TAKE NOTE

D

uring the busy gift-buying season, be sure to spend time shopping in your community and supporting local businesses, especially on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30. Many benefits come from staying local and shopping small. Money spent in the community goes back into it in the form of creating employment opportunities. According to the Small Business Administration, the 28 million small businesses in America account for 54 percent of all sales in the U.S. Plus, small businesses have provided 55 percent of all jobs and 66 percent of all new jobs since the 1970s. When you make a purchase at a small business, you are doing your part to stimulate the local economy. Shopping at small businesses helps keep money within the neighborhood. A series of studies by the research firm Civic Economics found 48 percent of purchases at local independent businesses go back into the community compared to less than 14 percent of sales made at chain stores. By shopping at a business in the neighborhood, you’ll most likely stop by other independent retailers in the vicinity. You can also get away from the mass-produced items found at big box chains by shopping at an independent retailer which offer locally-made gifts and products. By participating in Small Business Saturday, you can be sure local independent businesses thrive and continue adding to the vibrancy and uniqueness of a community. Clear Creek County, Evergreen and Central City are great places to browse boutiques and other one-of-a-kind small businesses. From unique dining experiences to shopping and thrilling attractions, there is truly something for everyone in the mountain communities. Visit clearcreekcounty.org, idahospringschamber.org and evergreenchamber.org for lists of shops, restaurants, activities, lodging options and more.

“The Sluice” opened, Aug 21, as the Front Range’s first public, purposebuilt downhill-only mountain bike trail.

‘TRAILS STRIKE FORCE’ ENDS SEASON The Clear Creek County Trails Strike Force wrapped up its third season in October, and is reporting solid progress across the board. Tasked with planning, designing, building and maintaining more than 100 miles of trails within the County, the team uses everything from a UTV, chainsaws, a jackhammer and brute strength to get the job done. And this season, there was a new member of the team: Sadie, the Trail Dog. According to Trails Supervisor James Kovaly, his team of one full-time and three seasonal employees maintained more than 50 miles of trails, and built four miles of new trails with assistance from volunteer groups, youth groups, and professional contractors at the new Floyd Hill Open Space. In addition to the three miles of trail completed on the north side of Floyd Hill above Clear Creek Canyon,“The Sluice” opened on Aug 21, becoming the Front Range’s first public, purpose built downhill-only mountain bike trail. This trail, while built primarily by Flowride Concepts LLC, will be maintained by Clear Creek County and the Colorado Mountain Bike Association. The list of trails the County Trails Crew maintains for other entities is extensive: Bard Creek/Barbour Fork/Silver Dollar Lake and others (U.S. Forest Service), Silver Dale/Rutherford/Saxon Mtn. Road, etc. (Historic District Public Lands); Tom Benhoff Lake-Trail, Purdy and Dunbarton (Georgetown); Clear Creek Greenway (32 miles); Floyd Hill Open Space/Shadows Ranch (Clear Creek Open Space), and more. Three seasons ago, the trails above—and many more—had been untouched for years, falling victim to misuse, disrepair and natural degradation. The team has installed trailhead amenities and gates, removed rocks and fallen trees, repaired bridges, fixed drainage problems and built new trails. Many of the trails are now in good shape for hikers, bikers and other trail users. Although the main season is over, Kovaly is hard at work repairing the equipment from this season, ordering new equipment and supplies needed for next year, updating maps, reviewing trail maintenance and improvement needs with the various land managers and planning the 2020 work schedule. SUMMIT COUNTY

ce Castles, an awe-inspiring, must-see “winter phenomenon that brings fairy tales to life,” returns to Dillon for its third season in December. The unique experience is built using hundreds of thousands of icicles hand-placed by professional ice artists. The castles include breathtaking LEDlit sculptures, frozen thrones, ice-carved tunnels, slides, and fountains. The Dillon location is expected to open in midDecember if the weather cooperates. Construction begins on the “icy wonderland” in Dillon in November when build crews turn on water and began growing icicles—the primary building material for the acre-sized attraction. Each day, 20-40 “ice artisans” grow and harvest up to 10,000 icicles to build the winter experience. Each of those

icicles is then hand-placed and sprayed with water. The process is repeated until the castles reach heights of around 30 feet. This year’s castles in Dillon will also feature ice-carved slides, tunnels, fountains, crawl spaces and more. The team of artisans in Dillon will spend a combined 4,000 hours dripping, shaping, and hand-placing the icicles, while embedding the structures with color-changing LED lights to create a life-size winter playground. The concept for Ice Castles was created when founder and Utah resident Brent Christensen attempted to build an ice cave for his daughter in the front yard of his home in Alpine, Utah. The project turned into a winter hit drawing crowds of locals. Visit www.icecastles.com and facebook.com/TheIceCastles to learn more about the attraction and its opening date.

