WATERCOLOR WAXING Susan Bourdet's watercolors are done on a heavy-weight archival 100% cotton rag watercolor board. All framing materials are also archival. Once completed, the watercolor painting has been fi nished with a penetrating wax sealer. This fi nish is a combination of bees wax, paraffi n, microcrystalline wax and damar resin, which penetrates the top layers of the painting and seals the surface, protecting it from moisture, dirt and dust. This wax fi nish has been used for a long time in encaustic painting and is often used by

watercolor painters as an alternative to glass. The sealed painting is then framed in the same manner as an oil or acrylic work. The surface needs no maintenance, other than light dusting. Watercolor pigments are formulated these days to have very good lightfastness, comparable to oils and acrylics. As with original artwork in any medium, the painting should not be hung where it will be exposed to strong, direct sunlight. Periodically, the surface may be gently dusted with a clean, dry, soft cloth or vacuumed with a soft brush attachment. Avoid all scrubbing, scraping or the use of water or any cleaning chemicals, as these may damage the painting surface. B

WATERCOLOR vs. GOUACHE PAINTING A primary difference between the two paints is that gouache is more opaque than watercolor. When a layer of watercolor is applied, the white paper and any preliminary drawings underneath will show through, whereas when a layer of gouache is applied, the paper will not show through nearly as much. Gouache is a painting technique in which a gum or an opaque white pigment is added to watercolors to produce opacity. In watercolor the tiny particles of pigment become enmeshed in the fiber of the paper; in gouache the color lies on the surface of the paper, forming a continuous layer, or coating.

Grebe Ballet

oi l pa i n t i ng b y G a r y Jo h n s o n "I canoe weekly at a local lake that is part of the Pacific Flyway for migrating birds. This also has a year-round population of Western Grebes that nest in the winter. I composed this canvas wrap oil painting to not only show the graceful beauty of the grebes, but to show how they churn up the water when they speedily run on the surface. Truly a sight to behold!"

Lakeside Splendor

or igi na l s t u dy – c a n va s pa i n t i ng by T homas Kinkade Studios What constitutes living “the good life?” For some, it is living near the ocean, enjoying the relaxation of life at the beach. To others, it’s traveling around the world, exploring its wonders. For Thomas Kinkade, the good life was time spent at a cozy cabin near a tranquil lake nestled at the base of a mountain. Lakeside Splendor by Thomas Kinkade Studios captures his experience and that of so many who love nature. The late afternoon sun glistens and casts a soft resplendent glow across the hills and lake in the valley below, displaying itself in radiant color. The rhythm of the water lapping against the shore is soothing and calm. Combined with the beautiful sounds of wildlife, this setting has a restorative power, naturally bringing peace to one’s body and mind. Although our daily lives are filled with responsibilities and sometimes stress, everyone should have the chance to relax and enjoy simple things with the ones we love. Whether you find joy in hiking, fishing, exploring, or just spending time sharing stories by a campfire, a restive experience is something you can count on when you spend time in the Great Outdoors, reveling in the lakeside splendor.

Peaceful Valley Vineyard

or igi na l s t u dy – c a n va s pa i n t i ng b y T h o m a s K i n k a d e S t u d i o s “God is truly the giver of all good gifts, and the natural process of growth and harvest each year throughout the globe testifies to this.” – Thomas Kinkade The incredible fruitfulness of the good earth is symbolized in this blossoming vineyard. The rolling hills glow a verdant green in the sunshine, and the ubiquitous hot air balloons seem to drift lazily in the morning sky. The valley fog is retreating as the sun starts to shine brightly on the grapevines. The dogs head off on their day to keep the family’s vineyard safe. Thomas Kinkade Studios invites you to walk down the road and enjoy a taste of Peaceful Valley Vineyard.

Thomas Kinkade’s family heralds from Ireland, and he had a life-long attachment to the Emerald Isle. In Daybreak at Emerald Valley, Thomas Kinkade Studios created an homage to the two masterworks that Thom painted as a tribute to Ireland – Emerald Isle Cottage and Emerald Valley. In Ireland, it seems that stormy rain clouds are forever passing by or roaring in. The morning sunshine breaks through these clouds illuminating the verdant green valley that suggests the bounty of unspoiled nature. The gentle breeze ruffles the leaves in the trees and the wildflowers growing in the field by the quaint cottages. Rocks that have been ripped from the earth to build the fence reference Ireland’s rustic heritage. Daybreak at Emerald Valley celebrates the rich beauty of Ireland, transporting the viewer to its magical countryside.

Sunset at Santa Monica Pier

E

or igi na l s t u dy – c a n va s pa i n t i ng b y T h o m a s Ki n k a d e S t u d i o s Every traveler knows that they have arrived in Santa Monica, California when they see the Santa Monica Pier extending into the inviting waters of the Pacific Ocean with its historic amusement park and its iconic Ferris wheel, brightly lit, welcoming visitors with the promise of fun memories to be made. This historic landmark is known for its breathtaking view of the ocean and for the excitement and joy that it’s brought to visitors for over a century. Although many attractions have come and gone over the decades, the Santa Monica Pier and its adjacent Looff Hippodrome have remained – bastions of beauty and a nostalgic reminder to stop and enjoy life with the ones you love. If one stands perfectly still on the soft beach, reflecting on the colors emanating from the pier and listening to the calliope of sounds bouncing off the water, you will feel the harmonic embrace of man and nature. Thomas Kinkade Studios’ Sunset at Santa Monica Pier brings to life the vibrancy of the setting sun reflecting off the picturesque pier and the magical sounds of fun rolling across the ocean waves. This painting is a celebration of natural beauty and cherished family memories.

"The shapes, nuanced colors, and habit of being most active just before sunrise and just after the sun goes down, lend a mystical quality to Black-crowned Night-Herons. This medium allows the artist to formulate ideas and obtain a basic understanding of the composition of a new piece. Personally, I think that drawings are a method to stay in touch with what an artist is doing. Additionally, they are an opportunity to initiate an art collection that is affordable as well as a view into an artist's initial thoughts regarding a painting. This group of drawings was created for the book 'Brushes with Nature'; a comprehensive view of my life as an artist, but more importantly, my art that I love to share with all."

"I am a definite Dendrophile (tree lover). I love catching the warm lights and cool shadows as I look up through them. None, more so, than Palm trees. Nothing says 'I don’t think we’re in Minnesota anymore' like laying on a beach looking up through those dagger leaves!"

"This beautiful stream setting is about 40 minutes from our home. I love to walk there and just enjoy. When September comes I go and pick mushrooms there."

Modoc Run

The ranch was nestled in the valley between the Warner Mountains on the west and the Alkali Flats of Nevada on the east. Storm clouds are gathering as the ranch horses run through the sagebrush foothills."
