

SPECIAL SECTION: Mother and Baby

As part of our global sisterhood, moms can relate to certain universal truths about motherhood, even as all of this advice starts to sound cliched. Here are a few truths that not only help with life in general, but with parenthood in particular.

“This too shall pass.” When you find yourself rocking a colicky baby at all hours, this comforting mantra is like a blinking light of hope beckoning you forward. In fact, I still whisper this oft-spoken phrase to myself in times of stress, and it hasn’t let me down yet. “The days are long, but the years are short.” When steering through a tearful toddler tirade or slogging through sick days, you’ll want for nothing more than the clock to skip ahead to a less exhausting time or place. When well-meaning individuals would tell me, “Enjoy these days--they go so fast,” I wanted to give them a swift kick in the derriere. But I understand why they said it. Those long days are quickly becoming bittersweet memories.

“Mother knows best.” Know your own heart and mind. I recall standing in line at the store with my two-week-old son who slept safe and sound in his baby carrier. “What a tiny baby,” said an elderly woman behind me. “How old is he?” When I told her, her voice hardened. “In my day, I wouldn’t have left the house until he was at least six weeks old.” As a sensitive new mom, admonishments like this bothered me despite following doctor’s recommendations.

“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” You’ll gain a new respect and appreciation for individuality and the word “quirky”. Many kids have curious interests. My son has loved cars since he was two. Not sexy sports cars, mind you. Cars like the 1988 Ford Taurus station wagon and the AMC Gremlin make his socks go up and down.

“No guts, no glory.” On especially exasperating days, you might fantasize about packing up and abandoning this motherhood mess you got yourself into. But you won’t run away. Children have the distinctive talent of breaking and repairing your heart daily. You won’t think twice about accepting their vise-like hugs and sloppy kisses. You’ll tuck sentimental notes away for safekeeping that sing your praises in childish scrawl, gussied up with stick people holding hands. “Put on your own oxygen mask first.” While pregnant with my son, my doctor and loved ones concerned themselves with how I was feeling. The minute my son arrived on the scene, he naturally became the center of our universe. I forgot how much I still needed to nourish my body and spirit if I was going to be an emotionally stable and healthy mother. As you prepare to dive into the thick of motherhood, you’ll find these sayings will gently assimilate themselves neatly among life’s forthcoming milestones, tragedies and triumphs. And sooner or later, you’ll turn to congratulate a new mom and out will pop the words you swore you’d never say, “Enjoy these days. They go so fast.” v Freelance writer, Christa Melnyk Hines is the mom of two boys. She is the author of Confidently Connected: A Mom’s Guide to a Satisfying Social Life, a resource for moms seeking asylum from isolation and an out-of-whack social life.

Mompetition … Don’t Play Along!

A

By Kerrie McLoughlin

ccording to UrbanDictionary.com, mompetition is “the one-up rivalry that moms play making their child seem better, smarter, and/ or more advanced than yours. May involve two or more moms and any number of children, even full-grown.” I like the “even fullgrown” part of that because it is so true. Ever see a couple of 60-something women comparing number of grandchildren and number of married children and their jobs? Oh, yes, it happens daily, and it has to stop. Here are some examples of mompetition, then some ways to handle it: • “My kid is only 12 and is almost an Eagle Scout. Congratulations on your 17-year-old Scout getting his Fingerprinting badge!” • “Yeah, we homeschool using XYZ curriculum, which costs $8,000 per year per kid, and we homeschool for about 8 hours a day. We’re on track for Harvard. You guys don’t seem to do a lot of homeschooling; what curriculum do you use?” (WTH? Just put the kids in private school for the same price and go run a small country or something, lady!) • “In the last school fundraiser, my kid sold $10,000 of wrapping paper and $5,000 of cookies to the diabetic lady down the road ALONE. All together we sold half a mil and SAVED this dang school. Thanks for writing the check and opting out. You must be really busy.” • “Wow, you really need a gray hair touch-up! When I get wrinkles like yours I am SO going for Botox. And are your boobs SUPPOSED to hang like that? I’m getting a reconstruction when I can save up.” (Yes, mompetition is also mom-to-mom combat, not just pitting kids against kids.) • “Shoot, I have to go. It’s time for 2-year-old Mitzy to go to her gymnastics competition, 5-year-old MooMoo to go to National Cheer Competition and 7-year-old Marky to go to his National LEGO Robotics high school age competition. What are you guys doing later?” • “Are you really going to let your kid eat that sucker full of red dye #3,729? You know he will be bouncing off the walls later, right? We only eat organic even though it’s more expensive. My husband and I decided we wanted the BEST for our kids so we don’t feed them junk.” Now let’s discuss how to handle these situations: • Smile and ignore the offender.

