TAKE NOTE

T

here are plenty of things to celebrate in June including our dads on Fathers Day, June 16 and warm weather on the Summer Solstice, June 21. Don’t overlook celebrating our county’s flag and what it represents when Flag Day comes around, June 14. The first celebration of the U.S. Flag’s birthday was held in 1877 on the 100th anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777. However, it is believed that the first annual recognition of the flag’s birthday dates back to 1885 when school teacher, BJ Cigrand, first organized a group of Wisconsin school children to observe June 14, the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes as the Flag’s Birthday. Cigrand, now known as the “Father of Flag Day,” continued to publicly advocate the observance of June 14 as the flag’s “birthday” or “Flag Day” for years. The first formal observance of Flag Day on June 14 was by the New York State Board of Education. Over the following years as many as 36 state and local governments began adopting the annual observance. For more than 30 years Flag Day remained a state and local celebration. In 1916, the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 became a nationally observed event by a proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson. However, it was not designated as National Flag Day until Aug. 3, 1949, when an Act of Congress designated June 14th of each year as National Flag Day. On Flag Day, citizens are asked to consider the meaning behind the banner that has served as “a guiding symbol on our nation’s journey, while celebrating the hope it inspires in the American people.” The Clear Creek County Veterans Coalition along with the Idaho Springs Elks Lodge sponsor an annual Flag Day Ceremony. Watch for details.

GOLD PANNING CHAMPIONSHIPS

DID YOU KNOW? Crews are building a $2.5 million two-lane bridge on I-70 over Clear Creek west of Idaho Springs at Exit 238, between Stanley Road and Fall River Road. Construction continues through November. The project involves elevating Stanley Road to meet the profile of the new bridge in addition to adding a 10-foot-wide raised sidewalk, barrier, guardrail and lighting to increase safety for bicyclists and pedestrians. They are also making drainage improvements, erecting signs and adding striping. Rafting companies were involved in the design process so the bridge’s design will not impact any rafters or kayakers, which is why CDOT is raising Stanley Road by about four feet. Construction will not impact rafting. Also, there are no proposed bicycle or pedestrian restrictions on Stanley Road or Fall River Road for the duration of the project. Working hours are 7 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Thursday, and 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday. There is no weekend or holiday work. Stanley Road is reduced to one lane, with two-way travel directed by temporary traffic signals. Later in 2019, the Eastbound I-70 off-ramp to Fall River Road will be closed for paving. HISTORIC CLEAR CREEK COUNTY HIKING TRAILS

Recreational activities like hiking have always been an important way people have experienced Colorado. Even in the 19th century, informal, and eventually more formal, trails formed at the most popular hiking spots around Clear Creek County, including Naylor Lake south of Georgetown and James Peak near St. Mary’s Glacier. While 20th-century roads replaced some trails, others remain largely unchanged.

By Jeffrey V. Smith IDAHO SPRINGS immy Funkhouser founded FERAL, an independent Denver-based outdoor gear shop, in 2016 with the purpose to “create adventure.” He has always been passionate about getting people outside and up the mountain and created a business that could help him fulfill that mission. Last June, he elevated this vision by opening a second retail store in Idaho Springs, a favorite place of his to visit. “I think the biggest thing we are trying to accomplish here is to just be a locally-owned outdoor gear shop that services the needs of anyone, including the locals… we just want to be kind of a core outdoor gear shop that is here for a long time in a town we are proud to be a part of,” Funkhouser explained. He chose Idaho Springs to open a second location because he has always been fond of the town. “Honestly, the biggest prompt was that I love Idaho Springs personally. I much prefer the towns of Colorado that are holding on to their historic edge a little bit,” he said. “There just aren’t very many towns like Idaho Springs left that have enough traffic to support a business, but also still maintains its historical context as well. We just love that about it.” The first year has been “good,” according to Funkhouser, but it’s also been educational. “We’ve gotten a lot of support from the community, and it’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “I think for us, the biggest lesson from the first year is just understanding seasonality and how we approach our business during the winter and some of those months of mud season. It’s very different. Idaho Springs is still shifting

