FROZEN HISTORY

LIFE AFTER DEATH The strange but true history of “The Frozen Dead Guy”

F

Trygve Bauge

or the last 24 years, Bredo Morstoel – “Grandpa,” the “Frozen Dead Guy” – soon to be 113, has taken up residence in a Tuff Shed where he remains very, very cold. Suspended in a state of animation above the quaint mountain town of Nederland, Colorado, Grandpa is frozen at a steady minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit and awaiting the big thaw that will bring him back to life. The story that ends with Grandpa in a Tuff Shed starts in Norway by way of California ending in Colorado, involving cryonics, psychics, deportation, a dedicated Ice Man (now Ice Woman) and celebrations. The tale captured international attention and has sparked a well-attended annual event called the Frozen Dead Guy Days.

Life After Death

Bredo Morstoel (Inside the Tuff Shed)

6

Morstoel, lived his whole life in Norway where he enjoyed a comfortable existence as Director of Parks and Recreation in Baerum County for more than 30 years. He loved painting, fishing, skiing, and hiking in the mountains of his homeland.

Frozen Dead Guy Days 2013

It’s after he died from a heart condition in 1989 that things got interesting. His daughter, Aud Morstel, and grandson, Trygve Bauge, were both strong advocates for cryonics and had hoped to start a facility of their own. They packed Grandpa in dry ice and prepared him for international travel, first shipping him to the Trans Time Cryonics Facility in Oakland, Calif. Here, he was placed in liquid nitrogen for almost four years. In 1993 he was moved to Colorado to stay with his daughter and grandson in Nederland – and there he stayed, for years, under cold cover…in a shed. Due to some pesky international visa issues, he was about to be left on his own.

The Grandfather Clause

Bauge, the grandson, was deported from Colorado in 1994 because of a 14 year expired visa. He qualified for amnesty on a 1986 act but refused to file the paperwork on principal. After being forcibly carried on an airplane, Bauge was sent back to Norway, where he lives to this day. Aud, Grandpa’s daughter, moved in to the unfinished home and stepped in to care for the household, including keeping Grandpa cold. Soon, Aud was evicted for living in a house Continues on page 8

FROZEN HISTORY Continued from page 6 with no electricity or plumbing. This meant the family’s dream of a cryonics facility would end. Before Aud was to head back to Norway she spoke to a local reporter about her son’s deportation and casually wondered aloud “what would happen to the bodies.” This comment started the snowball of discovery of the makeshift cryonics chamber, and therefore, Grandpa and another man from Chicago that died of liver failure. With the media coverage, the other man’s family had him shipped back to Chicago and was cremated. Nederland’s Board of Trustees soon passed Section 7-34 of the local Municipal Code, still in effect today thanks to Grandpa, stating that it is illegal to store a frozen human or animal (or any body part thereof) in your home. After being “grand-fathered” in, Morstoel was allowed to stay.

The Iceman Cometh and Go-eth

When an intriguing internet ad posted by Bauge caught Bo Shaffer’s eye in 1995, he

Ice Delivery applied for the one-of-a-kind job and got it. Shaffer came to be known in Nederland as the “Ice Man.” Every month, Shaffer and a team of volunteers delivered 1,600 pounds of dry ice and packed it around Grandpa in his Tuff Shed tomb, surrounded by foam padding, a tarp, and blankets. For 18 years, Shaffer kept Grandpa at a steady -60 degrees Fahrenheit, kept records and gave tours to investigators, inquisitive filmmakers, and amateur sight seers. In some cases psychics have wandered up and have purported to communicate with “Grandpa.” One older account claims Morstoel is amused by the fuss but doing fine, but a more recent visit revealed that

he is quiet and perhaps has moved on. Shaffer felt the weight of this responsibility, knowing how much has been invested in keeping Grandpa in his cryonic state. Shaffer’s participation helped keep the hope alive for Granpa’s family and their faith in cryonics. More locally, he helped bring the Frozen Dead Guy Days, an annual festival in Nederland, into reality of a full-fledged winter celebration attracting thousands worldwide.

New Era of Ice Delivery

In October 2012, news spread that Shaffer had differences with Bauge and Jane Curtis Gazit of Keep Magnolia Clean was hired to take over care for Morstoel. Along with delivering dry ice each month to the Tuff Shed, Gazit, who has a knack for numbers and attention to detail, keeps all the records. Gazit explains that “having the muscles and the time” landed her the position and keeps her employer happy.