North Carolina’s kids need your love as a foster, foster-to-adopt or respite parent. Foster Parent training classes are forming now. To learn more, call (910) 202-9337.

• Answer any questions openly and honestly, being as real as possible. The other mom might learn how to behave from you and, thanks to you, might someday form real friendships not based on mutual competition. • Play along. This can be quite fun if you are able to keep a straight face. If a mom is griping about her daughter’s birthday Birkin bag being the wrong color, for instance, you could offer that your 4-year-old son has three similar such bags that are available for loan anytime. Wait for the look on her face, which will be priceless. Happy parenting! And remember, being a mom doesn’t have to be a competitive sport. v

Crib to Bed Transition By Breni Malpass

O

ne of the most common questions I hear from parents of toddlers is when should we move them to a bed? My answer is always, when they ask for it! Why do you think I say that? It’s very hard for children under the age of 3 to comprehend the rules associated with sleeping in a bed. Also, younger children do not have the impulse control of older children. While they may understand you when you say that they need to stay in their bed all night, they lack the ability to actually stay in bed. Many parents feel they “need” to transition from a crib to a bed for several reasons: correct poor sleep habits, pending arrival of sibling, or child is climbing out of their crib. Climbing out of the crib is probably the most common but is not necessarily a reason to transition early.

Slow down the Transition • There are a couple of tactics to try before moving your child to a bed. Try one or all of these tactics before transitioning your child too early. • Use a sleep sack. Children will have a harder time climbing in a sleep sack. • Lower the crib mattress to the lowest level and remove any objects/crib bumpers that could give your child a leg up to climbing. • Use your video monitor with a talk back function. As soon as your child attempts to climb, immediately say “NO”! You may have to do this several times but they will get the idea! Choose the type of bed. Will you move to a toddler bed, a twin, or straight to a double? This decision is entirely up to you. If you have a convertible crib, it may be easier just to remove the rail to “test the waters” so to speak. Toddler proofing the room. Even though we will want our child to stay in bed all night, the likelihood of that happening may be slim. We want their space to be safe so you will not have to worry about them hurting themselves at night. Hold a family sleep rules meeting. Be sure to sit down with your child before the move and explain what is happening, why it’s happening, and what the expectations are. They need to know

what they are expected to do and the consequences of not doing those things. Include the whole family in this meeting. Be consistent. Your children will only be as consistent as you are! It’s important that parents remain 100% consistent in enforcing the sleep rules and how they respond to a child that gets out of bed and leaves the room. There is no special age in which to move a child from their crib to a bed. Many parents tend to make the switch between the ages of 2 and 3. I encourage you to wait until as close to 3 years of age as possible. By waiting until they are old enough you will set both your child and your family up for success. Remember – If they ask for it, they are ready for it! v

How to Help a Mom on Bed Rest By Sarah Lyons

B

ed rest may sound nice to a busy mom. Who doesn’t dream of being told to lay around and watch TV and read all day? The answer will usually be a mom who actually has to be on bed rest. The novelty wears off very quickly and the reality of the struggle hits hard. If you would like to help a mom on bed rest, here are some ideas.

Coming Next Month...

Choices in Childcare

Visit the hospital. Hospital bed rest can be very lonely and a visitor can really brighten mom’s day. Offer to deliver fast food or homemade meals to her. A care package with movies, magazines, and treats is also nice when stuck in bed. mom may feel like she is letting down her older kids because she can not be her normal, active self. Driving the kids to school or activities is also a big help.

Stop by the store. Offer to pick up a few things the family needs if you will be out running errands. Many grocery stores now offer drive through pick up. Have the family order and pay for groceries online, then pick them up and deliver them.

Set up a train. If she is on bed rest for an extended amount of time, try setting up a meal train using websites like www.signupgenius. com or www.takethemameal.com. Discuss with the family the most convenient dates and times to deliver meals and solicit friends to fill all the open spots. Social media is a great place to recruit people you might not think to ask.

Help around the house. Sweep the floor, fold loads of laundry, vacuum, do dishes. Even a little bit of tidying up can make a big difference. Consider hiring a cleaning service for the family until mom is back on her feet. v Sarah Lyons spent five weeks on bed rest during her triplet pregnancy. She feels that even though it was a difficult time, it was worth it to let the babies continue to grow before their birth six weeks premature.

