New Kids Campus!

I

hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far. I have been trying my hardest to find every available adventure, even if it’s only 5 minutes away, before the kids go off to college and start back to school homework and activities. Along the way I have found that you often do not need to leave the state of North Carolina to find a new experience. Driving west to the mountains of Jackson County you can find yourself surrounded by a whole new culture full of excitement! If you only have a weekend open for fun times, you can find Local Fun ideas on page 26. This month we would like to celebrate our local doctors and dentists while giving parents some important information on choosing a new doctor, helping your teen transition to adult care, and even some advice for those unexpected dental emergencies. If your school year schedule is anything like our family’s, doctor and dentist visits can be very difficult to arrange. Summer is the perfect time to catch up on wellness visits, teeth cleanings, and exploring new healthcare options for your family. Congratulations to all our 2017 Wilmington Parent Family Favorite winners! The Family Favorite contest is my favorite because with all the wonderful choices Wilmington offers for families, it is helpful to see what other families recommend! Check out our complete list of family favorites starting on page 21. I wish all our readers a safe and memorable summer!

HAVE YOU HEARD….? We should all be fully immersed in our summer plans, whether we are staying in town or traveling across the world. According to AAA around 34.6 million Americans are planning a road trip. With the cost of gas, hotels, and food, a road trip can get pricey. Of course, following in the paths of other share economy apps, we now have one available for delivery. So, if you’re interested in earning money to cover the cost of your trip, or at least part of it, check out Roadie. This is an app based delivery service that’s like ride-sharing but for sending stuff. Drivers deliver items along the route of trips they are already taking, whether across town or crosscountry, and can make some serious dough.

If you are not planning that far of a trip, you may want to at least take a drive up to Topsail Beach’s Historic Assembly Building. They will be offering a Summer Aquarium Program for school aged children featuring interactive presentations and activities. This program is being presented by the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher Outreach. If you would like to learn more about their programs visit www.topsailbeach.org for a complete schedule.

There is a good chance you have some kids at home from school that are getting a little bored and need an outlet for all that energy. Greenfield Grind Skatepark is offering Beginner Skateboard Clinics on July 1st, 15th, and 29th for only $10, and this includes a free admission pass. The clinics are for ages 7-12 and teach equipment familiarity, identifying safety hazards, the basic setup of a skatepark, and establishing fundamental skills. Once they get the basics, they can come back and skate until exhaustion every Tuesday-Saturday from noon-10pm for 3 bucks.

It’s time to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day! Our family’s tradition usually involves a night with popcorn, leftovers from the barbeque earlier that day, and a replaying of Will Smith’s iconic movie - “Independence Day”. However, if you want to brave the crowds and enjoy a spectacular show, here are a couple places to check out:

We offer 2 day, 3 day or 5 day options, depending on the age group.

Is Your Family Using Technology Wisely?

N

By Carolyn Jabs

ot long ago, a search engine company called ReportLinker surveyed 670 families with children under fifteen to better understand the relationship between American kids and their devices. The results are snapshot of how technology has been integrated into American families. In many ways, parents are following recommendations from experts including the American Academy of Pediatrics. But in a few key areas, parents seem to be ignoring best practice and following the path of least resistance. To get an idea of where your family falls, answer the following questions and compare your family’s tech habits to those of other families as well as recommendations from AAP.

How many screens do you have at home? When you count TV’s, computers, tablets, smartphones and game consoles, the average number of screens per family is 7.3. Most households own a TV (94%), and about half have a video game console. Just over three quarters of the families had at least one smartphone in the household, and 62% of parents said their kids spent 3 to 5 hours a day using a smartphone. The average age when kids get their own phone is 13 and a half. For computing, families are more likely to use laptops (78%) than desktops (63%). The researchers also noted that among families with kids under ten, tablets are very popular—58% of children under 5 use them--and they may eventually rival television as the device of choice. Perhaps the most interesting statistic is about technology in bedrooms. The AAP recommends that bedrooms be device free and children “avoid exposure to devices or screens for one hour before bedtime.” Despite that advice, about two thirds of the families with five or more devices allow kids to have one in the bedroom and, not surprisingly, those kids are more likely to use devices before they sleep.

