TAKE NOTE

J

anuary is National Blood Donor Month, declared by President Richard Nixon in 1970, to pay tribute to voluntary blood donors and increase donation by others. Blood donations typically drop off during and immediately after the winter holidays, which makes Blood Donor Month a critical time for the American Red Cross. Busy schedules, holiday breaks from school, inclement weather and winter illnesses contribute to fewer blood and platelet donations. Since December, severe winter weather has forced the Red Cross to cancel dozens of blood drives, leaving hundreds of donations uncollected. This poses quite a challenge since the need for blood doesn’t take a holiday nor diminish because a snowstorm hits. The Red Cross needs to collect more than 13,000 donations every day to keep the blood supply ready and available to meet the needs of about 2,600 hospitals, clinics and cancer centers across the country. Although an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood at any given time, less than 10 percent actually do. The Red Cross, which provides about 40 percent of blood in the U.S., hopes to change that. The organization is seeking new donors in the new year to step up to help meet the needs of patients battling cancer and other conditions or disorders, individuals undergoing surgery and victims of accidents or violent acts such as last year’s mass shootings. Eligible blood and platelet donors are urged to schedule a donation today by using the Red Cross Blood Donor app, visiting redcrossblood. org or calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-7332767). Help even more people by inviting your sister, daughter or other family members, friends and colleagues to donate too.

Yoga studio connects mind, body

Y

By Jeffrey V. Smith

oga is for everyone, no matter their age or ability, according to The Yoga Room owner and instructor Cherie Ebert. She says it is “self-healing at the highest level” and good for all bodies. Her yoga studio, “nestled” behind Two Brothers Deli in downtown Idaho Springs, offers on-going “dynamic and therapeutic” yoga classes, retreats, workshops and private instruction for any level, seven days a week. All classes are geared for all abilities making it easy for anyone to keep a resolution or begin a new and healthy routine. “We just have one or two classes a day. All the teachers here, and me especially, are skilled at taking the experienced practitioner and allowing them to go deeper into the poses while supporting the beginners,” Ebert said. Integrating her knowledge of anatomy, alignment, Sanskrit, Ayurveda, essential oils and yoga with her “sense of lightness and exploration,” Ebert—a 30-year Clear Creek County resident—offers “fun, challenging and uplifting” classes. She earned her 500-hour-level teacher certification with Tias Little at Prajna Yoga and founded The Yoga Room 11 years ago behind the Two Brothers Deli—which she and her husband, Dan, own and operate. In addition to running the studio, she teaches classes, workshops, private sessions and retreats. According to Ebert, anyone may drop in on the studio’s on-going classes at any time, and since everyone’s first class is free, there is no risk. Interested guests are asked to wear comfortable clothing, but everything else, including mats and props, are available for free. “It’s a misunderstanding you have to be flexible to do yoga,” Ebert explained. “You may get more flexible by doing yoga, but you don’t need to be flexible in order to go to a class. It’s CLEAR CREEK

a very friendly environment. I have a base of some regular people that come, but a lot of connections have been made, friendships and relationships, throughout the years.” Most of the classes are an hour or 75 minutes and themed. “[Patrons] can pretty much expect an hour to stay on their mat. There are standing poses, seated poses, forward bends, back bends and twists and sometimes inversions… nothing scary,” Ebert said. Among the many benefits of yoga, it can calm the nervous system and combat stress, invigorate and open the heart, detoxify the abdominal organs and ignite creativity, aid in digestion, promote deep sleep and build strength in the bones. It also connects mind and body and, according to many, has ability to affect all aspects of your life. “The amazing thing about the yoga practice is that it’s very therapeutic,” Ebert said. “We address a lot of conditions like scoliosis, a lot of knee replacements, hip replacements… but all the classes are geared towards all levels of ability. If you have some issues where you can’t sit on the floor, we have chairs.” One of the best things about starting practice is that it’s easier than most forms of exercise to stay on track. “The beautiful thing is a yoga practice, within itself, is very sustainable,” Ebert said. “It’s not something so physically challenging that you are going to burn out. You will definitely see results over time, you will feel more connection between the body and the mind.” She says once those connections are experienced, it’s easy for most people to continue. “There’s not one magical thing. A lot of people do come to the mat for their physical practice and that’s great, they just want the physical thing for the New Year, but pretty soon you find the practice embodies much more than that.”