more and more towards a lot of visitors from out of town. With that comes significant peaks and valleys based upon seasons.” According to the owner, more than 90 percent of the people that walk into the Idaho Springs shop are from out of state, not just out of town. “We’re very heavy on the visitor side of things. In Denver… 90 percent of our customers live within two miles of the shop.” When he first opened, Funkhouser stocked the same gear as he did in Denver but found out very quickly that it wasn’t going to work. “That’s not a sustainable model for us,” he said. The store now features a wide range of merchandise branded with the FERAL name in addition to outdoor gear mainstays. “We are our best-selling brand,” Funkhouser said. “When people are in town, they are looking to take something home with them that’s a local thing.” FERAL also offers an extensive map room. “I think the core function of an outdoor gear shop is to act as kind of a connector between people and the outdoors. The map room is kind of where that happens a lot, especially in a shop where 90 percent of the people that walk in are from out of town.” Funkhouser said. “We want to be one of those places people can stop in for local knowledge, local tips and tricks.” Watch for new additions at the store soon. Funkhouser expects to launch used gear sales by the end of the summer and then begin to offer rental gear including camping gear, backpacking gear, backpacks, tents and sleeping bags. Stop by the store to meet Funkhouser— who will be accompanied by his dogs Ace and Sophie—or Josiah Cilladi. Be sure to mention you’re a local to receive a 10 percent discount.

Trail Time Clear Creek County focuses on improving its trails

By Jeffrey V. Smith CLEAR CREEK COUNTY lear Creek County has some of the best trails in Colorado. With over 300 square miles of public land, mountainous terrain, and a population of less than 10,000 people, most of the more than 100 miles of multi-use trails within the county used to remain relatively uncrowded. While local trails are not as overwhelmed as those in nearby Jefferson and Summit counties, times are changing. Although Clear Creek County’s trails are tremendously important to it’s wide-ranging recreational offerings and shifting economy, until two years ago—when the county hired James Kovaly as its first Trails Supervisor—it was difficult to tell. Many miles of trails located within the county had been untouched by trail crews for decades yet were experiencing increased use due to an expanding population and an increased awareness of the county’s recreational assets. The past two years, Kovaly and his Trail Crew of three seasonal Trail Technicians, and one official Trail Dog, have worked with a wide variety of owners, agencies, volunteer organizations and trail managers to install trailheads, signs, kiosks, trash cans and gates; remove rocks and fallen trees; repair bridges; fix drainage problems; improve parking; and build new trails. Last winter, Kovaly worked with the County GIS Department and the Clear Creek Tourism Bureau to create a map describing 37 popular trails in the county. It can be found in county visitor centers, outdoor stores and tourist attractions. “It’s hard to believe this is our third season already, and I’m very excited to get our team together to continue the great work we’ve done around the county,” Kovaly said. The mission of the Clear Creek Trails Crew is to collaborate with land managers to maintain existing trails, and assist with the planning, design and building of new trails “to facilitate outdoor exploration and provide fun and adventure” for hikers, mountain bikers, trail runners, back country skiers, motorized off-highway vehicle users and other recreational trail use.

The Clear Creek Trail Crew partners with volunteer organizations including Teamworks (pictured) to build trails.

“Clear Creek County has really realized that recreation is one of our top priorities, and that’s identified by the Board of County Commissioner,” Kovaly explained, “especially with the decline of all the mining. It’s like we better start managing this, or we are going to get overrun… and there’s a lot of economic benefit to increased recreation.” Kovaly has accomplished much in his short time as Trails Supervisor, despite limited help and a “tiny” budget. The Purdy and Dunbarton trails, located on Georgetown property, were re-aligned to significantly improve route finding, vegetation was cut back, drainage problems were resolved, turns were created, and signs were installed at the top and bottom of both trails. The Silver Dale, Silver Creek, Rutherford, Argentine Central and 7:30 Mine trails near Silver Plume and Georgetown— managed by the Historic District Public Lands Commission— are considered “marquee” trails in the county and remain “truly historic” in nature. Work was done to remove fallen trees, cut back vegetation and improve drainage and trail definition. With help from the HDPLC and County GIS Department, legitimate trails were determined and “social” trails eliminated. Signage was installed throughout the trail systems to improve route finding and almost four dozen historic markers were installed. Other improvements include new kiosk signs at trailheads and a port-a-potty at the Silver Dale trailhead. Other trails, including Union Pass and Tom Benhoff LakeTrail were determined to have numerous unofficial “connections” with vague routes, map inconsistencies and an overall lack of signage. Again, fallen trees and overgrown vegetation were removed and drainage and trail definition improved. Trail rehabilitation and trail re-alignments were performed as needed and signage was installed at the trailheads and along the trails as needed. Additionally, the county Trails Crew has an agreement with the U.S. Forest Service to maintain 10 trails in the county. This includes Bard Creek, Trail 48 at Barbour Fork,

