Breeder Profile

District 10: Mauk-E-Way Farm by Mara Budde An up-and-coming herd has found success by investing in deep Registered Holstein pedigrees. Mauk-E-Way Farm has changed a bit from where it originally started. However, one thing remained constant: the passion for dairy cattle. Kyle and Sarah Mauk have been caring for dairy cattle since 1987. Since then, it has become a full family affair with their son Bryan and his family adding many new breeding practices and improving the herd. Kyle and Sarah Mauk started dairying with 13 grade Holsteins. Over the years, the farm has grown to 55 milking cows. In 2008, their son Bryan and wife Brittney introduced Registered Holsteins to the farm. The family’s interest in the registered side of the business was thanks to Brittney who grew up on a Registered Jersey dairy, DayKel Jerseys, in Plymouth. Building their registered herd was possible through the use of embryo transfer, purchasing of older, high scored cows as well as registering the grade Holsteins with years of record keeping. With the herd now completely registered, showing has become an additional focus on the farm. It began with exhibiting animals every now and then, but after the Mauks got connected with the Booth family (Chris & Courtney Booth) they became regulars to the show ring. Once calves get too big for Bryan and Brittney’s children, but still have show promise, they are taken, cared for, and shown by the Booth kids, Cole, Ava, Campbell and Royce. In return, Mauk-E-Way farm houses a few cows for the Booth family. The families have partnered on many Mauk-bred animals, however the Mauks and Booth have only purchased one animal together and she proved to be a good investment for them. Rosedale Hopeless Romantic, EX-90, is a Scientific Demello from a full sister to Rosedale Lexington EX-95. On their first flush to Jordy, Romantic made 15 #1 embryos that were split between the two families.

Romantic’s most successful daughter, Ms Mauk-E-Way Rosa-Red, is scored VG-86 as a two-year-old and had a big run in 2019 as a spring yearling. She was named Junior Champion of the Midwest Spring National Red & White Junior and Open Show as well as Junior Champion of the Midwest Spring National Holstein Junior Show and Reserve Junior Champion of the open show. She did well at the 2019 Wisconsin Championship Red & White Show where she was the Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show and Honorable Mention Junior Champion in the Open Show. A group of Rosa’s red and white herdmates were featured on the cover of Hoard’s Dairyman as a part of their judging contest this winter. One of these animals was Ms Mauk-E-Way Remi-Red-ET,

Premier Breeder and Exhibitor Profiles

It’s often heard at shows from announcers on what an honor it is to receive Premier Breeder or Exhibitor of a show. Sires used: Gold Chip, Tatoo, Felon, Redcloud, King Doc, Crush

Breeding philosophy: Our motto is “Breeding and Feeding for Longevity.” We believe that healthy soil grows quality forage. Quality forages and good cow families develop healthy animals that can stand the test of time. We acknowledge that there is great value in cows that can prove their longevity. We value aAa as a tool to breed a balanced cow, and because of that balance and longevity we are able to sell 25 to 35 milk cows for dairy every year. Over 70% of cows that leave our farm leave for dairy purposes Comment on cows: Four of the six animals exhibited are descendants of our Leadman Ginger cow, who lived to be 16 years of age, was EX-90 4E and made 316,000 pounds of milk on a high forage, low grain diet.

Management Goals: Our management goals are to make high quality feed for higher milk production and components. We also put a lot of focus on cow health and SCC numbers. We breed cows to find the best possible bulls for each individual cow to make the next generation of high production, type, and high longevity cows. Comments on Animals Exhibited at the Show: We exhibited three Senior 3-Year Olds, Mahoney Kingboy Sally VG-86 was first and named Reserve Intermediate Champion, Mahoney Diamond Rose-Red VG-88 was second place and Eachibon Atwood Estella VG-88 was fourth. We breed for long lasting cows who are efficient with a forage-based diet. We are currently seeing progress in our RHA and meeting more reproduction goals with the use of activity tracking collars.. Comments on Animals Exhibited at the Show: At district show, four of our cows, and all three of our class winners, trace back to our foundation cow, Tombeth Jolt Erin EX-94. The Honorable Mention Junior Champion heifer is a daughter of Whitehead Doorman Liquor, the 2019 Wisconsin Championship Holstein Show Reserve Intermediate Champion who came from Missouri with Bailee.

