his month is dedicated to all the mothers! Moms deserve to be appreciated every month of the year, but it’s still nice to take a moment to pause and reflect on all our moms do for us every day. May’s special section specifically focuses on the new mommies out there, whether you are still awaiting your bundle of love, or you are fervently trying to figure out how you will make it through the whole first year of your baby’s life with no sleep. This section will give you the guidance you need. In respect to sleep, we have on pg.24 an article from a local sleep specialist that gives you some insight into what you may expect with a newborn’s sleep patterns.

For those of us who have been raising kids for quite a few years now, you may have other concerns this month….end of grade testing. This can be a stressful time, and maybe you did not realize that there are options when it comes to testing. On pg.7 you will find information about opting out of end of grade tests and what that will mean for your family. Remember, being a mom is a constant experiment. Nothing will be perfect, and it helps the whole family when you demonstrate and teach flexibility. The article on pg.21 is a good place to look for other ways we can release a few worries and learn to live in the moment. I truly wish all the moms out there all the best this month and for the rest of the year. We are all on this adventure together, so let’s look out for one another on the journey!

HAVE YOU HEARD….? Strawberry season has begun, and in Wilmington that is an important time! Most families I know have a yearly tradition that includes strawberry picking, ice cream and strawberry shortcake. Our family tends to make multiple visits to the strawberry fields for a refill of our empty buckets. This year, above normal winter temperatures and early-spring frosts threatened to devastate the crops, but the North Carolina Strawberry Association announced that an abundance of fruits ready to be picked! If your family has yet to taste these local sweet treats, Lewis Farms is open Monday-Saturday 9am-6pm and Sunday 1-6pm. If you want to visit another NC farm, visit www.NCstrawberry.com for more locations.

Besides strawberry season, there are other things to celebrate this month. Memorial Day is May 29th and the 52nd Annual Memorial Day Observance at the Battleship North Carolina at 5pm in Wilmington is a chance to remember those who gave their lives in service to the USA. The event features a military guest speaker, a 21-gun salute, taps, and more.

With the school year ending, some families are beginning to plan for next year. While thinking about the opportunities available for your children, perhaps your family would like to consider offering an opportunity to another child. New Oasis International Education and Cape Fear Academy are on the search for new host families for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year for four exchange students. Hosting an International Student can have a wonderful and culturally impressive impact on host families and the community. If you would like to find out more about being a host family, email jfullagar@ newoasisedu.com.

Another way to help families in the upcoming school year is to donate school supplies to local students in need. The Children’s Museum of Wilmington is pairing up with Winter Park Elementary School for a school supplies drive. Throughout the month of July the museum will be collecting pens, pencils, markers, and any new school supplies to donate. Although discounted admission will be offered during the month of July to anyone bringing in school supplies, they encourage families to start collecting now for this popular summer event! Call 254-3534 for more details.

Getting a Grip on the Internet of Things

I

By Carolyn Jabs

t’s no secret that things are getting smarter. Devices let parents check in on sleeping babies and keep track of children when they are away from home. Home management systems turn on lights, lock doors and monitor use of water or electricity. Entertainment apps notice what we like so they can offer similar products. Even little kids have apps and toys that learn their preferences by interacting with them. Taken together, all these smart, app-driven devices are called the Internet of Things (IoT). By 2020, there will be 50 billion of these intelligent devices according to one report from the Federal Trade Commission (tinyurl.com/IoTpolicy). Proponents promise that this technology will integrate seamlessly into our lives, anticipating our needs and simplifying many chores. Beguiling as that scenario is, it comes with a price. All of these devices are “smart” because they are collecting information about our families—what we like, where we go, what we do and even what we say. It’s not paranoid to wonder who has access to all that information. The first line of defense is purchasing from reputable companies that make the extra effort to build security into their products. Before buying anything that claims to be smart, find out whether there is a procedure for updating security if the device is hacked. Second, figure out exactly what information the device collects. Devices and the apps that run them often sweep up information that isn’t essential for their mission. A step counter, for example, needs to keep track of how many steps you took, but not necessarily where you went. Give permission only for information needed to make the device functional. Third, understand what use is made of the information. Many companies collect anonymous information to spot trends that help them improve their products. Some companies use data to determine what you like so they can recommend other things you might want to buy. And some companies share information with government agencies or sell it to other unrelated companies. Depending on the situation, these policies may seem perfectly OK or highly intrusive. You can’t make an informed decision unless you understand the company’s policy. Hacking, of course, is a risk even for products purchased from a reliable company that handles information responsibly. Many security experts are concerned that the Internet of Things is highly vulnerable to manipulation. Unlike computers and cellphones which come with elaborate security systems and update procedures, devices are not required to have protection. As a result, they may give hackers backdoor access to wireless systems and sensitive data on cellphones and computers. Consumers can defend themselves by taking these precautions.