How many hours per day do your kids interact with technology? Having more devices in the household also increased the amount of time kids spend with technology. Half the parents said they limit “plug in” time to less than two hours a day, but that rule is more likely to be enforced in families that have fewer devices and keep them out of bedrooms. The AAP recently revised its guidelines to say that “parents must develop personalized media use plans” based on each child’s age, health, temperament and developmental stage. They also point out that parents must be sure technology doesn’t squeeze out other healthy activities including sleep, physical play and time away from media.

When do your kids use technology? Over 80% of families said kids used devices during their spare time; only 6% allowed them to be used at mealtime. That’s consistent with the AAP recommendation that mealtimes be media-free. Is technology a positive or negative influence on your kids? Experts continue to argue about whether technology is changing childhood, but three quarters of parents believe devices are good for kids. Half say technology creates more benefits than risks, and 25% believe being com6 | July 2017 | Wilmington Parent

fortable with technology is essential for kids in the 21st century. For the 25% who feel technology has a negative impact on children, 11% believe technology creates more harms than benefits and 14% feel that technology “ruins the essence of childhood.”

What are the main disadvantages of using tech devices? Twenty percent of parents couldn’t think of any disadvantages. A third worried that technology kept children from more traditional childhood activities such as playing, going outside or reading. Thirty one percent were concerned that time with devices made kids more isolated and less social. Only 10 percent worried about kids being less creative and 4% were concerned about increased aggression. To those concerns, AAP adds sleep disruption, the risk of obesity because of too much sedentary time and problematic Internet use including online bullying.

What are the main advantages? When asked about benefits of technology, parents were clear: 40% felt technology promotes cognitive development and school readiness. About a quarter agreed that technology expands a child’s horizons, and another quarter thought access to devices makes kids more savvy about using technology of all kinds. Only 7% admitted using tech gadgets to amuse kids so they could do something else. AAP guidelines also note the social benefits of devices, including the opportunity to interact with distant friends and family members.

Do your children manage their own tech time? Over half of parents (58%) believe their kids can manage their own time on electronic devices. Ironically, in the households where children use screens more than five hours a day, 43% of parents think kids are doing a perfectly good job of time management. On the other hand, if you sometimes find it difficult to manage screen time, you’re not alone. 42% of parents admitted they feel the same way.

How often do you know what content your kids are watching? Even though parents vary a lot in how much access they give kids to technology, they agree with the AAP on one thing—it’s important to monitor what kids are consuming. Eighty three percent say they keep an eye on what kids watch, and 71% claim to have activated parental controls. Of course, one survey isn’t definitive, but it does reveal places where parents are on the right track—and improvement is possible. In the end, every family has to devise a device policy that works for them. To help, the AAP offers an interactive tool called Create Your Family Media Plan. Find it by looking for Media Plan at healthychildren.org. v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., has been writing about families and technology for over twenty years. She is also the author of Cooperative Wisdom: Bringing People Together When Things Fall Apart, a book about a highly effective way to handle conflict in families, schools and communities. ARE YOU A FAILURE-FRIENDLY PARENT?

By David M.R. Covey and Stephan M. Mardyks

W

e all want our kids to be successful. But if you are praising them only for their wins, and never their losses, you could be sabotaging their futures. Quite often, parents teach their children that mistakes are shameful, failure is bad, and success alone is acceptable. But mistakes are necessary for learning. In fact, teaching your children to fear failure could actually hinder their success later on in life. Mistakes are a natural and even desirable part of growing up because they teach us what not to do next time. They are simply a byproduct of taking risks, which is a good thing. Yet parents don’t always frame it that way. If you want to raise successful kids, you must teach them that failure and mistakes are essential and instructive. Can you imagine if the parent of a toddler rewarded and praised them only if they succeeded in walking on the first try? Kids need to understand that their mistakes set the learning process into motion—and should be taught to persevere whenever they “fall.” Here are a few key pieces of advice to help you raise confident and successful kids:

Never praise them for being “smart.” Research by psychologist Carol Dweck says that it’s vital to praise children for their efforts, not their intellect. Praising their intellect harms their motivation and their performance. Why? Because the moment they fall short, their confidence plummets and their motivation stalls. They falsely believe that success means they’re smart, and failure means they’re dumb. That’s the fixed mindset.

