ack to school, schedules, early mornings, and after school activities. If you’re not ready for this, join me as I hide under my beach umbrella with my face buried in a book. Eventually, we’ll all be forced to face the reality of a new school year. When you’re ready to accept this, take a look at this month’s back to school section to help you get organized. There is an article my local sleep consultant, Breni Malpass, that will help you get your kids back on a normal sleep schedule before the first school bell rings. For parents who have a younger child not joining their siblings at school yet, there is an article with great activities to help your little pre reader start practicing. Be sure to check out the Back to School section and keep it close at hand all year long. This month’s special section is full of important dates such as, Open House days and times, and School Calendars for traditional, yearround, and early colleges. If you’re new activities for the kids after school, the After School Enrichment Guide starts on pg. 24 and is full of a variety of ideas! If you still don’t know where to begin with your back to school plans, see pg. 16 for a helpful article by Christa Melnyk Hines. Christa’s article, Smart Start: Tips from Teachers to Kick Off the School Year Right, gets advice from the experts on how to get your child ready for an amazing new school year! So enjoy those last few moments of summer break, and when you’re ready…..have a wonderful school year!

This weekly concert series begins Aug. 7 with mountain music band Straits Haven and their final concert of the season will be held on Sept. 18. Coolers and picnicking are always welcome. Looking for a fun way for kids to learn more about the world while enjoying the Olympic Games in Brazil this year? Download the Stack the Countries App to learn facts about different countries, see landmarks and learn where they are located, and learn the locations of all the countries participating in the 2016 Olympic Games! The Northeast branch of New Hanover County Library, will also be celebrating the opening of the Summer Olympic Games on August 5 at 11am with a Wii sports tournament, crafts, and a movie (2-4pm). The drop-in event is free and families are invited to participate. Find out more about this event at www.nhclibrary.org. The Olympic Games is a good time to teach kids some important lessons: • The ability to handle pressure • Losing gracefully • The ability to recover from mistakes • Give your best to your team • Sacrifice your comfort to reach your goals. However, this is also a good time for parents to learn some important lessons about allowing your kids to enjoy their sports experiences. John Sullivan, former Wilmington Hammerheads soccer player, offers excellent advice for parents and coaches on his blog at www.changingthegameproject.com. His latest post about how it feels to NOT make the Olympic team is a humbling read.

Hi-Chew School starts soon and it will be time for the daily lunch box packing to begin! Parents want to fill that box with the healthiest options available, kids want something tasty to look forward to in the middle of their day. My kids have discovered a snack they enjoy, and I don’t worry when I include this treat in their lunch. Featuring flavors including mango, strawberry, cherry, grape, green apple, and banana, HI-CHEW is a good choice for a healthy pick-me-up during the school day. HI-CHEW snacks have a unique taste and texture that admittedly might become addictive.

Wine & Design of Wilmington recently celebrated their Grand ReOpening with new studio owners, Tom and Kathleen Barber. I had the privilege of attending one of their open house events with my daughter, and we had an amazing time! Neither of us had ever participated in one of these painting events. My painting skills are extremely weak and I had low expectations on what I could accomplish, but I was willing to spend an evening enjoying rare time with my daughter. Surprisingly, we both were able to produce a painting worthy of hanging on the wall at home! The atmosphere was friendly and positive, the owners and paint instructor, Brie Daleo, were patient and knowledgable, while encouraging everyone to have a stress-free evening! Wine & Design has a separate room for kids and we enjoyed browsing through the Art Buzz Kids paintings. Visit www.wineanddesign.com/ locations/wilmington to find out more information. v

