have you heard….? The kids fidgeting in their seats, sighing heavily at the slowly moving clock, and tapping their impatient pencils...it’s the sounds of the last week of school. If they can hold on through this first week of June, they are free! Summer Vacation is so close! Whether your family has plans to stay in Wilmington and enjoy the local attractions, or if your plans will take you on long distance adventures, I hope your summer is full of wonderful memories.

Starting June 7th and continuing throughout the summer, the Touch Tank at the Fred and Alice Stanback Coastal Education Center in Wrightsville Beach (309 W. Salisbury St.) will be running a free event every Tuesday. Coastal Creatures is a free opportunity for visitors to interact and learn about living creatures like slimy kelps, shy hermit crabs, friendly whelks, and other interesting creatures that roam the North Carolina coast. If your family is looking for a little culinary adventure, or you just want something besides trail mix to take on your next hike, a new local Beef Jerky Outlet is having their Grand Opening this month. This is a specialty store that carries some interesting varieties of jerky including kangaroo, elk, and alligator. Sometimes those long summer hours with a house full of kids makes you question your sanity and parenting skills. Smart Start of New Hanover County is partnering with the Children’s Museum of Wilmington to offer a Triple P Positive Parenting Program. The free seminar on June 15th is from 5:30-7pm at the Children’s Museum on Orange St. There will be free childcare and food. Reserve a spot by calling 254-3534, ext. 106.

They meet every month this summer, the first meeting is June 10th. Teens are invited to swap recommendations and reviews about books, music, movies, and TV. The event includes games, stories and activities to break the ice. For information please contact Maureen Weinman via email or call (910) 798-6393. Don’t forget! The Tie Fix: Father’s Day Gift Idea

Summer Leagues

The Tie Fix is a subscription tie and accessories box service that, for a monthly fee of $14.99 will have dad looking sharp and stylish all year long! A perfect present for dads on Father’s Day, especially if ties are a must at his work. If your guy doesn’t enjoy his daily tie-wearing ritual, this might be a fun way to make it slightly more enjoyable. Each month, dad will receive a box containing two ties and two accessories (socks, bracelets, or cuff links) that are hip, fashionable and professional. Years ago, founder Parth Sharma (who also owns the company, Skinny Tie Madness) was frustrated with the lack of tie options in stores. He dedicated himself to building a tie brand that focused on bright colors, edgy prints and a large variety of styles. Start your subscription at www.thetiefix.com.

The LifeChanger Diaper Bag Taking baby to the beach will inevitably mean diaper changes. This diaper bag is a nice alternative to laying your baby on a sandy beach towel. The LIfeChanger diaper bag converts into a diaper changing station that you can use on your lap or any stable surface to change a diaper. It has four mesh pouches to hold essentials such as bottles, diapers, wipes, clothes and toys. The LifeChanger is easy to unfold, then just place the baby on the included soft cotton pad. There are safety straps that fit snugly around the child and straps for parents to wear around their waist to keep The LifeChanger in place on your lap. The LifeChanger can also be worn as a shoulder bag, backpack or messenger bag. See the different color and ordering options at www.annaandeve.com/LifeChanger. v

Keeping Family Cell Phones Secure By Carolyn Jabs

A

cell phone is an investment. In addition to the device itself, every family cell phone includes crucial information—contacts and  messages, passwords and personal data, photos and videos. Unfortunately, cell phones are also very vulnerable. They can be lost, stolen, hacked, dropped and infected with viruses. In a recent Verizon survey, over half of the respondents admitted losing or destroying at least one cell phone. A quarter had lost 2 or more phones, and 43% had sent the phone through the laundry. People in the Verizon survey were over 18, so it’s easy to imagine that the figures would be even higher for adolescents. Your family may not be able to avoid every mishap, but you can minimize some of the heartbreak by teaching good cell phone habits as soon as kids get their first phone.