this contest after years of dedication and hours we poured into it. There are also many memories that come from these team awards as opposed to individual ones. It means a lot more when you counted on other people, they counted on you, and you worked together to achieve it. Additionally, the National FFA Dairy Judging contest holds a special place for me, even though we placed third, as it was a large contest, earning us a trip to Scotland, and I placed first individually on the exam. Individually, I cherish my championship in the Intermediate division of the National Holstein Jeopardy contest in 2019, being my first award of that kind and in our home state. What is your training regimen like for Dairy Bowl?

Marie: I have been competing in dairy bowl for five years and have been studying on and off over those five years for both the 4-H and Holstein competitions. My college courses have extended my knowledge beyond the typical dairy bowl sources. In addition, working on my family’s dairy farm has given me hands-on experience and practical knowledge. Katherine: Our training regimen for dairy bowl is average. Before COVID times, we met twice a week for a two-hour practice. We practiced this way for over a year and the consistent studying brought us great success. Grace: We take quizzes, read questions, go out to the barn, and get hands on connections, and listen to questions. Courtney: For our training, it’s always important to start early. You’re never going to learn if you’re cramming information. Reading over the source list is crucial as well, so you don’t waste time studying information you’ll never get asked. Practicing together as a team is important, but it may be even more so to do it on your own. You can only meet and cover so much, that there is much more out there if you’re looking on your own. We always make sure that everyone understands the concept behind a question as well and isn’t just memorizing the question or the words in it. Using buzzers at a practice with your teammates will help for the actual contest. Sometimes you should read questions to your teammates, while other times you should be read to and answering, whichever way you learn best. How often and for how long do you study?

Marie: I study dairy bowl by working on my family’s farm, through my college courses, and by reading dairy related articles, along with studying the material which our coach sends us. Katherine: I studied for dairy bowl on my own often, about every other day, sometimes more sometimes less. I never timed my study sessions as I just did whatever felt right to me; I learn better when I am interested in learning. When I did study on my own, I used the study method that worked best for me, which is to have someone read a question out loud to me. If I didn’t know the answer to the question, I would write it down and go over it the next time I practiced. Grace: We’ve trained every week for 2-3 hours for the past three years. We try to get together once a month and practice for a whole weekend. However, 2021 was different. Due to COVID we all practiced on our own time apart from two weekend-long practices. Courtney: As a team, since 2016, we’ve practiced twice a week, for two hours each practice. Of course, with COVID, things changed. It was more critical than ever to study on your own. I never had a set time I would study, as that can sometimes make it seem more like a chore, when it shouldn’t be. It’s hard to retain information if you’re forcing yourself to read it. I study when I have free time at school, after chores at night, or at any time really. Sometimes it could be for 15 minutes, sometimes two hours, just whenever there’s a chance. Getting closer to contest time, we will take a couple weekends of the

month to practice. Like, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, come and go as you can. What is your favorite part of dairy bowl?

Marie: My favorite part of dairy bowl is growing my knowledge of the dairy industry and showcasing it along with my teammates’ knowledge at various competitions. I also enjoy applying my knowledge on my family’s dairy farm. Katherine: My absolute favorite part of dairy bowl is the friends and memories you make. The people on your team are lifelong friends who you get to have so many amazing experiences with. Every accomplishment we earned brought my teammates and I closer together. Grace: I love learning about cows. I love making connections as I’m working on the farm and really putting my knowledge to work as I’m caring for my cattle. Courtney: The ladies I spend those hours with every practice make it the best. You grow close when spending that much time together, share a passion for dairy, and travel across the country together. It’s building friendships that are going to last a lifetime and creating memories that you’ll hold close. The people and memories are really the best part. The people we meet at the contests from across our state and nation make it outstanding, too. It’s a great way to find those that share the same cow-crazy interests. With that, the knowledge you gain – about dairy and life – is phenomenal. I’ve learned an incredible amount about the industry that can be applied to the farm. It’s a great way to better your knowledge of the industry. What advice would you give to fellow and or future dairy bowlers?