Tips for Connected Caregivers By Carolyn Jabs

S

ooner or later, parents leave their kids with other people. And those other people—teenagers, family members, daycare providers and nannies—have cell phones. It’s no secret that cell phones are distracting—and irresistible. One survey by researchers at the University of Washington found that, among caregivers surveyed on a playground, 28% felt it was perfectly OK to engage in cellphone activities like checking e-mail or reading while supervising children. Another 24% chose to curtail phone use when they were responsible for kids. The largest group--44%--thought they should restrict phone use but found that they often couldn’t resist the temptations of the tiny screen. All of this means parents need to think carefully about what they expect from caregivers—and then have a frank conversation about how and when it’s OK to use a cellphone. Rules may vary depending upon the experience and maturity of the caregiver, but here are some things to consider:

Clarify expectations. The first responsibility of a caregiver is to keep kids safe, and it’s all too easy to lose track of what kids are doing if you’re focused on a phone. Using a cellphone should be totally off-limits during any kind of risky activity—driving, swimming, bathing, bicycling, walking on the street or, for that matter, climbing on playground equipment. If you expect the caregiver to be interacting with your child—playing, talking, having fun—it makes sense to adopt the policy of most employers: no personal cell phone use during business hours. Be specific about what’s excluded--social media in all forms, calls and texts that aren’t related to caregiving, watching videos or listening to music with headphones.

What About Phone Fun? Smart phones are very entertaining. Depending on the age of your child and the good judgment of the caregiver, it may be perfectly acceptable for them to bond over an amusing game or a funny video. Just be sure your caregiver knows what you consider acceptable. Is it OK for your child to watch YouTube? Which apps meet your standards? What kind of music is acceptable in your house? If you have any doubts about your caregiver’s judgment, point them toward a site like commonsense.org that identifies apps, games and other media that are fun and age-appropriate.

Sharing is not Caring. Your kids are cute. Nobody knows that better than you. A cell phone makes it way too easy to take and share adorable photos and videos. Decide in advance about what is permitted. Even if you allow your caregiver to snap a picture or record something fun, make it clear that nothing gets posted without your permission. Also, ask your caregiver not to post status updates while working for you. There’s no reason for others to know that you’re not at home.

Anticipate Emergencies. A cellphone can be a lifesaver in an emergen8 | August 2016 | Wilmington Parent

cy, so encourage your caregiver to keep one close and functional. Program 911 and other emergency numbers into the phone and talk about what constitutes a crisis. How should your caregiver handle an injury or illness, a storm or power failure, an intruder? (The Red Cross has a very thorough guide for caregivers at tinyurl.com/nsvtdux.) Remember that the camera on the phone can be invaluable if the caregiver has a question about the seriousness of something like an insect bite or a scraped knee.

Appropriate contact. Ask your caregiver to add your contact information to his or her phone rather than leaving it on a piece of paper that might get misplaced. Be specific about the circumstances under they should contact you. If a caregiver is new or inexperienced, you may encourage questions about basics like house rules. Let your sitter know whether you prefer a call or text message. And be clear about times when you will be unavailable because you’ll be driving or in a meeting. Provide a back-up number for a spouse, a neighbor or a close friend.

Kiddy calls. Talk with your caregiver about whether and when it’s OK for your child to call you. Some children settle down for bed more easily if they get a quick good night from a parent. For others, knowing that Mom is a video chat away makes it harder to feel comfortable with a caregiver. If your child is old enough to have a phone of his or her own, explain that the caregiver is in charge, so you won’t be fielding questions about routine problems or complaints about siblings.

Be realistic. Nobody, including you, can be attentive every single minute. Talk to your caregiver about acceptable breaks. Is it OK to check in on the cellphone when a child goes down for a nap or when the kids watch a favorite show in the afternoon? Be respectful of your caregiver’s needs. Maybe he or she needs to touch base with their own children or a parent. Don’t be a distraction. Yes, it’s tempting to check in on your kids, especially if you don’t leave them very often. Just remember that your caregiver can’t focus on your kids if they’re constantly being interrupted by calls and texts from you. Limit yourself to pre-set check-in times or if you have to make a change in plans. Finally, don’t be afraid to use social media to do a little screening. A quick search for your sitter’s name may alert you to other situations you’ll want to anticipate or other rules you’ll want to institute. Just be sure your cell phone policies are crystal clear before you walk out the door. v Carolyn Jabs, M.A., has been writing Growing Up Online for ten years. Easy Pre Reading Games

