“Building Champions, Building Traditions”

V O L U M E 17, I S S U E 1 Laurier’s student-athletes are a shining example of what it means to live a life of leadership and purpose. Our Golden Hawks were Dr. Max Blouw once again a source of immense pride for the university throughout the past academic year. During 2015-16, we witnessed the many wonderful athletic accomplishments of our student-athletes. But what we aren’t able to see on the field, on the court, or on the ice are the accomplishments of our Golden Hawk athletes as dynamic leaders in the classroom and in the community. Laurier athletes are widely known for their academic achievement and tireless volunteer work. These are individuals who develop into leaders at Laurier and go on to engage meaningfully in their careers, in their communities and in their personal lives. This university takes great pride in our athletic programs and the people who make them possible – from the student athletes who balance their academics and volunteer work with their athletic pursuits to the coaches, managers, trainers and athletic staff who give so much of their time and energy to help the Golden Hawks succeed. It is thanks to their passion and dedication that Laurier is able to enjoy such a strong athletic tradition. Congratulations to all of our athletes, coaches and athletic staff for their achievements

Curling Hawks Golden in ‘15-16

The men’s curling team were OUA Champions for the second consecutive season, but traded in the CIS silver for gold as they became national champions.

The Golden Hawks had a bright 2015-16 year highlighting team improvements and individual successes. The height of athletic achievement this year was the men’s curling team bringing home two championship banners as they earned the gold at the OUA and CIS tournaments. The women’s curling team was the only other team to bring home a banner as they earned the OUA title for the second consecutive year. Although they missed out on the gold, the women’s soccer team had a taste of glory as they marched their way to the second tier and an OUA silver medal. The men’s football team saw improvement over their previous season too as the squad not only snatched up the final playoff spot, but also advanced to the semifinals with an outstanding upset victory that highlighted several athletic achievments for the team. Off the court, Laurier’s studentathletes excelled in the classroom as 37 Hawks earned CIS Academic honours and 14 earned OUA Academic honours. In the community, the Laurier Lettermen Club, led by their first female president Tamika Marks-Grant from women’s rugby, led the charge as studentathletes from teams across the department spread the Golden Hawk spirit throughout the Kitchener-Waterloo community. Here is a closer look at your Golden Hawk highlights for 2015-16. Doubling up the hardware this year, the men’s curling team brought home the OUA Championship banner for the second consecutive year and soared to new heights at the CIS Championships. Avenging their defeat in last season’s gold medal game, the Golden Hawks defeated the Alberta Golden

Bears to earn the second gold CIS medal in program history. The achievement marks the end of a five year march up the podium for the team. Aaron Squires earned CIS First Team All-Canadian and OUA First Team All-Star status, Spencer Nuttall earned CIS Second Team All-Canadian and OUA Second Team All-Star status, Richard Krell also earned CIS Second Team All-Canadian honours, and Fraser Reid earned OUA First Team All-Star honours. Assisting the men in earning the sweep of the OUA was the women’s curling team who went undefeated at the provincial championships, hosted in Guelph, to earn the gold medal in back-to-back years. Last year the women earned a national bronze, and went in to the CIS tournament hoping for an even better outcome, but struggled in the first few days and were eliminated from playoffs. Four women were honoured as OUA First Team All-Stars following the season: Evangeline Fortier, Brenda Holloway, Chelsea Brandwood, and Megan Arnold. The Golden Hawks women’s soccer team stayed strong this season with a 12-2-2 conference record to achieve second place in the OUA West and third in the OUA overall. With a three-game win streak concluding their regular season, the Hawks went into OUA playoffs with momentum on their side and took on the Windsor Lancers at home to kick off the post season. A 1-0 victory over Windsor, followed by a 2-1 victory in Ottawa over the OUA East first seeded Gee-Gees set the Hawk women up to take on fifthseeded Queen’s for the gold medal. The Gaels