Watrous Gulch, Kearney Gulch, Hassell Lake, Stanley Spur, Clear Lake Day Use Area and others. Fallen trees have been removed, overgrown vegetation cut back and trail rehabilitation and re-alignments were made. Drainage, grade and trail definition improvements were also addressed. As part of its vision to build, repair and maintain trails in the county—and in response to public request and to improve cyclist safety along the 32-mile paved Greenway trail running the length of the County—the Trails Crew sweeps the entire length of the trail, including interconnecting bike lanes along the frontage roads from May-October. In winter, a snow groomer is used to maintain the Bakerville-Loveland Trail for snowshoers, cross country skiers and fat bikers “to enhance the experience for County residents and visitors alike.” In addition to trail maintenance and trailhead improvements, the Trails Crew also helps create new trails. Currently, its biggest trail-building project is on the recently acquired 600-acre Floyd Hill Open Space at Interstate 70 Exit 247. The purchase creates contiguous access to county land from U.S. 40 to the Peaks-toPlains Trail at U.S. 6 in Clear Creek Canyon. Trail work began in 2017 and continues through 2020 when a 12-mile trail system—including a one-of-a-kind, bikeonly, downhill-only trail—is complete. “Last year, the trails crew, in collaboration with volunteer organizations such as COMBA, Colorado Mountain Bike Association, Volunteer Outdoor Colorado and other groups, we built four miles of trail,” Kovaly said. “Those are open and being used. This year we are building another four miles of trail including the one-mile downhill-only bike trail, which we’ve contracted out to a professional trail builder.” According to Kovaly, the downhillonly trail is the first of its kind anywhere in the region. “We don’t have a downhill, bike-only trail of this magnitude anywhere on the Front Range,” Kovaly said. “You’d have to go to a lift-served trail at Winter Park or Keystone.” Additionally, with help from volunteer organizations including the Colorado Mountain Bike Association, the Trails Crew will build another three miles of trail this summer on the back side of Floyd Hill to

connect to the existing four miles. The final four miles will be built next year. “We’re excited to work with our key partners around the region, making Clear Creek County a premier place to recreate,” Kovaly said. New to the Trail Crew this year is Sadie the Trail Dog, which is also Kovaly’s canine companion. “She just loves hanging out on the trail with us and when we have volunteers out, she keeps them all company,” he said, “but she just loves being out on the trail and we love having her with us.” Apart from the county’s work, Idaho Springs is moving fast to establish trails in its newly annexed Virginia Canyon Open Space. The city has received grants and recently hired a trail designer. A plan is expected by the end of summer. Work is also on-going with establishing the Clear Creek Greenway and Peaks to Plains Trail through the county. Currently, sections of the trails have been completed, while others are being built, widened or paved. Idaho Springs is currently building and adding bridges to the portion of the trails routed through town. Also separate from the county’s work, the U.S. Forest Service and Colorado Fourteeners Initiative is beginning work this summer to restore trails to Grays Peak and Torreys Peak, a pair of 14ers located in the county. The work to improve trail conditions and sustainability is expected to last three years. A nearly two-mile Silver Plume to Georgetown Trail Improvement Project by CDOT has started and is scheduled to be completed the week of June 24. The trail is closed during construction. While Kovaly understands that many county residents would like local trails CLEAR CREEK

to remain as they have been for the past 50 years, but overcrowding in Jefferson County and overall population growth in Colorado is mandating change. “People are coming here, and you can’t stop them from coming here and using public lands. So, you either ignore it and your infrastructure gets overrun and people just wander through the woods and create their own trails, or you manage it,” Kovaly said. “You manage it, you put up signage, you clearly define where the trails are and which trails are supposed to be used and then all your stuff doesn’t get torn up. That’s what everybody needs to understand. It’s for the benefit of the trails and all the users.” Learn more about the county’s trails, and future projects, at clearcreekcounty. org and co.clear-creek.co.us. connection to the area—is by visiting the many museums across the region. With numerous museums in the mountain communities from Silver Plume to Evergreen, and many more in nearby metro area towns, no matter which direction you’re headed, you’re bound to be near a museum to delve into the past and take a step back in time. In many parts of the country, museums are a great wintertime or rainy day activity. Around here, many of the attractions are only open between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, so visiting a local museum has to fit into summer plans.

The variety of museums in this small, rural part of Colorado is surprising. While many feature the general history of a specific area—like the George Rowe Museum in Silver Plume, Heritage Museum in Idaho Springs and Gilpin History Museum in Central City—others focus on mining, fire fighting, energy production and pioneer living. All of them are unique. While setting aside time for special activities this summer, don’t forget to plan a visit to a local museum to expand your knowledge and appreciation for the region and its not too distant past. Watch for special museum events throughout the summer, too.
