EDITOR’S NOTE

T

he new year hasn’t even started, but fresh, exciting changes have already begun! Wilmington Parent magazine has treated itself to a full makeover. A new section full of Things to Do that is easier to find exactly what you are looking for can be found where you would normally see our calendar. Local News and information about what is happening in the Cape Fear Region is available from cover to cover. Also, don’t miss the personal favorites, recommendations, and recipes for the holidays from your hard working staff here at Wilmington Parent! We are so excited about the new direction of the magazine, and we hope you love it! I hope everyone is finding hope and recovery this holiday season. After Hurricane Flo took so much, yet reminded us how much we have to be thankful for in this community, I wish nothing but refreshing memories and peaceful moments for the upcoming holidays. Next month, we will start a new year, with new challenges that we now know our community will face together. We have an amazing group of citizens in this area and I am proud and grateful to call this home. Come back next month for more changes and our highly anticipated Education Issue with expanded local tips and guidance for finding the best educational opportunities for your whole family. Peace, Love, and Happy Holidays!

LOCAL NEWS

Foster Parents Needed The Arc of North Carolina’s Foster Care program provides children with a nurturing family setting in which to grow and hopefully achieve successful family reunification. Its therapeutic foster care program involves a child that has a higher level of care need, due to psychiatric, medical, and behavioral needs. Therapeutic foster parents require more training than family foster care and are required to have ongoing trainings related to therapeutic foster care to maintain their skills and demonstrate best practice. If interested, please contact Melissa Lawson at (910) 465-8123.

Earth Fare Opens Earth Fare on Military Cutoff, across from Mayfaire opened its doors in November. There are a few things about this store that stand out as different from other health food stores in the area. First, not everything in Earth Fare is organic, but there is a list of standards all products must meet before they are carried in the store. Earth Fare has a “boot list” of chemicals. All products sold are promised to be free of artificial sweeteners, artificial preservatives, artificial colors, artificial flavors, have no bleached four or bromated flour, no artificial fats or trans fats, no synthetic growth hormones and no high fructose corn syrup. If you spot a “booted” ingredient on a product in the store, you get a $50 gift card. All foods with “organic” labels also follow a certain set of standards, including the percentages of organic ingredients within an organic product. Among the meats and seafood, customers can expect all livestock was treated humanely and all meats labeled “antibiotic free” follow of a “never ever” rule. The ‘never ever’ guarantee means antibiotics were never introduced to the animal at any point during their life.

Teen Art Contest The New Hanover County Public Library wants to showcase one talented teen’s art for the next Cape Fear Fandom Faire! The contest is open to anyone between the ages of 13 and 18 who is a resident of NHC, or who goes to school in NHC. Artwork from any fandom will be considered. Submit your work by 5 p.m. on Friday, December 7, 2018. Call or email Shannon Vaughn for an entry form: 910-798-6379 svaughn@nhcgov.com

Second, They are really big on bulk foods. Walk right in the store and find several sections of bulk foods. Grab a paper bag (or bring a container from home to reduce waste) and fill up on beans, seeds, grains, rices and dozens of other items which take up an entire wall. Earth Fare also offers bulk liquids like apple cider vinegar, olive oil, blue agave nectar and several others. Grind up nut butters yourself and buy loose leaf teas and spices, as well. Only need two tablespoons of a foreign spice for a recipe? Earth Fare allows customers to buy however much is necessary. Another thing, They use clean water. Not only is produce vetted to be “clean” from harmful pesticides and chemicals, but it is protected in-store as well. The misters for produce use water from a reverse osmosis system so that no harmful chemicals are in play. The same standards go for the water used in the prepared foods sections. So salads and foods made with water in-store are made from clean, filtered water.

he holiday season is packed full of deals, some too good to pass up (or so we think)! Women’s Trendy Apparel: Shirts with ruffle overload and sleeve cutouts are a definite gift DON’T. Same goes for bedazzled booties.

Lego Sets: Any parent knows that picking up up hundreds of tiny lego pieces totally blows. End of story.

Small Hand Tools: Could there be anything more boring than a tape measure? I mean, unless it’s personalized with a monogram and favorite colors, it’s probably going back to the hardware store. Note: tape measures have made the list for two years running.

Dolls (the creepy lifelike ones): You know, the ones that blink and crawl and do the potty dance. Little girls around the world have spoken: they’d rather play with trucks.

Transfer dough to refrigerator and chill for at least 2-3. Preheat oven to 350F (175C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Generously dust a clean surface with flour and deposit one chilled cookie dough disk onto the surface. Lightly flour dough and roll out to 1/8”. Continue to add flour as needed both on top of and beneath the dough so that it doesn’t stick. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes, transfer shapes to baking sheet. Bake on 350F for 9-10 minutes. Allow cookies to cool completely before moving and frosting. Sugar Cookie Frosting Combine sugar, 2 Tablespoons of milk, corn syrup, and vanilla extract and stir until combined. If frosting is too thick, add more milk, about a teaspoon at a time. If you accidentally add too much milk, add powdered sugar until desired texture is reached. If coloring the frosting, divide into bowls and color as desired at this point. Transfer frosting to a piping bag with a piping tip or place in a Ziploc bag and snip a small piece of the corner off. Pipe frosting on cookies and decorate with decorative candies, if desired.

Danielle: Christmas Bark Ingredients 40 salted saltine crackers or enough to line your pan 1 cup unsalted butter 1 cup packed brown sugar 2 cups milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips ¾ cup chopped pecans (optional)

Andrea: Potato Candy

Keith: Creme Brulee

Ingredients 1 medium baked potato 2lb bag powdered sugar 1 tsp. Vanilla 1/2 tsp. Salt

Ingredients 1 quart heavy cream 1 vanilla bean, split and scraped 1 cup vanilla sugar, divided 6 large egg yolks 2 quarts hot water

Directions Bake potato. Peel and mash to get 1/2 cup of potato. Add salt and vanilla. Work in sugar until dough can be handled easily. Divide dough into half. Roll out dough onto waxed paper to 1/4 inch thick. Spread with peanut butter. Roll up jelly roll style. Chill until firm. Slice before serving.

www.wilmingtonparent.com

Ingredients 1 cup soft butter ½ cup sifted confectioners sugar 1 tsp vanilla 2 ¼ cup flour ¼ tsp salt ¾ cup finely chopped walnuts Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix butter, sugar, and vanilla thoroughly. Sift together flour and salt, stir in. Mix in nuts. Chill dough. Roll dough into 1” balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes. While still warm, roll in confectioners sugar. Cool. Roll in confectioners sugar again.

Directions Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Place the cream, vanilla bean and its pulp into a medium saucepan set over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat, cover and allow to sit for 15 minutes. Remove the vanilla bean and reserve for another use. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup sugar and the egg yolks until well blended and it just starts to lighten in color. Add the cream a little at a time, stirring continually. Pour the liquid into 6 (7 to 8-ounce) ramekins. Place the ramekins into a large cake pan or roasting pan. Pour enough hot water into the pan to come halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Bake just until the creme brulee is set, but still trembling in the center, approximately 40 to 45 minutes. Remove the ramekins from the roasting pan and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to 3 days. Remove the creme brulee from the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes prior to browning the sugar on top. Divide the remaining 1/2 cup vanilla sugar equally among the 6 dishes and spread evenly on top. Using a torch, melt the sugar and form a crispy top. Allow the creme brulee to sit for at least 5 minutes before serving.