for Little Ones W

By Sara Marchessault

ith the best intentions, we set out to have our little one, maybe at age three or four, start to practice reading skills in a formal way. We introduce them to letters, sounds, and even sight words. If it works, great! But, what about the times it might not work? What about the kids that push back, that resist sitting still for formal instruction? It does not mean they won’t read. Or that they aren’t capable. It does mean that maybe they aren’t ready for the formal structure of reading. The good news is that there are simple ways to get your kid excited about reading and practicing skills that do not require you to sit down and provide formal instruction. These activities are fun for parents and kids and extremely helpful for all of the reading teachers in the not-sodistant future.

Beef up your alphabet song. Most kids know the basic ABC song from a very young age. Learning the song comes first, then identifying letters, and eventually letter sounds. Adding those letter sounds is how you beef up your ABC song. One example is to start each verse with a word that starts with a particular letter, say the sound, and then the letter name, doing each of these twice. The format for the letter A might be: Apple. Apple. Short a sound. Short a sound. A. A. “Apple, apple, a, a, A.” Then “Baby, baby, /b/, /b/, B.” Choose whatever tune you want or make up your own. Organizing your alphabet sound song by theme is fun too. Rhyme game. Rhymes are a popular way to introduce kids to word families and phoneme chunks. When starting out, model rhyming words by stating them in pairs. “Cat-rat.” Bat-sat.” Kids might catch on quickly and make up their own rhymes, or they might just listen and process, saving what they hear to apply at a later time. When they start to make their own rhymes, be careful not to dismiss silly sounding words. It’s tempting to correct them, but they are just getting the hang of word sounds and that some words sound like others. If you say “what rhymes with fish?”

www.wilmingtonparent.com

and the response is “smish” just have a good laugh about it and point out that their word does have the same ending sound. For some real fun ask them what smish means.

Spelling. Starting with their name, encourage them to start thinking about how spelling works. Try spelling names out loud. If you are writing a grocery list, or addressing a letter and your little one is in the room, spell a few words aloud so they can hear you break the word into letters. Spell the names of items on the dinner table, noticing the beginning, ending, and middle sounds.

Encourage unique spelling. Students I’ve taught to read and my own children enjoyed playing a game where they put random letters together and ask me to “spell it.” What they really meant was read it, or tell them what word they just spelled. This game usually ends in hilarity. Kids will say things like “j-m-e-p-t.” When parents sound it into a word and try to pronounce it, expect lots of giggling.

Reading with a twist. Read with your kids as often as possible. This is an old adage that we have heard repeatedly. The twist is for you, the reader, to leave out words and encouraging your little one to fill them in. Start with a story you have read over and over and just leave off the word at the end of the sentence. “I do not like green eggs and ____. I do not like them Sam I __.” Give her a little nudge if she needs it, or ask her to read with you. For an added bonus, put your finger on the page under the words so she can start to make the connection that each word stands on its own. v Sara Marchessault is a writer, life coach, and dedicated diarist. Her first love was the early childhood classroom, where she taught many kids to read and write. She is 110% dedicated to helping her clients and readers create a life full of joy. Starting Smart: Tips from Teachers to Kick Off the School Year Right

SPECIAL SECTION: Back to School

By Christa Melnyk Hines

S

chool bells will soon ring once again. Whether that comes as music to your ears or a bittersweet reminder that the free-spirited summer days are over, check out these tips from the pros to help you and your child enjoy a smart, happy start to school.