Rejoice and celebrate the effort, the journey, and the process as much as the end result. Society is obsessed with the end result, but you can help your kids see that the journey is much more meaningful and important. Instead of emphasizing getting the A on the test, say something like: “I am so proud of you for studying so hard the past few nights. I know you are learning so much about the Civil War era. What are some of the most interesting things you’ve learned so far?”

Urge them to keep going when they fail—even when they disappoint themselves or you. This is especially important as kids get older and become teenagers, because the opportunities to make mistakes increase, along with the consequences of mistakes. After a disappointment or setback, encourage your child not to give up so easily. For example, if your teen wants to quit soccer after missing a crucial shot in the match, remind them that they have the opportunity to practice more and improve their performance next time. Remind them that they aren’t ‘failures’—they just need to keep trying. v Authors David M.R. Covey and Stephan M. Mardyks are widely seen as world-renowned experts in the field of global learning and development. They are the cofounders and CEOs of SMCOV, Wisdom Destinations, and TrapTales; and cofounders and managing partners at ThomasLeland, For more information about Trap Tales, please visit their websites at www. traptales.com,www.wisdomdestinations.com, or www.smcov.com.

Do You Know How To Handle COMMON DENTAL EMERGENCIES? By Dr. Karson Kupiec

D

ental emergencies are something that many of us experience, yet few of us know how to handle them. A good portion of those going to the emergency room for what they see as a dental emergency actually have problems that can be taken care of at home or simply by waiting until the dentist’s office opens. “Many people are not sure what is a dental emergency and what is something that can wait until morning, so some people will go straight to the emergency room,” explains Dr. Karson Kupiec, a second-generation orthodontist at Kupiec Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry. “If it’s a true emergency, people shouldn’t hesitate to get to the hospital, but they will probably find it comforting to know that there are some common issues they can handle right from home.”

Loose bracket or band - The bracket or band on your braces may need to be re-fitted. You may have a situation that requires cutting a wire or sliding a bracket off a wire at night or over the weekend. If you need to cut a wire in case of emergency, you may use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol.

Wire irritation - Sometimes discomfort caused by a wire on your braces can be resolved by moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or eraser. If the wire will not move, try covering the end of it with a small piece of cotton or a small amount of wax. If the wire is painful, you can cut it with nail clippers or scissors that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. Lost separator - Most patients lose a brace separator during their treatment. Do not worry about losing a separator. Just call the orthodontist to have it replaced. Loose appliance - If an expander or banded appliance dislodges, push it back into place and eat soft food until it is repaired. Do not activate the appliance. If it comes out completely, place it in a bag and bring it to your appointment. Expanders and appliances should remain intact for the duration of treatment. If they become loose, it is usually caused by eating hard or sticky foods. Please refrain from eating these types of food.

Broken or knocked-out tooth. Only adult teeth that get knocked out have a chance at being replanted, according to the National Institutes of Health. They recommend getting the knocked-out tooth to the dentist as soon as possible, and only hold the tooth by the crown, which is the part you chew with. To transport it to the dentist, you can keep it in the mouth where it fell out of, put it in a container with saliva or cow’s milk, and apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth to help ease pain. When in doubt, speak to a health professional so you can get relief as quickly as possible. But knowing how to handle some of these common emergencies may help you get through the day or the weekend, with more comfort and confidence. v Dr. Karson Kupiec has a full-service orthodontic and pediatric dentistry practice, with locations in Rancho Santa Fe and Imperial, Ca. The office offers traditional braces, as well as Invisalign, and dentistry for children, including offering cleanings, sedation, and sealants. When Teens Should See Doctors Alone Once your child hits puberty, the doctor may close the door in your face -- literally. “The 12-year visit is really a time when adolescents should be seen alone, says Sophia Yen, MD, MPH, a clinical instructor of pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine, -- even earlier if they have already entered puberty. Granted, the transition to the solo visit is not always easy for parents. “What we talk about, Yen tells parents about her closed-door conversations, “is confidential unless they are hurting themselves, someone is hurting them, or they are hurting someone. Then I will definitely tell you.” Here’s the good news: Learning to navigate the doctor’s office as a teen is good practice, Yen advises parents. “They will end up in the emergency room without you [someday],” she says. “They need to know their medical history and how to interact with a physician.”