Marie: I would give future dairy bowlers the advice of learning as much as you can and having fun with it. Some ways to do this are reading dairy magazines, taking a dairy class at school, joining dairy judging, working on a farm, or talking with people working in the dairy industry. Katherine: I would recommend to any person wanting to get involved in dairy bowl to go out onto the farm and observe. Yes, you can always memorize your questions and call it a day, but it is way easier to learn questions and is more beneficial to your own knowledge, if you simply go out into the barn and learn everything you can. Grace: The time you put in will affect the outcome of each match, so try your hardest because it will pay off ! Courtney: The first thing that comes to mind is just to have fun with it. It’s good to be intense and have that competitive spirit, honestly that’s really what drives me, but it’s a whole lot more to have a good time with it. You don’t have to win the first time you compete in a contest. Go in the contest room and into practice with a positive attitude, be ready to learn, and make it fun. In your studying process, though, the most important thing is to understand the concept behind everything. Have something to connect what you learned to. When I’m doing chores at the farm, I’m always thinking, “What dairy bowl question relates to this?” I think of questions that relate to the task at hand, like thinking of the benefits of forestripping while I’m milking. Finally, it’s okay to be nervous. How has the Polk County Dairy Bowl team impacted you?

Marie: The Polk County Dairy Bowl team has given me lifelong ties in the dairy industry with my teammates. Grace: Dairy Bowl has helped me learn so much over the past three years. It has fueled my passion for the dairy industry and has helped me choose a career path in this great industry. Courtney: Overall, the Polk County Dairy Bowl team has made See Dairy Bowl, continued on page 34 August/September 2021 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 29

to know she’s still pregnant with routine milk pregnancy testing before dry off. Time to Rest

Least invasive method to confirm pregnancy. Promotes resting time which is associated with improved production. Research shows one hour of lost resting time leads to approximately 3.5 lbs. less milk/cow/day.

Saves Time

Conduct through routine DHI samples or send samples direct. Eliminates time and labor to sort, restrain and palpate animals.

Now is the Time

At 98% accurate, the milk pregnancy test identifies pregnancy status as early as 28-days post breeding until dry off.

Contest Room now the “Activity Room”

You asked, we listened. We’ve heard that juniors were looking for things to do when they weren’t competing in Dairy Jeopardy or Dairy Bowl. The former Contest Room will now be the “Activity Room” and will include the former contests along with new educational and fun activities that juniors can participate in any time the room is open. Additionally, Drawing & Painting and Crafts has been combined into one contest with additional divisions - junior, senior and Jr Convention Princess workshop. More details to come on the Princess workshop! Due to low participation over the last few years, we have eliminated the scrapbook and banner contests. We do encourage groups to bring finished scrapbooks to the Activity Room to display their yearly activities and earn points for the Premier County contest.