Use a password. A strong password will protect what’s on a phone if it gets stolen lost or “borrowed” by a mischievous friend. Help your child think up something memorable that isn’t based on readily available information such as birthday, street address, initials, etc. If kids object to entering a password every time they want to text, set the delay feature so the password kicks in when the phone hasn’t been used for a certain number of minutes. As a bonus, a password gives everyone in the family just a second to think, “Do I really need to check my phone right now?” Have a back-up plan. A phone is a data storage device, and data needs back-up. It doesn’t matter whether you store photos and contacts in the cloud or on your own computer. Just be sure that back-up happens automatically. Consider the find feature. Most phones have a ‘find-my-phone’ option, which can be helpful if you need to locate a phone—or the child who’s carrying the phone. Just remember that this feature depends on location tracking. If you can find the phone—or the child—so can other people who know the number. Even if tracking isn’t enabled, you can still erase the data on a stolen phone, something that becomes more urgent if the phone is used for financial transactions. Sometimes this feature has to be enabled in advance. To find out how, search for “erase data” and the type of phone you want to protect. Download apps from trusted sites. Apps are part of what makes cell phones useful and fun. Apps can also introduce viruses and security problems. Establish a family policy about downloads. Young children should get permission before every download. Everyone should use reputable sites like Google Play and the App Store because they evaluate apps for safety and reliability before they make them available.

and you don’t want to be the mouse. The only way to have the benefit of updates is to download them. Use the settings on the phone to be sure all family phones get updates automatically.

Install antivirus protection. Some antivirus protection is built into cell phones, but parents may want to add an extra layer of protection. Apps like Lookout, Avast or TrustGo can scan a child’s phone for malicious programs and help you remove them safely. Be leery about links. Several years ago, a security firm found people were more likely to click on fraudulent links on their phones. Maybe that’s because the tiny screen makes it harder to recognize junk messages. Or maybe it’s because cell phone users get in the habit of clicking quickly on social media. Teach kids how to recognize phone spam—unsolicited messages that promise goodies. And remind them that they should never enter personal information into a form that pops up on the phone—no matter how tempting the offer seems to be.

Don’t give other people access. Teach your child how to put a phone into guest mode. Deploy this feature if someone asks to borrow the phone. Then the guest won’t have access to messages, photos and other personal information.

Be suspicious of unknown callers. Young phone users should have a list of approved contacts. Consider blocking everyone else. Older teens should know about the one-ring scam in which international crooks make the phone ring just once. If your child calls back out of curiosity, you get charged hotline fees. The best way to prevent such problems is to block international calls unless there is a reason to receive them. In addition to these technical tips, there are also common sense ways to protect the family cell phones. A brightly colored case and a distinctive ring tone make it easier to find a missing phone. An inexpensive screen protector may keep a screen from shattering if a phone gets dropped—or thrown. A family charging station means that you’ll know where all phones are at least once a day. And a bowl of rice is a time-honored way to dry out a wet cell phone. (Better yet, save those little bags of desiccant so you can toss a few into a sandwich bag with a damp phone). Finally, befriend the folks who sold you the phone. They know the ins and outs of security and other special features. Dropping in for the occasional tutorial is one of the best ways to assure that your family’s cell phones—and the people who use them—are as safe as they can be. v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., has been writing the Growing Up Online column for ten year. She is also the author of Cooperative Wisdom: Bringing People Together When Things Fall Apart. Available at Amazon and Cooperative Wisdom.org.

Stay up-to-date. Hackers are constantly trying to exploit vulnerabilities in cell phones. Fortunately, reputable phone companies, and app makers, try to plug security leaks as they discover them. It’s a cat and mouse game,

6 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Daycare By Sandra Gordon

I

f you’ll be returning to work after your baby is born, you probably know that open daycare spots can go faster than ice cream melts on a hot day. Still, for your child’s wellbeing and your own peace of mind, it pays to get picky. Starting about a few months before you’re ready, “visit three to five daycare programs,” says Kris Murray, author of The Ultimate Childcare Marketing Guide and a consultant to the childcare industry. To narrow your selection, here are the top questions Murray suggests asking daycare providers that can help you know if you’ve found the right place--or if you need to keep looking.

