Got any plans for the 4th of July? Celebrate Independence Day with Thalian Association Community Theatre at the Hannah Block Historic USO / Community Arts Center Open House. The public is invited to come between 1:00 – 6:00pm when staff will be in 1940’s era costumes, serving free coffee & doughnuts courtesy of Krispy Kreme. For one day only sodas will return to the WWII price of five cents. Enjoy the day while learning about the music and movement of the 1940’s with the Cape Fear Swing Dance Society as they offer free lessons for the popular dances of the era including, the Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing and the Collegiate Shag. Lessons are scheduled for 2pm and 4pm in the building lobby with the Home Front Heritage Museum, featuring 1943 replica furnishings and WWII exhibits. The 5-minute documentary film Home Away From Home – the USO at 2nd and Orange will also be shown all afternoon.
Use your free time this summer to enhance your family’s artistic knowledge. UNCW Presents is delighted to share a series of programs for families called SEAHAWK Family Arts Matinees, or SEAHAWK FAM for short. The series continues throughout the month of July with $5 performances on Thursday mornings, designed as a creative and entertaining respite from the summer heat. These special one-hour performances will be held in UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium. July 5th, 19th, and 26th performances are sensory friendly! Poppy’s Summer Movie Magic is underway, and kids can see a movie at The Pointe for only $1! Movies are shown every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10am. Wrightsville Beach Museum is expanding, and with that expansion they hope to offer more activities for kids. This summer they have started a weekly club just for kids. Kids Club is a series of free kids events every Wednesday from through August. They are educational events with a different theme each week, all held at the museum at 10:30am. In July they will teach visitors about jellyfish, making old fashioned lemonade, and using equipment from 1880’s and 1920’s to make applesauce. Magnaframe This frame building system is easy to use, and it finally gives you an excuse to hang up all those photos from your phone and social media. ALL MONTH LONG! Airlie Gardens Gnome Invasion Daily, through 10/28. For the sixth year in a row Airlie Gardens, is excited to host their summer art exhibit! Airlie Gardens has selected artists or teams of artists to decorate, paint, and otherwise adorn one of the 15 oversized 5-foot-tall fiberglass Garden Gnome models. These Garden Gnomes will be placed throughout the grounds for guests to enjoy as part of their garden experience. The hope for this outdoor exhibit is it will be a collection that appeals to all. The artist’s design has been selected based on creativity, craftsmanship, use of materials, the ability to appeal to all age groups, outdoor sustainability and durability. Summer Reading Daily, through 8/18. Children ages birth -18 can visit any of the four NHC public libraries to receive an official summer reading bag with a bookmark, reading log, stickers and prize coupons while supplies last. Visit the library often for books & programs. Play Time! Daily, through 9/1/18. Cape Fear Museum presents Play Time!, an exhibit that explores how we play, create, and use our imagination as children and adults. The display includes items from the museum’s historic toy collection and hands-on activities ranging from creating art to playing dress-up.

or millions of families around the country, braces and childhood tend to go hand-in-hand. This leaves many moms with lots of questions about what life with braces will be like for their child. Common questions range from when kids should first see the orthodontist to what types of food are off limits. The more parents know what to expect, the less they will fear the process, and be able to help their children enjoy and get the most out of their treatment experience. Here are some of the things that every mom must know before their child gets braces:
Age. Many people are unsure when a child should see an orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist no later than the age of seven. Straightness. Even children who have straight teeth should still be evaluated by an orthodontist. There may be a problem with their teeth that can be detected by the doctor. Early treatment helps to guide proper jaw growth, correct harmful habits, and help guide teeth, and even shape one’s face. Cost. With an average cost for metal braces being around $5,000- $7,500, many parents may feel they can’t afford the treatment. However, some orthodontist offices offer payment plans, making it worthwhile to check into what options are available. There are various types of braces available, so discuss them with the orthodontist to determine the best one for your child and invest in their future smile.
Clean teeth. If your child’s teeth aren’t sufficiently clean before getting braces, your orthodontist will have to clean them with a polishing paste so that the braces can properly be cemented to your teeth. If possible, schedule a regular professional cleaning appointment with your dentist a few days before you get your new braces so the teeth will be plaque-free prior to your braces appointment. Then, brushing with a high fluoride toothpaste — along with flossing and gargling mouthwash before your appointment — can help make you feel more confident and will speed things along with the orthodontist.
Expect discomfort. Getting braces is going to create some discomfort, especially once your child first gets them. They can cause sores in the mouth. To help, choose soft foods, such as soup, pasta and bananas for the few days following getting braces. If there is still a high level of discomfort after a few days and it doesn’t go away with ibuprofen or acetaminophen, call the orthodontist. Regular care. Talk to your orthodontist about proper care of your braces. You’ll need to brush regularly and use a Waterpik to flush out the food particles that can get caught between braces and teeth; you should also avoid sticky foods. With proper care and by seeing your orthodontist regularly for checkups, you can keep your teeth healthy while your braces are in place. Foods. There are some foods that should be avoided when having braces, because they tend to get caught. These include chewy foods, crunchy foods, sticky foods, and hard foods. Specific foods to avoid include sticky peanut butter, popcorn, caramel, taffy, and gum. Also, things you have to bite into, such as an apple or corn on the cob. Choosing a doctor. Opt for an orthodontist, since they are specialists in straightening teeth and have had two to three years of additional training beyond dental school. v