COVER STORY

Alpine ski, board season kicks off early with resort improvements, new options

C

olorado’s 2019-20 ski season is underway with an abundance of natural snow. A “high-energy crowd” of skiers and snowboarders celebrated the official start of the season in Colorado and North America, Oct. 11, when Arapahoe Basin Ski Area opened at 3:30 p.m. The opening followed an announcement from Keystone that it would open Oct. 12, its earliest opening in more than 20 years. “We did this because the snow is really good, our people are anxious and we are ready to go. We thought it would be fun,” Arapahoe Basin COO Alan Henceroth said. Keystone, which made significant investments to its snowmaking infrastructure over the summer, opened, Oct. 12. Thanks to the investments and ideal early season temperatures, Keystone gave A-Basin some new first-to-open competition this year. After a short warm spell that slowed snowmaking, Loveland Ski Area received more than a foot of natural snowfall and opened Oct. 25. Eldora announced it opens for alpine skiing and riding on Nov. 1, a full two weeks ahead of schedule, one week ahead of last winter and three weeks ahead of its historic average. It is the resort’s earliest opening in 22 years. Opening day signals the start of another world-class winter in Colorado, where life-long skiers, new participants and those looking to enjoy the mountain environment can enjoy

CLEAR CREEK

Colorado’s consistently great winter conditions, bluebird skies and warm welcome. Colorado Ski Country USA member resorts—including Loveland, Echo Mountain, Arapahoe Basin, Winter Park, Eldora, Copper Mountain and Granby Ranch—as well as Vail Resortsowned ski areas Breckenridge and Keystone—spent the offseason working on significant capital infrastructure improvements, new lodging options, dining experiences and more. In addition to improvements that seasoned skiers and riders will enjoy, ski areas in the region are also offering a wide variety of guest enhancements and learning options that brand-new skiers and riders, or those returning the sport after some time away, will be excited about. Arapahoe Basin Ski Area After completing a 468-acre terrain expansion into the Beavers and the Steep Gullies last season—including the new four-person Beavers chairlift—A-Basin is continuing to upgrade its facilities. This is the first full season of Il Rifugo, the highest lift-served restaurant in North America at just over 12,500 feet. A-Basin will also have newly remodeled bathrooms in the basement of the main lodge. For this season, A-Basin changed its pass partnerships in an effort to reduce ski and snowboard visits on weekends and holidays and to improve the quality of the guest experience. A-Basin

can now be accessed on a limited basis on the Ikon Pass, Ikon Base Pass and Mountain Collective Pass. The only way to ski A-Basin more than seven days without blackout dates is to purchase an A-Basin pass for the 2019-20 season. Copper Mountain This season, Copper Mountain visitors can explore 273 acres of expert terrain on Tucker Mountain with the new Three Bears chairlift. The three-person fixed grip lift—topping out at 12,421 feet— accesses terrain that was previously accessible via snowcat or hiking only. Guests can enjoy a warming hut at the top of the lift and bathrooms at the bottom. Copper Mountain has also begun construction on a new 127-room, four-story hotel with anticipated completion as early as 2020. Echo Mountain Resort After opening its tubing hill last season, Echo Mountain is adding a new food truck, Two Mile Pie, serving pizza, drinks and snacks throughout the winter. Access to the tubing hill will also be more convenient with a new staircase and a new deck outside the rental shop. In addition to enjoying Echo’s emphasis on a non-judgmental atmosphere, guests can also purchase new pass products like the Night Season Pass or Midweek Season Pass for under $100. Eldora Eldora introduces new buses in its parking lots this season to create an improved experience for guests. It is also finalizing a rideshare app that will help connect guests to facilitate carpooling and reduce traffic. Terrain park enthusiasts will be excited about Eldora’s new Zaugg terrain-shaping machine, which allows the park crew to create consistent and innovative park features all winter. The rental shop also features a new tuning machine helping guests to quickly receive ski and snowboard care. Granby Ranch Granby Ranch replaced 5,000 feet of snowmaking pipe for this season. It will allow the ski area to open all blue runs on opening day. Granby Ranch’s new food and beverage team is offering specific themed dinner options for guests on Wednesday nights throughout the season. For the second season, Granby CLEAR CREEK