It’s a Dead Man’s Party

Frozen Dead Guy Days 2013

Nederland thrives on the colorful, the offbeat, and the weird. Frozen Dead Guy Days, coined “Cryonics’ first Mardi Gras” by Bauge, is a fitting way to end the short days of winter and head into the melting snows of spring. Frozen Dead Guy Days brings a new burst of life with creative contests like the Frozen T-shirt and Brain Freeze and icy events including coffin racing, polar plunging, and frozen salmon tossing. Every March, people travel from around the state, country and world to experience the legacy of Grandpa. Continues on page 10

FDGD HISTORY Continued from page 8 As of late, Grandpa doesn’t celebrate alone. Every year, loyal souls go to the Tuff Shed on the hill to have a drink with Colorado’s best-known Grandfather and then make plans to return the following year.

24 years on ice and counting

This year marks Grandpa’s 24th year on ice and the festival’s 12th year in celebration of this unique landmark. Frozen Dead Guy Days has received media coverage locally and worldwide. It was named by the Chicago Tribune as one the country’s “Top 100 Festivals Not to be Missed.” Video footage of Frozen Dead Guy Days has graced the networks on many broadcasts including Bill Geist’s segment on the “CBS Sunday Morning Show,” the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno,”

CNN, ABC news, PBS features, the Game Show Network and a Belgian reality show. The festival is also “immortalized” by two international award-winning documentaries, Grandpa’s In the Tuff Shed and Grandpa’s Still In The Tuff Shed by the Beeck Sisters. Look for numerous showings during the 2013 event. “Iceman” Bo Shaffer published a book

that chronicled the whole saga of the last two decades, Colorado’s Iceman and the Story of the Frozen Dead Guy. The festival also won the Colorado Governor’s Award for “best promotional event” and was on the cover of the U.S. page of the New York Times. Most recently the event was named in The Lonely Planet & Hotels.com Top 10 lists of “Must Sees.” ◊

We also offer a wide variety of TOURS anytime, day or night!

BLUE BALL

Annual Blue Ball Continues Tradition of Great Frozen Music

By Bruce Lish FDGD Music Coordinator he tradition of truly world class musicians living and growing their craft in the Nederland area continues, and nowhere will this be more evident than at the 2013 Blue Ball on Friday, March 8, at the Black Forest Restaurant. Headlining the 2013 Blue Ball are our friends in Billys’ Rock Billy. The Billys’ plan to shred country and rockabilly in a truly all star Ned fashion; an experience not to be missed from a “monster,” locally-based, “lineup”

T

of nationally-touring musicians that may never share a stage again. Many locals know “Young Billy D” and his first cousin “Billy Dee” – twin sons from different mothers. Billy D has an ultra smooth style with his country guitar licks, while Billy Dee prefers to “chill in the hills, digging the mountains while writing and learning an occasional country standard.” These fellers have invited several of their “second cousins,” all named Billy, and their neighbors (all named Billy, of course), with a few of them sitting in as special guests, to round out this special, all star band. Don’t miss what will certainly be an amazing, unpredictable set. Opening the Blue Ball this year is Gipsy Moon, a young group I can’t say enough

positive things about. Some of these “kids” will always feel like family to me and many other folks around these parts – in some cases, literally. The talent and potential evident in this relative newcomer is obvious to the studious and casual observer alike. With an acoustic gypsy-bluegrass, folky feel; an esthetic and energy that sounds as if born from a previous generation; and strong playing, singing and song writing, we are sure you will enjoy our special choice to start out your first night of the festival. Along with great music, the Blue Ball, as always, features the competition and crowning of the royal Ice Queen, plus the Grandpa Bredo Look-alike Contest. The prizes this year include Front Range helicopter tours from Colorado Heli-Ops.

Bruce Lish Frozen Dead Guy Days Music Coordinator Saxophones Fat Rabbit It is an honor and pleasure for me to be involved in helping grow and organize live music at Frozen Dead Guy Days. As an active member of the Nederland music community for just over 25 years, it’s a nice feeling to be able to bring a local musician’s perspective to this event and, along with the rest of our staff, we sincerely hope you enjoy the excellent, eclectic local and Front Rang eflavored music we have for you this year. After 25 years, I now have a couple of newer ‘generations’ of locals to jam with and I’m happ y to report the tradition of world-class musicians living and growing their craft in the Nederland area continues. Nowhere will this be more evide nt in our 2013 edition of the festival than at the ‘infamous’ Blue Ball. Enjoy!