uring your baby’s first year, you’re going to be spending quite a bit of time with your child’s healthcare provider. Take steps before your baby arrives to choose a doctor who you feel comfortable with and trust.
When should you start the process? Anywhere between one and three months before your due date is an ideal time to start shopping around for a pediatrician or a family physician. Try not to wait until the last minute.

Here are the primary differences between the two types of physicians: A family practice doctor is trained to provide healthcare to individuals at all stages of life, from newborn to senior. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, family physicians train for three years in real-life clinical settings and are trained in all areas of medicine ranging from pediatrics and internal medicine to obstetrics. A pediatrician specializes specifically in childhood conditions, diseases and treatment for patients from newborn to age 18. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), following medical school, a pediatrician-in-training completes three or more years of courses focused entirely on pediatrics.

We are lucky enough to have National Parks nestled high in the mountains surrounding our state. These beautifully preserved gems are filled with activities that everyone in the family can enjoy. The good news is that you do not have to venture deep into the woods in the mountains and spend your vacation off the grid in order to enjoy these national treasures. Near every National Park are adorable little towns that offer their own unique culture, and a homebase nearby so you can stay in comfort while still enjoying the wilderness. Here are a few to get you started on your next family adventure!
Great Smoky Mountains National Park Seiverville, TN Sevierville is a city in east Tennessee. To the south, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is only about 20 minutes away and has forest trails, wildlife, and waterfalls. Close enough to some bigger attractions like, Dollywood and Pigeon Forge, but far enough away that you can avoid the crowds, you will find a little something for everyone. Townsend, TN This quiet little town only has 500 residents and has one of the 3 official entrances to the national park, but it’s the least busy entrance. The Townsend area is known for being quiet and fairly lowkey. Generally people who visit Townsend are looking to spend a lot of time outdoors, hiking, fishing, horseback riding and more. There are several inexpensive restaurants and businesses in the Townsend area as well as a lot of fun outdoor things to do.
Shenandoah National Park Berryville, VA Located in the northern part of the Shenandoah Valley, Berryville is a small community with an historic downtown area and quaint main street. The town is surrounded by beautiful rolling hills and countryside. The nearby Holy Cross Abbey is where monks sell fruitcakes, honey and chocolate truffles. The Shenandoah National Park’s northern entrance is a little more than a 20 minute drive, and offers miles of trails, rocky outcrops, wildlife, and adventure! Luray, VA Although this town is moments from one of the best National Parks, it is known for Luray Caverns, a vast underground cave system with walkways, unusual rock formations and the Great Stalacpipe Organ, which makes the stalactites “sing.” This is one of those towns that you can spend days exploring without stepping foot in the woods. Nearby, the Luray Valley Museum features recreated 19th-century buildings. The Car and Carriage Caravan Museum shows vintage vehicles. To the southeast, Lake Arrowhead Park has a beach and nature trail. v

W
ith July being National Blueberry Month I thought it would be fun to come up with as many blueberry-loving ideas as I could. After all, what’s not to love about this indigenous flowering plant? Here are a few kid-friendly ideas for all things blueberry.
1. Blueberry Pickin’ Patch – Kids love anything hands-on. Set a date, load the kids in the car and show them first-hand where to get this delicious fruit. 2. Blueberry Pancakes – It’s Sunday morning and your family is waking up to the smell of delicious blueberry pancakes sizzling on the griddle. If they want to help, drop the batter on the griddle and let your kiddos plop blueberries in the batter (with supervision, of course). This healthy, yummy breakfast will be sure to satisfy everyone’s appetites.
3. Teething Secret – Do you have a little one? A great tip for teething tots is to freeze a container of blueberries and let them gnaw on them one at a time for instant relief. 4. Flavored Water – Add a little oomph to your water and throw in a couple of blueberries for more flavor. 5. Smoothies – Add fresh blueberries to your smoothie for added antioxidants or better yet, add frozen blueberries with or without ice to get that extra icy texture. 6. Connect the Blueberries – Get a pint of blueberries and arrange them one-by-one on a piece of construction paper to create a shape (example: circle). Have your child eat the blueberries as he picks them up to drawn a line where the blueberry was. When all of the blueberries are gone, your child has had a healthy snack and he’s learned how to create art out of something edible. 7. Ice Cubes – Fill up your ice cube tray and let your kids put one or two blueberries in each cubicle. Put them in the freezer and voila! Throw them in your next glass of water and now you have a pretty and yummy drink.
8. Fun Facts – Let school-aged children get on the computer and see how many facts they can find about blueberries. This is a great way to teach them about taking something from the environment and picking it up apart to learn all that they can. Be sure to try some of these ideas for National Blueberry Month. Your kids will have a blast learning about all things blueberries and you’ll feel good knowing that they’re eating a healthy and nutritious fruit. v