Ranch also offers groups the opportunity to rent the East Mountain for the evening including night skiing. Loveland Ski Area A year after debuting the new Chet’s Dream chairlift, Loveland is partnering with the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Snowstang for the upcoming season. A roundtrip ticket on the new direct bus service will cost $25 with discounts for seniors, children and disabled passengers. Guests can be picked up at Union Station in Denver and the Denver Federal Center. Snowstang will run on weekends, Dec. 12 through mid-April, and some holidays. Winter Park Resort A new 6-person Sunnyside chair was installed for this season, replacing an old 3-person fixed grip chair in one of the most popular areas of the resort. The $6 million upgrade will reduce ride time from eight minutes to under four minutes and reduce lift lines at the bottom of Parsenn Bowl. For the first time, Winter Park will also offer guests guided off mountain adventures like nighttime experiences or backcountry skiing or riding. Breckenridge & Keystone resorts Vail Resorts is also excited about improvements made at its Summit County resorts, Breckenridge and Keystone. New for this season, the Epic Day Pass allows guests to ski its resorts for up to half off window prices for a little as one day. Also introduced are the Keystone Plus Pass—which provides unlimited access to Keystone, unlimited late spring skiing at Breckenridge and five days at Crested Butte—and the Keystone Crested Butte 4-Pack—which offers any four days at Keystone and Crested Butte. Breckenridge, which has pushed it closing date to Memorial Day this season, has transformed the Peak 8 Base Area. This winter, guests will be greeted with a whole new look and feel, new locations for tickets and rentals as well as new amenities including an outdoor ice skating rink, coffee shop, public restrooms and town transit stop. Also, Gravity Haus Breckenridge replaces the former Village Hotel at the base of Breckenridge Ski Resort’s Peak 9. The renovated and techforward ski-in/ ski-out boutique property debuts in December.

The path to realizing a lifelong dream isn’t always easy to navigate. For Bequi Huff and Larry Dungan, it took plenty of patience, hard work and a stint in downtown Denver before they were able to open Edelweiss Pastry Shop in Idaho Springs. It’s paid off; for them and anyone who’s ever enjoyed any of their delicious, smallbatch, Old-World European creations. Huff, who has been baking much of her life, comes from a family with a long history of baking, including a family-owned bakery in Germany. In 1977, when she was 10, her Bavarian-born mother opened Rosie’s Little Bavarian Restaurant in Glenwood Springs. Huff began helping in the kitchen early on and within a few years was learning how to bake. She continued to gain high-altitude baking experience at the restaurant until it was sold in 2000. Soon after, Huff took her skills to Redstone and opened the Kauffeegarten. A poor economy and the need to pay rent in winter when the business was closed kept it from thriving, but by doing “everything,” she learned how to run a business and that baking is her true passion. “It was more of a trial anyway,” Huff explained. “I wanted to see if just the pastries would sell. That was the thing I liked doing the most.” After Redstone, Huff began waiting tables while Dungan, her partner since 1988, waited to be promoted by the Colorado Department of Transportation to a position in Denver. When the long-awaited promotion finally came, the move to Denver required time apart, then seven years in a downtown high-rise. Out of her comfort zone and finding it difficult to get a job, Huff persevered and continued to dream of owning a bakery again. “I didn’t really care for Denver… it was way out of my lexicon for sure,” Huff said. “Larry just said, ‘do what you can and be patient. I am going to retire in a few years, and we’ll go back to the hills and buy something,’” He was right. When Dungan’s retirement drew near, the CLEAR CREEK

couple found “an opportunity” in downtown Idaho Springs that fit the bill. Dugan purchased the historic building on Miner Street in 2016 and began cleaning, making repairs, building a kitchen and creating a welcoming space. By September 2017, Edelweiss was open for business. It didn’t take long for people to discover Huff’s baking talents and tasty family recipes from Germany. Now, just over two years in, the couple’s retirement dream includes working harder than ever. “It is way busier than I ever expected it to be,” Huff said. “It gets difficult to keep all the handmade stuff stocked up. We bake constantly all day long.” The couple now spends most every day—except Tuesdays when they’re closed—creating European treats including eclairs, Napoleons, cinnamon rolls, turnovers, strudels, quiche, stuffed croissants, cookies, roasted almonds, beer pretzels and a wide range of special orders. Huff’s Napoleons are the shop’s most popular item. She regularly sells out to visitors from out of town who arrive with coolers to buy all they can. The stuffed croissants—including ham and swiss, bacon and cheddar and spinach and feta—are also becoming a top seller. Things really get busy as Christmas approaches. Huff spends a lot of time doing “extras,” including making Christmas Stollen, which involves soaking fruit in rum overnight, making marzipan and a sweet dough. The popularity of item “shocked” Huff, who sold 8-10 a day last year. She plans to again make them all through December along with a variety of Christmas cookies and special-order torts. The European bakery offers gluten-free and vegetarian items when possible, but Huff won’t do vegan. “I’m European and it’s all about the butter and the cream and eggs,” she explained. Be sure to stop in early if looking for something in particular as items often sell out. “It’s all handmade. It’s not a factory, so I have a tendency to run out of things. I try really hard to keep up with it… if I run out don’t get mad. I will make more, I promise.” If making a special order, allow at least three-day notice. It’ll be worth the wait.