A Message from Peter Baxter “Raising the Bar” each year in the pursuit of excellence can be a challenge for an Athletic & Recreation Department. Fortunately our people, including coaches, student-athletes, student leaders, and the student Peter Baxter body, continue to reach and surpass that “bar”. This year Laurier won OUA Championships in men and women’s curling, with a CIS crown as well in men’s curling. Women’s soccer achieved silver at the OUA Championship while all hockey and basketball teams earned play-off berths in a highly-competitive OUA. Wilfrid Laurier men’s basketball head coach Peter Campbell, who announced his retirement at the end of last season, was honoured by Canadian Interuniversity Sport on Wednesday night as he was awarded the Jean-Marie De Koninck Coaching Excellence Award. Coach Campbell led Laurier Basketball for 16 years and coached in the OUA for 31 years. The Jean-Marie De Koninck Award recognizes his outstanding contribution to university sport as demonstrated by longterm commitment and leadership as a coach at the local, provincial, and national level. At Laurier, Peter Campbell holds the record as the all-time winningest men’s basketball coach in school history with 150 victories in 326 regular season games. In April, Justin Serresse was appointed to build on Campbell’s legacy, as the new Manager of Men’s Basketball Operations and Head Coach of the Golden Hawks following a national search to fill the position. Coach Serresse, 29, who has served as the lead assistant coach with the Ottawa Gee-Gees for the past five seasons, was successfully selected out of a pool of over 50 applicants to become the 10th head coach in the 53-year history of the Golden Hawks men’s basketball program.

Laurier’s standing in sport and recreation has been strikingly consistent across our teams and programming. Ours is one of a handful of universities in Canada that measures up well across the spectrum of activities, sports, and leadership opportunities. This breadth and depth of excellence speaks volumes about our world-class coaches, gifted students, and dedicated staff. Our coaches and staff are a remarkably varied and energetic group, and we owe them all a huge debt of gratitude. That is perhaps a useful segue to consider the variety of awards, prizes and distinctions earned by our Laurier Athletics and Recreation community— a great many of them by students which are highlighted in the contents of this newsletter. A most special achievement to be proud of is that 51 student-

athletes achieved OUA and CIS Academic All-Canadian status. Laurier student-athletes collectively have a higher graduation rate than the Laurier student population not involved in varsity athletics. Match this with the 45 OUA All-star selections and seven CIS All-Canadian honoured athletes and we truly do have exceptional people who “Inspire Lives of Leadership and Purpose!” The accomplishments of members of Laurier Athletics and Recreation over the past year are all the more remarkable when one considers the landscape of university sport heading into 2016-17. The economic recession has forced deep cuts to athletic and recreation programs across Canada. Laurier has not been immune to this reality. Compounding the problem, Laurier’s student population has grown to 17,000 students and the demand by all fee-paying students for programs, services and facilities are at an all-time high. The global economy is still unsettled. Universities across Canada are facing deep cuts. As a result, there are rapid changes afoot in university sport. The competition in recruiting the top gifted student-athletes has intensified. Other university alumni groups at Guelph, Queen’s and Western have stepped up to ensure that their programs have the resources to enhance these programs. There is no more important time within our history that we need our athletic alumni and supporters to step up also. From my perspective, our ongoing success depends on sustaining timehonoured links to our alumni, sponsors, and friends. This spring, our Laurier students supported a contributed up to $750,000 to fund the replacement of our bleachers within the Athletic Complex gymnasium. Student body investment, volunteerism, alumni donations, and corporate sponsorship have been cornerstones of the Golden Hawk tradition of excellence. Through their generosity— whether they have shared their time, their expertise, or their financial resources in whatever measure— individual students, alumni and friends, along with a range of local and national companies have helped enrich the student experience. They have helped build our buildings, mentor our students— they have built community. We are truly grateful for all this support. I am sure that your experience at Laurier was an important time in your development as a leader. Laurier needs you now to help us remain the destination of choice for top prospective student-athletes. Please consider donating to your sport team where 100% of your donation will go to support our teams and you will be provided with a tax receipt for the full amount. With as little as $100 donated by each former athlete, this annually could raise well over $500,000 of which could help secure and enhance the student-athlete