Parents’ Role Before transitioning to an adult primary care doctor, parents have some homework to do to make this transition a success. • Help your teen learn how to make appointments, get prescription refills, etc. • Ask your pediatrician when to begin making the transition to an adult primary care doctor. • Suggest how your teen can ask questions and make sure they understand what they may hear during doctor appointments.

Responsibilities With Your New Doctor Your teen has made the transition to your new adult primary care doctor and has their first appointment. Now what do you do? Have your teen write down any questions they may have ahead of time. They can bring a notebook to the appointment to record any instructions given to by the doctor. A

s your children become young adults, their responsibilities increase, they become more independent, and need to learn how to take care of themselves to remain healthy as they grow older. A first step in taking a more active role in their health care decisions is to transition from a pediatrician to an adult primary care doctor, such as a family medicine physician or an internist. Their pediatrician can assist you in finding an adult primary care doctor who meets your teenager’s specific needs. This may or may not be the same doctor you use, sometimes it can be helpful to find a doctor that specializes in teens and young adults. Choose a new doctor you and your teen can trust and feel completely comfortable with to ensure a positive transition. You can also make an appointment to talk about any health concerns and meet a potential new doctor before making your final decision. If your teen has a chronic illness or complicated medical history, talk with their current doctor about when to transition to an adult primary care doctor. Remember information is power – ask questions and get advice. Together, you can determine what works!

Time to Tango with the Tooth Fairy? By Christa Melnyk Hines

I

t seems like just days ago when I waited patiently for my son’s first little biters to erupt in his infant mouth. Those days somehow melted magically into years and before I knew it, I could hear the Tooth Fairy fluttering about. Like many parents, I wondered: what is developmentally normal when it comes to baby tooth loss, how does the tooth-obsessed fairy collect her pearly prizes, and what is the paying pixie’s going rate for a baby tooth these days?

Losing Baby Teeth. Pediatric dentist Dr. Jill Jenkins says, in general, children lose their first tooth between the ages of four and seven with teeth falling out in the order in which they first came in. Should you yank a loose tooth? “Usually, the best policy is to let it come out on its own,” Jenkins says. “If the other tooth is coming in, parents can have their child suck on a popsicle to numb the gums and eat pizza crust, carrots or apples. If a tooth is wiggly and we’re not seeing the new tooth, letting your child work through it on his own is usually the easiest way and the least stressful way to go about it.” Enter the Tooth Fairy. That first loose tooth can cause anxiety for some children. Often, anxiety turns to excitement as children listen to tooth-loss stories exchanged among classmates and anticipate the reward the Tooth Fairy leaves behind. While the exact origin of the enigmatic Tooth Fairy is steeped in mystery, historically the loss of baby teeth is an important rite of passage.

Cups, Pillows, Pockets and Doors. The Tooth Fairy isn’t picky about how she collects baby teeth. Although a tooth placed in a plastic ziplock bag or envelope tucked under the pillow should do the trick, many parents opt for a Tooth Fairy pillow or pouch for their youngster. The Going Rate. According to a 2015 survey conducted by Visa, the tooth fairy is tightening her belt. Kids are receiving an average of $3.19 per tooth. That’s down 24 cents from last year. Beth Foster says that the Tooth Fairy typically pays $1 per tooth although her daughter Logan, 6, discovered a $5 payout under her pillow for her fifth tooth. “This is a Foster tradition and I’ve been assured the good old fairy does not leave $10 for the tenth,” Foster says.

What does the Tooth Fairy do with those teeth? Legend says that the Tooth Fairy tosses the

teeth up to the sky and they become stars. Naturally, many theories exist. Foster’s daughter Logan says, “The fairy uses her wand to shrink the teeth to a very small size so she can carry them in a bag with her from house to house. She then takes the teeth to Santa so he can use them to make toys.” Whatever she does with them, with each tooth lost, adulthood gains another foothold on our kids. No wonder through the ages we’ve found ways to mark this stage in our kids’ lives, which seems as fleeting as the Tooth Fairy herself. v Freelance journalist, Christa Melnyk Hines, and her husband are the parents of of two boys. The Tooth Fairy visits their home frequently these days. Christa’s latest book is Happy, Healthy & Hyperconnected: Raise a Thoughtful Communicator in a Digital World.