Road Trip With Your Furry Kids Plan ahead. There are probably a few pet-friendly restaurant patios, hotels and even shops along your route, but they aren’t always easy to find. Sometimes you must call a business to find out if pets are allowed, and if so, if there are any size restrictions or fees associated with including them.
Ask for special pet treats. Some restaurants cater to pets on-the-go with treats like “pupuccinos,” plain hamburger patties and more. Just ask, you might be surprised by what’s out there! (Pro tip: be cautious with sensitive tummies and skip the treats if your dog is prone to car sickness!)
Pack some familiar dog stuff. Make your dog feel at home away from home by packing his favorite dog bed, blanket, chew bone, food/water bowls and toys. Plan pet breaks. Remember, your pets need breaks from the car, too. Find a dog park along your route where your pet can play or take a walk around a public park during your pit stop to make long car rides more bearable. (Pro tip: keep the clean-up bags handy!)
Keep their meal schedule consistent. Even on the road, you’ll want to keep your pet’s feeding schedule consistent. That means packing a bag that’s easily accessible with food, water and bowls.

LIFE·LOVE·DOGS LIFE·LOVE·DOGS is a documentary series exploring the deep bonds between people and dogs, and how these bonds, through “mutual rescue,” benefit man and dog. Their mission is to inspire, move and connect with enthusiastic dog lovers through in-depth, beautifully produced stories. LIFE·LOVE·DOGS is being produced by renowned filmmakers, and is already building a large social media following as well as support from a community of dog lovers, rescue groups, and K9 owners and trainers. LIFE·LOVE·DOGS is the pilot for a documentary series. Each episode (running between 59-62 minutes) will feature 3-4 stories of different lengths, about the bond we share with our dogs with an underlying theme that connects the tales. Their first episode comprises three stories about mutual rescue, exploring universal themes of friendship and loss, as well as overcoming life’s challenges such as a disease as indiscriminate as cancer or the misunderstood diagnosis of PTSD. The faithful and unquestioning friendship of dogs can crack the thickest of walls and these stories will surely move many hearts. Bear was adopted when he was 12 weeks old when his owners unexpectedly had to move out of the country. Since then, he has been by his family’s side to welcome 2 new kiddos into their family, Dominick (age 4) and Brooklyn (age 1.5) and he hasn’t left their sides since. Bear made it his job to protect his babies and refused to sleep when his daddy was working and would fall asleep the second he walked through the door. Brooklyn is Bear’s best friend. They are always together and she makes a point to make sure he gets plenty of hugs every day. He loves his tiny humans and even though he is getting older (7 years old) and slowing down a bit, he will always make time to play with them or get in their way while they are trying to swing... he is 160 lbs after all.

MENTAL ILLNESS IS BIOLOGICALLY BASED:
IT’S TIME TO END THE STIGMA N

early one in five American adults experience mental illness in any given year according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Unfortunately, people with mental illness experience a high degree of stigma. Part of the problem lies in that although mental illness often has biological and genetic roots, it’s still classified under the field of psychology. Because psychology is defined as the study of human ‘behavior’, people see it as indicative of personality flaws or learned behavior and that a person should be able to just ‘snap out of it’.
with BD, delusions and hallucinations accompany mania. Bipolar is highly treatable, though some people experience treatment resistance. Also, during manic episodes, people with BD are typically unable to recognize their illness. Left untreated, it can be a very debilitating disease. Some celebrities known to have bipolar disorder are Demi Lovato, Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, Carrie Fisher, and Sinead O’Connor.
Many experts and advocates recognize this problem and are calling for biologically-based brain diseases to be reclassified into more appropriate fields of medicine like neurology. Such a move would go a long way toward reducing stigma. When people with a mental illness brave coming out and telling their personal stories, slowly but surely, more people hear the message. It seems the public is more receptive when admired celebrities share their trials and tribulations, or when we tragically lose one to suicide. The following are the more serious mental illnesses as well as some of the celebrities who’ve been diagnosed with each condition.
compulsions, obsessions are most commonly in the form of fear of contamination or harm to self or others, excessive concern with order or bodily symptoms, or intrusive religious thoughts. In turn, those afflicted with OCD act out compulsions to alleviate their fears or thoughts. This is done through repeated acts of checking, organizing, washing, or senseless acts of tapping, counting, or repeating words. David Beckham, Marc Summers, Howie Mandel, and Fiona Apple are known to suffer from OCD.
Major depressive disorder (MDD). Unlike the occasional sadness or blues many people experience, MDD is a persistent low mood that interrupts daily living. Symptoms include changes in appetite and sleep, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities, and ruminations about death and suicide sometimes accompanied by suicide attempts. Some people with MDD might experience a single bout. Yet for others, it’s chronic. Fortunately, antidepressants are quite effective for most people. Though some are treatment-resistant leading to long-term disability. Ashley Judd, Owen Wilson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Heath Ledger, and Winona Ryder are among the many celebrities who’ve battled major depressive disorder.
Bipolar disorder (BD). This disorder is marked by emotional extremes ranging from depressive symptoms, as described above, to mania or hypomania. During manic episodes, sufferers experience a decreased need for sleep, extremely elevated mood, increased energy or agitation, are easily distracted, have racing thoughts and take foolish risks. For some