experience at Laurier. I very much hope we can count on your continued involvement and support in the years ahead. Wilfrid Laurier University continues to meet its mission of being the best Athletic & Recreation program in Canada – a fact confirmed as Laurier was awarded the CIRA Ontario’s Outstanding Intramural Recreation Achievement Award for the 9th consecutive year. A student-leader driven model, Laurier increased our intramural and club programs by 469 participants in 2015-16. In addition, our ongoing success and continued striving to “raise the bar” depends on sustaining our honoured links to our alumni, sponsors, and friends. Through the generosity of volunteerism, philanthropy and corporate sponsorship, alumni, sponsors and friends have helped enrich the student experience at Laurier. Our student-athlete Adopt-a-Hawk program raised $180,000 which went directly to the teams donors wished to support. In a period of fiscal restraint at universities across Ontario, this type of support helps maintain Laurier’s tradition of excellence, something for which we are very extremely grateful. I very much hope we can count on your continued involvement and support in the years ahead. Finally, this year’s Homecoming celebrations will mark the 50th Anniversary of our first football team to reach the “College Bowl”, the predecessor of the Vanier Cup, accomplished by the 1966 men’s football team. In addition, the first team to win a Vanier Cup in Laurier’s history, the 1991 men’s football team, will be celebrated for their victory over the Mount Allison Mounties before what is still the 2nd largest Vanier Cup attendance in history. Please join us both at the induction of the 1991 Teammate Hugh Lawson on Friday September 23rd at the Annual Laurier Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Dinner and at our Homecoming Football Game vs the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday September 24th to honour our 1966 College Bowl Finalists and 1991 Vanier Cup Championship Team. The 2016-17 Golden Hawk year is beginning and I look forward to seeing you in the stands, be it at the field, gym or arena, to help support the Hawks. Go Hawks! Sincerely,

Peter Baxter M.A. Director Athletics and Recreation

This fall, the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawk Hall of Fame will welcome eight new members as part of the 2016 induction class. The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 23 on the campus of Wilfrid Laurier University during Laurier’s annual Homecoming weekend. Liz Knox heads into the Hall of Fame as Laurier women’s hockey’s all-time leader among goaltenders for shutouts, with 35, and minutes played, with 5,973, over her five-year career between 2006 and 2011. Liz Knox An Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Champion during four of her five years, Knox was awarded the CIS Player of the Year in 2009-10 when she posted a 22-0-1 record with a sparkling 0.89 goals against average, a 0.960 save percentage and 11 shutouts. That same season she was also named a CIS First Team All-Canadian, the OUA Player of the Year, an OUA First Team All-Star, the recipient of Laurier’s President’s Award as top female athlete, the Outstanding Woman of Laurier Award and the Luke Fusco Academic Athletic Achievement Award. Over the course of her outstanding career, she was recognized as an OUA AllStar on three other occasions. Alyssa Lagonia also enjoyed an outstanding career while suiting up with the women’s soccer team for four years. A former member of Canada’s U20 national team, she was named the CIS Outstanding Player of the Year in her final season Alyssa Lagonia after orchestrating a Hawks’ offence that scored a then-team record 36 goals, including five of her own, and helping the purple and gold hold down the top spot in the CIS rankings for five consecutive weeks. That same season she also took home CIS First Team All-Canadian honours, was named the OUA West Most Valuable Player, an OUA West First Team All-Star and was the recipient of Laurier’s President’s Award. An OUA Champion in 2010, Lagonia was also named a First Team All-Canadian on one other occasion and an OUA First Team All-Star her three other seasons.