GOING FULL THROTTLE Ice-racing club holds its winter events on Georgetown Lake

The Our Gang 4 Wheelers uses a “heads-up” style of racing that can be traced back to about 1965 when “a group of guys” got together to try driving on a frozen pond above Central City. Photo by Jeffrey V. Smith

GEORGETOWN or more than 40 years, the members of the Our Gang 4 Wheelers—a self-described “little band of weirdoes”—have been holding races on ice, and having a ton of fun doing it. Except for its first three years, the club’s events have occurred on Georgetown Lake. Its members, many of whom have had relatives involved for decades, consist of volunteers who join to help put on the ice races, organize the events and attend meetings. Membership is not required to take part in events during their six weekend season. If you have a vehicle with 4WD or AWD and a valid driver’s license, just follow the rules, pay the $20 fee and it’s off to the races. Even better, spectators can show up any time to observe the action for free. Warm weather and a lack of solid ice has allowed for only seven out of 18 events in the past three years. Although the late December races were cancelled, at least 17-inches of ice was measured in early January, and it was determined the lake is ready for racing. Check out the races and special events this year beginning with a “Fun Day for Practice,” Jan. 11. A variety of races are scheduled for Jan. 12-13, Feb. 2-3, Feb. 9-10. Feb. 23-24 and March 1-3. Register online by Wednesday at midnight for the following weekend’s races. The Our Gang races have three divisions: competition, professional street and street. There are separate races for men and women. A wide range of cars, from normal all-wheel-drive street vehicles to extremely modified Jeeps with studs and “cheaters,” can participate. “On Sundays, we have the most popular class for beginners and that’s just regular street cars racing heads up with regular tires,” Our Gang President Lisa Bashline Lannerd explained. “From there, you can step up through the ranks. We have the Street Class—street cars with street tires—but then we have the Pro Street Class. It’s street cars, but they are starting to advance their competitiveness and buying special ice driving

tires or studded tires. Then, you can keep going all the way up to my class, which is purpose-built race cars with the tires and a lot of experience behind the wheel.” She says, to begin, if you have a street car with regular tires, all-wheel-drive, a driver’s license and pay the fee, you can participate. The energy is definitely different when your competing, according to Bashline. “Even in the bare rubber level, people think it’s going to be really slow and boring,” she said. “But, when you are in the car driving, you are very busy. I think the best way to experience it is to actually do it. This is local or grassroots racing to the core. You are not going to get rich doing it. We are all doing this for fun and most of us have been friends for decades. It’s all about the love of the sport and having a good time.” For those not into racing or driving on the ice at high speeds, it’s free to watch others do it, and it’s surprisingly entertaining. “We are just off the highway, and you can come see a really unique sport,” Lannerd said, “but, you also still get to be outside in Colorado in the winter time. It’s just something you can cross off your bucket list. You get to walk on a frozen lake and watch some crazy people racing cars.” There is also the competitive aspect. “I think that’s an exciting element for people to watch as well. It’s not just numbers on a board or anything like that. It has that drag racing or NASCAR feeling and has that ‘heads up’ competitiveness to it,” Lannerd explained. All races are in a head-to-head format which can be fun to watch. The studded and cheater tire classes are the fastest and, therefore, most popular races to watch. Races start at 9:30 a.m. with free parking in the lots next to the lake. Races progress from one class to another as they are completed; there are no set start times. View the planned order of classes for a particular day on the group’s website. Visit ourgangiceracing.com for more information and complete details for racers and spectators.