Shaffer completes his ‘Iceman’s Chronicle’

M

y book, Colorado’s Iceman and the Story of the Frozen Dead Guy, was written in 2010 and published in 2011 right before the 2011 Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival. Since that time there have been a couple of festivals and some interesting developments, and so to complete the Iceman’s Chronicle, an epilogue has been added. The following are excerpts from that epilogue: The 2011 Frozen Dead Guy Days festival was coming together; the previous year I had expressed some disappointment in the fact that the iconic image of grandpa was no longer in use. The head honcho of the festival, Amanda, agreed with me, and that year’s logo had the ghostly iconic image in the eyeball sockets of the usual skull with ski cap. The skull was also done in kind of a tribal theme with the motto “Freeze the Day,” and I thought it all looked pretty good. There was a real effort to include families with the Wild Bear Mountain Ecology Center hosting a Sunday Family Fun Day. The community seemed Continues on page 28

hand up peace sign and the roundabout Opening Ceremonies went off as usual. That night at Grandpa’s Blue Ball, there was a DJ and a couple of small local bands. There were lots of other music in various venues all weekend, but it was a little odd to not have a major band play at the ball. It was also a little odd not to do a

Frozen Dead Guy Days 2013

midnight champagne tour, but that was okay with me since I had a hotel room that night. I went back and rested up for the rest of the weekend. Saturday dawned and we got ready to run the tours out of the spare room on the side of Buffalo Bill’s Coffee. It was fun sitting in the train car looking out the windows at all the people. Unfortunately, we were not able to secure the class rides like the year before due to insurance concerns, but we had rented some black SUVs and we still made a stylin’ parade every time we went on a tour. I had to hurry back from the first tour to get myself into the big Festival Parade, as

I was carrying the Snow King and Queen. The infamous Beeck Sisters were that year’s marshals. It might be nice someday be a marshall and ride for a change, instead of hurrying up and trying to catch up to the end of the parade because you’re carrying the Ice King and Queen, or a radio personality, or Wisconsin Cheeseheads throwing dry ice. (Ah yes, the many hats the Iceman wears.) The parade was a pretty big one this time, with Zach’s Exterminator hearse, the Frightmare Haunted House hearse, an Old West horse-drawn hearse, a motorcycle pulling a flag-draped coffin, and even an Umbrella Corp. hearse, among the dozens of other decked out hearses. Uncle Nasty had his own set of wheels this time, and drove right in front of me in the parade. When the parade was over, it was back to doing tours again. The rest of the festival was pretty uneventful for me, and I went home that Sunday thinking that even though I was getting a little tired of working my butt off delivering ice all year for an ungrateful boss, it wasn’t so bad this year and next year would probably be better. Boy, was I wrong.

The 2012 Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival was shaping up to be a festival to remember. The event was going to be for-profit for the first time. We were introducing the Chocolate Tours and coupled with the local candy maker to make chocolate grandpa’s and chocolate “skullpops.” The logo was the skull in a ski cap holding a frozen grampopsicle, with the windblown scarf. That scarf proved prophetic as the festival, the tours and a lot more got blown away that weekend. And then there was my labor dispute in late 2012 that put an end to the IC Institute... and then there is this year’s 2013 Festival. © 2013 by Bo Shaffer

Keeping Grandpa on Ice S

By Jeffrey V. Smith ome might consider Jane Curtis Gazit a little eccentric for seeking – and accepting – a job supplying dry ice to a “frozen dead guy.” Others, like family and friends, recognize she is the perfect person to oversee one of the most unique jobs in the world. In October last year, Gazit was hired by Trygve Bauge to care for his “Grandpa” Bredo Morstoel by delivering dry ice each month to the Tuff Shed above Nederland where the his body is awaiting re-

30

animation and keeping records. Gazit’s knack for numbers and attention to detail – along with “having the muscles and the time” – landed her the one-of-a-kind position and keeps her employer, who lives in Norway, happy. The previous caretaker, Bo “Iceman” Shaffer, began delivering Morstoel’s dry ice in 1995, but disagreements about monthly reports and payments caused him to part ways from Bauge. After reading about the differences

Frozen Dead Guy Days 2013

between Shaffer and Bauge and need for a new ice delivery person in a Boulder newspaper article last summer, Gazit reached out to the Morstoel’s grandson Trygve Bauge. “I’m local, emailed Trygve, and, in effect, said, ‘if you want someone dependable, select me,’” she explained. Continues on page 32

