YOU ATTENDED OUR FRIENDS’ 2015 LIGHT OF LITERACY CEREMONY, WHO IN YOUR LIFE HAS SERVED AS A LITERACY LUMINARY? For me it was my mother and grandfather. We didn’t have much but we were given magazines and old books. So from a very early age my mother would read to me, and write with me. This instilled in me a love for reading, a love for education and a love for doing well in school. I knew that education was the ticket to being a successful person. I also knew that when I brought home good grades that it made my mother and grandfather happy and I always wanted to see them happy. They were my luminaries because they always pushed me, had high expectations of me and always wanted me to do well. I owe who I am to them.

The library is truly invaluable to our students. I see it as the center hub in the community in terms of enhancing literacy and appreciation for reading and research. It helps to supplement what we are teaching in the classroom and reinforces a love for reading, speaking, thinking and creating. Many times students are given assignments that require them to go beyond the walls of the school into the public library to obtain additional information. The library staff is exceptional for providing the necessary guidance for our students. I must say that Wicomico Public Libraries is a strong partner with Wicomico Public Schools and we appreciate the special summer programs and activities that it provides throughout the school year. I’d like to say that the public library is the Taj Mahal in the community because it truly enhances and advances its citizenry to be literate.
