Premier Breeder and Exhibitor Profiles

It’s often heard at shows from announcers on what an honor it is to receive Premier Breeder or Exhibitor of a show. These awards are a testament to the time and devotion put into breeding and developing a herd of cows and being able to reap those successes at shows. Each farm or breeder who received this honor this year was asked to share their breeding goals and information about their herd. Check out these mini-profiles on these outstanding breeders and exhibitors.

District 1: Premier Breeder and Exhibitor - Crisdhome Farm, The Kruscke Family

Number of cows: 100 RHA: 2x 26,000 4.0% 1040 3.3% 850 BAA: 113.4 Number Shown: 9 with 8 homebred Sires used: Sidekick, Tatoo, Doorman, Warrior, Altitude, Moovin, Honour, Goldchip, Atwood, Dempsey, Defiant, Unix Breeding philosophy: We focus on strong cow families and breed for type with udders, feet & legs and rump width as our main focus. Comment on cows: Crisdhome Goldchp Drunkdial EX-91 is an eighth generation EX Dellia that was Senior and Grand Champion as well as Champion Bred and Owned. Crisdhome Hypnotic Bankston EX-91 was Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion. Crisdhome Durham Crayola-ET EX-94 is an 11th generation EX and was the winning production cow for the second year in a row. Crisdhome Midnight Metalica VG-85 was the first place Senior 2 and Reserve Intermediate Champion and is a descendant of Jake’s old 4-H show cow, Moonlite EX-94.

District 2: Premier Breeder - Welsh-Edge Holsteins, The Petersheim Family

Family Members: Ralph and Sheila Petersheim, Heather (Mike) Metzler, Derek and Justine Petersheim, David Petersheim, Hope Petersheim Location: Viroqua, Wis. Number of cows: 70-80 RHA: 23,700, 3.7, 3.0 BAA:110.6 Number Shown: 4 cows, 2 heifers all homebred Sires used: Gold Chip, Tatoo, Felon, Redcloud, King Doc, Crush Breeding philosophy: Our motto is “Breeding and Feeding for Longevity.” We believe that healthy soil grows quality forage. Quality forages and good cow families develop healthy animals that can stand the test of time. We acknowledge that there is great value in cows that can prove their longevity. We value aAa as a tool to breed a balanced cow, and because of that balance and longevity we are able to sell 25 to 35 milk cows for dairy every year. Over 70% of cows that leave our farm leave for dairy purposes Comment on cows: Four of the six animals exhibited are descendants of our Leadman Ginger cow, who lived to be 16 years of age, was EX-90 4E and made 316,000 pounds of milk on a high forage, low grain diet.

Family Members: Jason, Shelby, & Jordan Weihrouch Location: Melrose, Wis. Number of cows: 13 Holsteins & 27 Brown Swiss BAA: 109.68 Number Shown: 4 cows Management Goals: Our management goals are to make high quality feed for higher milk production and components. We also put a lot of focus on cow health and SCC numbers. We breed cows to find the best possible bulls for each individual cow to make the next generation of high production, type, and high longevity cows. Comments on Animals Exhibited at the Show: We exhibited three Senior 3-Year Olds, Mahoney Kingboy Sally VG-86 was first and named Reserve Intermediate Champion, Mahoney Diamond Rose-Red VG-88 was second place and Eachibon Atwood Estella VG-88 was fourth. We also exhibited 5-year-old, Mahoney Impression Jada EX-91. She was first place and Reserve Grand Champion of the Show. We would like to thank both of our families for breeding such great cattle to work with!

District 3: Premier Breeder and Exhibitor - Tombeth Holsteins, The Kearns Family

Family Members: Tom and Beth, Jason and wife Bailee full-time, Matt and wife Sarah Marie and Sarah part-time. Location: Gays Mills, Wis. Number of cows: 135 RHA: 24,063 BAA: 109.2 Average score: 87 points Number Shown: 9 head, 8 homebred Breeding Philosophies: We breed for longevity. Using aAa mating and sires positive in milk and components we strive to make corrective matings. We breed for long lasting cows who are efficient with a forage-based diet. We are currently seeing progress in our RHA and meeting more reproduction goals with the use of activity tracking collars.. Comments on Animals Exhibited at the Show: At district show, four of our cows, and all three of our class winners, trace back to our foundation cow, Tombeth Jolt Erin EX-94. For heifers - two December calves are direct daughters of our first EX-95 cow, Tombeth Linjet Elouise, who was also named Grand Champion. The Honorable Mention Junior Champion heifer is a daughter of Whitehead Doorman Liquor, the 2019 Wisconsin Championship Holstein Show Reserve Intermediate Champion who came from Missouri with B Bailee. Comments on cows: A lot of work went into the show. We have a great group of family and friends that helps daily on the farm and at shows. We couldn’t do it without them. Our management goals are to give our animals the best health and comfort that we can do and afford since great care comes with a price tag.