Install updates. Hackers are constantly testing systems to see if they are vulnerable. Responsible companies develop fixes as soon as they are aware of problems, but those solutions won’t help if you don’t install updates. Keep track of the smart devices your family uses. Set up software so updates are downloaded automatically if possible. Or designate one day a month as Security Day. Log into the apps and websites that control your smart devices and install any updates. Delete apps controlling devices that aren’t being used. 6 | May 2017 | Wilmington Parent

Take passwords seriously. Many experts recommend a unique password for each device. That way, even if one device is compromised, hackers won’t have access to other information. Of course, it’s not easy to keep track of dozens of passwords. A password storage program like Last Pass will generate and keep track of truly random passwords, but they are also vulnerable to hackers. Another alternative is to develop your own system for creating unique but memorable passwords. Start with a ten or twelve word phrase that has meaning for you. It could be a song lyric, a favorite quote, the punchline to a family joke, something cute one of your kids said, or a simple fact about your family, e.g. “Our family likes to hike in Yellowstone Park every summer.” Take the first letter of each word—oflthiypes—and start fooling with them so there are capitals, numbers, and other symbols. Ofl2hiYPe$. Now insert initials for the smart device into the password. Changing those initials creates a very secure password that’s specific for each device or app. Pay special attention to microphones and cameras. Because devices with microphones and cameras can eavesdrop on your family, they require extra supervision. Learn how to disable cameras and mute microphones when they aren’t in use. If you don’t have confidence in the controls, think twice about purchasing the device. Or cover lenses with privacy stickers, available from companies like camjmr.com. Consider a separate Wifi connection. As smart devices proliferate, some experts suggest having two password protected Wifi connections for your home. One provides access to computers, tablets and cellphones— devices that contain everything from family photos to financial information. The other allows communication among things—toys, toasters, thermostats and home management systems like Amazon’s Echo or Google’s Home. Some routers make this easy by providing a guest network option, but most families will need a professional to make sure everything is configured properly. Still, linking things into their own separate network creates peace of mind. Even if one device has a security flaw, sensitive information will still be protected. Although smart devices have the potential to make family life more convenient and entertaining, they can also be an expensive distraction. Ultimately, parents have to be the smart ones, evaluating each product to decide whether it’s useful enough—and secure enough--to deserve a place in your home. v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., has been writing about families and technology for over twenty years. She is also the author of Cooperative Wisdom: Bringing People Together When Things Fall Apart, a book that describes a highly effective way to address conflict in families, schools and communities. Available at Amazon and cooperativewisdom.org. @ Copyright, 2017, Carolyn Jabs. All rights reserved.

WILL YOUR CHILD OPT OUT? A Parent’s Guide to State Testing

T

By Stephanie O’Leary, Psy.D.

he time of year for standardized state testing has arrived and if you have school-age children, there’s no way to avoid this topic. Everyone has strong opinions when it comes to the issue of “opting out,” so how do you decide what’s best for your child? To help you make the best decision for your child, let me debunk some common parental concerns when it comes to opting out:

Will opting out spoil my child or teach them to avoid responsibility? No. State tests are not real life situations. You can teach your child to be responsible on a daily basis by having them do chores, manage more of their morning and evening routine, and face the natural consequences of practical slip-ups (i.e., forgotten permission slips, lunch bags, homework assignments).