What activities will my child do? The code word to listen for is “curriculum.” With emerging research about early brain development, top childcare programs aren’t glorified babysitters. They’re full-featured learning environments, even at the infant level because learning starts from birth. “There are all sorts of age-appropriate curriculums available now, from baby sign language in an infant room to early reading, nature, science, art, technology and drama programs for toddlers,” Murray says. To you though, it may all just look like fun and games. But that’s the idea. “Children learn best through play,” Murray says. What’s the teacher to child ratio? It’s important for your child to get plenty of attention, especially the younger she is. Babies and toddlers 12 months old and younger need an adult to child ratio of no more than 1:4 (one adult per four infants). For toddlers 12 to 28 months old, the ratio should be 1:3, one instructor per three children. Small class sizes of 10 to 12 children or less is preferred too. Even if there are plenty of adults to children, a larger group of toddlers can feel chaotic.

What’s your policy about unannounced visits? The best answer is, “No problem. We have an open door policy.” Impromptu parent visits should always be welcome, Murray says. After signing your child up, you should be able to drop by anytime.

How will I know what my child did all day? Some daycare centers will distribute a daily activity sheet detailing what each child experienced

16 | June 2016 | Wilmington Parent

that day, such as what she had for snack and how often her diaper was changed. Even better is paperless communication. Many daycare centers offer e-mail or texting messages two to four times daily. It’s a big plus. Imagine sitting in a meeting and getting a text from your child’s daycare or preschool with a video or photo of a picture he just painted.

What’s the security situation like? Some childcare centers have biometrics at the entrance. Instead of punching in a code at the door, you’re be required to place your finger on a pad to enter the building. When touring a daycare center, ask whether the children are monitored by a secure webcam. Is the feed distributed to the director’s office so there’s oversight of what’s happening in the classroom? (Good.) Can you have access to the feed as well? (Double good.) Not only does camera surveillance provide peace of mind because you can see what’s going on, it allows you to engage in your child’s day (“I saw you help Sam pick up his crayons. That was so nice of you.”) “You get to spy with a positive purpose,” Murray says.

Ask yourself: Am I comfortable with the environment? After you’ve narrowed it down to your top picks, spend an hour or two hour observing a classroom when the kids are awake (not at nap time). What’s the vibe? The daycare center should feel open and warm-hearted. Teachers should look like they’re happy to be there and engaged with the children. If you get a good feeling about the place, chances are your child will like it too because he’ll pick up on your satisfaction. Finally, review testimonials from other parents on the daycare center’s Facebook page and review sites such as Yelp. “Sometimes there are disgruntled employees or an occasional unhappy parent,” Murray says. If you see 10 great reviews and one negative one, you’re probably fine. Look for a preponderance of positive.” v Sandra Gordon is an award-winning freelance writer who delivers expert advice and the latest developments in health, nutrition, parenting and consumer issues.

Be a Great Dad By Sandra Gordon

H

ow present are fathers today in their children’s lives? A major report spanning four years recently emerged from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It found that dads of kids under age 5 are very involved in their lives, especially if everyone lived in the same house. Yet, despite playing a big part, “many of us feel incompetent,” says Keith Zefran, author of How to Be a Great Dad and creator of The Great Dads Project, an organization that seeks to transform fathers worldwide into highly effective and deeply fulfilled dads who enjoy remarkably great relationships with their kids. The father of three boys, Zefran says the lack of parenting confidence stems from the past. “Many men I work with feel ill-equipped by their relationship with their own distant dads,” Zefran says. In short, “they don’t have the training to be the dads they want to be.” Zefran contends that women can help the men in their lives heal their “father wound” and become more effective and fulfilled in the dad department. In honor of Father’s Day, he offers this advice.

Put dad in charge. When Zefran’s boys were toddlers, he referred to himself as the babysitter, until an older, seasoned dad overheard and chided him. “I really did think of myself as babysitting until the real parent got home,” he says, because his wife was the primary caretaker. To help your husband or boyfriend feel like the father he is, let him do more and avoid criticizing if he doesn’t do it like you do. “If dad puts the diaper on backwards, stay positive. Zefran says. Also, let dad to take the kids to the park or the pediatrician. “More solo time with the kids allows dad to build his identity as a father, learn to trust in himself and bond with the kids,” Zefran says.

Don’t forget to say “Good job, honey!” Some men aren’t nurturers by nature. “But we have it in us and you can draw it out with praise,” Zefran

says. If your husband is playing dolls with your daughter, tell him that you noticed how comfortable she is with him. Or, if your little boy skins his knee, let your husband swoop in with the Band-Aid. Then, tell your husband how sweet that was to see. “We’re affirmation junkies,” Zefran says. “Work is traditionally where we’re told we’re doing a great job. But if we get praise at home, that’s where we want to be.”