Dairy Bowl Contest Deadlines & Resources

The Dairy Bowl contests will be held on Wed. December 29 at the Junior Convention. There will be no seating exam for this year’s contest and brackets will be filled by a random draw. The deadline to enter a team for the 2022 Dairy Bowl contest will be NOVEMBER 15. Entries must be IN OFFICE by this date with paid fees or entry fees will double. The fee to enter teams is $10 for Rookie division and $30 for Junior and Senior divisions. Remember, FEES WILL DOUBLE if the entry form and paid fees are not IN OFFICE by November 15. All potential team member names must be submitted by the November 15 deadline. This allows us to check memberships ahead of the convention and let coaches know who needs to pay membership fees prior to the convention. Please remember, official teams do not need to be named until registration at the Junior Convention. Your entry should include all possible team members, and there is no limit to the number of juniors that can be included on the list. Names must be included with the entry form to make a completed entry. All coaches and participating team members must be members of the Wisconsin Holstein Association. Counties that have juniors wishing to participate on a Wisconsin team must submit their $5.00 entry fee by November 15. This has been put in place so we have a more exact number of teams prior to convention.

Obituaries Charles Nelson

Charles August Nelson, age 88, of Barron, passed away on June 16, 2021. “Grandpa Chuck” made the world a better place, lived life as full as anyone could and passed while napping in his favorite chair… after completing his chores, of course. Chuck was born on April 18, 1933 to Carl and Mildred (Meisegeier) Nelson. He and his parents moved a year later to Lafayette, New Jersey. He attended school there through the seventh grade. Chuck, his sister, Carol Jean, and their parents returned to Barron in June of 1946. He attended high school in Barron, graduating in 1951. Chuck was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was an instructor in the 1st Infantry Division Communication School in Kansas and could still transmit Morse Code at 88 years old! Chuck married his high school sweetheart, Sharlot Nelson, on July 18, 1953. They had two daughters, Karyn and Kathleen. Their son, Steven Charles, died at birth. After his discharge from the Army, Chuck was employed by the Jerome Turkey Industry for 28 years. After leaving Jerome’s, Chuck’s professional life included a salesman for A.O. Smith Harvestore, a loan officer for U.S. Farm & Home Administration, and lastly working with his daughter, son-in-law and grandson in the family “wood shaving business” until 2015. Chuck was a life-long member of the Barron Masonic Lodge (later Blue Hills Lodge), the Indianhead Shrine Club and the American Legion Brown-Selvig Post 212. He was also a member of the Barron

Farm Bureau (director for 12 years), Barron County Fair Association Board of Directors, President of Barron County 4-H Leaders Association, director of the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation, certified Wisconsin County Fair Judge for small animals and dogs and poultry. With his family, he bred and showed registered Suffolk sheep, winning awards at the Minnesota and Wisconsin State Fairs. He also served as state president of the WI Suffolk Association and President of the WI Sheep Breeders Association. He and Sharlot were selected as WI “Shepherds of the Year” in 1967. Chuck was very proud of his involvement with the American Legion Brown-Selvig Post 212. On May 12, 2018, he was thrilled to take part in the Freedom Honor Flight to Washington D.C. for his military contribution during the Korean War. Above all else, Chuck was most grateful for his family. In his own words, “2 daughters you can’t beat, and 6 grandchildren – every one fantastic. I just smile when I think about them. That is what I’m most pleased about. I’m so proud.” Chuck is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sharlot; daughters, Karyn (Robert) Schauf of Barron and Kathy (Kevin) Splett of Almena; 6 grandchildren, Christian Schauf of Park City, UT, Gabriel (Katie) Schauf of Sussex, Zachary (Brooke) Schauf of Barron, Jacob (Ashley) Schauf of Jordan, MN, Kaela (Jake) Sacquitne of Maple Grove, MN, and Kelton Splett of Minneapolis, MN; great-grandchildren, Greta, Gracie, Charlie, Hutton, Carter and Mallory; goddaughter, Alicia (Barry) Wirth of Ridgeland; sister, Carol Jean (Duane) Hegna of Baraboo; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Steven.

Dairy Bowl, continued from page 29

me a better person. I would say it’s developed me into a smart, intelligent, responsible, young woman. It taught me the responsibility of a team effort, how to prepare for these contests, and different study methods. The knowledge I’ve gained has made such an impact. The biggest thing for me is that it gave me a community of people, right within my own county, that enjoy dairy cattle and the dairy industry just as much as I do. How do you plan to use the knowledge that you have gained in Dairy Bowl in the future?