Joining Knox and Lagonia as CIS major award winners in this year’s class is Dillon Heap, a former receiver/returner with the men’s football team. Laurier’s all-time punt return yards leader with 2,071, Heap was the Dillon Heap recipient of the 2011 CIS Russ Jackson Award which recognizes excellence in football, academics and citizenship. The speedy receiver, who won the Yates Cup and Vanier Cup with the Hawks in his rookie season in 2005, was also a member of Laurier Football’s All-Century Team and in 2010 was the first Laurier athlete to be named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-American Team. Over the course of his five-year career, Heap was honoured as a CIS AllCanadian twice, an OUA All-Star six times, including twice in both 2009 and 2011 at different positions, Laurier’s Luke Fusco Academic Athletic Achievement Award twice and Laurier’s President’s Award in 2009-10. Hugh Lawson, a member of the Golden Hawks men’s football team between 1988 and 1992, joins Heap in representing football this year. Lawson, who helped Laurier capture their first Vanier Hugh Lawson Cup championship in 1991, also guided the Hawks to the Yates Cup title that same season while being named an OUAA Second Team All-Star in the process. In his final season with the purple, Lawson was recognized as a CIAU Second Team All-Canadian, along with an OUAA First Team All-Star. Lagonia’s former teammate Tania Pedron will also join the Hall of Fame in 2016. Arguably the top holding midfielder in program history, the five-time OUA All-Star anchored the Hawks to Tania Pedron OUA Championship titles in both 2010 and 2008. The 2010 campaign, one in which Laurier also captured a CIS silver medal, saw Pedron earn the OUA West Most Valuable Player award as Laurier posted an 11-1-2 record. That same season she was named a CIS First Team All-Canadian, the OUA Final Four MVP and Laurier’s President’s Award recipient. In her final year with the Hawks in 2011, Pedron was once again recognized as a CIS All-Canadian while also earning a CIS Academic All-Canadian nod. The final athlete in this year’s induction class is Danielle Inglis, who featured prominently in women’s curling for the Golden Hawks between 2007 and 2010. During her three years with the purple and gold, Inglis captured two CIS

Championships as a vice before taking home a silver medal as skip of her squad in 2010. She also helped the Hawks win the OUA Championship in her first season. In her final year with Laurier, Inglis was named a CIS Second Team Danielle Inglis All-Canadian and took home the CIS Sportsmanship Award. She also represented Laurier internationally as she won the silver medal for Team Canada at the 2009 FISU Winter Universiade in Harbin, China and a gold medal at the Kariuzawa International Bonspiel in 2010. The 2001 men’s soccer team, which captured the second of back-to-back CIS Championships for Wilfrid Laurier University, will enter the Hall of Fame 15 years removed from their championship run. Guided by head coach Barry MacLean, and associate coach Mario Halapir, the powerful squad posted an impressive 9-1-0 record during the regular season with a lineup that featured six OUA First Team All-Stars. 2001 Men’s Soccer In the OUA playoffs, the Hawks posted victories over both the McMaster Marauders and the Toronto Varsity Blues to reach the OUA gold medal match and qualify for the CIS Championship for the second consecutive year. Heading out East to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Laurier earned a 3-3 draw with the Saint Mary’s Huskies before defeating the UQTR Patriotes 4-1 to reach the gold medal match. Laurier would square off with the UBC Thunderbirds for CIS gold and were able to prevail as they won 2-1 to earn the second national championship in program history. Peter Izzio enters the Hall of Fame in the Builders category thanks to his support of Laurier Football and the Athletics and Recreation department as a whole. A member of the Football Corporate Peter Izzio Dinner committee for the past 17 years, he also served on the search committee for the hiring of Head Coach of Laurier Football Michael Faulds and has been an active supporter of many other initiatives, including the Quarterback Club luncheon. A member of the football team between 1986 and 1989, Izzio served as a coach with the team in 1996 and now oversees Izzio Financial Soluntions Inc. under the Sun Life Financial umbrella.

Laurier’s four players, all on the defensive side of the ball, helped limit the East to just 295 yards of total offence, compared to the 472 posted by the West. Highlighting the group was OUA J.P. Metras Award recipient Kwaku Boateng of Milton, Ont., who finished the game with 3.5 total tackles along with a pair of sacks which combined for a loss of eight yards. Hawks linebacker Nakas Onyeka of Brampton, Ont., was also strong in the game as he led the West in tackles with 4.5 in the contest.