Help dad dream up new fathering experiences. Zefran contends that women excel in the creative parenting department, as in What can we do with the kids that would be really fun? But instead of always being the one to get the tickets or make reservations, he urges women to help dad think up their own kid-centric activities. “You might say, for example, ‘Do you think Jackson might want to go to a professional baseball game with you?’ Or ‘Sophia’s birthday is coming up. What do you think she’d like to do with you that she’d really enjoy?” “The more dad can feel like he’s invested in a fun activity, the more fun he’s likely to have with them and the more involved he’ll want to be,” Zefran says. Encourage dad to say “I love you” or “I’m so proud of you.” For example, “I recently told my 11-year-old son, Jakie, ‘I love what I saw today, the way you shared your X-Box with your brothers even though you had just gotten it. I love your generous spirit and that will serve you your whole life,” Zefran says. That’s the idea. As kids get older, you can send them affirmative texts and e-mails. “The more we praise our children for the good we see in them, the more they’re going to want to do it,” Zefran says. v Sandra Gordon is an award-winning freelance writer who delivers expert advice and the latest developments in health, nutrition, parenting and consumer issues.

Fit Family Challenge 2016 Spotlight Family Update

Upcoming Local Events

Both Spotlight Families, Hengst and Kiell, have been busy meeting with the Expert Panel to get information on Wellness, Nutrition and Training. Jennifer Kiell relates “We have done some prep work and wrote out some goals. After meeting with the wellness educators we revised our goals and made them SMART GOALS. SMART is an acronym for (S) specific who when where why how (M) measurable- how you will know when you’re done (A) attainable- is this realistic (R) relevant- how does this fit into your life now and (T) time-bound- when will you achieve your goal and what is your deadline”. We also talked about the importance of 10,000 steps per day. I did know that was the number to shoot for, what I did not know was that 10,000 steps is 5 miles! All those little steps sure do add up.

Join us at the Wellness Walk June 11, at Smith Creek Park (1.3 miles). The Wellness walk is a free monthly guided walking program. Wellness Walks will take place at 9:00am on the second Saturday of each month at rotating parks around the county. The walk begins with a brief talk on a specific health topic by a professional from our community. The guest speakers will then lead participants on a walk around the park’s walking trail. Walks are free, all ages are welcome and no registration is necessary. Stop by our tent to register for the Fit Family Challenge and pick up a code card for 100 bonus points!

I plan on picking up a tracking device to help motivate us on this “step” of our journey.”

Bulb Fiction:

The Truth About Tanning Beds T

By Malia Jacobson

he warmer days of summer usher in a season of sundresses, sandals, and swimsuits. For many, visits to the tanning salon are another summertime tradition.

Safe Tanning: Myth and Reality Many habitual tanners believe the tanning industry’s claim that artificial rays are a safe alternative to the sun. Not true, says the AAP. Their 2011 report states that UV radiation produced by artificial tanning beds can be 10 to 15 times stronger than the midday sun. UV radiation is a known carcinogen, like arsenic, asbestos, and cigarette smoke. The rates of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, have been on the rise for the past 30 years, with rapid increases in recent years in white women aged 20-29. According to the AAP report, tanning beds are partly to blame. The statistics are sobering. Melanomas represent only five percent of skin cancers, but they cause three times more deaths than nonmelanoma skin cancers. Early detection is key, because melanomas that have metastasized (spread) have no good treatment options. The five year survival rate for metastatic melanoma is only 20 percent. Tanning bed users can suffer from other maladies, including early cataracts, rashes, and prescription drug interactions. Early aging, wrinkles, and sagging skin add to the list of unsightly effects.

Addicted to Tanning? Even when faced with disturbing evidence, many are undeterred in their quest for sun-kissed skin. Why is it such a difficult habit to break? Are some people truly addicted to tanning? One step is promoting a new beauty ideal. The fashion industry is doing its part; some fashion magazines, including Cosmopolitan, are working to change cultural messaging that promotes indoor tanning.