Diet’s Influence on Infertility By Dr. Chad Larson

I

nfertility was once seen as a woman’s reproductive problem. In the prefeminist world, motherhood proved a woman’s worth. This is no longer the case. Modern medical science and research have taught us that infertility affects both, men and women. Beyond that, we have also learned that the causes of infertility don’t start and end with the male and female reproductive systems. Among a vast number of root causes leading to infertility is diet. More specifically, sensitivities that your body has to certain foods can trigger an autoimmune response, causing devastating symptoms in your body, including inflammation, nutrient malabsorption and organ function abnormalities, just to name a few. Such conditions can negatively impact fertility for both men and women. Likewise, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. Many of the health issues associated with PCOS directly impact fertility due to the inflammatory response, which can be triggered by eating certain foods, especially if your body has sensitivities to them. While there are many foods that are likely to cause inflammation, there are also some that may help reduce inflammation, such as leafy green vegetables. As each person is molded differently, it is important to be aware of how different foods affect you as an individual.

Gluten and Infertility While there are many foods that cause inflammation and autoimmune reactivity, gluten is by far the number one culprit. Celiac disease, a digestive disorder caused by sensitivity to gluten, can cause

22 | May 2016 | Wilmington Parent

male infertility according to Mayo Clinic studies, which can be seen here - www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/male-infertility. While a gluten intolerance or sensitivity alone cannot directly cause infertility, the symptoms can. Inflammation in your gut can affect your reproductive organs or inhibit proper absorption of nutrients, which are needed for optimal sperm, egg and hormone production. Therefore, celiac disease and gluten sensitivities/reactivity can lead to infertility in both men and women. If you suspect you may have sensitivities or reactivity to foods, you can learn about Cyrex Laboratories Arrays 3 and 10 tests at www.joincyrex.com, and consult with your doctor about how to get tested. In the last decade, we have learned so much about the power of food and its ability to affect our health and well-being. There are so many factors that can cause infertility, leading many to a grueling journey of IVF procedures, drugs and the high costs associated with it all. But what if the solution to your fertility struggles was as simple as your diet and unknown sensitivities to certain foods? The solution could be a lot simpler than you anticipated! If infertility is a concern for yourself or someone you love, speak with a physician about how diet may impact infertility. v Dr. Chad Larson, NMD, DC, CCN, CSCS, Advisor and Consultant on Clinical Consulting Team for Cyrex Laboratories Dr. Larson holds a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Southern California University of Health Sciences. He is a Certified Clinical Nutritionist and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

Strength In Numbers By Mark Anderson

E

veryone is calling for American students to do better in math. Strength in Numbers Tutoring is doing something about it. To be sure, our teachers are doing their best to make that happen, but high school math teachers have too many kids – sometimes more than 30 per class.

That’s where Strength in Numbers Tutoring comes in as a non-profit founded in 2015 by a math teacher whose vision is to see every student graduate high school with number sense. That means students will understand numbers – which we expect will also mean they have done well in their math courses. Of course, doing well in school math increases self-confidence and employability. The Strength in Numbers vision also includes a strong foundation for every student in another area of numbers – money. You may have heard it said that the love of money is the root of all evil. We like to say that knowledge of money is the root of financial success. Again, this is where Strength in Numbers Tutoring comes in. The second component of the vision is to see every high school graduate with money sense.

Mark Anderson is a math teacher, tutor and founder/CEO of Strength in Numbers Tutoring, a newly established educational nonprofit founded to provide high-quality math tutoring to underserved but highly motivated high school students. Financial and other in-kind contributions are most welcome and are tax deductible even as the nonprofit’s 501c3 tax exempt status is pending approval.

That means the student understands money – which we hope will prepare them for the many financial decisions they will face in life after school. Doing well in “real-world math” increases financial stability. We all want students that will have strength in numbers. Strength from academic achievement in school math. Strength from financial knowledge. This combination will help students achieve better grades and a better future.

Hoggard Student Named State ACT College Readiness Scholar Dedreon “Dee” Davis, a senior in the STAE (Striving To Achieve Excellence) program at Hoggard High School, was recently named the ACT College Readiness Scholar for North Carolina. He was recognized at a special event as part of the fourth annual ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign. Only one exemplary student in each participating state received an academic scholarship from ACT. Dedreon will be now be considered for the ACT national scholarship award in June 2016. “Dee exemplifies the ACT college readiness award because he set a goal of college acceptance and did not give up until he achieved his goal. He planned strategies, and despite some setbacks and struggles, he worked hard and kept his focus on his dream. He utilized the resources of the STAE program, taking advantage of tutoring support to ensure success in honors and AP level classes. He took the ACT a second time, striving to post his best score for college admission and scholarship consideration,” said Catherine Coleman, English Teacher and S.T.A.E. Coordinator at Hoggard. Dedreon is planning for a career in business marketing. He has been accepted to multiple schools and plans to attend Winston-Salem State University in the fall.