Continued from page 30 “I’ve been fascinated by cryogenics for some time and thought this would be a good opportunity to learn more. And, I could make a few extra dollars.” The “very committed” Gazit and her partner Michael Wooten deliver 1,800 pounds of dry ice the fourth Wednesday of every month. Wooten, known for his work as Nederland-based Leftover Salmon’s drummer from 1989-97, and Gazit both see the odd work as an “adventure.” “Michael meets me at the ice store in Boulder and we come up together,” Gazit said. “We arrive at the shed, unlock it and open the box [holding Morstoel’s body]; repack ice as needed, and then load in the 1,800 pounds.” The effort, which fills the box “right to the very top” keeps Morstoel at a consistent minus 60 degrees F. In addition to the ice delivery, Gazit also stops by weekly to “check on the level of ice and record the information.” She then re-

32

ports back to Bauge via email. Acting as the occasional tour guide and routine story-teller is yet another facet of the job. Although she was familiar with Morstoel and, being a local, had participated in Frozen Dead Guy Days before

Frozen Dead Guy Days 2013

taking the job, Gazit didn’t know much about Trygve. She has since spoken to him on the phone a few times and finds him to be “pleasant and thorough.” Also, he is “pleased” with Gazit’s record keeping, emails and communication. “I’ve only heard positive comments,” she added. Despite the offbeat task of delivering ice to a dead person, as owner of Keep Magnolia Clean – a local composting, recycling and trash pickup business – Gazit isn’t too far out of her element. She started Keep Magnolia Clean in 2011 and also holds a Master of Public Health degree. Gazit is eco-friendly, an entrepreneur and has a lifelong commitment to community health. Despite her hard work and meticulous record keeping, Gazit does have some doubts about the possibility of reanimating dead bodies. “It’s possible,” she said, “yet as more time goes by, it might become more difficult given the newer technology being used.” Either way, she can still be spooked up at the Tuff Shed. “It’s a very quiet space, so sometimes you hear noises and creaks,” she said. “The wind howls up there…” ◊

The Newly-Dead Game™ returns to Nederland

T

he Newly-Dead Game™ was conceived as a way to help start funeral planning conversations in a fun, non-threatening way. The creator of the game, Gail Rubin, author of A Good Goodbye: Funeral Planning for Those Who Don’t Plan to Die and The Family Plot Blog, sought a way to help families get past the fear of discussing funeral planning. “Couples who have played this game often come away with a fresh appreciation of how much they still need to know about each other when it comes to funeral planning,” said Rubin. “Just as talking about sex won’t make you pregnant, talking about funerals won’t make you dead – and your family really does benefit from the conversation.” The game is based on elements of “The Newlywed Game,” but the questions revolve around how well the couple knows each other regarding their last wishes. The Newly-Dead Game is played by three or four couples with an emcee reading the questions. Four questions What: The Newly-Dead Game are asked, each progressively more challenging, & Funny Films For all regarding elements of the participants’ last Funeral Planning wishes. Festival founder featured as 2013 parade marshal

F Teresa Crush-Warren Teresa Crush-Warren served as President of the Nederland Area Chamber of Commerce and created the idea of a winter festival now known as Frozen Dead Guy Days. For more than 23 years, Warren has owned commercial property in Nederland and operated Off Her Rocker Mercantile, which she closed last year. She also helped form the town’s Downtown Development Authority and served as its Chair for 7 years helping the town get its first sidewalks. Crush-Warren now writes a weekly newspaper column and operates her homebased business, Off Her Rocker Appraisals and Estate Liquidation Services. She has two children. Her son, Jesse, lives in Brooklyn, NY with his wife, and her daughter, Lilly, attends CSU in Ft. Collins and majors in theater.

rozen Dead Guys Days is proud to honor Teresa Crush-Warren as this year’s Grand Marshal at the annual Parade of Hearses. In 2001, Crush-Warren, Nederland’s Chamber of Commerce president at the time, suggested the town capitalize on its “frozen situation,” and helped create the first Frozen Dead Guy Days in 2002. She moved to Colorado in 1981 and has lived on Magnolia Road outside Nederland for over 25 years. This year is especially meaningful to the long-time Nederland business owner as her children will be in town with friends from other parts of the country (and world), “who can’t believe the festival happens.”

In previous years, CrushWarren was too busy to be marshal, but is now retired. “I wanted to give it my blessing, and complete this cycle in my life,” she said. “I also wanted to do it for [festival director] Amanda.” Crush-Warren is featured Saturday in the Parade of Hearses, where her children will join her, and Sunday when she runs the Frozen T-Shirt Contest, “like never before.” ◊