Marie: I plan to use the knowledge that I have gained from dairy bowl to assist me in my future career in the dairy industry. Katherine: There are so many things to learn from dairy bowl. I will use all of my studying techniques as I enter my first year of college. I will also use my knowledge of the dairy industry and the dairy cow to help me do my future job as an agronomist better so I can know the process from seed to manure. Grace: I hope to use the knowledge I have built up over the years in my future career as a calf and heifer specialist. I hope to work with farmers and assist them in growing healthy calves for a strong upcoming generation of milking cows. Courtney: The knowledge I’ve gained through dairy bowl I already apply to my family’s farm. There’s a lot of different questions that allow you to further understand some things, especially if you’re discussing them with each other and learning the concepts behind them. In addition, the knowledge creates a good base for heading into college, especially since I will be staying in dairy science. It will make it easier to catch on faster and keep up in class. It introduces you to a lot of facets as well so you can figure out what really interests you and then even expand on that knowledge. For me, that was nutrition, genetics, and reproduction.

Holstein USA welcomes Tony Brey to the Board of Directors Tony Brey, At-Large Director - Biography

First of all, I would like to say thank you to the Wisconsin breeders who have supported me in my bid for the Holstein USA board of directors and have mentored me over the last thirty-plus years. I returned home to our family farm after graduating from UW-Madison in 2007 with the enthusiasm gained from so many people within this Holstein industry. While we previously had a 60-cow tie stall, we’ve grown continuously to accommodate the next generation. Today, Brey Cycle Farm LLC is a family partnership between my brother, Jacob, myself, and our wives Moriah and Lauren. My wife Moriah and I have two children, Evan (9) and Alexa (4), who are already showing great interest in the farm and Holstein activities. While expanding over the last decade-plus, we always valued the identification and genetics that come with Registered Holsteins. We have a 100 percent registered herd, currently milking 650 cows with an RHA of 30,130 milk 1077 fat and 929 protein. We also raise all our own heifers, 100 beef animals to finish, and custom raise an additional 800 heifers for other farms. We raise the feed for these animals on 1,200 acres on the scenic Door County Peninsula. Our farm has been on Holstein COMPLETE and had our production records processed through ATA for many years. We also utilize genomic testing, classification, and enjoy showing as well. What seems like not long ago I was an enthusiastic junior member and National DJM Semi-Finalist. I have been fortunate to carry on that involvement in our association with activities such as serving on the Holstein USA genetic advancement committee (GAC), co-chairing family night at the 2019 National Holstein Convention, and serving as a voting delegate. I feel it’s essential to the success of Holstein USA to continue to find ways to bridge the gap between the junior and adult members. We need to promote the energy and ideas of our young leaders. One of our favorite programs on our farm is our internship program. This allows us to give back to enthusiastic youth who remind us of ourselves while staying relevant