Will opting out leave my child unprepared for future tests? No. Our public education system includes plenty of opportunities for students to practice taking tests on a weekly basis in the classroom. Your child’s preparedness for future SAT or ACT exams has nothing to do with how often he or she sat for state tests starting in grade school. In fact, hearing year after year that scores don’t matter and that there’s no way to prepare may set a negative precedent and make it even harder for kids who take state tests to gear up when preparation does count and scores do matter.

Will there be negative consequences at school if my child opts out? No. State laws vary, but national laws protect a parent’s right to opt their child out of standardized tests. Might you ruffle a few feathers or get an ear-full from an administrator if you opt your child out? Sure. Will opting your child out endanger their standing as a student or their ability to move on to the next grade? Absolutely not. After you’ve made your decision, here are a few things to keep in mind: You’ll need to write a letter. You can find resources online about specific information to include in your state, but a simple opt-out statement is really all you need to begin. • Your school district may have specific policies or procedures they ask you to follow. You can do your best, but at the end of the day sending a simple note to your child’s principal is sufficient to start the process. • There’s no deadline, so if you’ve made your decision closer to the test date(s) send the letter in anyway—even if it’s the day of the test. • Most schools will allow you to keep your child home during the hour(s) of testing without an attendance penalty if your son or daughter arrives in time for educational instruction (you can call ahead and ask about timing for your child’s specific test). v Stephanie O’Leary, Psy.D. is a Clinical Psychologist specializing in Neuropsychology, mom of two, and author of Parenting in the Real World. She provides parents with a no-nonsense approach to navigating the daily grind while preparing their child for the challenges they’ll face in the real world. www.stephanieoleary.com

SMALL CHANGES=BIG SAVINGS By Sandra Gordon

O

f course, kids are priceless. But raising them? Well, that’s a pricey proposition. According to the USDA, you can expect to spend around $233,610 on each child from birth to age 17 on child-rearing expenses, such as housing, food, childcare and education. Here’s the bottom-line on smart ways to manage your money while raising a family that can add up to big savings.

Do your baby registry right. A well-planned baby registry can minimize the cost of your baby’s first year or two, which can total over $17,500, depending on where you live. Why not let well-wishers foot the bill? Besides big-ticket items, such as a crib, stroller and car seat, list practical items that you’ll need in quantity, such as disposables diapers in larger sizes, cloth diapers, wipes, breast pads and Diaper Genie refills.

Slash your grocery bill. Whatever you spend on groceries, you can slash 25 to 50 percent off your bill by shopping strategically: Plan a weekly menu around sale items in your supermarket’s circular. Save even more by combining sale items with coupons, then stocking your pantry and freezer with bargain buys and planning your meals around your sale inventory. “We spend no more than $75 per week on groceries,” says Kelby Green, an avid couponer and the father for two girls, ages 1 and 3. “For a four-person family, that’s pretty good.” Keep in mind that many grocery items go on sale every six weeks, says Stephanie Nelson, owner of Couponmom.com. The trick to is to buy enough of a sale item (with a coupon) to last until the next sale. To save time, batch cook and freeze meals for later.

Save on birthday parties. “Nothing says fun like balloons,” says certified balloon artist, Sandi Masori, author of The DIY Balloon Bible For All Seasons. Air-filled balloon columns are an easy way to liven up any space

www.wilmingtonparent.com

and turn a (frugal) DIY kid’s birthday party into an event. The gist? You’ll need an inexpensive pole lamp (available at Walmart for around $11) and about 17 large balloons. After blowing up each balloon to the same size, tie balloons together in groups of two. Twist those duplets together to make a quad. Then, wrap each quad around the pole, starting at the bottom and stack them until you’ve covered the whole pole. Attach a jumbo foil balloon as a topper. Use balloon columns to adorn doorways or frame your party space. Personalize balloons by adhering foam-board sticking letters, decorations or photos with double-stick tape. Skimp on gifts. If your kids get inundated with presents from friends and relatives on birthdays and holidays, take the opportunity to give them just one large gift or several smaller items. Your kids won’t feel deprived since your gifts aren’t the whole show.