Build anticipation. Got a youngster who’s bummed to head back to school? Stay upbeat. Remind him of the subjects that spark his curiosity that he’ll learn about in the coming year, whether that’s cursive writing, multiplication or a special grade-level project. “Talk to your children about friends they haven’t seen all summer and about new kids joining their class,” says first grade teacher Megan Jasperson. “This is sure to get them excited for the school year to begin.” Show support. “Avoid teasing your child by saying things like ‘you got the meanest teacher in school!’ or acting as if you’re overjoyed to be sending your child back to school because this can make him wonder why you’re so eager to be away from him,” says Becky DeNoon, a third grade teacher. Instead offer encouragement and support. Remind him that it’s normal to feel disappointed about summer break coming to a close, but that you’re excited to see how much he’ll learn and grow during the coming months.

Reduce uncertainty. Often kids feel nervous about unknowns like transitioning to a teacher they don’t know, a new school or a different set of classroom rules. Take advantage of any back-to-school or orientation events that your school offers to help your apprehensive scholar familiarize herself with the classroom, meet classmates and connect with the teacher before school starts. Knowing what to expect and where to go on the first day will ease some of a child’s anxieties.

Seek out friendly faces. If you’ve recently moved to the community or switched schools, look for other families with children your child’s age to arrange a playdate or to meet for frozen yogurt.

Some schools also feature parent Facebook pages. Hop on and ask if anyone would like to get together at the park before school begins. Many parents love to help welcome new families. And these efforts will lessen first day jitters when your youngster knows she’ll recognize a few familiar faces when she gets there. Have an adolescent heading into middle school? Encourage him to join after-school clubs and activities. His involvement will help him form connections with peers who share his interests, says Traci Keeler, a sixth grade math teacher and eight grade volleyball and track coach.

Build partnerships. Maintaining open communication and partnering with your student’s teacher is key to a successful school year. “You know your child best and your insights into your child are helpful to us,” Vohs says. Introduce yourself to the teacher and tell her the best ways she can contact you. In turn, remember that teachers care about their students’ best interests. Vohs speaks for many of her colleagues when she says: “I hope parents will trust me to make the best possible decisions for their child while he or she is with me.” Get involved. Help your children start seeing school as an extension of their home life by volunteering periodically. Most kids get a kick out of seeing their parents during the school day, whether they volunteer in the cafeteria, library or the classroom. Unable to volunteer at school? Ask the teacher what you can do to help from home. v Freelance journalist, Christa Melnyk Hines always loved the back-toschool season as a child and still does. Her two boys don’t share her enthusiasm. Christa is the author of Happy, Healthy & Hyperconnected: Raise a Thoughtful Communicator in a Digital Word.

any of us are preparing for the first day of the 2016/2017 school year. Back to school clothes, school supplies, filling out forms, and planning carpools are taking priority. One thing many parents may forget to prepare for is how going back to school will affect their child’s sleep. In addition to your school age children’s sleep being affected, your babies and toddlers may be affected by the change in schedule as well. Below are some tips to help transition everyone from the sometimes chaotic summer schedule, to a back to school schedule that will benefit everyone!

1. Slowly bring bedtime earlier. Depending on the amount of change needed, start at least 1-2 weeks prior to school starting. Begin transitioning to the appropriate bedtime and wake-up time incrementally. Every couple of days, wake your child up 15 minutes earlier and get them in bed 15 minutes earlier until you reach your desired schedule. 2. Re-establish your bedtime routine. Children need some quiet time to wind down before going to bed. The routine may include a bath, quiet play, and/or story time. Your bedtime routine creates cues for our bodies to settle down and prepare for sleep. In addition, limit screen time (television and electronics). You will also want to avoid caffeine and heavy meals before bed as they both can interfere with your child’s ability to fall asleep.

now registering for our 2016-2017 School Year Season

3. Ensure the bedroom environment is calming and peaceful. For the most restorative sleep, we want our bedrooms to be dark, cool, and have a comfortable bed. The darker the room, the more melatonin our body produces. The ideal sleeping temperatures are 68 – 72 degrees. Even a slight change in temperature can make a difference.