with the perspective of young people. I also bring the perspective of an active dairy producer who is continually reminded of the market challenges we face as producers. Holstein USA must continue to enhance current programs and create new ones to promote the increased value of the Registered Holstein cow. It has been an exciting year at Registered Holstein sales. High type and deep pedigreed animals have sold exceptionally well from coast to coast so far in 2021. It is great to see Holstein breeders rewarded for the exceptional animals they have bred and developed. However, I think an equally impressive story we must tell as registered breeders is the genetic progress that can be made with Registered Holsteins. I see firsthand on our dairy farm the progress that can be made in production, components, and health through genetics. I firmly believe breeders can make great progress whatever their breeding goals may be. I realize the perfect cow for my farm may be totally different for another breeder in a different environment or milk pricing system. I would like to thank the Wisconsin Holstein Association members for their support and guidance in my running for the Holstein USA board. I consider it an honor to be elected to represent them and other members across the U.S. I look forward to representing our membership and the progress of the Registered Holstein cow. 2021 Adult Membership: 72; Junior Membership: 37 Junior Association Officers: President: Kaianne Hodorff; Vice President: Kaylee Mess; Secretary: Sam Mess; Treasurer: Emily Stumpf; Directors: Dylan Ryan, Kaydence Hodorff, and Grace Clark This past year has been quite the year! Although for most of us it was a slow year, we were still able to do a few things. We started our year off at District Activity Day at Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center in Manitowoc in March. We had one senior and three junior dairy bowl teams compete. Dylan Ryan and Isaac Loehr moved onto the state dairy jeopardy contest in late April. Dylan Ryan then moved onto help represent Wisconsin at National Convention. Also, Fond du Lac County had 12 and Under and YDJM award recipients. For the 12 and Under age division, Dylan Ryan, Cameron Ryan, Miles Rickert, and Leah Mess received an award. For the YDJM, Emily Stumpf, who was also crowned as the 2021 Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess Attendant, received an award. To wrap up the whole day, Fond du Lac County also won the Bell-A-Ring for the second year in a row. We then moved quickly into the summer where we started to go to events. Our wooden cow, Scarlet, who helps us teach kids about how to milk a cow and start great conversations, was at our county fair and a few other events! Manitowoc County

Ulness; Reporter: Laney Neuser; Advisors: Amanda Smith and Nicole Breunig 2020 was a year that showed the commitment and dedication of the Manitowoc County’s Holstein Association. With the closure of the local fair, the Manitowoc County Holstein Association organized the 2020 Manitowoc County Round-Up where judge Austen Schmidt placed 139 animals. Junior Holstein members were excited to have an opportunity to show last summer because of this event. Additionally, the Round Up hosted the Manitowoc County Culver’s Futurity, which was won by Siemers Holsteins with Budjon-Abbott Drmn Annie-ET. In fall 2020, Milkinaire Dairy, the Mark and Vanna Leichtfuss family, opened their 220-cow farm for the Manitowoc County Twilight Meeting! The evening showcased a tremendous farm family with fellowship and camaraderie for all Holstein enthusiasts. The junior members enjoyed selling raffle tickets for the calf raffle and greatly appreciate Milkinaire’s donation of the raffle calf that was won by Ethan Staudinger. The association’s annual banquet concluded fall 2020 by recognizing outstanding members. The 2020 Manitowoc County Younger Holstein Breeder went to Jim Hackmann of Jimtown Holsteins. The 2020 Manitowoc County Distinguished Holstein Breeder was bestowed to Siemers Holsteins. Each year, an Outstanding Junior Member award is given with the 2020 recipient being Bennett Borgwardt. At the Junior Activity Days, Manitowoc had three teams compete in dairy bowl. The senior dairy bowl team, comprised of Lauren Siemers, Clarissa Ulness, Brianna Meyer and Garrett Ulness won the district contest. They went on to compete at the state activity day where they finished second. The senior team is coached by Janina Siemers. Also, Clarissa Ulness was elected to serve on the Junior Activities Committee to represent the Northeast District. The Manitowoc/Calumet Juniors represented with an outstanding 2021 National Holstein Convention. During the National Junior Forum, Brianna Meyer was elected to the National Junior Advisory Committee (JAC) as the Area III representative. The National JAC is the governing body of the Junior Association and oversees the organization’s activities. Brianna placed 2nd in the Senior division of the Prepared Public Speaking Contest at National Convention. Garrett Ulness and Austin Meyer were recognized as YDJM Finalists. At this year’s District 10 show, Abby Meyer placed third in the 12 and under showmanship division. Brianna Meyer placed first in the junior showmanship division. To kick off summer in 2021, the juniors recently had a campfire at Hackmann’s Norstad Farm. It was a great opportunity to get current and future members together to bond as the number of youth in the Manitowoc/Calumet Junior Holstein Association has grown. Sheboygan County