Save on a sitter. Start or participate in a babysitting co-op--an informal babysitting service organized with other parents in your neighborhood. The gist? You swap babysitting and other services, such as pet sitting, errand running or home repair with a community of fellow parents for free. To find a babysitting coop in your area, visit babysitterexchange.com. Tap into tax savings, including employee benefits, like a flexible spending account (FSA), if your employer offers one. An FSA allows you to pay for out-of-pocket expenses, such as day care, with pre-tax money, ultimately giving you a discount of up to 40 percent. At tax time, be sure to take advantage of the Dependent Care Credit, which is a tax credit you can take for child care, and the American Opportunity Credit if you’ve got kids in college. It gives you a tax break of $2500 per eligible student. Hey, it all adds up. v Wilmington Parent | May 2017 | 19

WHY WOMEN WRITE A BIRTH STORY

SPECIAL SECTION: Maternity, Baby & Toddlers

By Shani Raviv

T

he trend of women recording the experience of their labor and delivery of each child has become a popular and expected tradition. Every woman’s birth story is different – but they are all exciting, encouraging and infectious. Below are some compelling reasons for women to continue this detailed and often emotional record keeping.

To Educate and Support Other Women Stories have been used to transmit knowledge since time immemorial. Narrative is a great way to make information – whether about cultural heritage or about the time it took for your cervix to dilate – interesting and memorable. Education and narrative go hand in hand. It is unfortunate that we don’t live in a culture where women gather post birth, removed from the drudgery of chores and routine, to sit around the fire under the stars with our feminine clan (including the elders and the young) and share our birth stories. Instead, too many of our stories get lost in our hearts.

To Commemorate the Experience

Touch, Feel, Try on... it's better than online shopping! So you've heard about The Bump, but did you know we carry some incredible brand names such as the stylish JuJuBe Diaper Bags, machine-washable Plae Shoes, LilleBaby BabyCarriers, ThinkBaby Products, iPlay sun gear, and so much more! At The Bump we do the research so you don't have to!

Oxytocin, the ‘love hormone’ which initiates both labor contractions and bonding, has been shown to have significant impacts on memory. Mothers often remember their births differently from other people, and details that are significant to others (such as for how long the mother pushed, or the timing of her contractions) are vague to the mother herself. Some say that memory deficits caused by oxytocin are nature’s way of ‘making sure we have more babies’, believing we must forget the pain of childbirth in order to go through it again. Whether or not this is the case, many mothers are cognizant of the factor of forgetting. They write their birth stories as soon after the birth as possible in order to remember everything as it happened.

To Reflect Giving birth is a major life event. Stories used to describe and remember these events have been called “self-defining narratives” in reference to the ways they form our basic perceptions of who we are. These stories evolve with time and re-telling. Sharing them helps us to bond with other people.

To Preserve Beauty All births are sacred. Some women write or talk about their birth stories simply to capture a bit of that beauty. In a culture that derides the importance of birth as a spiritual experience, being honest about the transformative qualities of your birth can be a profound gift to others. For some women, it is an early step in the long journey of giving that is motherhood.

To Change the World

The Bump & Beyond Wilmington's premiere mother, child, and baby boutique. #ShopLearnGrow

Given the hysteria and prejudice surrounding birth in the West, sharing your birth story can be a political act. Birth was a taboo subject for a number of years – the same years during which twilight sleep ensured that many women never consciously experienced it. No matter how you felt about your birth, sharing your experience of it is another drop in the changing of that tide. v

LET IT GO:

Five Things to Stop Worrying About

W

By Sarah Lyons

orrying, it’s something all parents do. I am guilty of it, especially when I lie awake at three am, with the silence of the house ringing in my ears. I worry about what I forgot to do, what I need to do, what I should have done, and what I already did.

Personal Expectations Before I became a parent, I had high expectations for myself as a mother. I had things I wanted to do and things I declared I would never do. After my first child was born, I quickly realized that I would change my perspective on most pre-child declarations. “Let go of the idea that you will be the perfect parent because it won’t happen.” says twin mother Aly Ridgeley of Kansas City. When parents accept that they are doing the best they can, at that moment, for their kids, they will be able to cross this worry off their list.