Bring this coupon in and save $25 off new class enrollment Offer expires September 30,2016

You do not want to wait until the first day of school to begin making changes. If you do, you will likely be met with a great deal of protest. By implementing these simple steps well in advance of the first day of school, you will have a happier child in the morning. We all like happy children! v

Test Your Supplement Smarts By Sandra Gordon

V

itamin and mineral supplements are big business. Americans collectively spend roughly $34 billion on them annually. Still, vitamin and mineral misinformation is rampant. How supplement smart are you? We guarantee that you’ll learn some new facts from our quiz that will enhance your supplement savvy.

True or false: A daily multivitamin will turn a bad diet into a healthy one. Answer: False. A multivitamin can help, but it won’t fix you completely. Americans should take a multivitamin primarily because our diets are so poor, says Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., senior scientist in the antioxidants research laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston, MA. We eat less than half the number of recommended daily servings of fruit and one of our favorite vegetables is nutritionally barren iceberg lettuce. If you decide to take a multivitamin, look for one that provides roughly 100 percent of the daily value for vitamins A, C, D and E, thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin, vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid and zinc.

True or False: You should take a “carb-smart” vitamin if you’re on a low-carb diet. Answer: False. You don’t need a designated vitamin for low-carb diets; a good multivitamin will do the job. To make sure you’re getting all of the nutrients body needs when you’re cutting calories, “Dieters may need to take a good multivitamin, multimineral supplement,” says Fred Pescatore, M.D., author of The Hamptons Diet, (John Wiley & Sons). This is especially true if your diet dips below 1400 calories per day, an amount that won’t meet your needs for essential vitamins and minerals.

True or False: The best time to take a multivitamin is on an empty stomach. Answer: False. For maximum absorption, it’s best to wash it down with a meal. “Our bodies are designed to absorb nutrients with food,” says Dr. Blumberg. “Taking a multivitamin when you’re eating makes good use of the natural function.” It also helps avoid the potential for nausea. Moreover, you’ll be more likely to remember your multi if you have it with the same meal every day.

True or False: A multivitamin doesn’t give you energy. Answer: True. “Multivitamins don’t provide energy because they don’t contain calories,” says Allred. If you’re feeling sluggish, tweak your diet. Increase your consumption of fiber-rich foods, including vegetables, beans and lean protein.

True or False: Vitamins don’t expire. Answer: False. They do expire. This usually occurs two to three years after they’re manufactured, so purchase a quantity you’ll be able to finish before then. Maximize shelf life by storing vitamins in their original opaque, lidded containers in a cool, dry place, such as a kitchen cupboard.

True or False: Only pregnant women need folic acid. Answer: False. All women need at least 400 micrograms of folate (or 250 micrograms of its synthetic form, folic acid) daily. Pregnancy is just one reason to get enough folic acid; it can also help protect against heart disease, the number one killer of American women. v

Back to School Fitness for Parents Preparation and planning. Make a weekly or monthly calendar of your work schedule, school functions, appointments and other responsibilities. By doing this, you can see when is the best time each day to fit in exercise. Even if you only have three 10-minute breaks throughout the day to squeeze in a workout – it all adds up. Get out of the gym. Sometimes it’s most convenient to get your heart rate up in the simplest of ways, such as by doing a set of sit ups when you first get out of bed in the morning, dancing during television commercials, or by taking quick, brisk walking breaks throughout your day. Kids’ playtime and after school practices are a great way to get in some cardio. For example, instead of sitting in the car or bleachers while your child is at football practice, try jogging around the field during practice. You can still pay attention, but you are also burning calories. Make exercise your “me time.” Sometimes parents have their children in so many activities that they rarely take time out for themselves. This is why exercising is the perfect opportunity to focus on “you,” because it sends endorphins throughout the body while relieving stress. After all, you wouldn’t skip out on a massage, would you? So why not give exercise that same priority? Consider hiring a personal trainer. Personal trainers motivate their clients and teach them the proper mechanics of exercises to ensure safety. Having a personal trainer holds you accountable because you know that you’ve scheduled a set time and day every week.See if you can find someone who has a similar schedule as you and then the two of you can do small group training – which is less expensive and more fun! National Immunization Awareness Month Vaccines give parents the safe, proven power to protect their children from serious diseases. Parents can provide the best protection by following the recommended immunization schedule – giving their child the vaccines they need, when they need them. Infants. Babies receive vaccinations that help protect them from 14 diseases by age 2. It is very important that babies receive all doses of each vaccine, as well as receive each vaccination on time. Toddlers. After age 2, children are still recommended to receive a yearly flu vaccine. Preschool. Children will also be due for additional doses of some vaccines between 4 and 6 years of age. Following the recommended immunization schedule is one of the most important things parents can do to protect their children’s health. If a child falls behind the recommended immunization schedule, vaccines can still be given to “catch-up” the child before adolescence. Child care facilities, preschool programs and schools are prone to outbreaks of infectious diseases. Children in these settings can easily spread illnesses to one another due to poor hand washing, not covering their coughs, and other factors such as interacting in crowded environments. When children are not vaccinated, they are at increased risk for disease and can spread disease to others in their play groups, child care centers, classrooms and communities – including babies who are too young to be fully vaccinated and people with weakened immune systems due to cancer and other health conditions. Visit www.cdc.gov/vaccines for more information and talk to your doctor about a recommended vaccine schedule.