22 | June 2016 | Wilmington Parent

Surprisingly, Hollywood is helping, too. Many of today’s biggest stars are living proof that pale is pretty. “It girls” Amanda Seyfried, Scarlett Johansson, Taylor Swift, and Kristin Stewart are glamorous examples of celebrities who stay out of the sun.

Toward Safer Sun The best tan is no tan at all. Adults and teens need to regard tanning the same way they see recreational drug use, smoking, or sex: a risky behavior that can have long-lasting heath consequences, she says. “We need to be good examples, and teach our kids to be wary of the sun.” The safest sun is shade, agrees Charles Shubin, M.D., director of pediatrics at Mercy FamilyCare. Even with sunscreen, there’s no safe way to bake in the sun or in a tanning bed. Sunscreens aren’t foolproof, he notes; they wear off, and most people don’t use enough. To safeguard skin health, experts recommend avoiding sun exposure during peak hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.; wearing hats with a threeinch brim; choosing clothing with built-in sun protection; and always using protective sunscreen (apply one ounce per application: that’s ¼ of a fourounce bottle).

True Colors Moms can wield great influence over their teens by embracing their natural complexions. Don’t show your kids that you need a tan to feel good or attractive. Accept your own natural skin tone, and you’ll encourage your kids and teens to do the same. The payoff: a healthier, more beautiful future for your whole family. v Malia Jacobson is a nationally published health journalist and mom of three. Her latest book is Sleep Tight, Every Night: Helping Toddlers & Preschoolers Sleep Well Without Tears, Tricks, or Tirades.

Too Old for Summer Camp?

Try a Service Project

I

By Sara Marchessault

t’s finally happened. The kids are no longer excited about summer camp. They may be complaining that camp is for little kids or that none of their friends are going. We parents may agree, but still want our kids to have a summer with some structure. You may have heard of “service learning.” It’s a current buzzword in education. The idea is that students will engage in a service project as part of the regular curriculum and reflect on what they learn as it relates to a class or classes. More and more service learning is popping up in classrooms around the country, particularly at the high school and college level. Instead of sending your older teen to summer camp, a service project can give their summer structure and engage the mind in an experience that might be different from how they learn during the regular school year. In addition, your son or daughter starts to develop marketable skills. Even volunteer roles that seem simple, such as selling concessions, emptying trash cans at a local music festival, or sorting donated goods at a food bank require elements of working on a team, following directions, and using math skills in the real world. Volunteer work can be added to a resume and discussed as examples of experience during job interviews. So, how can you get started?

Decide. What if instead of arguing about whether or not he or she heads to camp, you were able to ask: What would you like to do instead? Engage in a conversation where you each lay several options on the table. If your teen wants to relax and hang out with friends, you can negotiate how he or she will manage time over the summer as you select a service experience.

Select a project. You can choose an organization that already offers work to volunteers, such as Cape Fear Volunteer Center. Your public library may be a great place to volunteer. Shelving books, reading to kids, helping patrons locate specific media, or even tutoring for family literacy

www.wilmingtonparent.com

programs are all possibilities. Visit www.capefearvolunteercenter.org for more opportunities. For students looking for something right before college or during summer breaks, AmeriCorps is an option. This organization is similar to the Peace Corps. Volunteers have an age limit and make a commitment to serve, but instead of international travel, all of the service projects are here in the U.S. Check out what’s going on in your community. Research local online calendars and websites for festivals or concerts that will need volunteers, then visit their websites for more details. Remember that even though an event may be scheduled for just one day, sometimes volunteers are needed weeks in advance.

Create your own service project. Does your son or daughter have a cause he or she feels passionate about? Encourage research on the presence of a group in your community that supports a cause your child expresses interest in.

Document the service. Once the service work has started, it’s important to document the experience. This can be a written journal, or even an audio or video log. When it’s time to refer to these service experiences in an interview or on a college entrance essay, the details will have already been captured. Keeping notes on the service experience can also turn a simple volunteer post into a high-level service learning activity. v Sara Marchessault is the former owner of a summer camp for middle school girls and author of “Beyond Pen and Paper: 33 Experiments in Journaling.” She has spent many hours getting to know young people, listening to their dreams and their fears, and encouraging them that their parents are on their side.