Guilt Do you worry that you don’t spend enough time with your child? Do you feel guilty you were not able to breastfeed your child or that you missed a soccer game? Do you feel bad you forgot to remind your son to grab his lunch on the way out the door? The guilt of these things and more can weigh heavily on a parent but you have permission to let it go. It is okay if you miss a game or a school party. We all have to make choices and sometimes those choices cause unnecessary guilt. Once a decision is made, move forward and let go of the feelings of guilt. They will only rob you of enjoying the present.

Outward Appearances A tidy house, a perfectly decorated home, an amazing wardrobe, all organic, home-cooked meals, the perfect marriage, smart, athletic, creative children, and a partridge in a pear tree. We want it all and we want it to be perfect, or at least appear that way. This picture is lovely but it is not a realistic, reachable goal. Is your child dressed in weather appropriate clothing? Great. Does it match? It’s your lucky day. Embrace the fact that no one is perfect and nobody’s expecting you to be.

What If’s Parents often worry about things that haven’t even happened yet. What if he gets sick? What if she falls and gets hurt? What if I forget something important? What if he doesn’t make the team? What if’s are not worth the energy they use. Acknowledge they are unnecessary and decide not to waste time on them. Face the problems in front of you rather than worrying about issues that do not exist.

Mistakes Every parent makes mistakes and it is easy to spend time worrying about what should have been done differently. The past cannot be changed and although not easy to do, we must let go of things we cannot change. We can learn from our mistakes and continue to do our best in the future. Parents have permission to let go of past mistakes and teach their children to do the same. Learning to let go of these worries usually leads to feelings of relief. Remember that each family is unique and each parent handles situations differently, it is easier to relax and enjoy your family more. v Sarah Lyons, mother of six, has learned to let go of many things over the years to maintain a happy and functioning household.

Parenthood is hard. There is always something to be done, someone who needs assistance, and multiple things to worry about. The list is endless but may include everything from feeding your kids healthy foods, to your child’s friendships, to what others think about your choices. Some worries are valid, but many are not worth the time and effort. What if we could learn to let them go?

hether you are expecting or have a brand-new bundle of joy, you are most likely thinking…will I ever sleep again??? I know most of you are feeling exhausted right about now and just want to know what you can do to “get your baby to sleep through the night” or “just get them on a schedule”. Before we can “get our babies sleeping through the night or on a schedule” we have to first understand biologically what is happening at what age. Let’s start with the newborn to around 6 to 8 week period and take a look at what’s going on with sleep during this time. In general, Day & Night sleep is unorganized, there are no patterns, and biological sleep rhythms haven’t developed yet. There is often day/night confusion as well. So what can we do as parents during this developmental period? Not a whole lot! We need to do whatever it takes to get both the baby and mother to sleep. Our main goal is to keep the child as well-rested as possible and do what works to promote sleep. The next milestone is around 6 to 8 weeks of age. Major biological changes start taking place around this time. Typically, the longest sleep period regularly occurs at night (4-6 hours stretch). This is where we as parents can start to establish our healthy foundation for sleep. We can begin to work on the components that we have control over such as a consistent sleeping place (may want to introduce the crib), soothing routine, and experiment with self-soothing. Once your baby reaches 12-16 weeks of age, night sleep becomes longer and bedtime becomes earlier. Circadian rhythms begin to develop and a daytime nap schedule will start to emerge. Your baby will have longer wakeful periods and naps will be more spread out. It’s important that we continue these soothing routines even for naps so babies continue to make the connection between the cues and sleep especially during the day. Consistent naps will help to ensure that baby doesn’t reach an overtired state and will also help support the nighttime sleep schedule as well. v Breni Malpass is a Certified Child Sleep Consultant, wife and mother of two children. YOUR HEALTH

Guiding you through

labor and delivery 101 By Christa Melnyk Hines

hrough each step of pregnancy, you’re not only mothering your growing baby, you’re preparing emotionally and physically for the final, most challenging leg of pregnancy’s marathon-labor and delivery. Wondering what to expect?