Panic disorder. With this disorder, people experience sudden and repeated bouts of extreme fear that lasts at least several minutes if not longer. The symptoms include shortness of breath, racing heart, trembling, weakness, dizziness, chest pain, tingling or numbing of hands, stomach pain, nausea, or fear of dying, being out of control or impending doom, to name a few. Panic disorder often results in avoidance of things or places where attacks have previously taken place. Though it’s unclear whether the following celebrities have been diagnosed with panic disorder, they’re known for experiencing panic attacks: Johnny Depp, Princess Diana, John Mayer, and Emma Stone. There are numerous other mental disorders that afflict millions of Americans as well. Other depressive disorders, dissociative identity disorder, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and attention deficit disorder are but a few. The Battle for Independence 5K and 1-Mile Run at The Pointe at Barclay in Wilmington, features a 4th of July celebration race with awards for kids, military, and first-responders. The Walking Tour of the Historic Carolina Beach Boardwalk is led by members of the Federal Point Historic Preservation Society. Held on July 3rd at 10am, this is a great way to get moving while learning Interesting facts about the birth of the Shag, a movie theater called The Wave, the origins of Britt’s Donuts, and the largest dance floor south of Washington, DC. The tour begins at the Chamber of Commerce kiosk just south of the new Hampton Inn. The best place to park (fee charged) is in the municipal lot (between Harper Ave. and Carl Winner Ave.) just behind the Hampton Inn. The Society requests a $5 donation to be used in future exhibits at the Federal Point History Center.

SCHOOL NOTES WordMasters Challenge Perfect Score Jamie McKinney, a fifth grade student at Ogden Elementary School, recently competed in the difficult Blue Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, earning a perfect score of 20 on the challenge. Nationally, only 60 fifth graders achieved this result. WordMasters Challenge™ is a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. Also achieving outstanding results was a fellow fifth grader, Kiley Canter. The students were coached in preparation for the WordMasters Challenge™ by Mrs. Jenny Leeds. The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogysolving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge™ materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight. They are particularly well suited for children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies. The WordMasters Challenge™ program is administered by a company based in Indianapolis, Indiana, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools. St. Paul’s Donates to Give Five - Read Five St Paul’s United Methodist Church donated money and books to the Give 5 Read 5 book program at Carolina Beach Elementary. Thanks to their generosity, students will be able to continue reading this summer with their new book choices. Thanks to the annual statewide Give Five – Read Five campaign and related local efforts, North Carolina students have received more than 946,000 new and gently-used books to take home to read over the summer and keep forever. The partnership between the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and myON, a division of Capstone allow students to receive books from local drives and they have access to thousands of digital book titles that can be downloaded for free over the summer through the myON Reader online literacy tool.
Battle of the Books Winner New Hanover County Schools recently held its annual Elementary School Battle of Books (BOB) competition at the Northeast New Hanover County Public Library. It was an exciting competition among the 23 elementary schools participating, with the Carolina Beach Elementary School (CBES) team coming in first place. The Carolina Beach team members are Skylar Santucci, Makaila Baker-Gray, Chloe Monk, Alaina Boos, Alexa Crace, Kieran Bradley, Quinn Womble, Jack Hanson, Hunter Houle, and Payton Autry. The team is coached by CBES Librarian Celesta Woodard. The NHCS Elementary BOB Competition was coordinated by Donna Sloan, Academically/Intellectual Gifted (AIG) Supervisor. “To have around 200 students from 23 elementary schools all in one room demonstrating their passion for reading is an educator’s dream come true. The energy and excitement at the Battle of the Books competition is contagious,” Mrs. Sloan stated.