More Herbs, Less Salt How are those herb gardens doing that you planted during the summer? Time to put them to good use! August 29th is More Herbs, Less Salt Day. A national day to remind us to step away from the salt shaker, meant to encourage us to reach for herbs instead of salt. Parsley – This mellow herb gives a bright, grassy flavor that lets other flavors shine through. It mixes well with garlic and basil and is great to add as a finish to soups, pasta, and fish. Sage – This strong, woody herb is delicious with mellow or sweet veggies like carrots and squash and is fantastic with poultry. It adds a classic flavor to soups and stews as well as stuffing and potato dishes. Rosemary – This fragrant, spiny-leafed herb is most commonly used in Mediterranean cooking and is delicious with lamb and chicken. Cilantro – Love Mexican food? Chances are you’ve eaten a lot of this herb. It’s great in fresh salsa, chopped and sprinkled in tacos and in quesadillas. Basil – A classic Italian herb, basil comes in a few varieties such as Thai basil, lemon basil and regular. It’s delicious chopped and added to salads, marinara sauces or on pizza, and it is the main component in pesto. Dill – This mellow herb isn’t just for pickles! Fresh dill is delicious with fish and in potato and mixed green salad. Stir into vegetable soups or homemade dip. Source: www.dreamfieldsfoods.com.

New Hanover County Schools Receive State Funding for Regional CTE High School New Hanover County Schools is pleased to announce that it has received a $1 million grant from the State House of Representatives in the 2016-17 State Budget to help with establishing a Career-Technical Education (CTE) high school. The funds have been allocated to assist with the planning and design phase of the school. The district would especially like to thank Rep. Ted Davis (R – District 19) for advocating for the funding throughout the budgeting process. “New Hanover County Schools is very grateful for the state funding and the support that it will provide for our regional CTE high school,” said NHCS Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley. “Rep. Davis and Speaker of the House Tim Moore understand our desire to plan and build a vocational high school that will be unique to our region, as well as eastern North Carolina.” The future CTE high school will be a joint venture that will include Cape Fear Community College and Pender County Schools, thus offering vocational classes and programs to both New Hanover and Pender County high school students. The New Hanover County Board of Education and Board of Commissioners have discussed the value of a CTE high school for many years. Throughout the last year, representatives from all involved parties have been meeting to begin planning the high school. The state funding will help to advance the project into the next phase. The development of the CTE high school is a result of the economic demands of the Cape Fear region for workforce ready and skilled employees. Graduates of the high school will receive both a high school diploma and industry credentials that will enable them to be readily-employed or advance their degree at a two or four-year college. The students will have the opportunity to take community college classes in their chosen career field while they attend high school courses that will be tailored to their career path.