T

To stay comfortable, try natural pain relief like intermittent walking (unless you’ve dilated beyond 7 cm), sitting on a labor or peanut ball, or asking your partner for a gentle massage on your lower back.

First, discuss any anxieties or fears that you may be experiencing surrounding labor and delivery with your healthcare provider.

the intensity of your contractions increases and the cervix dilates from seven to 10 centimeters.

“They have seen it all and can often offer a lot of reassurance,” says Dr. Tara Chettiar, OB/GYN. “Remember that you’re going into this as a team and everyone has the same goal: healthy mom and healthy baby.”

At this point, you’ve entered the second stage of the labor process, which can last as few as 15 minutes to three hours. During this stage, you’ll start to push. While this is the most physically and emotionally taxing part of the labor process, by the end of all of your hard work you’ll be rewarded with a baby in your arms.

How do I know I’m in labor? Many women feel Braxton-Hicks contractions throughout their pregnancies, especially beginning around the 20-week mark. These contractions are more of an uncomfortable nuisance than painful. They’re also characterized as more erratic than active labor, tending to last 10 to 20 seconds every 10 to 15 minutes. The first stage of labor. Once you’re in active labor, contractions are more painful and rhythmic in nature, lasting 30 to 60 seconds and occurring every five minutes for at least one hour. During this stage, expectant moms feel a wide range of emotions from anxiety and fear about the labor process to excitement that they’ll soon be cuddling their longawaited baby.

Time to push. Active labor has advanced to transitional labor when

Almost done. The last stage of labor is the delivery of the placenta. You may barely notice these contractions after giving birth to your baby. As always, if you have any concerns during your pregnancy or questions about the labor and delivery process, be sure to consult with your healthcare practitioner. v Freelance journalist Christa Melnyk Hines and her husband are the parents of two sons. Harvesting, Storing and Preserving Herbs Herbs are a healthy addition to summer recipes, and if you have a herb garden, now is the time to begin preparing them for use. Harvest Snip a few leaves or leaf-covered stems as needed. For the same intensity of flavor, you generally need two to three times more fresh herbs than dried except for Rosemary which has an equally strong flavor fresh or dried. Don’t worry about harming the plant because regular harvesting encourages new growth which means more for you to harvest. Just be sure to leave enough foliage to maintain plant growth. Harvest when the plant has formed buds, but before they open into flowers for the greatest concentration of flavor. Store Store thin leafy herbs like parsley and cilantro for up to a week in the refrigerator. Place in a jar of water, like a flower arrangement, and loosely cover with a plastic bag. Keep basil out of the fridge to avoid discoloration and others on the counter for quick and frequent use. Wrap dry thicker-leafed herbs like sage and thyme in a paper towel, set inside a plastic bag and place in a warmer section of the refrigerator.

Bonnie Plants

Preserve Freeze sprigs, whole leaves or chopped clean herbs on a cookie sheet. Or pack clean diced herbs in ice cube trays and fill the empty spaces with water. These are great for use in soups and stews. Store the frozen herbs and ice cubes in an airtight container or baggie in the freezer. Or bundle several stems together, secure with a rubber band and use a spring type clothespin to hang them in a warm dry place to dry. Store dried herbs in an airtight plastic or glass jar. May is National Bike Month May is the perfect time to get out and ride with your family, coworkers and friends. Visit the League of American Bicyclists’ website, www.bikeleague.org/programs/bikemonth, for local events in your area. If you are looking for a real challenge, below are a couple routes that will take you on a scenic ride across NC. PORTS OF CALL This route traverses North Carolina’s long and varied coastline including two major sounds – the Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds. The ~300 mile route from Virginia to South Carolina passes through the major ports of the colonial era; Edenton, Bath, New Bern, Wilmington, and Southport among numerous other coastal communities. CAPE FEAR RUN This 160 mile route roughly parallels the course of the Cape Fear River through the southeast coastal plain to the coast. Rolling hills give way to flat land in the swamps and Carolina bays typical of this region of the state. Just south of the Triangle, NC 5 begins at its connection with US 1 in Apex, continuing through Fuquay-Varina, passing near Fayetteville, and ending in Wilmington at its intersection with the NC 3 Ports of Call route.
